2:46
Welcome to the show, Dave. Happy West Virginia Day in West Virginia
2:49
did all right. So here's what I'm gonna do, because I'll say this,
2:52
Hoppy is gonna, as he always does on talk line, on West
2:55
Virginia Day, is going to celebrate the state, have different people on to
2:59
talk about their experience at West Virginia. You are not a West Virginian by
3:02
birth, I am, But as the old saying goes, you're by choice,
3:07
and you got here as quickly as you could. That's right, all
3:09
right. And you are from originally tell us where you're from. Originally Colorado?
3:13
Gotlorado, all right? So what is it that led you to West
3:15
Virginia other than just the job at Bridge? Because jobs are one thing,
3:19
okay, but people don't work twenty four hours a day, it seems like
3:23
it sometimes when people don't work twenty four hours a day, there's got to
3:27
be lifestyle, there's got to be all these other things. What is it
3:30
that appealed to West Virginia about doctor Casey Sax? Well, you know,
3:34
I actually I moved to West Virginia, and then I moved away to go
3:38
to work in Washington, d C. And I moved back to West Virginia.
3:40
So the more interesting question is why do you move back to West Virgia.
3:44
Okay, that's a very good question. Yeah, And I moved back
3:46
because it's a wonderful state. It's such a beautiful place. There's so much
3:51
going on here. I'm constantly amazed by my students and community and just really
3:55
believe in helping to make this place better. And when you say it's a
4:00
beautiful state, you're from Colorado, I am, I know beautiful states.
4:03
Yeah, what is so beautiful about West Virginia to you? So? I
4:06
love deciduous trees. I'm frequently found out in the forest hiking with my dogs.
4:12
I think just the biodiversity here is incredible. I'd never seen ghost plants
4:17
before. I had never seen I mean, I see bears in the woods.
4:21
It's just it's really fun. Well, loves are not on your front
4:25
porch, It's okay, I guess right, they're not eating the trash,
4:27
They're in the perfect spot. Well, you know, I'm gonna get my
4:30
opinions on West Virginia a little bit later on too. But you know,
4:33
a lot of us have had opportunities to go other places and opted to stay
4:38
here. And you're somebody who's not from here that came here and then moved
4:41
away and then came back. So that may be the most unique story we
4:45
hear all day. Well, nice on the air. When I texted you
4:47
yesterday, doctor and I asked you about what you want to talk about today,
4:51
you said, Goldman sachs Now, I have to admit I wasn't quite
4:56
prepared for that. Explain to me the correlation between Bridge Valley and Goldman Sachs.
5:00
So Goldman Sachs has an initiative that's called ten Thousand Small Businesses. They
5:04
saw that there's not a place where small business owners can get the training they
5:10
need to grow their businesses. That that sort of a gap in the marketplace.
5:14
So they created a training that they've rolled out to great, big markets
5:16
all over the country and actually they've served about fifteen thousand small businesses so far.
5:21
And they decided they really wanted to do this in rural communities, so
5:25
they came to West Virginia. They looked at what was going on here and
5:29
they picked Bridge Valley and they said, we want to deliver this training out
5:31
of Bridge Valley for free two small business owners from anywhere in West Virginia that
5:36
want to come in and do it. It's really about growing small businesses in
5:40
rural communities. So we're so excited about it and hope that small business owners
5:45
who are listening today decide to sign up for this incredible free opportunity. What
5:48
kind of things would go on in the training for them so they'll learn things
5:51
about finance, they're looking at revenue streams. The other small business owners who
5:57
have done it have seen increases in their revenue. They've hired new employees,
6:00
they've created more jobs. They're trying to figure out how do we help you
6:03
grow your business. So there's a business coach. There's nine modules. The
6:09
first couple of days are face to face, and then there's a set of
6:12
learning that are once a week online, and then at the very end there's
6:15
a face to face and it's about helping small business owners know each other and
6:20
use each other's businesses. One of the things they've seen in other cohorts is
6:24
they start using each other for their supply chain issues. Just all kinds of
6:29
things to help grow our small business pipeline right here in West Virginia. What
6:31
kinds of small businesses are there any particular types they'd be looking at, or
6:35
maybe in your role as college president of Bridge Valley, what do you see
6:41
as a need for small business Because I know sometimes you need guys work with
6:45
the toyotas and it's all wonderful, but small business is the lifeblood of America,
6:49
of the American economy. So kind of small businesses are we looking at?
