Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after Party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:44Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:48Speaker 1: we're discussing what the worst people in the world listen to,
- 0:51Speaker 1: from serial killers to war criminals to Jeffrey Epstein and
- 0:55Speaker 1: all the way back again. And somehow this is all
- 0:58Speaker 1: the subject of this week's episode, Towns van Zant's Fault.
- 1:01Speaker 1: We're previewing next week's episode on The Pretender's Chrissy Hin. Plus,
- 1:05Speaker 1: we get into your emails, comments, dms, and as always,
- 1:09Speaker 1: a whole lot of Rosie. This is the podcast for
- 1:12Speaker 1: the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers who know
- 1:14Speaker 1: that the best history is the history that gets buried.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Disgraceland is where I tell the stories they didn't want told,
- 1:20Speaker 1: the kind you'll end up telling someone else. All Right,
- 1:22Speaker 1: disc goes, Let's get into it. Towns van Zant is
- 1:37Speaker 1: the subject of this week's Disgraceland full episode, and we
- 1:44Speaker 1: just released that episode right before the bonus here, And
- 1:47Speaker 1: as you'll hear, one of the most interesting aspects of
- 1:51Speaker 1: Towns van Zant's life and career, it's the fact that
- 1:55Speaker 1: he modeled his life and career after Hank Willialliams. And
- 2:00Speaker 1: there are all these eerie coincidences, including the day that
- 2:05Speaker 1: he died and how he died, So that could be
- 2:09Speaker 1: thinking about eerie coincidences between musicians throughout music history, and
- 2:13Speaker 1: there are some pretty good ones. John Lennon and dine
- 2:16Speaker 1: Bag Daryll from Pantera were both shot and killed by
- 2:19Speaker 1: deranged fans on the same day. Years apart, of course,
- 2:23Speaker 1: Kurt Cobain and Alison chains Is Lane Staley both died
- 2:26Speaker 1: on the same day as well. Also years apart, Lincoln
- 2:29Speaker 1: Park had a drummer named Kennedy the Dead Kennedy's had
- 2:32Speaker 1: a drummer named Lincoln. Ryan Adams and Brian Adams share
- 2:35Speaker 1: the same birthdays. That sort of stuff, and also a
- 2:38Speaker 1: ton more about nine to eleven than I'm going to
- 2:40Speaker 1: say for another time. But anyways, this thinking led me
- 2:44Speaker 1: into a different, to me more interesting research wormhole, and
- 2:50Speaker 1: that's into the subject of the music that certain serial
- 2:53Speaker 1: killers were fans of, and in some cases the music
- 2:58Speaker 1: that they listened to while they were doing the nasty
- 3:02Speaker 1: shit that they were up to. Now Ozzy Osbourne RIP
- 3:07Speaker 1: Ozzy recently passed away. Ozzie was a Christian. Ozzie was
- 3:11Speaker 1: an overall good guy, I believe, so he would hate
- 3:15Speaker 1: this factoid that I'm going to lay on you, but
- 3:17Speaker 1: I'm gonna mention it anyway. Jeffrey Dahmer loved Black Sabbath.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Apparently he would listen to Sabbath while dismembering bodies. Songs
- 3:29Speaker 1: iron Man and Paranoid were two of his favorites, which
- 3:33Speaker 1: means the Milwaukee Cannibal had pretty basic taste when it
- 3:37Speaker 1: comes to Black Sabbath. It's a matter Jeffrey, you never
- 3:40Speaker 1: heard yourself from Junior's eyes. Check that out, all right. Anyways,
- 3:44Speaker 1: Beyond Jeffrey Dahmer, I didn't know that about Jeffrey Dahmer
- 3:48Speaker 1: until this morning, but we all know about the Knight
- 3:50Speaker 1: stalker Richard Ramirez's obsession with acdcne about Charles Manson's supposed
- 3:54Speaker 1: obsession with the Beatles. What I didn't know about was
- 3:57Speaker 1: Aileen Wrenos's love for ten thousand Maniacs in the song Carnival,
- 4:02Speaker 1: which she apparently requested to be played at her wake. This,
- 4:06Speaker 1: for whatever reason, is beyond creepy to me. I think
- 4:10Speaker 1: I know the reason because it's it's counterpoint. I never
- 4:12Speaker 1: thought of this before, But I guess what I'm saying
- 4:14Speaker 1: is that if you told me the Natalie Merchant had
- 4:15Speaker 1: some deep, dark secrets, I guess I wouldn't be surprised. Now,
- 4:19Speaker 1: we're all big New York City nineteen seventy seven scholars
- 4:22Speaker 1: here in Disgrace Saints. So if you're like me, then
- 4:25Speaker 1: I assume you connect the son of Sam David Berkowitz
- 4:29Speaker 1: to the Talking Heads because of their tune cycle Killer.
- 4:32Speaker 1: But that song was actually released on Talking Heads seventy seven.
- 4:36Speaker 1: They're excellent record that was released cycle Killer on that
- 4:39Speaker 1: record about a month after Berkowitz was arrested. So this
- 4:46Speaker 1: serial killer wasn't listening to any keskersse. This cycle Killer,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I should say, wasn't listening to any Keuskersse, but he
- 4:52Speaker 1: was listening to halland Oates say it ain't so Sammy.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I find this to be super creepy as well, because
- 5:00Speaker 1: Hello Oates pre nineteen seventy eight output is dope, by
- 5:03Speaker 1: which I mean it's pretty sophisticated stuff, which means that
- 5:08Speaker 1: the son of Sam psychle killer that he was had
- 5:11Speaker 1: pretty great taste. This is pre man Eater hallo Oates,
- 5:14Speaker 1: This is rich Girl Hallooaates, This is Sarah Smile hall
- 5:18Speaker 1: of Oates. Honestly, I'm a little shocked by this one
- 5:21Speaker 1: because I kind of think of David Bergerwitz as like
- 5:23Speaker 1: a a drooling idiot who is afraid of barking dogs.
