- 0:04This is living. Waters of Grace, the teaching
- 0:07ministry of Lewis Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary
- 0:10Chapel of Westmoreland County in Greensburg, PA.
- 0:15Now here's Pastor Lewis as he continues teaching through God's
- 0:18Word. God gives grace to the humble,
- 0:39not the proud, not someone that says I'm going to just do what I
- 0:43want to do and live my life the way I want to live it.
- 0:46No, the Bible says that God resists the proud.
- 0:50He resists the proud, but he gives grace to the humble, to
- 0:56that one who will say yes, Lord, I blew it, I was wrong, I
- 1:00sinned, please forgive me. That grace is there for us.
- 1:05That's grace. Imagine what it's like to be in
- 1:07a relationship with someone who constantly betrays us, speaks
- 1:12negatively about us, and does so much more.
- 1:16Would we really choose to stay with someone who treats us that
- 1:19way? That's the difference between US
- 1:22and God. While we struggle to fully
- 1:25understand the depth of God's love for his creation, we can
- 1:29reflect on how he continues to love us unconditionally
- 1:33yesterday, today, and forever. So today, Pastor Lewis invites
- 1:39you to open your heart and let God into your life so you can
- 1:43experience his love. Now.
- 1:45Here's Pastor Lewis in the Book of Jude, chapter one with
- 1:48today's edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 1:52So if we go back to the third verse of Jude, it just simply
- 1:58says, Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you
- 2:02concerning our common salvation, I found it necessary to you
- 2:08exhorting you to contend earnestly for the faith which
- 2:15was once for all delivered to the Saints.
- 2:20So as we said last week that Jews sat down with his pen and
- 2:25paper and had the intention to write about our common
- 2:29salvation. Maybe we want to write about
- 2:32justification. Maybe he wanted to write about
- 2:34just the gospel itself. Maybe he wanted to share some
- 2:38truths about the gospel, about sanctification or some things of
- 2:42that nature, or just to rejoice and encourage his readers in the
- 2:47gospel, this common salvation that we have, which brings us
- 2:52and binds us all together. But instead, the Holy Spirit
- 2:56directed him to write concerning or exhorting them to contend
- 3:03earnestly for the faith. Now when we talk about
- 3:06contending for the faith, we're talking about this, this word
- 3:11that basically means to strive or to agonize for the faith.
- 3:18And not only just to contend for the faith, but to do it
- 3:21earnestly, to do it earnestly, to do it fervently, intensely,
- 3:27sincerely, to contend for the faith, which is what you and I
- 3:32should be doing every day. Every day we go into the Word of
- 3:34God and we read the Word of God and we fill ourselves with its
- 3:38truth. It gives us the strength, it
- 3:41gives us the the confidence in Jesus to stand on his word and
- 3:46to be able to contend for it. And we're not talking about
- 3:49quarreling and fighting with people over it.
- 3:51The Bible says that the man of God should not quarrel and
- 3:54should not strive, but we should stand for truth and not waver
- 4:00from the truth and not allow ourselves to be deceived by
- 4:05things that are not true concerning the Word of God.
- 4:10That we would not be deceived to add on to it or not be deceived
- 4:13to take away from it, but to take the Word of God the way
- 4:16it's given to us as it was given to the apostles through Jesus
- 4:21Christ. This is the truth, and we talked
- 4:25about that last week, but we did.
- 4:27We are to seriously and fervently strive, contend
- 4:33earnestly for this truth. So you might ask the question,
- 4:38well, why did he bring that up? Then why is God asking him to do
- 4:41this? And he tells us in verse four,
- 4:45he said because certain men have crept in unnoticed who long ago
- 4:51were marked out for this condemnation.
- 4:53Ungodly men who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and
- 4:59deny the only Lord God, God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 5:06I have it down here saying that creeps crept in, They crept in.
- 5:12So this crep in means that they came in subtly.
- 5:14They came in deceptively, came in through the side door to the
- 5:18back door. You know then, and what that
- 5:20means is that they didn't just come through the front door and
- 5:23say, you know what? I'm a false teacher and I'm
- 5:26about to destroy everything that God is trying to build in this
- 5:29place. They don't come in with that.
