- 1:37Speaker 1: first things first, you know what I'm saying. We love
- 1:39Speaker 1: having a good storytime here at Club five twenty for
- 1:42Speaker 1: coach P and T. Y'all got a connection from way
- 1:44Speaker 1: back man letting people know about it.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Oh he told me today, Yeah, you worked. He knew
- 1:51Speaker 2: my father. So I'll let you explain the first and
- 1:53Speaker 2: that I could comment about it.
- 1:55Speaker 5: So when I was grew up in Boston and I
- 1:58Speaker 5: used to attend practice is at Boston University when Rick Patino,
- 2:02Speaker 5: you're Saint John's coach, was the head coach.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Let's hear it for Rick and Saint John's yeah on
- 2:07Speaker 2: top of the Johnny love.
- 2:10Speaker 6: Yeah, uh no.
- 2:16Speaker 7: It is.
- 2:17Speaker 5: So I'm a young college player trying to walk on
- 2:20Speaker 5: Division three and I'd go to all the practices in Boston.
- 2:23Speaker 5: So I went to Boston University watched Patino practice. Jeff's dad,
- 2:28Speaker 5: Shaun Tigue, was there. He was one tough son.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Of a bitch.
- 2:32Speaker 5: I can say that, right, Marcus, say anything I want,
- 2:38Speaker 5: Coach Am I right though, your dad tough, hard nose player.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I don't know he was. He was sad to me,
- 2:45Speaker 1: but I'll let you go.
- 2:47Speaker 5: That's not what I saw him practice.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Now, so you telling me that and he gonna watch
- 2:55Speaker 1: this show and you giving him all that love. Now,
- 2:57Speaker 1: I'm not to hear that for the rest of my
- 2:58Speaker 1: life that he was a good player, and every day I.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Was telling me so.
- 3:01Speaker 5: So he's a og man.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Don't say that now you got og title. It's crazy
- 3:07Speaker 2: for sure. Ben.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Listen, what my favorite things about basketball? And you got
- 3:10Speaker 1: a lot of vantage points. A lot of people are
- 3:12Speaker 1: play a part in people being successful.
- 3:14Speaker 2: One of the best traders around, Chris Man.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Please tell the people how you got started and say
- 3:18Speaker 1: helping people get to the next level.
- 3:21Speaker 4: I mean, first of all, shout out to Marcus, my guy.
- 3:24Speaker 8: I met Marcus at USA basketball. Okay, so I had
- 3:28Speaker 8: a couple of players on the USA team and I
- 3:30Speaker 8: met him with Tobias Harris. So Tobias and him are
- 3:34Speaker 8: really good friends. And I've been a part of Harris's
- 3:36Speaker 8: family for a while. And we met gambling with me
- 3:39Speaker 8: and him and Russell Westbrook.
- 3:40Speaker 4: So we were.
- 3:45Speaker 8: We were gambling and me and Marcus was looking like, hey,
- 3:48Speaker 8: double down on zero. We was telling Russ the next
- 3:53Speaker 8: one they hit with zero, which payout is like thirty
- 3:57Speaker 8: three to one, and nobody on it. But that's how
- 4:01Speaker 8: I'm at Marcus and you being in a basketball space.
- 4:04Speaker 8: It's all about community and it's all about you know,
- 4:07Speaker 8: the youth, the ground, the grassroot, and it's all about
- 4:12Speaker 8: you know, it's a small circle. And I went from
- 4:15Speaker 8: being a player and understanding like what my true craft is.
- 4:19Speaker 8: So my true craft is not hooping. My true craft
- 4:23Speaker 8: is developing people and really taking it into like a
- 4:28Speaker 8: science of like understanding, like mental mental health, mental wellness,
- 4:34Speaker 8: like understanding moves, you know, looking at people and being
- 4:37Speaker 8: able to identify not just what their skill set is,
- 4:40Speaker 8: but who they really are. So basketball for me has
- 4:43Speaker 8: been great, and to be around the world, to be
- 4:48Speaker 8: able to touch people around the world through basketball, it's just.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Been a great vehicle.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Most definitely, one thing I like about you Chris, is
- 4:54Speaker 1: the fact that you said off the court is just
- 4:56Speaker 1: as important as on the court, and coach, you can
- 4:58Speaker 1: contest it. Is you evaluate talent, you have to evaluate
- 5:01Speaker 1: the person as well. Do you keep that in your
- 5:03Speaker 1: mind where you go through rankings and stuff like that.
- 5:05Speaker 1: It's like on court, but off the court is just
- 5:07Speaker 1: as an important.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Absolutely. I put a big emphasis on traits, not just talent.
- 5:13Speaker 5: There's a lot of talent out there, but talent doesn't
- 5:15Speaker 5: develop without traits. I believe that your your traits can
- 5:20Speaker 5: protect your talent and it can grow your talent. A
- 5:23Speaker 5: lot of talented guys with red flags. That's why they
- 5:26Speaker 5: don't make it in the basketball space and sometimes they
- 5:29Speaker 5: don't make it in the professional space. So character, to
- 5:32Speaker 5: me is huge. Every high school player I have a
- 5:34Speaker 5: chance to talk to, I tell them three things. Focus
- 5:37Speaker 5: on character, academics, and talent. I tell them to chase
- 5:42Speaker 5: the cat. That's the acronym.
- 5:44Speaker 2: So far as there's a hell of an acronym, coach
- 5:48Speaker 2: that might get you in trouble too.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Wow.
- 5:54Speaker 9: So far as the talent side of it, though, how
- 5:56Speaker 9: you go about like ranking a player?
- 6:01Speaker 3: What are the steps?
- 6:03Speaker 2: Well?
- 6:03Speaker 5: I coach for a long time so I have that.
- 6:06Speaker 5: Hopefully I have the experience right and background and seeing
- 6:10Speaker 5: the players at the highest level of college. I coach
- 6:12Speaker 5: at Ohio State, Boston College, so I know what the
- 6:15Speaker 5: high major looks like. Been a head coach at Wright
- 6:17Speaker 5: State mid major, and I was an assistant with Rick
- 6:20Speaker 5: Majeris at Saint Louis University then he passed away. So
- 6:25Speaker 5: for twenty two years I've been in the college game
- 6:27Speaker 5: as a head coach or an assistant.
- 6:29Speaker 4: So I look at.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Different categories that are important to the game talent wise.
- 6:34Speaker 5: First athleticism. You have to see who has the athleticism,
- 6:38Speaker 5: who has the measurables skill level, who can impact the
- 6:42Speaker 5: game without scoring for me? And I know for Chris
- 6:46Speaker 5: basketball IQ is missing in the game and it's needed.
- 6:51Speaker 5: And I look for kids that understand what they're doing
- 6:54Speaker 5: and why they're doing it. Quick story on that. Talk
- 6:58Speaker 5: to an NBA assistant coach just this year and he said,
- 7:01Speaker 5: half our team doesn't know where to go on the court.
- 7:05Speaker 5: They don't know when I say cut, they don't understand
- 7:08Speaker 5: when I say screen, they don't know how This is
- 7:11Speaker 5: a high level NBA assistant. So basketball IQ is another factor.
- 7:15Speaker 5: And then I put the traits competitiveness, coachability, body language,
- 7:21Speaker 5: and being a caring teammate. Those are my top four.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Because you had Jeff rank so low high school.
- 7:28Speaker 3: So I just wanted to.
- 7:31Speaker 5: I'm gonna get I checked that before I came. Yeah
- 7:34Speaker 5: about that, okay, all right, well here's the disclaimer.
- 7:38Speaker 2: I wasn't doing it then.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I was coaching to.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Say, Louis when you come out of high school, So
- 7:42Speaker 5: blame the guy before me.
- 7:44Speaker 2: I need to talk to him. Was that they had met.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Yeah, they didn't know what That's why I got the job.
- 7:51Speaker 2: They have bad eyes.
- 7:52Speaker 3: You're right. I had your brother up high.
- 7:55Speaker 2: You did shouts to FoST when you moved, shout to him.
- 7:58Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, thank you for that. Though you're trying to
- 8:00Speaker 5: put me in a corner. You can't put a boss
- 8:03Speaker 5: the guy in a corner in New York. Not good.
- 8:05Speaker 1: But so yeah, he tried to it up for you.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Paul's but listen, oh in YC. Yeah yeah, y'all know
- 8:09Speaker 1: what time it is? We playing them games? I said,
- 8:13Speaker 1: Paul's Relax, now you know what I'm saying. We only
- 8:16Speaker 1: got introduced to each other. Why is Kayane Anthony not
- 8:20Speaker 1: McDonald's all American.
- 8:23Speaker 3: What you got to do with that?
- 8:26Speaker 4: I need to know.
- 8:28Speaker 5: Committee votes.
- 8:31Speaker 4: Who is the committee?
