- 0:12Hello, friends, it's Sean here. Welcome.
- 0:15Today it is the 29th of May. It's a Wednesday, and today we
- 0:20are going to be opening up a new book of our Bibles.
- 0:23We're going to be opening up the book of Ecclesiastes, which, Oh
- 0:26dear, I have heard pronounced as Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiastes,
- 0:31Ecclesiastes, Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes, you might notice,
- 0:37sounds a bit like ecclesiastical, right?
- 0:40Things to do with the church. Well, Ecclesiastes is directly
- 0:43translated as a book of the church.
- 0:47This is a book that is shared with us by this teacher, not
- 0:51necessarily Solomon, but this teacher who calls himself
- 0:55Koheleth, and he shares the wisdom of Solomon and often
- 0:59provides kind of like an insider's critique of wisdom.
- 1:03And a lot of people will read this book and go, oh, it's so
- 1:06hopeless. It's so pessimistic and
- 1:08depressing. Well, a lot of it asks the big
- 1:12questions about meaning and life, but there are also parts
- 1:15that say, actually, there is hope here.
- 1:18And there is there is tension throughout the book of Clesio
- 1:21Estes between this hope and this meaningless, as the author asks,
- 1:26where do we look for hope? Where do we look for meaning in
- 1:29our lives? And the opening chapter begins
- 1:32by saying, is there anything under the sun, anything in our
- 1:35lives here right now that can give us hope and meaning?
- 1:39And if you have ever asked yourself these questions, well,
- 1:42friends, I'm pretty much sure that's every one of us, then
- 1:46this book is for you for the struggles that we all go
- 1:49through. So let us crack open.
- 1:52Let us sit at the feet of the Koheleth and listen to him as he
- 1:56teaches and challenges and questions in the Wisdom of
- 2:01Solomon, reading together Ecclesiastes chapter one.
- 2:15These are the words of the Teacher, King David's son who
- 2:20ruled in Jerusalem. Everything is meaningless, says
- 2:25the teacher. Completely meaningless.
- 2:28What do people get for all their hard work under the sun?
- 2:32Generations come and generations go, but the earth never changes.
- 2:37The sun rises and the sunsets then hurries around to rise
- 2:41again. The wind blows South and then
- 2:44turns N around and around it goes, blowing in circles.
- 2:49Rivers run into the sea, but the sea is never full and the water
- 2:53returns again to the rivers and flows out again to the sea.
- 2:58Everything is wearisome beyond description.
- 3:02No matter how much we see, we are never satisfied.
- 3:06No matter how much we hear, we are not content.
- 3:10History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before.
- 3:15Nothing under the sun is truly new.
- 3:19Sometimes people say here is something new, but actually it
- 3:24is old. Nothing is ever truly new.
- 3:28If we don't remember what happened in the past and in
- 3:31future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.
- 3:35I, the Teacher, was King of Israel, and I lived in
- 3:40Jerusalem. I devoted myself to search for
- 3:43understanding and to explore by wisdom everything being done
- 3:48under heaven. I soon discovered that God has
- 3:52dealt a tragic existence to the human race.
- 3:55I observed everything going on under the sun and really it is
- 4:01all meaningless, like chasing the wind.
- 4:05What is wrong cannot be made right.
- 4:08What is missing cannot be recovered.
- 4:11I said to myself. Look, I am wiser than any of the
- 4:15kings who ruled in Jerusalem before me.
- 4:18I have greater wisdom and knowledge than any of them, so I
- 4:22set out to learn everything from wisdom to madness and folly.
- 4:27But I learned first hand that pursuing all this is like
- 4:33chasing the wind. The greater my wisdom, the
- 4:37greater my grief. To increase knowledge only
- 4:41increases sorrow. Lord, there is something really
- 4:56comforting in hearing that we are not the first people to
- 4:59grapple with these questions. Love that when we wake up in the
- 5:05morning and we think why? Why do I do this?
- 5:09What is the point? Does this make any difference?
- 5:14What is my life amounting to? Well, that is a question seeded
- 5:20at the heart of all of us. And thank you that we can come
- 5:25before you with these questions and that rather than trying to
- 5:31fill our heads with all truth and knowledge, you embrace us
- 5:37and you give us your spirit and let you companion with us
- 5:42through the ups and downs and challenges of our lives.
- 5:46Because you are a God who accompanies us every step of
- 5:52every day. So I thank you for that, and I
- 5:55thank you for giving us Jesus, in whose name we pray.
- 6:01Ah, man.
