- Rachel K: It's day 94 of the Travel Agency In A Year podcast. I'm your host Rachel Kay, and we are gonna do some life-changing writing. You're like, what? I just wanna listen to this while I'm driving. I don't care. Let me come back and listen to it again. This is mine from 2021 goals. You can't see that. I'm not gonna show you the embarrassing list I made. because this is like, hi everybody, here's my diary for middle school. Now I'm not sharing you all this. I'll share some of it though. ⁓ Man, there's a lot of these. So I did this like one on a page. Here's page two. You can't see it. I don't want you to see it. I don't want you zooming in. Page three. Page four. Five. You're gonna need pages. a legal pad is what I'm saying. ⁓ my gosh. Here we go. ⁓ that one I still, I just gave that dress away. All right, so this is from Steve Harvey, like a, I don't even remember. I just know that I remember him saying to do this. And I was like, I'm gonna do this. You will need about seven or eight pages of paper. I prefer you would have it in a notebook or a legal pad of some sort. And. you need to line it. So I did line 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. I got 28 to a page on this. 2, 300. So set aside about 2 hours, maybe 4. No distractions. Ask someone, your spouse or your parents, like can you watch the kids for a little bit? I need this. It works, by the way, which is why I'm telling you about this, because it's like mind blowing. And I'm pretty sure I've told people about this either in one of my course lessons or maybe a webinar or an email. I will tell you about this all day long. Just try it. And I'll explain the neuroscience-y part of it in layman's terms. I am not a doctor. ⁓ You're going to write down 300 things. I believe this episode will air April 3rd if I'm correct. April 2nd. So you can write at the top. I have on top of every single page in one year I will dot dot dot. So you could write one year from April or like on April 2nd, 2027. I will dot dot dot. Now I did not accomplish. all 300 things. But you're, you think you can come up with 300 things. This is, this is who you want to be, what you want to have in your life, how you want your life to look like, like dream life. One of mine was like, be able to walk in high heels. I still can't walk in high heels. I'm already tall enough. I don't need heels. I can do like kitten heels, but like stilettos, no. I will fall over. ⁓ I have so many crazy dreams on here. So anyway, it's gonna take you at least two hours to write down. Here's a silly one. Here we ⁓ man, there's some of them on here that I would never do now. I would not care about. Have a pergola. I would like to have one of those still someday. ⁓ Take the Route 66 road trip. I'm not really concerned about that. I think I was running out of ideas because I'm about 250 right now. ⁓ ⁓ I've always wanted a Swedish Valend as a dog. I was like, that'll be my next dog, except I don't want to buy from breeders and spend a bunch of money when there's all these poor puppies that need to be adopted. ⁓ my gosh, I've got some crazy dreams on here. Literally anything. ⁓ 300 things. Let's see, I'm trying to think of one. Anyway, once you get to your 300, ⁓ here's one, have a virtual assistant. Did it. Have three sub-agents working for my agency. Did that. Spend at least four weeks in the Caribbean over the course of year. Did that. Have a day bed slash couch in my office. Did that. Have at least 10 houseplants. I have 70 now. I do have my perfect shade of lipstick. I never wear it though. ⁓ man, this is like way back. I had a goal of six weddings in 2021 and I had. ⁓ I have no idea how many I ended up with in 21. That was so long ago. Wow, anyway, write down 300 different things. I just mentioned a random few. It's going to get really hard after about 75. And you're gonna have to really think. So I'm trying to get past 75 to get... ⁓ I've done some of these things since then that I forgot about. ⁓ here it is. Be able to walk gracefully in high heels. That ain't never happened. I'm a baby giraffe who had too much to drink. When I'm in heels... ⁓ ⁓ I do have new bed sheets. Like that's another thing on here. Like it doesn't have to be amazing crazy things. It can just be like, want this. Wow. So you got to get all the way to 300. And it can be. have amazing health. Nope. Don't have that. Here, I mentioned yesterday like how you might think of being rich as like always flying first class or private. Like that was one of my things. Now I don't care. Excuse me. So many things. One of them, be motivated to do everything on this list. Like you can... do it. Just get 300 things. Now, when you go through this list, I want you every morning, so yesterday I mentioned every morning read that description of future you, right? With this one, you also want to read all 300 of these things aloud. I'm saying you need to read both of these aloud and you need to write them down because you will remember them. You're doing this for memory purposes. So if your thing, let me find one that's not horribly embarrassing. Here, meditate every day. If one of your 300 things is meditate every day as you're reading this list out loud, hearing yourself, seeing the words on the paper that you wrote down so you remember writing it. and you're thinking about the words all at the same time that really really helps with your memory and so something like meditate every single day in a year I'm to be doing that on a day that's a daily practice so your brain's like okay how are we going to meditate every single day And your brain's going to want to fight it a little bit and be like, ⁓ we have so much to do. But then your brain might be like, ⁓ you have five minutes. Why don't you meditate? Like, you get some downtime. You're like, OK, I don't have to pick up the kids yet or whatever. Your brain's going to go to. Why don't you meditate? Why don't you open up some meditation thing and do five minutes of that? Because you're telling it that you want to. And so your brain is serving you with every single thought. And if you fill it with, is who I want to be, this is who I am, this is what I do every day, your brain's going to be like, well, you're not doing that. How can we make this happen? Yeah, I don't want to read these out loud, also I kind of do. And I thought I had 20, 22 on the same notepad. Here it is, 2022 goals. All right, as