- 8:32Speaker 5: Yes, a lot of people who oh, different people. There's
- 8:36Speaker 5: a whole list of people we live in. You got
- 8:40Speaker 5: to reach out to McDonald's to get that. That that's
- 8:42Speaker 5: information that didn't want me to give out.
- 8:44Speaker 3: So if you reach out, they'll give it.
- 8:45Speaker 2: To you McDonald's.
- 8:47Speaker 5: But honestly, it's always been a vote. Look, I recruited
- 8:49Speaker 5: McDonald's All Americans. Now I'm voting for them. There's so
- 8:52Speaker 5: many great players every year, and Kayanne's a great basketball player,
- 8:56Speaker 5: especially on the offensive end, and he's a really likable kid.
- 9:00Speaker 5: Not to get voted in, somebody has to get left out.
- 9:03Speaker 5: There's other guys too that had great high school careers
- 9:06Speaker 5: this year. Great, I mean great. I don't throw all
- 9:09Speaker 5: compliments unless they're they're earned. They didn't make it either.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Son on the West Coast.
- 9:14Speaker 8: I think six eighty McDonald's All Americans in California.
- 9:19Speaker 4: At one point it used to be like two per stake. Yeah,
- 9:22Speaker 4: and so now yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 5: They don't do that. It's not about it's the twenty
- 9:26Speaker 5: four best players in the committee's mind, based on the
- 9:28Speaker 5: criteria that they give you, which is who can be
- 9:30Speaker 5: a pro, who's dominated the game at the high school level,
- 9:34Speaker 5: and who has the greatest upside among the group. And
- 9:36Speaker 5: that gets difficult, as you know, you make a list
- 9:39Speaker 5: top one hundred, top two hundred, somebody's going to be
- 9:42Speaker 5: left off that could be deserved. Just like the NCAA tournament.
- 9:45Speaker 5: We were talking about that in the back room. Yes, sir,
- 9:47Speaker 5: teams that got in maybe shouldn't have teams that didn't
- 9:50Speaker 5: make it North Carolina, Yeah okay, and then you know,
- 9:54Speaker 5: other people didn't make the tournament. That's the unfortunate part
- 9:57Speaker 5: of making a list.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Okay, I guess that was a pr answer.
- 10:01Speaker 5: Respect, What would you like me to say the truth?
- 10:04Speaker 6: I just did.
- 10:06Speaker 5: He didn't make it.
- 10:07Speaker 2: He didn't get hold of Hey, I like him.
- 10:11Speaker 3: You got to watch him.
- 10:12Speaker 9: You gotta watching someone to ask you like, I'm good,
- 10:15Speaker 9: I got I'm back on you next hold on, Chris.
- 10:19Speaker 10: That's crazy, you know, you know, yeah, oh, Jeff, Jeff,
- 10:25Speaker 10: this wasn't in the contract.
- 10:31Speaker 9: Now, Chris, I wanted to ask you, like, who was
- 10:33Speaker 9: that first player? Did you develop him in high school,
- 10:36Speaker 9: college or the pros?
- 10:37Speaker 4: Like first?
- 10:39Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 10:40Speaker 3: Yeah, cool? Or even that you you might have started
- 10:44Speaker 3: with a pro.
- 10:44Speaker 11: I heard you basically changed Jimmy Butler game round.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Yeah. I remember him in Minnesota.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yeah, Jimmy.
- 10:51Speaker 8: Shout out to Jimmy because getting traded a Golden State.
- 10:55Speaker 4: I think they're like fifteen and two.
- 10:57Speaker 6: Yeah, and okay, look at Jimmy.
- 11:01Speaker 8: With Jimmy, Jimmy's very interesting because Jimmy does.
- 11:07Speaker 4: All the things that you just mentioned.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:11Speaker 4: He wasn't ranked in high school.
- 11:13Speaker 8: He wasn't ranked in the city of Houston where I'm from,
- 11:17Speaker 8: he wasn't on the top scholarship boards. Coach Bulls Williams
- 11:23Speaker 8: gave him a scholarship going to Marquette the thirtieth pick
- 11:26Speaker 8: in the draft.
- 11:28Speaker 4: So when he got to me, when.
- 11:30Speaker 8: I looked at Jimmy, Jimmy has what you need to
- 11:35Speaker 8: be a pro. It really doesn't matter how you start,
- 11:40Speaker 8: but when you pick up, you know that I got
- 11:44Speaker 8: to prove something. I got to go out and change
- 11:48Speaker 8: my life. I come from nothing. When I get that
- 11:51Speaker 8: type of ingredients, like a player like Jimmy, it's easy
- 11:55Speaker 8: to develop because he already had the mindset, he already
- 11:59Speaker 8: had the competition, and he already had the will and
- 12:02Speaker 8: the want to be that So I put Jimmy on
- 12:05Speaker 8: a five day workout, play like five workouts a day,
- 12:11Speaker 8: like micro.
- 12:13Speaker 4: I had him trained with the point guards.
- 12:15Speaker 8: I had him trained with two guards, the forwards and
- 12:20Speaker 8: the sentence. So when you watch him play now with
- 12:23Speaker 8: Go to State, he can play anywhere on the court.
- 12:26Speaker 8: He got all the footwork.
- 12:27Speaker 4: And he has the ability to make the team better.
- 12:30Speaker 8: And so that journey with Jimmy was great because he
- 12:33Speaker 8: gave me an opportunity, a platform to be able to
- 12:38Speaker 8: build him and to build him into something great. And
- 12:42Speaker 8: that year people don't know Jeff when he was in Chicago,
- 12:45Speaker 8: Jimmy had a contract I think about forty six million.
- 12:50Speaker 8: He came to me and was like, say, bro, I'm
- 12:52Speaker 8: a decline. I was like, bro, I can't tell you
- 12:56Speaker 8: to climb forty eight million. I ain't got forty eight million.
- 12:59Speaker 8: I can't tell you the decline. And he was like, no,
- 13:01Speaker 8: I'm gonna get max. I put into work. I'm focused,
- 13:06Speaker 8: and I don't give a fuck.
- 13:08Speaker 4: Turned it down.
- 13:09Speaker 8: And once he turned it down, at the end of
- 13:11Speaker 8: the year, he was Most Improved Player of the Year,
- 13:14Speaker 8: First Team All NBA NBA All Star got a picture
- 13:20Speaker 8: of us taking that picture of signing a hundred million
- 13:24Speaker 8: dollar max contract for the Chicago Bulls. And that's a
- 13:28Speaker 8: player that wasn't rained, sir, He wasn't on nobody board.
- 13:33Speaker 4: It just comes from peer desire of what you want
- 13:35Speaker 4: to become.
- 13:36Speaker 2: That's the fun.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Now, listen, if I ain't the best advertisment to tapping
- 13:39Speaker 1: of a Christmas training on what to tell you, Well,
- 13:42Speaker 1: you just he just sold the ship out of me.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I'm about to get back out of.
- 13:47Speaker 3: You would have took that risk?
- 13:48Speaker 1: Hell yeah, no, no, that would have been signed.
- 13:56Speaker 2: I said, Chris, you're right, No, you can't.
- 14:01Speaker 8: You can't take that risk because there's so many players
- 14:04Speaker 8: that have had your teammate before. I think you got
- 14:07Speaker 8: the Minnesota took that Riskay his name, but he wound
- 14:11Speaker 8: up in China the next year.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Damn. Oh you talk about you, bozo?
- 14:16Speaker 8: Yeah yeah, forty eight on the table yep, and he
- 14:18Speaker 8: was like I want sixty yup, And he was in
- 14:21Speaker 8: China the next year.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Not me, y'all messing who's scoring big in the NBA

- 16:49Speaker 1: Row dot co slash Safety Info.
- 16:53Speaker 2: No, that could have said.
- 16:55Speaker 5: You want to know who's on the committee?
- 16:57Speaker 2: Say his name?
- 16:59Speaker 5: Yo?
- 17:03Speaker 2: So where was you at when Jimmy went crazy on us?
- 17:06Speaker 2: You was part of that. He was part of that.
- 17:11Speaker 4: Listen.
- 17:11Speaker 2: So you called Rachel Nicholas, Yeah, he tried to.
- 17:15Speaker 8: I'm gonna tell you Jimmy. Jimmy is a true competitive
- 17:22Speaker 8: Jimmy crazy.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Suah hey yo aw he said.
- 17:32Speaker 8: He said, Jimmy is the type of guy to keep receipts.
- 17:41Speaker 8: Let's just start there. He ain't forgetting, he plays Domino's.
- 17:45Speaker 8: He's he's ultra competitive. You know, and sometimes guys that
- 17:49Speaker 8: are really competitive, they just black out and they just
- 17:54Speaker 8: focus on what's that in the moment, and him going
- 17:58Speaker 8: to practice was just a build up of what was
- 18:01Speaker 8: going on in his life at that moment. And when
- 18:04Speaker 8: you have that in you where he started for nothing,
- 18:08Speaker 8: playing with the third team and going after cad and
- 18:10Speaker 8: going after people, those are true stories. But he was
- 18:14Speaker 8: there to show them that he wanted to win so bad. Now, Jeff,
- 18:18Speaker 8: before you got there the year before, let's talk about this.
