Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This Friday. It is Do It for Dolly Day, a
- 0:03Speaker 1: national day dedicated to bringing the community together, spreading kindness
- 0:08Speaker 1: and uniting in taking a stand against bullying. And one
- 0:13Speaker 1: in four Australian school students between the years of four
- 0:16Speaker 1: and nine are being bullied. One in seven of them
- 0:19Speaker 1: won't actually tell anyone. So that's over three hundred and
- 0:22Speaker 1: forty thousand young people staying silent. Now, many of you
- 0:28Speaker 1: will know that Dolly Everett was one of those students
- 0:31Speaker 1: being bullied. She was only fourteen when she took her
- 0:34Speaker 1: life in January back in twenty eighteen, following relentless and
- 0:39Speaker 1: sustained bullying and cyber bullying. Now many of you will
- 0:44Speaker 1: know my next guest and know her incredible family. We
- 0:48Speaker 1: know that they were determined that no other family would
- 0:51Speaker 1: suffer the same devastation. Dolly's parents Tick and Kate Everett.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And I'm pleased to say that Tick joins me on
- 0:58Speaker 1: the line right now. Good mine, Auning.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Tich Katie, how are you good?
- 1:03Speaker 1: Mate? So good to have you on the show. And
- 1:07Speaker 1: we try to catch up around this time every year
- 1:09Speaker 1: because I just think it's such an important day.
- 1:13Speaker 2: It is, Katie, Yeah, no, and we do appreciate your support,
- 1:16Speaker 2: but now the main main object of the day is
- 1:19Speaker 2: to break down that silence and get our kids to
- 1:22Speaker 2: talk to us. That's the that's the ultimate goal for us.
- 1:26Speaker 1: It really is. And I say it, you know, I've
- 1:29Speaker 1: said it before, I'll say it again. The work that
- 1:31Speaker 1: you and Kate have done is absolutely phenomenal following on
- 1:36Speaker 1: from the tragedy that your family has lived through. What
- 1:40Speaker 1: is the focus really for Dolly's Dream or for for
- 1:43Speaker 1: do it for Dolly Day?
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, Katie, I mean it's not only Kate and I
- 1:48Speaker 2: mean we've got an amazing team with us, and you know,
- 1:51Speaker 2: the territory is an amazing community that supports us, like
- 1:55Speaker 2: right around Australia do But I mean the key messaging
- 1:58Speaker 2: for Dolly Day is just to break silence around bullying,
- 2:01Speaker 2: you know, watching out for the signs of bullying and
- 2:05Speaker 2: you know, just try and help parents to pick a
- 2:08Speaker 2: good time to speak to their kids. You know that
- 2:10Speaker 2: whether it's on a school run or going to sport
- 2:13Speaker 2: on a weekend or slipping down to the shops to
- 2:16Speaker 2: get some groceries. Just get that bit of trust in
- 2:18Speaker 2: your kids and see how they're going. And you know
- 2:22Speaker 2: it hindsight, it's a wonderful thing. Like I keep on saying,
- 2:25Speaker 2: But the more conversations you can have, you know, the
- 2:29Speaker 2: more chance you've got to catching this before it before
- 2:31Speaker 2: it slip through the cracks.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And it can be hard. You know, sometimes your kids
- 2:36Speaker 1: don't actually really want to talk to you about some
- 2:38Speaker 1: of this stuff.
- 2:40Speaker 2: That's right. It is a big thing. You know, kids
- 2:44Speaker 2: they got that fear of retaliation from the from the bullies,
- 2:48Speaker 2: or a bit of embarrassment, or you know, they're not
- 2:51Speaker 2: quite sure they can trust mom and dad or an
- 2:54Speaker 2: auntie or a big sister or whoever it might be.
- 2:56Speaker 2: But you know, a lot of times just don't know
- 3:01Speaker 2: how to ask for help. And we can't blame kids
- 3:03Speaker 2: for that because, to be quite honest, there's a lot
- 3:05Speaker 2: of adults that don't know how to ask for help.
