Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Chuck Norris was chasing the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The rex was
- 0:06Speaker 2: not chasing the jeep. Murray, Murray, you there. You love sandwiches. Huh,
- 0:11Speaker 2: let's go to eighty.
- 0:13Speaker 3: He was bo.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Wow that Prime Time. Maybe I had a crush on
- 0:18Speaker 1: Betty Rubbell.
- 0:19Speaker 4: I honestly, until after the segment ended and we went
- 0:22Speaker 4: to commercial break, had no idea that Jonathan Coachman was black.
- 0:25Speaker 1: He caught them the game last night, although they won
- 0:28Speaker 1: the game. You're listening just to Godson Company.
- 0:31Speaker 4: It is the Godson Company presented by Van Duel and
- 0:34Speaker 4: the Vanduel Sportsbook Giants General manager. Joe Shane's going to
- 0:37Speaker 4: join us in about ten minutes. Excited for that. He's
- 0:40Speaker 4: a friend. They'll say it on the front end. He's
- 0:41Speaker 4: a friend. He deserves better from that giant fan base. Taylor,
- 0:45Speaker 4: you'll laugh at this. Mikey A and I were having
- 0:47Speaker 4: a discussion last night as it relates to Joe Shane,
- 0:52Speaker 4: because this is a man who when he was in Buffalo,
- 0:55Speaker 4: was part of the group that traded up, identified that
- 0:59Speaker 4: Josh Allen was going to be this good and was
- 1:01Speaker 4: part of the group that traded up to get the
- 1:04Speaker 4: Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen, and then he comes to New
- 1:07Speaker 4: York and he gets your neighbors, and he gets you Thibbideaux,
- 1:10Speaker 4: and he gets your Scataboo, and he gets your Molik neighbors.
- 1:15Speaker 4: And the drafts, for the most part, have been pretty good.
- 1:18Speaker 1: The results haven't been great.
- 1:20Speaker 4: But the draft's been pretty good, so much so that
- 1:23Speaker 4: the roster is good enough to attract one of the
- 1:25Speaker 4: great coaches in the history of the NFL in John Harbaugh.
- 1:29Speaker 1: He chose to be the Giants head coach.
- 1:31Speaker 4: And I promise you had that roster not been good enough,
- 1:35Speaker 4: John Harbaugh would not be the head coach of the
- 1:37Speaker 4: New York Giants today. But the conversation we were having me.
- 1:40Speaker 1: And Mikey A. Taylor was do you know what Jet.
- 1:43Speaker 4: Fans would give to have a general manager like Joe Shane?
- 1:50Speaker 4: And so that it morphed into if it doesn't work
- 1:53Speaker 4: out with the Giants, me and Mikey will introduce them
- 1:56Speaker 4: to the people with the New York Jets And I'm like, my.
- 2:01Speaker 1: What are you talking about.
- 2:02Speaker 4: He's Joe Shane, the GM of the Giant's former assistant
- 2:06Speaker 4: GM of the Bills. He's inside that division forever. He's
- 2:09Speaker 4: in that city, He's in that market. I said, he
- 2:12Speaker 4: doesn't need our help being introduced to the New York Jets,
- 2:15Speaker 4: to which Mikey responded, but does he know Joe Beningo?
- 2:22Speaker 5: Does he even know Joe Biningo? Oh no, does he
- 2:25Speaker 5: even have his number?
- 2:26Speaker 4: So the only reason I bring this up is I
- 2:27Speaker 4: have asked Mikey at the end to ask a totally
- 2:30Speaker 4: clunky question, Uh, do you know Joe Banningo, not just
- 2:34Speaker 4: of Joe Shane, of every guest we have moving forward?
- 2:38Speaker 6: Mikey thinking he has better connections than the Joe Shane
- 2:42Speaker 6: in the NFL.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Does he even have Joe Beningo's number?
- 2:46Speaker 1: That's my question. Listen.
- 2:47Speaker 4: The key to getting the jets GM job, and perhaps
- 2:49Speaker 4: it's why we've been bad for so long, is you
- 2:51Speaker 4: got to get through Joe Bininga.
- 2:53Speaker 7: Yes, he might have Woody Johnson's number, he might have
- 2:59Speaker 7: Darren moo She's number, he might have everybody in that
- 3:02Speaker 7: organization's money number.