- 18:23Speaker 4: After All Star.
- 18:24Speaker 8: Break, Jimmy tore his meniscus a euro step against the Rockets.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Oh no, I was there.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Oh he was on the team.
- 18:33Speaker 2: Yeah, we came the same year.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Yep.
- 18:35Speaker 1: So Jimmy called me. I wish you wouldn't have He
- 18:40Speaker 1: should have told me he was gonna do that. Shit,
- 18:42Speaker 1: how was State of Indiana.
- 18:43Speaker 8: But exactly, But to show you the type of competitor
- 18:47Speaker 8: is show you that practice. Jimmy could have canceled the season. Sure,
- 18:54Speaker 8: I told him once again, counsel the season. He looked
- 18:58Speaker 8: at me and as like Minnesota had never been in
- 19:00Speaker 8: the playoffs, like in fourteen years or something.
- 19:02Speaker 4: He was like, I'm gonna come back.
- 19:04Speaker 8: I'm gonna make us go to the playoffs, and I'm
- 19:06Speaker 8: gonna sacrifice my body for this team and for the organization.
- 19:11Speaker 8: And we left. We went to California and we trained.
- 19:15Speaker 8: He went out of surgery. We started training the next day,
- 19:18Speaker 8: sitting in a chair, dribbling. Four weeks later he was back,
- 19:23Speaker 8: and I think he had like thirty eight thirty six.
- 19:27Speaker 1: First game back was in LA I told him to
- 19:30Speaker 1: sit out.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I was trying to kill they was in there that night.
- 19:36Speaker 1: I had seen some people I wanted to something body.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 19:48Speaker 1: All right, man, before we get out of here, when
- 19:50Speaker 1: I ask both of you, gentlemen, keep his brief as
- 19:53Speaker 1: you can. Obviously, is there a big change of how
- 19:56Speaker 1: you go across dealing with younger athletes with the NIL effects?
- 20:02Speaker 5: Well, nil now is in the high school game. Forty
- 20:05Speaker 5: states allow nil and the other states will eventually doesn't
- 20:10Speaker 5: affect what I do at all. It's more so what
- 20:13Speaker 5: happens to the players.
- 20:14Speaker 3: The public school.
- 20:17Speaker 5: Public schools have lost a lot of kids going to
- 20:19Speaker 5: private schools because a lot of the public schools, and Jeff,
- 20:22Speaker 5: you could probably speak on this, being the head coach
- 20:24Speaker 5: of Pike High School, kids will leave for the private
- 20:27Speaker 5: schools because the NIL is more open. Each state association
- 20:32Speaker 5: makes their own rules, but at the end of the day,
- 20:34Speaker 5: the government is going to decide NIL, not state associations.
- 20:37Speaker 5: But for what I do, the only thing I noticed
- 20:40Speaker 5: is when kids get NIL, I take a look to
- 20:43Speaker 5: see if their game starts to digress because of all
- 20:46Speaker 5: the distractions. I tell every kid that will listen in parent,
- 20:50Speaker 5: you know, your brand is not your brand. Your game
- 20:53Speaker 5: is your brand. And when they decide to have a brand,
- 20:56Speaker 5: to have a business to make money.
- 20:59Speaker 2: We're all cool with that.
- 21:00Speaker 5: But when it affects your game or your grades, it's
- 21:03Speaker 5: not a good thing. So and it's a hard thing
- 21:05Speaker 5: to balance because adults can't balance money and game. So
- 21:10Speaker 5: now you have a teenager grades, school, game, money, it's
- 21:16Speaker 5: a hard balancing act. But for me, I just continue
- 21:19Speaker 5: to watch the progression of the digression of them on
- 21:22Speaker 5: the court, their talent, their impact, and then I always
- 21:25Speaker 5: keep an eye on their traits.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Mo Stepan, Chris want to ask you this as a
- 21:29Speaker 1: parent of a kid, it's going crazy right now. You know,
- 21:31Speaker 1: I'm saying, obviously you got the game and the knowledge,
- 21:33Speaker 1: but you see, as other teammates, how is that for
- 21:35Speaker 1: them to kind of adjust to this new type of
- 21:36Speaker 1: lifestyle or opportunity. You got a lot of kids, like
- 21:38Speaker 1: you said, they come from nothing. Somebody way of checking
- 21:40Speaker 1: your face. You can change your mama life today, but
- 21:42Speaker 1: that check may not last longer if you go crazy
- 21:45Speaker 1: later and get more money.
- 21:47Speaker 8: Yeah, as a parent, my son is going to Colorado,
- 21:50Speaker 8: shout out to Colorado, Big twelve, Yes sir, and he's
- 21:53Speaker 8: yeah taboid, he can play. I think it's the big
- 21:57Speaker 8: thing is building a system and community around the kids.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:00Speaker 8: The money's always been there, so the money's not changing kids.
- 22:04Speaker 8: Social media has changed kids and the fact of like
- 22:07Speaker 8: showcasing what you actually have. So you just need to
- 22:11Speaker 8: educate kids on how to utilize the platform of social
- 22:14Speaker 8: media to be beneficial so versus them having to do
- 22:18Speaker 8: it themselves.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Just hire a team. So it's there. So we just
- 22:22Speaker 4: need to educate the.
- 22:23Speaker 8: Kids, the community, the system, the people around them of
- 22:27Speaker 8: how to hire people to put in place that can
- 22:30Speaker 8: manage those things for them so they can keep the
- 22:33Speaker 8: main thing.
- 22:33Speaker 4: The main thing.
- 22:34Speaker 8: Now, what I've learned having people kids that come from
- 22:38Speaker 8: influent houses, those are your top basketball players right now.
- 22:43Speaker 8: The people that can afford training you don't see a
- 22:46Speaker 8: lot of kids in the hood getting the right training
- 22:49Speaker 8: because they can't afford it. It's become a business now.
- 22:52Speaker 8: So like for myself, if I got a person that's
- 22:55Speaker 8: in a hood, I make enough money where I can
- 22:58Speaker 8: just say you good, I'm gonna take care of you.
- 23:01Speaker 8: I'm gonna build you from the ground up, so his
- 23:03Speaker 8: sacrifice will be different. But you find people now that
- 23:07Speaker 8: parents can afford training, their skill sets are much better.
- 23:11Speaker 8: So it's really has nothing to do with nil. It
- 23:14Speaker 8: really comes down to what's in your chest, who's around
- 23:17Speaker 8: you if you want to really play basketball, or you
- 23:20Speaker 8: want to be a celebrity or influencer, because there's three
- 23:23Speaker 8: different levels to that. So we can't box a kid
- 23:26Speaker 8: in Because I got people that parents are filthy rich
- 23:29Speaker 8: and play basketball in the NBA, as so many kids
- 23:32Speaker 8: that I have that dad played in the NBA. That's
- 23:35Speaker 8: better than a kid straight out the hood because he
- 23:38Speaker 8: has more opportunity to get trained and to be developed.
- 23:43Speaker 8: So that's why you looking at the NBA now, you
- 23:45Speaker 8: see a lot of kids of dads that play in
- 23:48Speaker 8: the NBA because they have the resources to be able
- 23:53Speaker 8: to get to that level.
- 23:54Speaker 1: But do you think it lacked passion now, because I
- 23:58Speaker 1: think when you come from nothing and you are hoping
- 24:00Speaker 1: the passion be a little different.
- 24:02Speaker 4: It does.
- 24:03Speaker 8: A look, it does be a little different. But then
- 24:04Speaker 8: I look at Steph Curry.
- 24:06Speaker 2: But then I look at Anthony Edwards.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I think we all can relate to him a little different, yeah,
- 24:10Speaker 1: than we can to Steph Curry.
- 24:12Speaker 8: Right, I mean, but we can relate. But when I
- 24:14Speaker 8: look at Staph, I look at Clay, I look at
- 24:17Speaker 8: some of the two parent households by in the NBA
- 24:20Speaker 8: that people don't talk about because the game of basketball,
- 24:24Speaker 8: no offense fall is a black dominated game. And so
- 24:28Speaker 8: when you look at that hero, no offense, but it's
- 24:35Speaker 8: dominated by black players, and so a lot of people
- 24:39Speaker 8: don't talk about two parents. They don't talk about the
- 24:43Speaker 8: two parent household, you know. And so being a two
- 24:47Speaker 8: parent household, you can produce a mentally tough kid. You
- 24:51Speaker 8: don't have to be abused to be mentally tough.
- 24:55Speaker 2: It's her.
- 24:57Speaker 5: We're down on time. But I want to tell this
- 24:59Speaker 5: for everyone more watching whoever coaches trains parents. We talked
- 25:04Speaker 5: about social media, you talked about mental wellness. We can
- 25:07Speaker 5: talk about basketball all day long, and the biggest thing
- 25:10Speaker 5: that I've noticed, whether it's millennials, Generation Z and now
- 25:15Speaker 5: it's I think it's Generation Alpha. The biggest problem the
- 25:19Speaker 5: kids are experiencing is not on the court social media.
