- 0:01Speaker 1: What it do? We're back again. The Grounded Show, episode 158. Sheesh.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hear me. We got a special guest, man. Grounded Show OG,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Quincy Jamal. Your boy. Your boy. What's going on, man?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Joe had some stuff he had to take care of today.
- 0:19Speaker 1: He couldn't pull up after I brought him mad beers
- 0:21Speaker 1: for cheers. You know what I mean? No, it's funny, man.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We were hanging out, watching football the other day, and...
- 0:29Speaker 1: We had like a few, basically all the homies from
- 0:32Speaker 1: the group chat, we all linked up. You know what
- 0:33Speaker 1: I mean? Yeah. And we were outside and my boy
- 0:37Speaker 1: Ronnie pulled up with the beers. We all grabbed a
- 0:40Speaker 1: beer and then we started to do a cheers, but
- 0:43Speaker 1: Joe didn't have a beer. So like for some reason
- 0:46Speaker 1: in my mind, since he didn't have a beer, you're
- 0:49Speaker 1: not part of the cheers. You know what I mean?
- 0:51Speaker 1: He had a tumbler. You know what I mean? It
- 0:53Speaker 1: was like, you know, you got to grab the Corona
- 0:55Speaker 1: for this. You know what I mean? Yeah. And it
- 0:57Speaker 1: just became like a funny little thing. And it was funny, man.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I wanted to have a little beers cheer today when
- 1:04Speaker 1: he pulled up, but we'll have to save it for
- 1:06Speaker 1: next time. Save it for another day. Facts, man. But yeah, man,
- 1:12Speaker 1: one of the things that we've been catching up on
- 1:15Speaker 1: the last couple of days, man, is the NBA season
- 1:18Speaker 1: kicked off. Last time me and Joe was on here
- 1:20Speaker 1: talking about preseason stuff. Now the season is here. A
- 1:24Speaker 1: few games already here, we've already gotten some looks at
- 1:28Speaker 1: the teams we've been thinking about as far as the Sixers,
- 1:33Speaker 1: how they're going to look with LeBron and Brown. The
- 1:36Speaker 1: new look Celtics, where are they going to be as
- 1:39Speaker 1: far as expectations are concerned? How good are they going
- 1:42Speaker 1: to be? There's just a lot of threads to pull
- 1:46Speaker 1: coming out of the first couple of games of the
- 1:49Speaker 1: NBA season, man.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Super excited to see the Timberwolves this year, bro. Well,
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Timberwolves. Me and AJ was talking about it before
- 1:57Speaker 1: you pulled up, bro. Them Timberwolves look nice, bro. They
- 2:00Speaker 1: look like that's going to be some exciting ball to watch. Yeah.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And one of the things that I've kind of peeped
- 2:07Speaker 1: about that team is they're coming together right time age-wise. Facts.
- 2:12Speaker 1: They got a good three-year window where these guys are
- 2:15Speaker 1: going to be entering slash in their prime in that window. Yep. And, man,
- 2:21Speaker 1: they look like they could be a dangerous team, for real, man.
- 2:24Speaker 1: At first, I was kind of like, I didn't like
- 2:26Speaker 1: that Nas Reid wasn't there no more.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Because I felt like he was a big piece. But
- 2:31Speaker 1: something that AJ was talking about earlier, too, is, like,
- 2:35Speaker 1: now you see Rudy Gobert is more involved. And he's
- 2:37Speaker 1: even kind of noticing, like, yo, you know, Melo's making
- 2:41Speaker 1: it easy for me to score. So he's going to, like,
- 2:43Speaker 1: once he has that mindset shift of, like, okay, maybe
- 2:47Speaker 1: I could be more like a 15 to 20 point
- 2:50Speaker 1: kind of guy, depending on what's going on, you know,
- 2:52Speaker 1: with these new opportunities he's getting. And, you know, McDaniels, like,
- 2:58Speaker 1: it's like, bro, they got a nice core that's really scary, bro.
- 3:02Speaker 2: I like the chemistry they're building off Rip. You know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: a lot of teams, like, not a lot of teams,
- 3:06Speaker 2: but some teams, they take some time to kind of
- 3:09Speaker 2: get there. And I feel like they're really showcasing their
- 3:11Speaker 2: chemistry off of Rip.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Yeah, they spoiled the Miami Heat coming out party. They
- 3:16Speaker 1: really spoiled that. Ant-Man, first player since Wilt to go
- 3:21Speaker 1: back-to-back 40-point opening night games. Wow. Only other player that's
- 3:26Speaker 1: done it is Wilt and Jordan. That's crazy. I didn't
- 3:28Speaker 1: know that. I didn't even know that was that. That's crazy.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And the only person to do it back-to-back seasons was Wilt,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and now Ant-Man. So, man, he's on a legendary pace, bro.
- 3:38Speaker 1: It's going to be interesting to see kind of where
- 3:40Speaker 1: his career shapes up with these accolades that he's been achieving.
- 3:44Speaker 1: For sure. Dog, everything that he's done has been like
- 3:48Speaker 1: Jordan territory. Yeah, yeah, nah, for sure. So it's like crazy.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Every stat that comes up, it's like we're talking about Jordan, bro.
- 3:55Speaker 1: When you're talking about the type of stuff that he's doing.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And I feel like LaMelo fits that Pippen role, you
- 4:01Speaker 2: know what I'm saying? As far as just having a solid.