6:51
Are we talking about it. I mean, it really could be anything.
6:54
Goldman's criteria is that the business has revenue over seventy five thousand dollars in
6:59
the most recent fiscal year, that the person who takes the classes the small
7:02
business owner or co owner, that they've been in business for at least two
7:06
years, and that they have at least two employees. And the two employees
7:10
counts the business owner and someone else, and so that leaves the field wide
7:14
open. I know, I've talked to a man who owns a small tech
7:16
firm. They do a lot of computer support for families. They're a very
7:19
small, family run business. They're signing up, they've been interested. I
7:24
talk to a woman who owns a salon. She has a couple of employees
7:28
and is trying to figure out how do you grow revenue and what kind of
7:30
inventory do I need and what does this look like? So she's signing up.
7:33
I mean, it's really a huge spectrum of what's possible, and really
7:38
we're excited to welcome anyone interested in So it's kind of through that out there
7:42
to small businesses. If there're small businesses that are listening right now, the
7:46
owners, managers, whatever, what do they need to do get involved in
7:48
this, so we have links to sign up on our website. It's a
7:53
very short application and it's the ten thousand Small Businesses Initiative Bridge Valley. Goldman
7:59
Sachs would get you all in the right place talking again with doctor Casey Sachs

8:13
So time wise, the switch gears here. What is happening now at
8:18
Bridge Valley to get ready for the upcoming I guess fall semester. Yeah,
8:22
So every week we're still doing fafts so Fridays, trying to help families and
8:26
students make sure they know how to fill out financial aid forms. One of
8:28
the really interesting things that we've seen this semester is that we've had huge numbers
8:35
of students transfer into Bridge Valley from four year institutions. And I think from
8:39
the students I've talked to us for a couple of reasons, and one of
8:41
them's financial aid. Bridge Valley's a lot more affordable than four year institutions are
8:46
credits all transfer and so students because FAFSO has been so hairy this year,
8:52
they've said, I'll just go to Bridge Valley for a year and then make
8:56
other choices and see what it is I want to do. So we're excited
8:58
about that and excited that students are choosing to live right here in Charleston and
9:03
go to school at their communities college. We're happy to have folks when these
9:07
when these students are coming in where primarily are they coming from, just I
9:11
guess to all different institutions of higher learning when they transfer into it. For
9:15
you, we see the biggest numbers who come to us from WVU and Marshall,
9:18
But that's because they're the biggest instance. Sure, yeah, yeah,
9:22
And sometimes you know, it's not necessarily reflection on those on those institutions of
9:26
higher learning. I mean, you know, everybody's got different personalities. They
9:28
go away and they think, well, maybe this isn't for me. I
9:31
don't like living in these areas, or maybe something's happened at home, they
9:33
got a family situation. It's not necessarily a negative reflection on WVU, and
9:39
in fact, we transfer just as many students back out to those institutions every
9:43
year, so we're also excited to be able to do that. That students
9:46
often start at Bridge Valley and then decide, Gosh, I want to move
9:50
to Huntington and have a different experience, and that's wonderful. I think what's
9:52
great about it is that you can go back and forth, and that it
9:56
is so flexible, and and that because Bridge Valleys credits are transferable, it
10:01
means students' lives can change and they can come home for a family issue or
10:05
make other choices. And we're glad that we can serve them that way and
10:07
be flexible that well. So no issues at all with things transferring. Their
10:11
records are I mean, classes they've taken. Everything's good, right. It's
10:15
so every school sets their own graduation criteria, So if you know where you're
10:18
going to transfer, we always want to start with let's look at that institution's
10:22
graduation requirements, because we don't want you to take things twice, so we
10:26
want to make sure we advise you into the classes that are required for the
10:28
institution that you're planning to go to. Let's talk about the connections to the
10:31
business community Bridge Valley. It's something that we're always big on. I mentioned
10:35
the relationship that you have with some of the larger employers and some of the
10:39
smaller ones too here in the Kanawa Valley and surrounding areas. So what news
10:43
can you report to us there? So we're always excited to work with different
10:48
employers for various activities, exactly like what you're saying. But one of the
10:50
programs that we're especially proud of that I like to make sure to talk about
10:54
is called Learn and Earn, And so what it is is it's a wage
10:58
match for employers who are willing to take a student out of one of our
11:01
programs and give them a chance, because we see that the best employment opportunities
11:05
happen for our students if they've had real work experience. So, for example,
11:09
you might be in our accounting program, but if you've never worked in
11:13
an accounting firm or in a bookkeeping capacity or any kind of accounting space,
11:16
it's much harder for you to get a job. And so what we try
11:20
and do is place our students who are in every single program with employers who
11:24
want those particular skills and to incentivize it for employers will match wages with them.
