Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / ITB Contract Series: Why Now Is Best Time For Eagles To Pay DeVonta Smith Again
Transcript
- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on? Everybody? It
- 0:15Speaker 1: is Jeff Mosher and Adam Kaplan. Big week here coming
- 0:18Speaker 1: up for the Eagles. They will have their mandatory mini camps,
- 0:21Speaker 1: which everybody is expected to show up for or else
- 0:24Speaker 1: there are steep fines, Adam Kaplan, you know that. So
- 0:27Speaker 1: it'll be pretty interesting. That's gonna be later this week,
- 0:30Speaker 1: So we'll have Andrew there and Adam will be there.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I might even make it to one and then we'll
- 0:34Speaker 1: have good intel coming out of those camps. But for
- 0:37Speaker 1: now here. On Tuesday, we're going to continue our podcast
- 0:41Speaker 1: series where we're looking at contracts and we're doing it
- 0:44Speaker 1: differently this year, separating in position groups so that we
- 0:48Speaker 1: can get the max amount of intelling discussion on these positions.
- 0:52Speaker 1: So with that said, we did on Monday, Adam, we
- 0:56Speaker 1: did quarterbacks running backs, really had some interesting discussion on that.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I think in this episode when we do wide receivers
- 1:02Speaker 1: tight ends, we start off right away with a really
- 1:05Speaker 1: interesting situation to go inside, right, and it starts off
- 1:08Speaker 1: with DeVante Smith, who is now the new number one
- 1:13Speaker 1: for this team at wide receiver with the departure of
- 1:17Speaker 1: AJ Brown through a trade. So I know you have
- 1:19Speaker 1: said in a recent podcasts he had signed a team
- 1:23Speaker 1: friendly deal that worked for both earlier in his career.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Now he's in the middle of it. At some point
- 1:29Speaker 1: they're going to have to redo it to recognize him
- 1:32Speaker 1: as the number one. The question is, does it make
- 1:35Speaker 1: sense to do that now, Adam going into this year
- 1:39Speaker 1: or wait? Because when you wait after the year, right
- 1:43Speaker 1: then you have to worry about what the market might
- 1:45Speaker 1: look like. And there are some pretty good wide receivers Pickens, neighbors, Nakua, Flowers,
- 1:52Speaker 1: Addison who are all waiting for extensions that if any
- 1:54Speaker 1: one of them have some great years, they could continue
- 1:57Speaker 1: to inflate the tag. So what say you? Adam Kapp
- 2:00Speaker 1: went on this situation with DeVante's.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Now, if he doesn't get a contract adjustment by started
- 2:05Speaker 2: training camp, I'll be shocked. I mean, his deal is
- 2:10Speaker 2: so undervalued. Like he sign a team friendly deal. Let's
- 2:13Speaker 2: call like it is. Okay, this is what our job is.
- 2:14Speaker 2: We can call like it is. Yeah, he's signed a
- 2:17Speaker 2: very team friendly deal. Okay. This guy has been close
- 2:21Speaker 2: to perfect every year. He's been good, great hands, super character,
- 2:27Speaker 2: super competitive, He's everything you want. Now he's going to
- 2:31Speaker 2: be their top passing target. Now you're seeing all the
- 2:34Speaker 2: Nico Collins got his contract adjustment right at the very least,
- 2:39Speaker 2: just until they get an extension done. You have to
- 2:42Speaker 2: do what the Texans do with Nico Collins. Collins is
- 2:45Speaker 2: a good player. He's not in DeVante's class, by the way,
- 2:47Speaker 2: not even close Towante's better football player. Collins is good.
- 2:50Speaker 2: He's been hurt a lot, but he's a good player.
- 2:52Speaker 2: He's gonna make They gave him guaranteed. He had no
- 2:55Speaker 2: guaranteed money next year. They took care of that. They
- 2:57Speaker 2: gave him adjustment this season. They're gonna get him up
- 2:59Speaker 2: to thirty million. Dvante's deal when he signed it right
- 3:06Speaker 2: before the draft two years ago April sixteenth, twenty twenty four,
- 3:09Speaker 2: was the contract execution as I have it here, was
- 3:13Speaker 2: a three year extension worth twenty five million a year.
- 3:18Speaker 2: The way that the market was going was very undervalued.
