Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: Hey, hurdlers, Emily ABOUDI here bringing you another episode of
- 0:25Speaker 1: five Minute Friday, which is actually never really only five minutes,
- 0:29Speaker 1: but you get the gist from hurdle. I'm having a
- 0:34Speaker 1: really good day despite things not going entirely as planned.
- 0:40Speaker 1: I would say, if you're new to this segment, let
- 0:43Speaker 1: me just make sure you know how things go here.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you this story. I'm going to offer
- 0:49Speaker 1: you a thought prompt to take you into the weekend,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and then I'm going to share with you my highlights
- 0:55Speaker 1: of the week, some content pics, some things that I
- 0:58Speaker 1: think you should check out that I am digging at
- 1:01Speaker 1: the moment. Okay, so the story. This morning, I had
- 1:06Speaker 1: a obgyn appointment, my annual trying to check off all
- 1:11Speaker 1: of my general exams at the beginning of the year
- 1:15Speaker 1: as safe as possible. I had my appointment scheduled for
- 1:19Speaker 1: eleven am. My ob is about like just under two
- 1:25Speaker 1: miles north of my apartment in Central Harlem, and I
- 1:32Speaker 1: was already kind of having a day at around ten
- 1:36Speaker 1: am and decided that it could be a good idea
- 1:40Speaker 1: for me to walk there. I wanted to take advantage
- 1:45Speaker 1: of the opportunity and listen to one of Apple Fitness
- 1:50Speaker 1: plus the new Time to Walk episodes. So that is
- 1:55Speaker 1: exactly what I plan to do. So I laced up
- 1:58Speaker 1: my sneakers, I got out side. It was definitely brisk
- 2:03Speaker 1: at thirty degrees, I think, and I started walking and
- 2:07Speaker 1: I got out there. I'm on my way. I realized
- 2:10Speaker 1: that I'm gonna get there at like ten fifty five,
- 2:13Speaker 1: even though they say get their fifteen minutes early. In
- 2:16Speaker 1: my head, I'm thinking, you know what, I always get
- 2:19Speaker 1: there fifteen minutes early. I never go in until at
- 2:21Speaker 1: least fifteen minutes after the hour, Like I'm just going
- 2:24Speaker 1: to get there five minutes before. It's going to be fine.
- 2:26Speaker 1: I get to my destination, it's five minutes before eleven,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and I try to ring the buzzer and no one answers. Luckily,
- 2:32Speaker 1: at this point, a man and his two sons, they're
- 2:35Speaker 1: walking out from the dentist's office that happened to be
- 2:39Speaker 1: right there, so they push open the gate. I go in.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I go through a couple of doors to the place
- 2:45Speaker 1: where the office has been for years, where my appointment
- 2:49Speaker 1: was confirmed for and see that the door is locked
- 2:56Speaker 1: and in fact, the office is one hundred percent vacant.
- 3:01Speaker 1: So I'm like, this is not not at all convenient.
