- 0:08Speaker 1: Good morning, Mafia. It's Thursday, September 24th. This is the
- 0:13Speaker 1: Morning Charge, your daily 10-minute or less Buffalo Bills news hit.
- 0:18Speaker 1: I'm Aaron Quinn, here with Colin Ritchie, bringing you everything
- 0:20Speaker 1: you need to know to start your day. Let's get
- 0:23Speaker 1: right into it. Bills head coach Joe Brady met with
- 0:26Speaker 1: the media to open practice this week following the minibuy.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Brady shut down any praise regarding Buffalo's undefeated start, emphasizing
- 0:34Speaker 1: that early wins don't mask fundamental errors. He pointed out
- 0:37Speaker 1: that while the house isn't on fire, there are smoke
- 0:39Speaker 1: detectors going off across the entire football team. For the defense,
- 0:43Speaker 1: the priority is trusting techniques and finishing on third down.
- 0:46Speaker 1: For the offense, it's avoiding the self-inflicted, long-yarded situations. Still,
- 0:51Speaker 1: Brady praised the roster's mental toughness, saying the group simply
- 0:54Speaker 1: cares about finding ways to win, no matter how clean
- 0:57Speaker 1: it looks. Brady highlighted second-year defensive tackle Dwayne Carter for
- 1:01Speaker 1: stepping up in Ed Oliver's absence during the Detroit game.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Carter took on a heavy snap load and embraced the
- 1:06Speaker 1: dirty work inside and showed real progress after coming off
- 1:09Speaker 1: an Achilles injury. Brady also singled out defensive end Greg Rousseau,
- 1:13Speaker 1: noting how effective he has been standing up on the
- 1:15Speaker 1: edge to exploit one-on-one matchups against the opposing offensive linemen
- 1:19Speaker 1: and tight ends. When asked, Brady dismissed the idea that
- 1:22Speaker 1: losing D.J. Moore forced the safer passing philosophy. Stating average
- 1:26Speaker 1: depth of target isn't something that he tracks. It's about
- 1:29Speaker 1: taking what the defense gives. He praised wideout Josh Palmer
- 1:32Speaker 1: for staying prepared and converting on limited downfield targets, while
- 1:36Speaker 1: highlighting tight end Dalton Kincaid for expanding his role beyond
- 1:39Speaker 1: last year's scope to create defensive mismatches. When asked about
- 1:43Speaker 1: Josh Allen earning his 19th career AFC Offensive Player of
- 1:47Speaker 1: the Week, Brady joked that he is, quote, Josh's biggest hater.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Brady explained that he holds Allen to an elite standard,
- 1:55Speaker 1: deliberately holding him accountable on plays where Allen's raw physical
- 1:58Speaker 1: talent bailed out a bad read or a broken scheme.
- 2:01Speaker 1: His goal is to eliminate those hidden mistakes without taking
- 2:04Speaker 1: the Josh Allen out of Josh Allen. Speaking of Josh Allen,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the AFC Offensive Player of the Week met with reporters
- 2:10Speaker 1: after practice, immediately confirming Brady's claim that he is indeed
- 2:14Speaker 1: his biggest hater, along with backup QB Kyle Allen. Allen
- 2:18Speaker 1: said he prefers that aggressive style. noting that when Brady
- 2:21Speaker 1: was promoted, the two agreed on total transparency without coddling.
- 2:25Speaker 1: He added that their competitive dynamic bleeds into everything in
- 2:28Speaker 1: the facility, from playing basketball to the training room to juggling.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Allen addressed his throwing mechanics, calling it a weekly fight
- 2:36Speaker 1: to prevent his body from falling back into bad habits.
- 2:39Speaker 1: He emphasized that even when an off-platform throw or scramble succeeds,
- 2:43Speaker 1: he focuses on staying on time, maintaining clean mechanics, and
- 2:46Speaker 1: distributing the ball quickly. As a result, defenses have to
- 2:49Speaker 1: cover the entire field. On pushing the ball downfield, Allen
- 2:54Speaker 1: explained it isn't an overhaul of the playbook, but rather
- 2:57Speaker 1: taking calculated shots on second and third and long. He
- 3:00Speaker 1: credited wide receiver Josh Palmer for capitalizing on sparse targets,
- 3:03Speaker 1: calling Palmer's work ethic and preparation a reflection of the
- 3:06Speaker 1: team's overall culture. Allen spoke on Dalton Kincaid's offseason physical
- 3:11Speaker 1: growth and the competitive drive, noting how Kincaid's ability to
- 3:15Speaker 1: win against linebackers and safeties opens up the entire offense.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Allen also joked about Kincaid's natural athletic drive off the field,
- 3:22Speaker 1: noting that Kincaid hit a hole in one this offseason,
- 3:25Speaker 1: despite only taking up golf just a couple years ago.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Looking ahead to Sunday, Allen praised the Chargers defensive personnel,
- 3:32Speaker 1: calling Khalil Mack one of the top pass rushers of
- 3:34Speaker 1: the last two decades and highlighting the physicality of safety
- 3:37Speaker 1: chick Derwin James. On his own line, Allen gave a
- 3:40Speaker 1: strong nod to guard Alec Anderson, calling him an athletic
- 3:44Speaker 1: sicko on the field who brings raw aggression to the
- 3:46Speaker 1: left side next to Deion Dawkins. Let's turn to the
- 3:50Speaker 1: initial injury report from Wednesday's practice, and there's a lot
- 3:52Speaker 1: to unpack for Buffalo. The headliner is DJ Moore. He
- 3:56Speaker 1: was limited with a shoulder AC joint sprain, but he
- 3:58Speaker 1: wore a red non-contact jersey and ran through individual drills.
