- 0:02Tyler Johnson: Hey everyone, welcome back to 22 Panels. This is the podcast that aims to examine, explore, and elevate the medium of comics. I am Tyler, sitting with you on a Saturday, and across the interwebs.
- 0:16Tyler Johnson: is just Tad. Hey, Tad!
- 0:18Tad Eggleston: Hey, hey!
- 0:19Tyler Johnson: Just tap. They were all expecting something big, and it wasn't even Phil.
- 0:25Tad Eggleston: Just me, just me. Oh, I forgot to ask off-air, did you manage to read Copa Round 3?
- 0:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 0:31Tad Eggleston: Or should we… okay. Okay, so we don't.
- 0:32Tyler Johnson: We can… we could do either. We could wait for Phil, or we could talk about it.
- 0:35Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, we'll do it. I just wanted to make certain we didn't need to switch up the great responsibility.
- 0:41Tyler Johnson: Oh, sure.
- 0:43Tad Eggleston: I like it.
- 0:44Tyler Johnson: It's… it's good.
- 0:45Tad Eggleston: So, so…
- 0:47Tad Eggleston: since it doesn't fit into my 3 News and Notes, we're gonna send out some… some thoughts, prayers, healing vibes to Adam Hughes.
- 0:58Tyler Johnson: Oh, yes.
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: Stage 3?
- 1:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that's what I heard.
- 1:04Tad Eggleston: Pancreatic?
- 1:05Tyler Johnson: Patriotic, yep.
- 1:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah, pancreatic cancer, he's… he's canceled upcoming events.
- 1:12Tad Eggleston: As he and his family go through that. So our best to them.
- 1:19Tad Eggleston: But now for, for news and note, in a, in a more humorous than normal, amount, first of all, there, there are, I think,
- 1:33Tad Eggleston: two, maybe three people that actually listen to all of the ridiculous number of episodes that I produce, and one of them is my brother Adam, and when this
- 1:45Tad Eggleston: episode, releases tomorrow on April 19th. It will be his 42nd birthday. So, so, happy, happy meeting of life.
- 2:00Tad Eggleston: The universe and everything.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: birthday, to my brother Adam.
- 2:08Tyler Johnson: I… I feel bad. I thought you only had Brother Peter.
- 2:12Tad Eggleston: No, that's the youngest brother.
- 2:13Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay, okay.
- 2:14Tad Eggleston: My brother Adam's right in between us.
- 2:18Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 2:19Tad Eggleston: And he listens to all of these, so happy birthday, Adam.
- 2:22Tad Eggleston: There's even a decent chance that he will be listening to it on his birthday, particularly if I make certain it gets out in a timely manner. And I might release it earlier in the day tomorrow, just so that it will.
- 2:35Tyler Johnson: Still, he has time, yeah.
- 2:36Tad Eggleston: Happy birthday!
- 2:39Tad Eggleston: So,
- 2:42Tad Eggleston: the next, and I'm so excited about this, I'm even more excited because I have already read it.
- 2:49Tad Eggleston: It was announced that Starhenge Book 2 We'll begin in July, People who've been listening
- 3:01Tad Eggleston: Adam, mom.
- 3:03Tad Eggleston: Know how much I love Starhench Book 1, The Dragon and the boar. Starhench Book 2.
- 3:12Tad Eggleston: I think it's a kiss for Atticus?
- 3:16Tad Eggleston: We'll kick off…
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: in… July?
- 3:25Tad Eggleston: I think we've got a date on it.
- 3:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 3:28Tad Eggleston: Starhenge Book 2, Kiss for Atticus, number 1.
- 3:34Tad Eggleston: will be in store on July 1st. It's in the new catalog.
- 3:39Tad Eggleston: And I… I loved it.
- 3:44Tad Eggleston: I love Starhenge. You know I love Starhenge, but .
- 3:48Tad Eggleston: I may have gotten the announcement, and immediately…
- 3:53Tyler Johnson: Texted your mom. Mom, look!
- 3:56Tad Eggleston: Well, no, actually, I immediately emailed Liam.
- 4:00Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: And I'm like, first of all, when are you coming back? Second of all, please tell me I can look at something.
- 4:09Tyler Johnson: Please let me have a little bit of it.
- 4:12Tad Eggleston: I didn't get a little bit of it, I got all of it.
- 4:16Tyler Johnson: That's awesome.
- 4:19Tad Eggleston: So I've read all four issues, it's fantastic, I will continue plugging the
- 4:24Tad Eggleston: Fuck out of this all summer.
- 4:27Tyler Johnson: So, Book 1 came out about a long time ago, right?
- 4:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the, the…
- 4:33Tyler Johnson: 20 years ago?
- 4:34Tad Eggleston: No…
- 4:35Tyler Johnson: No.
- 4:36Tad Eggleston: No, no, no.
- 4:37Tyler Johnson: No.
- 4:37Tad Eggleston: the…
- 4:38Tyler Johnson: for you.
- 4:39Tyler Johnson: 5 or 6 years ago.
- 4:40Tad Eggleston: It came out during our… because we had Liam on, remember?
- 4:45Tyler Johnson: That's right, that's right.
- 4:48Tad Eggleston: Oh, and it looks like… oh, smart, smart! The paperback for Starhenge Book 1 is coming out on the same…
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: day as… Book 2.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: Starhenge Book 2.
- 5:02Tyler Johnson: Yup.
- 5:03Tyler Johnson: That makes sense. Cool. I'll be sure to, at my shop, get those in for those that aren't gonna buy it. Just kidding, it'll be me.
- 5:12Tad Eggleston: The hardcover of Starhenge Book 1 and the novella Ore are,
- 5:21Tad Eggleston: are already available. It's his… it's his,
- 5:25Tad Eggleston: Oh, how did he describe it way back when? I bet you I… I bet you we wrote it in the… the notes. Let me… let me see if we did. We're gonna go look up the Liam…
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: Sharp.
- 5:39Tyler Johnson: You're going back at… you're going back into your episode notes?
- 5:42Tad Eggleston: The Wayback Machine.
- 5:44Tyler Johnson: Alright, well, while Tad's looking into the back, I'm gonna… I'm gonna start calling…
- 5:51Tad Eggleston: What a week has it been?
- 5:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I'm gonna start on that. So, the beginning of the week was quite, funny. Trump decided to pick up.
- 6:00Tad Eggleston: At the beginning of the week, they're still at it.
- 6:02Tyler Johnson: Yeah, so it's… but it started, like, almost a week ago, where… where Trump picked a fight with the Pope.
- 6:12Tyler Johnson: And the Pope is pushing back, okay? Then… Trump released a, an AI image.
- 6:21Tyler Johnson: of himself as a Jesus figure, healing a sick or dying man, and these angels and troops behind him, with the American flag, I mean, it's just…
- 6:34Tyler Johnson: so convoluted, right? Trump was called out on it, he then said, oh, I was a doctor.
- 6:42Tad Eggleston: I thought it was a doctor. Okay, Doctor, Jesus.
- 6:45Tyler Johnson: Yeah, leave it up… leave it up to the dentist.
- 6:47Tad Eggleston: I'm calling him now. Dr. Jesus.
- 6:49Tyler Johnson: leave it up to the Dems to… you know what I think. I think that he was probably told to tell the public that the photo was doctored?
- 6:57Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, no, that, that, that's, that's the.
- 7:00Tyler Johnson: And then he…
- 7:01Tad Eggleston: Definitely the, the, the, Definitely the… the going… .
- 7:15Tyler Johnson: Explanation.
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: explanation.
- 7:17Tyler Johnson: I agree. So…
- 7:18Tad Eggleston: Is that he… he was told… That's gonna be.
- 7:24Tyler Johnson: so frustrating to be a handler of his, and he keeps doing some stupid.
- 7:28Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 7:29Tyler Johnson: Okay, and then on top of that, Pete Hegseth led a,
- 7:35Tyler Johnson: a prayer breakfast at, the White House, or no, excuse me, was it the Pentagon?
- 7:42Tyler Johnson: Anyway, it was a big, big deal, and there was a prayer involved where Pete recited lines from the movie Pulp Fiction that.
- 7:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, he altered them a little bit, but…
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: But he did… he did, also try to…
- 7:58Tad Eggleston: to… what's the word I'm looking for? He tried to.
- 8:02Tyler Johnson: claim it was Scripture.