11:30
So if you needed a student who was in accounting, we'd work through
11:33
the details of a learn and earn And let's just say you say, I'm
11:37
going to pay my accounting student twenty dollars an hour. So you pay them
11:41
twenty dollars an hour, and at the end of each pay period, you
11:43
send us the receipts, the payroll proof that you paid the student twenty dollars
11:46
an hour, and will reimburse you, as the business owner, ten dollars
11:50
an hour. So it decreases your risk in being able to take someone who's
11:54
not fully trained, and it gives our students a really great authentic opportunity.
11:58
I mean so like it's a wonderful thing for businesses because the one thing that
12:01
I get doctor Saxon talking to business owners here in the area, and this
12:05
this is problem nationwide, is we can't get people. Yes, we cannot
12:09
get people to work. It's challenging and it's also hard because you are taking
12:13
a risk in hiring a student. And so all of the community colleges in
12:16
West Virginia actually participate in this program because we're really committed to helping our students
12:20
get those work based learning experiences. Give us the website again for Bridge Valley
12:24
Bridge Valley dot edu. All right, well, always a pleasure to have
12:30
you, to have you on the show, and we'll be talking to you
12:33
and some of your co workers in the future. So thanks a lot,

16:17
will tell you that we get Senator Joe Manchin coming up on the show a
16:19
little bit later on. I'm very interested in talking to Senator Mansion about a
16:23
number of things. There has been some information or some things in the news
16:27
about bump stocks, and I don't pretend to be the the gun expert that,
16:33
let's say it, Chris Lawrence is or someone like that. However,
16:37
the Senator has gone on and this is a bipartisan effort that he's had to
16:45
ban bump stocks, and Hopies talked about this in detail. So I'm interested
16:51
to get Senator Mansion's take on that as well, and some of the things
16:53
that are going And of course, you know, and if the Senator's office
16:56
is listening right now, this may keep him from coning in. You know,
17:00
I'm going to ask you big questions, big questions about what are you
17:03
doing for the future, if anything. So we'll get to Senator Mansion about

that. Come it up a little bit later on Bigley Pigli Wiggly Hotline three

Indeed it is. And uh, you know, I was kind of
17:23
good to save this for the for the end of the show. But maybe
17:26
I'll go ahead and since we're trying to see where Rusty Web is, maybe
17:29
well maybe possibly you can get him on the phone or or or not at
17:33
all. But your thoughts on West Virginia. And I know that's a very
17:38
very vague statement. I am someone. I'll start with myself. I am
17:45
someone, as you well know, a native West Virginia, from southern West
17:48
Virginia. Been in the Canau Valley for ten years now, love it,
17:52
love it here, loved it in southern West Virginia where I'm from in Logan
17:57
County. I have had opportunities to work and live in other areas, but
18:06
I've chosen to be here. And one of the things in talking to a
18:11
lot of political figures that I talked to on a regular basis on the show,
18:15
I talk about the need of getting the need of getting quality people to
18:23
want to stay in West Virginia. Talking about our young people. You know,
18:30
I'm a kid of the eighties, as you well know, graduated high
18:32
school nineteen eighty eight, and so many of the people of my generation left
18:38
West Virginia at the time. The economy. West Virginia's economy has a tendency
18:44
to sometimes do the opposite of what the nation's economy is doing. The coal
18:49
mining industry was booming when I graduated high school nineteen eighty eight, and I
18:55
had friends of mine who went into the coal mines. I mean literally a
19:00
week or so or started the process with the training and whatever a week or
19:03
so after graduating high school and continue to work in the coal industry in one
19:10
way or the other. Not necessarily in the minds all of them. But
19:12
some were truck drivers and some were some of the ancillary industries. But a
19:18
lot of people of my generation did did leave. They went to the hot
19:22
During my dad's generation, everybody went to Columbus, or everybody went to Detroit,
19:26
or everybody you know, went to some of those areas. My generation
19:30
was more North Carolina. I joked. I was on the planning committee for
19:33
my ten year high school reunion, and I said, we could have had
19:37
this high school reunion in Charlotte because that's where everybody seemed to want to be,
19:41
or everybody was at that time. But getting back to my original point
19:48
is, you've when I talk to these political people, I say, what
19:51
is it that we need to do to make West Virginians want to stay West
19:57
Virginians and not to move off to wherever. And when I talk to younger
20:04
people, and which is not often, but I, you know, frequently,
20:07
will talk to young people on the show and ask them, you know,
20:11
why why are you still here? And I think it's it's interesting how
20:19
the answers have changed over the years, because again, with my generation,
20:23
it was jobs. It was it was all about jobs. But it seems
20:27
like with a younger generation it tends to be more about experiences. And they
20:32
all mention the great outdoors. And I know people that have moved to West
20:37
Virginia specifically for they came here to Whitewater raft, they came here for the
20:42
bike trails, they came here to ski or whatever, and they liked it
20:45
here and they liked the people here. So I guess the question that I'm
20:48
going to ask to you, and you can call me Bigley Biggily Wiggily hotline
20:52
is three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight, or the text
20:55
line for Fruth is three zero four nine three five five zero zero eight.