- 3:22Speaker 2: And to me, if I'm Nicole lenn his his agent,
- 3:27Speaker 2: I'm not taking under thirty five million. Drake Lenon's not
- 3:30Speaker 2: even close as good as Drake. Lennon's a good player,
- 3:33Speaker 2: Don't get me wrong. It's a d threat. There's certain
- 3:37Speaker 2: things he does really well. But Smith has just been
- 3:39Speaker 2: a better football player from day from day one. It's
- 3:42Speaker 2: just it's just just the way it is. So London,
- 3:45Speaker 2: by the way, got one hundred and forty one million.
- 3:49Speaker 2: Like you said, it's like you could you could pay
- 3:52Speaker 2: him later, you could do it extential later. But there's
- 3:55Speaker 2: got to be to treat him with respect, like Eagles
- 3:58Speaker 2: took care of Saquon Barkley when they didn't have to.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I know, he had the best year in NFL history
- 4:02Speaker 2: from beginning to end running back twenty fours. Made an adjustment,
- 4:06Speaker 2: but they've got to take care of him. The Eagles
- 4:08Speaker 2: are just great at the way they treat their players.
- 4:11Speaker 2: And b West has been on our show before, remember him,
- 4:14Speaker 2: he got his extension. He was very undervalued, very underpaid,
- 4:18Speaker 2: and they took care of the right thing. Yeah, so
- 4:20Speaker 2: I sure they have to do something by training camp
- 4:23Speaker 2: at least an adjustment.
- 4:24Speaker 1: Let's give the people an idea of what the market
- 4:26Speaker 1: looks like. First, Let's also talk about the overall. Let's
- 4:33Speaker 1: tell you you mentioned what DeVante Smith's contract is, but
- 4:36Speaker 1: what is it from an apy standpoint? Twenty million year,
- 4:41Speaker 1: twenty five million a year. Okay, so without saying where
- 4:45Speaker 1: that ranks, just to let people know. I mean, Jackson
- 4:47Speaker 1: Smith and Jig Budd just had a deal done this offseason.
- 4:50Speaker 1: He's about I believe he's around forty two million, maybe
- 4:53Speaker 1: a little bit more than that. Jamar Chase is around
- 4:55Speaker 1: forty million. You just mentioned Jake Drake London at thirty five,
- 4:58Speaker 1: so DeVante's Smith is really likes. He doesn't even rank
- 5:02Speaker 1: in the top ten or fifteen. So that's whyfore down Yeah, right,
- 5:07Speaker 1: and then that market might look even bigger next year
- 5:13Speaker 1: at this time if one or two of those guys
- 5:16Speaker 1: that I mentioned, whether it's Pickings, whether it's Nikua, if
- 5:19Speaker 1: he can keep his head on straight, neighbor, I mean,
- 5:21Speaker 1: this thing might get to a point where the next
- 5:24Speaker 1: big guy to sign it could get to forty five million.
- 5:26Speaker 1: So that's why it makes a lot of sense. I
- 5:28Speaker 1: think you could actually, Adam, if you're the Eagles, give
- 5:32Speaker 1: Davante Smith an extension that includes a real bump in pay,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and then still wind up having that look like a
- 5:38Speaker 1: team friendly deal at some point after those guys that
- 5:41Speaker 1: I just mentioned reset the market, and you have already
- 5:45Speaker 1: taken care of Davante Smith and don't have to worry
- 5:47Speaker 1: about trying to get in there in echelon or neighborhood,
- 5:49Speaker 1: because it's very possible Dvante Smith can have like a
- 5:52Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and what type of year this year?
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why, at the very least, there are a
- 5:58Speaker 2: lot of ways you could do it. You could do
- 5:59Speaker 2: it and adjustment. Now take care of him, which you should,
- 6:03Speaker 2: the Eagles should do, and then do an extension next
- 6:05Speaker 2: year when the when the deals go forty like you're
- 6:10Speaker 2: talking right now right with Jackson Smith and Jigba Jays said,
- 6:14Speaker 2: who you talked about. He broke the bank best contract
- 6:17Speaker 2: in NFL history by far in terms of average per
- 6:20Speaker 2: season forty over forty two million per season. Okay, now
- 6:25Speaker 2: it's a it's a team friendly structure because the Seahawks
- 6:28Speaker 2: will not adjust at all, big signing bonus and then
- 6:34Speaker 2: lots of bells and whistles. The full guarantee of signing
- 6:37Speaker 2: is where the club gets a little bit a break,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but the player and the agent get a they're over
- 6:44Speaker 2: forty two million. It's it's legit, I mean it is,
- 6:47Speaker 2: but by structure, it's Seattle structure. They won't change for anyone,
- 6:51Speaker 2: right and he goles there their big option bonus structure.
