Transcript
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: What if the greatest question in life was not what do you think?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Or not what I think.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Not what the culture around us thinks.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: What if the greatest question in life is did God really speak?
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Because if God has spoken, then his word should settle everything that is true, should negate anything that is false.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: It should tell us who he is, who we are, how to be saved, how to respond, how we should live.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Today I want to begin a series dealing with the 18 Articles of Faith.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: But I wanted to make sure that the folks who are still here, and I want to thank all those that have uh started to join in in our podcast, um uh I think a hundred and um twenty seven countries now around the world.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: Um I I don't know how many cities, uh hundreds of cities.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: I want to thank you to all the folks who join in with us, but I wanted to make sure that you're you're here with us, and if you're still here, then you're wanting more, and I want to give you more.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: And I want to look at these articles of faith together.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: There's 18 of them, and I assume uh right now that we'll be going through 18 episodes of these.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: We may combine some along the way, but uh it all needs to start with the word of God, and that is where the first article of faith starts, and let me list these for you at the beginning.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I won't do this every single time, uh, as it you know may get redundant after a while.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh I want to give you all 18 of them, and that way we can kind of move forward.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: Number one is the Holy Scripture, number two, the one true God, the Trinity, the Lord Jesus Christ, number five is the Holy Spirit.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Uh, number six, creation of the fall of man, sin, salvation by grace.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Number ten is repentance and faith, then justification, sanctification, the security of the believer, the church.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Number fifteen is baptism and the Lord's Supper.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And then the last three, evangelism and missions, the return of Christ, and the eternal state, heaven and hell.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: Now, those eighteen we want to look at in the coming days, coming weeks uh together.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: It'll probably take us uh maybe nearly uh three weeks or more, or you know, almost a month of uh of episodes to get through these.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: So I want to I want to deal with this uh in that order.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: So the first one I'll deal with is looking at is looking at the Word of God, the Holy Scripture.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And when we start talking about articles of faith, there's there's no place foundationally, really, in church and in our Christian walk, there's no place that we need to start other than the Word of God.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Because if we don't agree or settle the matter of what Scripture is, then we have no solid ground to stand on for anything else that we believe.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: Then it just becomes a free-for-all.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: And that's what the world is trying to teach our kids today, and trying to teach our churchgoers, is that there is a there is an individual truth, that whatever your truth is is what matters.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And that's just not the case because every doctrine, every belief, every every system rises and falls with the simple thought that has God spoken?
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Did God speak when when the Bible was written?
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: Is what Peter says, is that true that that the Bible was written not just by learned men, but by holy men who was moved as the Holy Spirit spake to them and commanded them to write these things down.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Is that is that true?
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, if you don't believe that God spoke, that the word of God is truly his word, then we really have nothing else to discuss in the next seventeen articles, because the rest of them it's it's a house of cards at that point.
- 4:12SPEAKER_00: But if you believe that God has spoken, and if it's the only truly religious book written, then sermons are not just opinions if they're tra if they're taken from scripture.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: Um Bible doctrine is no longer debatable.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Because God, everything that that we need is is in there is in the Word of God.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Conviction is no longer preference.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: The word of God, if true, carries the authority that no man can overrule, no culture can rewrite, or no generation can improve upon it.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: I just heard a young lady the other day, uh, I didn't hear her, I was I was talking to her family.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: She's uh in uh college right now, she's in university, uh smart young lady raised in a Christian home, a godly home.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: But now all of a sudden she's starting to believe that the word of God changes as time changes.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: This is what they're pushing out of Christian.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: This is a Christian college, a Christian-based college, university.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: And this is what they're pushing out, that the word of God changes over time.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: There's no generation that can that can change the word of God.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: This is going to be a foundational truth, a foundational article of our faith, a pillar, a tent pole, however you want to describe it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: This is why doctrine, all doctrine, all theology must begin with the word of God.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: We don't begin with church tradition or reason or experience or popular thought, and there are so many religions out there that will begin with those things.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: It will begin with some experience that you've had, some sign or wonder that we have.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: That's not where it's, it starts with the word of God.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: There's two things at the bedrock of every Christian home, every Christian life, Christian home and church, and that is prayer and the word of God.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And they both need to be equally important.