- 4:03Speaker 2: I don't think he's had another guard that can kind
- 4:07Speaker 2: of like, move the ball the way he, you know
- 4:09Speaker 2: what I'm saying? To make it real, like, it's not
- 4:11Speaker 2: just focused on him. Yeah, somebody to open the game
- 4:13Speaker 2: for him. Open it up a little bit, exactly. So
- 4:16Speaker 2: it's exciting to see that develop, for sure. Get a
- 4:19Speaker 2: little close on it? My fault, I got comfortable in
- 4:21Speaker 2: all that, you know what I'm saying?
- 4:25Speaker 1: Nah. But, yeah, it's been a nice string of a
- 4:27Speaker 1: couple games. You know, it's funny, we was joking in
- 4:29Speaker 1: the group chat that Jason Tatum still ain't the leader
- 4:32Speaker 1: of the Celtics, bro. Man. George coming out, you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: being the man, it's like, Well, supposedly, Paul George is
- 4:39Speaker 1: washed if you listen to everybody. You know what I'm saying? Obviously,
- 4:42Speaker 1: it's one game. It's an overreaction. You know what I mean?
- 4:45Speaker 1: But it's just a funny detail. But it's just coming
- 4:48Speaker 1: off the trade. You know what I mean?
- 4:49Speaker 2: It's just kind of, it don't look too good off
- 4:52Speaker 2: of it.
- 4:53Speaker 1: No, facts. This is going to be a telling season
- 4:56Speaker 1: for him, bro. It's almost like, I don't know. I
- 5:00Speaker 1: don't know if it's like the Kobe comparisons that he
- 5:04Speaker 1: brought on. Yeah. I don't know if it's the way
- 5:07Speaker 1: the Celtics position him. He's the guy. I don't know
- 5:11Speaker 1: what it is, bro, because I honestly don't feel like
- 5:13Speaker 1: it's him. Well, yeah, some of it is him because
- 5:17Speaker 1: of the Kobe stuff, but he gets this pressure on him,
- 5:23Speaker 1: and you feel like he's not performing up to it, bro,
- 5:25Speaker 1: whenever those moments come. I don't know. I think.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It's kind of like we were just talking about Anthony
- 5:32Speaker 2: Edwards and not having that player. I feel like him
- 5:34Speaker 2: with Jalen Brown, he had that player.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 2: And I think, you know, not having that anymore is
- 5:39Speaker 2: going to open up and expose a little bit.
- 5:41Speaker 1: And it's like AJ was saying, maybe he's just a
- 5:43Speaker 1: great second star. You feel me? You know what I mean? Like,
- 5:46Speaker 1: he's just not that guy, but he's going to be
- 5:48Speaker 1: a great, like, number one second star type guy. You
- 5:52Speaker 1: know what I mean? Yeah. Maybe that's just what it is,
- 5:55Speaker 1: you know?
- 5:55Speaker 2: What about Damian Lillard making his way back to Portland
- 5:59Speaker 2: and balling out?
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and they looked good, man. Yeah. They looking, him
- 6:02Speaker 1: and Ja. I like that pairing just for their apprenticeship. Mm-hmm.
- 6:07Speaker 1: For the mentality shift. Yeah. Him going to Portland, you know, Oregon. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 1: With Dame. Gonna slow him down, yeah. With Dame, bro.
- 6:16Speaker 1: For sure. A dude that's very wise. Yeah. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: when you hear him talk and you see how he
- 6:20Speaker 1: kind of approaches the game and career and stuff like that. Mm-hmm.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It's going to be dope to see that shift from
- 6:28Speaker 1: John Moran. They were trying to push him as the
- 6:31Speaker 1: face of the league before Ant-Man basically said, nah, I'm
- 6:35Speaker 1: in that category. Facts. Nah, that's facts. It's definitely a
- 6:40Speaker 1: crazy thing to see, man. Hopefully we get to see
- 6:45Speaker 1: continued greatness from the legends that are still playing and
- 6:50Speaker 1: We'll see what happens, man. But this is like a
- 6:52Speaker 1: year that I legit feel like there's eight teams that
- 6:55Speaker 1: you can make a case. You really don't know where
- 6:57Speaker 1: this is going to go this year. It's exciting, man.
- 6:59Speaker 2: It's going to be an exciting season for sure.
- 7:03Speaker 1: No, facts. And we're making a hard pivot, but, man,
- 7:07Speaker 1: I was checking earlier, and today we recorded this. It's
- 7:10Speaker 1: October 22nd. Did you know that 14 years ago today
- 7:14Speaker 1: Kendrick dropped Good Kid, Mad City, and it's been on
- 7:16Speaker 1: the Billboard charts ever since it dropped till now? It's
- 7:19Speaker 1: still on them. Well deserved. Well deserved.
- 7:23Speaker 2: I think that album is definitely like one of, you know,
- 7:26Speaker 2: you go back a generation and you look at.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Nas, Nas' first album, you know what I mean?
- 7:31Speaker 2: That's like an album that that generation is always going
- 7:35Speaker 2: to cling to and I feel like Good Kid, Mad
- 7:37Speaker 2: City is one of those albums for our generation for sure.