- 6:53Speaker 2: We've talked about one hundred times. Now again he's making
- 6:58Speaker 2: twenty five million the year. DeVante deal is outdated. They
- 7:01Speaker 2: have to take care of him. It's just it has
- 7:03Speaker 2: to happen. Something's got to happen. He can't be playing
- 7:05Speaker 2: on this and Drake line to make it thirty five
- 7:07Speaker 2: million year. Come on, Drake lenees not DeVante's class, not
- 7:10Speaker 2: even close.
- 7:12Speaker 1: No, no, I mean, yeah, they're different types of receivers.
- 7:15Speaker 1: But you're right, and Davante, I think we all expect
- 7:19Speaker 1: to show well, we'll see the full Davante to be uh.
- 7:22Speaker 1: I did the math on him. Over the last four years,
- 7:25Speaker 1: he has averaged sixty five yards per game. This is
- 7:28Speaker 1: as a number two wide receiver and over a seventeen
- 7:30Speaker 1: game season that extrapolates to an eleven hundred yard season.
- 7:34Speaker 1: He's only had eleven hundred yard once. But I mean,
- 7:37Speaker 1: I don't think any of us would be surprised if
- 7:38Speaker 1: he is well over the eleven hundred get closer to
- 7:42Speaker 1: the twelve and thirteen hundred yard mark as Jalen hurts
- 7:44Speaker 1: his number one guy from a volume state.
- 7:47Speaker 2: That's why, right, that's why if you're if you're Davante.
- 7:52Speaker 2: You know, his roles, his past targets are going to
- 7:54Speaker 2: go way up. Yeah, because it's like him and then
- 7:56Speaker 2: everybody else. And that's the point I'm talking about this
- 7:59Speaker 2: is that it's just gonna go up, and you know
- 8:03Speaker 2: it'll be I'll be interest to see what happens in August,
- 8:06Speaker 2: you know, late July, early August. If it goes like
- 8:10Speaker 2: it needs to go, that there's at least at a
- 8:12Speaker 2: minimum adjustment. If not before it doesn't happen. You can
- 8:15Speaker 2: do it anytime. They can do it tomorrow, you can
- 8:17Speaker 2: do it in six weeks, but they have to do
- 8:20Speaker 2: the right thing by the player.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I'm really curious to see how well Sean Manion's scheme works,
- 8:26Speaker 1: if it works, and if if they're able to create
- 8:29Speaker 1: a couple of more easier lay up catches for DeVante Smith,
- 8:33Speaker 1: because I feel like he earns every yard of that
- 8:36Speaker 1: eleven hundred and six yards that he gets per year
- 8:39Speaker 1: because he's contested catching, he's tight window catching. You know,
- 8:43Speaker 1: he takes hits and he lands on his shoulder, he
- 8:45Speaker 1: lands on his head, he lands on his knees. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: mean it's very rare. You see DeVante Smith just completely
- 8:51Speaker 1: wide open, unless he's just beating somebody over the top
- 8:55Speaker 1: like on a dagger. But even then that's because he
- 8:58Speaker 1: won the route right with with great route running. He's
- 9:01Speaker 1: so precise with that. I'm curious to see if there
- 9:04Speaker 1: are just a few nice little play action layups where
- 9:08Speaker 1: he can just catch the ball over the middle, run
- 9:11Speaker 1: up the field, get some yards, maybe head out of bounds,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and not take as many hits as he's taken. Because
- 9:15Speaker 1: for all this to work at him, he's got to
- 9:17Speaker 1: stay healthy. And we know he's got a slight frame.
- 9:19Speaker 1: We know he's had some knee issues, and if you're
- 9:21Speaker 1: going to be a higher volume past target, then you're
- 9:24Speaker 1: also going to be a higher volume contact guy.
- 9:27Speaker 2: He's been incredibly durable, though I'll say this is about Davante.
