- 0:01Yeah, you gotta work. You gotta work. Bry sign is mine gotta
- 0:13show everybody is my sign, you gotta work. Cry shn another mind whom
- 0:19tag to die this day line, don't tell you gotta work. Let the
- 0:23conversation begin. This is Let's Talk with your host, Carl Lee. Hello,
- 0:29ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee and this is Let's Talk with
- 0:33Carl Lee. And I have my co host here with me, and we've
- 0:41been talking a little bit off air even before we got on. And because
- 0:46the subject matter today is is kind of interesting to me. The female basketball
- 0:54game has drawn an amazing amount of viewership, Like people are like crazy over
- 1:03the women's I And to be honest, Hollis, I don't even know if
- 1:08I've heard anybody talking about the men's game. Yeah, it's it's clearly the
- 1:18women's game. And it's I can't I mean, I don't even know how
- 1:23you can you can judge the the advancement or how quick the advancement. And
- 1:30maybe maybe it's not quick. Maybe some people say, oh it's taking a
- 1:34long time, but I'm gonna say within the last four years, yeah,
- 1:42I mean it's taken off. Yeah, definitely, And I think what's happening,
- 1:46like if you like, because I can remember watching like Tennessee with Pat
- 1:49Summit and you know, the great Connecticut teams and everything like that, and
- 1:53I think what's happened is that you have the absolute best players on court now
- 2:00as opposed to the men's game, as opposed to a lot of other college
- 2:07athletics. Not only do you have the best players on the court, but
- 2:12there's also a continuity, right because those same players have been at those universities
- 2:17for two and three and four years. So I think when you have those
- 2:22two situations happening. In addition, and what we've talked about prior to the
- 2:27show is that these are athletes with actual personalities. I just think sports not
- 2:34just at college. I'm talking about profession professional. It's like the Russell Russell
- 2:38and I love Russell Wilson. I think it's gonna be greater stillers, but
- 2:40it's like the Russell Wilson lization. I don't even know if I'm saying that,
- 2:44right of like just athletes where everybody's just this robot. You know,
- 2:50you're talking points and it's just no personality left in sports. And I think
- 2:53that the women's game particularly women's basketball. College basketball has brought personsonality back to
- 3:00sports. L s U and I wor Yeah, I think And again,
- 3:08you're gonna know more about this than I probably do. But though those two
- 3:14teams playing each other, because of the two individual players on those teams,
- 3:20has created a must see TV and and and there's even the conversation about talking,
- 3:30you know, talking trash, whether or not you know, is that
- 3:36okay? Is that okay? Well, let me ask you because we're from
- 3:38two different generations, So how do you view that? I like it?
- 3:44Okay, you know, I actually like for for myself, I'm not gonna
- 3:50sit out and I'm not gonna I'm not gonna be out there and I'm not
- 3:53gonna talk a lot of smack because the reality for what I was doing,
- 3:58I could end up being on the bank outside of that. Basketball kind of
- 4:01gives you a little bit more of a flexibility, so it's a little bit
- 4:04easier to do. That's a good point. That's a good point. You
- 4:08can because you can score three. Yeah, you can come back and score
- 4:13three, So we can. That makes so you know, football, you
- 4:16can, you can. You can die on the end of that trans tal
- 4:20you know, so I like it simply because of the fact that we don't
- 4:29see the We're we're trying to look at these women basketball, these women athletes,
- 4:34and we want the we want them to be like nice and kind and
- 4:41hug each other after the game. No, they're putting their entire life on
- 4:46the line in these games. I mean they put everything. Yeah, good
- 4:50point. They're putting everything that they have into these games. They don't want
- 4:56to lose. And I'm just like, man, I'm telling you, I
- 4:59just I hate where sports have gone. It's just becomes so corporatized. When
- 5:03you look at like professional sports, I mean, it's just it's almost devoid
- 5:08of passion. And then you have somebody like maybe like a Draymond Green,
- 5:11who's ww he takes away too far. It's just kind of he's on that
- 5:15outther end. He doesn't he does way too much. But just like far
- 5:17as the trash talking far as you know, these women, clearly Kaylin Clark
- 5:23and Andrewies, I'm sure they're they're not necessarily enemies per se, but they
- 5:27ain't buddies. They're not hanging out. What remakes it good? Right,
- 5:30she said? Reset She was like, Hey, we're we're We're fine off
- 5:35the court, yeah, but I'm gonna talk trash to anybody on the on
- 5:41the court when we're playing. We need that in sports, and I just
- 5:44feel like they brought it back because I mean, if you look around,
- 5:46you know, you may have like the Kelsey brothers in football, you made
- 5:50like I said, Draymond Green, you could say, but outside of that,
- 5:55and you talk about professional baseball, there's just nothing there. It's just
- 6:00we're just watching the games. I mean, college basketball has literally almost no
- 6:03personality right now. Right you know, there's great athletes, great basketball,
- 6:09great football, whatever, but it's just like, I just love where women's
- 6:12sports is going well, and they're going where I think men's sports where it
- 6:19was at one point and it got what happened, I think it went too
- 6:26far on the men's side, and so it's been it's it's been chopped down
- 6:30and you know, this is a penalty, this is get you kicked out
- 6:34of the game. And and and I'm not I'm not a I get that,
- 6:40but man, the women's game. I mean because even just like you
- 6:44know, we talk about the players, and you can say, I mean,
- 6:46obviously we're talking about arew Reeson in Clark. But there's players you know,
- 6:50from Stanford, from from USC all overs that have these same sort of
- 6:56traces as far as personality is concerned. But also the coaches, right,
- 7:00we got Kim Molki, you got Don Stanley, you got uh Oriama,
- 7:04you got coaches who have personalities too, and they're showing them, and they're