- 3:04Speaker 5: But does he have Joe Beningo's.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Number, that's right, and his approval? Yes?
- 3:07Speaker 6: Yes, So for the people outside of the New York market,
- 3:10Speaker 6: do you guys want to explain who Joe Beningo is.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It's a midday host Wfan legendary.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I would put him on the Mount Rushmore of WFAN
- 3:17Speaker 4: host Come, I would, no, I would. You started out
- 3:20Speaker 4: as a caller, a caller who parlaid it into a
- 3:23Speaker 4: midday show, leading into Mike and the Man Dog.
- 3:27Speaker 8: This was the guy that got Robert Salah in trouble
- 3:30Speaker 8: because he was him and Robert Saller exchanging text messages
- 3:33Speaker 8: on how to best work the jets going forward.
- 3:36Speaker 5: So don't tell me he doesn't have power. Joe Beeningo's
- 3:38Speaker 5: the guy.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Now, perhaps I got carried away and said he's on
- 3:41Speaker 4: the Mount Rushmore of Wfan host of all time. I'm
- 3:44Speaker 4: not let me think about it, Mike Chris, Okay, we
- 3:46Speaker 4: check check?
- 3:47Speaker 1: Can they be one? Those are one? Mike?
- 3:49Speaker 4: And then don I miss check? Okay, that's true. Uh,
- 3:52Speaker 4: he's on the Mount Rushmore. And then I really I
- 3:55Speaker 4: believe I am.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I wrong here, mikey. I believe it's Steve Summers and
- 3:59Speaker 1: Joe Beningo. I'm not even joking.
- 4:01Speaker 4: And by the way, Steve Summers is a book out
- 4:03Speaker 4: and I have demanded that Tailor get him on the show.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I mean the schmoozer about that.
- 4:07Speaker 5: I'm putting salakata on there, or of course you work.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Jesus had a cup of coffee. It was a delicious cup. Though, Well,
- 4:17Speaker 1: who are you taking off?
- 4:20Speaker 5: Not Joe, Jo, Joe, Maybe Joe over Steve Sommers. Let's
- 4:27Speaker 5: see if we can get Joe on.
- 4:28Speaker 4: So listen, if the mount Rushmore consisted of five or
- 4:31Speaker 4: six faces, Jo, it's only four brabs are get carried.
- 4:38Speaker 4: I'm leaving off some major names, John Manko m the Makeman,
- 4:43Speaker 4: Eddie Cazari.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And the great Al Dukes of course, and Boomer Hm Boomer.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Boomer is deserving him consideration. Is he done?
- 4:57Speaker 6: Yeah, he's been there, He's been there so long.
- 4:59Speaker 4: At this point, I think wfan really worried about what
- 5:02Speaker 4: would happen once I Miss went away because the thought
- 5:06Speaker 4: process so it is, yes, we're twenty four hours, twenty
- 5:08Speaker 4: four to seven radio station, but I Miss did talk
- 5:11Speaker 4: and the numbers were so monstrous that the lead in
- 5:14Speaker 4: for the midday show and then Mike and the Mad
- 5:16Speaker 4: Dog was so massive they just they just couldn't turn
- 5:19Speaker 4: it down, and so they went with imis. It was
- 5:22Speaker 4: great for the station, but they were really concerned when
- 5:24Speaker 4: I miss left, and how are we going to fill
- 5:26Speaker 4: the void? And if I asked you thirty years ago, hey,
- 5:29Speaker 4: they're gonna fill the void of don Imis with Boomer
- 5:32Speaker 4: asias it, you would have laughed me out of the room.
- 5:36Speaker 4: But Boomer's done it. I mean, Boomer's had a Hall
- 5:38Speaker 4: of Fame radio career. I would say Boomer's radio career
- 5:41Speaker 4: and his media career was better than his football career.
- 5:44Speaker 4: And his football career was great.
- 5:46Speaker 6: But that huh So for somebody who's not as familiar
- 5:51Speaker 6: with Steve Sommers, how would you describe his radio Because
- 5:54Speaker 6: I'm looking at his memoir of his book and I
- 5:56Speaker 6: actually saw it when I was at Barnes and Noble
- 5:59Speaker 6: this last weekend. His memoir was released in November twenty
- 6:03Speaker 6: twenty five. Me here you there, my three decades overnight
- 6:08Speaker 6: under the covers, schmoozing sports as Captain Midnight for WFA.