- 9:29Speaker 2: He's been more durable than Drake Lennon. Drake Lennon's numbers
- 9:32Speaker 2: they're pretty good. Sure, you know. Now he's been their
- 9:34Speaker 2: X receiver, so that's there's bet in the two. You
- 9:37Speaker 2: have to understand the way that Drake Lennon was used
- 9:40Speaker 2: when he was their Z. Lonon's been their X, so
- 9:43Speaker 2: obviously he's going to get certain type of throws on
- 9:45Speaker 2: your point where Davante was the z aj Brown was
- 9:49Speaker 2: the X. But now it's more about targets because you
- 9:54Speaker 2: vacated so many targets. It's DeVante Smith now as we
- 10:01Speaker 2: get through contracts and kind of sort of mix it
- 10:03Speaker 2: up here after DeVante, it's hard to cot Makayle Lemon
- 10:09Speaker 2: should be the second highest targeted player on offense. I
- 10:14Speaker 2: mean DeVante, I say should. He's a rookie, got to
- 10:17Speaker 2: learn the offense. He's going to play the slot position mostly,
- 10:21Speaker 2: and with this offense, when they go eleven, he's definitely
- 10:23Speaker 2: going to be inside. It's just a matter of because
- 10:28Speaker 2: we don't have a book of many and he's never
- 10:29Speaker 2: called plays before. He also has to see what he
- 10:32Speaker 2: sees in training camp and how comfortable Lemon is? Who
- 10:34Speaker 2: still want a hamster injury right now? And how how
- 10:38Speaker 2: how they going to diversify the pass star good group
- 10:40Speaker 2: here is it? How much you know, God, it's been
- 10:42Speaker 2: mister red zone last season? Is he gonna Is he
- 10:45Speaker 2: gonna be used differently because we don't know. We know
- 10:47Speaker 2: there's in the West Coast offense. There are a lot
- 10:49Speaker 2: of inside passes, a lot of seam passes against cover three.
- 10:53Speaker 2: Certain certain zone coverages. That's big in with West Coast offenses.
- 10:58Speaker 2: So I'm really interested to see what happens here. But
- 11:02Speaker 2: again getting back to the contracts, it's Davante twenty five million.
- 11:05Speaker 2: When you look at that, and then it's it really
- 11:08Speaker 2: drops off. I m kayle Lemon's got his four years
- 11:10Speaker 2: plus the fifth year option. Yeah, Hollywood, Hollywood, go ahead.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I was gonna say, another reason, they get it done
- 11:18Speaker 1: now and give Davante the money this year next year
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the answer, because the Eagles are paying almost no
- 11:25Speaker 1: money to the rest of their pass catching group. I
- 11:28Speaker 1: mean they're below market even Goddard right as a tight end.
- 11:31Speaker 1: We'll get into that, but like they're not paying a
- 11:33Speaker 1: ton of money because Lemon's on a rookie deal, Hollywood,
- 11:36Speaker 1: Brown's on a one year deal. Dontavian Wix they traded for.
- 11:40Speaker 1: They give me an extension. It's nice, but it's it's
- 11:42Speaker 1: like number you know, four receiver money in the in
- 11:45Speaker 1: the in the greater scheme of things, and then of
- 11:47Speaker 1: course with Goddard and Stours and we'll get to the
- 11:50Speaker 1: tight ends. The point is the future of the Eagles offense.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Passing offense guys like Lemon guys like Stours Davante. Davante
- 11:57Speaker 1: is the only one who's who's making an he's not
- 12:00Speaker 1: even making top market money. So you have this ability
- 12:03Speaker 1: to do it right now while you're waiting on Lemon
- 12:05Speaker 1: and Stours to develop. And you know, maybe they bring
- 12:08Speaker 1: in another wide receiver next year or the year after
- 12:10Speaker 1: or something if they feel like they need it. But
- 12:12Speaker 1: the point is they have the funds to do it
- 12:14Speaker 1: now and even next year with Brown's money coming off
- 12:17Speaker 1: the you know, the ability to split it because of the
- 12:19Speaker 1: post ju one and next year it's all like totally off.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Then they're good, they'll be fine.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Well, the big thing for them is they move twenty
- 12:26Speaker 2: nine million this season it's fully guaranteed in cash, and
- 12:29Speaker 2: twenty one million next year, which is not guaranteed, but
- 12:32Speaker 2: only four million was guaranteed next year. But the big
- 12:34Speaker 2: thing is they moved the twenty nine million off, they
- 12:36Speaker 2: absolutely could take care of Smith and after that, like
- 12:39Speaker 2: you said, don Tavian Wicks, they guaranteed nine million over
- 12:43Speaker 2: two years. It's not a lot. The guarantee in year
- 12:48Speaker 2: two and twenty seven is small. Where he's getting the
- 12:52Speaker 2: guarantees basically with his signing bonus and the cat and
- 12:55Speaker 2: the base salary. He's getting a lot of it in
- 12:58Speaker 2: year one, so he's guaranteed to come back next year,
- 13:01Speaker 2: depends how he plays. It's you're you're right, they've they're
- 13:04Speaker 2: not really paying other than smitty. Marquise Brown will make
- 13:08Speaker 2: five million fully guaranteed. Elijah Moore's contract. We should mention
- 13:11Speaker 2: him because it's highly unlikely he'll make it. But if he,
- 13:14Speaker 2: if he blows it up in training camp, he can
- 13:17Speaker 2: make it interesting because they they could always use a
- 13:20Speaker 2: backup slot. More More has no guaranteed money in his contract,
- 13:26Speaker 2: but the one point three one five million he's got
- 13:29Speaker 2: a We mentioned this is the last show. The Eagles
- 13:32Speaker 2: love doing these with bottom of the end, bottom of
- 13:34Speaker 2: the roster players. If he is active game one, if
- 13:38Speaker 2: he's on the fifty three men roster and on the
- 13:39Speaker 2: game day roster, uh in gay in week one, he
- 13:44Speaker 2: earns seventy five grand when you only make it one
- 13:47Speaker 2: point three one five million. Ay, it's a little bit
- 13:49Speaker 2: of cash. Not bad?