- 7:09showing, they're showing them, and and I don't see why there's any reason
- 7:15that we should be anti that. Definitely, you know, I think we
- 7:18ought to be promoting that because they're not doing anything to me. Okay,
- 7:26in my mind, they're not doing anything to hurt women's collegiate basketball. Now,
- 7:32the interesting things and I don't watch professional basketball on the women's side w
- 7:40n b A, I don't really, I don't really watch it. The
- 7:43interesting component, though, is knowing these collegiate athletes that are gonna go the
- 7:48part. You know, now all of a sudden, what's happened, is
- 7:53you gonna get You're gonna get my attention in the w n b A to
- 7:58where any of these girls and literally every team has at least two or three
- 8:03that easily could go to the WNBA and start right out the shoot. And
- 8:09that's what I'm and it's funny you said that, because that's what I was
- 8:13thinking this past week because I've lived literally this whole tournament. I've watched a
- 8:16bunch of gang as far as on the women's side, I mean I watched
- 8:20a lot. There's not too many I've missed. And what I said to
- 8:22myself, I'm gonna start watching WNBA ball because I got to see what this
- 8:26is about. I have to see if this is transferable, like far as
- 8:30the excitement that can be garnered, because even the WNBA, like the season
- 8:33is not as long. So maybe that kid, that excitement that we're seeing
- 8:39now can be transferred to the professional level. And when you start talking about
- 8:45the shooting capability, yeah, of some of these females, Yeah, I
- 8:50mean Kaitlin is like literally stepping across half court. Yeah, and just shooting
- 8:58a normal shot and and nothing but that. And and I like you said
- 9:03that, because that's what my other point was going to be, Like,
- 9:05not only are we talking about like the personalities and and and the showmen,
- 9:09they got a game. And what I love too is like, you know,
- 9:13all the guard play, but the big woman play. You know,
- 9:16you got the big girl from uh U c l A from South Carolina.
- 9:20Angel reaesed. I mean they playing the paint back to the basket. The
- 9:24game is just to me, it's almost a little bit more fluid, if
- 9:30that makes sense. It's it's more I don't know if I want to you
- 9:37use fluid. I'm like, I'm I'm thinking it's more exciting. It's more
- 9:41exciting simply because and I don't want to say it the wrong way, Like
- 9:48I don't I've not seen a female or females being able to play ball as
- 9:54well, not as like the skill set, but the skill set having this
- 9:58skill dribbling, passing, Like it's not like they lock any skill set offense,
- 10:09defense, there's there's like they don't lock any of that and what and
- 10:13again, just bringing it back to a conversation, I know nobody wants to
- 10:16hear from us, but just even when we talk about transferrent, I think
- 10:20this is maybe a case study in how that continuity is better for the game
- 10:28as opposed to all the movement, because like when you look at a Yukon,
- 10:33like on the men's side, they essentially have a new team that they
- 10:37didn't have last year. I mean they don't have like just that continuity where
- 10:39you have that player who's going to be there for two and three years that
- 10:43we all know and we can get and we can get to know right now,
- 10:46and and and everybody knows. Everybody likes to know all their players on
- 10:52their team, you know, especially in those starters, they want to be
- 10:54the name of them all off well, Unfortunately, when you don't have that,
- 10:58And again, and I've been asking the question about what is that culture?
- 11:01What is that thing about culture? You know, how does that actually
- 11:05exist? How do you create it? To your point, when you got
- 11:11five players who played together for three years at least and they know every single
- 11:20piece about what you do, how we do it, that's chemistry. That's
- 11:26chemistry, that's continuity. That gives it a flow to the game. So
- 11:31when you have players coming in and out far just on the court, lineup
- 11:35changes, you almost don't miss a beat. I was watching the game this
- 11:39weekend in LSU had freshmen out there just balling, you know what I mean.
- 11:43And that's the other thing. When you come out on the court as
- 11:46a freshman, you ain't supposed to you ain't supposed to just blend in like
- 11:50ain't nothing. You're supposed to be the weak link, you know what I'm
- 11:54saying. But these girls are able to transition in there and they know what
- 12:00to expect. These passes that they're getting, break into the basket, through
- 12:05the legs, behind the back, all that kind of stuff. You have
- 12:09to be able to anticipate that that pass could come. If I've got the
- 12:13ball, you ain't got to worry about that pass. Company that ain't happening.
- 12:18But you talked about Kaitlyn. She got the ball, may you know
- 12:22much better pass it than what I thought she was. She's actually that's where
- 12:26I think she's gonna shine at the professional level. I mean, she can
- 12:28shoot the shot and all that, but I think it's a facilitator. She's
- 12:31going to be like that. I think my thing is with that is I
- 12:37think she's the best overall player because she does everything like she ain't just going
- 12:46out there to score. I'm not saying the top players are all just out
- 12:50there trying to score. They're playing d and they're blocking shots, they're doing
- 12:54all these kind of stuff getting the rebounds. But I don't know if anybody.
- 13:00I mean, she's breaking she's she's looking at breaking the assist record,
- 13:05all these kinds of things, and that speaks to me. That speaks more
- 13:11volumes, more volume to me. Then you just scorn. And even if
- 13:16your team, I'm gonna make the case, even if your ten team wins,
- 13:20this player is doing everything possible that they can do, you know.

- 14:05Now back to the conversation. All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're backing
- 14:09to take a quick break earlier in the show than we normally do. And
- 14:13and in that break, we've got ourselves that a new guest. He's not
- 14:20actually new to the show, he's been on the show before, but he's
- 14:24back. Deliicet Hornbuckle is in the building, and what's going on? Man?
