- 0:00It's a great time to talk to our friends, The Main Wire, who join
- 0:03us every Monday for Main Wire Mondays.
- 0:05Joining me now is John Featherston who is with us.
- 0:08John, how are things? Good morning, man.
- 0:11How are you? Oh, not too bad.
- 0:12You and I were chatting yesterday and I asked you for
- 0:14some thoughts on what you might want to chat about today.
- 0:16I loved, by the way, that there was such a target rich
- 0:19environment of so many different stories that we had plenty to
- 0:22get into. So I'll start off by asking you
- 0:24actually a pretty simple question, John Featherston.
- 0:26What is the big story right now that's in your head, like that's
- 0:29stuck in your head that you're following, you're investigating,
- 0:32you're talking about, you know, for the last, say, like 3 to 4
- 0:35days or so here in Maine. What's the thing that's really
- 0:37sticking out? Lewiston is in crisis mode is
- 0:43really what the big story is is like.
- 0:45I said the last three to five days, John, I'm not.
- 0:47Not the last three to five months.
- 0:48Come on. No, but I mean, as the weather's
- 0:52gotten better, Matt, unfortunately, I've been
- 0:53spending a tremendous amount of time in Lewiston talking about
- 0:58shootings, talking about children, shooting children in
- 1:01the streets. Graham Plattner ignoring me when
- 1:04I asked him questions about gun violence in Lewiston.
- 1:07The mayor, the mayor and the city councillors ignoring gun
- 1:10violence. You know, David Jones, a
- 1:13gubernatorial candidate on the Republican side, did a cleanup
- 1:16in Lewiston over the weekend, you know, and made a made a big
- 1:19difference, you know, you know, a one time difference in the
- 1:22city, but you know, you have to be concerned about a city where
- 1:26you have children shooting children in the daylight hours
- 1:30and leadership in the city just ignoring it.
- 1:33Yeah, they don't even seem to recognize that it's a thing.
- 1:36They're well, and I can understand why, I suppose,
- 1:38because they don't want to be at all responsible for the problem.
- 1:41So not acknowledging it, I guess they're just trying to keep it
- 1:44buried ultimately is I guess their strategy, I suppose.
- 1:47But it's amazing to me that they're not getting more heat
- 1:50for it. I know that there is some, but
- 1:52they, they citizens there should be up in arms about it.
- 1:56Absolutely. You know, when I spend time in
- 1:59Lewiston, you know, I look at the the skyline and you can see
- 2:03the good bones of Lewiston. But then when you drive down the
- 2:06streets and I've done a couple ride alongs with the Police
- 2:09Department and the Police Department go, well, look how
- 2:11many bullet holes are in this building or look at, you know,
- 2:14how how many crack types or needles are out in front of this
- 2:17building. You know, and the average
- 2:19citizen just has to be saying what is going on in my city.
- 2:22And they just did a reevaluation for the first time in 38 years.
- 2:27And some people's tax bills are going to triple.
- 2:31So you're going to pay triple the cost to live in a city
- 2:33that's plagued by gun violence, trash and and crack needles?
- 2:36I mean like what is going on? Yeah, well, that's the thing.
- 2:39And then now you're getting to the point where if you're a
- 2:41citizen to lose and you have to ask yourself, do I want to keep
- 2:43doing this? Do I want to continue to be
- 2:44abused like this for this kind of result?
- 2:46You know, it's one thing to get soaked entirely, but if you're
- 2:49going to be not having to pay the price of living there and
- 2:52the quality of life is going to be significantly degrading, then
- 2:55obviously that's not a good thing and you don't want to do
- 2:57that. So I would not be shocked if
- 2:59Lewiston starts seeing a major outflux of citizens out of that
- 3:02city. You know, Matt is, you know,
- 3:05we've done so much investigation on fraud in Maine and you just
- 3:10walk up and down Lisbon St. in Lewiston and you see money
- 3:14transfer station to home healthcare places and stores
- 3:20that don't have price tags on anything.
- 3:22And you sit there and go, what the heck is going on here?
- 3:24So you've got, you know, health, bogus healthcare, like I'll
- 3:28knock on doors and can't find any human beings in a money
- 3:31transfer station in a place that you can go in and buy food and
- 3:35other things that don't have any price tags.
- 3:37So it just jumps out to you and I'm not accusing anyone of
- 3:39anything. But like is or is is the
- 3:42healthcare transferring the money out And the reason there's
- 3:46no prices on anything because there's EBT and SNAP card
- 3:49benefit fraud. But there the density just on a
- 3:521 1/2 mile stress of of Luis and you just sit there and go.
- 3:56What is going on here? But the good news is, is it
- 3:59looks like there's finally some accountability coming from the
- 4:02federal government. Yeah, I was going to ask you
- 4:03about that. It sounds like there's there's
- 4:05been rumblings for a while, obviously, but I guess there's
- 4:07going to be some sort of an announcement this week maybe on
- 4:09the fraud front. You have a pretty big push
- 4:12nationally from the administration to try to look
- 4:14into this, investigate it and try to do something about it.
- 4:17And it looks like there might be some action coming.
- 4:18Do you know what ultimately to expect?
- 4:22Well, you know, Doctor Oz has, you know, put the main and
- 4:26specially Governor Mills on blast for the autism
- 4:29overbilling. We have provided so much
- 4:32background on just main care fraud coming and then like, you
- 4:37know, there was a bust in Lewiston for EBT card fraud.
- 4:41I just think it's all going to be systematic.
- 4:43I'm expecting an announcement that you know, the buck is
- 4:46finally going to stop here type thing and people are going to be
- 4:49held accountable. And you know how Maine handles,
- 4:52it's going to be interesting because I don't think Maine has
- 4:54the money to pay back the feds. And when the feds come and ask
- 4:57for the money back, it's going to be interesting to see how
- 5:01people are going to handle it because, you know, there's
- 5:04fingerprints on all of this coming out of Augusta.