- 8:04Tad Eggleston: Yes! Yes, that's right! Oh, yes! He didn't realize that,
- 8:09Tad Eggleston: Quentin Tarantino had very much, spiced up the Bible!
- 8:16Tyler Johnson: Yeah, what the… Not only that, but my question is… Is… did…
- 8:24Tyler Johnson: Do you think that he knew that this was from Pulp Fiction, was hoping to just sound cool and say it anyway, or did he have no clue and thought he was really reciting a Bible verse that fit exactly what he wanted?
- 8:38Tad Eggleston: I think that he knew that it was from Pulp Fiction.
- 8:42Tad Eggleston: but did not know that… I mean, because it's introduced in…
- 8:47Tad Eggleston: Pulp Fiction as a Bible verse.
- 8:49Tyler Johnson: Sure.
- 8:51Tyler Johnson: Pulp Fiction is in one…
- 8:52Tad Eggleston: What I think you didn't know is that it wasn't the actual Bible verse that Quentin had… Played.
- 9:00Tad Eggleston: Fast and loose, because…
- 9:02Tyler Johnson: Not only that, but in the thing, there's references to things that were not invented yet, When…
- 9:10Tad Eggleston: Well, that, that, that, that, that has to do with the things that he changed.
- 9:16Tyler Johnson: Oh, okay, okay, okay.
- 9:18Tyler Johnson: It's just so stupid. I mean, it was just…
- 9:22Tyler Johnson: Talk about, like, people wondering, like, why America seems so dumb. This is why.
- 9:28Tyler Johnson: You know, you can't… Like, Trump arguing with the Pope over what he knows more about… about Christianity. God.
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: a, de-definitely.
- 9:42Tyler Johnson: I'm not Catholic, but I would never try to assume I know more than the Pope about his own religion.
- 9:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, to be fair, the verse is from the King James Bible, and I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes.
- 10:00Tad Eggleston: And they shall know that I am the Lord when I shall lay my vengeance upon them. Of course, that was… that was following. Therefore thus said the Lord God, Behold, I will stretch out my hand upon the Philistines, and I will cut off the cherithms and destroy the remnant of the seacoast.
- 10:23Tyler Johnson: Interesting.
- 10:24Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, this was in the Vengeful God thing, but yeah, no, Tarantino punched it up, and apparently actually stole his punch up from a martial arts movie.
- 10:36Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 10:36Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 10:37Tyler Johnson: That seems in line with Tarantino, his movie.
- 10:41Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 10:43Tyler Johnson: However.
- 10:43Tad Eggleston: And so… so…
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: Do I think that he knew that it came from Pulp Fiction? Absolutely. I absolutely think that Pete Hegseth was trying to do his Jules Winston moment.
- 11:01Tad Eggleston: but… I don't think he realized that it wasn't really…
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: From the Bible. But, I mean, the bigger thing is, really, the Secretary of Defense is leading prayer services at the Pentagon on a regular basis. What the fuck, man?
- 11:21Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 11:22Tad Eggleston: Though, actually, did you see the,
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: Did you see the story that dropped in The Atlantic, I think, yesterday afternoon?
- 11:31Tyler Johnson: No.
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: Let me… let me pull this up so I get it right. The Crooked Media guys were… were talking about it some, too.
- 11:56Tyler Johnson: Well, anyway, anything else been funny happening this week while you're looking for that?
- 12:01Tad Eggleston: Well, this is funny and scary.
- 12:05Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 12:05Tad Eggleston: I just found it. The FBI director is MIA.
- 12:11Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I did see that.
- 12:13Tad Eggleston: Cash Patel has alarmed colleagues with episodes of excessive drinking and unexplained absences.
- 12:23Tyler Johnson: Wow. That is so shocking. Look at the shock on my face.
- 12:28Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:29Tyler Johnson: Yeah, you really expected this man to be…
- 12:31Tad Eggleston: This is… it starts with a really, really fun one. Yeah.
- 12:35Tad Eggleston: On Friday, April 10th, as FBI Director Cash Patel was preparing to leave work for the weekend, he struggled to log into an internal computer system. He quickly became convinced that he had been locked out, and he panicked, frantically calling aides and allies to announce that he had been fired by the White House, according to 9 people familiar with his outreach.
- 12:57Tad Eggleston: Two of these people described his behavior as a freakout.
- 13:01Tyler Johnson: So, I'm guessing he was probably inebriated, could not.
- 13:06Tad Eggleston: I mean, that I don't know, but he wasn't fired, though God knows he should be. Apparently, it was just some sort of IT glitch, and or he forgot his password, who knows?
- 13:17Tyler Johnson: Getting his past, where it seems more, more likely.
- 13:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 13:21Tyler Johnson: But, man, what a weirdo. All of them, right? Just freaks.
- 13:27Tyler Johnson: And we're pretty weird, Tad, you and I, but these guys are just bizarre. To think that they… they don't think people are gonna look at this and go, that is ridiculous.
- 13:37Tad Eggleston: A technical error, and it was quickly resolved.
- 13:41Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 13:42Tad Eggleston: But in the meantime, like, people were calling congressmen to try to figure out who was in charge of the FBI.
- 13:50Tyler Johnson: And the congressmen are like, what the fuck, what?
- 13:54Tyler Johnson: What?
- 13:56Tyler Johnson: Okay, interesting.
- 13:58Tyler Johnson: It's quite the other. So, did you find where you had talked to Liam?
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: I didn't find his exact quote. It was… it was episode 56. So, so people, er, with Great Power 56, it's Liam Shark. Sharp, but, but, but I do remember him saying with some, some Doctor Who timey-wimey bullshit.
- 14:24Tad Eggleston: I forget what we said before that. I think it was, like, sci-fi, space opera, arthurian legend
- 14:34Tad Eggleston: and teenage romance with some Doctor Who timey-wimey bullshit, I think is how we described it.
- 14:40Tyler Johnson: That's pretty close to what it is, I would say.
- 14:43Tad Eggleston: Not top… not… not bullshit. It was some Doctor Who timey-wimey shit. Yeah.
- 14:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's really, like… Yeah. It's like if Merlin was Doctor Who, right?
- 14:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, a little bit.
- 14:58Tad Eggleston: A little bit.
- 15:00Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 15:01Tyler Johnson: Well, we can, keep moving.
- 15:04Tad Eggleston: Move on from Cash Patel?
- 15:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it's been a funny week, you guys. Keep up with it. We will be back.
- 15:10Tad Eggleston: I mean, it would be a funny week if there weren't, like, nuclear codes involved.
- 15:15Tyler Johnson: If there weren't people's lives at stake, and millions being…
- 15:19Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:20Tyler Johnson: I don't know. Ugh.
- 15:22Tyler Johnson: This world sucks, man.
- 15:23Tad Eggleston: And I still… I still… you gotta love J.D. Vance, who has a book coming out about his conversion to Catholicism, thinking that he can Biblesplain to the Pope.
- 15:36Tyler Johnson: I know! I'm just like… Wha… Yo, what?
- 15:42Tad Eggleston: That's the thing, he literally said that the Pope needs to be careful with his theology.
- 15:49Tyler Johnson: Yep. He has… Jamie Bear…
- 15:52Tad Eggleston: HOPE.
- 15:53Tyler Johnson: Listen, this is crazy, and I don't mean listen to you, I mean listen to our listeners. He has been…
- 15:59Tyler Johnson: Reprimanded by two different popes
- 16:03Tyler Johnson: That he does not know what he's talking about.
- 16:07Tad Eggleston: Well, one of them died after meeting him.
- 16:09Tyler Johnson: Correct! I'm just saying, like… There… get… I mean, do you…
- 16:14Tad Eggleston: Do you think that that's what Trump was talking about when he was saying that Pope Leo only had a job because of him?
- 16:23Tyler Johnson: Really? I hadn't thought of that.
- 16:27Tad Eggleston: I sent JD! Your predecessor died! You wouldn't have the job!
- 16:33Tyler Johnson: There's been no evidence of foul play, though, right?
- 16:36Tad Eggleston: No. For the pool.
- 16:38Tyler Johnson: I'm like, I don't think.
- 16:39Tad Eggleston: I mean, other than talking to JD Vance could probably give anybody a stroke.
- 16:45Tyler Johnson: I realize that, but, like, he… there was no assassination poisoning or anything.