- 6:13Speaker 6: A little wordy of a title.
- 6:14Speaker 1: No, it's not heid as many words as he wants me.
- 6:18Speaker 1: There you there, However he said it. That's the way
- 6:20Speaker 1: he started just about every show.
- 6:22Speaker 4: He's the godfather of sports radio, him and Ed Kaplan,
- 6:27Speaker 4: And hey, that's how I would describe him. He was
- 6:32Speaker 4: a guy in the overnights. You were under your sheets,
- 6:34Speaker 4: you were under your covers, you were there. He was here.
- 6:38Speaker 4: He was the schmoozer and he was fantastic. He was great,
- 6:43Speaker 4: perfect boys to put you to sleep.
- 6:45Speaker 6: I believe Jerry Seinfeld wrote the forward.
- 6:47Speaker 1: In his book.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Jerry Seinfeld loves it, doesn't love Salakata, loves him just
- 6:52Speaker 4: enough to invite him to a spring training game, but
- 6:54Speaker 4: not give him his number. Okay, I promise you that
- 6:58Speaker 4: Steve Summers and Jerry Seinfeld that broke bread together.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Okay, I'm telling you I'm passover. How about that? Wow? Yeah,
- 7:06Speaker 1: no big Jewish holidays together. I'm speculating. I have no
- 7:09Speaker 1: idea if they've ever done it to friends. They already
- 7:13Speaker 1: wrote him forward, he did forward? Who wrote my forward?
- 7:17Speaker 1: I forget always dead? Who guessie? Jerry's was way nicer.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Levantar Matt Rushmore of South Florida radio host at Kaplan,
- 7:33Speaker 4: Hank Manditch me Joe Shane next. Good to see my
- 7:49Speaker 4: friend Joe Shane, general manager of the New York Football Giants,
- 7:53Speaker 4: kind enough to join us during a busy time for him.
- 7:56Speaker 4: The last few months have been kind of busy for you, Joe,
- 7:59Speaker 4: it's been it's been quite the roller coaster.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Uh, what, Mikey, is this a busy time? I know
- 8:04Speaker 1: last week was a busy time.
- 8:05Speaker 5: But is this a busy time?
- 8:07Speaker 6: I feel like it's always there, right.
- 8:10Speaker 1: You're talking to me. I feel like it's always a
- 8:12Speaker 1: busy time for Joe. Shane.
- 8:13Speaker 4: It's been quite the roller coast in the last few months,
- 8:15Speaker 4: has it not.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Yeah, it's been. Uh, it's been a lot of fun.
- 8:19Speaker 9: Though again obviously going back the season didn't go the
- 8:21Speaker 9: way we wanted to, so we can probably start back
- 8:23Speaker 9: in September. But yeah, so it's been a long nine
- 8:25Speaker 9: or ten months. But it's been a lot of fun.
- 8:27Speaker 9: You know, the coaching search and being able to to
- 8:31Speaker 9: land coach Harball and you know, get him as our
- 8:33Speaker 9: head coach, and then getting right to work with the
- 8:35Speaker 9: coaching staff, and then free agency, you know, combine draft.
- 8:39Speaker 5: It's just been it's.
- 8:40Speaker 9: Been a lot of fun, a lot of hard work,
- 8:42Speaker 9: a lot of long days, but again, feel really good
- 8:45Speaker 9: about where we are, you know, from from where we
- 8:47Speaker 9: started when when coach was hired, and uh, looking forward
- 8:50Speaker 9: to the season.
- 8:51Speaker 4: What has surprised you the most about John Harba, the
- 8:54Speaker 4: person Joe oh.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Man, there's a lot.
- 8:57Speaker 9: He's a he's a special individual. He's a he's a
- 8:59Speaker 9: great football coach, which a great leader. You know, our
- 9:02Speaker 9: players have been in for three weeks now, so just
- 9:04Speaker 9: the messaging at team meetings, how well thought out. That
- 9:08Speaker 9: is the why why we do everything. And you know,
- 9:11Speaker 9: just his work ethic. You know again, he's he's the
- 9:13Speaker 9: first one in, you know, in the building in the morning.
- 9:16Speaker 5: I mean, I don't even know what time.
- 9:16Speaker 9: He gets here before, and.