- 25:24Speaker 5: First was the Internet, now it's social media. And the
- 25:27Speaker 5: one game I tell everyone not to play is the
- 25:29Speaker 5: comparison game. It's a never ending game. You can never
- 25:33Speaker 5: win the comparison game. And so many kids are playing
- 25:37Speaker 5: that comparison game. And it's a recipe for unhappiness. So
- 25:41Speaker 5: you don't even get to the trainer, you don't get
- 25:44Speaker 5: to the coach. You're just unhappy all the time because
- 25:47Speaker 5: you're constantly comparing other kids have versus what you don't have.
- 25:52Speaker 5: So if I can encourage everyone to help kids not
- 25:56Speaker 5: to play the comparison game, someone's always gonna be better
- 26:01Speaker 5: than you. You're gonna be better than somebody else. That's
- 26:03Speaker 5: the way life goes. But if you can keep them
- 26:06Speaker 5: focused on their own growth, their own development, they'll be
- 26:09Speaker 5: happier and they'll make faster progress. The comparison game is
- 26:13Speaker 5: the quickest way to fizzle out of anything, whether it's
- 26:16Speaker 5: somebody at work or somebody in sports.
- 26:18Speaker 1: I just want to get that in I well saying, coach,
- 26:21Speaker 1: I need to hear that. Hey man, we got to
- 26:23Speaker 1: move on. Make some love for coach P and Chris
- 26:26Speaker 1: Johnson for show.
- 26:27Speaker 2: Gentlemen.
- 26:28Speaker 1: We appreciate y'all. Gonna take a quick break and we'll
- 26:31Speaker 1: be back at it. We get to be in the
- 26:32Speaker 1: presence of a mongul philanthropist and mostly partly right now,
- 26:36Speaker 1: President p Man. We got the one, the only master
- 26:39Speaker 1: p the build. It makes a love Master p Man.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Thank you Man.
- 26:45Speaker 2: So I honored to be in your presidence tonight, big dog.
- 26:49Speaker 1: Before we start, can I say some p Yeah, Hey, DJ,
- 26:52Speaker 1: can you play break.
- 26:53Speaker 2: A Moll's something real quick for me?
- 26:55Speaker 1: Yeah, we gotta send to bar exact like we ain't
- 26:56Speaker 1: got they know in my house. Oh, it's like a
- 27:00Speaker 1: national anthem. No no no, no, no no nothing, no no.
- 27:05Speaker 2: No, no no no, break the ball something, hold on.
- 27:11Speaker 2: They don got that. That's cool. Respect, respect, don't worry
- 27:16Speaker 2: about it. That's my mama. It's cool.
- 27:22Speaker 4: Oh there.
- 27:24Speaker 2: Now getting right here we go. Hey, you don't what
- 27:28Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 27:28Speaker 3: I had to do this for my sister, she said.
- 27:30Speaker 1: If you don't tell him how we feel about this,
- 27:32Speaker 1: I ain't gonna never forget you.
- 27:39Speaker 2: What they say.
- 27:40Speaker 3: Well, you starting off.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Hustle ball against Captiller who I beat your neighborhood drug dealer?
- 27:48Speaker 2: You turned me out?
- 27:50Speaker 3: Seek me o me.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I'm all right right, my faull DJ, I just had
- 27:56Speaker 2: a shower.
- 27:56Speaker 6: I had a show.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, the ball that's right now we locked
- 28:01Speaker 1: in up to. That's my song, man, that's my song
- 28:04Speaker 1: for sure. Listen, man, first things, farts. Congratulations on your
- 28:06Speaker 1: new role. You know what I'm saying, New Orleans holding
- 28:08Speaker 1: down to president of operations. Man, tell us what inspires
- 28:11Speaker 1: you to take that role? Man, You're so successful with
- 28:13Speaker 1: everything you've ever done. What made you go on this journey?
- 28:16Speaker 4: Well?
- 28:16Speaker 12: So black athletes, right, A lot of these people don't
- 28:21Speaker 12: understand us.
- 28:22Speaker 3: They don't understand our culture.
- 28:24Speaker 12: And for me to be a coaching to be president
- 28:26Speaker 12: of operations of a major university and coming from hip
- 28:30Speaker 12: hop exact history, and I'm just letting God lead me
- 28:35Speaker 12: on this journey, y'all where I come from. And this
- 28:39Speaker 12: this is big for our culture and our people because
- 28:41Speaker 12: we always talk about the negative things.
- 28:44Speaker 3: So think about it.
- 28:44Speaker 12: It's been twenty five years that I've been doing right,
- 28:48Speaker 12: and so I know that this is a way that
- 28:49Speaker 12: garden and I'm just taking this journey.
- 28:54Speaker 6: Most definitely, Tea.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Listen, you got a little bit of leneaship with Master
- 28:58Speaker 1: being here, don't even though I'll let him know about
- 28:59Speaker 1: it now. So remember when y'all went to ABCD camp,
- 29:03Speaker 1: you took Romeo and DeMar DeRozan. Well, I was happen
- 29:06Speaker 1: to be on the team with DeMar DeRozan, and I
- 29:09Speaker 1: was having some bright moments at that camp, and you
- 29:12Speaker 1: tapped me on my shoulder at one time and you
- 29:14Speaker 1: was like, hey man, you nice. He was like, but
- 29:17Speaker 1: it's a cat on your team right there. He was like, man,
- 29:20Speaker 1: trust him, he can play too. And you told me
- 29:22Speaker 1: drive the ball to the lane and throw it up.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I promised he'd go get it. We played the next game,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I threw it up to themar He wouldn't go get it,
- 29:31Speaker 1: and I ain't get the ball no more like it
- 29:36Speaker 1: became his team. It was my team for a minute.
- 29:39Speaker 1: The next thing you know, it was his team.
- 29:41Speaker 3: And so that's what I want to tell y'all.
- 29:43Speaker 12: Right, when you look at DeMar DeRozan, Lance Stevenson, I
- 29:47Speaker 12: coached all those guys, Jailer Sus, Big, Chad Holby, and
- 29:51Speaker 12: my thing is those guys come from real community, places,
- 29:59Speaker 12: a property, and I think a lot of these coaches
- 30:02Speaker 12: they give up on our kids. And that's why I
- 30:04Speaker 12: tell any kid in college right now, right, the reason
- 30:08Speaker 12: why you want to play for me at the University
- 30:10Speaker 12: of No organ is I want nothing but dogs.
- 30:11Speaker 3: No puppies allow. And I know real talent.
- 30:14Speaker 12: But I'm also going to help these kids get to
- 30:17Speaker 12: the next level, whether it's to the NBA or even
- 30:22Speaker 12: your education is more important because I call it, we
- 30:25Speaker 12: all should be seeking wisdom and not money.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Right, think about it.
- 30:29Speaker 12: A lot of us use wisdom and as avoid and stuff. No,
- 30:34Speaker 12: you don't avoid wisdom. Wisdom is advancing. So I'm going
- 30:37Speaker 12: to show the next generation how we advance. And so
- 30:40Speaker 12: when you look at me and say, man, I grew
- 30:42Speaker 12: up in the cality your products, just like you was
- 30:44Speaker 12: listening to break them off, right, So if you follow
- 30:46Speaker 12: me on that journey, then you're going to follow me
- 30:49Speaker 12: on this journey showing our people how to get our money,
- 30:53Speaker 12: how to take care of our families, how to build
- 30:55Speaker 12: generational will. And so that's the journey I'm on right now,
- 30:59Speaker 12: educating our peace people. And so y'all give y'allself a
- 31:01Speaker 12: round of applause in here, because everybody in here we
- 31:05Speaker 12: on that mission. We want to get better. Right, y'all
- 31:08Speaker 12: know that I was able to accomplish this. I mean
- 31:12Speaker 12: I lived in the projects with my grandparents and they
- 31:15Speaker 12: had twelve kids. Me and my brother made fourteen and
- 31:18Speaker 12: sixteen people in a three bedroom project. And so my
- 31:22Speaker 12: goals was to give my grandmother house. So that's what's
- 31:26Speaker 12: my motivation. One day, I want to give my grandmother house.
- 31:29Speaker 12: So you also have to have that why. And if
- 31:33Speaker 12: you had that why, you can be successful.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Most definitely with you, like you said, accomplish so many
- 31:38Speaker 1: things across the board, the discipline, the things, the foundation
- 31:40Speaker 1: and place have you can accomplished that. And listen, we
- 31:42Speaker 1: love basketball. We're going to talk about it. How was
- 31:45Speaker 1: that like making it to the NBA?
- 31:49Speaker 3: You know it was? It was something I think basketball
- 31:52Speaker 3: changed my life and saved my life. So I've been
- 31:54Speaker 3: with all the time, all my life. Right.