- 5:07You know, I mean, it all comes right back to Augusta.
- 5:10And Matt, have you? You know, I know you have, but
- 5:14have you heard anybody ask the Democrats running for
- 5:18gubernatorial race about fraud? Not, not a, not a big topic.
- 5:22Certainly at the debates. I know that when they're asked
- 5:25questions about what they'd like to do for Maine, they just sort
- 5:27of focus in on opposing Trump and defending democracy.
- 5:31And there is not very much of A discussion about potential fraud
- 5:34or abuse inside the inside the system.
- 5:37And of course they don't want to talk about it.
- 5:39So it's not like they're going to bring it up either.
- 5:41So no, the answer is no, of course not.
- 5:44But, you know, shouldn't that be a red flag to everybody?
- 5:48It doesn't even depend on, you know, what side of the political
- 5:51aisle you come down on because Democrats should actually be
- 5:54more mad about the rampant fraud in Maine than even maybe even
- 5:58Republicans because it steals from them being able to do, you
- 6:01know, pet projects or blue ribbon Commission type of, you
- 6:05know, legislation fraud is so bad in Maine that it it's theft
- 6:11from every pocket of any taxpayer in Maine.
- 6:13And it doesn't even affect, you know, your political party.
- 6:16And the fact that it's not a big topic during these Democrat
- 6:20debates should be a red flag to. People, yeah.
- 6:23You know, that's a really good point, John.
- 6:24I mean, if you are a Democratic voter, I mean, you probably
- 6:27believe in the welfare state and, and a, you know, a very
- 6:30generous system, obviously. But if you do believe in that, I
- 6:34hope that the reason you believe in it is because you want to
- 6:37help people with that money. And if you're getting a whole
- 6:39bunch of grifters with their fingers all over it that are not
- 6:41actually getting that money to the intended places, then that's
- 6:44not actually doing it at all. And then on top of it, you're
- 6:47undermining any faith in the system.
- 6:49So, you know, people in the future, when they're asked
- 6:51whether or not they want to keep funding these things, are going
- 6:53to be much more likely to say no.
- 6:54So it's kind of like a bad thing all around if your ideology
- 6:58says, I like having very large and generous welfare programs.
- 7:02So you really should hate it and you really should do something
- 7:05about it. And you know, honestly, the
- 7:08candidates that are trying now to distance themselves from
- 7:11Janet Mills, this is a wonderful place to do that, right?
- 7:13Just, you know, heap the blame on her administration,
- 7:16especially now since she's not even running for Senate anymore.
- 7:19Say that she hasn't managed it well, but you'll do a better job
- 7:21of it and you'll get to the bottom of it.
- 7:22I mean it seems like a ready made answer in my book. 100% You
- 7:27know, Matt, the biggest concern that I see from a personal
- 7:30standpoint is, listen, nobody dislikes fraud more than I do
- 7:34because it's it's it's not fraud, it's theft.
- 7:37But when Steve and I do go to some of these home health care
- 7:40places and we find the most vulnerable of our society being
- 7:45charged millions of dollars in what I call fraudulent building.
- 7:50But then you find these individuals, they're not being
- 7:53properly cared for. They're not being properly
- 7:55bathed. You I have personally found
- 7:58people covered in their own urine and feces, people not
- 8:02getting their prescription medicine because the care
- 8:05providers can't read English to provide them the medication.
- 8:09We found one lady who hadn't had a shower in nine months.
- 8:13So you have all this fraud. But I think the bigger
- 8:16humanitarian crisis is that we're not taking care of the
- 8:19most vulnerable people in our society, and that should outrage
- 8:22everybody. It should indeed.
- 8:24John Feathers and joining us as we get on Mondays, every single
- 8:27week, an opportunity to talk with our friends from Maine Wire
- 8:30to talk about what's going on in the state of Maine and beyond.
- 8:32Before I let you go, John, also, I do understand that there's a
- 8:35ballot hearing on Tuesday over The Maine girl dad's ballot
- 8:38question. This is one of those like little
- 8:41hanging things that's still left out there about whether or not
- 8:43this is actually going to be on your ballot or not.
- 8:45Can you tell me a little bit more about what that hearing is
- 8:47going to be all about and what we may likely hear or see in it?
- 8:51There is a a lawsuit. They're challenging the validity
- 8:55of some of the signatures acquired.
- 8:58And you know, I think that's pretty common practice.
- 9:00You know, people will come out and question some of the
- 9:03validity of it. My concerns in the red flag is
- 9:06that I see is that this all comes back to Secretary of State
- 9:10Shanna Bellows and you know, and she's going to oversee this
- 9:13hearing and decide if the signatures are there.
- 9:16It's a very slim margin of, of, of signatures that will be left
- 9:22if he can make if they can make the ballot on this.
- 9:25So it's the the hearings tomorrow at 10:00.
- 9:29If you can't make it to Augusta, which I would recommend people
- 9:31do if they care about this issue, you can at least watch it
- 9:34on the Secretary of State's YouTube channel.
- 9:37It's it's an important topic because this ballot question
- 9:40will certainly probably be one of the most talked about, if not
- 9:43controversial ballot questions in the November election if it
- 9:46makes the ballot. Yeah, no doubt about it.
- 9:48Well, John, we really appreciate you stopping by the show today
- 9:51and talking to us a little bit about what's going on in the
- 9:53state of Maine. We'll talk again next week.
- 9:55Appreciate it as always Sir and talk to you soon.
- 9:57Have a great. Day.
- 9:57See you later.