- 5:26Speaker 1: But whatever, whatever good musical taste. I guess John Wayne Gacy,
- 5:31Speaker 1: the so called killer Clown, listened to Ario Speedwagon. I guess.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I don't know. Feels like maybe investigators just found a
- 5:38Speaker 1: random a track in his basement and this is how
- 5:40Speaker 1: the myth got started. But I couldn't find much on
- 5:42Speaker 1: Gaysey's music taste, and honestly, I just pictureed John Wayne
- 5:45Speaker 1: Gacy running around his house and his clown get up
- 5:47Speaker 1: soundtrack to the Benny Hill Show theme music. Another weird one,
- 5:58Speaker 1: is Arthur Shawcross? Okay, is not how you say the
- 6:01Speaker 1: serial killer's name. Arthur Shawcross, a sick, sick individual who
- 6:07Speaker 1: murdered two children and eleven adults. Shawcross. If you look
- 6:11Speaker 1: at this guy, if you look at a picture of him,
- 6:12Speaker 1: he's older, gray hair, kind of portly, looks like a
- 6:16Speaker 1: dude you wouldn't want to pitch two in your softball
- 6:18Speaker 1: beer league. Kind of normy, kind of normal, but kind
- 6:21Speaker 1: of wrong at the same time. Anyway, this dude was
- 6:24Speaker 1: a gig Allen fan. Haw How you look at this
- 6:29Speaker 1: guy's at photo?
- 6:30Speaker 2: How?
- 6:30Speaker 1: How how did you get into gg Allen? That's what
- 6:32Speaker 1: I want to know now. According to my admittedly very
- 6:35Speaker 1: limited research on this, Ted Bundy did not listen to music.
- 6:40Speaker 1: He only listened to AM talk radio, which kind of
- 6:43Speaker 1: makes all the sense in the world if you think
- 6:45Speaker 1: about it. Now. He's not a serial killer or a
- 6:49Speaker 1: killer as far as we know, but it's been in
- 6:52Speaker 1: the news lately, so I have to hit upon what
- 6:55Speaker 1: Jeffrey Epstein was listening to while he was up to
- 6:58Speaker 1: his particular brand of no good, which, depending on who
- 7:00Speaker 1: you ask these days, means everything from sexually abusing minors
- 7:04Speaker 1: to plotting global pandemics to satanic ritual cannibalism aka pizza
- 7:08Speaker 1: and grape soda. Anyway, apparently Jeffrey Epstein had some pretty
- 7:12Speaker 1: on brand taste. Rolling Stone Magazine dug into his Spotify
- 7:17Speaker 1: Rapped from twenty sixteen. They dug that out of the
- 7:19Speaker 1: Epstein files, and I'm Coming Out by Diana Ross was
- 7:23Speaker 1: Epstein's most listened to song of that year. Do what
- 7:27Speaker 1: you will with that little bit of information. He Ain't Heavy,
- 7:30Speaker 1: He's My Brother by Marion Williams came in second on
- 7:34Speaker 1: Epstein's twenty sixteen rapped. He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I can just see the Hulu limited you know, scripted
- 7:45Speaker 1: eight part Jeffrey Epstein series right now with you know
- 7:49Speaker 1: it's Epstein in his Manhattan townhouse and he's just sitting
- 7:55Speaker 1: back at the end of the day with a nice
- 7:57Speaker 1: I don't know what's Epstein drinking, Yeah, cabernet, nice full
- 8:00Speaker 1: bodied cab and he's got his his feet up on
- 8:03Speaker 1: the table, on the coffee table with his his slippers
- 8:06Speaker 1: and maybe you know, he's in like he's got his
- 8:08Speaker 1: Pendleton blanket over him and he's he's listening to he
- 8:11Speaker 1: Ain't Heavy. He's my brother, and he's he's lamenting the
- 8:15Speaker 1: fact that Bill Gates won't call him back. I don't know.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't know that's how I picture it. We'll see. Anyways.
- 8:21Speaker 1: His third most played song was hold On I'm Coming
- 8:25Speaker 1: by Sam and Dave, and I'm not even gonna touch
- 8:27Speaker 1: that one. Anyways, I find this fascinating now that our
- 8:30Speaker 1: wormhole has widened, it's worth mentioning, of course, that Hitler
- 8:33Speaker 1: vibe on Wagner Siria's recently deposed brutal dictator in war
- 8:37Speaker 1: criminal Bosher al Asad, you know, the dude who used
- 8:40Speaker 1: chemical weapons on his own people. Well, when they hacked
- 8:44Speaker 1: into his iTunes account, they found out that mister war
- 8:48Speaker 1: criminal here dug himself a little I'm sexy and I
- 8:51Speaker 1: Know it by lmfao. He was also into right, said
- 8:56Speaker 1: friend's I'm too sexy. Of course, of course he was.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Look at the look at this guy. This shit makes
- 9:01Speaker 1: all the sense in the world when we look at
- 9:03Speaker 1: this guy, and I guess proves that evil transcends from
- 9:07Speaker 1: shitty politics to shitty musical taste as well. Anyways, Kim John,
- 9:11Speaker 1: I don't know, he's into some weird shit. I don't
- 9:13Speaker 1: know what any of this stuff is, and I'm sure
- 9:15Speaker 1: as hell I'm not going to try to pronounce any
- 9:16Speaker 1: of it. All right, I'm gonna keep going here, Kadafi,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you want some Goadafi got Affi. It was always it
- 9:21Speaker 1: was Kadaffi when I was growing up, and then it
- 9:23Speaker 1: became got Afi, just like it was always Nevada and
- 9:26Speaker 1: then it became Nevada. I don't know. This stuff just happens. Anyway.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Libya's dictator, got Afi had some mainstream pop taste. Okay,
- 9:35Speaker 1: dude liked Nelly Fertado, who performed for Good Afi for
- 9:40Speaker 1: Yes War Criminal that he was for a cool million dollars,
- 9:45Speaker 1: which I don't know, seems kind of light to me.