- 9:20Speaker 1: You should be getting there before him. I just want
- 9:22Speaker 1: to tell you that again. I tried.
- 9:24Speaker 6: I used to.
- 9:24Speaker 9: I used to be the first one in, but not anymore.
- 9:26Speaker 9: I'm like, I can't get up any earlier then he
- 9:30Speaker 9: used to beat me in. I think some of it's
- 9:31Speaker 9: his competitiveness too, because the first couple of days he
- 9:33Speaker 9: didn't and then after about the fourth day.
- 9:35Speaker 5: I haven't beat him in since.
- 9:36Speaker 6: So uh.
- 9:37Speaker 9: But no, he's I mean, his his work ethic is
- 9:40Speaker 9: he's got a plan well prepared. You know, how he
- 9:43Speaker 9: how he leads the coaching staff, how he leads the building,
- 9:45Speaker 9: the players. So just been really impressive with really impressed
- 9:48Speaker 9: with him. Is an individual coworker, you know, a colleague
- 9:51Speaker 9: of mine, you know, working hand in hand through you know,
- 9:53Speaker 9: getting the staffing, you know, the plan for free agency.
- 9:57Speaker 5: The draft has just been it's been a lot of fun.
- 10:00Speaker 4: And how would you characterize your guys relationship right now,
- 10:04Speaker 4: because you've had some time to that work together, maybe
- 10:07Speaker 4: bond a little bit through the doing of the NFL Draft.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Where is your relationship with John right now?
- 10:13Speaker 5: Yeah, it's great.
- 10:14Speaker 9: Again, we're I mean we probably grew up maybe I
- 10:17Speaker 9: don't know, two hours from each other.
- 10:19Speaker 5: You know, Midwest guys.
- 10:20Speaker 6: His dad was a coach.
- 10:21Speaker 9: You know, my dad coached a lot of my stuff
- 10:23Speaker 9: as a kid. You know, just two hard work in
- 10:25Speaker 9: Midwest guys that love football and just want to win,
- 10:27Speaker 9: and we're going to do whatever it takes. And work is,
- 10:29Speaker 9: however hard we need to to ultimately achieve that.
- 10:33Speaker 5: So it was it was easy for.
- 10:36Speaker 9: Us to get along from the beginning, you know, again
- 10:38Speaker 9: just talking football, putting a plan together, and you know,
- 10:42Speaker 9: again then the execution of it.
- 10:43Speaker 5: So it's been great.
- 10:45Speaker 4: I have said this a number of times in your
- 10:47Speaker 4: defense and I'll continue to say it that you were
- 10:50Speaker 4: the guy that put together the roster that was attractive
- 10:53Speaker 4: enough for a coach like John Harbaugh to say, hey,
- 10:56Speaker 4: I want to take that job, and so the criticism
- 10:59Speaker 4: of UC means it seems ridiculous from my standpoint. But
- 11:02Speaker 4: again I'm biased because I love you and i'm your friend,
- 11:05Speaker 4: and I know you've.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Done a good job.
- 11:07Speaker 4: But that criticism seems ridiculous to me because you did.
- 11:10Speaker 4: You put together a roster that was good enough for
- 11:13Speaker 4: a Hall of Fame coach to want to come coach
- 11:15Speaker 4: that roster.
- 11:17Speaker 9: I appreciate you saying that, but at the same time,
- 11:19Speaker 9: I got to look in the mirror, the records, the record,
- 11:21Speaker 9: and but again, just you put your head down and
- 11:24Speaker 9: you keep going to work, and you know eventually we're
- 11:27Speaker 9: going to look up and you know there's hopefully it's
- 11:28Speaker 9: gonna be a talented roster. And you know, I feel
- 11:30Speaker 9: like we're trending in that direction and you know, getting
- 11:33Speaker 9: the ability to you know, Adam elak Neighbors a couple
- 11:36Speaker 9: of years ago, and then Abdul and Jackson and you
- 11:38Speaker 9: know what we've done in free agency, and I feel
- 11:40Speaker 9: really good about where we are right now.
- 11:42Speaker 5: And it takes time. These things take time, and you're
- 11:45Speaker 5: not going to be perfect.
- 11:46Speaker 9: And I'm always you know, doing self reflection and what
- 11:48Speaker 9: can I do better and where do we make mistakes
- 11:50Speaker 9: and what went right in the process, So you know,
- 11:53Speaker 9: always looking to do better and everything that we do.