- 16:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I know. Though, though, though, I mean, like, JD Vance was, was also brilliant last week in both,
- 16:59Tad Eggleston: Hungry, he showed up to stump for Viktor Orban, and Viktor Orban got his clock cleaned.
- 17:12Tad Eggleston: Boy.
- 17:14Tyler Johnson: Ugh, alright.
- 17:15Tad Eggleston: The opposing party won a supermajority.
- 17:18Tad Eggleston: They can actually change the Hungarian Constitution.
- 17:22Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 17:23Tyler Johnson: It's crazy.
- 17:27Tad Eggleston: So long, so sad, couldn't happen a better guy. And then he went to meet with Iranian leaders to try to hammer out a peace deal, and apparently was completely and utterly unprepared, and…
- 17:41Tyler Johnson: No.
- 17:41Tad Eggleston: Oh, did you see how quickly…
- 17:44Tad Eggleston: After, Trump announced the Strait of Hormuz was open, it was no longer open because of ways that we'd have fucked up, and Iran said enough of this shit.
- 17:55Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 17:58Tyler Johnson: This is so stupid.
- 18:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, and did you see they're winning… they're winning the Meme Wars, too?
- 18:04Tyler Johnson: Iran? Yeah. When they… okay, let me go back to this. The Trump meme that Trump posted, Iran… the country responded with a video of their own, of Trump, right?
- 18:19Tyler Johnson: Did you.
- 18:20Tad Eggleston: No, no, I mean… It came from some specific…
- 18:27Tad Eggleston: internet flamethrower-type guy that might be tied to Iran, might not be, but it quickly got amplified all over the place and then parroted, etc, but, like…
- 18:37Tad Eggleston: It's…
- 18:38Tad Eggleston: and it's not just in response to the Jesus thing, it's in response to the, like, snuff videos that the White House has been sending out, etc. You know, our version of propaganda is we splice together, like.
- 18:55Tad Eggleston: snuff videos with… with, clips from war movies.
- 19:07Tad Eggleston: and talk about how good we are. Their version of propaganda is, like… Hip-hop.
- 19:19Tad Eggleston: diss track with Legos.
- 19:24Tad Eggleston: Starting with Melania talking about not knowing Epstein.
- 19:31Tad Eggleston: I mean, you watch it, and it's like, which part of this isn't true?
- 19:37Tad Eggleston: Legos!
- 19:38Tyler Johnson: But it's all true!
- 19:40Tyler Johnson: Oh, man.
- 19:41Tyler Johnson: That's the thing. You don't need to make shit up to make fun of these people.
- 19:45Tad Eggleston: Go.
- 19:46Tyler Johnson: And that's… that's where Saturday Night Live and South Park, I think, are going to have a harder time as this continues going on, because.
- 19:52Tad Eggleston: Well, I think they have been. They have to just, like, ugh.
- 19:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's hilar… I mean, it was hilarious with South Park last time, with everybody going nuts, and they're sitting there going…
- 20:05Tad Eggleston: Dude, we're not even making shit up. I mean, we made up the Satan baby part.
- 20:10Tyler Johnson: Inside of the.
- 20:11Tad Eggleston: funniest part of the episode!
- 20:13Tyler Johnson: No matter what, the Christie Noem episode where her face is melting? Yeah, sure, sure, that was…
- 20:18Tyler Johnson: funny, but the rest of it, like, that's true! She… she… these are these horrible people.
- 20:23Tad Eggleston: All of the funniest parts weren't made up.
- 20:26Tyler Johnson: No.
- 20:27Tyler Johnson: Oh, alright, let's get to comic books. Sounds good. So, new to order this month.
- 20:32Tad Eggleston: Due to order for the April catalog! This is last week to get in your initial orders for the April catalog, and some of these books are gonna show up again when we get the final order cut off.
- 20:42Tyler Johnson: First up is Deadman, one of my favorite DC characters. This one's by W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Morazzo, the team from.
- 20:52Tad Eggleston: Ice Cream Man.
- 20:53Tyler Johnson: Ice Cream Man, I was gonna say Superman and the Krypton Spectrum. Yeah, Krypton.
- 20:57Tad Eggleston: tonight spectrum as well.
- 20:58Tyler Johnson: Yep. The dead man enters the next level in the millisecond following his murder. The soul of shifty circus aerialist Boston Brand was commandeered by the goddess Ramakushnu. Krishna.
- 21:12Tyler Johnson: Who deputized the erstwhile performer's ghost with a sacred spectral assignment, the custodian of all souls. Now Bran floats begrudgingly through this blue-green purgatory we call Earth, upholding the laws of spiritual math and protecting humanity from evil, even if they can't see or hear him.
- 21:32Tyler Johnson: Open up to this new era of DC's most lively deceased superhero, the Dead Man, in a story about life, death, and everything in between. Replete with paranormal activity, possessions, and a profound… or a profusion of other poignant peculiarities. Try and say that three times fast.
- 21:49Tyler Johnson: Final order cutoff is May 11th, and will be in shops June 3rd, from DC.
- 21:57Tad Eggleston: Alrighty.
- 22:00Tad Eggleston: That Texas Blood is returning with issue number 21, brand new story arc.
- 22:06Tad Eggleston: In March 2003, Sheriff Joe Bob Coates and Deputy Wilson Hart are called to the Allison Ranch, the large and richest… the largest and richest ranch in the United States, where family grievances are blooming into full-blown war.
- 22:22Tad Eggleston: This is from, Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips at Image Comics here. Final order cutoff is May 11th, and it will be in stores June 3rd.
- 22:33Tyler Johnson: with only two of us, this moves a lot more fast, you know that? Yeah. So, next up, we're going on to graphic novels. Frank in the Third Dimension is coming out from Jib Woodring.
- 22:44Tyler Johnson: Frank in the Third Dimension is a series of Jim Woodring's loveliest pictures. 32 anecdotal visual vignettes, dioramas, moments pickled in time.
- 22:54Tyler Johnson: As you've never seen Frank before, in 3D. But, as real as you can get him outside of an Ionis Goyan theater performance, which could be next, watch your local theater listings.
- 23:06Tyler Johnson: Frank and Frank's world are already hallucinatory, but seeing him in the most technologically advanced and artistic-crafted 3D ever produced.
- 23:16Tyler Johnson: More than 150 layers per drawing to round the sculpt of each image into full volumetric 3D is an experience that has to be savored to be believed. To be believed.
- 23:27Tyler Johnson: Packaged with 3D glasses, designed by Woodring himself, his new printing brings one of our most requested titles back into print again.
- 23:37Tyler Johnson: I'm totally gonna get this. I'm very excited for the 3D version of it. Final order caught off for this bad boy is April 27th, and will be in shops June 10th.
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: Alright, Her Frankenstein by Kawashima Norakazu?
- 23:57Tad Eggleston: Dare to read the psycho horror classic that horror manga master
- 24:01Tad Eggleston: Ito Junji called a frightening but moving story about an unfortunate individual
- 24:07Tad Eggleston: who lost, in search of his true self, finds his own annihilation instead. Little Tetsuo is a wimpy mess. His parents don't love him. He meets the beautiful Kimiko, an ailing teenage girl obsessed with movies and mayhem in equal amounts. She doesn't love Tetsuo either.
- 24:25Tad Eggleston: Or anyone other than herself, but she needs him. So Tetsuo becomes the man she wants, the monster she wants. He becomes…
- 24:33Tad Eggleston: Her Frankenstein. Originally published in 1986, Kawashima Norakazu's Her Frankenstein marks the bizarre and sadomasochistic finale to a cult era in Japanese horror comics. A few years after it was published, the author burned all of his artwork and abandoned Tokyo, never to be heard from again.
- 24:53Tad Eggleston: Her Frankenstein is the inaugural volume of Smudge, a line of pulp, horror, and dark mystery manga curated and translated into English by award-winning historian Ryan Holberg.
- 25:06Tad Eggleston: So this is final order cutoff of May 25th, and in stores on June 3rd.
- 25:15Tyler Johnson: Hey, I believe you have the next one, right?
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: Do you think you're up next, or am I up next?
- 25:21Tyler Johnson: I think it's you, we're moving on to collections.
- 25:24Tad Eggleston: onto collections.