20:59
What is it that makes you stay in West Virginia? Now, if you're
21:03
somebody because of the age of the internets that we have now, a majority
21:11
of our listeners to this show and other programming on this station and our other
21:15
stations into building aren't listening on a terrestrial radio anymore. They're listening online.
21:19
They're listening on the apps or whatever. I had a regular texture from Florida
21:23
every day. I've got another one from Indiana that has told me that they're
21:27
listening. If you're living out of state, I'm gonna go take the negative
21:32
with the positive here. If you're somebody who's living out of state, what
21:36
is it about that state that makes you want to stay there as opposed to
21:41
coming home to West Virginia. I have said, as I talked to doctor
21:45
Sachs, I said, you know, look, the jobs are one thing,
21:48
but people don't work. There's got to be more than jobs, especially
21:52
with the younger generation. It's not just about employment. A person only works
21:57
so many hours a day. So what is it that makes you either want
22:06
to stay in West Virginia or that makes you happy that you left either one?
22:11
And what could we do to try to get you to come back to
22:15
West Virginia. I have known a number of people, some of my generations,
22:19
maybe some of a little bit older, that have said that they're out
22:22
of state, they're working. I've got a very very good friend, my
22:26
best friend from high school, lives in Carmel, Indiana, and she and
22:30
her husband have great jobs up there. They've been gone from West Virginia for
22:34
five six years so, and she and her husband have both told me that
22:41
as soon as they retire, they cannot wait to come back to West Virginia.
22:48
And that's an interesting answer to me. Now, does that mean that
22:52
they can't get the gainful employment because they're both my age, which means they're
22:56
old, you know, they're in their mid fifties. That can they not
23:00
get the game of employment. That's why they left was because of employment opportunities.
23:03
They had much more at that time in Indiana than what they do here
23:08
or what they had here at that time. But as soon as they retire,
23:14
they can't wait to come back to West Virginia. And one of the
23:17
things that they talk about with West Virginia is the friendliness of the people.
23:22
My friends lived, as I said, in Carmel, Indiana, which is
23:23
a very well to do city. It's consistently ranked as one of the top
23:30
ten cities in America to live in, with the schools and low crime rate
23:33
and all the stuff. But they said they don't know their neighbors, They
23:38
have no idea they see them. My friend said, you know, my
23:44
friend Rich lives up there, says when he moved in, he just kind
23:47
of looked across the street and waded his neighbor, and his neighbor just looked
23:49
at him went back in the house. Maybe that's because he knew he was
23:52
from West Virginia, you know, maybe he saw the West Virginia flag and
23:55
said, okay, these people are going to have a Chevy Silverado up on
23:57
blocks within the first a couple of hours. But the friendliness is not there
24:04
from what I hear from a lot of people. But you know, kind
24:10
of broad questions, as I said, what is it that makes you love
24:12
West Virginia? What is that makes you want to stay in West Virginia if
24:18
you do want to stay in West Virginia, And what is it that makes
24:21
you want to get the heck out of West Virginia? And if you did,
24:23
would you ever consider coming back? Pigli Wiggly Hotline three zero four three

25:06
Today. Text says Happy West Virginia Day, Dave. I will never forget
25:11
when the great John F. Kennedy said, the people of West Virginia aren't
25:15
very pretty, but the mountain sure are, or something like that. I
25:18
don't think that was the exact quote text. I think the the uh,
25:23
I think the text was more or the not the text. I think the
25:26
quote was more something like the he came he was campaigning in West Virginia.