- 31:57Speaker 12: But the thing about it is right, people didn't understand
- 32:00Speaker 12: that because I had made it a music and so
- 32:04Speaker 12: people forgot that this was my first love. This is
- 32:08Speaker 12: where I came from. This what took me out to ghettom.
- 32:11Speaker 12: And so I've always was putting in the work. And
- 32:14Speaker 12: I showed my son, my son right now, I play
- 32:16Speaker 12: for University of Houston. They're the number two team in
- 32:18Speaker 12: the country, and I showed them hard work because I
- 32:21Speaker 12: know if you stay in the gym, it's like anything
- 32:23Speaker 12: in like this, the game alike, it's not just basketball.
- 32:26Speaker 12: So I just used that as this what took me
- 32:31Speaker 12: out the projects. But I also used that in my business.
- 32:34Speaker 12: So it teach you dedication, It teach you consistency because
- 32:39Speaker 12: it's all about consistency.
- 32:41Speaker 3: So think about it.
- 32:41Speaker 12: I wouldn't be here where I'm at if I didn't
- 32:44Speaker 12: put the work in. And so basketball gave me that.
- 32:47Speaker 12: And so you know, think about it. We all sitting
- 32:49Speaker 12: up here. But you're gonna get older. You can't play
- 32:51Speaker 12: basketball forever. You can't do what you used to do
- 32:54Speaker 12: on a basketball court.
- 32:56Speaker 2: You can't do that, right, hold on, you can't do that.
- 32:59Speaker 3: I know I was rolling with you, bro.
- 33:03Speaker 13: You can't do what you used to do back you
- 33:06Speaker 13: want tie him up because you won't play See that,
- 33:12Speaker 13: y'all see how you know that's what they do too.
- 33:15Speaker 13: That's why it's a mental thing, right you like to
- 33:18Speaker 13: start thinking that you could do what you used to
- 33:20Speaker 13: do back in the days. And you know, I mean,
- 33:23Speaker 13: look at Michael Jordan, and that's why that's why we're
- 33:26Speaker 13: having this conversation. Product always talent, So think about the
- 33:31Speaker 13: product gonna be around when we're not around. And so
- 33:33Speaker 13: when you look at it, the reason why Michael Jordan
- 33:36Speaker 13: is still so successful because of those shoes. Take nobody
- 33:39Speaker 13: you still wearing them now? Fact, and he ain't even
- 33:42Speaker 13: playing no more. And if you ask Michael Jordan that
- 33:45Speaker 13: same thing, he'll possit.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Man.
- 33:46Speaker 3: Now, I owe y'all can do it. You can't. It's
- 33:50Speaker 3: called for all the time.
- 33:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:52Speaker 3: I'm only thirty six, brother, that's old and basketball.
- 33:58Speaker 4: Repect.
- 34:05Speaker 3: Huh in basketball? When I was playing with what the honeys, yeah,
- 34:13Speaker 3: I mean, my music is what got me out. The
- 34:15Speaker 3: leader wasn't basketball.
- 34:17Speaker 12: So the GM was listening to the ice Cream Man,
- 34:19Speaker 12: and I'm like, man, what you where you get that room?
- 34:23Speaker 3: So I knew, y'all I was done.
- 34:26Speaker 12: So I walked in there and sit down. This older
- 34:29Speaker 12: white man by bass. He not here, no no more,
- 34:32Speaker 12: but he sent me down. He said, man, your music
- 34:35Speaker 12: is pure field damn. And it's a Bible built state,
- 34:40Speaker 12: and your music is pure of phild. He said, I
- 34:42Speaker 12: love your basketball. You tough because he seen me and
- 34:46Speaker 12: Anti Mason get into it. So he said, why you're
- 34:48Speaker 12: not scared of Anti Mason man? And the Mason was
- 34:52Speaker 12: a tough dude on the basketball court, like for real.
- 34:54Speaker 12: He let when I got to the gym, man that
- 34:56Speaker 12: Mason said, I'm from New York, give me the ball.
- 35:00Speaker 12: I'm like, damn, big dog, for I just got in there.
- 35:04Speaker 12: I just got in there, man, And so what I
- 35:08Speaker 12: like about it?
- 35:08Speaker 2: Right?
- 35:10Speaker 12: I had filed Anti Mason right, and he was like, man, rookie,
- 35:15Speaker 12: when I get in the back, I'm about to whoop you.
- 35:17Speaker 12: So I'm thinking to myself, damn them over like sixteen.
- 35:21Speaker 12: I was like, oh right, I got to get back
- 35:23Speaker 12: to that locker room first, right, So I got back
- 35:25Speaker 12: to the locker room first.
- 35:26Speaker 6: I was ready.
- 35:28Speaker 12: You said, nah, big dog, I like you. We end
- 35:30Speaker 12: up being friends. But in the GM couldn't understand that.
- 35:33Speaker 12: He said, to your music, pill Field, and you ain't
- 35:37Speaker 12: afraid of and the Mason.
- 35:40Speaker 3: Man. We decided to go another director. Man.
- 35:49Speaker 12: They changed the colds on the So think about it,
- 35:53Speaker 12: y'all right, By the time I left, I had left.
- 35:55Speaker 3: Something in there. My cold wasn't working no more.
- 35:58Speaker 12: I had to call a security So that's why I said, right,
- 36:01Speaker 12: we have to start thinking about being entrepreneurs, because you know,
- 36:05Speaker 12: we get locked out of situations when it's when it's
- 36:07Speaker 12: over for us. And UH had nothing to do with basketball.
- 36:11Speaker 12: I was going hard every night. I mean, they had
- 36:15Speaker 12: some great players on that team. BJ Armstrong to tell me,
- 36:18Speaker 12: slow down, you're asking this story when you see them,
- 36:21Speaker 12: and I was.
- 36:22Speaker 3: I was out running everybody. B Jones said, Man, we
- 36:24Speaker 3: got eighty two games while you're running so fast. I
- 36:27Speaker 3: was so used to running from the police. This wasn't
- 36:29Speaker 3: nothing for me. This was nothing. I'm and I'm thinking, man,
- 36:34Speaker 3: I'm on this team.
- 36:35Speaker 2: Y'all ever played one on one at practice?
- 36:38Speaker 3: I guess who?
- 36:38Speaker 2: Like?
- 36:38Speaker 1: I'm just anybody like we always used to play ones
- 36:40Speaker 1: that practice. Anybody play one?
- 36:42Speaker 4: And what everybody?
- 36:42Speaker 3: Who you be?
- 36:44Speaker 4: Man?
- 36:44Speaker 3: Come on, dog, I was you acting like I am
- 36:47Speaker 3: from the project. I just told you I grew up
- 36:50Speaker 3: in the project with people.
- 36:53Speaker 2: Know what I'm saying. You played bj On, you beat everybody.
- 36:57Speaker 3: Step Curry that.
- 36:58Speaker 2: His dad was on the teah about the ones with
- 37:00Speaker 2: dal turn up.
- 37:01Speaker 4: Yeah he was.
- 37:02Speaker 3: He was, man, you know what, you had to file
- 37:04Speaker 3: deal back in the way. I know.
- 37:06Speaker 12: That's why steps so good too. When he touched the bottle,
- 37:08Speaker 12: I'm slapping.
- 37:10Speaker 3: Shoot too good? He shoot too good.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Now you can shoot though. I ain't gonna lie you
- 37:14Speaker 1: guys jump. I've been watching you, man. I learned how
- 37:17Speaker 1: to shoot in the project with no lights.
- 37:20Speaker 2: Damn.
- 37:20Speaker 1: Imagine when the lights come on. I'm like, man, look
- 37:23Speaker 1: at that light right here here. I ain't gonna get
- 37:28Speaker 1: no shooting contest with you. I've seen you too. Yeah,
- 37:32Speaker 1: but it's definitely. One thing I like about you is
- 37:34Speaker 1: that everything is always based on family. And like we
- 37:36Speaker 1: already talked about this, were in the age when we
- 37:38Speaker 1: saw them shows on TV. You know what I'm saying.
- 37:40Speaker 1: Everybody remember these shows on Nikkoloine. You remember the movies
- 37:42Speaker 1: Uncle Pee, come on tap In. I don't know, we're
- 37:44Speaker 1: too old, but I remember that. The dope part about it.
- 37:47Speaker 1: You have the Martin Rosen. You have to bring the gens.
- 37:50Speaker 1: They get to see that type of life as an influence.
- 37:52Speaker 1: What's that being able to pull your family up as
- 37:55Speaker 1: you excel as well?