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: I would almost say that prayer is more important because there's people out there who don't have a copy of God's word.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Maybe they have a portion of it, maybe they've heard it, maybe they've heard a verse or two, but then they pray.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: But there's people out there who have the word of God sitting on their shelf with no prayer life, and they go nowhere.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: So you can all you can see why I would say that prayer is almost more important than having the word of God.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: But the Bible is got to be a foundational article in our life because of the authority that it carries with it.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: The Bible says in 2 Timothy 3, verses 16 to 17, it says, All scripture is given by the inspiration of God is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction and righteousness, that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly uh uh uh thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: It does not say thoroughly, thoroughly is a very important word in that um in that verse.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: But thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: Now when it says that the word of God may be perfect, that the man of God may be perfect, that's not saying that we're trying to, that we we can live in perfection if we uh you know read the Bible.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: We're never going to be perfect, but we can be perfect in in Christ, if that, if that, if I may say that.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: We're perfect in Christ, it will his righteousness be imputed upon us.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: But it starts with the word of God.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And that's the inspiration for God's word.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: And we've done lessons on this, and we've got an online uh lesson on our uh sermon audio, and it's it's everything is on sermon audio that we put on sermon audio is on YouTube and it's on Facebook just by the way of our editing system.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: So if you have a preferred means of social media, you can find it on there.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: But sermon audio is the page we try to direct everybody to because it has everything organized uh in uh series, and but you can go on and look for our KJV series, the King James Word of God, the authority of it, why it is, and you can go on and you can look at the the lesson we did on inspiration and then uh preservation.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: Uh we believe that the Word of God was inspired by the Spirit.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Matter of fact, it's in uh 2 Peter uh chapter number one, verse 20 and 21.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: It says, knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: It means you can't just make it what you want it to mean.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: It may affect you differently, but you can't make it what you want it to mean.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man, but by holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: So that's the inspiration, and then we believe in the uh the preservation of God's word, that he preserved it down through time to where we have it today.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Now, I know there's a big discussion out there and big debate on you know which Bible is the correct Bible.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: Again, I refer you back to our KJV series where we look at why there are different versions of the Bible, where did they come from?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Is any Bible okay to read?
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Quick answer, no.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Now, am I gonna you know thump you on the head and you know annex you away from me and uh those things because you have a different version of the Bible in your hand?
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: No.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna I'm gonna strongly encourage you to maybe steer you away from that because of some of the things that uh is wrong with that.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: But um, but no, I I'm I'm not I'm not so much so that uh you know I'm gonna slam the door in your face.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: But I want to encourage you to strongly look at the manuscripts that are behind uh those versions.
- 9:44SPEAKER_00: But this inspiration and preservation is where the word of God comes from.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: And so because it is inspired and because it is preserved, that means it is authoritative.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: If God is the source of his word, then scripture speaks with the authority.
- 10:03SPEAKER_00: And it does not need permission.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: It's the final court of appeal, and there's no consideration or other truth of submission that can be brought before it.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: When the Bible speaks about salvation or holiness or judgment or marriage or church or uh or eternity, the character of man or good morals, we don't sit and try to figure out what we need to do.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: The Bible has already said in judgment of those things.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: And it's us who need to conform to that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: David wrote in Psalm 119, the word is a lamp into my feet and a light into my path.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: It leads us, it will guide us everywhere we need to go.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And it it's a benefit to us.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: And because of that inspiration, because of that preservation, because of that authoritative uh nature of scripture, then, then the Bible becomes sufficient.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: What else do we need?
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: You know, there are there are millions and millions of self-help books sold every year.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Every year.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And people are looking for every way in the world to try to help them out of some situation, whether it's a uh uh relational problems, whether it's spiritual problems, financial problems, people are looking for so many ways.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: And and I understand that we need to seek out help.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: The Bible does tell us to seek out wise counsel.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So I don't have a problem with self-help books.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: I write books.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: I've got books, I got plenty, I've got plenty of books for sale.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Most of them are commentaries, but I do have topical type help books.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: You know, uh one of them is um I've I've just got saved.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: Now what?
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: What do you do next?
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And it's all scriptural based, but it just kind of puts it all in one place.