- 7:43Speaker 1: The thing about Kendrick that always struck me from the
- 7:46Speaker 1: beginning was his ability to make some Thoughtful music, but
- 7:51Speaker 1: it's hard. Yeah. And it's good music. Like, that combination is, like,
- 7:58Speaker 1: so hard. Because, like, there's a lot of art. Like,
- 8:01Speaker 1: even great, great, great artists can't do that. You know
- 8:04Speaker 1: what I'm saying? So, the way he's able to, like, really, like,
- 8:06Speaker 1: gel everything. Yeah. And just make it, like, an undeniable
- 8:10Speaker 1: banger that also is super deep. Mm-hmm. That also he's
- 8:13Speaker 1: killing it lyrically. Like, it's like. Well, also it's digestible
- 8:17Speaker 1: for the masses. Exactly. Like, it's a hard. hard skill
- 8:21Speaker 1: for sure. And obviously he's not underrated in the sense
- 8:25Speaker 1: that we talking about an album that's been on the
- 8:27Speaker 1: charts for 14 years. You know what I mean? So
- 8:31Speaker 1: he's not underrated, but I think there was a little
- 8:35Speaker 1: time period where like people were really just kind of
- 8:38Speaker 1: rating him based off of like Drake and that whole thing.
- 8:42Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I agree, 100%. He was
- 8:45Speaker 1: big before that, same way Drake was big before that.
- 8:47Speaker 1: They're both big after Drake. So it's like, at the
- 8:51Speaker 1: end of the day, the one thing that gets overlooked
- 8:56Speaker 1: is the catalog. Rob Markman, Yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 2: But I think it's the recency bias, right? Somebody like Kendrick,
- 9:04Speaker 2: you can even put Cole in that conversation too. They
- 9:07Speaker 2: take the time to experience life to put their music out.
- 9:10Speaker 2: And Drake was just constantly putting out music. So it's
- 9:13Speaker 2: easy if you're having that conversation with somebody that's just
- 9:16Speaker 2: going off of what's recent.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Yeah. That Drake was always going to lead that conversation.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Or people that are just looking at one metric. You
- 9:23Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? When they're looking at just commercial success,
- 9:28Speaker 1: it goes back to the age-old thing in hip-hop of
- 9:33Speaker 1: Nas versus Jay-Z, where people would always just try to
- 9:36Speaker 1: use the angle that Jay-Z had a lot of money
- 9:39Speaker 1: and he was married to Beyonce. And it's like, bro,
- 9:41Speaker 1: that has nothing to do with anything that anybody's talking about.
- 9:44Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Right, right. This is not
- 9:46Speaker 1: a conversation about whose life is more successful. We're just
- 9:50Speaker 1: talking about music. Yeah, exactly. So it's just funny, man,
- 9:54Speaker 1: how it gets like that. You know what I mean?
- 9:57Speaker 2: Like you said, it's just different levels to the conversation, though.
- 10:00Speaker 2: And that's why that album is so dope, because it
- 10:03Speaker 2: definitely showcases that him as an artist, he can do
- 10:07Speaker 2: everything as far as, like you said, make the music dope,
- 10:10Speaker 2: make it thoughtful. I think they did college studies on Damn,
- 10:15Speaker 2: if I remember correctly.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. You know what I mean? It's like.
- 10:18Speaker 2: So for it to still be that thought provoking, but
- 10:20Speaker 2: also commercial enough that the masses genuinely say, this is
- 10:24Speaker 2: a good album.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Rob Markman, Yeah. That's something admirable as far as being
- 10:30Speaker 1: an artist seeing people do stuff like that and you
- 10:32Speaker 1: just hope to put together something with that same kind
- 10:36Speaker 1: of attentiveness and feel and crafting it that way. Because
- 10:41Speaker 1: making music is one thing, but really putting together a
- 10:44Speaker 1: project that's executed Like in the vision with the story,
- 10:50Speaker 1: like start to finish and really like a tight thing.
- 10:54Speaker 1: It's hard, bro. Definitely. Super, super hard. So you always
- 10:58Speaker 1: respect when people are able to put together things like that.
- 11:00Speaker 1: You know what I mean? Hell yeah. Hell yeah. Kind
- 11:05Speaker 1: of going off of like respecting people, putting stuff together, man.
- 11:08Speaker 1: It was confirmed. It was a rumor for a little bit,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but it was confirmed that Drewski is going to be
- 11:12Speaker 1: hosting SNL. I believe it's November 7th. Yeah. And it's crazy, man,
- 11:17Speaker 1: just seeing him come up as a social media comedian
- 11:22Speaker 1: slash skit kind of guy. You can see where that's
- 11:25Speaker 1: kind of taken him with the streaming and mainstream stuff.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And then him being the first guy like that to
- 11:31Speaker 1: host SNL. And just the thought of, man, how's he
- 11:36Speaker 1: going to be live like that? I mean, when he
- 11:39Speaker 1: hosted the BET Awards, dog, he was pretty good. No,
- 11:42Speaker 1: not facts. It's true. He's hosted other stuff where he's hosting.
- 11:46Speaker 1: But SNL is like, you're hosting and you're doing skits,
- 11:49Speaker 1: like live skits. That's facts. He's great at the skits,
- 11:53Speaker 1: but live skits is a different thing. That's a different bag.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And you're making jokes for a way different audience than
- 12:00Speaker 1: usually who he's really tapping in with his stuff. Yeah,
- 12:03Speaker 1: that's facts. You know what I'm saying? That's facts.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I will say, it's dope to see, and it kind
- 12:08Speaker 2: of ties into what we said about the album, the
- 12:11Speaker 2: Good Kid, Mad City album. It's dope to see him
- 12:13Speaker 2: as a, like you said, social media presence that's built
- 12:16Speaker 2: his way up through social media and is able to
- 12:20Speaker 2: have all of these kind of opportunities.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 12:23Speaker 2: Somebody is giving the check to say, we want that guy.
