- 0:35and NDI president at the Co Free Church of the Nazarene in
- 0:38Chennai, India. In her daily life, she is an
- 0:41assistant professor and clinic opsiologist in a government
- 0:44hospital and is also pursuing geological studies.
- 0:49She will share with us about the team.
- 0:51It's from joy. Joy at Christ's arrival.
- 0:55Today's Bible reading is taken from Luke chapter 2, verses 8 to
- 1:0014. And they were in the same
- 1:03country, shepherds, abiding in the fields, keeping wash over
- 1:07their flock by night. And lo, the Angel of the Lord
- 1:11came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them,
- 1:16and they were so afraid. And the Angel said unto them,
- 1:21Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,
- 1:26which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in
- 1:31the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
- 1:36And this shall be a sign unto you.
- 1:38Ye shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a
- 1:42Manger. And suddenly there was with the
- 1:45Angel, a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God in
- 1:50saying glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace,
- 1:55goodwill toward men. Picture this for a moment.
- 2:01It is a cold winter night. A small group of shepherds
- 2:05huddle around a flickering campfire, wrapped in their
- 2:09cloaks, whispering as they keep watch over their sheep.
- 2:14It's an ordinary night, nothing remarkable, just the same
- 2:18routine. They have lived day after day,
- 2:20night after night. And then suddenly everything
- 2:23changes. An Angel of the Lord appears,
- 2:27and the glory of the Lord surrounds them.
- 2:30These men who lived on the margins of society, simple,
- 2:35unnoticed shepherds, are suddenly standing in the
- 2:38radiance of heaven. Naturally they are terrified,
- 2:42but the Angel speaks words that come and astonish them.
- 2:47Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will
- 2:50cause great joy for all the people, great joy for all
- 2:56people. The joy announced that night was
- 3:00global and personal, big enough to shake the heavens, yet close
- 3:05enough to reach ordinary workers in an open field.
- 3:10The Angel continues. A saviour has been born to you.
- 3:15God's joy is not distant, it is personal.
- 3:19It comes near, right into the places where we are, even when
- 3:24we least expect it. And this announcement didn't
- 3:27happen in a palace or temple, but in a field.
- 3:32God chose ordinary people in an ordinary place to be the first
- 3:37to hear and the first to share the good news.
- 3:41As the shepherds listened, heaven erupted in praise.
- 3:45Glory to God in the highest heaven.
- 3:49This Advent season, many of us long for joy.
- 3:54The shepherds remind us that joy is not something we create.
- 3:58Joy is something we receive. Jesus is the joy that meets us
- 4:03where we are, in our routines, in our responsibilities, in our
- 4:07ordinary moments, even in the fields where we never expect
- 4:11anything extraordinary. Today, shall we ask God to help
- 4:16us notice one place where his joy shows up, because the God
- 4:21who met the shepherds in their fields is the same God who meets
- 4:24us in our everyday lives. Let's pray.
- 4:30Father God, we thank you for the good news of great joy announced
- 4:34on that night long ago. Thank you for your joy that
- 4:38reaches us in ordinary places just as it reached the
- 4:42shepherds. Open our eyes today to notice
- 4:45your joy breaking into our lives.
- 4:49Full our hearts with the assurance that Christ has come
- 4:52to us to bring hope, peace and joy and help us carry that joy
- 4:59into the world around us. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