- 3:07Speaker 2: So yep, it's all about reassurance and positivity. You know,
- 3:11Speaker 2: Friday Friday is a big day. And yeah it's called
- 3:14Speaker 2: do it for Dolliday, but I mean, ultimately for us,
- 3:17Speaker 2: it's it's doing for all the all the other little
- 3:19Speaker 2: dollies that are still out there.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Yeah, you're so right, you know, Like I've actually had
- 3:24Speaker 1: conversations with my kids and spoken to them about Dolly
- 3:27Speaker 1: and spoken to them about why it is really important
- 3:30Speaker 1: for them to tell me if there is something that's
- 3:33Speaker 1: happening in their lives that's you know, that is that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: heavy or that's hard, because like you've said, you've got
- 3:38Speaker 1: to actually talk about it.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it, mate. I mean, it affects so much
- 3:43Speaker 2: of their life. You know, there's a little fellow and
- 3:46Speaker 2: he's struggling or she's struggling, and they don't want to
- 3:48Speaker 2: go to sport or you know, they don't want to
- 3:50Speaker 2: participate in school as much as they would normally. It
- 3:53Speaker 2: can affect them for the rest of their lives. So
- 3:56Speaker 2: it's a it's a major thing.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Yeah, Tick tell us as well. You know, I understand
- 4:01Speaker 1: that there is support available for parents too if they
- 4:04Speaker 1: you know, if they are concerned about their kids and
- 4:06Speaker 1: and they're trying to have those conversations, but it's maybe
- 4:09Speaker 1: a bit more difficult.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah. So we've got a couple of programs. We've got
- 4:13Speaker 2: the Parent Hub. Obviously, it's all the all the w's
- 4:18Speaker 2: and online there or Facebook, there's all the links through there.
- 4:21Speaker 2: But I mean there's some good there's some good material
- 4:23Speaker 2: there that you can read through on how to break
- 4:26Speaker 2: down that barrier with your kids and how to get
- 4:28Speaker 2: them to talk to you. Yep, I mean there's there's
- 4:33Speaker 2: you know, we've got programs that we can that we're
- 4:35Speaker 2: happy to put into schools, and we've also now got
- 4:39Speaker 2: the Silly Stream support line that it's now actually twenty
- 4:45Speaker 2: four hours, seven days a week now, So I mean,
- 4:49Speaker 2: I know that it's awesome lines out there, but yeah,
- 4:51Speaker 2: we're just we're just trying to close the gaps. But
- 4:54Speaker 2: I mean, the biggest thing is if you're if you're
- 4:58Speaker 2: not getting the help that you need, or you're not
- 5:00Speaker 2: the answers that you're looking for, then don't be like
- 5:03Speaker 2: don't be like me and stop looking. So just keep going.
- 5:07Speaker 2: There's always some information there somewhere, mate.
- 5:10Speaker 1: You I know, you guys have done so much, such
- 5:13Speaker 1: a phenomenal, phenomenal thing since losing your girl, and it's
- 5:19Speaker 1: it's you know, it's unbelievable, but it's also so incredibly helpful.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I think to other parents in the community, people like
- 5:25Speaker 1: myself who've got kids that you know, not quite at
- 5:28Speaker 1: that teenage age, but you want to make sure that
- 5:30Speaker 1: you're doing everything that you can to support them. So
- 5:33Speaker 1: I appreciate the work that you do. I know so
- 5:35Speaker 1: many other territory families and families right around the nation
- 5:39Speaker 1: appreciate the work that you and Kate and your team do.
- 5:43Speaker 1: So thank you on behalf of all of us for
- 5:45Speaker 1: the work that you do. And keep on doing it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I know it must be hard, but please keep on
- 5:51Speaker 1: doing it and keep spreading that message.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Good on you, Katie, and thank you very much for
- 5:56Speaker 2: everyone's support. We can't do it without you, fellows, so
- 6:00Speaker 2: thank you. Yeah.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Oh mate, Now tell us just very quickly before you go,
- 6:04Speaker 1: if people do want to get involved in do it
- 6:07Speaker 1: for Dolly Day, what can they do? They can jump online?
- 6:10Speaker 1: They can find some more info on Facebook or anywhere,
- 6:12Speaker 1: really can't they?
- 6:14Speaker 2: They can, mate, Yeah, I mean it's everywhere online. It
- 6:17Speaker 2: is literally everywhere. Search Dolly's Dream or Facebook or Instagram
- 6:22Speaker 2: whatever your flash thing is. And yeah, and we just
- 6:26Speaker 2: asked people to raise awareness. That's the biggest thing for Friday.
- 6:29Speaker 2: The more messaging we can get out there, the more
- 6:31Speaker 2: chance we've got of saving another life.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah you spot on Tick always good to speak with you.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Passing my love to Kate as
- 6:40Speaker 1: well and all the very best for Friday.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Good on you, Katie really appreciate it, mate, Thank you.