- 37:56Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 37:56Speaker 12: No, I mean I'm greatful and thankful. I just talked
- 38:00Speaker 12: to Brandon Jennis the other day and I was like, Brandon,
- 38:03Speaker 12: what what made you make it? He said, coach pe
- 38:06Speaker 12: because I am. I'm like, and I'm coach Pete for real, right,
- 38:09Speaker 12: I start thinking, because you know it don't hit you
- 38:11Speaker 12: till you get older. And he was like, you know
- 38:15Speaker 12: you you believed in me when nobody didn't believe in me,
- 38:18Speaker 12: and then you showed me stuff because you already had
- 38:21Speaker 12: the mansions, you had the nice cars, all this stuff.
- 38:23Speaker 12: He said, that made me go harder. And so I
- 38:25Speaker 12: do the same thing with my family, with my kids.
- 38:27Speaker 12: Right So I didn't give my son. He's one of
- 38:30Speaker 12: the top players in cal he's the number one player
- 38:33Speaker 12: in California, and he's a freshman at Houston right now.
- 38:36Speaker 12: He didn't get a car till he got to Houston.
- 38:38Speaker 12: So I start realizing, right that you got to start
- 38:41Speaker 12: make people, making people work for what they want. And
- 38:44Speaker 12: I think with this generation, we give these kids everything
- 38:48Speaker 12: they want, even if you look at it right now,
- 38:50Speaker 12: we got to stop that and you just got to
- 38:51Speaker 12: start being real parents and make them appreciate everything that
- 38:56Speaker 12: you give me.
- 38:57Speaker 6: I said, bar for sure, listen where do you see?
- 39:15Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 39:15Speaker 3: So oh for us in New Orleans, what I see right?
- 39:18Speaker 3: And I know a lot of people talk about what
- 39:21Speaker 3: went on before I got there. I just got there.
- 39:25Speaker 12: So we're gonna be way better than I mean we
- 39:28Speaker 12: was last year. But I'm giving kids second chances that
- 39:33Speaker 12: I know that deserve it, that then changed their lives.
- 39:37Speaker 12: Thinking about it, like, none of us are perfect. All
- 39:40Speaker 12: of us then did something that we could hide from
- 39:42Speaker 12: or go and act like or whatever. But think about it,
- 39:45Speaker 12: how do you get to the league if nobody really
- 39:48Speaker 12: pulled you to the side and believe in you. So
- 39:50Speaker 12: I told you I coached Lance Stevenson right, So y'all
- 39:53Speaker 12: know Lance Stevenson out.
- 39:54Speaker 3: Here in New York. He was wilding out at.
- 39:57Speaker 12: First, and so I was able to see the good
- 40:01Speaker 12: in him and showed him the value like man, slow down,
- 40:04Speaker 12: and me and his dad built a good relationship. So
- 40:07Speaker 12: it's also what I'm gonna do is build relationships with
- 40:09Speaker 12: these parents. At the same time, it's all about holding accountability.
- 40:13Speaker 12: But my thing is asking them what do they really
- 40:16Speaker 12: want out of this? So you got to know what
- 40:18Speaker 12: you want?
- 40:19Speaker 3: Do you really want?
- 40:19Speaker 12: Because I had to change my parents couldn't change me.
- 40:22Speaker 12: You know, once you get on that school campus, you
- 40:24Speaker 12: could go wild out, sir, And I had to start
- 40:28Speaker 12: policing myself. I had to start saying that I want
- 40:31Speaker 12: somebody of life. And so I'm gonna show these kids
- 40:33Speaker 12: everything that I've been through. I got a brother dead,
- 40:36Speaker 12: I got a brother incarcerated, right, so it's nothing you
- 40:38Speaker 12: can fool me with. But I got real love. These
- 40:41Speaker 12: kids are part of my family. And so when you
- 40:43Speaker 12: use that word family, that we're gonna be able to
- 40:46Speaker 12: know each other even after life, after basketball and still
- 40:49Speaker 12: keeping those relationships. How many of these other coaches do
- 40:52Speaker 12: that with us, because once it's over, they don't care
- 40:54Speaker 12: about us no more think about it. And that's what
- 40:57Speaker 12: I'm gonna be able to give the kids that come
- 41:00Speaker 12: into my program. Like I mean, I'm looking out here,
- 41:03Speaker 12: I want some of the top kids in New York.
- 41:05Speaker 12: Were able to give them the same nil deals that
- 41:08Speaker 12: we could that they could get from any other universe.
- 41:11Speaker 12: And so I think that's gonna be the good thing
- 41:13Speaker 12: about it. But I want them to know this is
- 41:15Speaker 12: about getting the education, because once that nil money run out,
- 41:19Speaker 12: what you're gonna do. So I'm gonna teach them how
- 41:21Speaker 12: to invest some of that money, you know, and don't
- 41:24Speaker 12: just take this money in your personal name. They don't
- 41:26Speaker 12: teach you our activites that so go get your LLC,
- 41:29Speaker 12: Go get you an incorporate a business, so now you
- 41:31Speaker 12: could write some of that off instead of just taking
- 41:34Speaker 12: that money. Even though we call it name and likeness,
- 41:37Speaker 12: you know, but we're saying, now take this money and
- 41:40Speaker 12: investors in something. So when them four years come, you
- 41:43Speaker 12: got your money. The triple double quatjup.
- 41:47Speaker 1: And so they're not gonna teach us that just won't
- 41:48Speaker 1: give us the money and hopefully that if we don't
- 41:51Speaker 1: win for them, then we go back to the hood.
- 41:53Speaker 3: And I want to change that most definitely.
- 41:57Speaker 2: So yeah, clap it up. That was the bar right
- 41:58Speaker 2: there for surest.
- 42:01Speaker 12: Think about to write everybody up here, how many coaches
- 42:03Speaker 12: still keep in touch with you, Let's be honest, like
- 42:07Speaker 12: me and all my players were still in contact.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't see.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I definitely talked to them about cause I talked to
- 42:17Speaker 1: I talked to Mike Blueholt. That's the NBA though like
- 42:20Speaker 1: college and high school my AU coach, I still talk
- 42:23Speaker 1: to him.
- 42:24Speaker 2: But other than that college now.
- 42:26Speaker 12: See, to think about it, because all they doing is
- 42:30Speaker 12: bring one player in then once it's over.
- 42:32Speaker 3: They looking for the next best player.
- 42:34Speaker 1: Yes the fact, but we see like, because you you
- 42:37Speaker 1: coach a bunch of NBA players, you man, you one
- 42:40Speaker 1: of the most influential people ever. When we see a
- 42:43Speaker 1: lot of people at New Orleans like kind of like
- 42:45Speaker 1: Coach Prime did in Colorado.
- 42:47Speaker 3: Man, let me tell y'all something.
- 42:48Speaker 12: I model what I'm doing after Coach Prime because he
- 42:51Speaker 12: the go yes sir, and uh, to be able to
- 42:55Speaker 12: celebrate a black man that did something historical. Let me
- 43:00Speaker 12: know that I could do it in basketball what he's
- 43:02Speaker 12: done in football. And so you're gonna see, you're gonna
- 43:05Speaker 12: see everybody at our games, but you're gonna you're gonna
- 43:07Speaker 12: get a great game because these the players that I
- 43:11Speaker 12: bring in there, the goal is to get them to
- 43:13Speaker 12: the NBA and to create more testimonies and so more
- 43:17Speaker 12: players that we get into the NBA, that's when we
- 43:21Speaker 12: get more students to the to the university and uh,
- 43:24Speaker 12: we bring enrollment up.
- 43:26Speaker 3: And so that's the page I'm on.
- 43:28Speaker 12: Like, so the basketball part is one thing, but for me,
- 43:31Speaker 12: it's the education and that's that's about changing lives and
- 43:34Speaker 12: saving lives.
- 43:35Speaker 3: I feel like this is my most important job, to
- 43:37Speaker 3: be a server.
- 43:38Speaker 12: So yeah, I got to shout out Coach prime Man
- 43:40Speaker 12: because he paid the way and I'm just about to
- 43:43Speaker 12: kick the dough down, especially coming from hip hop. Think
- 43:45Speaker 12: about you think they want to give me this job
- 43:47Speaker 12: coming from hip hop?
- 43:48Speaker 2: Nah?
- 43:49Speaker 12: So that means I had to be doing right a
- 43:51Speaker 12: long time for sure, because they put me under the
- 43:54Speaker 12: microscope right like, and it's hard to do. So I
- 43:59Speaker 12: had to have a degree, I had to have a
- 44:01Speaker 12: good record. So all these things that I want to
- 44:03Speaker 12: show our culture that we could leave the past behind
- 44:07Speaker 12: and we could grow up and get better, they do it.
- 44:08Speaker 12: They got tattoos under their suits. They done been in
- 44:12Speaker 12: trouble before, let's be honest. But they give a second
- 44:16Speaker 12: chance at changing their lives. That's why I said, I'm
- 44:18Speaker 12: looking for dogs. I'm looking for players that they done
- 44:20Speaker 12: gave up on, and we're gonna have We're gonna have
- 44:23Speaker 12: an opportunity if you really about changing growth. And I'm
- 44:27Speaker 12: gonna show them these diamonds and the ruffs that they
- 44:30Speaker 12: forgot about. Like all they needed was a chance, and
- 44:33Speaker 12: that's all I need. I'm gonna live in testimony, that
- 44:35Speaker 12: if you put your trust in faith and go, you
- 44:38Speaker 12: could actually go to.