- 13:50Speaker 1: Oh yeah, absolutely all right, So good stuff there. That
- 13:54Speaker 1: is a lookod and boy, if the Eagles again this
- 13:57Speaker 1: is looking a little bit for it. If they wind
- 13:59Speaker 1: up hitting Darius Cooper and he can be your number
- 14:01Speaker 1: three receiver for you know, down the road or something
- 14:05Speaker 1: like that. That's another guy on a rookie free agent
- 14:08Speaker 1: deal who you can get production from. Theoretically, this is
- 14:11Speaker 1: just me hypothetically speaking, because he had such a good
- 14:15Speaker 1: camp last year and made the team. But if he
- 14:17Speaker 1: winds up being that kind of player, that's another cheap
- 14:21Speaker 1: cost efficient you know, labor that they get fun.
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah for this one this season, one point oh five million,
- 14:27Speaker 2: no guarantees and yeah, he's guarantees were absorbing in year
- 14:33Speaker 2: one and twenty twenty seven one point one two million.
- 14:35Speaker 2: It's it's an undrafted three year deal. This is the
- 14:37Speaker 2: way undrafteds are. Though obviously, if you've got some leverage
- 14:41Speaker 2: with out clubs, you can get a little bit of
- 14:42Speaker 2: guaranteed money. But so there's there's no guaranteed money left.
- 14:46Speaker 2: So yeah, they're they're they're super cheap in terms of
- 14:51Speaker 2: other clubs overall in terms of cash ode this season,
- 14:55Speaker 2: not a lot.
- 14:56Speaker 1: There, you go, unbelievable. All right, let's transition to tight ends. First.
- 15:02Speaker 1: If you're trying to take over an away stadium this season,
- 15:05Speaker 1: and we know Eagles fans love to do that, then

- 16:16Speaker 1: Cammed Inn Apothecary, top quality cannabis, great prices, and an
- 16:20Speaker 1: experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up. All right,
- 16:24Speaker 1: this seems like a fun conversation about Dallas Goddard because
- 16:27Speaker 1: you know last year at this time, well, no, last
- 16:29Speaker 1: year in the offseason, when we reported on the fact
- 16:32Speaker 1: that god it was probably not going to come back
- 16:34Speaker 1: unless it was under a pay cut. And that's what happened, right.
- 16:37Speaker 1: We all felt that that one year deal was going
- 16:38Speaker 1: to be the last year for Dallas Goddard. But then
- 16:41Speaker 1: a weird thing happened that you and I didn't predict,
- 16:43Speaker 1: was that they didn't draft last year his replacement. They
- 16:47Speaker 1: waited another year. They finally did it this year, so
- 16:51Speaker 1: Dallas it made sense to bring Dallas got her back
- 16:53Speaker 1: for another year. Now, if they're bringing him back next
- 16:56Speaker 1: year on a one year deal, that would be almost
- 16:58Speaker 1: crazy crazy, you know.
- 17:01Speaker 2: No, but you know what on that if he keeps,
- 17:03Speaker 2: say after the scheme, and he stays relatively healthy. Now,
- 17:10Speaker 2: you know, it's one thing in twenty eighteen they drafted Goddard.
- 17:13Speaker 2: We knew when it happened that zach Ertz's day's were numbered.