- 9:49Speaker 1: A mill is a mill, but you know how much
- 9:51Speaker 1: is he soul worth? I don't know. I'd have gone
- 9:53Speaker 1: eight figures Nelly, eight figures for Kadafi. Apparently Goaddafi was
- 9:58Speaker 1: also in CCSA CA Afi there. I just can't help it,
- 10:02Speaker 1: you know. Anyways, Getafi was also into Mariah fifty cent Beyonce,
- 10:07Speaker 1: And now we're getting into the subject of celebrities and
- 10:10Speaker 1: musicians who sold their souls and opened their bank accounts
- 10:15Speaker 1: to the cash for the cash, I should say, of
- 10:17Speaker 1: some really really bad people, massive amounts of cash, big big,
- 10:22Speaker 1: big fees. If you want to know what I'm talking about,
- 10:24Speaker 1: those musicians who took million dollar fees from brutal dictators
- 10:29Speaker 1: to perform at their I don't know, their parties, their
- 10:32Speaker 1: spoiled spoiled kids, birthday bashes, whatnot. Yeah, Beyonce fifty cent,
- 10:37Speaker 1: but also Kanye Sting, I did this. I did a
- 10:41Speaker 1: little bit on this about a year year ago. I
- 10:44Speaker 1: touched on in the After Party. But today Zeth and
- 10:46Speaker 1: I are going to go in deeper and have the names,
- 10:50Speaker 1: the dollar figures, the dictators, and the details in the
- 10:53Speaker 1: exclusive section of the After Party. Here. Go to disgracelandpod
- 10:57Speaker 1: dot com to sign up to become a disgrace Land
- 10:59Speaker 1: all access and unlock exclusive content like this, along with
- 11:03Speaker 1: ad free content as well. Finally, since around the subject
- 11:06Speaker 1: of war criminals, George W. Bush's favorite song is My
- 11:10Speaker 1: Sharona by The Knack, And now I can forgive w
- 11:13Speaker 1: for those weapons of mass destruction and all is right
- 11:15Speaker 1: in the world because the Knack in My Sharona just
- 11:19Speaker 1: kind of kicks ass, and honestly, just can you picture
- 11:21Speaker 1: w up in Canny Bunk right now. You know he's
- 11:24Speaker 1: on the backyard, he's roasted some hot dogs and he's
- 11:26Speaker 1: got my Sharona plan. I don't know, kind of cracks
- 11:29Speaker 1: me up. Okay, now we've gone from Towns van Zant
- 11:32Speaker 1: to the neck and uh, I think it's time we
- 11:36Speaker 1: can fully climb out of this this wormhole, this rabbit hole,
- 11:41Speaker 1: and back into reality. All right, this is what we
- 11:44Speaker 1: got cooking this week in Disgraceland. Obviously, the Towns van
- 11:48Speaker 1: Zant episode is there for you to check out. Right now,
- 11:50Speaker 1: We've also got a rewind on Surge Gainsburg coming up
- 11:54Speaker 1: on Friday in the rewind slot. And I should probably
- 11:58Speaker 1: mention that Surge Gainsburg. I found this in my research
- 12:02Speaker 1: this morning as well. Surge is a fave of that
- 12:04Speaker 1: old that old battle axe at old So and so,
- 12:07Speaker 1: that old muckety muck former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Just again,
- 12:13Speaker 1: picturing these people listening to this music is all the fun.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Angela Merkel and Serge Gainsburg. Ah, just it's what an image?
- 12:24Speaker 1: What an image? Surge. Listen. If you don't know Serge Gainsburg,
- 12:28Speaker 1: you should. He is one of the most interesting and
- 12:32Speaker 1: compelling and influential singers, songwriters, entertainers of the twentieth century.
- 12:39Speaker 1: Without him, you would not have Beck, you would not
- 12:42Speaker 1: have Pulp or Rufus Wainwright. He was a French Sinatra
- 12:48Speaker 1: with half the looks and twice the confidence. If you
- 12:51Speaker 1: can imagine that, all right. You also wouldn't have Whitney
- 12:54Speaker 1: Houston in one of the most insane live television moments
- 12:56Speaker 1: of all time. But you're gonna have to listen to
- 12:58Speaker 1: this Serge Gainsburg to find out what I am talking about,
- 13:02Speaker 1: all right, Next week our brand new episode on Chrissy
- 13:06Speaker 1: Hind from The Pretenders. Now, you might love the Pretenders
- 13:11Speaker 1: or you might just be like, yeah, the Pretenders are cool,
- 13:13Speaker 1: but I'm not a super fan and I don't really
- 13:16Speaker 1: care that much about their singer. But it doesn't matter, Okay, Well,
- 13:19Speaker 1: you don't know. If you're anything like me, you don't know.
- 13:21Speaker 1: What I didn't know before getting into this production of
- 13:24Speaker 1: this episode was is just how prevalent Chrissy Hind was
- 13:28Speaker 1: during the formative years of punk rock, and not in America.