- 44:39Speaker 3: The next level.
- 44:40Speaker 6: Most definitely make some letters.
- 44:42Speaker 3: To that with a bar there.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Now, I gotta ask, obviously, you in in many markets
- 44:47Speaker 1: and dominated just about everything.
- 44:48Speaker 2: You did get into the snack world.
- 44:50Speaker 1: We all love rap snacks, man, how is that transition
- 44:52Speaker 1: going from rap music to making chips?
- 44:55Speaker 12: You know what, nobody believed in rap snack me and
- 45:00Speaker 12: used to go to all these different places and tell
- 45:03Speaker 12: people about it. But it's all about the flavor and
- 45:07Speaker 12: think about it. We understand what flavor is and our
- 45:10Speaker 12: people we eat chips. You know, we got the hunting buns. Now,
- 45:14Speaker 12: we've been eating this stuff a long time, but we
- 45:17Speaker 12: don't think that we can create this stuff. So there's
- 45:20Speaker 12: been a journey for over twenty five years. I know
- 45:22Speaker 12: a lot of people think that it's a success story overnight.
- 45:25Speaker 12: It took us twenty five years. So how many people
- 45:28Speaker 12: willing to be in business that long? In the staying business,
- 45:32Speaker 12: the sustainability, So when nobody believed that you could put
- 45:37Speaker 12: all this that looked like us on packages and bags,
- 45:41Speaker 12: we did and that's what changed the game.
- 45:43Speaker 6: Both definitely, you like.
- 45:47Speaker 1: My community people, I grew up around you like a superhero.
- 45:50Speaker 1: You did everything. You played basketball in the NBA, you ride,
- 45:55Speaker 1: you act, everything that a black person wanted to do.
- 45:58Speaker 3: You did.
- 46:00Speaker 6: I had that straight up.
- 46:01Speaker 1: We all dream of be a TV movie who, right, Well,
- 46:06Speaker 1: what's that feeling like? Like you kind of just when
- 46:09Speaker 1: you can't feel like you don't you don't You probably
- 46:11Speaker 1: don't feel that way. We like, Bro, you an icon
- 46:13Speaker 1: of us, So it's a little different for us how
- 46:15Speaker 1: that feel for you.
- 46:21Speaker 3: So to be honest, y'all, I'm more.
- 46:25Speaker 12: Thankful like it don't really, it don't really touch me
- 46:28Speaker 12: like that because I know where I come from, and
- 46:33Speaker 12: I know that I had a lot of close calls
- 46:35Speaker 12: in life, and if God didn't spare my life, I
- 46:39Speaker 12: wouldn't be here with y'all right now. And I'm all
- 46:42Speaker 12: about helping our community in our culture, you know me
- 46:46Speaker 12: and one of my guys was laughing the other day, right. So,
- 46:49Speaker 12: in California got a program called Urban Born and Nipsey
- 46:53Speaker 12: Hustle was in our program in the eighth grade. And
- 46:56Speaker 12: so it's all about helping people will look like us,
- 47:00Speaker 12: knowing that you are important. So I'm looking at life
- 47:05Speaker 12: thinking God like man, you spared my life because I
- 47:07Speaker 12: had a lot of close calls, and I'm thankful and
- 47:10Speaker 12: grateful that I could be here with y'all and show
- 47:13Speaker 12: y'all that we can change and grow.
- 47:14Speaker 3: Because a lot of people they think that we gotta
- 47:17Speaker 3: be tough, we gotta be real.
- 47:19Speaker 5: What is that.
- 47:21Speaker 12: I never wanted to be tough in all this. I've
- 47:24Speaker 12: always just wanted to survive. I want to be better.
- 47:26Speaker 12: And I tell people all the time that.
- 47:30Speaker 3: We invest.
- 47:32Speaker 12: Five, ten twenty of the life in going to prison.
- 47:36Speaker 12: Why can't we invest four years to go to college
- 47:39Speaker 12: or to create a business or brand. And so I'm
- 47:42Speaker 12: a living testimony that if you do that, then you
- 47:45Speaker 12: can live a legit life. Because think about it, if
- 47:48Speaker 12: we do all this negative stuff. And so when I
- 47:50Speaker 12: start making these movies, I'll invest my own money into it.
- 47:53Speaker 3: I want to show us that if you believe in yourself, put.
- 47:56Speaker 12: Your money into what you believe in, because you're going
- 47:59Speaker 12: to get the make a piece of the pie. But
- 48:01Speaker 12: when you running around and you want to be pampered,
- 48:04Speaker 12: that mean you don't want to put the work in.
- 48:05Speaker 12: So all those things that you talk about, what I've done,
- 48:08Speaker 12: I never been pampered I've always get out and put
- 48:11Speaker 12: the work in and then I get my bigger piece
- 48:14Speaker 12: of the pie because I made the biggest investment in myself.
- 48:18Speaker 12: And so when you look in that mirror, I want
- 48:19Speaker 12: you try to look in that mirror and say, what
- 48:21Speaker 12: am I doing? How can I get to the next level?
- 48:24Speaker 12: Am I spending my twenty four hours wisely? Think about
- 48:27Speaker 12: because most of us turning up. If you turning up
- 48:30Speaker 12: twenty four hours, then you're not gonna beat me. Not
- 48:33Speaker 12: gonna beat me at nothing I'm doing. And I think
- 48:36Speaker 12: that that's what's my motivation is. And I know a
- 48:39Speaker 12: lot of people say, pe, you did this, this and this,
- 48:41Speaker 12: But I love what I'm doing, So I don't see
- 48:44Speaker 12: it as like, oh, you're doing all these different things.
- 48:46Speaker 3: No, they all go together.
- 48:47Speaker 12: Like think about like you say, every athlete in the hood,
- 48:51Speaker 12: they love music, they love movies, they gonna love products.
- 48:57Speaker 3: And all these different things. And I just like this,
- 49:00Speaker 3: that's what we do anyway.
- 49:01Speaker 12: And I just said that, you know, when I stopped
- 49:04Speaker 12: saying that I wanted to be a boss and I
- 49:07Speaker 12: wanted to be a leader. It's two different things. Because
- 49:10Speaker 12: a boss just he controlled everything. Being a leader, you're
- 49:13Speaker 12: gonna create more leaders. And so when I got to
- 49:16Speaker 12: that point in my life, I feel like that's when
- 49:18Speaker 12: God spared my life and saved my life. Say hey,
- 49:21Speaker 12: you know, you can lead the people and the ones
- 49:23Speaker 12: that want to listen, because think about where we come from,
- 49:25Speaker 12: a lot of us don't want to listen.
- 49:27Speaker 3: That's why I told you I got a brother.
- 49:28Speaker 12: Then I got a brother incarcerated, because that's all about
- 49:31Speaker 12: that one word listening.
- 49:32Speaker 3: So you got to be able to listen.
- 49:34Speaker 1: You know.
- 49:35Speaker 3: They say a wise man learned, but a fool never will.
- 49:38Speaker 12: And I learned from not only other people mistakes, but
- 49:41Speaker 12: I also look at my life and say, Okay, if
- 49:44Speaker 12: I go that way, I'm gonna be good.
- 49:46Speaker 3: But if I go this way with all my homeboys
- 49:48Speaker 3: and I'm going to prison.
- 49:50Speaker 12: I stopped getting in the car and wanting to go
- 49:52Speaker 12: to jail with my homeboys and saying, man, look, I'm
- 49:55Speaker 12: investing my education.
- 49:56Speaker 3: I think that was the only thing that changed my life.
- 49:59Speaker 3: And that's why I keep.
- 50:00Speaker 12: Telling y'all, wisdom is the most important thing that we
- 50:03Speaker 12: could have. Just thinking about most of us to pray
- 50:05Speaker 12: for money, man, Lord, I need to pay my bills.
- 50:09Speaker 12: Help me, No man, if you get the wisdom, the
- 50:11Speaker 12: money gonna come. And that's what's been happening for me
- 50:14Speaker 12: my whole life.
- 50:21Speaker 1: And one thing I want to applause you on getting
- 50:23Speaker 1: back to the music. Obviously you are success in it,
- 50:26Speaker 1: but the way that you ran your record label needs
- 50:29Speaker 1: to be applauded. If you look everywhere from the marketing aspect,
- 50:32Speaker 1: and we talked about some of the best people to
- 50:33Speaker 1: market your names needs to be on that list. Everybody
- 50:35Speaker 1: here know a no limit cover when you see it,
- 50:39Speaker 1: marketing genius.
- 50:40Speaker 2: The quality you know, tap in. The quality was.