- 25:27Tad Eggleston: And yeah, Rogue Trooper comes before, tankers, so it's me next. Rogue Trooper Ghost Patrol from Alex DeCampi and Neil Edwards, New Earth, a battle-scarred, poisoned world where Nort and Souther forces fight for
- 25:44Tad Eggleston: Control of a nearby black hole. Genetic infantryman Rogue Trooper is the sole survivor of the Quartz massacre. Together with the biochip ghosts of his dead comrades, he wages a one-man war against the vicious Nort forces. A souther war?
- 26:02Tad Eggleston: veteran called Mac… McEnroe?
- 26:07Tad Eggleston: Captain Nygaard and a group of fresh recruits set out for New Earth in search of McEnroe's friend, Sergeant White.
- 26:15Tad Eggleston: Would… could hold…
- 26:19Tad Eggleston: That's probably… which could hold the key to winning the war. Introducing an all-new adventure from Alex Campi and Neil Edwards, all-new Rogue Tripper adventure that delves into the secret history of the genetic infremen… infantrymen, so that was…
- 26:35Tad Eggleston: Oddly, raised…
- 26:38Tyler Johnson: Oddly phrased, yep.
- 26:40Tad Eggleston: Copy there, but it still sounds cool, and it's Alex Campy, so you know it'll be awesome.
- 26:44Tyler Johnson: Yep. Alright, last up for,

- 26:53Tyler Johnson: New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti joins forces with superstar artist Juan Jose Reap.
- 27:01Tyler Johnson: to deliver an epic action-adventure extravaganza in this new… in this brand new bone-crushing collection. Texas-based Greenleaf Oil has discovered that the world only has 50 years of oil left.
- 27:15Tyler Johnson: Which means Greenleaf only has 50 years of profit left. But their enterprising CEO has a harebrained scheme to change history. Using time travel technology, they will send a team of mercenaries, armed with weaponized mecha suits… mech suits.
- 27:31Tyler Johnson: aka tankers, back to the end of the Cretaceous period and deflect the asteroid that killed… that hit the Earth and killed the dinosaurs.
- 27:39Tyler Johnson: Just a small deflection, though. They aim to have it make more… one more orbit around the solar system before impact.
- 27:47Tyler Johnson: More time means more dinosaurs are born, which means more oil in the present, which means more profits for Greenleaf.
- 27:53Tyler Johnson: This, of course, is a horrible planet, it goes horribly wrong. The tankers return to Earth to find the planet overrun by primeval jungle and gigantic hyper-evolved dinosaurs. The tanker must fight off these modern super dinosaurs to once again rest to the… return to the past and fix their mistake.

- 31:15Tyler Johnson: That's what I thought, but it's not popping up now. My bad. This is great radio podcast.
- 31:23Tad Eggleston: rate is probably June 3rd, because it's Dark Horse, and that's… that's what the other…

- 33:20Tad Eggleston: Again, if you missed any of that, just rewind and slow it down.
- 33:24Tyler Johnson: Slow it down. Alright. Tad, what are your three amazing books this week?
- 33:30Tad Eggleston: We went 9, and we cheated.
- 33:32Tyler Johnson: I see that, and it was 9+.
- 33:35Tad Eggleston: 9, and we cheated.
- 33:37Tyler Johnson: I will… I will agree with all of yours, except…
- 33:42Tyler Johnson: You're missing a good one, which I suspect I know why.
- 33:48Tyler Johnson: What do you mean?
- 33:48Tad Eggleston: Well, which one?
- 33:51Tyler Johnson: The one you just did an interview on, Neighborhood Watch?
- 33:56Tad Eggleston: That was last week.
- 33:59Tyler Johnson: Really?
- 34:00Tyler Johnson: Then I got my piles mixed up. I read Neighborhood… I read Neighborhood Watch just yesterday. Sorry, I assumed it came out yesterday… er, last week, so…
- 34:09Tad Eggleston: That, that was, that was last week.
- 34:11Tyler Johnson: Alright, my bad.
- 34:14Tyler Johnson: My bad.
- 34:15Tad Eggleston: But, I just realized that right now I have it at 8.
- 34:20Tad Eggleston: So, so we'll fix it.
- 34:24Tyler Johnson: Oh, I see.
- 34:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that, when you get to that one you're writing out right now, that was really good.
- 34:31Tad Eggleston: It was.
- 34:33Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 34:36Tyler Johnson: Alright, so…
- 34:38Tad Eggleston: And so, we start off with the David Lapham double feature. Hab number one with Joshua Dysart, Bill Sienkiewicz, Jacob Phillips, and Dick.
- 34:49Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 34:50Tad Eggleston: Very good. At that idea.
- 34:52Tyler Johnson: very.
- 34:52Tad Eggleston: And Night City, number 3, with Matt Kint and David Lapham at Dark House. Dark Horse.
- 34:59Tyler Johnson: Door counts? Door counts? Oh, man, that was good. Okay, go on.
- 35:05Tad Eggleston: Workhorse…
- 35:06Tyler Johnson: Doorcourse.
- 35:07Tad Eggleston: house, you know, got a place.
- 35:10Tyler Johnson: But you're right, you're right, both Hab and Night City were amazing books to.
- 35:14Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 35:16Tad Eggleston: Just… just outstanding book.
- 35:18Tyler Johnson: I, I, I probably would have put your number 2 here as number 1, though.
- 35:22Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean… If I had separated the Hab and Night City.
- 35:30Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 35:32Tyler Johnson: If you had to do HAB, Night City, Narco.
- 35:36Tyler Johnson: The… what… what would be the order there?
- 35:38Tad Eggleston: It still might be Hab as number 1, and then Narco, and then Night City. But that's the thing, is, like, I'm certain that Hab and Night City are top 3 books this week.
- 35:50Tyler Johnson: Oh, yes.
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: So Narco's gotta come in too, no matter how good it was.
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense?
- 35:58Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 35:59Tad Eggleston: From Doug Wagner and Daniel Hilliard, amazing, amazing, amazing.
- 36:03Tyler Johnson: The cover alone, right, with the… it's just so graphic, yet it looks like a child's cartooning. Love it, right? I'm not… I love Daniel's artwork, but then just the visceral blood hanging from the… ugh. Yeah.
- 36:17Tad Eggleston: I didn't ask for this from Jenny Wood, and…
- 36:21Tad Eggleston: Jazz Cornillion is such a great graphic novel.
- 36:24Tyler Johnson: It is.
- 36:25Tad Eggleston: check out my conversation with Jenny Wood, amazing. Which is how the Stark Stubble feature is still in the 4 spot. If I hadn't gone 9 this week.
- 36:35Tyler Johnson: Who would've…
- 36:36Tad Eggleston: skipped the Stark Stumble feature.
- 36:39Tyler Johnson: Well, you could have picked one of the Stark books for… I mean, yes, you went 9, but you… anyway, go on.
- 36:46Tad Eggleston: No, it wouldn't have made the 3!
- 36:48Tyler Johnson: Mmm.
- 36:50Tyler Johnson: That's true.
- 36:52Tad Eggleston: Mark's double feature is at 4?
- 36:54Tyler Johnson: That's true! I did not read Where Monsters Lie.
- 37:00Tad Eggleston: Well, if you didn't kickstart it, You haven't gotten it yet.
- 37:05Tyler Johnson: Okay, that would be why I haven't read it.
- 37:07Tad Eggleston: Yeah, those of us who kickstarted it, we got our PDFs this week.
- 37:11Tad Eggleston: for Where Monsters Lie Dead End, the,
- 37:15Tad Eggleston: The third volume of the Where Monsters Lie saga from Kyle Starks and Peter Kowalski.
- 37:21Tad Eggleston: And we also got Issue 3 of End of Life from Kyle Starks, and…
- 37:29Tad Eggleston: Steve Pugh. And, Steve Pugh, and this is actually how… so I now have 10 on the list, but one of them can be yours. How about that?
- 37:38Tyler Johnson: If that works.
- 37:40Tad Eggleston: Cause I- cause I see what happened.
- 37:42Tyler Johnson: There you did it! I see it. That's why you…
- 37:46Tad Eggleston: Yep. Man.
- 37:48Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 37:48Tad Eggleston: Number 5, Dead Teenagers, number 2, from Jude S. Doyle and Caitlin Yarsky at Oni. Wonder Woman number 32, from Tom King and Danielson Perry at DC. He's gonna make me go back and re-read.