you achieve them, cross them off. So in 2021, I was reading this every single day for one full year, and I believe I accomplished 100 out of 300 things. I believe I did. 2022. ⁓ so many things that I used to care about over here. So what I did for 2022 is I reevaluated my 21 list and anything that I hadn't accomplished yet, I was like, do I really want that now? Because clearly I wasn't focusing on that this year. Didn't make it happen. And then I would put it on the next year's list if I wanted to do it. And then I would have to add to the list. And it's crazy how how much has actually happened without even thinking about it. Anyway, it works is what I'm telling you. You're like, shut up. Reading your old notebooks podcast episode. Because again, you're telling your brain first when you write it down, and I've said this in other episodes, when you write it down, pen to paper, not stylus to tablet, not typing it out, not voice notes, writing it pen to paper. Your brain commits it to memory and it becomes more important. If you do it the other ways, it's not important to you. It's not as important. But then, reading it out loud every single day, like your future you, rich you, rich Rachel, when you're reading that every single day, your brain's gonna be like, okay, well, if you walk every single day, why don't we go for a walk right now? And then if your list of 300 things you're gonna do in a year is like, oh, you're gonna own 10 houseplants? Okay. So I will tell you, it seemed impossible when I started that list. And I switched to outside agents in 2020, like end of 2020. I was phasing out with my other agency. I was buh-roke. because there were no jobs where I lived. They're like, ⁓ you want to manage all the events and do the events planning at this hotel? $13 an hour with a 45 minute one-way commute. I was like, are you kidding me? anyway, and I was taking a big risk building this all up. And I would read that every day. And I really remember the blessings from the item where I put have 10 houseplants. I had zero houseplants when I started in 2021 and I was like I can't afford it and I still had like low self-esteem and some self-worth issues. I was like, oh I can't buy that $2 dying houseplant at the store or whatever. So I started off with like pineapple heads and I had one pineapple head and then I remember on Facebook marketplace This woman had a fiddle leaf fig, which I remember seeing that plant on CBS Sunday morning. They did a special about like the rarity of it. Now it's like everywhere, but this is like 2007. And I ⁓ was like, man, that's a beautiful plant. I want that. I want one in my house someday. And this lady in a Facebook like plant swap group. She wanted to sell five fiddle leaf figs that were essentially sticks maybe this big. And she's like, I can't take care of them. They're dying. And they were all in one terracotta pot. And I got it for $10. So I was like, ooh, five more. But then two of them were dead. So those three fiddle leaf figs have now turned into 11 fiddle leaf figs in my house. A lot of my other plants were just like babies from my friend's house plants. And I think by the end of 2021, I had 12 house plants. And I was like, yes, I did it. But even like little things like that is what I'm saying. I wanted 18 groups. That's what it is. I wanted 18 groups, but not all of them to be weddings in 2021. And I know I hit that goal, but they were not the exact type of groups. But I was like, whatever 18 groups it is. I did get to spend more time in the Caribbean and Mexico than I had nothing. I was starting essentially from scratch because I remember my ex couldn't, sorry, I'm getting a little personal. He kissed me like, shut up, I don't want to hear this. My ex told me I had to go get a quote unquote real job because he didn't make enough money to pay the mortgage that was only in his name that he got before he met me. And I was like, nah, dog. And in, that's, I was just like, no dog, not doing that. ⁓ There was a lot of doubt in my ability to even be a travel advisor back then, even though I'd already been one, but like to go all in on it instead of being a butler. And then I had quite a bit of money stocked away in my IRA and to make ends meet. I had to, when Biden announced, can withdraw from your IRA without penalty, I withdrew all of it to keep him off my back, to pursue my dream, and to fund my business. And that kept us afloat for like the next year. Also, unemployment, by the way. was a nightmare if you had a job back then in the state of Missouri. They like lost my unemployment application because it was COVID. And even though I was in a completely different part of the state and county from my son, ⁓ he called me up and he's like, Mom, I got an unemployment office agent who said you can call her, call him in Springfield. And this is his email because I had filed that I had been like trying to submit stuff and all of a sudden like that I was looking for work and all of sudden I couldn't get in. I was like, ⁓ okay. And it was because everyone had lost their job or so many people did or they were furloughed and had to file for unemployment. And I didn't get it until probably three or four months later. So that was another thing. It was like hairy AF. because apparently the person I was living with didn't understand how to have a savings account. So it kind of all was put on me. And so all of this seemed unbelievable. And I did get teased for reading that out loud every day. And how dare you think anything can happen? So just know, if you're in not the best place and not around the best people or supportive people, know that it's still possible. Okay? So that was a weird episode. I kind of got vulnerable with you guys. It was weird. Weird. I might not make another episode. I'm done. No more travel agency in year. Too much. You know too much about me. Okay, I hope that was helpful. do recommend setting aside some time this weekend if you can. It is the Easter holiday. Did you set your email reminders to be like, hey, we're closed for Easter holiday. What's that looking like? Too late. It's like the second or third of April, ⁓ but it is a holiday weekend, so I'm not sure if it's Passover. I'm sorry. But, Hopefully you can find two or three hours to just chill and dream as big as possible and as detailed as possible. And let's focus on getting you there, okay? Have a good day.