- 12:27Speaker 2: And so he's bringing something to the table that's like
- 12:30Speaker 2: the package, you know?
- 12:31Speaker 1: It's the, when you got the people, bro, like they
- 12:34Speaker 1: can't deny you. You know what I mean? We were,
- 12:36Speaker 1: I don't remember. Yeah, it was with you that I
- 12:39Speaker 1: was talking about it. And obviously, yo. AJ knows a
- 12:42Speaker 1: lot about this. He's a way better skater than me,
- 12:44Speaker 1: but like, it's like skateboarding, bro. Like if you, if,
- 12:47Speaker 1: if you could do the stuff that's, you, nobody can
- 12:51Speaker 1: say like, it's like do it or you can't do it. Right.
- 12:53Speaker 1: I mean, if you can do the moves, nobody could
- 12:56Speaker 1: take it away from you and nobody could fake it
- 12:58Speaker 1: because it's like doing it is extremely hard no matter what.
- 13:01Speaker 1: And if you can do them at the highest ability,
- 13:05Speaker 1: that's it. You know? And that's like kind of with Drewski,
- 13:07Speaker 1: like you can say whatever you want, but people are
- 13:10Speaker 1: tapping in. Yup. People are generally loving the comedy that
- 13:15Speaker 1: he's bringing.
- 13:16Speaker 2: He got people in a chokehold. He dropped something and
- 13:18Speaker 2: 30 seconds later, bruh, everybody knows.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Facts. Clipping it. Everybody knows. Making memes out of it.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:25Speaker 1: They're taking little pieces and dissecting them. You know what
- 13:27Speaker 1: I mean? Like little five second clips. Oh, this is
- 13:29Speaker 1: the inspiration of this. Oh, he copied this person. People
- 13:33Speaker 1: making statements and stuff like. He'll drop a skit and
- 13:35Speaker 1: have people drop his statements after, bro. Nah, facts. Facts. Like,
- 13:38Speaker 1: that's how you know you going crazy, bro.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And it's crazy because there's a lot of people doing
- 13:45Speaker 2: what he's doing on social media, but it's just nobody's
- 13:49Speaker 2: doing it to that level.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Like, he's literally making.
- 13:53Speaker 2: his own lane of like social media content and comedy.
- 13:57Speaker 1: And he's doing like movie level productions for like a
- 14:00Speaker 1: minute and 30 clips that he's going to put out. Like,
- 14:02Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? It's crazy. He's going to
- 14:04Speaker 1: put out a couple of clips that's going to be
- 14:06Speaker 1: like a minute long and he's spending insane. I think
- 14:09Speaker 1: they were saying like some of the recent ones have
- 14:11Speaker 1: been like more than 100 G's to produce. You know
- 14:14Speaker 1: what I mean? And it's like, bro, like when you're
- 14:17Speaker 1: putting that kind of like money and like, and that's
- 14:21Speaker 1: the thing, like, about like being online, bro, is like,
- 14:25Speaker 1: there's so many things coming at you. And then it's
- 14:29Speaker 1: the funny thing too. Like sometimes people get tired of
- 14:31Speaker 1: stuff like that and they want to go, they want
- 14:33Speaker 1: to see the low quality stuff. Yeah. They want to
- 14:36Speaker 1: see somebody on some like regular stuff, you know, just
- 14:39Speaker 1: cracking jokes in their living room or something like, it's
- 14:41Speaker 1: just funny how like ebbs and flows, you know what
- 14:43Speaker 1: I mean? Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 2: I think, like you said, man, it's kind of a
- 14:47Speaker 2: lane for everything, but those minute and a half clips, man,
- 14:50Speaker 2: it's like, that's, That's where the attention is.
- 14:53Speaker 1: At right now.
- 14:54Speaker 2: It's like, you're going to get more right now off
- 14:56Speaker 2: of a minute and a half clips. And that's why
- 14:58Speaker 2: even for us as artists, bro, we used to do
- 15:01Speaker 2: full music videos and we realized the return on investment
- 15:04Speaker 2: on that.
- 15:04Speaker 1: It's like the clips are way better to return. It's
- 15:08Speaker 1: even funny how videographers will tell you that. From the jump.
- 15:12Speaker 1: They won't even try to finesse you for a music video.
- 15:15Speaker 1: They'll just be like, yo. Honestly, like, let's just do X, Y,
- 15:18Speaker 1: and Z. And the artists be like, nah, man, I'm trying.
- 15:22Speaker 1: And they do all this stuff and then they drop
- 15:24Speaker 1: it and it's like, it's just a video. Like, you know, like,
- 15:30Speaker 1: they got a million dollar budget and you're trying to
- 15:33Speaker 1: emulate that video with a thousand dollars. It's not going
- 15:37Speaker 1: to happen. You either got to come with a different
- 15:39Speaker 1: angle or just keep it simple because you're not going
- 15:43Speaker 1: to rent a base level BMW and be in the
- 15:49Speaker 1: video looking like Jay-Z. You know what I'm saying? Facts.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Those things don't go together, bro. Facts. But yeah, man,
- 15:56Speaker 1: I'm definitely going to check out that Drew skits and
- 16:00Speaker 1: stuff that drop after he hosts SNL, man. It's going
- 16:03Speaker 1: to be interesting to see how that kind of goes down. Yeah.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But yeah, man. Also, man, I can't wait for you
- 16:13Speaker 1: to see that Street Fighter movie, bro. I seen it.
- 16:16Speaker 1: When it dropped with my brother, shout out to my brother, man.