- 17:17Speaker 2: You're not going to pay two tenants. You're not doing that, Like,
- 17:20Speaker 2: it's not going to happen. And Zach eventually got traded
- 17:26Speaker 2: and Godard after that got his first contract extension. If
- 17:29Speaker 2: you recall he got it, I don't have in front
- 17:30Speaker 2: of me. I think it was November of that year.
- 17:32Speaker 2: It was after the trade deadline because they cleared out
- 17:34Speaker 2: Zach cash. So you look at this situation, Goddard one
- 17:38Speaker 2: year at seven million, as we noted back in February,
- 17:41Speaker 2: as we learned at Super Bowl, the word we got
- 17:43Speaker 2: was that there's a decent chance will come back because
- 17:49Speaker 2: it helps him with a salary cap for him to
- 17:50Speaker 2: be on the roster. They could keep him if they
- 17:53Speaker 2: could bring him back. Now, what was surprising to me
- 17:56Speaker 2: was only seven million, like he's making lesson he did
- 18:00Speaker 2: year was one year and ten million, which he took
- 18:01Speaker 2: a pay cut. He took over five million dollars pay
- 18:03Speaker 2: cut on a career year. It's kind of weird, but.
- 18:07Speaker 1: Yeah, the market wasn't great for tight end, right, it wasn't.
- 18:11Speaker 2: No David, I'm just gonna mention Joko got he's gonna
- 18:14Speaker 2: be the third string tight end for the Chargers for
- 18:15Speaker 2: goodness sake. It's crazy because it was a on your point,
- 18:19Speaker 2: it was a much better tight end class this year
- 18:21Speaker 2: than last year for the draft. That that absolutely played
- 18:25Speaker 2: into it. But they guaranteed seven million. And what we
- 18:28Speaker 2: were told is he really wanted to be and he
- 18:30Speaker 2: loves being here. He's really like living in Philly or
- 18:32Speaker 2: wherever the heck he lives. So yeah, exactly, But so
- 18:38Speaker 2: he'll make seven million. Now this is the one. We
- 18:41Speaker 2: need to talk about this one because I know people
- 18:43Speaker 2: are gonna because they have so many tight ends, how
- 18:46Speaker 2: could they bring gran Grant Calcultary back. I was surprised,
- 18:49Speaker 2: as everybody one year two million. They fully guaranteed it,
- 18:55Speaker 2: signing seven hundred thousand. That's a lot. Now, it doesn't
- 18:59Speaker 2: mean it's it's not guarantee he'll be on the roster.
- 19:02Speaker 2: So they'd have to eat seven hundred thousand if they
- 19:03Speaker 2: cut him. But the thing is if they use him
- 19:10Speaker 2: the right way, because we've outlined I don't know how
- 19:13Speaker 2: we did it. We showed the tape last year with
- 19:14Speaker 2: Greg co Sell. They asked Kapataro to block in line
- 19:17Speaker 2: way too much and the way they asked him to
- 19:18Speaker 2: do it, and Kim lat who just didn't work it
- 19:21Speaker 2: was just it didn't work. So if you could protect him,
- 19:24Speaker 2: he could help you and he could run. Johnny Munt
- 19:28Speaker 2: run year one point five million. He fully guaranteed it,
- 19:32Speaker 2: signing half of it seven hundred and fifty thousand. He's
- 19:35Speaker 2: going to be if he could, if he can move enough,
- 19:38Speaker 2: he will be here to block. That's why he's here.
- 19:41Speaker 2: He knows the offense man. You knows him for being
- 19:44Speaker 2: in Minnesota. Munt is only playing in the West Coast
- 19:47Speaker 2: office his entire career. It's kind of interesting, it's kind
- 19:50Speaker 2: of rare. So you see why he's he's here, and
- 19:53Speaker 2: then of course he sturs gets his four year rookie
- 19:55Speaker 2: deal Stone Smart did get a two hundred and twenty
- 19:59Speaker 2: five guarante. He did signing, but that that'll he's highly
- 20:03Speaker 2: unlikely to be on the ruster. That'll service a practice
- 20:05Speaker 2: squad guarantee more or less. Yeah, I don't see him
- 20:07Speaker 2: being on the roster. Here's the question, how many tight
- 20:10Speaker 2: ends could they keep with all these questions they have
- 20:12Speaker 2: on the roster If the certain positions they're way too heavy.
- 20:16Speaker 2: This is one of them.
- 20:17Speaker 1: It certainly is. I feel like they can get away.