- 13:32Speaker 1: She's American in England, and I didn't know this. I
- 13:37Speaker 1: didn't know about these massively consequential bands that Chrissy Hind
- 13:43Speaker 1: was there in the beginning, in the formative years of
- 13:46Speaker 1: these bands and was almost in. She was almost in
- 13:49Speaker 1: these bands. It's pretty incredible, pretty revelatory. And on the
- 13:52Speaker 1: true crime front concerning Christy Hein, she survived attacks, violence, predatory,
- 13:58Speaker 1: skis ball music journalist. Of course, it was the nineteen
- 14:00Speaker 1: seventies and a whole lot more to become the trailblazing
- 14:03Speaker 1: pop star that she became. So you're not gonna want
- 14:06Speaker 1: to miss this episode. Check it out. It's coming up
- 14:08Speaker 1: on Tuesday, and I can't wait for you to hear it.
- 14:11Speaker 1: And when you're listening to the Chrissy Hind episode, be
- 14:13Speaker 1: thinking about this question, who is the most badass female
- 14:18Speaker 1: musician in the history of rock and roll? There are
- 14:21Speaker 1: endless possibilities, but you only get to pick one, and
- 14:25Speaker 1: that's what makes this question so good. Call me six
- 14:28Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight, leave
- 14:31Speaker 1: a voicemail with your answer, Send me a text with
- 14:33Speaker 1: your answer, and you might hear your answer on next
- 14:36Speaker 1: week's after Priory Yard. I'm gonna take a quick break,
- 14:38Speaker 1: but I'll be back in the flash.
- 14:40Speaker 3: With your answers to last week's question of the week.
- 15:01Speaker 1: All right, this guys, welcome back into the after party.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Let's uh, let's quit the one way dialogue here and
- 15:06Speaker 1: bring y'all into the conversation. Six one seven, nine oh
- 15:09Speaker 1: six sixty six three eight. The folm lines are always
- 15:12Speaker 1: open here in disgracelaand call me, text me, leave me
- 15:16Speaker 1: a voicemail, just like Scott in the eight oh five.
- 15:21Speaker 4: This is Scott from the eight oh five. I love
- 15:24Speaker 4: the show, always have. I am just shocked that you
- 15:28Speaker 4: have not done an episode on Bobby Fuller yet. I
- 15:32Speaker 4: mean that mysterious death is right for the picking. Would
- 15:39Speaker 4: love to hear your take on it. Keep up the
- 15:42Speaker 4: great work.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Rock a rolla, Scott. You're absolutely right. You are one
- 15:46Speaker 1: hundred correct. I've actually researched this episode fully intending to
- 15:50Speaker 1: write an episode on Bobby Fuller, and there were two
- 15:55Speaker 1: times that this happened, where it was it was scheduled
- 15:58Speaker 1: and then it got pushed one time. I don't remember
- 16:01Speaker 1: the first time why we didn't do it. The second time,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I was going to do a live thing in Austin, Texas,
- 16:06Speaker 1: and Bobby being a Texas artist, it made sense. And
- 16:10Speaker 1: then that I had to cancel. I had to cancel
- 16:12Speaker 1: that event. Unfortunately it did not happen, but Bobby is
- 16:16Speaker 1: on the schedule and we will get into this. You're right,
- 16:19Speaker 1: it is a mysterious death that is right for the
- 16:21Speaker 1: picking and I cannot wait to share the Bobby Fullish
- 16:24Speaker 1: story with all you guys. It's an insane, insane collision
- 16:28Speaker 1: of music and true crime. Appreciate the push, Scott. All right,
- 16:31Speaker 1: let's check out this voicemail from the three three seven
- 16:35Speaker 1: on this week's Question of the Week. We got to
- 16:37Speaker 1: this question because of Towns of vans Aant, because Towns
- 16:39Speaker 1: van Zant lived his life in a very authentic way
- 16:43Speaker 1: and as such, sacrificed a lot and ultimately, I believe
- 16:48Speaker 1: died because of it. And there's a lot of artists
- 16:50Speaker 1: who have done that, who've sacrificed kind of everything for
- 16:53Speaker 1: their art and gave it all up and it's a
- 16:55Speaker 1: damn shame. Anyways, the question was which artists have done
- 17:00Speaker 1: that in the past that you're a fan of, et cetera.
- 17:02Speaker 1: All right, check out this voicemail from Cody and where's
- 17:06Speaker 1: Cody calling from the three three seven.
- 17:09Speaker 5: Hey, this is Cody from the three three seven. I
- 17:12Speaker 5: was calling him about your question.
- 17:14Speaker 1: For this week.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And I'll be honest, like there's a lot. It's hard,
- 17:18Speaker 2: and I got a dark horse, but a couple of
- 17:20Speaker 2: them on the top of my head. I mean, I
- 17:22Speaker 2: know we talked about Bob Marley. I mean, not only
- 17:25Speaker 2: did he spend his own money to go to Zimbabwe,
- 17:27Speaker 2: but he also got sick, you know, from sleep on
- 17:29Speaker 2: the floors and everything and Dariance Torentsi bibways. Also he
- 17:34Speaker 2: did perform that concert live on his own dime too,
- 17:38Speaker 2: I think, or it was free or something like that.
- 17:40Speaker 5: But then also he had David Bowie. I think, did
- 17:42Speaker 5: he like get diagnosed with.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Like psychosis or something for like how you know, dedicated
- 17:47Speaker 2: to his craft, but also like how set he came
- 17:49Speaker 2: to his music.
- 17:50Speaker 5: I think it was like when he made Black Start.
- 17:53Speaker 5: You know, it was like the last eighteen months of
- 17:55Speaker 5: his life he spent you know, producing that, you know,
- 17:58Speaker 5: I mean knowing that, you know, with his own health
- 18:00Speaker 5: and everything, and come go in and you know, he said,
- 18:03Speaker 5: I'm gonna go out and.
- 18:04Speaker 1: Do what I do, what I love to do.