25:32
As the story goes, and I think I'm correct on this he was campaigning
25:33
in West Virginia, uh and and he made a statement. It was pouring
25:38
down rain in West Virginia, and he made the statement, the sun may
25:42
not always shine in West Virginia, but the people always do. That was
25:48
the actual statement that was made from John Kennedy. And and you know,
25:53
John Kennedy was one that came here and seemed to fall in love with West
25:59
Virginia. And obviously we know how that story ended and how he had to
26:04
you know, he did not get to complete his presidency, but he was
26:08
somebody I think that loved West Virginia. And with all of the changes that
26:14
we've seen politically in West Virginia, the Republicans, you know, take over
26:18
pretty much in twenty fourteen with a super majority which became a super duper majority,
26:22
which after this fall I think is going to be a super super super
26:25
super duper majority. Does that change your opinion of West Virginia in any way?
26:34
Are you? Are you serious? Right now, my producer Dale Cooper
26:38
is telling me that Joe Manchin, Senator Manchin just canceled on the show today.
26:45
I'm over to am I actually am I actually here? I'm over to
26:49
today Rusty Web canceled and Joe Mantionin canceled. Well, there goes the whole
26:56
show right there. Let me see, let me knock out a couple of
27:00
texts here, because apparently That's what I'm going to be doing for the rest
27:03
of the show. Tex says, I love my hometown in Ohio that has
27:10
more people than West Virginia has total but literally wasting an hour of my life
27:15
as traffic lights every day is soul crushing. I'm a male and a mile
27:22
sorry. I'm a mile from work in an amazing capital city the size of
27:26
a typical suburb, and can get from one side of town to the other
27:30
in ten minutes and the rest of the valley in a half hour. I'm
27:33
just an hour away from some of the most beautiful scenery in state and national
27:37
parks with great skiing, hiking, and whitewater rafting a day's drive from any
27:42
place on the East coast to the Mississippi River. I love my hometown.
27:49
See they started out to Texas saying I live my hometown. That's what confused
27:52
me. What they said was I love my hometown. I love my hometown
27:56
in Ohio, and it has more people in West Virginia. But I think
27:59
they were saying that they like that, they that they love being here,
28:03
and that's that's one of the things that you hear a lot, and especially
28:07
from the people who just kind of showed up at West Virginia. All Right,
28:11
we gotta gotta call, I think. All right, let's go to
28:15
the phones. Good morning, you're on the air. Good morning morning,
28:18
Happy West Virginia Day, Happy West Virginia Day. What can we do for
28:22
you? Well, I'm just calling to tell you why I love West Virginia.
28:25
Go right ahead and staying here. West Virginia is America's best small town.
28:30
And the people are the greatest, okay, And it's one of the
28:34
most beautiful places. And when you were talking about the Republican takeover and all
28:37
of that, I worked as a lobbyist and I also held electric office,
28:44
and so I was you know, I'm one of your more liberal listeners,
28:47
Okay, I as I know, and I have friends across the aisle and
28:52
across the spectrum, and I just think that West Virginia is a place where
28:56
we try to focus on our commonalities and really will do what we can to
29:03
help each other. And that's why I love it. Can I ask you
29:07
some personal questions? Are you from West Virginia originally? Yes, all right,
29:11
I mean from this area, not that it matters, but are you
29:14
from the Kenaw Valley area? So? I was born in Charleston, And
29:18
if you want to get real personal, my parents divorced and I grew up
29:22
in a suburb of Columbus, Okay, So I spent summers here and you
29:27
know, Christmas time here, and then I moved back in the early nineties.
29:33
What is it that we need to do to have more stories like yours?
29:40
What can we do as well? I mean you said that you tend
29:42
to be a little bit more on the liberal side, and that's okay.
29:47
What is it that we need to do to attract more people not only to
29:49
come to West Virginia, but what do we need to do to get people
29:55
to want to stay in West Virginia? Because to me, that is as
29:57
big a problem is not getting people to want to move here, is trying
30:02
to get our young people when they graduate high school and they go away to
30:04
college or whatever or whatever it is they decide to do post high school,
30:08
is to get them to want to stay here. What can we do to
30:11
get young people here. I really think that we need to diversify our economy.