- 5:31They don't come in here saying that I have a doctrine that I'm
- 5:34going to bring in that's going to be totally contrary to
- 5:36everything you guys have been listening to.
- 5:39They don't come in that way either, but they come in subtly
- 5:42and deceptively. They actually come in looking
- 5:45and sounding like us. And as I go through this, I
- 5:50don't want this to be a, a, a, a word of condemnation against
- 5:54anybody. It's not that God is giving us
- 5:57these words so that we are warned, just like he gave it to
- 6:02them to warn them. These are tricks of the devil.
- 6:06These are deceptive ways of the evil 1 And unfortunately, he
- 6:11uses people. He uses people that sound like
- 6:14us, that look like us, that act like us, to try to deceive us,
- 6:19to try to get us to step away or to turn away from the truth.
- 6:23That's just the way the enemy is.
- 6:26And Jude is saying here that I want you to be aware of it.
- 6:30But Jude wasn't the only one who tried to warn us or who did warn
- 6:34us about this. Jesus warned us about it.
- 6:38He said back in, in, in, in Matthew 7 and 15.
- 6:41He said they're going to come in like wolves coming in wearing
- 6:44sheep's clothing. That sheep's clothing just
- 6:47simply mean that they're going to all look like sheep.
- 6:50We're all going to look like sheep together.
- 6:52We're sitting beside another person that looks like a sheep,
- 6:55but inwardly, inwardly they're wolves that has an intention to
- 7:01destroy what's being built here. Paul also talked to us and
- 7:07warned us in the book of Acts. In chapter 20.
- 7:11He said men were coming from among you.
- 7:14They're going to rise up from among you, not sparing the flock
- 7:20and speaking perverse things, perverse things, things that are
- 7:26totally perverted from the gospel truth.
- 7:29And then Peter in second Peter 2 and 1, he says false teachers
- 7:33will come in secretly bringing in destructive heresies,
- 7:37bringing in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord
- 7:42who bought them, denying the Lord Jesus Christ who bought
- 7:47them, bought them. Then it goes when he said that
- 7:53these are ungodly men who turn the grace of our Lord Jesus
- 7:58Christ into something lewdness, into something lewd, into
- 8:03something indecent, ungodly men. That means that these men really
- 8:08aren't even saved. Their ungodly, their thoughts
- 8:12are ungodly and impure. Their ways are ungodly, but they
- 8:15come in looking like us. Verse 19 says over in the later
- 8:21part of Jude, it says that they don't even have the Spirit.
- 8:24And of course, Paul himself said that if any man doesn't have the
- 8:27Spirit of God, that he's none of his.
- 8:29They turn the grace of our God into lewdness, into something
- 8:33immoral and decent. You know, grace is something
- 8:35that has been really misused and abused in the church,
- 8:40unfortunately. You know, grace is a wonderful
- 8:43thing. Jesus came full of grace and
- 8:46truth. It's a wonderful thing, but when
- 8:49you get someone who can pervert it or will pervert the enemy,
- 8:52will try to pervert anything, even the grace of our Lord and
- 8:56Savior Jesus Christ in this situation, because they are
- 9:01Gnostics and they believe that the body is evil.
- 9:06But the mind or the spirit, I'm sorry, is, is, is what's
- 9:09righteous. And that's the only thing that's
- 9:12important is the spirit. But your body, you can do
- 9:14anything you want to do with that, anything you want to do
- 9:18with the body, go and sin as much as you want.
- 9:20This is what they were convincing people.
- 9:22And of course, part of their worship was sexual immorality
- 9:27was, you know, sex, full sex, sex acts.
- 9:30That was part of the Pagan worship.
- 9:33So they were convincing the people, these false teachers
- 9:36will come in and convincing the people that it's OK not to use
- 9:39your body to do anything you want to do with it.
- 9:42Well, you know what stood out to me a couple weeks ago when Clark
- 9:45was teaching on on 1st Corinthians and he talked about
- 9:48the fact that our bodies are not our own.