- 16:19Speaker 1: He had me pull up to a... He got me
- 16:22Speaker 1: into this community event they had in Winter Park. Some
- 16:25Speaker 1: people from the gaming community put together a screening of
- 16:31Speaker 1: Street Fighter, and they had a couple of the local
- 16:33Speaker 1: guys that play in the tournaments and stuff like that there.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Some of the guys that put together the tournaments for Evo,
- 16:39Speaker 1: I believe, and for Street Fighter. And man, I'm not
- 16:44Speaker 1: going to say... really anything about the movie, because I
- 16:46Speaker 1: don't want to ruin it, and you haven't, I don't know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: you haven't seen it yet, we give it a couple
- 16:49Speaker 1: weeks to really, like, talk about it, you know, but man,
- 16:53Speaker 1: I can't wait for you to see it, because, like, one,
- 16:55Speaker 1: Street Fighter, bro, first thing you got to do is
- 16:58Speaker 1: strip away, like, this is not about to be no
- 17:00Speaker 1: Christopher Nolan film, you know what I'm saying, like, we're
- 17:04Speaker 1: not about to get Steven Spielberg, like, this is, this
- 17:08Speaker 1: is not meant to be that, like, you got to,
- 17:10Speaker 1: you got to turn off a little bit of, like,
- 17:12Speaker 1: your comments, not common sense, but, like, This is like
- 17:16Speaker 1: an over-the-top video game movie. It's different than superhero stuff. Like,
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's a different tone. You know what I mean? So
- 17:24Speaker 1: as long as you can get past that, it's a
- 17:26Speaker 1: great movie, bro. Yeah. You can't be watching it trying
- 17:28Speaker 1: to reason everything. Exactly. You can't be watching it thinking,
- 17:30Speaker 1: like I was saying, like, you can't be watching it
- 17:33Speaker 1: thinking Martin Scorsese wrote this. You know what I mean? Like,
- 17:37Speaker 1: this is meant to be what it is and it's
- 17:38Speaker 1: great for what it is. You know, them staying in
- 17:41Speaker 1: that lane. And the way the movie went and the way, like,
- 17:45Speaker 1: They tease certain things and possibly another one coming out,
- 17:48Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Especially after they had a
- 17:49Speaker 1: great opening weekend. I know it made more than $ 50
- 17:52Speaker 1: million in the first weekend, which was a great sign.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Hopefully we get that second one. But the thing I
- 18:00Speaker 1: found dope was they got that Tupac song in the trailer.
- 18:04Speaker 1: They use it a lot for the advertisements. Still ambitious
- 18:08Speaker 1: as a writer, but instead of saying ambitious as a writer, no,
- 18:11Speaker 1: he says, instead of I won't deny it, I'm a
- 18:13Speaker 1: straight writer. He says, I won't deny it, I'm a
- 18:16Speaker 1: street fighter. And he has like a street fighter kind
- 18:19Speaker 1: of version of that song. And I thought it was A.I.
- 18:23Speaker 1: at first. You know what I mean? I just assumed,
- 18:25Speaker 1: you know, the day we living in. A.I. had his voice,
- 18:28Speaker 1: made it say street fighter. Well, no, he actually recorded
- 18:31Speaker 1: that in like 94 or something for the original Street
- 18:35Speaker 1: Fighter movie. Like they were going to do some kind
- 18:36Speaker 1: of like collaboration. And they eventually didn't end up doing
- 18:40Speaker 1: nothing with it and he passed away. But the state
- 18:43Speaker 1: still had, you know, the recordings and everything. And somebody
- 18:46Speaker 1: remembered that was part of it. Like, hey, they did this.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Let's see if they still got it. And they worked
- 18:52Speaker 1: out a deal to use it in the movie. That's fire.
- 18:55Speaker 1: And it was dope, man. Yeah. They used that and
- 18:58Speaker 1: they used some 50 Cent music in the movie, obviously,
- 19:01Speaker 1: because he's in the film. It was dope, man. It
- 19:04Speaker 1: was really dope. It was very enjoyable. They did a
- 19:08Speaker 1: thing where they really put a lot of Easter eggs
- 19:13Speaker 1: for the fighting game community. Nice. And even had some
- 19:16Speaker 1: of the champions from Evo and different tournaments come. like
- 19:21Speaker 1: the well-known people that be in these tournaments, they made
- 19:24Speaker 1: cameos in the movie. Oh, that's fire. You know what
- 19:26Speaker 1: I'm saying? Yeah, that's fire. So they really like catered
- 19:29Speaker 1: to that community. Yeah, that's fire. And I feel like
- 19:32Speaker 1: that's partly why the movie was so successful because like
- 19:35Speaker 1: they made it for who they should have made it for.
- 19:37Speaker 1: You know, I feel like a lot of times they
- 19:38Speaker 1: make these movies and try to adapt them in a
- 19:40Speaker 1: way where like they think it's going to be more palatable.
- 19:42Speaker 1: But it's like, bro, somebody that doesn't know about Street
- 19:46Speaker 1: fighters not going to care about the street what you're
- 19:48Speaker 1: trying to do yeah like they're not going to just
- 19:51Speaker 1: seek out this thing you know like i just feel
- 19:55Speaker 1: like you're not going to get as many casuals as
- 19:56Speaker 1: you think yeah cater to the people that like it
- 19:59Speaker 1: and then that will grow it more than anything you
- 20:02Speaker 1: know what i mean yeah yeah so it was nice
- 20:04Speaker 1: man it was uh A dope movie, man. When you
- 20:07Speaker 1: watch it, I can't wait to talk about some of
- 20:10Speaker 1: the little details from it because it was super dope, man. Yeah,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I'm seeing it as soon as I get home, man.