30:15
I mean, I think for a long time to regardless of what your
30:18
opinion is about fossil fuels, for a long time, I think West Virginia
30:23
was fairly beholden to coal and it was a little bit of a mono economy.
30:29
And so I think that that, you know, that can have an
30:33
impact on what other jobs are coming here. I think now as we begin
30:37
to transition our electric sector into you know, different fuels, we have an
30:44
opportunity to create jobs. And I think that the Development Office you know,
30:49
is doing that. You see different programs under the IRA to bring clean energy
30:56
here. But I think despite that, I think also working on remote work
31:03
jobs, service jobs, that kind of thing, highlighting our natural resources,
31:07
which I think the Tourism Office does well, and getting young people who are
31:14
interested in you know, that kind of small town quality that we have here.
31:18
It's a great place to raise a family, there's plenty to do.
31:22
There's plenty to do in Charleston, and then you know, you go out
31:26
to the National Forest and the National Park. So we've got it all as
31:33
far as I'm concerned, And you know, how do we get that message
31:36
out, Well, I appreciate you you bailing me out and calling here this
31:40
morning. Thanks a lot. I know, I'm so sorry that everyone.
31:44
Yeah, I'm beginning to think, you know, I mean, I know,
31:45
I'll put the odorant on this morning, so it can't be that.
31:48
So I was beginning to wonder very interesting comments from you, and I appreciate
31:52

37:01
welcome to the show, Senator Grady, Are okay? All right? Are
37:08
you there? I'm here, okay, I got you. How you doing.
37:13
I'm doing good. I was checking my emails this morning as I often
37:15
do, and listen to your show, and heard you say that you needed
37:19
some time the worse I send out, hold on, that's not what I
37:22
said. I didn't say it that way. I just said I had two
37:25
guests in a road that cancel. But that's okay because sometimes it, you
37:29
know, after thirty six years, it gives the old guy an opportunity,
37:31
an opportunity to just riff a little bit and throw it out there and go
37:34
out and you know, and walk the tightrope a little bit. But you
37:37
offered, but you offered a called up, so I'm not gonna I'm gonna
37:39
talk to you. Now, you are someone who, as I said,
37:44
among your other jobs, it is your job to try to get people to
37:46
want to come to West Virginia or get our people to stay here. What
37:50
is the selling point to West Virginia for you? You're a native West Virginia,
37:53
right, yes, absolutely, you know. I've lived in Mason County
37:57
my whole life, and I love West Virginia and so you know, my
38:01
husband and our kids, we like to travel, and so often when I
38:05
talk to people outside of this state, we talk a lot that you know,
38:09
a lot of people still don't know or don't recall that West Virginia is
38:15
a separate from Virginia. Yes, yes, So I often get the question,
38:20
well, how close how close do you live close to Virginia Beach?
38:22
You know? Known, so then it gives me that opportunity, or do
38:24
you live close to Richmond? So I always take that opportunity to tell them
38:30
about West Virginia and let them know the things that we have to do.
38:34
And I like to generally talk a lot about our outdoor activities and then also
38:38
you know, our beautiful state parks. I try to get them to come
38:40
to visit, and I always tell them, you know, if you come
38:43
to visit West Virginia once, you'll come back and then you'll want to move
38:45
here because our people are people, I think is the selling point. So
38:49
we have that of the friendliest people. I agree with that, and that
38:52
was kind of the story that I told earlier about my friends who live in
38:53
Indiana. I think that the people and I know that's that's such a corny
38:59
state to say and so cliche to say, well, it's the people of
39:01
West Virginia, but by god, it's right in my opinion, I think
39:06
it's right on yes. And every time you know, I talk to people
39:08
that come from out of state that come either whether whether they come to talk
39:12
to the legislature, they just you know, I run into them. That's
39:15
what people from out outside of West Virginia say, they really do. And
39:19
I know it sounds corny. I agree with you, David does, because
39:21
we hear that all the time. But that's what they tell me, you
39:23
know, they say, you know, the people here are just so friendly
39:27
and nice everybody, and I think that's really our greatest asset and that to
39:31
get people to come here. So you know, I've never been one of
39:34
those people, even as a teenager that always thought, you know, I
39:37
want to grow up and move away from here. I've never I've never felt
39:39
that way. I've always felt really appreciative of everything West Virginia has to offer.