- 18:07Speaker 5: And also I was gonna also respond to your question
- 18:09Speaker 5: a couple of weeks ago about the most influencial you know,
- 18:12Speaker 5: bands outside of the United States and also Great Britain
- 18:16Speaker 5: kind of a modern take. But there's also some somebody
- 18:18Speaker 5: that I was gonna say for this week's question too,
- 18:22Speaker 5: is is that pumped. I mean, nobody really knew who
- 18:25Speaker 5: these guys were for just about all their career. You know,
- 18:28Speaker 5: that was the whole point.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Of the Robot helmet.
- 18:31Speaker 5: Yeah, he brought a lot of attention.
- 18:32Speaker 2: To them and everything, but they also had to you know,
- 18:36Speaker 2: sacrifice all the same that they would get, you know,
- 18:39Speaker 2: being recognized in the streets, being on top billboards, everything,
- 18:43Speaker 2: nobody would know what they look like.
- 18:45Speaker 5: But yeah, I love the podcast. Thank you for everything
- 18:48Speaker 5: that you do, and hopefully I'll be able to hear myself.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Thanks for the call, Thanks for the answer. I appreciate it.
- 18:55Speaker 1: Bob Marley, Yeah, yeah, I get it. I get it.
- 18:59Speaker 1: I mean he survived. If he died on stage, you
- 19:03Speaker 1: could absolutely make the claim. But he survived, and so
- 19:07Speaker 1: that's a tough one for me. The Bowie one, though,
- 19:10Speaker 1: is very interesting. You know, there's you can make the
- 19:14Speaker 1: case that he nearly lost his mind. He nearly lost
- 19:18Speaker 1: his mind during those cocaine years, those LA years. They
- 19:22Speaker 1: were really tough for him, but he didn't lose his mind,
- 19:26Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So the sacrifice and then
- 19:30Speaker 1: the Black Star thing. That's really interesting because I don't
- 19:33Speaker 1: think any of us really know how much I mean,
- 19:36Speaker 1: he made that album while he was dying. We all
- 19:38Speaker 1: know that making an album is a tremendous amount of
- 19:43Speaker 1: work and exertion, and who knows how that affected him
- 19:46Speaker 1: and impacted his death. I guess we don't know. Maybe
- 19:49Speaker 1: we will at some point. That record's incredible, by the way,
- 19:53Speaker 1: just amazing, just great stuff. Thank you for reminding me
- 19:57Speaker 1: of it. Thank you for the message. I want to
- 19:59Speaker 1: hit on down punk real quick as well. Yeah, I
- 20:03Speaker 1: guess they they sacrificed their a portion of their fame
- 20:08Speaker 1: for a different kind of fame in that they were anonymous, Right,
- 20:12Speaker 1: that's what you're saying. And that's a really kind of
- 20:13Speaker 1: nuanced take, and I dig it and I appreciate it.
- 20:16Speaker 1: All these takes are great. Thank you. Three three seven,
- 20:19Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six six three eight.
- 20:21Speaker 1: You guys want to leave me a voicemail or send
- 20:23Speaker 1: me a text on question of the week or anything
- 20:25Speaker 1: really nine one three text in and the answer to
- 20:29Speaker 1: the question of the week. Billy Holiday, for sure, and yeah, absolutely.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I was reading again about Billy Holiday this week in
- 20:35Speaker 1: reference to the Patti Smith episode that I'm producing that
- 20:38Speaker 1: i'm researching, actually writing right now, and I was just
- 20:43Speaker 1: reading about the final moments of her life, and it's
- 20:48Speaker 1: it's so awful, it's so bad. It's just you're absolutely right.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Nine one three, nine to two zero writes in what's
- 20:56Speaker 1: some episode suggestions Ministry, New World Order, Queen's Reich Operation,
- 21:03Speaker 1: mind Crime, compare and contrast to the times they were
- 21:07Speaker 1: released compared to today prophetic af interesting. I thought New
- 21:12Speaker 1: World Order was pretty of the moment. I gotta say,
- 21:15Speaker 1: I felt like we were in the New World Order
- 21:17Speaker 1: when Ministry released that. But I dig the text. Thanks
- 21:20Speaker 1: nine too. Oh Hi, it's Alien Beanie and you read
- 21:24Speaker 1: my comment, Alien Beanie. I think what you mean is
- 21:26Speaker 1: I read your review, to which I say, thank you
- 21:30Speaker 1: for the review, Alien Beanie. I'm writing you back right now.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I'm texting me back. Hold on, all right, get back
- 21:40Speaker 1: to me. We'll hook you up with some merch. Alien Beanie.
- 21:43Speaker 1: Let the review for Disgraceland and I read it here apparently,
- 21:46Speaker 1: and I'm gonna send her him he she I'm not
- 21:51Speaker 1: exactly sure, just a little thank you, you know. Sometimes
- 21:54Speaker 1: the thank you's coming as a T shirt, sometimes they
- 21:57Speaker 1: come as a pin, sometimes they come as a signed book.
- 22:00Speaker 2: You know.
- 22:00Speaker 1: It depends on what I got going on that day.
