A young swimmer in his early twenties drowned in the river near Canterbury on Wednesday afternoon, sparking a massive, multi-agency rescue effort. Emergency crews from Boscawen, Canterbury, and Concord, along with boats from the Merrimack Street Boat Ramp and support from Marine Patrol and Fish and Game, combed the area near the Hannah Duston Memorial and a sandbar amid strong currents.