- 9:52Our bodies are not our own and we're not to use the grace of
- 9:56God to try to cover up our sin. I just want to go back to Romans
- 10:01for a second. Romans chapter 5, Paul talks
- 10:06about this grace. He, he, he, he corrects this
- 10:09false thinking about this grace over in the book of Romans
- 10:15chapter chapter 5 and verse 20. He says, moreover, the law
- 10:18entered that the offense might abound, but where sin abound,
- 10:23grace abound much more. So that is so that as sin
- 10:30reigned in death, Even so grace might reign through
- 10:35righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- 10:39So now we're asking the question, So that means I can
- 10:42just sin then, because we got grace, that will abound anymore.
- 10:45And Paul answered that question, didn't he?
- 10:47Look at verse 1 of chapter 6. He says, what shall we say then?
- 10:53Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
- 10:59No, he says, certainly not. How shall we who die to sin live
- 11:05any longer in it? How should we who die to sin
- 11:09live any longer in it? In First Corinthians 619 and 20.
- 11:15Clark eloquently taught about this a couple weeks ago, where
- 11:18he says we are bought with a price.
- 11:20Our bodies are not ours to do anything we want to do with it.
- 11:23And I still remember the example he gave of the of a parking lot,
- 11:27you know, full of cars and they all got the keys in it.
- 11:31And you take somebody who just want to take something that
- 11:34doesn't belong to them and go out in the parking lot, choose
- 11:37the car that they want, go in, take the car, which is called
- 11:42stealing the car and drive it and do what they want to do with
- 11:46it. Because it's because it looks
- 11:47like a sports car. I'll drive it fast because it
- 11:49looks like a luxury car. I'll just lean in it so
- 11:51everybody can see me. Oh, come on, you guys remember
- 11:54to lean. You guys remember the lien, All
- 11:57right? But it's not my car.
- 12:04But I'll still take it to do what I want to do with it.
- 12:06And he talked about the fact that the police will come and
- 12:08they'll arrest them and ask the question, What made you think
- 12:11that you could take someone else's property and do what you
- 12:15want to do with it? What a good illustration of us
- 12:20with the Lord Jesus Christ. This body now belongs to him.
- 12:23He died on the cross for it. He purchased it with his own
- 12:29blood first. Peter 118 and 19.
- 12:33He says, you know, we weren't redeemed, you know, with, with
- 12:38with things like gold and silver, but we were redeemed
- 12:42with the precious blood of Jesus Christ.
- 12:47You can't put a price on that. There's no price we can put on
- 12:52that. But yet scripture says over here
- 12:56in Jude that they deny the only Lord God, they deny him and even
- 13:03over in second Peter and I want to take a look at that one too
- 13:06because it even talks about how they deny the Lord who bought
- 13:11them in second Peter. He says this.
- 13:14I got pages that are actually falling out of my Bible.
- 13:18It's time to get a new one. Second Peter chapter 2 and verse
- 13:22one, it says, but there we're also false prophets among the
- 13:26people, even as there will be false teachers among you who
- 13:30will secretly bring in destructive heresies and denying
- 13:35the Lord who bought them and will bring upon themselves swift
- 13:41destruction. You know, we have to really
- 13:44understand what it means that we now belong to Lord Jesus Christ.
- 13:51We now belong to Him. We are the slaves.
- 13:54Jude himself said I'm a bond slave, which actually means that
- 13:57I am a slave. I'm a bond servant.
- 13:59I'm a slave of Jesus Christ, a willing slave.
- 14:03We're not forced to be slaves to Jesus Christ.
- 14:06We are willing slaves. We give ourselves to Him, to be
- 14:10slaves to him. Lord, remember when I got saved
- 14:14and when I finally realized and looked back on my life and
- 14:18looked at how much time I wasted?
- 14:21I remember saying, Lord, I don't know how much time I got left.
- 14:25I've wasted so much of my life doing what I wanted to do, so
- 14:31much of my life looking for my own will, expressing my own will
- 14:38and not surrendering to His will.
- 14:41Lord, I don't know how much time I got left, but whatever I have,
- 14:46Lord, I want to give it to you. Whatever I have left, I want to
- 14:50commit it to you, submit it to you.
- 14:53And we're not perfect in this walk.
- 14:54We blow it. There's still times when I still
- 14:58do what I want to do. I've shared those with you
- 15:00before. But because of the Holy Spirit
- 15:03who's in us, we can be convicted of those things, and we turn our
- 15:11hearts and our minds back to Jesus Christ in repentance.