- 22:03Speaker 1: So grizz Girl writes on Apple Podcasts, five stars makes
- 22:08Speaker 1: me cooler. This is the podcast I share with friends
- 22:11Speaker 1: more than any other. I get the secret backstories, the
- 22:14Speaker 1: why and the how. Even artists I never gave a
- 22:17Speaker 1: second thought to. Now I know a little more in
- 22:20Speaker 1: a fun and interesting way. Somehow, at the end of
- 22:22Speaker 1: the episode, I feel just a little cooler than I
- 22:24Speaker 1: did before. I love this, Griz Girl. I love it.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I love it. Thank you great review. I want us
- 22:31Speaker 1: all to feel a little cooler. God knows I could
- 22:33Speaker 1: be a little cooler. Not that I care about being cool,
- 22:35Speaker 1: because you know, if you care about being cool, how
- 22:37Speaker 1: cool are you really? And I know that's not exactly
- 22:39Speaker 1: what you're saying, grizz Girl. You're just saying you feel
- 22:41Speaker 1: a little cooler, And I get that. Sometimes I put
- 22:43Speaker 1: on a you know, a vintage Jake Crew T shirt
- 22:46Speaker 1: that I found on eBay and paid a stupid amount
- 22:48Speaker 1: of money for it, I feel a little cooler. I
- 22:49Speaker 1: can't help it. I'm concerned with worldly things. I'm not perfect, guys,
- 22:53Speaker 1: I'm trying it. Anyways, Get in touch, grizz girl, Get
- 22:57Speaker 1: in touch, and if any of you guys want to
- 22:59Speaker 1: leave a room for Disgrace on an Apple Podcasts or Spotify,
- 23:02Speaker 1: feel free. And if you hear your review read here,
- 23:06Speaker 1: you may win some free merch. All right, you guys
- 23:09Speaker 1: want to get in touch, you can also email me
- 23:11Speaker 1: Disgrace Sampod at gmail dot com. Ted writes us from
- 23:15Speaker 1: I don't know where, but Ted says, Hey, I discovered
- 23:17Speaker 1: your podcast about a year or so ago. I'm a
- 23:20Speaker 1: pretty faithful listener. I love music, and I want to
- 23:23Speaker 1: let you know that your subjects and stories are super cool.
- 23:26Speaker 1: I just came off of listening to all three of
- 23:28Speaker 1: your Grateful Dead episodes, and I spread the word to
- 23:30Speaker 1: a lot of my brothers and sisters about how great
- 23:32Speaker 1: you are. In these days a very shallow and vapid
- 23:35Speaker 1: podcasts that are based on week journalism, you stand out
- 23:38Speaker 1: by a mile. Keep up the good work, Ted, Thank
- 23:39Speaker 1: you so much. It's good to hear from the dead
- 23:41Speaker 1: heads here the Dead fans, because I get a lot
- 23:43Speaker 1: of shit from Grateful Dead fans. I'm not gonna lie,
- 23:45Speaker 1: and yeah, I really couldn't care. I don't care, you know,
- 23:48Speaker 1: give me all the shit, it doesn't matter. I have
- 23:50Speaker 1: my opinions there what they are. They just are what
- 23:52Speaker 1: they are. I'm not going to alter them. I love
- 23:54Speaker 1: the Grateful Dead. Maybe I don't love them as much
- 23:56Speaker 1: as some people, but I do love them. Okay, and Ted,
- 24:00Speaker 1: I like that. You know, whatever criticism I've had of
- 24:02Speaker 1: the Dead in the past, it did not rub you
- 24:03Speaker 1: and your dead head ways the wrong way. So thanks
- 24:06Speaker 1: for writing I appreciate it. Over on our Patreon and
- 24:08Speaker 1: get some new members. Joey Christensen Patty Drake wanted to

- 24:49Speaker 1: here from Instagram. Hold on one second. This is from
- 24:53Speaker 1: my old friend Matt Pinn Pedal Steel Player to the Stars.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Matt plays with some pretty big artists like Biggest of
- 25:00Speaker 1: the Big and he writes on our bob we're Bohemian
- 25:05Speaker 1: Grove post. He writes, I recently was invited to the
- 25:08Speaker 1: Bohemian Dot dot dot and I can't tell, Matt if
- 25:11Speaker 1: you're fucking with me or not. I hope you're not.
- 25:13Speaker 1: I hope you're being serious. You certainly got the style
- 25:16Speaker 1: to pull off a visit to Bohemian Grove. I can
- 25:18Speaker 1: see you all snug up there and uh whatever, get
- 25:22Speaker 1: up you you got going your stylish individual and it
- 25:26Speaker 1: works for that kind of outdoor campfirey campfire re vibe
- 25:30Speaker 1: that the Bohemian Grove has going on, you know, in
- 25:32Speaker 1: between sacrificing children and all that stuff. Aways, Matt, I
- 25:35Speaker 1: hope you're not kidding. I hope you're being serious and
- 25:38Speaker 1: get in touch if you are, and I want to
- 25:40Speaker 1: know more. I want to know more about your your
- 25:42Speaker 1: quest to Bohemian Grove. All right, listen, I got to
- 25:46Speaker 1: take a quick break. It's quicker for those of you
- 25:49Speaker 1: who are All Access members. By the way. We just
- 25:52Speaker 1: play like a couple seconds of music. There's no ads,
- 25:54Speaker 1: no nothing, Just come right back in. Anyways, take a
- 25:57Speaker 1: quick break, back in the flat. All right. I'm back
- 26:11Speaker 1: recording this on a Wednesday. You're gonna hear it on
- 26:13Speaker 1: a Thursday. Get a lot going on today. Gonna watch
- 26:16Speaker 1: Big Lebowski tonight again. I saw Big Lebowski in the
- 26:19Speaker 1: theaters Seris Town Mall Lemonster Mass. Shout out to the
- 26:25Speaker 1: dude from who is the projector at the sears toown
- 26:28Speaker 1: mall who hit me up a couple weeks ago. I'm
- 26:31Speaker 1: watching Big Lebowski again tonight, willfully, joyously, because the Big
- 26:37Speaker 1: Lebowski is the next film that we are covering in
- 26:42Speaker 1: this film should be played loud. Are All Access exclusive
- 26:46Speaker 1: video podcast for Patreon members. Where's Zeth Lundy and I
- 26:49Speaker 1: Doctor Zeth Lundy, excuse me? Where we dissect and discuss
- 26:53Speaker 1: great musical soundtracks and scores from our favorite movies. So
- 26:58Speaker 1: pumped to do this Big Lebowski episode. Think of it.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Think of the great music, and I actually I actually
