- 0:27Hey everybody. Good morning from the chicken
- 0:29coop. So let's talk about bus drivers
- 0:32that we don't want. Let's talk about giving
- 0:36attention to emotions that you don't want to have.
- 0:40Yeah, and apparently Dottie has a lot to say about this
- 0:42conversation this morning because she's right in my face
- 0:45talking to me about it. So what does this look like in
- 0:49in real world scenarios, situations?
- 0:53We all have emotions that we know we don't like.
- 0:56We all know we do it. We all have that anxiety.
- 0:59We all have frustration, we all have irritation.
- 1:03We all have emotions that we don't want to have.
- 1:06And we talk about them. I know because my clients talk
- 1:09to me about them all the time. But we'll often hear people say,
- 1:13myself included, I don't want to feel this way.
- 1:16I don't want to feel this way. So there's there's the logic
- 1:20that says, well, then don't feel this way.
- 1:22And then there is the reality of, well, I don't know how to
- 1:25not feel this way. Well, part of this, although
- 1:28this sounds very simplistic, is we are giving attention to
- 1:32emotions that we don't want to have.
- 1:34We're putting our directive on it.
- 1:36We're obsessing on it. So let's use anxiety because
- 1:40this is a very common subject for most people and this is
- 1:43where it shows up. We are giving attention to the
- 1:46anxiety over and over and over again.
- 1:48So we're like, I'm anxious, I'm anxious, I'm anxious, I feel
- 1:51anxious. I'm pretty sure I'm anxious.
- 1:52I'm anxious. I feel sick to my stomach, my
- 1:54hands are sweating, I'm anxious. I'm going to get a car.
- 1:57I don't like to drive in the car.
- 1:58That makes me anxious. I'm going to go into work.
- 1:59I'm going to talk to my boss and Oh my God, he makes me so
- 2:01anxious. We use the language of whatever
- 2:06that emotion might be over and over and over to the point where
- 2:10it is our driven reality and it's in front of us.
- 2:13It's constant. So if you've, if you're new to
- 2:16the podcast and you haven't heard me talk about the bus
- 2:19drivers before, this is my theory of teaching people this
- 2:23is that, you know, emotions are like bus drivers and they,
- 2:26whoever's driving the bus predicates your entire
- 2:28experience. We all know when we were kids,
- 2:30if we went rode on a bus, whoever the bus driver you had,
- 2:33you always wished for a certain bus driver.
- 2:34I always wished for Chuck because he was such an awesome
- 2:37bus driver and he was always had music and he was so nice to
- 2:40everybody, yet he was stern and nobody got picked on on his bus.
- 2:43So I liked having him as a bus driver.
- 2:46So I didn't want to ride on anybody else's bus.
- 2:49I, I couldn't wait to see that he was my bus driver every year.
- 2:53And I'll never forget when I came up with this theory of like
- 2:57the emotions driving. I'm like, well, so why do we, if
- 3:00we wish for a certain bus driver, why do we then focus on
- 3:03the ones that don't serve us well?
- 3:05It's habit. It's the fact that we don't
- 3:09allow ourselves to be in the present moment.
- 3:11We spend so much time looking backwards and looking forwards
- 3:14that we're not in the present moment.
- 3:16And it's part of the reason why I like being in the chicken coop
- 3:18so much, because you have to be in the present moment.
- 3:21When I'm out here doing this, This is why I do it here,
- 3:23because you have to be in the present moment.
- 3:25You're paying attention. They're not thinking about other
- 3:27things, they're just doing their things.
- 3:29They get into a squabble with each other two seconds later,
- 3:32it's like it never even happened.
- 3:33They don't hold grudges, they just move on.
- 3:35They live in the present moment. The creatures that they are just
- 3:38dictating that and are, can they be trained?
- 3:41Sure, just like we can be trained, but they don't hang on
- 3:44to the stuff that is, is necessarily the, the stuff that
- 3:49will eat them up inside. In fact, you'll see there might
- 3:52be 1 bird that's very mean to the other birds and all of a
- 3:55sudden they just like they'll forget about it and they'll just
- 3:57move on. It's, it's amazing how quickly
- 4:00they will move past things and that's what I love about them.
- 4:03But anyway, I digress. Let's get back to this.
- 4:05So here we are dealing with these emotions that we know we
- 4:11don't want to have. We know we don't want to have
- 4:14them, yet we constantly give them attention.
- 4:17If this was a child, we'd say we can't give attention to the
- 4:21behavior we don't want. We know the rules organically.
- 4:24We know the rules, but we don't follow them for ourselves.
- 4:27And the very simplistic way to think about this is the bus
- 4:31driver switching out the driver. Let me put a different driver.
- 4:34And well, then anxiety seems to come right back.
- 4:36People will say to me, Kim, it's back again.
- 4:38OK, yes, it's going to take time to shift it.
- 4:41It's going to take time. But the basic, simple boil the
- 4:45ocean down thing is, if you're giving attention to an emotion
- 4:49that you don't want, it will keep driving you.
- 4:53So you have to stop giving it attention.
- 4:56Say no thank you, I choose not to give you attention right now.
- 4:59Nope, we're not doing that right now.
- 5:00You're not going to drive and put a different driver in and
- 5:03then come back and say 2 minutes later it might be back again.
- 5:06Oh no, you're not the best driver for this.
- 5:09But just boil it down to those simple facts of when I give
- 5:13attention to something that I don't want, it expands.
- 5:18It can't not. That's just universal energy and
- 5:23the language of, of science. When you give attention to
- 5:26things that that you don't want or give attention to anything,
- 5:29whether you want it or you don't want it, it expands.
- 5:32So give attention to the things that you do want.
- 5:34Give attention to happiness. Focus on happy, focus on light
- 5:39side emotions. Don't focus on the dark side
- 5:42emotions. It's going to be a process my
- 5:45friends, but I know you can do it.
- 5:47Focus on what you want, not what you don't want.
- 5:51Give attention to the emotions that make you feel better as
- 5:55opposed to the emotions that don't make you feel better.
- 5:58And I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