- 14:31How you doing? I'm doing? How you doing? I'm just I'm
- 14:33just hanging out. Be careful with the coach. You gotta be careful what
- 14:37the coach I'm doing? Good Man, We've been talking. We we started
- 14:46the show out talking about women's basketball, the advancement of it, and obviously
- 14:52our and l s U plays the night and we all know, I mean,
- 15:01and that's that's the other crazy thing. Everybody knows. Everybody knows what's
- 15:07happening in this game. They know the folks in this game. And we
- 15:11were just trying to talk about just how advanced these players are. I mean,
- 15:16there is good they're They're shooting is as good as the men, because
- 15:22pound for pound it is probably better because that was you know, women's basketball.
- 15:28It's crazy how it's evolved because they have always been, for the most
- 15:33part, more fundamentally sound, and so some of that skill work was always
- 15:37there to overcome when the game wasn't as athletically advanced. So when you talk
- 15:45about things like shooting, and I would say, uh, you know,
- 15:48I'm a kind of sewer consistently boxing out those types of things they do that
- 15:54now you know, the majority of women have really again have evolved from an
- 16:00athletic standpoint to where you know, you can't tell too much difference between a
- 16:04men's and a women's game. So it's been really fun to just watch.
- 16:10When I was talking, when I'm looking at it for as far as the
- 16:11collegiate level, what do you think contributed to that? Because I said,
- 16:17I think there's a continuity as a consistency where you have players actually staying for
- 16:21a period of time. But outside of that, and you are a basketball
- 16:26coach, coach of au travel ball, what else are you seeing from that
- 16:30perspective. I think it has been years of extraordinary personalities within the women's game
- 16:40that shine more of a spotlight on it and gave more young ladies sort of
- 16:47the wherewithal and the confidence to go out and do those things. And I
- 16:52think it's just been a byproduct of years after years of seeing someone that you
- 16:56can really truly emulate yourself after and just putting more work and becoming again just
- 17:03more athletically aggressive. I like that and they take I know when I played
- 17:11basketball and I was just a defensive guy. I really wasn't to score.
- 17:15The coach didn't want me to shoot. But there was the reality of the
- 17:22idea of just being just winning, right, But you wanted to score.
- 17:29Everybody wanted to score. I think like these women in this game, in
- 17:36this day and age, that ain't all of it. They realize that they're
- 17:40scoring forty. Yeah, but they are also fifteen to six, three steals,
- 17:47five steals, eight steals. You know what I'm saying. They liked
- 17:51the whole concept of the whole game. I like that the one girl from
- 17:56South Carolina, and her name escaped me of Swatkins, was it was calling
- 18:00the squad walkings, Yeah, from South Carolina, from USC from southern Carroll
- 18:06County. No, I'm talking about us Walkings from South Carolina. She's defense.
- 18:11She had like four or five blocks and steals and to your point,
- 18:14she was just doing it all and and okay. So and if you try
- 18:17to translate that into a player, and you know, you know, you
- 18:21could look at maybe a Dennis Rodman who's playing d getting rebounds, diving on
- 18:25the floor, that might and think about how special he was because of that.
- 18:30And you got girls doing that like like it ain't nothing yeah, for
- 18:34sure, you know, and it's just and it's just crazy. How do
- 18:38we how do we think? Like when you when you think about the evolution
- 18:42of the girl's game, I think, to me, I think it's quick,
- 18:48like I think it was like overnight. Yeah, it just seemed like
- 18:52an overnight. And and did we miss some girls? I know there was
- 18:56some individual girls that were good. But is this group, is this particular
- 19:00group now the new face and the definition of women's basketball, I mean,
- 19:08personally, I don't think so. I think and again this is ain't it's
- 19:12not to hate, but I think far as just and I'm just talking specifically
- 19:17college athletics. The men's game to me is so it's almost unwatched. It's
- 19:22not really good. It's not a it's not a good product on court.
- 19:26And I think because of that, we just started our tension got diverted to
- 19:30the women's game. Because women's of the women's games, they always balled,
- 19:33you know, like I said, even going back to past something and all
- 19:36them, so it's always been good. I just think our attention is there
- 19:40now that's just min But it's because of this group. I don't I don't
- 19:44think so, I don't know I mean, I think the attention is there
- 19:47partly because of the robust personalities that that that that part of it was not
- 19:53there. And I think it's good for the game. I think it's good
- 19:57for just general equity in society that you know, they are no different than
- 20:03us other than their their woman. Uh. And so I think all good
- 20:07things come from it. Uh. And it's been very exciting to watch that.
- 20:10We we hit we hit on that a little bit too earlier about the
- 20:12trash talking, that was something that was something that you you know, girls
- 20:18you don't they don't do that in girls sports. You know, they you
- 20:21know, they happy and all that kind of stuff. And to watch them
- 20:23now, but the thing is they've always done it. I get we just
- 20:26didn't want You're right, we didn't watch. I clearly can't compress. I
- 20:32didn't watch. And and the personalities. I mean, now that there's more
- 20:34money in it, more money means more media, all right, So that
- 20:38translates to the viewer, what's gonna happen? What what? What's what's gonna
- 20:42happen with the w N B A because they're less than the n I L
- 20:45money it is, so I think it will hopefully expedite it this, but
- 20:52no, no, from a business standpoint, it just can't. Because we
- 20:56we we will get there, But it has to be a point to where
- 21:02sixty percent of their games are sold out, right, because that's how those
- 21:06owners are going to earn their bottom line, to be able to have that
- 21:10revenue split, right, and so, But as this game becomes more popular
- 21:15across on all genres of folks, then I think you will solely but surely,
- 21:19and again I hope it's expedited, but it will at some point I
- 21:22think have more money infused into the women's game. But I say this the
- 21:27WNBA, they have to let the personalities in. You cannot try to corporatize
- 21:33this. To me, like the NBA, the NBA, far as the
- 21:37regular se again, NBA Playoffs championship is the best basketball in the world,
- 21:41the best to watch. But I'm just saying, far as the year's standpoint,
- 21:45they've just gotten all the personality out of it. It's become the euro
- 21:52League essentially. And I'm saying the WNBA don't follow the NBA's path. What
- 21:56they're doing now treads your own way and let the personality's in, can you,
- 22:03Okay? But let me ask Let me ask both of you this question.