- 20:14Speaker 1: I already told you. Yeah, facts. But yeah, man, pretty soon,
- 20:18Speaker 1: speaking of video games, that new Call of Duty is
- 20:20Speaker 1: about to drop, Modern Warfare 4, I believe. Need that.
- 20:23Speaker 1: And then the GTA 6, bro. Need that too. Bro.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm hyped, bro. I took off a couple days
- 20:30Speaker 2: for GTA 6, dog. I wasn't playing around. I need
- 20:33Speaker 2: to lock in, bro.
- 20:35Speaker 1: You got missions to complete, bro. What? Oh, my God.
- 20:38Speaker 1: I'm not going to lie, man. You know, I've never
- 20:41Speaker 1: been a big fan of GTA, but Ian at the
- 20:46Speaker 1: studio played, like, the Netflix video during the session, and
- 20:49Speaker 1: I was watching it, and it's like, The story mode
- 20:53Speaker 1: and the gameplay look super dope. My thing is, bro,
- 20:55Speaker 1: if there's too many side missions and stuff, I can't
- 20:59Speaker 1: do it, bro. I like a game that tells you
- 21:03Speaker 1: the main path very clearly. And it's like, you could
- 21:06Speaker 1: just do this. If you're one of those that want
- 21:09Speaker 1: to be immersed in this, you can do all this
- 21:10Speaker 1: other stuff. But if you just give me a nice
- 21:13Speaker 1: direct path, one storyline, I'm cool with that. You know
- 21:17Speaker 1: what I mean?
- 21:18Speaker 2: I will say, that's why I personally enjoyed Wolverine. a
- 21:22Speaker 2: lot more than like Spider-Man because like- Rob Markman, Jr.
- 21:25Speaker 1: It was less open world. It was more like a mission.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Rob Markman, Jr.: It was just like, get me straight
- 21:27Speaker 1: to the fighting, dog. You know what I mean? So
- 21:30Speaker 1: it was more enjoyable for me.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Playing like Spider-Man, it's like you can do like side
- 21:35Speaker 2: missions and that's going to be cool too, but it's
- 21:37Speaker 2: like nah, bro.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Get me to the slashing and I just want to
- 21:40Speaker 1: be fighting. Rob Markman, Jr.: Same, bro. That's one of
- 21:42Speaker 1: the things that I think like, for example, like Assassin's Creed,
- 21:46Speaker 1: it eventually just got real boring for me because like, bro,
- 21:50Speaker 1: you have to go to like Three times, you got
- 21:53Speaker 1: to get on a horse to get on a buggy
- 21:56Speaker 1: to go like three times over to talk to this
- 21:58Speaker 1: one dude. And then when you pull up and talk
- 22:01Speaker 1: to a buddy, he's like, yeah, I left my feathers
- 22:03Speaker 1: where you just came from. And then you got to
- 22:06Speaker 1: go back the other way to get the feathers to
- 22:09Speaker 1: then go back to another dude that's on the other
- 22:11Speaker 1: side of town, but the opposite way. And it's like, bro,
- 22:14Speaker 1: I'm not trying to do Uber. I'm trying to play
- 22:17Speaker 1: a video game, bro. Like, what is this? No, that's bad.
- 22:20Speaker 1: It's so annoying. I'm not going to lie. I've never
- 22:22Speaker 1: been big on Assassin's Creed for that reason. Yeah. In
- 22:25Speaker 1: the beginning, I feel like the first one or two
- 22:27Speaker 1: of them, super dope because it was, you know. You
- 22:30Speaker 1: were doing missions. They weren't, you know, they didn't have
- 22:33Speaker 1: you doing these treks, bro. The super long treks, bro,
- 22:37Speaker 1: I can't do it, dog. Yeah, nah. I am not
- 22:39Speaker 1: trying to do that, bro.
- 22:40Speaker 2: And then it's always, like, anticlimactic. Like, you finally get
- 22:43Speaker 2: to the point where you thought it was going to
- 22:44Speaker 2: be dope, and it's just.
- 22:45Speaker 1: Like, all right, what's next? It's just like, exactly. Yeah,
- 22:49Speaker 1: it's like, all right. You're just on to the next thing.
- 22:50Speaker 1: On to the next. That's four times over, bro. Facts.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I just be tight, dog. Yeah, no, that's facts. I'm
- 22:56Speaker 1: not going to turn on it. Like, that's why, like,
- 22:58Speaker 1: to me, it's funny, like, It's funny to me that
- 23:01Speaker 1: people play games that, like, it's just normal stuff, like
- 23:03Speaker 1: role-playing games and stuff like that. Because, like, bro, I'm
- 23:05Speaker 1: not about to just go through my normal life to
- 23:08Speaker 1: then play a normal life as a video game character after, bro. Duh.
- 23:12Speaker 1: There's no way, bro. You know what? I ain't going
- 23:15Speaker 1: to lie.
- 23:16Speaker 2: No shade to anybody that be playing this game. But, dog,
- 23:18Speaker 2: the lawn simulator, I could never, bro.
- 23:20Speaker 1: What is that? I could never, dog. What is that?
- 23:23Speaker 2: People be playing games of them, like, cutting their lawns, bro.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh. I don't want to cut my real lawn.
- 23:29Speaker 1: That's insane, bro.