39:44
And I have never wanted to leave and never want to leave, and
39:46
hope my children feel the same way. Let's talk about the work of the
39:50
legislature as somebody you know, as I said, I mentioned earlier that the
39:53
Republicans you know, pretty much to go over in twenty fourteen. It became
39:57
a super majority, found out a super duper majority. No indication that that's
40:00
going to change anytime soon. What have you folks under and I know you've
40:04
just been there a few years of that. What have you folks done under
40:07
the dome that you think makes West Virginia a more attractive place for people?
40:12
Well, you know, we try to focus on things that focus a lot
40:15
on families and personal freedoms, and so, you know, I think those
40:19
are really important to people. And you know, being this is I'm finishing
40:22
up my first term. This is an election year for me, and so
40:27
I really really like to try to talk to people and let them know that,
40:30
you know, when I went in Dave. When I went into legislature,
40:32
I went in not knowing completely what I was getting myself into. Honestly,
40:37
you know, the people that I would work with, who I could
40:40
trust, what I could do. And I was pleasantly surprised because you have
40:45
this mindset when you're outside of politics of how quote unquote politicians are, you
40:50
know, power hungry, and all these different words come to mind. And
40:52
when I got there, I was really shocked and surprised and pleased that everybody
40:57
that I work with in the Senate seems to have the best interest of the
41:00
people of West Virginia in mind. You know, they want to do things
41:04
for the right reasons. And I'm really really proud of that, is that
41:07
everybody, even though we might have different views or different ideas, the thirty
41:10
four members of the Senate typically work together and try to make sure that we
41:15
accomplish something for West Virginia as a whole, and we don't work against each
41:20
other. And I think, you know, that is something everybody can be
41:22
proud of. Senator Amian, the old Grady, It's always a pleasure to
41:24
have you on the show, and I hope that when you are traveling,
41:29
you and your husband and your family. And people say ask you. If
41:31
you say if they ask you, are you close to Virginia Beach or Richmond
41:34
or Roanoke, you say no, I'm closer to downtown Leon, West,
41:37
Virginia. I am. That's absolutely right. All right, Senator, we'll

43:07
and it's clean. There's not trash everywhere, says a texture. Let's go
43:13
to the phones, so let's talk to Richard. You're on the show,
43:15
Richard. Good morning, Hey Dave, this is rich Lindsay, how you
43:17
doing. Okay, I've got all the political folks listening today. You had
43:22
me follow Senator Grady. That's a hard one. Well it just well,
43:25
you were supposed to be that was supposed to be Joe Manchin. That was
43:29
oh all right, I mean you're you're with good folks today, all right,
43:32
Judge Richard lindsay, Judge to be right, Yeah, Judge elect,
43:37
I saw you at Fonma the Donal a couple of weeks ago, and I
43:39
wondered, I told you then, I said, why are you not practicing
43:43
wearing the road like out in public? Well, it's kind of hot out.
43:49
Nothing says you have to wear anything under it. I'm just saying,
43:51
all right, what can we do? What can we do for you,
43:52
sir oh I was just calling in, you know, I just hearing the
43:55
good conversations and follow up with what people have already said, you know,
44:00
as far as West Virginia, and the best part about it it is our
44:04
people. I mean, you know it. I love my neighborhood. I
44:07
live on the East End. I've got neighbors that we all help each other
44:12
out, take out the trash or shovel of snow or or or you know,
44:16
you know, broom the walkway or whatever. So we're all looking out
44:19
for each other. And then, as you know, I love the campaign.
44:22
I love meeting people. And I can't tell you how many times I've
44:27
had people come in. I knock on their door and they say, well,
44:29
come on in, let's talk. They I've had folks fro potatoes for
44:32
me and sit down and talk about issues and whatnot. So, you know,
44:37
just to kind of follow up on what Centeria Grady said, our people
44:39
are our greatest. And then on top of that, you have here locally
44:44
in Knall County, just great leadership You've got, you know, Mary Goodwin
44:47
and Mayor Somemmrs and Clinton and a Mary case Bolton Nitro and Mary Elliott and
44:52
Dunbar and they and Mayor James and Saint Albans and you there. There's not
44:57
a weekend during the nice warm months where there is something to do here in
45:00
the area. I mean, there's so many things going on. It's specific,
45:04
and I know it's not this way all over the sate of West Virginia,
45:07
but there's so many things going on in Charleston on a regular basis in
45:09
the entire Kanawa Valley that I can't mention them all. I mean literally I
45:13
can't. And I have people that call up and say, well, we'd
45:15
like to come on and talk about this and about that. You know,
45:17
we have the Taco Festival which starts today in South Charles that's right up your
45:22
alley. We got that going on. We got wine and jazz. This
45:24
weekend, we got live on the levee. We got festival that's continuing.