- 11:55Speaker 9: But you know, again it's we were able to get
- 11:58Speaker 9: coach tar Ball. We had a bunch of good candidates
- 12:00Speaker 9: we interviewed, and you know, again getting getting him was
- 12:03Speaker 9: you know, very important terms of the trajectory of the
- 12:05Speaker 9: organization in this team.
- 12:06Speaker 1: You mentioned Malik dabors. I loved John's response.
- 12:09Speaker 4: When you know, Malik was on the Micaeh Parsons podcast
- 12:12Speaker 4: during the draft and that's where we are in twenty twenties,
- 12:15Speaker 4: six Win Sports media and he's commenting on the pick
- 12:18Speaker 4: of r Vel Reese All just simply.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Said, who gives a bleep?
- 12:23Speaker 4: Like it's gotta be refreshing to have a coach who's
- 12:26Speaker 4: who's got so much job security, who was so secure
- 12:29Speaker 4: in his own self that he's just like, hey, he
- 12:31Speaker 4: said what he said, I love.
- 12:32Speaker 1: The kid, and who cares?
- 12:33Speaker 6: You know, yeah, yeah, it was.
- 12:36Speaker 1: It was great.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Malig did he came.
- 12:37Speaker 9: He was the first person, the other in Coach Tarball
- 12:39Speaker 9: that I saw in the building on Friday morning. He
- 12:41Speaker 9: was he was up in our office early, and you know,
- 12:43Speaker 9: we had it. We had a great conversation. And I
- 12:45Speaker 9: love Malik, like the guy loves balls, He studies college film,
- 12:49Speaker 9: he knows the NFL inside out, he knows players, so
- 12:52Speaker 9: he's truly.
- 12:53Speaker 5: Passionate about it.
- 12:54Speaker 9: So you know, again, you know, it didn't come from
- 12:56Speaker 9: any you know, what Malik said, we were fine with
- 12:59Speaker 9: and we had a good convers station with him.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Were you guys trying to convince Dexter Lawrence to stay?
- 13:04Speaker 1: How did that work out towards.
- 13:05Speaker 4: Towards the end of that Towards the end of that deal,
- 13:08Speaker 4: he ended up trading him to Cincinnati.
- 13:10Speaker 9: Yeah, we Again, Dexter is a guy that was, you know,
- 13:13Speaker 9: productive for us throughout us time here and you know, again,
- 13:16Speaker 9: tremendous asset to the organization. And and I love Dexter,
- 13:19Speaker 9: and you know, we there's a business side of it too,
- 13:21Speaker 9: and you know, we just couldn't come to agreement on
- 13:23Speaker 9: the business side, and you know, that's what it was.
- 13:26Speaker 9: And we were able to get, you know, what we
- 13:28Speaker 9: felt was good value in terms of the tenth pick
- 13:29Speaker 9: of the draft, and you know, so.
- 13:32Speaker 5: We went ahead and made the move.
- 13:34Speaker 8: Do you ever just want to have a normal off season,
- 13:36Speaker 8: like where somebody where you don't have to deal with
- 13:39Speaker 8: some major media thing about some player that wants this
- 13:42Speaker 8: or that or trading picks or any of that.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Just come golfing with me every Friday.
- 13:46Speaker 9: Jesus.
- 13:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I miss those days. I miss those days. Care
- 13:50Speaker 5: in the world. Yeah, No, it's always something.
- 13:52Speaker 9: It's always you know, we got ninety players in here
- 13:55Speaker 9: and staff, and yeah, that's what that's what the job is.
- 13:57Speaker 5: I can tell people, you know, generally generally managing a
- 13:59Speaker 5: lot of things.
- 14:02Speaker 9: Who on the zoom doesn't want more money. I'm sure
- 14:03Speaker 9: you guys think you're worth more money. I mean, everybody's gone,
- 14:10Speaker 9: you guys raised.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I'm making I'm good.
- 14:16Speaker 5: At least one person on.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Here is I like that were so good. Were you
- 14:21Speaker 1: surprised that Reese was there at number five?
- 14:24Speaker 5: I was? I was.
- 14:25Speaker 9: We thought it was a really good football player, and
- 14:28Speaker 9: you know, through a lot of our mock drafts and
- 14:30Speaker 9: our simulations, we just we we didn't really see a
- 14:32Speaker 9: path where where he would be there, and we knew
- 14:35Speaker 9: if one or two players, you know, when you know,
- 14:38Speaker 9: when Bailey went to that's kind of where it started.
