Latest / The Daily Writer / What to Look for in a Collaborator
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to the Daily Writer, where we help writers become authors of their own lives.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: As I look back over the projects that I've enjoyed writing the most over the years, they've always enjoyed great collaborators.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Now, it doesn't necessarily mean that I co-write those projects with people, but there have always been great people involved in the projects that made them really, really fun.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Collaborators can definitely include co-writers, but other people like clients, editors, designers, advisors, coaches, publishers, reviewers, or even event coordinators, those kinds of people can play a huge role in a book's eventual success.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: When you're partnering with other people, it's important to be intentional.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: So what should you look for in a great collaborator, no matter what shape that collaboration takes?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I suggest that you look for four qualities.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Number one is a positive spirit.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: You want to work with people who are optimistic and cheerful.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: We don't want to allow any Debbie Downers here in this place because we don't need that negative energy.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Number two is you want to look for good chemistry.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: And the question here is: do you click with this person?
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Do you have fun together?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Don't overlook this element because it's really important, because if you don't have the same general vibe or attitude toward life, the partnership probably is not going to work very well.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Number three, a desire to help you succeed.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: They have to understand that the greatest success in life is helping other people be more successful.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Because when one person wins, then other people win as well.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: And number four, excellence in their work.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Are they world-class in what they do?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: If so, their skills are going to elevate your partnership on multiple levels.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Now, with all that said though, here's the plot twist.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: You should not only look for those qualities in other people, you have to have those qualities too.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: After all, other people will be looking for you to be a great collaborator for them because it's a two-way street.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, it's almost impossible to be successful on your own.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So seek out partnerships where you can help others and they can help you as well.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: You know, the ability to collaborate with others is just one quality of success for writers.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And I talk about lots of other qualities for success in a book that I wrote for my son a few years ago.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: It's called 18 Words to Live By A Father's Wisdom on What Matters Most.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: And the book is a super quick read, and it's perfect for giving you a shot of inspiration when you need it the most.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: You can grab a copy of the book via the link in the show notes.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Hey, as always, thanks for listening.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Keep writing, keep showing up, and I'll see you tomorrow.