- 23:30Speaker 2: The lawn simulator.
- 23:32Speaker 1: The lawn simulator, dog.
- 23:34Speaker 2: I've seen that one. I was like, nah, bro. There's
- 23:36Speaker 2: no way. And it's actually a pretty big game, dog.
- 23:40Speaker 1: That's funny. People play that shit. I remember when my
- 23:42Speaker 1: daughter was real little, she was playing Roblox and I
- 23:45Speaker 1: was seeing what she was doing. And she was working
- 23:47Speaker 1: at a pizza place and she would grab the pizzas,
- 23:51Speaker 1: put them on the back of her bike, ride her
- 23:53Speaker 1: bike to the house, drop the pizza off, get the money,
- 23:56Speaker 1: go back to the restaurant. I'm like, And she's like,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I'm making money so that I can add this to
- 24:02Speaker 1: my house. And I'm like, all right. I mean, if
- 24:05Speaker 1: it makes you happy, I guess I enjoy it. But,
- 24:10Speaker 1: you know, you can keep that. Oh, my God, bro.
- 24:14Speaker 1: She's been clocking in since she was 10. Dead ass, bro.
- 24:17Speaker 1: It was so funny, man. Like I said, bro, I
- 24:21Speaker 1: came with those. Yeah, no. I draw the limit as
- 24:25Speaker 1: like I can watch some people stream. Yeah. You know
- 24:28Speaker 1: what I mean? If it's exciting gameplay, I can watch
- 24:30Speaker 1: some streaming. But like, that's like if I'm, you know,
- 24:34Speaker 1: just as while I'm doing something else, I can have
- 24:35Speaker 1: it on in the background. But man, like this role
- 24:40Speaker 1: playing type stuff, bro. Nah, I'm good on that. Yeah.
- 24:44Speaker 1: I am good on that. But yeah, man, as we
- 24:47Speaker 1: kind of wrap up, I know you've been working on
- 24:50Speaker 1: a project, man. Yeah. I know at least some people
- 24:53Speaker 1: that's tapping into this podcast already know that you've been
- 24:56Speaker 1: putting out some songs and been seeing, you know, you've
- 24:59Speaker 1: been in the studio working and stuff. How's it been, man?
- 25:03Speaker 1: Working at Polymath with Mari. Yeah. Shout out to Mari
- 25:07Speaker 1: and Polymath. Yeah. Facts. How's the journey on this project been?
- 25:11Speaker 1: It's been great, man.
- 25:12Speaker 2: I've been, it's crazy because like, you know, the inspiration
- 25:16Speaker 2: for this project came out of like a, super kind
- 25:19Speaker 2: of traumatic situation. Like, you know what I mean?
- 25:21Speaker 1: I pretty much almost lost my house, you know, and
- 25:23Speaker 1: thankfully was able to navigate that.
- 25:25Speaker 2: But then going through that was just like a crazy
- 25:27Speaker 2: time for me where like, I kind of just started,
- 25:30Speaker 2: you know, resorting to the music to kind of just write,
- 25:32Speaker 2: you know? And so like this project came together pretty organically,
- 25:36Speaker 2: pretty quickly. And just, um, like I said before, shout
- 25:39Speaker 2: out to Mari and shout out to you for connecting
- 25:41Speaker 2: me with Mari.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Oh yeah. You know, that was actually, um, I actually, uh,
- 25:46Speaker 1: Shout out to Ian, bro, because he was kind of like,
- 25:49Speaker 1: I'm sure they wouldn't mind me saying this, but when
- 25:52Speaker 1: she was first going to come around, he's like, yo,
- 25:54Speaker 1: if you don't mind, come do a session with somebody
- 25:56Speaker 1: that we're possibly going to hire for the studio. So
- 25:59Speaker 1: I went. We did the session. Good vibes. Everything was cool.
- 26:05Speaker 1: Everybody liked her right away. As soon as I had
- 26:09Speaker 1: the session with her, you were starting to get back
- 26:14Speaker 1: into the music scene and you didn't really have a
- 26:16Speaker 1: place that you were recording at. So I was like, man,
- 26:19Speaker 1: talk to Mari, bro. And it was just dope seeing
- 26:23Speaker 1: that kind of come together. And shout out to her too, man,
- 26:26Speaker 1: because she's really been holding it down there. You know
- 26:28Speaker 1: what I'm saying? I feel like she just hit the
- 26:31Speaker 1: ground running. For sure. It's pretty dope to see. It's
- 26:36Speaker 1: like I told, I think me and Ian talked about
- 26:38Speaker 1: it a little bit, but I know how hard it
- 26:40Speaker 1: is to find good people. So it's like that detail
- 26:44Speaker 1: to be able to, you know, Find somebody that's hungry
- 26:47Speaker 1: that you can trust, that's responsible, that cares about what
- 26:49Speaker 1: they're doing, bro. It sounds like something that should be
- 26:53Speaker 1: easy to find, but it's hard.
- 26:54Speaker 2: No, that's facts.
- 26:55Speaker 1: It's hard to find. That's big facts.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And she's hungry, too, man. It's always dope to see
- 27:01Speaker 2: that hunger still.
- 27:02Speaker 1: And working with people like that brings out bettering you, too. Exactly.
- 27:05Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Because they're not just pressing record.
- 27:08Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Facts. They're actually like... Invested. Exactly.
- 27:12Speaker 1: They eat.
