- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Monday the 22nd of
- 0:17April 2024. Welcome to a new week.
- 0:22Thanks for inviting me in. I hope that your day is looking
- 0:25good and your week is looking even better.
- 0:28Huh. I wonder what lies ahead for
- 0:30you, friend. It might be a big week coming
- 0:32up, or it might be a calmer one like my place where lots of
- 0:37people are still on school holidays.
- 0:39Good on you. Or you might not even have
- 0:42thought about your week as it looms ahead.
- 0:44And wherever you are on that spectrum, friend, great.
- 0:47Great to have your company as we carve out a little moment to
- 0:51come before God and hear what He has to teach us today through
- 0:55His Word. And if technology has done its
- 0:58job, you would notice that we have updated our logo.
- 1:02This is now our 4th year and the logo had remained the same.
- 1:05So it was time for a little bit of a refresh, a little bit of an
- 1:08update and somebody even suggested to me, hey Sean, you
- 1:11should make a new logo that matches the book of the Bible
- 1:15that you're currently reading a lot is an amazing idea.
- 1:18I'm not sure how we'd pull that off, but we won't rule anything
- 1:22out at this stage. But all that aside, let us do
- 1:25what we have gathered together to do as we continue to read
- 1:29through the story. If you remember from last week,
- 1:31we finished off the story with David and Bathsheba.
- 1:35David doing the wrong thing and he still doesn't realise what he
- 1:40has done. And today Nathan the prophet is
- 1:43going to come to him and in a stroke of absolute brilliance,
- 1:47convict him of his wrongdoing before God.
- 1:50So let's read it together, shall we?
- 1:51Let's read together Second Samuel chapter 12.
- 2:05So the Lord sent Nathan the Prophet to tell David this
- 2:09story. There were two men in a certain
- 2:12town. One was rich and one was poor.
- 2:15The rich man owned a great many sheep and cattle.
- 2:19The poor man owned nothing but one little lamb he had bought.
- 2:23He raised that little lamb and it grew up with his children.
- 2:27It ate from the man's own plate and drank from his cup.
- 2:31He cuddled it in his arms like a baby daughter.
- 2:35One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man, but
- 2:38instead of killing an animal from his own flock or herd, he
- 2:41took the poor man's lamb and killed it and prepared it for
- 2:46his guest. David was furious.
- 2:49As surely as the Lord lives, he vowed any man who would do such
- 2:55a thing deserves to die. He must repay 4 lambs to the
- 2:59poor man for the one he stole and for having no pity.
- 3:04Then Nathan said to David, You are that man.
- 3:09The Lord the God of Israel says, I anointed you king of Israel,
- 3:16and saved you from the power of Saul.
- 3:19I gave you your master's house and his wives and the kingdoms
- 3:24of Israel and Judah, and if that had not been enough, I would
- 3:28have given you much, much more. Why then have you despised the
- 3:34word of the Lord and done this horrible deed?
- 3:38For you have murdered your Uriah the Hittite with the sword of
- 3:42the Ammonites, and stolen his wife.
- 3:45From this time on, your family will live by the sword because
- 3:51you have despised me by taking your Rio's wife to be your own.
- 3:58This is what the Lord says. Because of what you have done, I
- 4:03will cause your own household to rebel against you.
- 4:07I will give your wives to another man before your very
- 4:10eyes, and he will go to bed with them in public view.
- 4:14You did it secretly, but I will make this happen to you openly
- 4:18in the sight of all Israel. Then David confessed to Nathan.
- 4:25I have sinned against the Lord, Nathan replied.
- 4:29Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won't die for this
- 4:34sin. Nevertheless, because you have
- 4:37shown utter contempt for the word of the Lord by doing this,
- 4:40your child will die. After Nathan returned to his
- 4:44home, the Lord sent a deadly illness to the child of David
- 4:49and Uriah's wife. David begged God to spare the
- 4:52child. He went without food and lay all
- 4:55night on the bare ground. The elders of his household
- 4:59pleaded with him to get up and eat with them, but he refused.
- 5:04Then on the 7th day, the child died.
- 5:08David's advisors were afraid to tell him he wouldn't listen to
- 5:12reason while the child was ill. They said what drastic thing
- 5:16will he do when we tell him the child is dead?
- 5:19When David saw them whispering, he realised what had happened.
- 5:24Is the child dead, He asked. Yes, they replied.
- 5:28He is dead. Then David got up from the
- 5:31ground, washed himself, put on lotions and changed his clothes.
- 5:36He went to the Tabernacle and worshipped the Lord.
- 5:39After that he returned to the palace and was served food and
- 5:44ate. His advisors were amazed.
- 5:46We don't understand you, they told him.
- 5:49While the child was still living.
- 5:50You wept and refused to eat. But now that the child is dead,
- 5:55you have stopped your morning and are eating again, David
- 5:59replied. I fasted and wept while the
- 6:02child was alive, For I said, perhaps the Lord will be
- 6:06gracious to me and let the child live.
- 6:08But why should I fast when he is dead?
- 6:11Can I bring him back again? I will go to him one day, but he
- 6:16cannot return to me. Then David comforted Bathsheba,
- 6:20his wife, and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave
- 6:25birth to her son, and David named him Solomon.
- 6:29The Lord loved the child and sent word through Nathan the
- 6:33Prophet that they should name him Jedediah, which means
- 6:37beloved of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded.
- 6:42Meanwhile Joe was fighting against Rubber, the capital of
- 6:46Amman, and he captured the royal fortifications.
- 6:50Joab sent messengers to tell David, I have fought against
- 6:54Rubber and captured its water supply.
- 6:56Now bring the rest of the army and capture the city, Otherwise
- 7:01I will capture it and get credit for the victory.
- 7:04Sir David gathered the rest of the army and went to rubber and
- 7:07he fought against it and captured it.
- 7:10David removed the crown from the King's head and it was placed on
- 7:14his own head. The crown was made of gold and
- 7:18set with gems, and it weighed 75 lbs.
- 7:22David took a vast amount of plunder from the city.
- 7:25He also made slaves of the people of Rabba and forced them
- 7:29to labour with sores, iron picks and iron axes, and to work in
- 7:34the brick kilns. That is how he dealt with the
- 7:37people of all the Ammonite towns.
- 7:39Then David and all the army returned to Jerusalem.
- 7:53Oh, Lord, there's so much in this chapter for us, so much as
- 7:58we learn about Your mercy and Your grace, Your faithfulness to
- 8:03promises, but ultimately the fact that our actions still have
- 8:07repercussions. And Lord, also at the end of
- 8:10this story we hear of this incredible, faithful general
- 8:15Joab, who refuses to take glory for himself but always offers it
- 8:20up to his King. Lord, may we be the same as
- 8:25Joab. May we every time that you grant
- 8:29us victory, every time you bless us, help us always give the
- 8:33credit back to you. It's so easy to claim it for
- 8:37ourselves as the world looks at us and congratulates us for a
- 8:41job well done. But we know that it's only
- 8:44through Your grace that we enjoy what we enjoy in our lives.
- 8:50So, Lord, may we always point back to You.
- 8:53May we always offer you the glory.
- 8:56And so we do that now. We just praise you and give you
- 9:00the glory for all of the good things that you give us in our
- 9:04lives. We are so grateful for them and
- 9:09we are so grateful for the skills and the talents that you
- 9:12have given us to be able to do what we do.
- 9:15But let it always be done in your name, for your honour, our
- 9:20wonderful, mighty God, and we pray all these things in the
- 9:25saving name of Jesus. Ah, man.