- 38:04Tad Eggleston: from the beginning, because not only is this pulse-pounding in a way that, like, the first issue of Wonder Woman was, it's so clear that he's been setting it up since the beginning.
- 38:18Tad Eggleston: like, things that I thought were answered.
- 38:21Tad Eggleston: I'm now questioning.
- 38:23Tad Eggleston: and things that are happening, I'm now going, oh, wait a minute, what did I miss? .
- 38:30Tyler Johnson: You're gonna have to, yeah.
- 38:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I'm… I'm gonna be… I'm gonna be rereading 30 issues of Wonder Woman sometime soon. I can feel it already.
- 38:40Tad Eggleston: Tom King, Danielson Perry, just so good. As was the conclusion of Where Does the Rainbow End? from Francesca Perillo and Stefano Cardicelli at…
- 38:50Tad Eggleston: Mad Cave, Tigress Island, number 2 from Patrick Kendall, EPHK at…
- 38:55Tad Eggleston: image was fantastic, and we'll call it a tie at number 9, but not a double feature, because completely different,
- 39:03Tad Eggleston: creative teams for Kill All Immortals 2, number 4 from Zach Kaplan and Fico Osseo at Dark Horse, and Ordained, number 0 from Robert Venditti and Trevor Herstine.
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: Bad idea.
- 39:19Tad Eggleston: Alright, Tyler, take a walk.
- 39:22Tyler Johnson: All right, well, we're gonna do a walk with Phil slash Tyler. So the theme I kind of went with this week is older properties that are coming back, and one of these is not that old, but…
- 39:33Tyler Johnson: Headlopper, I've really been enjoying the original Headlopper series. I did not get into it when it came out. I was only introduced to it as it's being re… re-put out, and so I'm going back to the originals and catching myself up.
- 39:49Tyler Johnson: From Adam McLean, from Image. Powers 25 is Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oming from Dark Horse.
- 39:59Tad Eggleston: Every issue of this is like a visit from an old friend.
- 40:03Tyler Johnson: Yeah, it, yeah, it is cool.
- 40:06Tyler Johnson: Mind Management from Matt Kent, from ONI.
- 40:11Tyler Johnson: And this one is not quite a break in between, but that Texas flag for me.
- 40:15Tad Eggleston: It's been a little while, I mean, because they went off and they did Enfield Gang, which is tied to it, and Condon's done a bunch of other stuff, Phillips has done some other stuff, and then they came back and were doing Brutal Dark together.
- 40:30Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 40:31Tyler Johnson: Yeah, that brutal dirt is good.
- 40:33Tad Eggleston: finally coming up. We've got some… So, that Texas.
- 40:39Tyler Johnson: That Texas Blood. Well, that's what I've got for Take a Walk. Check those titles out, and then go back, once you do, go back and…
- 40:47Tad Eggleston: Just go back.
- 40:48Tad Eggleston: Just go back, check out the original.
- 40:50Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Go check out the.
- 40:52Tad Eggleston: Other ones you should definitely go back. If you have not read these books, they're totally worth reading. I think there's, what, 4 volumes of Headlopper?
- 41:01Tyler Johnson: Yes, yes.
- 41:01Tad Eggleston: I think…
- 41:02Tad Eggleston: depending on whether you're looking at omnibus size or graphic novel size, between 6 and 12 volumes of powers, 3 to 6 volumes of mind management, same thing, whether you're getting omnibuses or regular graphic novels, and
- 41:21Tad Eggleston: Is it 2 or 3 volumes of that? I think it's 2 volumes of…
- 41:25Tyler Johnson: Texas Court.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: Texas Blood.
- 41:28Tad Eggleston: Thank you.
- 41:29Tyler Johnson: Right now.
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: the Enfield Gang Massacre.
- 41:31Tyler Johnson: That Texas Blood… Yeah, the Enfield Gang Massacre is actually kind of better. I liked it, I liked it a lot.
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, I love it.
- 41:40Tyler Johnson: I hate it.
- 41:41Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I'd call it better, because it's hard to… it's hard to compare a modern…
- 41:46Tad Eggleston: small-town noir to… an Old Western.
- 41:51Tyler Johnson: Correct. Yeah, you're right, you're right. But, as far as the Old Western, that Texas Blood had 3 volumes,
- 41:58Tad Eggleston: Okay, so th-thru… That's the modern small-town noir. The old western is the Enfield Gang.
- 42:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yeah, but the… that Texas Blood is.
- 42:10Tad Eggleston: 3 volumes, sir.
- 42:11Tyler Johnson: Three bullies.
- 42:11Tad Eggleston: So this is Volume 4 that they're starting up.
- 42:13Tyler Johnson: Correct, yep.
- 42:14Tad Eggleston: Yep, love me some of that Texas blood.
- 42:18Tad Eggleston: So, I, one Piece Race, we think it's week 86.
- 42:24Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 42:24Tad Eggleston: gone back to figure out if I… if I… Miscounted at any point.
- 42:31Tyler Johnson: Well, we could go back and look at the exact date we started.
- 42:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, no.
- 42:37Tyler Johnson: And just go from there.
- 42:39Tad Eggleston: That's what I meant. I haven't gone back to figure out where we started.
- 42:43Tyler Johnson: Okay, okay.
- 42:45Tad Eggleston: So, so that I can figure out, like, how many weeks it's been. Sure.
- 42:51Tad Eggleston: But, it, it, I did, I did read another volume this week, so I'm at 656 chapters. They are, they are…
- 43:00Tad Eggleston: Moving into the new world.
- 43:03Tad Eggleston: And… and… It… it is fun.
- 43:11Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 43:12Tad Eggleston: That's what I'll say about it, right?
- 43:14Tyler Johnson: It was fun.
- 43:15Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, if I hadn't read all of that stuff before so fast, and I hadn't read so much since I read One Piece on Monday, I might be able to say more, but… Yeah. A, I'm a little out of breath, and B, I've read so many pages of so many things since I read any One Piece.
- 43:37Tyler Johnson: So, I just did a quick
- 43:40Tyler Johnson: search, and this is funny, using Google's AI feature, I had just asked it, when did 22Panels Podcast first start reading One Piece? And here's what it told me.
- 43:50Tyler Johnson: June of 24.
- 43:53Tyler Johnson: Progress. By late July of 24, we had reached week 6 of the challenge, that was episode 141.
- 43:59Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 44:00Tyler Johnson: Recent activity, let's see here… no, it doesn't say anything recent. It just says we started mid-2024, so that gives you somewhere to start.
- 44:09Tyler Johnson: If you were gonna go back and look for it.
- 44:13Tad Eggleston: So, so June of 2024?
- 44:19Tad Eggleston: Let's, let's, let's take a look.
- 44:21Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 44:22Tad Eggleston: Let's take a look.
- 44:25Tad Eggleston: Did you read any One Piece this week?
- 44:28Tyler Johnson: I did not read any new One Piece. I have started collecting the, physical, volumes for my store, so I'm going back and reading it physically to just get a different experience of it, as opposed to my tablet, you know?
- 44:45Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 44:46Tyler Johnson: So, I have not run any stuff I haven't read before.
- 44:50Tad Eggleston: So how many volumes have you gotten physically now?
- 44:53Tyler Johnson: Three?
- 44:55Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:57Tyler Johnson: Yeah. That's amazing.
- 44:58Tad Eggleston: Tyler, 3?
- 45:00Tyler Johnson: 3. Yep, yep. I know, I didn't want to brag, so that's why I didn't bring it up.
- 45:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's fair.
- 45:06Tyler Johnson: Puts there.
- 45:08Tad Eggleston: Very good of you to be so humble.
- 45:10Tyler Johnson: I know, I didn't want to make you feel bad by my amazing reading this week.
- 45:15Tad Eggleston: I mean, did you read all 3 of them this week?
- 45:19Tyler Johnson: No, no, probably number 3.
- 45:23Tad Eggleston: Even read more than me.
- 45:25Tyler Johnson: I know, I know.
- 45:27Tyler Johnson: But anyway, are you, are you doing some math there?
- 45:31Tad Eggleston: Well, first, One Piece Race Week 1 was…
- 45:39Tad Eggleston: June 16th, 2024, or episode 135.
- 45:45Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 45:46Tad Eggleston: We are on 232.
- 45:50Tad Eggleston: So we are going to update it.
- 45:54Tad Eggleston: Rather than calling it… .
- 45:59Tyler Johnson: 80s.