- 14:40Speaker 9: The Jets did a really good job of keeping their
- 14:43Speaker 9: keeping that close to the vest, and nobody really knew
- 14:45Speaker 9: until they were on the clock whether it was Bailey
- 14:47Speaker 9: or Reese. So once Bailey went, we thought there was
- 14:50Speaker 9: an outside chance that that he.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Could be there.
- 14:53Speaker 9: You know, we we we figured Arizona was going to
- 14:55Speaker 9: take love, didn't really know what Tennessee was going to
- 14:58Speaker 9: do it for. And you know when they went to
- 15:01Speaker 9: Carneal Tate, you know, we're staggered to get Rvil Reese there.
- 15:04Speaker 1: If it wasn't Reese, where you going Bailey?
- 15:08Speaker 5: Uh no, I mean Bailey wasn't wasn't available. So no,
- 15:11Speaker 5: we we knew.
- 15:12Speaker 4: About meaning had the Jets taken reason Bailey was still
- 15:16Speaker 4: what was the plan if Reese wasn't there, right, we.
- 15:18Speaker 9: Had enough intail to know that, you know, we're we're
- 15:21Speaker 9: almost one hundred percent confident that Bailey would not be
- 15:23Speaker 9: there no matter, no matter what the scenario was, one
- 15:27Speaker 9: of those other teams would have taken him. So we
- 15:29Speaker 9: never even really walked through that. Now, he's not an
- 15:31Speaker 9: off the wall, he's not an off the ball linebacker.
- 15:33Speaker 9: He's he's a he's a true edge guy, you know,
- 15:37Speaker 9: so that would that would have been a hard one
- 15:39Speaker 9: for us, just with with the current group.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Of course, yes, yes, when he gets good. H Well, listen,
- 15:44Speaker 1: you could have.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Him in three or four years when the when the
- 15:47Speaker 4: Jets f up his career and uh, and you'll be
- 15:49Speaker 4: there to swoop in and take him. Okay, I said that,
- 15:51Speaker 4: not Joe Shay, my friend, would never say that about
- 15:53Speaker 4: the New York Jets. I am wondering what you love
- 15:56Speaker 4: so much about Malachi Fields that you traded two picks,
- 15:58Speaker 4: traded a third or fourth next year in a very
- 16:01Speaker 4: deep draft next year. What'd you like so much about
- 16:04Speaker 4: him that you moved up to get him.
- 16:07Speaker 5: Yeah, we needed at it. We felt like we needed
- 16:08Speaker 5: at a receiver to our group.
- 16:10Speaker 9: And you know, he has a different body type than
- 16:13Speaker 9: what we currently have, you know, six four and a
- 16:14Speaker 9: half two hundred and eighteen pounds, you know, and sometimes
- 16:18Speaker 9: you get these guys that are have that type of
- 16:20Speaker 9: size and maybe they can't drop their weight or their
- 16:22Speaker 9: stiff they can't, you know, they can't open up. Malachi's
- 16:24Speaker 9: a guy that can drop his weight and he can
- 16:26Speaker 9: run routes. He's got a tremendous catch radius, you know,
- 16:29Speaker 9: strong after the catch, you know, on the you know,
- 16:31Speaker 9: two year study, you know a little bit more versatility
- 16:33Speaker 9: in his routes at Virginia than what he maybe did
- 16:35Speaker 9: this year. But was a really productive player for Notre Dame.
- 16:39Speaker 9: So a guy we really liked. And yeah, we gave
- 16:41Speaker 9: up you know, basically a fifth this year and you
- 16:44Speaker 9: know fourth next year, which is valued at a fifth
- 16:47Speaker 9: this year. So you know, we thought the player was
- 16:50Speaker 9: coveted by you know, the staff, and you know we
- 16:53Speaker 9: were excited to get him.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Golick's such a homer. I meant to tell you guys this.
- 16:56Speaker 1: I got a text for.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Both Golick and Golick Junior when Joe Shane and Hardball
- 17:00Speaker 4: selected Malachi Fields and go accept me in text, best
- 17:04Speaker 4: pick in the draft by your boy, Joe Shade.