- 11:49SPEAKER_00: So somebody who doesn't understand, who wasn't raised in church, well, what do I do next when I get saved?
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Am I supposed to do something?
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: Am I supposed to have some kind of experience or whatever?
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: I'm writing one right now.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: It's a three-book series called Enough.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: When you've had enough, when you realize you aren't enough, and when you know that God is enough.
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: I'm excited about that series to come out.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: So I don't have a problem with self-help books, but it's not self-help.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: It should be help that's pointing you back to scripture.
- 12:19SPEAKER_00: And that's where the main thing, that's where we gotta start.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: If you're having financial trouble, don't start with the you know the business index.
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: Start with the word of God, it can help you financially.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: The sufficiency of the scriptures is what will fully equip us.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: That we just read in 2 Timothy that uh the man of God may be perfect and thoroughly furnished into all good works.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: That's everything that we need can be found right in the scripture.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: And speaking of the series enough, the Bible is enough.
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: The word of God is enough.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: It's everything that we need in our life.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: So not only is it inspired and preserved and authoritative and now sufficient, but now because of that, it becomes a very powerful tool.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: The Hebrews, the writer of Hebrews, I believe it'd be Paul, said for the word of God is quick and powerful and sharpen than any two-edged sword, piercing even into the dividing asunder of the soul and spirit, and of the joints and the marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of the heart.
- 13:31SPEAKER_00: What in the world does that mean?
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: That's a that's a mouthful, preach.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: What does it mean?
- 13:34SPEAKER_00: Let me just tell you exactly what it means.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: The Bible's not dead.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Every page of the Word of God is alive.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: It's quick.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: That's what it means.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: It's alive.
- 13:42SPEAKER_00: This is a living organism.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: And when the Word of God is read in spirit and truth, I mean, if you just if you just you know plop your Bible down, you're gonna read it like the morning paper, you know, let me just get into my Bible reading done, you're you're gonna be reading it in vain.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: But when you when you read it with the spirit of of God, show me, direct me, guide me, there's power just in the reading of the Word of God.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: There's a threefold promise in uh um the book of Revelation.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: Actually, there's a couple of threefold promises in the book of Revelation, but one of them is to hear it read, and to read it or to rehearse it, to to do it over and over again.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: That that's a I mean, just to read it is a powerful tool to have in your hand.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, it cuts through every excuse, it exposes every sin, it reveals every motive, it brings our our our conscious mind to to to life.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: It it it it it causes us to kind of wake up and see the things around us, it brings comfort, it it helps build our faith, it strengthens uh our hearts when we're when we're down, when we're when we're uh under trials and tribulation.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: Have you ever been in a in a church service, Lord?
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: I pray you have.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Have you ever been in one that you just you sit there and you felt like while the preacher was preaching that there was nobody else that he was preaching directly to you, that the whole sermon was organized just for you?
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Well, first off, as as a as a as a pastor, let me say this.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: Uh a lot of times that's the case.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: If you're sitting there saying, Man, this one's just for me today, that's exactly what it was.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: Exactly just for you.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: God arranged everything just for you.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: That's how God works, that's how his word works.
- 15:35SPEAKER_00: So it brings us comfort, it it it'll correct us when we're wandering, it'll it'll shine in in the dark places in life.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: God uses this book that that many people just leave sitting on their shelf gathering dust, he uses this like no other book can be used.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: No other speech, no other political jargon can do what the word of God can do.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: So then, if that's the case, if it's truly inspired and preserved, if it's authoritative, if it's sufficient and powerful, those are some big words, then why do people reject it?
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Why do so many people reject the word of God?
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: I I think the main reason is because it number one, it confronts them.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: It confronts the sinner life, exactly the verse we just read, because it cuts and it starts separating things out.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: It calls us sinners.
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: And people don't like that.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: I remember getting back during COVID whenever the online stuff, we really weren't doing online services until COVID.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And uh we were doing our online services there.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: We did it for one month, and finally we were like, this is ridiculous.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: We're having church.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: If you want to come, you come, but we're we're done with this what we call pajama church.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: Everybody sitting at home in their pajamas.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: So uh we got back to having church.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: Um we the March the uh 13th was when everything shut down.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: I think that was a Saturday, and um we had service again by like April uh 20th or something like that.