- 27:03Speaker 1: know the dude who's responsible for the music in The
- 27:05Speaker 1: Big Lebowski. So that's that's gonna make for some pretty
- 27:09Speaker 1: interesting conversation. But think of all the great music and
- 27:13Speaker 1: the central role music has, not just as as soundtrack,
- 27:17Speaker 1: but just I mean, Amy Mann's in this movie. Flee
- 27:20Speaker 1: is in this movie, Jeff Bridges, I can't. I'm just
- 27:26Speaker 1: thinking of the Creed and stuff. It's so good. Anyways,
- 27:29Speaker 1: I gotta watch that tonight because we are filming that
- 27:32Speaker 1: tomorrow and it'll be out next week next week, And
- 27:37Speaker 1: if you want to watch it, you can do so
- 27:39Speaker 1: on Patreon. Gonna be an all access member. You know
- 27:41Speaker 1: how to sign up disgrace sampod dot com and that'll
- 27:44Speaker 1: get you in and we hope to see you over
- 27:46Speaker 1: there all right. Last week I spoke to you guys
- 27:50Speaker 1: about my Love for Love Story, the John F. Kennedy
- 27:54Speaker 1: Junior Carolyn Beset series on Hulu produced by the great
- 27:59Speaker 1: Ryan Murphy, and you know, it just reminded me we
- 28:04Speaker 1: used to do recommendations all the time on this show
- 28:09Speaker 1: and it was great and I didn't have a reason
- 28:12Speaker 1: for stopping doing it. We talked about movies and films
- 28:16Speaker 1: and TV and records and books, lots of book talk
- 28:19Speaker 1: in the past. I think I stopped doing it because
- 28:24Speaker 1: I don't know, it just became like too much, too
- 28:27Speaker 1: much of the conversation. But that's dumb. You know. We're
- 28:30Speaker 1: always trying to make these episodes a specific length based
- 28:34Speaker 1: on a bunch of different things. I'm not going to
- 28:36Speaker 1: bore you with the details. Maybe that's why. Maybe I
- 28:39Speaker 1: was trying to be more efficient. I don't know, but
- 28:42Speaker 1: I love recommendations, and I know you guys do as well.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I love talking about stuff, even if it's cheesy stuff
- 28:48Speaker 1: you wouldn't expect, like this JFK story, which is believe me,
- 28:53Speaker 1: it's full on cheese, but it's great. I've posted about
- 28:56Speaker 1: it in the Patreon chat, and honestly, you guys are
- 28:58Speaker 1: like what, I don't know, very very little action on it.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I know I'm not the only one watching this damn
- 29:04Speaker 1: series anyhow. More Rex is what I'm saying. More Rex.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Right now, I'm in a hole. I'm caught up on
- 29:11Speaker 1: Love Story and it comes out once a week, which
- 29:14Speaker 1: I can't stand. I like the binge like most people.
- 29:18Speaker 1: So I'm just sitting all week waiting around for Friday
- 29:20Speaker 1: night for this thing to pop again, and I got nothing.
- 29:24Speaker 1: So send of your recommendations is what I'm saying. I
- 29:26Speaker 1: need some tv REX series, you know series. I think
- 29:30Speaker 1: I'm going to do The Killing? Have you guys watched
- 29:32Speaker 1: The Killing? It's an older kind of true crime show
- 29:35Speaker 1: twenty fifteen ish. I'm intrigued because Patty Smith loves the show.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Loved this show, was devastated when it was canceled. Patty
- 29:44Speaker 1: Smith had some excellent, excellent television tastes. She's a law
- 29:48Speaker 1: and order fan. Patti Smith is kind of She's kind
- 29:53Speaker 1: of the original true crime girl. That's what I've learned
- 29:56Speaker 1: from my research. Like if she if she were of
- 30:00Speaker 1: this generation, our generation, she would absolutely be like my
- 30:03Speaker 1: favorite murder listener. She probably isn't my favorite murder listener.
- 30:08Speaker 1: She's she's pretty open and she's pretty she's into some
- 30:10Speaker 1: stuff I don't know about podcasts, but television. It's pretty
- 30:14Speaker 1: incredible what her obsession with some of these true crime shows.
- 30:19Speaker 1: And I'm learning it stems back kind of similar to me.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And I'm sure a bunch of as it is with
- 30:25Speaker 1: a bunch of you guys as well. It stems back
- 30:27Speaker 1: to how to the true crime that she was exposed
- 30:31Speaker 1: to growing up versus a kid in New Jersey, in
- 30:35Speaker 1: her mom, what her mom was into her, her mom
- 30:38Speaker 1: was obsessed with with the Lindberg case when her mom
- 30:41Speaker 1: was young, and that that kind of took over the
- 30:43Speaker 1: radio airways for about ten weeks. It was, honestly, it
- 30:46Speaker 1: was like the first podcast ever before we even do
- 30:48Speaker 1: what podcasts were. But that kind of the myth of
- 30:51Speaker 1: that that true crime case lived large in Patty Smith's house,
- 30:54Speaker 1: you know. And then later, of course there's the whole
- 30:56Speaker 1: Manson thing that kind of you know, enraptured you know,
- 30:59Speaker 1: everybody nineteen sixty nine who is a fan of rock
- 31:02Speaker 1: and roll. And then of course her time in New
- 31:05Speaker 1: York with the son of Sam who I was talking
- 31:07Speaker 1: about earlier, and all of this I believe kind of
- 31:10Speaker 1: led to her surviving actually unlike a lot of her contemporaries,
- 31:16Speaker 1: and to her taste now in this kind of true
- 31:20Speaker 1: crimey television series stuff. It's pretty interesting. Anyways, that's all
- 31:25Speaker 1: gonna be mixed up in my Patti Smith story, which
- 31:28Speaker 1: I'll have for you in a couple of weeks, and
- 31:29Speaker 1: I cannot wait for you to hear anyways recommendations. Maybe
- 31:35Speaker 1: what we'll start doing is maybe, you know, Zeth and
- 31:39Speaker 1: I were doing them in the wrap party, maybe we'll
- 31:40Speaker 1: start doing them more over there and some here. Why
- 31:43Speaker 1: not both? Why not give the people what they want? Right?