- 3:04Speaker 1: And I pop into the dentist's office next door and
- 3:08Speaker 1: I ask if they know what's up. They tell me
- 3:10Speaker 1: that she hasn't been there for at least a year.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I log on to my Oscar Health insurance app find
- 3:17Speaker 1: out that there's another address for her, despite the fact
- 3:20Speaker 1: that my appointment is confirmed again at this one. I
- 3:24Speaker 1: go there. It's about three blocks from where I am
- 3:27Speaker 1: at that moment. Thank god. I walk in. I find
- 3:30Speaker 1: out that yes, this is the only place she practices,
- 3:34Speaker 1: and no, they cannot see me at the time that
- 3:37Speaker 1: I was scheduled to be seen long ex hel so
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'm two miles from home. It took me about forty
- 3:45Speaker 1: minutes to walk there, and the woman at the front
- 3:49Speaker 1: desk was so accommodating and like very apologetic, despite the
- 3:53Speaker 1: fact that it was not their error at all. In fact,
- 3:56Speaker 1: if it was anyone's error, I would say it would
- 3:58Speaker 1: be Oscar Health error, kindly and with respect, because they
- 4:03Speaker 1: probably should have taken this other office off of the
- 4:05Speaker 1: portal for booking. But regardless, I schedule a new appointment
- 4:11Speaker 1: for about a month from now, and I turn around
- 4:16Speaker 1: and I walk out, I call Oscar and I'm like, hey,
- 4:20Speaker 1: just so you know, you should probably take this option
- 4:24Speaker 1: off of the you know app The woman was like, wow,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you have so much patience. I would have been so mad,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and like, yeah, I wasn't ecstatic about the fact that,
- 4:38Speaker 1: you know, I walked all the way up there and
- 4:40Speaker 1: couldn't be seen like I was hoping to be seen.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, it's not like
- 4:47Speaker 1: anyone conspired to inconvenience me, but rather, this is just
- 4:52Speaker 1: what happened. And I had a nice walk and I
- 4:57Speaker 1: walked back home and it just that's how it was.
- 5:03Speaker 1: You know. I think so often we get so wrapped
- 5:06Speaker 1: up in worrying about the things that we can't control,
- 5:10Speaker 1: in freaking out about something that we literally cannot change,
- 5:15Speaker 1: and by just accepting what was today and trying to find,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, the good parts in my morning despite the inconvenience,
- 5:25Speaker 1: I was so much better for it. So my question
- 5:29Speaker 1: for you this week, when was the last time that
- 5:33Speaker 1: you may have overreacted and in retrospect, what would you
- 5:38Speaker 1: have done differently? Again, when was the last time that
- 5:41Speaker 1: you maybe overreacted and in retrospect, what could you have
- 5:47Speaker 1: done differently. I feel like I'm always this prompt. This
- 5:50Speaker 1: question is often about gratitude, so of course, in wake
- 5:54Speaker 1: of this story, you could think about something that you
- 5:57Speaker 1: are grateful for as well, But I'm a lean in
- 6:00Speaker 1: that overreacting question. Highlights of the week this week, as always,
- 6:05Speaker 1: links to all of this goodness can be found in
- 6:08Speaker 1: the show notes. Listen to the episode from radio Headspace
- 6:14Speaker 1: Mindfully Present. Lately I have been listening to Up first
- 6:18Speaker 1: first thing in the morning, like as I'm making my
- 6:21Speaker 1: bed before I go to the gym, and then following
- 6:24Speaker 1: that with radio Headspace, and there is just Andy Puttacum's voice,
- 6:29Speaker 1: my good friend. He's been on the show a couple
- 6:31Speaker 1: of times. I'll throw the links to those episodes in
- 6:33Speaker 1: the show notes as well. Andy's voice is so calming
- 6:37Speaker 1: and delightful. I really really loved what he said in
- 6:40Speaker 1: this episode, in particular talking about you know the idea
- 6:43Speaker 1: that a lot of brands or companies or just people
- 6:47Speaker 1: are often putting the word mindful in front of everyday
- 6:51Speaker 1: activities like going for a mindful walk or sitting down
- 6:55Speaker 1: to do some mindful coloring. And he postes this question
- 6:59Speaker 1: like what are you doing when you're not doing those
- 7:02Speaker 1: activities mindfully and asks really like, what is it that
- 7:06Speaker 1: we could be doing differently so that most of our
- 7:09Speaker 1: activities and most of the things that we are doing