- 27:13Speaker 2: Whether your music is their favorite music or not, they
- 27:16Speaker 2: want to make the best possible product with you, and
- 27:20Speaker 2: that speaks volumes. It's been a great process, man. It's
- 27:24Speaker 2: been a great process. We're pretty much wrapping it up.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I just dropped my first single, Patterns, and that's doing
- 27:29Speaker 2: pretty well as far as the conversion and the stats
- 27:32Speaker 2: and the ads and everything, how everything's looking.
- 27:35Speaker 1: It's exciting, man. Exciting times.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I'm super excited to be back on the music tip.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Kind of like we were talking about earlier, I'm one
- 27:42Speaker 2: of those artists that I got to go through life
- 27:45Speaker 2: to kind of get that spark back.
- 27:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Shout out to Chris, too, man. AJ hooked me
- 27:51Speaker 1: up with him. Mercedes, right, AJ? Shout out to Chris Mercedes, man.
- 27:55Speaker 1: He pulled up to Polymath the other day for a session,
- 27:59Speaker 1: and I was talking to AJ. We talked a little
- 28:01Speaker 1: bit about it after, and then I talked about it with...
- 28:04Speaker 1: with my daughter and my wife, matter of fact, we talked,
- 28:07Speaker 1: me and you talked about it a little bit, but like,
- 28:09Speaker 1: I was just like, man, like I've been running around
- 28:11Speaker 1: so much with, with the family stuff that I haven't
- 28:13Speaker 1: been like on my game as far as like in
- 28:16Speaker 1: the studio working and stuff like that. So I've been like,
- 28:19Speaker 1: you've been like heavy and I've been light, you know
- 28:22Speaker 1: what I'm saying? So it's like, I'm like getting my
- 28:26Speaker 1: feedback in it where it's like, I need to get
- 28:27Speaker 1: back in shape. You know what I'm saying? Cause it's like,
- 28:29Speaker 1: I've talked about on the pod before, like you're building up,
- 28:34Speaker 1: all the muscles and everything. And it's just like, the
- 28:37Speaker 1: only way you're going to get better at anything is,
- 28:39Speaker 1: is with repetition. You know what I'm saying? And even
- 28:42Speaker 1: like my daughter's like, she's doing a whole bunch of
- 28:44Speaker 1: shows like theater stuff and singing stuff. And like, she's
- 28:47Speaker 1: just in such shape that like, she's able to go
- 28:51Speaker 1: to this audition and, and you know, all she gotta
- 28:55Speaker 1: do is learn the song. You know what I'm saying?
- 28:56Speaker 1: She don't gotta like get herself ready or whatever. She's ready.
- 29:00Speaker 1: She just need to learn the song and that's it.
- 29:02Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? And, That's why she's been
- 29:05Speaker 1: getting so many roles and stuff and being a part
- 29:08Speaker 1: of so many cool things because they can count on her.
- 29:11Speaker 1: She's going to be ready. You know what I'm saying?
- 29:14Speaker 1: And it's like with a lot of artists too, like,
- 29:17Speaker 1: you know, after COVID, you kind of fall off from
- 29:19Speaker 1: like being sharp for the performing. You're not seeking out
- 29:22Speaker 1: so much stuff because it's like kind of getting back
- 29:24Speaker 1: into the scene. It's like a different landscape. Things are changing.
- 29:28Speaker 1: But that's even why, like I was talking with AJ,
- 29:30Speaker 1: like we've been, focusing on doing our own thing. You
- 29:33Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? Because it's like, you don't want
- 29:35Speaker 1: to be at the mercy of somebody when it's time
- 29:37Speaker 1: for you to apply your craft or whatever. So if
- 29:40Speaker 1: you're able to do your own thing, I always like,
- 29:43Speaker 1: for me, I always like doing my own thing before anything.
- 29:47Speaker 1: You know what I mean? I don't mind collaborating or
- 29:53Speaker 1: not even collaborating, but doing something under somebody or for
- 29:56Speaker 1: someone when it makes sense. But it's just the same
- 29:58Speaker 1: idea of it's hard to find good people. It's hard
- 30:01Speaker 1: to find good people to work with as well. It's
- 30:04Speaker 1: hard to find good people to work for you and
- 30:06Speaker 1: to work with. So navigating that, bro, is such a
- 30:14Speaker 1: fine operation. You know what I'm saying? But it's just
- 30:19Speaker 1: like anything. You're going to have to keep attacking it
- 30:22Speaker 1: to make it work. You know what I'm saying? 100%. So, yeah, man,
- 30:25Speaker 1: I'm excited. Obviously, I've heard a lot of this stuff already,
- 30:28Speaker 1: but I'm excited to hear how everybody kind of receives
- 30:31Speaker 1: the joints that you start dropping and seeing how you
- 30:33Speaker 1: start rolling out the new stuff. I was talking to
- 30:36Speaker 1: AJ a few days ago about some ideas I have
- 30:39Speaker 1: for this project I'm putting together. So I'm excited to
- 30:42Speaker 1: kind of get rolling, too. And we got a couple
- 30:43Speaker 1: of joints together that's going to be dropping soon, too.
- 30:45Speaker 1: We do. I'm excited about those for sure, man. Yeah, man.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I already got the cover. I got to send it
- 30:50Speaker 1: to you for one of them, for the silhouette joint.
- 30:54Speaker 1: I'm probably going to upload that for November or something
- 30:57Speaker 1: so we can get it for the cozy weather. Yes, sir. Nah,
- 31:03Speaker 1: that's dope. But yeah, man, I appreciate you pulling up.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Y'all want to follow the boy. I am Quincy Jamal