- 20:20Speaker 1: You know, when we did our two early fifty three
- 20:22Speaker 1: man roster projections. I felt like they could get away
- 20:25Speaker 1: with Johnny Munt.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Do we do a show? I know, Andrew, do we
- 20:28Speaker 2: actually do one?
- 20:29Speaker 1: I think we just discussed it, but you know I
- 20:33Speaker 1: I think we both just kind of did our own
- 20:35Speaker 1: in our head and thought like, how does Johnny Munt
- 20:37Speaker 1: make the team if you're going to already keep stours
- 20:39Speaker 1: and got it and you're going with like ten linemen
- 20:41Speaker 1: and five quarterback or four quarterbacks. I mean, it just
- 20:44Speaker 1: didn't the numbers didn't work out. And you look at
- 20:47Speaker 1: a guy like Mutt and you say he was released.
- 20:49Speaker 1: It's not like they had to sign him in free
- 20:51Speaker 1: agency and outbit he was already signed because he was
- 20:54Speaker 1: cut by the Jag. So what's the market going to
- 20:57Speaker 1: be if he doesn't make the fifty three out of
- 20:59Speaker 1: camp and you bring him back to the practice squad
- 21:01Speaker 1: and elevate him and then maybe sign him to the
- 21:03Speaker 1: fifty three one yet some space? So I still think
- 21:06Speaker 1: that that's a that's that's a possibility. The question I
- 21:10Speaker 1: also think, Adam, looking at this, especially from a contract standpoint,
- 21:13Speaker 1: is to your point, if I could actually see that
- 21:16Speaker 1: you've took me into seeing a scenario where god it
- 21:18Speaker 1: could come back again for another year, but if he
- 21:21Speaker 1: did not, if he didn't, who are your your tight ends?
- 21:26Speaker 1: In twenty and twenty seven we begin with Stours and
- 21:30Speaker 1: then it's like who who's after that? Like you have
- 21:32Speaker 1: no idea, no got it?
- 21:36Speaker 2: One year deal, Krapata, one year deal, one year deals,
- 21:38Speaker 2: don't Smart, one year deal, Stowers. He's got a four
- 21:41Speaker 2: year rookie deal. Cam Latu. His contract expires after the season. Okay,
- 21:47Speaker 2: so an Aj Jenkins is back, but you know with
- 21:50Speaker 2: his situation, he's signed a one year deal. So yeah,
- 21:55Speaker 2: it's completely cleared out. Absolutely, there's a path for Goddard
- 21:58Speaker 2: to come back. Howie has it history of not walking
- 22:01Speaker 2: away from players at East drafted that are still playing well,
- 22:05Speaker 2: where some people say the hell are you going to
- 22:06Speaker 2: keep them? You need to turn the page. If the
- 22:09Speaker 2: guy could play, you know, thirty one years old, which
- 22:12Speaker 2: he turned to January. What if he if he's having
- 22:14Speaker 2: a good year and stays healthy, relatively healthy.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Right, and if the market once again, just for like
- 22:20Speaker 1: this past year, just isn't great for Tyda. I was
- 22:23Speaker 1: shocked by how bear the market get. I really thought
- 22:26Speaker 1: that the djoku was going to be among the first
- 22:29Speaker 1: like I was fifteen players aside. Did you say he
- 22:32Speaker 1: signed with the Chargers?
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yes, he signed, he signed, yeah he yeah he he. Uh.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Let me see if I have his contract in front
- 22:39Speaker 2: of me.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Did he actually get less money than Charlie Kohlar who
- 22:42Speaker 1: also signed with Yes.
- 22:44Speaker 2: You did. Check this out, Charlie, that's whole are amazing.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Three years, twenty six point three million.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I mean, the guy has like thirteen career catches. That's unbelievable.
- 22:57Speaker 2: They fully guaranteed the first two seasons. Okay, guaranteed seventeen
- 23:03Speaker 2: million over two years. The guy. The problem is he
- 23:07Speaker 2: he went to a team that already had isaa likely
- 23:11Speaker 2: you know and Mark Andrew yeah, right right, he wanted
- 23:14Speaker 2: to go to play. He's a good player, and there's
- 23:17Speaker 2: familiar there's some familiarity with their coaching staff and with
- 23:20Speaker 2: the Chargers.
- 23:21Speaker 1: Right and Gads dadson can't blocks and they want to
- 23:25Speaker 1: run back like McDaniel. They needed him.