- 17:17SPEAKER_00: It was the week before Mother's Day was our first service back, I think it was roughly.
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: And um I remember we had somebody you know comment back to one of the services we had, and it was just me and my dad in the in the whole place.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but we had well we had uh we had some of our singers go down to church one at a time because nobody knew what was going on with COVID.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: I mean, we were just trying to do the best we could with what information we had, looking back on it now, it's so ridiculously stupid.
- 17:46SPEAKER_00: Which I thought I thought a lot of it was stupid then as well, but you know, we were trying to be you know at wise with what information we had.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: So our singers went down to church, and my brother he can control all the sound and stuff from his computer at home.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: So they'd go down, they they would sing.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: So he'd record them, they would sing, and they would all, you know, they would sing, you know, four or five songs while they were there.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: And so then whenever my brother would post these, he would edit together to where it would have me up making announcements, and then it would have the singer singing, and then it would have me or my dad up preaching.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And so it looked like we were all there at church together because they would walk off, and as they were walking on, he would splice it together where I was walking onto the stage, and this lady writes in, she was uh I think she's out of Ohio, and she writes in um and tells us we're the reason why people are dying because we have people in the church together, and you know, we're just we're not taking it very seriously and all those things.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: Well, it just so happens that day I was preaching on um uh, you know, us we're sinners, you know, we're all sinners saved by grace.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: And um, and then she said, on top of that, I can't believe that you would just sit there and call all the people in your church sinners.
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, I didn't do that.
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: I'm sorry that that that bothers you, but I didn't I didn't call them.
- 18:55SPEAKER_00: I'm just telling you what Paul wrote many times throughout the book of Romans and and many of his other other epistles and letters.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: People don't like it because they're confronted and they're held accountable to their actions, and that's what people don't want today.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: They don't want to be held accountable.
- 19:11SPEAKER_00: They want to be able to live their life and do what they want to do without anybody telling them what to do.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: And it's becoming so evident in men, and I can speak as a man because I am one.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: But it's become so evident in men today that men do not want to humble themselves to an almighty God and to his word.
- 19:31SPEAKER_00: They want to be a man and have all the answers and have everything.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: You know, I I don't need anybody else's help as a as a first way to find yourself flat on your face.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Because we don't want to submit to it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: It offends people, it offends our pride.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: And this is why people will reject the word of God just because of these things.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Because it wants to tell you how you need to live.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: And there's not one, and what's so what's so frustrating to try to get people to understand, and it's so frustrating that people don't understand it.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: It's not like the Bible is telling us anything hard.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: Everything in the in scripture that that that it either recommends or commands us to do, we're commanded to love one another.
- 20:17SPEAKER_00: We're commanded to have our you know the Lord's Supper and to baptism in our churches.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: That's our two ordinances.
- 20:22SPEAKER_00: We're commanded to love one another, to forgive.
- 20:24SPEAKER_00: These things that the Bible is telling us to do, these are things that make us better.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: There's not one thing that the Bible commands us to do or encourages us to do that won't make our life better.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: And yet people still reject it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: They still will reject it.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: And it's it's the it's the most insane thing.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: That's like going to your bank and your bank's saying, you know, well, you know, I wouldn't spend all your money on, you know, the candy shop.
- 20:48SPEAKER_00: You know, don't go down and spend every dime you have buying, you know, gumballs and lollipops.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: And you're saying, yeah, right, I'm gonna go buy it anyway because it tastes good and I want it.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And you know what I'm talking about.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: You're just trying to not want me to have fun, is what you're trying to tell me, Mr.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Banker.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Let me have all my money.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: And that's what people are doing with God.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: He's like, hey, hey, D, don't, don't, don't get lost in the life of alcohol and drugs and sin and running around and carousing.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Be good to one another, love one another, pray for one another.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you ain't gonna fool me like that.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: I want my drugs and alcohol and uh, you know, carousing lifestyle.
- 21:26SPEAKER_00: Don't you tell me that I need to go home and be a good husband to my wife and a good father to my kids.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: I know what I'm doing.
- 21:33SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna work, you know, 90 hours a week and they can fend for themselves, but I'm gonna have money in the bank for them because that's exactly what they need is more money.