- 46:00Tad Eggleston: approximately 86.
- 46:02Tyler Johnson: No.
- 46:03Tad Eggleston: is…
- 46:03Tyler Johnson: 90… what?
- 46:05Tad Eggleston: 97.
- 46:06Tyler Johnson: Yeah, we were a little off. That's not bad, though.
- 46:13Tyler Johnson: That's not bad. Only 11 episodes off. It's fine.
- 46:15Tad Eggleston: We are 3 weeks away from our 100th week.
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: of the One Piece race.
- 46:23Tyler Johnson: This has gotten so sad. I'm gonna have to find where I left off.
- 46:27Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, if you think about it, I mean, like, it's still, like…
- 46:33Tad Eggleston: 6 chapters a week isn't bad.
- 46:36Tyler Johnson: -
- 46:37Tyler Johnson: I just gotta get back into it. I want to catch up.
- 46:39Tad Eggleston: I mean, I'm at six and a half chapters a week. A little bit more.
- 46:44Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 46:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, it would be amazing if I could get it to…
- 46:51Tad Eggleston: I mean, now my goal for 3 weeks from now is to, like… Throw on the… the… the, like…
- 47:04Tad Eggleston: Thrusters and be at 1,000 chapters for week 100.
- 47:09Tyler Johnson: That would be awesome.
- 47:10Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I'll pull it off.
- 47:12Tad Eggleston: Boy.
- 47:12Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 47:13Tad Eggleston: Goal.
- 47:14Tyler Johnson: It's a goal. It's 3 weeks to go for 344 chapters.
- 47:19Tad Eggleston: 344 chapters.
- 47:21Tyler Johnson: You know?
- 47:21Tad Eggleston: three weeks. I… there have been times where we did that much.
- 47:25Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 47:26Tyler Johnson: If you read nothing.
- 47:27Tad Eggleston: on, we were, we were sometimes…
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, like, that first week…
- 47:32Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 47:33Tad Eggleston: You did 39, and I did 20.
- 47:36Tyler Johnson: That's true.
- 47:38Tyler Johnson: We were really into it then.
- 47:40Tyler Johnson: Anywho, you want.
- 47:43Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't know that we're less into it, we just, like…
- 47:46Tyler Johnson: Too busy.
- 47:48Tad Eggleston: Today, we've gotten busier.
- 47:50Tyler Johnson: Yeah, Tad, for you, this podcast has kicked up your busyness. Yeah. You know what I mean? I was very proud to see that you took this to C2E2 this year. Like, I was telling.
- 48:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, wait a minute, wait a minute, hold on a second. This is one of those funny things.
- 48:07Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 48:13Tad Eggleston: Let me look at the, the, the…
- 48:17Tad Eggleston: the name of the file is gonna be what's accurate. It was actually… Episode 137.
- 48:27Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 48:29Tad Eggleston: from June 23rd. I hadn't updated the top of the page, but the file name.
- 48:38Tyler Johnson: But the file name.
- 48:38Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 48:39Tyler Johnson: Yeah, because you… you reused the… the.
- 48:43Tad Eggleston: I just copy, and then, yeah.
- 48:45Tyler Johnson: Okay, so…
- 48:47Tad Eggleston: So… so… so let's, let's fix this again. We're at week 90.
- 48:53Tad Eggleston: Five!
- 48:56Tyler Johnson: Okay, so 9… we were… we were 9 off, not 11, but…
- 49:00Tad Eggleston: 95. And that also means that now I have 5 weeks.
- 49:09Tad Eggleston: 2…
- 49:09Tyler Johnson: Get there. Yeah. Get there. You could… you could…
- 49:12Tyler Johnson: Definitely, let's see, I'm gonna do a little math.
- 49:16Tyler Johnson: 20… okay, we want to get to a thousand… You are at $6.95…
- 49:23Tad Eggleston: I need to do about 70 a week.
- 49:27Tyler Johnson: 6.59… what are you at? 6.50, what?
- 49:30Tad Eggleston: 656, so I need to do 344.
- 49:33Tyler Johnson: Yep, divided by 5… 68.8. So, if you could do 69, you… you should… you know, let's do 69 instead of 70. That's a better number, really.
- 49:45Tyler Johnson: Ugh!
- 49:46Tad Eggleston: So, yeah.
- 49:49Tyler Johnson: Alright, it's possible. It's possible. Our great responsibility this week is this magnificent book called Culpra, and we are on round 3.
- 50:00Tad Eggleston: out a couple of things that I haven't read yet, but one of them you can order, and I think you totally should, because I think you would love it. And one of them, I don't know how to get. I bought it directly from him, and loved that he was selling it at his table. Because, like, Michael Fife was,
- 50:19Tad Eggleston: Mikel Fife was at… CXC last year.
- 50:24Tad Eggleston: And, the two things I bought from him is he… he did… this is totally a youth thing.
- 50:31Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 50:32Tad Eggleston: Creating Copra, the definitive DIY guide to making and self-publishing Comics.
- 50:39Tyler Johnson: Yes!
- 50:42Tad Eggleston: You can order this from his website.
- 50:47Tad Eggleston: And you should, because I feel like when we get done, we should read this together.
- 50:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I like these behind-the-scenes things, they're cool.
- 50:55Tad Eggleston: You know, its chapters are concept, plot, writing, layouts, pencils, lettering, inking, coloring, process review, self-publishing, and escape slash return to self-publishing.
- 51:06Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 51:07Tyler Johnson: Very cool.
- 51:09Tad Eggleston: But, also, his two talks from CXC just went up on…
- 51:14Tad Eggleston: on their YouTube channel, so there… there are two… two talks with, michael Faith.
- 51:22Tad Eggleston: But then the other thing that he had at his table, which was super cool, is Coconut Meat Skull.
- 51:29Tad Eggleston: A Copra fanzine.
- 51:31Tyler Johnson: Okay, coconut meat skull.
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: I forget if… Compiled by Josh Lambert.
- 51:41Tad Eggleston: Published by Wake Up Comics.
- 51:43Tad Eggleston: that, that,
- 51:46Tad Eggleston: He came across and liked it so much that he sold it at his table, too.
- 51:52Tyler Johnson: That's cool. That's awesome.
- 51:54Tad Eggleston: There's… there's essays, there's…
- 51:58Tyler Johnson: You know, I've thought about starting… I've always been interested in starting or making a zine, but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I don't… I've got a few different ideas for topics, right? Like, or themes, that it would revolve around, but,
- 52:15Tyler Johnson: there used to be a magazine called… I think it was called Found, and it was literally just Found notes on the ground.
- 52:25Tyler Johnson: People would send in these found, bits of paper, or notes or whatever, and the magazine would print them.
- 52:34Tyler Johnson: And it was all about lost.
- 52:37Tyler Johnson: people's handwritten things. It was really cool.
- 52:42Tyler Johnson: But, anywho, let's talk about COPRA!
- 52:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, well, that's what we're doing.
- 52:48Tyler Johnson: Yeah, round 3!
- 52:50Tyler Johnson: So, again.
- 52:52Tad Eggleston: This was a, like, a series of one-shots.
- 52:55Tad Eggleston: Where, where everybody… everybody went home.
- 52:59Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 53:00Tyler Johnson: So, this round.
- 53:02Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, and I like that, because it's like…
- 53:05Tad Eggleston: We get to learn so much more about them.
- 53:08Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 53:09Tad Eggleston: Not through your traditional, like, oh, here's your origin story flashback. It's like, no.
- 53:15Tyler Johnson: No. They've just…
- 53:16Tad Eggleston: been on the run, they just got themselves cleared, now they deserve a break. They're all going back to their old haunts, their old families, whatnot, and we're.
- 53:26Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 53:27Tad Eggleston: about them that way.
- 53:29Tyler Johnson: So this is issues 13 through 18, and it… you're right, it is a bit of a shift, right? We're… we're, the other… the other volumes were, like.
- 53:38Tyler Johnson: full-on, and then no breaks, right? And then world hopping, and this is where everything gets to breathe a little bit in the downtime, and then we get these cool little vignettes, that dive into the old friends and their older
- 53:51Tyler Johnson: Habits.
- 53:52Tad Eggleston: I mean, I loved, and I can't remember his name right now, but the guy that's normally in the suit, A, having him all out of his… all out of the suit, and B, like, him hanging out with his grandma.