- 15:15Lord, I'm sorry I sinned once again.
- 15:19I blew it. Please forgive me.
- 15:21That's the grace that we have in Jesus Christ when we humble
- 15:26ourselves and admit our sin and confess our sin.
- 15:31He is gracious and He's good and He is faithful to forgive us of
- 15:37our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 15:40That's the grace that we have in Jesus Christ.
- 15:45God gives grace to the humble, not the proud, not someone that
- 15:50says I'm going to just do what I want to do and live my life the
- 15:53way I want to live it. No hit.
- 15:55The Bible says that God resists the proud.
- 15:59He resists the proud, but he gives grace to the humble, to
- 16:04that one who will say, yes, Lord, I blew it, I was wrong, I
- 16:08sinned, please forgive me. That grace is there for us.
- 16:13That's grace. That's grace.
- 16:17And then in verse 5, he goes on and he says, but I want to
- 16:21remind you that once you that that you know, they want to
- 16:24remind you though you once knew this and we talked before about
- 16:29how Peter even talked about always reminding, you know, we
- 16:33do. That's why we come here every
- 16:34every Sunday because we want to be reminded of what the word of
- 16:37God says, you know, and, and that's why I love coming to a
- 16:40church like this, because you guys come every Sunday and you
- 16:42bring your Bibles, which means that you intentionally come to
- 16:46hear the word of God and to read the word of God and to study the
- 16:49word of God, to understand the word of God intentionally.
- 16:54You do. And that's why you bring your
- 16:56Bibles. That's why you bring them.
- 17:00But this is remind you when, when, when Pastor Clark stands
- 17:03up here so many times and I hear him teaching the word of God, It
- 17:07reminds me of things I may have read a while ago and haven't
- 17:10read in a while. And I make a mental note to
- 17:13myself and I go back and I look at those things again because he
- 17:16reminded me. He reminded me.
- 17:20Or when you're in a study, a men's study in the morning, or
- 17:23you women in your women's study on your Bible class, you know,
- 17:25your Bible studies that you do the men's studies from time to
- 17:29time. You'll hear a scripture that
- 17:31maybe you haven't read in a long time and it reminds you and you
- 17:35go back and you read that Scripture again.
- 17:39But this is what Judah saying. Judah said.
- 17:41Look, I know that you know this. I'm not saying this to you
- 17:44because I don't think that you know it, but I'm saying it to
- 17:47you because I want to remind you.
- 17:48And when he's reminding them of his, as he said, though you once
- 17:52knew this, that the Lord having saved the people out of the land
- 17:57of Egypt. Now I want to go back here for a
- 17:58second. He's going to give 3 examples of
- 18:03those who through self will, pride, rejection of authority,
- 18:10rejection of God, have sinned. Cosmopostates, they sin, and
- 18:19because of their sin there was judgement.
- 18:22Sometimes it's really good to go back and see the historical
- 18:25record because the Old Testament does give us a good picture of
- 18:30the righteousness of God, a righteousness that we can't live
- 18:35up to ourselves, which is why Jesus came.
- 18:38But I'll get to that in a minute.
- 18:40But he says here, I'm going, he says my first example I'm going
- 18:43to use is going to be the people who God delivered.
- 18:48He saved them out of the land of Egypt.
- 18:52You guys know the story because of Joseph being, you know, sold
- 18:56by his brothers and he end up going into Egypt, ending up in
- 19:01Egypt and and when he ended up in Egypt because of God's favor,
- 19:05he ended up being like second in command in Egypt.
- 19:07I don't want to go through the go through the whole story.
- 19:09You guys know the story. But he end up being second in
- 19:11command because God's favor was upon him because he was a
- 19:14righteous man. But while he was there, after he
- 19:19died, the Bible says there arose a new Pharaoh who knew not
- 19:22Joseph. You know, there was a new boss
- 19:25in town and he didn't know anything about Joseph and didn't
- 19:27know anything about these people When and all of a sudden the
- 19:31people of Israel became a, a thorn in that guy on in on the
- 19:34new Pharaoh's side. And he oppressed them and he put
- 19:37them into slavery and he oppressed them for for many
- 19:41years, many, many years. And then he sent a deliverer.