45:27
There's a big, big, major concert, all day concert festival, music
45:31
festival going on in Putdam County over at Valley Park this weekend. And I
45:36
haven't even had a chance to talk about that, but I agree with you
45:37
there there's a lot of stuff going on. Hey a judge, it's always
45:42
good to have you on the show man. I appreciate you listening. Thanks
45:45
a lot, Thank you, Dave. Happy West Virginia Day to West Virginia

46:39
Black friends I brought back with me when visiting were not treated well here.
46:43
I've never been singled out for being a West Virginian. At the five
46:45
states, three counties and two continents where I've lived, the stereotype trolling exists,
46:51
but we are ultra sensitive and love this fantasy. This is the only
46:54
place where people are nice. Nice people exist everywhere, says a text to
47:00
exercise. It seems like young people stay in West Virginia that go to trade
47:02
school, but leave that go to college. Mountaineers enough said, says a
47:09
texture Texas says, just look at those who chose to came here, some
47:13
lived here. Leslie Nielson bobbed in for Dean Kine. They all have the
47:16
love of our people. That's who West Virginia is gonna take a break.

50:07
Dave, I've left West Virginia three times to come back three times. I
50:12
think it's a good thing for kids to get away from home and experience the
50:15
world. It creates a well rounded adult. West Virginia is beautiful, the
50:17
people are wonderful, and pace of life is amazing. The stuff we need
50:22
to work on that will bring those kids home our job opportunities, improved infrastructure,
50:25
sell internet coverage, to reduce extreme politics. We went from extreme left
50:30
to extreme right. Most people are somewhere in between, healthcare access. I
50:35
think we are really making strides towards some of those things. Some of them
50:38
we seem to be moving backwards as a texture. The only thing I would
50:42
disagree with on that is I don't know that West Virginia was ever extreme left.
50:45
Yes we were a Democrat state, but we were still always always a
50:50
conservative state. But good points made by the texture. Uh Texas, Dave,
50:54
I have roots in West Virginia and the other Virginia. After my military
50:59
service, I was on the fence which states to return to to make a
51:01
permanent home or broke. The time for me was West Virginia State University.
51:06
They were a great choice for a non traditional college student in my mid twenties.
51:09
At the time, WVSU was and is a great education right for veterans.
51:15
Go Yellowjackets. All right, good point. I'm working to get doctor
51:17
Eric Cage from Western New State on the show one day next week. As
51:22
you know, they just made a major announcement about their agriculture school there,
51:25
So I was in contact with those folks yesterday about possibly getting doctor Cage,
51:30
who's a frequent guest on the show, coming up one day next week.
51:34
Texas, Dave, I have lived here all my life and raised five kids.
51:37
The only complaint I have is the laws and agenda that are now passed
51:40
by the legislature do not appeal to most young people, including my kids.
51:45
The discrimination and uses of public education funds for private institutions, and many other
51:49
things imposed by them by this current legislature does not appeal to them. Three
51:53
Gone, says the text Texas. So it's the biggest problem with this state
51:57
is our closed minded conservative majority voters who would let a New Jersey trump boot
52:01
liquor over a real West Virginian. It's pathetic. Would have been nice to
52:06
have the other West Virginia gubernatorial candidates Chris Miller, Moore Capitol, Macwarner and
52:09
and Governor Justice too to show they actually are by a partisan and get behind
52:14
Steve Williams in his bid for governor. He's a great guy, experienced and
52:20
is a real West Virginian. Morrissey is no Jay Rockefeller says a texta Texas
52:24
to Dave. Can we have the Columbus caller lady a regular show contributor.
52:29
I'll just listen every day. Well, whoever you are, you got a
52:31
fan there, tex says Our legislator kind of got thrown into the fire this
52:36
morning because we had two guests that we want to cancel, one that just
52:38
didn't show up. So there you go. So ants Wine a great job.
52:40
Appreciate you a young fellow. That's how you near getting old. And
52:44
you say, young fellow, just sell you a young whipper snapper. Hobby's