- 22:07When you play I don't know what the number, what the total number
- 22:11of games that they play, But if you're playing sixty seventy games, NBA
- 22:19eighty two, you're playing eighty two games. Man, I can't show you.
- 22:25I can't show you that same thing for every game. I don't know,
- 22:30bro back in the day, it seemed like maybe I was a kid,
- 22:32but it seemed like but I sordint it was every game. But I
- 22:36you know, and again I don't know, I don't know if the number
- 22:38of games went up, you know, they if they've raised the number of
- 22:42games, you know, But I just like, I just don't know how
- 22:48you can you can sustain that that same drive, that same energy every game
- 22:56we played. See we played sixteen Okay, we played sixteen games, and
- 23:02a coach would tell you at any given time after a loss, we just
- 23:07wasn't up. We just got caught flat. This is one of those games
- 23:10we were flat. You can't be flat in college basketball, women's basketball,
- 23:18black point. So I'm just trying to figure out, like, how do
- 23:21you keep how do you keep that energy like constantly? Well? I mean
- 23:26you know also too that season is a lot shorter. For one, I
- 23:30mean, the college season is going to probably span anywhere in between twenty eight
- 23:33to thirty six games on average, depending on how far you go, if
- 23:37you compete in your conference tournaments, or if you get to compete in some
- 23:41type of you know, extra tournament i e. NCAA or n I T.
- 23:47But also I think there's the element that they're still in school and so
- 23:52that excitement of beating up on arrival, then going to getting to go back
- 23:56to campus that night. You know what that means, all right, and
- 24:02then everybody knows that you know what that means, and then you get to
- 24:06go, you know, to the cafeteria the next day as big woman or
- 24:08big man on campus. It's a whole different environment. And yes you're getting
- 24:14paid for it, but I think it just creates that that energy and it's
- 24:19just a different type of product. I'd agree with that. I can I
- 24:22can see that. Yeah, yeah, I mean I can't. I can't.
- 24:26I can't argue with it. I just know, like from you know,
- 24:30trying to be ready for every game, and when you come off of
- 24:33one of those games that almost went overtime you barely wanted you somebody knocked down
- 24:41the last shot, you take that deep breath, half of the game is
- 24:45over, and then you you right back on the court in a couple of
- 24:48days. I'm sorry. And I think also with being a professional, it's
- 24:53just like us, there's gonna be towns where you have an off day.
- 24:57Yeah, there's gonna be towns where you have an with that. And unless
- 25:02you just like didn't want to study or take a test when you're going to
- 25:06school, like you want to go back to the class, I don't care
- 25:08what anybody says, right, it's just a totally different thing. And most
- 25:12people, some people obviously are getting paid right now, but by and large,
- 25:17it's not your job, and it's purely about the excitement going to impress
- 25:22your fellow classmates and things of that nature. Whereas again, once you get
- 25:26a contract, it might suck that you lost, but you know, I'll
- 25:30get up and do this in a couple of days and cash that check and
- 25:33I'll be okay. Yeah, And let's be clear when we talk about nil,
- 25:37everybody ain't getting paid. No, it's only a select few that's really
- 25:40really getting the bag. Everybody else is just do you do you think do
- 25:44you think let's let's let's take what are we down? Four six eight teams
- 25:48were down to eight teams. Eight teams where women's and women's right, Well,
- 25:55well, yes, so the other two one yesterday which was what North
- 25:59Carolina, they and South Carolina. Then tonight we got Yukon and USC and
- 26:06then we got lsu versus hour. Yeah. Okay, So those those five
- 26:11starters on each one of those teams, I'm gonna make the case are getting
- 26:17something. Yeah, they getting something, but not say they probably not get
- 26:21Yeah, I don't mean they getting all of them may getting hundreds of thousands
- 26:23of millions. But I would say a bag is relative though, is relative
- 26:27because you know, if I go on campus and they give me a vehicle,
- 26:34my parents get to come to all my games. And let's just say
- 26:37I get twenty five grand twenty years old. That's a bag that's right right
- 26:42now. Yeah, I'd be I'd be happy, yeah, you know,
- 26:45And or like even a house so that your parents can come for sure and
- 26:52live with you, will come and stay as long as they want. Right
- 26:55up, that's your house. That's important, that matters, you know.

- 27:38the conversation. All right, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carl Lee.
- 27:41And I got two delegates with me, Delegate Hornbuckle and Delegate Lewis Hollis.
- 27:52I'm gonna I'm gonna jump into something that I know is a really kind of
- 28:00difficult subject, a testy subject, but I'm like, for me, I'm
- 28:07okay with it, just simply for the for the fact that you know,
- 28:11I think where I wanted, where I'm meaning it to go, it's likely
- 28:15that we can we can we can get there, Okay. So one of
- 28:23one of the one of my main concerns about the conversation going on about Crispy's,
- 28:34which everybody knows is in some form of fashion attached to Randy Moss restaurant
- 28:44in honey To, And I think most people in Huntington has probably either try
- 28:52to go to get something to eat or decided they weren't they weren't interested in
- 28:59it. People have come from out of town, out of state just to
- 29:06just to go with the with the maybe even with the potential of maybe seeing
- 29:11Randy there, and and and and so I'm gonna I'm gonna put a period
- 29:18there, and I'm gonna go somewhere else. I have I have, and
- 29:25I've said this multiple times on on the show and on other shows. One
- 29:30of the hardest things that I deal with in my own mindset is West Virginia
- 29:41and their superstar athletes like I have, I have, I have. I've
- 29:48struggled with the idea of why why we always find ourselves providing the negative we
- 29:59serve we literally leads. In my mind, it feels like we search for
- 30:03the negative for the reason not to like that person. Now we cheered for
- 30:08him when he was in high school, we cheered for him when he was
- 30:11in college, or her if they exactly if they stayed in state we were
- 30:18gonna cheer for. But now if they were to go to pitt Penn State.