- 23:28Speaker 2: But you know, that's that's.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Crazy, David and Joe.
- 23:31Speaker 2: They're still not paying a lot to total to the position.
- 23:33Speaker 2: And djok Wos signed one year, three just three million.
- 23:37Speaker 2: He signed really late. He signed actually after the draft
- 23:40Speaker 2: on May twelfth. Contract execution was May twelve, one year,
- 23:44Speaker 2: three million, and they only guaranteed eight hundred and fifty thousand.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Oh my, yeah, I mean, look at you're right, you know,
- 23:52Speaker 2: it was a week year for tight end. But getting
- 23:54Speaker 2: back to the Eagle situation, they're not paying a lot
- 23:57Speaker 2: the total of their tight ends, they're not paying a lot.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 24:01Speaker 2: You make a really good point. Past the season, it's
- 24:03Speaker 2: completely vacant other than obviously Eli Stowers, and they need
- 24:08Speaker 2: to protect him. He's a ways away from being an
- 24:10Speaker 2: accomplished blocker. If he ever gets there, they have to
- 24:13Speaker 2: protect him. They have to do that.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Yeah, I would agree, all right, really interesting stuff, you know,
- 24:20Speaker 1: And I do think that now now some of these
- 24:22Speaker 1: additions sort of make sense to me. I wonder how
- 24:24Speaker 1: he had an eye on two years down the road.
- 24:26Speaker 1: You know, can Stone Smart spend a year on the
- 24:29Speaker 1: practice squad and then become a number two and two
- 24:31Speaker 1: years or maybe even E. J. Jenkins, who they've been
- 24:34Speaker 1: developing for a couple of years. They're still gonna have
- 24:36Speaker 1: to add to this position.
- 24:39Speaker 2: They need why, yes, they also need to improve the
- 24:44Speaker 2: quality around stours. If god Or's not back they think
- 24:47Speaker 2: guys they need to develop, they just do it, you know.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I hope we'll see about lat too. We'll see about
- 24:55Speaker 2: lat too, whether he could develop, because last year he
- 24:58Speaker 2: just was not giving a a good chance. But very
- 25:02Speaker 2: interesting position. But one thing we've learned with great coaching
- 25:07Speaker 2: watching Kyle Shanahan the number he did on the Eagles
- 25:10Speaker 2: in the playoffs, you don't have to be very talented
- 25:12Speaker 2: if you're a great schemer and designer. What he did
- 25:15Speaker 2: to Fangio, I mean, I know VIC wasn't happy with
- 25:17Speaker 2: the tackling and they were terrible against the Niners offense.
- 25:21Speaker 2: I mean what what Juwan Jennings and Darius excuse me,
- 25:24Speaker 2: DeMarcus Robinson did to them was insane.
- 25:26Speaker 1: And Kyle by the way forty four yards or something
- 25:31Speaker 1: like that. Yeah, I think he had his most tied
- 25:34Speaker 1: for his most catches in the season in that game.
- 25:36Speaker 2: So that's a great scheming. Design beats anything. You can
- 25:39Speaker 2: beat any great defense and a great schemer like Vic
- 25:44Speaker 2: who should go in the coaching Hall of Fame. But anyway, yeah,
- 25:48Speaker 2: we'll see what happens. This is gonna be a fun
- 25:49Speaker 2: offense to track and can someone do a little bit
- 25:54Speaker 2: better than we think like Hollywood Brown. Well, very interesting.
- 25:57Speaker 2: See what his role is going to be?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Same here, all right, So that's a look at our
- 26:01Speaker 1: pass catchers. The big takeaway is Davonte Smith time to
- 26:04Speaker 1: pay the reaper. The Raaper's coming. Should get a big contract.
- 26:08Speaker 1: It should be this year, and we'll see how long
- 26:10Speaker 1: it takes for the Eagles to get that done. In
- 26:12Speaker 1: the next episode, we'll go through the offensive lineman. We'll
- 26:16Speaker 1: go through interior offensive linemen and tackles, all that stuff
- 26:19Speaker 1: and their kind of which will be very interesting because
- 26:22Speaker 1: they've got some guys on team friendly contracts, some aging
- 26:25Speaker 1: guys and then a lot of young guys. So well,
- 26:28Speaker 1: that'll be a fun one. That's gonna do it for
- 26:30Speaker 1: this episode of Inside the Birds, the Leading Podcast and
- 26:32Speaker 1: Eagles Intel, And as always, we thank you for flying