- 31:46Speaker 1: You know what I want? I want a football team
- 31:48Speaker 1: next year that doesn't suck now, and beyond that, I
- 31:50Speaker 1: want a football team next year that's going to win
- 31:52Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. So now it's time for the Sports
- 31:55Speaker 1: Rand sponsored by Five Hour Energy and their Fruity Rainbow
- 31:58Speaker 1: flavored Treat your taste buds to an ex explosion of

- 32:10Speaker 1: All right, guys, listen. We were in the dead zone
- 32:13Speaker 1: last week, the sports dead zone, you know, reduced to
- 32:15Speaker 1: watching Slapshot for the seventeenth time and Rocky and whatever
- 32:18Speaker 1: other sports movie is your flavor. We're no longer there
- 32:23Speaker 1: because it's NFL Free agency and I was expecting something
- 32:26Speaker 1: big to happen, and maybe it will by the time
- 32:27Speaker 1: you listen to this. I was expecting the Patriots, the Patriots,
- 32:30Speaker 1: honestly to sign Peers from the Colts, big splashy free
- 32:33Speaker 1: agent signing wide receiver. Bring them in, let's do it.
- 32:37Speaker 1: I was convinced, but they didn't, not yet anyways, Well
- 32:41Speaker 1: not with Pierce. He re signed with the Colts, and
- 32:44Speaker 1: now they might have to trade for aj Brown. Theyre
- 32:45Speaker 1: going to have to give up draft picks. And I
- 32:47Speaker 1: don't like that. I don't like it at all. Why
- 32:50Speaker 1: you're the Patriots? Why acting like the Red Sox. Spend
- 32:53Speaker 1: the money. Spend it. You like the third biggest franchise
- 32:58Speaker 1: sports franchise in the world, fourth whatever it is. It's
- 33:00Speaker 1: like Yankees, Cowboys, man you and then the Patriots. What's up?
- 33:05Speaker 1: You got the bread? Spend it? Make us proud? Drake
- 33:08Speaker 1: May is not winning the Super Bowl with some low
- 33:12Speaker 1: rent Stephan Diggs replacement. Why why'd you let gold Digs too? Cardib?
- 33:15Speaker 1: Was that why you don't like Cardib? Come on, she's entertaining.
- 33:18Speaker 1: What's up? I think Cardib? Let go of Stefan diggsough Anyways,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I am digressing, But that's what these rants are all about,
- 33:25Speaker 1: you know, you just kind of they just they just
- 33:27Speaker 1: take you somewhere. Anyways, that was a sports rant sponsored
- 33:29Speaker 1: by Five Hour Energies Fruity Rainbow Flavor. Treat yourself to
- 33:32Speaker 1: a candy like flavor explosion and satisfy your sweet tooth

- 33:39Speaker 1: in on the candy flavored chaos online at www dot
- 33:43Speaker 1: five hour Energy dot com or Amazon today. All right,
- 33:47Speaker 1: all Access members, we're about to get into our exclusive
- 33:50Speaker 1: portion of the after party right here. Wanted to update
- 33:52Speaker 1: the All Access members. We've been doing these mini episodes
- 33:55Speaker 1: for the past few months. It's part of our offering.
- 33:58Speaker 1: They're ten minute stories that are driven out of the
- 34:03Speaker 1: subject matter from that week's full episode. So, for example,
- 34:08Speaker 1: we've got Chrissy Hein coming up next week, and the
- 34:12Speaker 1: mini episode is about how Chrissy Hein was directly responsible
- 34:16Speaker 1: for launching the career of the Violent Fems. It's a
- 34:19Speaker 1: great story. The story, however, just it didn't fit into
- 34:22Speaker 1: the story that we were telling, so we figured we'd
- 34:25Speaker 1: find a way to do it in a separate piece
- 34:28Speaker 1: of content. But here's the thing. Rather than give you
- 34:32Speaker 1: an extra bit on the menu, we're just going to
- 34:35Speaker 1: increase the portion size, so to speak, from here on out,
- 34:39Speaker 1: we're doing away with the mini episodes, and we're going
- 34:41Speaker 1: to start to give you slightly longer full episodes, probably
- 34:44Speaker 1: about forty minutes. Some are already forty minutes are some
- 34:47Speaker 1: go much longer, but typically they're usually around thirty minutes long.
- 34:51Speaker 1: And we just figured, hey, why are we limiting ourselves
- 34:54Speaker 1: to our storytelling. Let's just give them the whole story.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Find a way to make it work in the narrative.
- 34:59Speaker 1: We're not here. This tremendous roar of approval from you
- 35:02Speaker 1: guys on the mini episodes seems like the all access
- 35:06Speaker 1: offering that you guys are most stoked on. You know,
- 35:09Speaker 1: it's the extra content, but that's the after party extra content,
- 35:12Speaker 1: or it's the this film should be played loud content,
- 35:16Speaker 1: or it's the ad free listening. Those are the two things,
- 35:19Speaker 1: plus the community piece of the Patreon chat. Those are
- 35:22Speaker 1: the things that we know matter to you guys most.
- 35:25Speaker 1: This thing just just feels like a little, you know,
- 35:28Speaker 1: a little hanging extra thing there that we're having to do,
- 35:31Speaker 1: and nobody's really vibing on it. It's hard to find
- 35:34Speaker 1: how it all fits together. So Like I said, we're