- 30:25Perfect example, Kurt Warner, a Pinevale native, a West Virginia native.
- 30:32Right, he don't even like he it's hard to get him to come
- 30:34back to to do anything just because of how he was treated, because he
- 30:41went where he wanted to go. Yeah, and I and and so it's
- 30:47confusing to me that we can't find a way to celebrate. I can,
- 30:56and I'm older than both of y'all. Two, I can remember even even
- 31:00just Jerry West, Jerry West's name, and people talk about he, oh,
- 31:04he never came back. He never done this, you know, da
- 31:07da da. And then the perfect example, because I don't because this is
- 31:11not even I don't even think it's a color thing. I think it's just
- 31:14a it's just the reality of sometimes we we lose sight of that special Like
- 31:22Jason Waite. Yeah, like I know he comes back and does something.
- 31:29He does, he comes back and does some things. But wouldn't you like
- 31:33to think that he like, I mean, how great he was, Like
- 31:38why wouldn't why wouldn't he be here doing all kinds of stuff into the into
- 31:44the why is he not doing somebody's commercial? And you know what I'm saying,
- 31:48And outside of you know what's what's going to we'll touch the Chrispy situation.
- 31:52But I know Moss for years, he would come back and he would
- 31:53hold a camp and he would do the signing of autographs. So probably I
- 31:57would say his whole ten yere in the league, you did the same thing,
- 32:01and him come back and host camps in different things of that nature.
- 32:05So I know he was, he was present here and far this the restaurant
- 32:08situation again, I think people may automatically attach it to whatever's going on down
- 32:15there, whether it be right or wrong with him, but it may not
- 32:19necessarily be have anything to do with him, right because you got to remember
- 32:22and I know when I went down, you know he brought the food to
- 32:27me. That ain't his job. Now, you know what I'm saying.
- 32:30He's helping out with his investment. Yeah, and some people have lost sight.
- 32:35Whether you like it, love it, or hate it, that is
- 32:37an investment opportunity for him. Those people are the owners and co founders right
- 32:43here and see, and I didn't really know that until I heard them say
- 32:46that. I really yeah, yeah, yeah, they're the owners and the
- 32:49co founder. So again in regards to somebody loves it, hates it,
- 32:53indifferent that honestly shouldn't have any attachment to r Indian Mine because I know plenty
- 33:00of angel investors who put into local businesses and they might not show up on
- 33:07the bottom line or they might not be there, and I guess they're attached
- 33:10to it, but they're also not running it right, And so I don't
- 33:15even know if we're applying you know, the same standard in this situation.
- 33:20But I think too to your point of you know, when you regardless of
- 33:25whatever that person plays, their role is in this bigger organization, I have
- 33:31to be conscious that if I represent the organization that you also represent, that
- 33:37I'm in fact representing you because obviously ran them off your Hall of Fame and
- 33:42your superstar or you, Shawn Delegate, and you are my minority chair person.
- 33:46So how I conduct myself, particularly in the public, I have to
- 33:52be conscious of that because I'm not just representing me. Well, if I'm
- 33:57not just representing my business, but I'm also representing this this legacy, this
- 34:00legend. That's what I'm saying, And that's interesting. Yeah, That's interesting
- 34:05because when we were talking, even before we were getting got into some people
- 34:07don't know the difference. Some people just Raindy moss old, he's messing up,
- 34:12you know, they think that, and and and and and that makes
- 34:16the point too, because and I think that you're making the point that that
- 34:23conversation, with that interview being part of that podcast, that well, that
- 34:32was that was. I think that I don't know if that was necessarily the
- 34:36way that you want to go, just just just because I'm not sure if
- 34:44because again people are people are thinking Randy's on the Randy sitting on the top
- 34:49of this and sit in it. You know, he's sitting somewhere in it,
- 34:54and so now this becomes an argument about about him versus what's happening at
- 35:02the restaurant exactly. And the unfortunate thing is this is at the root of
- 35:08it all. This is at the root of it all. And I have
- 35:15noticed, probably over i would say, the span of the last five to
- 35:20eight years, everyone thinks that their a reality TV stall because everybody has Facebook
- 35:29and all these social media platforms, and their problems and their gripes should be
- 35:35broadcast all over the place. Because people literally have in their mind because of
- 35:38phones that they are starr and so unfortunately they were not thinking, provided they
- 35:45have one, we're not thinking with their business cap. They just wanted to
- 35:50gripe and be the star of the day. And I don't think it's helpful
- 35:54to their quest and run an efficient practice in a business. And so they're
- 36:00going to have to live with that. And you know, I believe that
- 36:01everybody gets second chances, but they're gonna have to figure it out real soon
- 36:06or they're gonna be with that. And I'll say this for my part,
- 36:08like I haven't had the chance to I think when I went down there,
- 36:12it was just the restaurant was just opening, So I haven't had the chance
- 36:15to go in there. And I'm not, you know, casting dispersions.
- 36:19I don't know a far as who's right and who's wrong in this situation.