- 4:01Speaker 1: When asked about the injury, he said he would be
- 4:03Speaker 1: ready to go unless there was a setback. The real
- 4:06Speaker 1: concern is on the defensive line and at receiver. Keon
- 4:09Speaker 1: Coleman sat out with an ankle that he tweaked against Detroit,
- 4:12Speaker 1: and Ed Oliver didn't practice either with a hip flexor issue.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Add in TJ Sanders' missing practice after an appendectomy, and
- 4:18Speaker 1: Buffalo's interior defensive line is getting tested very fast. The
- 4:22Speaker 1: good news, Terrell Bernard and Joe Andreessen were full go.
- 4:25Speaker 1: If you think Buffalo's banged up, take a look at
- 4:28Speaker 1: the Chargers injury report. LA had eight guys sit out Wednesday. Now,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Khalil Mack and Derwin James are mostly taking vet rest days,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but the rest of the list is ugly for Jim Harbaugh.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Starting guard, Coyote Awushika, is out with a fibula injury. Tackle,
- 4:43Speaker 1: Trey Pipkins, sat out with a knee. And all-pro tackle,
- 4:46Speaker 1: Rashawn Slater, was limited with a groin issue. On top
- 4:49Speaker 1: of that, their tight end room was wiped out after
- 4:52Speaker 1: Charlie Kohler had a forearm surgery earlier this week, and
- 4:56Speaker 1: David Njoku was placed on IR.
- 4:59Speaker 2: The Bills announced the signing of defensive tackle Austin Johnson
- 5:03Speaker 2: to the practice squad. If that name sounds familiar... because
- 5:06Speaker 2: Johnson played in 15 regular season games and three playoff
- 5:10Speaker 2: games with the Bills back in 2024. He recorded half
- 5:14Speaker 2: a sack and two interceptions that season. This comes after
- 5:18Speaker 2: the Bills announced today that defensive tackle TJ Sanders had
- 5:21Speaker 2: an appendectomy. The Bills now have two defensive linemen on
- 5:25Speaker 2: the practice squad, but fellow defensive tackle Travis Clayton is
- 5:29Speaker 2: ineligible to play this season while counting as the team's
- 5:32Speaker 2: international pathway player. If the Bills need to call up
- 5:35Speaker 2: a defensive lineman from the practice squad, it'll be Austin Johnson.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Speaking of the practice squad, something to monitor this week
- 5:43Speaker 2: is practice squad members Frank Gore Jr. and Greg Dortch.
- 5:47Speaker 2: These two were Buffalo's call-ups for both of their games
- 5:50Speaker 2: so far this season, meaning each just has one practice
- 5:54Speaker 2: squad call-up remaining. After a player on the practice squad
- 5:57Speaker 2: is called up three times, they must be signed to
- 5:59Speaker 2: the active roster in order for the team to keep them.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Add another one to his resume. Josh Allen was named
- 6:07Speaker 2: AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his five-touchdown performance
- 6:11Speaker 2: on Thursday night against the Lions. According to Bill's PR,
- 6:15Speaker 2: this is the 19th time Allen has won the award,
- 6:18Speaker 2: the most of any player since he entered the league
- 6:21Speaker 2: in 2018. He trails only three players all time in
- 6:26Speaker 2: Player of the Week awards. He has 19. He trails
- 6:29Speaker 2: Drew Brees with 25, Peyton Manning with 27, and Tom
- 6:33Speaker 2: Brady with 32. Allen was also named the MVP, that's
- 6:39Speaker 2: the Nickelodeon MVP award, this week as part of the
- 6:42Speaker 2: channel's partnership with the NFL. If you missed it last night,
- 6:47Speaker 2: check out the Cover One Buffalo podcast with Greg Thompson
- 6:50Speaker 2: and Aaron Quinn. They chatted with Stephen Haglund and Tyler
- 6:54Speaker 2: Schoon from the Guilty as Charge podcast about the Bills vs.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Chargers Week 3 matchup. That's going to do it for
- 7:01Speaker 2: today's edition of The Morning Charge.