- 7:12Speaker 1: on the day to day have a little bit more
- 7:15Speaker 1: focus and a little bit more intent. And I liked that.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Check it out. I got an email today about some
- 7:22Speaker 1: free fight Camp. Fight Camp is a service that offers
- 7:25Speaker 1: on demand boxing workouts. They are giving away a free
- 7:29Speaker 1: two month membership now through this coming Sunday, January thirty first,
- 7:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty one, depending on when you're listening to this
- 7:37Speaker 1: using the code strong Start twenty twenty one at checkout
- 7:41Speaker 1: when you purchase a fight Camp Personal or Tribe package.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Thought that was a good freebee to pass along. To
- 7:48Speaker 1: get in on that, just head on over to join
- 7:51Speaker 1: fightcamp dot com. Read Kamala Harris, a Doctor, Jill Biden,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and the politics of dressing from Harper's Bizarre. My good
- 8:00Speaker 1: friend Niki Oganaki is now Harper's Bazaar's new er digital director,
- 8:07Speaker 1: and this is her first article for the site, unpacking
- 8:10Speaker 1: the fashion choices from last week's inauguration and what they
- 8:14Speaker 1: symbolize for where the administration is headed. Good work, Kid,
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'm proud of you. Sweat with Ashfit past Hurdler a
- 8:24Speaker 1: guest Ash Wilking. If you haven't listened to our episode,
- 8:27Speaker 1: I highly encourage you to check it out. She recently

- 8:35Speaker 1: of workouts, literally a ton of stuff from low and
- 8:38Speaker 1: high impact, strength, mobility, cardio, kickboxing. The list feels endless.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I love ash because she programs smart like so often
- 8:48Speaker 1: when I've done her workouts in the past, I'll find
- 8:51Speaker 1: myself doing some sort of an exercise or a variation
- 8:54Speaker 1: of an exercise that I have never done before, and
- 8:57Speaker 1: I love that challenge. There's a seven day free trial
- 9:01Speaker 1: for the app, and then the subscription is only twelve
- 9:04Speaker 1: ninety nine a month, which these days is pretty awesome.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Plus you can use the code bad ash ba dash
- 9:12Speaker 1: at checkout for twenty five percent off your first three months.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Check out and watch Bling Empire. Yep, I went there
- 9:23Speaker 1: on Netflix. I'm not gonna lie. We've you're targeted for
- 9:26Speaker 1: this show like every time you open Netflix lately, so
- 9:29Speaker 1: I would be surprised if you haven't heard of it.
- 9:31Speaker 1: The other night, I turned this on and literally within
- 9:35Speaker 1: what felt like four seconds I was five episodes deep.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It is. It's just drama, but it's entertaining drama, and
- 9:42Speaker 1: sometimes you just need a little bit of no offense,
- 9:46Speaker 1: mindless television to get you through, you know. Last, but
- 9:53Speaker 1: not least. I think I've definitely talked about this on
- 9:55Speaker 1: the show before, but if you do not subscribe to
- 9:57Speaker 1: the Fast Women newsletter, definitely get in on that. I
- 10:00Speaker 1: subscribe to it last year. I love looking forward to
- 10:03Speaker 1: it every Monday in my inbox and it's a newsletter
- 10:06Speaker 1: by Alison Wade that covers women's distance running, so as
- 10:09Speaker 1: a runner, I really love it, but I just love
- 10:12Speaker 1: how it really champions women athletes and female athletes, and
- 10:17Speaker 1: I'm about that vibe in this week's installment of the
- 10:20Speaker 1: Weekly Hurdle the Hurdle Newsletter, if you don't subscribe again,
- 10:24Speaker 1: like to do that. In the show notes, I'm also
- 10:26Speaker 1: highlighting a slew of other newsletters that I love getting
- 10:30Speaker 1: in my inbox in the regular so make sure to
- 10:33Speaker 1: go check that out. And that's it for this week.
- 10:37Speaker 1: As always, tag Hurdle over on Instagram at Hurdle podcast.

- 10:43Speaker 1: to do so, it would mean the world to me.
- 10:45Speaker 1: If you could head on in to the iTunes store
- 10:48Speaker 1: and rate and review the show, It only takes just
- 10:51Speaker 1: a few seconds. We are so close to that thousand
- 10:55Speaker 1: reviews mark. Thanks y'all, another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys
- 11:01Speaker 1: next time.