- 36:22I don't know if anybody really I don't know who's right right, And I'm
- 36:25not saying that, but I think that again, if you're in a leadership
- 36:29position, but more importantly to our conversation, if you representing somebody, if
- 36:34I'm representing somebody, I have to be conscious of how I react or how
- 36:38I respond to things. That are going on, whether I'm right or they're
- 36:44wrong, or I'm wrong and they're right. So I think that's sort of
- 36:46the bigger lesson here. And and and I'll give this as somewhat of an
- 36:52analogy, like if I try to call Randy and he don't answer, but
- 36:55I don't, I'm not gonna come back on the show and say I called,
- 37:00try to call Randy, he ain't an answer, Like he has that
- 37:04opportunity or that choice to do that. And whether we we don't hang out,
- 37:10you know, if we if we happen to be in the same spot,
- 37:13we might hang out. We might do that. You know, I
- 37:15would say that we were cool. You know, we're good. You know,
- 37:20I love him to death. I love everything about everything that he has
- 37:24overcome to get to where he is. It bothers me. It bothers me
- 37:30that everybody's like and again, I hate to bring this up, but there's
- 37:37no way I can like so like even the ketchup issue, Okay, even
- 37:43the ketchup issue. Does anybody really believe that Randy sitting there saying no,
- 37:47we ain't getting we don't want no catch up. I hope people don't.
- 37:51I hope, you know, I would hope, you know, like I
- 37:53don't think that's a Randy thing, you know. You know, I'm thinking
- 37:58what Randy has done, which nobody really I won't say nobody, but a
- 38:02lot of people don't don't see it. He invested in something in Huntington hoping
- 38:12it would do well. Yeah, and again I had the food, and
- 38:16I'm not being prejudiced. I like the food. Yea, I heard it
- 38:21was good. I like the food. Everything that I had was good.
- 38:27I haven't heard anybody necessarily say anything that. I've not heard anybody say anything
- 38:31negative about the food per se. I've heard the catch up thing, I
- 38:36heard, you know, just all that kind of stuff. But for the
- 38:37most part, I don't know if you can say, you know, And
- 38:40I don't know any restaurant that's good at everything, so so they don't have
- 38:45to be good at everything. But I think when you when you put yourself
- 38:50in this kind of situation, it puts him in a situation. You like,
- 38:57you're bringing him to the forefront, and now people who don't care for
- 39:01him or don't know him, now they thinking that or just don't understand business.
- 39:07I think that to your point, Deligal Hornboo because sometimes if we have
- 39:12a if we're famous, or we have a big name, sort of like
- 39:15what Trump does. Trump doesn't own all these business What he does is lend
- 39:19his name here there, there there right right. So it could be a
- 39:22situation where I lend my name, I lend my resources, I lend my
- 39:25connections. So to your point, it's not as though he's in there,
- 39:30you know, cooking chicken sandwiches, you know what I mean, you know,
- 39:32or people, I'm sorry, go ahead, but you know it's also
- 39:36like this, you know, I'm sitting here thinking as we're discussing this.
- 39:38It's almost if let's say I hypothetically bought in Vidio stock. All right,
- 39:45So technically if I buy stock, I technically have ownerships in that right,
- 39:49right, But I'm not there making the day to day decisions, right while
- 39:52their ledger is going up or down. And again, I own stock in
- 39:55that company, and I'm buying it because I hope there's a return on it,
- 40:00right, But that also doesn't mean again that I'm there day to day
- 40:04making those decisions and driving that business. And so we're just going to be
- 40:08really careful on how we assess things. And I'm just I'll let's go just
- 40:13quickly, because I was actually listening to something last night and what it was
- 40:17talking about it was kind of sort of relating to something else, but they
- 40:22were talking about kids not understanding that when you walk out into the world,
- 40:27you represent not only yourself, but you represent your family, you represent your
- 40:30school, you represent more than just yourself. When I am doing things,
- 40:35particularly if i'm any you know, if I have any sort of microphone,
- 40:42if I have any sort of light on me, you know, we're delicate.
- 40:45We represent our districts. So not to say that you have to be
- 40:49you know, soft short, that you have to you know, be extraordinarily
- 40:53careful. But I have to be careful in that I represent myself and the
- 40:58people that I represent correctly. Yes, and and and and let me make
- 41:02sure that everybody understands that piece of that. That is, anybody who would
- 41:07represent Randy Moss when I talk about legends, building legends, I don't you
- 41:13know, to me, I was, I was, It was it was
- 41:15an honor for him to come and do a show with me and sit down
- 41:21and have a conversation. You know, when you so if you're gonna sit
- 41:27here and then try to make a case that he didn't do this. He
- 41:32don't have to do anything, you know, I mean, in all reality,
- 41:37he don't. I mean, there's a whole lot of folks who have
- 41:39been great athletes in West Virginia who hadn't done anything in West Virginia. Yeah,
- 41:46and and and at least he tried to put his dollar into something here
- 41:54in West Virginia. And I can remember even before that happened, how people
- 42:00were talking about that he ought to do something here, he ought to come
- 42:02back and do something here. Well, when you okay, so when you
- 42:07do that, when you try to help somebody else out, which I'm assuming
- 42:12that's pretty much how this situation took place. But again speculating, he you
- 42:17know, he helped invest in this place with the folks who are running it,
- 42:23does that not count? But and I would also to your point,
- 42:27I would also say for the people, for the public, I believe that
- 42:31maybe there are to be some grace there. To Delaga Hornbucker's point, sometimes
- 42:37we get our phone and we want to make skits and we want to make
- 42:39memes about everything where we can maybe just handle some of those complaints in privately,
- 42:46like we don't just the same way you don't want the owners of this
- 42:50restaurant representing most incorrectly. We as the public, we as the fans,
- 42:53we as home team, don't want to represent him incorrectly as well in this
- 42:58endeavor. What should what? What should have happened? If anything, if
- 43:04anything, if anybody should have said something, Should anybody have said something?