- 19:47And it was Moses who he he sent, who delivered these people.
- 19:51He used to deliver the people from Egypt and, and, and he, but
- 19:54he delivered them all. This is the point of this
- 19:57example. He delivered them all, all of
- 20:00them. And they all went into the
- 20:03wilderness on their way going to the promised land.
- 20:06They all did. But while they were in the
- 20:09wilderness, he destroyed those who did not believe because of
- 20:14unbelief. They were judged and they were
- 20:17destroyed and because of their, and it came in a lot of
- 20:21different ways. It came in rejection, it came in
- 20:23rebellion, it came in sexual immorality, all kind of ways of
- 20:26just not trusting the those Caleb and and Joshua, when they
- 20:30went in to spy out the land. And when they went to spy out
- 20:33the land, they came back and gave a report and said, look, we
- 20:36can go in and take it. The other people that was there
- 20:38said no, we can't take it because they're too much for us.
- 20:42And because of their unbelief, they didn't go in.
- 20:47So the first generation of that group in Egypt, none of them
- 20:51went in besides Joshua and Caleb.
- 20:54It was their children who ended up going into the promised land.
- 20:58Their children. None of them went in because
- 21:01they were judged because of unbelief.
- 21:05Let's not have unbelief in our hearts to miss what it is God
- 21:11wants to do for us. Even as the the centurion said
- 21:16one day, he said, look, I believe, but help my unbelief.
- 21:20And we all have some areas of unbelief, if we're honest with
- 21:24ourselves. And you find out those areas of
- 21:28unbelief whenever adversity hits US and it hits US hard sometimes
- 21:33and it's hard for us to believe that God will pull us out of
- 21:36this or even can pull us out of this like, oh, I'm doomed.
- 21:40This is not going to end right? And we take our eyes off of him
- 21:45and we started looking at people who can help me with this.
- 21:48What can I do for myself to pull myself out of this?
- 21:52Let's not be caught in unbelief. And then the next example he
- 21:57uses, he uses the example of the angels.
- 22:01And he said then the angels who did not keep their proper domain
- 22:05but left their own abode. He has reserved an everlasting
- 22:09chains under darkness. So you went from the children of
- 22:14Israel to now he and, and how they were judged because of
- 22:18their unbelief. And now he goes to the angels,
- 22:21these angels and, and, and what we have to understand is that
- 22:25angels have free will. Angels have free will and, and
- 22:29Satan himself have free will and he chose to rebel against God,
- 22:37to rebelled against God. And because of that, he and the
- 22:40angels who rebelled with him, which was 1/3 the Bible tells us
- 22:45we're cast out of heaven. We're cast out of heaven.
- 22:49They decided that they wanted their will and not God's will.
- 22:53They wanted to do what they wanted to do and not do what God
- 22:56wanted them to do. Oh, they had a proper domain.
- 22:59They had a place in heaven. They were there, but they turned
- 23:05away from them, turned away from God to follow their own will, to
- 23:11follow their own heart. And the Bible says as a result
- 23:14of that, He now has done reserved in everlasting chains
- 23:19under darkness for the judgment of the great day.
- 23:23Just think about that. Because they were looking to
- 23:28have a life of freedom to do what they wanted to do, to live
- 23:32their own free will and not surrender to the will of God.
- 23:36They still end up in bondage. They still don't have any
- 23:39freedom. They're in the darkness chain
- 23:44darkness because of their decisions to live their own life
- 23:49the way they want to live it. But you know what?
- 23:51That's no different than what we have and where we are.
- 23:57You've been listening to Living Waters of Grace with Pastor
- 24:00Lewis Harrell at Calvary Chapel Westmoreland in Greensburg, PA.
- 24:06As Pastor Lewis continues to preach through the book of Jude,
- 24:10he wants you to realize that you can't be a part time Christian.
- 24:14If you're going to follow Jesus, he is going to ask for your
- 24:17undivided loyalty. If you try to serve your own
- 24:21interests while following Jesus, you find that you can't do
- 24:25either one successfully. But if you run after Jesus with
- 24:29everything you have, you'll be amazed at how He provides for
- 24:34you and sustains you on the journey, even when you have no
- 24:38idea of where your provision will come from.