- 54:02Tyler Johnson: Yes. I don't…
- 54:03Tad Eggleston: Let's play cards, let's play dominoes.
- 54:05Tyler Johnson: Yep, yep.
- 54:07Tyler Johnson: Here?
- 54:10Tyler Johnson: I like it, it's very gritty, as a whole, the whole thing. And, I had never read it before, so this is really fun for me.
- 54:17Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and, like… and this is something I'm certain we'll get into
- 54:27Tad Eggleston: more at some point. I love the way he challenged himself.
- 54:32Tad Eggleston: Like, the whole… the whole purpose is to move fast, to… to… to not… work…
- 54:41Tad Eggleston: Work too hard is not the word I'm… to not…
- 54:50Tad Eggleston: To not overthink.
- 54:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 54:53Tad Eggleston: to keep moving, to keep getting pages done. And that leads to so many interesting panel choices, color choices.
- 55:03Tad Eggleston: You know, sometimes… I mean, how often do you see comics where, like, There are pages where, like.
- 55:14Tad Eggleston: one character is colored and other characters aren't.
- 55:20Tad Eggleston: You know, makes you notice that he draws it all on this off-white paper.
- 55:27Tad Eggleston: Which he can then use to affect .
- 55:31Tyler Johnson: I like that. I mean, it gives it a definite aesthetic, right? It gives it a definite feel to how it's supposed to look, and…
- 55:37Tyler Johnson: Yeah.
- 55:38Tad Eggleston: Because it slowed down this… this volume, and… and, like…
- 55:46Tad Eggleston: I had read at least this far before, I'll find out this week if I've read volume 4, I can't remember if I've read Volume 4, but I've read at least this far before, so some of this is remembering, but I remember that this is kind of the point where
- 56:02Tad Eggleston: It really sinks in.
- 56:08Tad Eggleston: You know, because you've got so… such balls-to-the-wall action.
- 56:13Tyler Johnson: Right, so…
- 56:14Tad Eggleston: for those first two volumes, that it really sinks in that, like.
- 56:19Tad Eggleston: He's a special artist in so many different ways.
- 56:23Tyler Johnson: Correct. This is the volume where I don't feel like it's a love letter to, 80s Suicide Squad.
- 56:32Tyler Johnson: You know what I mean? This is where it's like, I finally feel like it's taking on its own…
- 56:37Tyler Johnson: its own thing, here in Volume 3. I will say I enjoyed this a lot better. For me, the heavy, frantic pace of the other ones, are just… are just that. Frantic, and I get…
- 56:51Tyler Johnson: I read through it faster, if it's faster, and then I just don't absorb as much. But if it's slowed down, and we're getting, like, these little vignettes of these characters, right, I'm taking in a lot more.
- 57:03Tad Eggleston: Well, but, I mean, even with the frantic pace, there's just something…
- 57:11Tad Eggleston: The less polished nature of it.
- 57:14Tyler Johnson: Correct, yep.
- 57:17Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 57:19Tad Eggleston: It gives it an energy that… that you generally… Joan.
- 57:25Tad Eggleston: get elsewhere.
- 57:27Tyler Johnson: It reminds me of… you remember when Kirkman was doing Die, Die, Die? Yeah. Right? And it was just non-stop…
- 57:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:35Tyler Johnson: killing, like, the whole thing. That was too… for me, that was just, like, it was almost too intense.
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: No, there's only so long you can maintain it.
- 57:43Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 57:44Tad Eggleston: Which is why… which is why it was time for this volume.
- 57:48Tyler Johnson: Yep.
- 57:48Tad Eggleston: But… but also, that's… that's like a natural…
- 57:56Tad Eggleston: Currents.
- 57:58Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense? And that's… I mean, if you really… if you step back and look at these first three volumes, like.
- 58:05Tad Eggleston: You've got your premise for first volume, and something that happens in the first volume requires the second volume, and this is the first time the characters can breathe, and rather than skipping through time, he's letting you see them breathe.
- 58:21Tad Eggleston: And you learn so much about them based on the
- 58:27Tad Eggleston: the ways they choose to breathe. Some of them actually try to, like.
- 58:32Tad Eggleston: take time off, and other ones, it's like, oh, I'm not being told to get in trouble, so I need to go find trouble.
- 58:38Tyler Johnson: Kinda. It kinda seems that way.
- 58:41Tad Eggleston: You know, particularly, what's her name?
- 58:44Tad Eggleston: This one.
- 58:47Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I don't remember names either.
- 58:49Tyler Johnson: But…
- 58:50Tad Eggleston: She's like, I must find trouble.
- 58:56Tad Eggleston: What do you mean, no trouble? No, no, no. Must find trouble.
- 59:02Tyler Johnson: I… I get it.
- 59:04Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 59:07Tyler Johnson: Well, let's see, that's about all I had to say about Copra.
- 59:10Tad Eggleston: I think, I think that's, what I have at the moment, too.
- 59:16Tyler Johnson: But that's okay, we're missing Phil, so it's not as…
- 59:19Tad Eggleston: Well, and… and, like, I mean, that's… I mean, this is… this is… and I think… I think with Copra, we'll wind up doing all of it rather than floating off, but remember, originally, we were gonna talk about One Piece as the main thing.
- 59:34Tad Eggleston: through One Piece, and then after, like, 5 weeks of… of having One Piece as our… as our…
- 59:40Tyler Johnson: Main thing.
- 59:41Tad Eggleston: great responsibilities, like, okay, maybe let's…
- 59:46Tad Eggleston: Dial it back for a while.
- 59:52Tyler Johnson: Yeah, I remember that. But we both have things.
- 59:54Tad Eggleston: to do, so let's just move along to three books we hope will be spectacular, and
- 1:00:01Tad Eggleston: It's the… it's the, Platinum Major Comics, so I don't…
- 1:00:05Tyler Johnson: It is sweet.
- 1:00:05Tad Eggleston: again.
- 1:00:06Tyler Johnson: Nope.
- 1:00:07Tad Eggleston: And I have 3 again, no double features here, but
- 1:00:13Tad Eggleston: even with 2 books that I know are spectacular, I have 9 for this coming week.
- 1:00:20Tyler Johnson: That's true.
- 1:00:22Tad Eggleston: So, so, books I know are spectacular. Second printing of, of New History of the DC Universe, the Dakota incident. Let's sell this one out, too. Force them to a third printing.
- 1:00:35Tad Eggleston: Maybe one day they'll decide that Milestone should, like, have monthly books again?
- 1:00:42Tyler Johnson: Alright.
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: Also, one of the, the, the absolute best early reader…
- 1:00:53Tad Eggleston: middle-grade graphic novels I've ever read. Penny and the Yeti from Jimmy Gasparo and Amber Aiken.
- 1:01:00Tyler Johnson: software.
- 1:01:01Tad Eggleston: Paper cuts this week.
- 1:01:03Tad Eggleston: But otherwise, books I hope will be spectacular. In Your Skin, number 1, from Iditya Biddikar and Som at Image. I always get excited when letterers make their own books.
- 1:01:17Tad Eggleston: I think that there tends to be nobody more knowledgeable of what makes a good comic book than the letterers, so, like.
- 1:01:25Tad Eggleston: when Hassan did a book, a while ago, and now Aditya is doing a book, I get excited.
- 1:01:34Tad Eggleston: forward to In Your Skin number one. We already talked about Powers 25, this is issue 8, and I'm just
- 1:01:41Tad Eggleston: Looking forward to my warm hug from… from Brian and Michael. American Caper, number 6 from Dan Houser, Laszlo, and David Lapham.
- 1:01:51Tad Eggleston: gotta love some David Lapham.
- 1:01:54Tad Eggleston: Rabagoo Race from
- 1:01:57Tad Eggleston: at Living the Line. This is… this just looks like a crazy, like, sci-fi, wacky races type thing, and looks fun. Speaking of Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips, we have The Peril of the Brutal Dark, an Ezra Kane Mystery number 3.
- 1:02:16Tad Eggleston: From DC Vertigo.
- 1:02:17Tyler Johnson: That is such a great story. I, I love it. It is really good.
- 1:02:22Tad Eggleston: We have Usagi Yojimbo Kaido, 84, number 2, from Zach Rosenberg and Jared Cullum at Dark Horse. Absolute Wonder Woman, number 19, from Kelly Thompson and Hayden Sherman at DC.