- 50:44Speaker 1: There, The marketing was there, and you was a well
- 50:46Speaker 1: oiled machine. You look at so many people who have
- 50:48Speaker 1: so many sad stories of music. You was an independent
- 50:52Speaker 1: I won't like you talk about the boss of leader,
- 50:54Speaker 1: but you was a real boss in the music industry.
- 50:56Speaker 1: When you came to that realization, what was like to say,
- 50:58Speaker 1: all right, I see where everybody else is, but I'm
- 51:00Speaker 1: doing this way different and way better.
- 51:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:03Speaker 12: So when I first got into music business, you know,
- 51:06Speaker 12: every business I created, I find a problem.
- 51:09Speaker 3: So I found the problem.
- 51:10Speaker 12: None of us was making money in the music industry,
- 51:13Speaker 12: and a lot of us were superstars. We was on
- 51:16Speaker 12: all these billboards. We was on all these records, but
- 51:19Speaker 12: we wasn't making no real money. And when you look
- 51:23Speaker 12: at the deals, was like us making seven percent, twelve percent.
- 51:29Speaker 12: The biggest percentage in music was Michael Jackson. He was
- 51:32Speaker 12: making twenty two percent of record and I said, I
- 51:35Speaker 12: need to change that.
- 51:37Speaker 4: And so.
- 51:39Speaker 3: And then I started making my own covers. I came
- 51:41Speaker 3: to New York. So when I first did about it
- 51:43Speaker 3: bout it, I came to New York, I went through
- 51:47Speaker 3: every hood out here, and people was like, man, that's
- 51:52Speaker 3: you on that post. I said, nah, man, I'm from
- 51:54Speaker 3: New Orleans.
- 51:54Speaker 6: We all look alike.
- 51:57Speaker 12: But I came out here y'all and put my own
- 52:01Speaker 12: posters up because think about it. You know, back then
- 52:02Speaker 12: you will pay somebody to put your stuff, but you
- 52:05Speaker 12: we don't have social media back then, they might throw
- 52:08Speaker 12: it in the garbage cab.
- 52:10Speaker 3: I came up. I was my own street team.
- 52:12Speaker 12: And so when people start seeing and then when the girls,
- 52:15Speaker 12: you know, I sounded different. So I got this big
- 52:18Speaker 12: dunky gold chained on right, and the girls, I'll be talking, Yeah,
- 52:22Speaker 12: what's up baby, how you doing. She's like, I like
- 52:24Speaker 12: the way you talk. I'm gonna listen to your music
- 52:26Speaker 12: because nobody knew who I was. And and just being
- 52:29Speaker 12: able to communicate and network with the people people that
- 52:33Speaker 12: look like because even though I sounded different and and
- 52:36Speaker 12: but New York really gravitated to me.
- 52:38Speaker 3: That's when I knew.
- 52:39Speaker 12: I was like, man, I think I'm gonna make it
- 52:42Speaker 12: in this business because I come all the way from
- 52:44Speaker 12: the South and they started messing with about it, about it,
- 52:47Speaker 12: and uh and and I and I tell the DJs
- 52:50Speaker 12: and I tell the people in the community out here.
- 52:52Speaker 12: I appreciate that because this was the first spot that
- 52:56Speaker 12: really outside where I came from, because I was in
- 52:58Speaker 12: the Bay Area and I was in the Orleans. But
- 53:00Speaker 12: to actually see some a whole different culture, because you know,
- 53:03Speaker 12: music started him. So I felt like I needed to
- 53:06Speaker 12: come here, go in these clubs and test the waters.
- 53:10Speaker 3: How can I get New York to like my music?
- 53:13Speaker 12: And when I got New York to like my music,
- 53:15Speaker 12: I mean the rest was history because they jumped around
- 53:21Speaker 12: in the clubs, and you know, that's what my music was.
- 53:23Speaker 12: It was like, you know, it was all like that
- 53:26Speaker 12: military jump around, get you up and listen party. And
- 53:30Speaker 12: so now I appreciate you guys. I just always wanted
- 53:33Speaker 12: to say thank you New York for believing in me.
- 53:42Speaker 1: We go.
- 53:53Speaker 12: And I want to tell y'all, right, so I know
- 53:55Speaker 12: y'all see me in the music side of the business
- 53:58Speaker 12: making music, but as a young person, I also got
- 54:01Speaker 12: into investing into other artists, and so that's when I
- 54:05Speaker 12: took on doing concerts and shows. I was able to
- 54:08Speaker 12: do the fifty cent first tour and invest into other artists,
- 54:13Speaker 12: and so I think that was the part that started
- 54:16Speaker 12: taking my business to the next level. Then I Snoop
- 54:20Speaker 12: Dogg and you know, all these incredible artists that I
- 54:23Speaker 12: was able to sign and help their careers and jumpstart
- 54:26Speaker 12: their careers, and it's been a blessing man.
- 54:29Speaker 3: Because I feel like when you help other people get
- 54:31Speaker 3: to where you're go and go to keep blessing you
- 54:34Speaker 3: most definitely.
- 54:34Speaker 1: Now you talk about being able to get Snoop Dogg,
- 54:36Speaker 1: is there an artist that you almost had as you
- 54:38Speaker 1: wish you got.
- 54:41Speaker 3: I think.
- 54:44Speaker 12: Indy I Re I didn't know like that type of music,
- 54:48Speaker 12: so she used to come to my house and sing
- 54:50Speaker 12: and I was just like, I just don't want to
- 54:52Speaker 12: mess up your career. And uh, I think that was
- 54:56Speaker 12: the one that got away that I just could have
- 54:58Speaker 12: just I didn't know, because y'all know that what I'm saying.
- 55:01Speaker 12: That's why I say education is so important. Right, I'm
- 55:05Speaker 12: only into the hip hop and I'm just like, man,
- 55:07Speaker 12: I got this diamond in a roof right here, and
- 55:10Speaker 12: I wanted to I'm like.
- 55:11Speaker 3: How much you need to do this? But I didn't
- 55:13Speaker 3: know personally how to do like an R and B tour.
- 55:17Speaker 12: So I told her that, and I think that was
- 55:20Speaker 12: That's probably the one artist that I feel like that
- 55:22Speaker 12: I really couldn't.
- 55:23Speaker 1: Let me tell you right now, if you got any
- 55:25Speaker 1: R on a no lipit cover, shit would have been crazy.
- 55:30Speaker 2: I am not my here, but.
- 55:36Speaker 12: That's what I'm But that's what I'm saying about being
- 55:38Speaker 12: about being since it I truly didn't know what to do,
- 55:42Speaker 12: but like, I've never done that type of music, and
- 55:45Speaker 12: so I think that God has blessed her too on
- 55:47Speaker 12: her journey because I feel like I probably would have
- 55:50Speaker 12: stopped her.
- 55:52Speaker 6: Yeah, that's real.
- 55:54Speaker 1: That's definitely real, because I would never thought India I
- 55:58Speaker 1: would be.
- 56:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I was to that.
- 56:01Speaker 1: That kind of threw me off, man, But that's how
- 56:04Speaker 1: influential you being. I mean, people just want to be
- 56:06Speaker 1: around you. Like we said, I know the show about
- 56:08Speaker 1: the end or whatever, but we just really appreciate you
- 56:10Speaker 1: even taking time to sit with us.
- 56:12Speaker 3: I won't to tell y'all I'm not finished.
- 56:14Speaker 12: So if you follow me on my music journey, follow
- 56:17Speaker 12: me on this journey with the University of New Orleans,
- 56:20Speaker 12: changing lives, saving lives, helping our future athletes and student
- 56:25Speaker 12: at least.
- 56:26Speaker 3: Get to where they need to go at because we
- 56:28Speaker 3: give up.
- 56:29Speaker 12: On us, and I'm not gonna give up on us.
- 56:31Speaker 12: I'm gonna give our culture the blueprint. And I want
- 56:36Speaker 12: y'all to know that. Everybody think they got a lot
- 56:39Speaker 12: of time, but Junior Bridgeman played basketball. He died the
- 56:44Speaker 12: other day, right me and him to sit down and
- 56:46Speaker 12: talk about all the things that we was gonna do.
- 56:49Speaker 12: I want us not to sit down and do that.
- 56:51Speaker 12: I want us to move, make moves. Don't wait till
- 56:54Speaker 12: it's too late. And if you have an idea, bring
- 56:58Speaker 12: it to light, because the most treasures are in the
- 57:01Speaker 12: grade and we got to stop that because we keep
- 57:04Speaker 12: thinking we got so much time, but use.
- 57:07Speaker 3: Our time wisely. Just start now.
- 57:09Speaker 12: Whatever ideas you have, whatever business you want to start,
- 57:12Speaker 12: go for it and create it and do it and
- 57:14Speaker 12: and there's no limit from that.
- 57:15Speaker 3: I did it. You could do it, most definitely.
- 57:18Speaker 2: Man, it's make some lord to master fee one time
- 57:21Speaker 2: for the one time.
- 57:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 57:26Speaker 1: The volume