- 43:10Or should this have been something that the three of them just had a discussion
- 43:15and try and maybe they did and and and and they decided that they were
- 43:21going to say whatever they wanted to say. And maybe Randy okay, that
- 43:24that's that's that's a possibility. I'm just saying. I'm just saying, I'm
- 43:34just saying, and I agree, and I agree, but I'll just make
- 43:37the case that I'm just making the case that I don't factually know that,
- 43:43yes, but I would never I don't think there's any way that I could
- 43:50find myself ever saying anything negative about somebody who who who invested in me.
- 43:57I don't care what Brandy does ever again with me. He did something with
- 44:01me, but who's I don't think. But the thing is, I don't
- 44:05know if anybody's necessarily speaking negatively on Randy on I don't know if I don't
- 44:09know if I've heard that, per se. I don't think. I don't
- 44:14think they're saying anything negative about him, But I think there's just a misconception
- 44:19and how much he's involved. And because it's the old adage of heavy is
- 44:23the head that wears the crown, you know that, and so he is
- 44:30the figurehead like it, love it or hate it, and so he's just
- 44:32going to catch the flag. Yeah, okay. And again I think it
- 44:36also comes from a place of from some ignorance of just understanding the business structure
- 44:40and how it flows and how it works. But hey, man, it's
- 44:44you know, it is what it is. And yeah, I'm just you
- 44:47know, I'm I'm hoping, I'm hoping, you know, in the in
- 44:52the in the long run of this, if there is such a thing as
- 44:57as a long run going forward, that you know, everybody understands the role
- 45:06and and and and what what maybe what you should and shouldn't do, and
- 45:13to that point, and I and I and I say, I don't want
- 45:15to take it here and I'm not gonna take it there. But there's a
- 45:19reason why when these big corporations, when they get in trouble, when they
- 45:22find themselves in controversy controversy. It's a reason why they issue written statements prepared
- 45:28by attorneys or legal counsel because they got to say the right point blank.
- 45:31Yes, they got to say the right thing. It's the reason why they
- 45:34do that, correct and could I'm gonna give them the benefit and I don't
- 45:39want to give them the benefit of the doubt per se, but on the
- 45:43benefit of the doubt, what got you so mad to make you like okay?
- 45:50Because you you you went to you went to a podcast to to to
- 45:57do this, to say these things. You you you came on you do
- 46:00that was there not somewhere in there you would think like, uh no,
- 46:06maybe maybe we shouldn't maybe we shouldn't go there, or yeah, I mean
- 46:12we're we're also assuming that there's that thought there, right, which which we
- 46:15would think is a reasonable thought. But if you've never had to encounter something
- 46:20like that, that might not be a reasonable thought to you. You might
- 46:22just say whatever is on your mind and forget that you are in a public
- 46:28space and you and it was absent of you that you're actually attacking your potential
- 46:34customers, Which is the wildest thing I've ever seen and heard of by the
- 46:37way, was because it's just it's just a way to go about things.
- 46:44At the end of the day, did it seem did it seem angry to
- 46:46you? It's it seemed like it just seemed like there's something else that's going
- 46:58on. And I guess it's the pressure bust pipes. Okay, So so
- 47:04I'm gonna give you the better word. So what you're saying is there was
- 47:07there's pressure going on in the restaurant, and and and and their conversation on
- 47:15the podcast was from the pressure in which they're feeling in the restaurant and or
- 47:22from from the public. I mean, I'll just simply say, look,
- 47:28I work customer services my first job out of college. And the mantra was,
- 47:32like, you know, we often hear the customer is always right.
- 47:36Well that's incorrect. The customer is not always right. But the customer is
- 47:42the customer, and and and just in case you missed that, the customer
- 47:49is the customer, which in turn means that's who you gotta treat. You
- 47:55gotta treat that person in a in a and and a way to make them
- 48:00want to come back. And the fact of the matter is they're not always
- 48:04right. The customer is always right and that and that's what you have attorneys
- 48:07and lawyers for in public relations in different things of that age. That's who
- 48:12you have these teams for, is to sort of combat these sort of things.
- 48:16Yeah, and if you if there is a negative or untrue yet review,
- 48:21you have a team that's going to take care of that. In addition,
- 48:23my thing is like, again, regardless of what's ever going on,
- 48:28I'm never going to represent you in a negative life. I'm never going to
- 48:30represent you in a negative way or pitch you in a position where you have
- 48:36to take up for me for something I just said flagrantly. I just think
- 48:43when I when I there would be like for me, there'd be no reason
- 48:47why I could ever speak negative toward Randy. Not because it's Randy Moss,
- 48:58but because of the the Randy that I know. Okay, just just just
- 49:02the Randy that I know. And he may not do any and everything that
- 49:08I want him to do or ask him to do, but what I understand
- 49:15is everything here in West Virginia is not the most important thing to him.
- 49:23Correct, and he's got things bigger and more talking about. From the customer
- 49:30standpoint, yes, yes, yes, From the customer like he doesn't have
- 49:34time to deal with every specific customer issue. He doesn't have time to respond
- 49:44to this part. And again, that's not his job needs it was not.
- 49:47No, it's not, it's not, it's not. He doesn't have
- 49:51any time to respond to this. He doesn't have any respond to the one
- 49:53that happened in Huntington. And yet the scary thing about it is we're talking
- 50:02about him, and that's that's to me, that's the bad thing about the
- 50:08the the relevance of his name and anybody and everybody has an opportunity to go
- 50:17after that. And I think that I think that's I think that's a shameful.
- 50:23That's a shameful situation to have to live in when anytime something that you're
- 50:31around, anytime that anything that you participate in, you put your name on
- 50:37it and it goes left or right for whatever the reason. But but I
- 50:44think, I mean, I feel you on that. But that's just part
- 50:46of the game too. That's that's that's You're gonna catch this strap Andel if
- 50:51you in the seat. The fact of the matter is what I'm looking at
- 50:53is the people who are supposed to be insulating me, like take care of
- 50:59that, so I don't catch as much I'm gonna catch. Like you said,
- 51:01if you're the owner to project the owner in any business, you're gonna
- 51:05catch some heat. And that's cool, but take care those people who are
- 51:07playing the front. Take care of that so it don't hit me as hard.