- 1:02:36Tad Eggleston: Brownfield Action Family, number 1, from Ted May at Revival House Press. This looks kinda cool, and it's under the radar. If I love it, we'll definitely be hearing more about it. And
- 1:02:47Tad Eggleston: You know, I love me some Spider-Man, I love me some Superman, put them together, and have lots of cool folks work on it.
- 1:02:55Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna read it! So, Spider-Man Superman No. 1 from Marvel DC, lots and lots of cool folks.
- 1:03:02Tyler Johnson: Do you… okay, so they did the Punisher, and
- 1:03:07Tyler Johnson: What was the last one that they did? Dc Monroe.
- 1:03:11Tad Eggleston: They did Dared… they did Deadpool Batman.
- 1:03:14Tyler Johnson: Deadpool Bearman, okay.
- 1:03:15Tad Eggleston: and Deadpool.
- 1:03:16Tyler Johnson: Thank you. So they did one… one for Marvel, one for DC.
- 1:03:19Tad Eggleston: They already do Superman, Spider-Man, and now this is Spider-Man Superman.
- 1:03:23Tyler Johnson: Correct.
- 1:03:24Tyler Johnson: I'm just not… I mean, granted, there may be great stories in it. I'm just not a fan of these cash grabs, you know what I mean?
- 1:03:32Tad Eggleston: I mean, are they cash grabs?
- 1:03:35Tyler Johnson: When you release it to… when you release two different versions, Yeah, back-to-back, so that…
- 1:03:43Tad Eggleston: Well, except that they're not two different versions.
- 1:03:46Tyler Johnson: They're different, right?
- 1:03:48Tad Eggleston: The stories are different.
- 1:03:49Tyler Johnson: That's what I'm saying, they're two… they're different things.
- 1:03:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I mean, I mean, and that's how they worked out the…
- 1:03:56Tad Eggleston: like, if DC got to publish…
- 1:04:01Tad Eggleston: I mean, think of them as two-issue anthology miniseries.
- 1:04:06Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:04:07Tad Eggleston: But one comes from DC, and one comes from Marvel, because that's how they managed to actually make them for the first time in decades.
- 1:04:14Tyler Johnson: That's how they came to the agreement. Okay.
- 1:04:18Tyler Johnson: Okay.
- 1:04:19Tad Eggleston: I mean, they're anthology comics, so it's not like…
- 1:04:25Tad Eggleston: You know… I think… I think… I think in the Deadpool…
- 1:04:31Tad Eggleston: Batman, there was one story that was a two-part story that was in the two comics, and all of the others.
- 1:04:39Tyler Johnson: I think so, yep.
- 1:04:40Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:04:41Tad Eggleston: So I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're doing here, too. And they release one from Marvel and one from DC.
- 1:04:48Tyler Johnson: Okay, I… I… yeah, I don't know.
- 1:04:51Tyler Johnson: I see what you're saying.
- 1:04:52Tad Eggleston: The… the…
- 1:04:53Tyler Johnson: I'm just not excited about it.
- 1:04:54Tad Eggleston: bajillion Variant covers? That's a cash grab.
- 1:04:59Tyler Johnson: Yeah, yup. Now, I'm not… I'm not… yeah.
- 1:05:03Tad Eggleston: The book itself…
- 1:05:06Tyler Johnson: Okay, I agree with you, I hear you.
- 1:05:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's not a cash grab, but it's the type of cash grab that they could have been doing every fucking year forever, and haven't done it since, like…
- 1:05:18Tyler Johnson: The 70s.
- 1:05:19Tad Eggleston: A LA Avengers in the… what? Late 80s?
- 1:05:24Tyler Johnson: 89, yep.
- 1:05:24Tad Eggleston: Something like that.
- 1:05:26Tyler Johnson: Yo.
- 1:05:27Tad Eggleston: So, like, it had been 30 years since the last time they did this cash grab.
- 1:05:32Tad Eggleston: But also, we've got collected versions of Orla!
- 1:05:36Tad Eggleston: From John Lees and Sally Cantorino, and Superman the Kryptonite Spectrum from W. Maxwell Prince and Martin Mrazzo.
- 1:05:43Tad Eggleston: so, yeah, do you have a giant-sized Trade Waiter graphic novel pick?
- 1:05:52Tyler Johnson: Oh, no. I don't.
- 1:05:55Tad Eggleston: then just say Orla.
- 1:05:56Tyler Johnson: Orla. That's what I'm gonna read. I'm gonna be reading Orla.
- 1:06:00Tad Eggleston: Have you not read it yet?
- 1:06:01Tyler Johnson: No, I have any issues, yeah. Oh, okay, yeah, yeah. But, but…
- 1:06:05Tad Eggleston: They should still read it. If they haven't read it in issues, they should read it.
- 1:06:10Tyler Johnson: Why?
- 1:06:10Tad Eggleston: If they have read it in issues, they should read it again.
- 1:06:13Tyler Johnson: with, my shop, I'm in a position to double buy things, like issues and graphic novels, because I can afford it now. And so, that's been help… that's been very helpful, to be able to, like, go, oh, cool, the graphic novel's out, I'll get that too.
- 1:06:29Tad Eggleston: Right. Alright, right.
- 1:06:31Tyler Johnson: Stop.
- 1:06:32Tad Eggleston: So, alrighty, cool! I think that's.
- 1:06:37Tyler Johnson: I think that's it.
- 1:06:38Tad Eggleston: That's all she wrote.
- 1:06:39Tyler Johnson: Well, that's all you wrote. You wrote… you wrote this, this script up.
- 1:06:45Tad Eggleston: That's all she wrote. We got some cool stuff coming this week that, is still under wraps, so…
- 1:06:52Tyler Johnson: Yes.
- 1:06:52Tad Eggleston: keep peeled. Though I can't say…
- 1:06:55Tyler Johnson: I wasn't sure if you wanted to talk about Monday or not.
- 1:06:59Tad Eggleston: No, no, no, I put in the notes…
- 1:07:01Tad Eggleston: Did you not see the chat that I shared?
- 1:07:06Tyler Johnson: Mmm, let me look.
- 1:07:08Tad Eggleston: a long time ago, because I wanted to make certain that it didn't slip.
- 1:07:11Tyler Johnson: I didn't say anything, I'm just asking. But yep, no, I see.
- 1:07:15Tad Eggleston: No, I know.
- 1:07:16Tyler Johnson: Yep. Okay, then never mind.
- 1:07:18Tad Eggleston: What I will say is that,
- 1:07:21Tad Eggleston: Couple hours from now, I'm talking to our buddies Ted Brandt and Ro Stein about their new graphic novel, which I've read the first half of, and… Yeah.
- 1:07:28Tad Eggleston: It's fantastic.
- 1:07:29Tyler Johnson: They might be coming up on most guests on the… most appearances on the podcast?
- 1:07:35Tad Eggleston: Mmm… I mean…
- 1:07:38Tyler Johnson: I mean, that's.
- 1:07:39Tad Eggleston: This is their fourth time?
- 1:07:41Tyler Johnson: That's pretty… for a team?
- 1:07:43Tyler Johnson: Maybe.
- 1:07:44Tad Eggleston: I mean… I mean, a team that lives together and never comes separately.
- 1:07:49Tyler Johnson: Oh, yeah, I didn't realize.
- 1:07:52Tad Eggleston: name, remember?
- 1:07:52Tyler Johnson: I didn't… yeah, I didn't realize they were…
- 1:07:54Tad Eggleston: They think of themselves as Brantenstein.
- 1:07:58Tyler Johnson: Okay, I did not… I didn't know that they were personally involved with each other.
- 1:08:03Tad Eggleston: Yes, yes, yes.
- 1:08:07Tyler Johnson: I didn't, I didn't know that.
- 1:08:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, Doug Wagner's got him beat.
- 1:08:11Tyler Johnson: Hey, I am getting.
- 1:08:13Tad Eggleston: John Lee still hasn't beat.
- 1:08:15Tyler Johnson: Yeah. Hey, Ted, I'm gonna wrap it up. I got a phone call that I need to take here.
- 1:08:19Tad Eggleston: Well, fine.
- 1:08:20Tyler Johnson: It's coming right now, it's from my theater people.
- 1:08:23Tyler Johnson: Okay, so, anywho, thanks for listening, and we'll catch you guys after the next page.
- 1:08:30Tyler Johnson: See ya!