- 51:13Unforced turnovers. I like that, don't do me like and to your
- 51:20point and to and to to that name to me, that's that. That's
- 51:28what I mean, that's really what's happening. Like you know, people are
- 51:31faltering and and and trying to get it up off of them, to get
- 51:37it away from them, and and and in the means, so if it's
- 51:43not me, then it's got to be y'all. So if the show is
- 51:45bad, it ain't me, it's y'all. And here's the thing too,
- 51:51because I know that we're probably gonna get a little of that drive. But
- 51:54but here's the thing. Though you made it public, not necessarily else and
- 52:00I'm not doing I don't think none of us are talking specifically who's right and
- 52:05wrong far as any daily business. I don't know that. I'm not talking
- 52:07about that, like, because he could be one hundred percent right, they
- 52:10could be one hundred percent wrong, whatever. But I think the again,
- 52:14when you open the door, you're opening the door for a lot to come
- 52:17in. And you gotta be conscious that when you when you're in the seat,
- 52:21you gotta you you've gotta be careful when you're talking about if you're going
- 52:25to talk about something that includes delegates, right, you know, I'd have
- 52:30to be awfully careful in having that discussion out in the public and saying,
- 52:37you know, whatever I think you know about the two of you all you
- 52:42know, and whatever we're doing, you know, oh they don't come.
- 52:45You know that ain't got nothing to do with it. I think you gotta
- 52:49be rig be careful with that, and with somebody who's somebody who's already had
- 52:58And I almost I feel bad in saying this, and it even it even
- 53:05kind of chokes me up a little bit, because like, how much does
- 53:08this brother have to take? How much? How much? How many?
- 53:13How many times? Yeah, how many how much stuff? You can't put
- 53:17anything else on him? I mean, like, there ain't no reason to
- 53:21put anything else on him. Here's a brother who has just been great for
- 53:25the he's been great and has put this state on the map. I mean,
- 53:31he's the best thing you know you talked about him being the best,
- 53:36if not the best athlete. I think he's the best athlete ever. You
- 53:40know, now you can you can you said best athlete ever like all time?
- 53:45Yeah you think so? You're he's talking about from the state, and
- 53:52that's a good show show if you want to see if you I'm gonna make
- 53:59him as good an athlete as anybody. I mean he top ten, I
- 54:05mean definitely for all time. I mean he's the greatest West Virginia. That's
- 54:12nobody playing and doing the things that he's doing. But if you want to
- 54:15go nationally, like right, he's he up there, him him, because
- 54:23I'm trying to figure out who's nine, who's he? Who's Listen. My
- 54:32cousin was in town from d C a few weeks ago for a family funeral,
- 54:37and we got to talking to my Auntanetta's houses mom, and I didn't
- 54:42even know about the whole track deal where the coach basically just hadn't him run
- 54:47track and a meet at Marshall and he won a championship. Yeah, you're
- 54:52just getting out there. I didn't know me and Jersey, I'm going to
- 54:55go meet everybody. Know. He just about joining high school. I mar
- 55:01he won the Southern Conference or whatever. It's something nutty like that, like
- 55:06literally like like I think it was one hundred and two hundred something. You
- 55:08can you can go right now. He went out there, He just went
- 55:13out he might have practiced for maybe like a league like messing around or Randy
- 55:15time, and went out there and championship. So two sport athletes that Mark
- 55:21Wow and and could have been basketball heard there trying to get him out there
- 55:27on the baseball diamond. Yeah, he was heard that he played in high
- 55:30school. He was really heard about that. But he legit went out there
- 55:35with minimal training or anything and went out there and beat up on everybody on
- 55:38that track. That's wow. That's why I didn't know that one. I
- 55:42mean so so, I mean, I mean, when you when you be
- 55:47careful for people's name, yeah, yeah, yeah. And and let's just
- 55:52make the case. Let's just make the case that regardless of anything, that
- 55:58anything that Randy Moss is a part of out Yeah, there's no reason to
- 56:04be there's no reason to be negative because he ain't trying. If he's got
- 56:07his name on it, he ain't trying to be negative. He's trying to
- 56:09help he's trying to help you. He's trying to help and we need to
- 56:14we need to do better with with those type of athletes. We need to
- 56:17be better with those kind of people. Because here's a brother. At the
- 56:22end of the day, I mean, come on, how much does he
- 56:24need to go through? Yeah, and look, man, shout out to
- 56:28chrispers Uh, it's chrispers or Crispy's Chris Chrispy's next time, I'm Honeyton,
- 56:32I'm definitely stopping through, So shout out to him. I hope they,
- 56:36like I said, I hope they prosper. I hope they you know,
- 56:38I hope all this can just get behind them. But I would just say,
- 56:43man, let's just protect each other like at all costs, you know
- 56:45what I mean, And let's just handle things like professional like I said,
- 56:49you know, Deligahrnbuger, you know, Coach Lee. Sometimes it ain't always
- 56:52our fault, but sometimes if you're in a position, you gotta follow on
- 56:55the settle, you gotta handle business and you got to move on to the
- 57:00next day. I just don't. My only problem is is that you know
- 57:04Randy's been falling on the shore. Well, ain't talking about right, I'm
- 57:07just talking about dog from my projective. He really ain't got nothing to do
- 57:12with this, all right now, me too, yeah yeah yeah, So
- 57:16all right, well, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed that conversation,
- 57:22and we'll we'll figure out once we watch that, we'll we'll read all
- 57:25the comments and see what side you're on. But we'll be right back again
- 57:30next week on Let's Talk to Carly. Delegates, I appreciate your time,