- 17:07Speaker 1: You're a homer. You have no idea if that's going
- 17:11Speaker 1: to be the best pick of the drift.
- 17:13Speaker 5: I hope he's right.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Go ahead, Taylor, I'm sorry, Joe.
- 17:18Speaker 6: What is the feeling like when you guys are like
- 17:20Speaker 6: a pick away and then a team trades in front
- 17:23Speaker 6: of you?
- 17:25Speaker 5: Yeah, it's you.
- 17:27Speaker 9: You usually have a pretty good feel for maybe who
- 17:29Speaker 9: they're coming up for or what they're doing. Not all
- 17:31Speaker 9: the time, but you have an idea, so your heart
- 17:35Speaker 9: does stop because you know, sometimes they come out there
- 17:38Speaker 9: for a reason, or sometimes you know you're not guaranteed
- 17:41Speaker 9: to get a deal done with that team, so maybe
- 17:42Speaker 9: you start three teams ahead of us, and the team
- 17:45Speaker 9: in front of us is the one.
- 17:46Speaker 5: You can finally get a deal done with.
- 17:47Speaker 9: So sometimes it's targeted because hey, we think the Giants
- 17:50Speaker 9: are going to take player X. And then sometimes it's
- 17:52Speaker 9: just you finally got somebody that can do a deal
- 17:54Speaker 9: with you and you're coming up to get a player
- 17:55Speaker 9: that you want to take.
- 17:56Speaker 5: But yeah, your your heart does drop.
- 17:58Speaker 9: I mean regardless whether so many trades for the pick
- 17:59Speaker 9: or if there's a player there you're excited to get
- 18:02Speaker 9: and tell that team in front of you picks and
- 18:03Speaker 9: it's not your guy.
- 18:04Speaker 5: You know, you do have some anxiety.
- 18:07Speaker 3: How often in the draft room are you guys surprised
- 18:10Speaker 3: with something that happens ahead of you, behind you, or
- 18:14Speaker 3: how often are you almost like laughing at like they
- 18:16Speaker 3: took him.
- 18:19Speaker 9: Well, you know, try not to do that because some
- 18:21Speaker 9: people may do that to us. Again, everybody has their.
- 18:24Speaker 5: You know, you never know, but yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 9: It's based off of where you where you have players,
- 18:29Speaker 9: or you know, maybe it's a guy that had character
- 18:31Speaker 9: issues and was off your board or some sort of issue,
- 18:34Speaker 9: whatever it is. So you know, sometimes you'll get a
- 18:36Speaker 9: chuckle out of it, but it takes a couple of
- 18:37Speaker 9: years to let.
- 18:38Speaker 5: It play out. And maybe they were right, maybe you
- 18:40Speaker 5: were wrong.
- 18:41Speaker 9: You know what what you hope for is the players
- 18:43Speaker 9: that you take are the right ones, and that's what
- 18:45Speaker 9: matters the most.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Did you feel like you and John were working together
- 18:49Speaker 4: in tandem on the draft or did you feel like
- 18:51Speaker 4: this is this is John's draft and I just got
- 18:53Speaker 4: to kind of spackle where I can.
- 18:56Speaker 9: No, I was a great partnership, you know, or my
- 18:59Speaker 9: skout did have? You know, they did a phenomenal job,
- 19:03Speaker 9: you know.
- 19:03Speaker 5: Throughout the process setting the board.
- 19:04Speaker 9: You know, coach Charball does a ton of film on
- 19:07Speaker 9: the the draft. You know, we give him those lists
- 19:09Speaker 9: of you know, here here's the guys to look at,
- 19:10Speaker 9: and then he would come in the meetings and you know,
- 19:13Speaker 9: he had some opinions on players and would speak up
- 19:16Speaker 9: and knows what he wants the football team to look like.
- 19:18Speaker 9: And then you know, as the draft got closer, you
- 19:20Speaker 9: kind of narrow the circle and you know a lot
- 19:24Speaker 9: of really good dialogue, a lot of really good conversations,
- 19:26Speaker 9: a lot of film sessions together, you know. Again, so
- 19:30Speaker 9: really good process in place to lead to what we
- 19:33Speaker 9: feel was really good decisions.
- 19:35Speaker 6: Joe, how did you guys land on Francis Mauinoa at ten.
- 19:40Speaker 9: Yeah, he was a a player we really liked throughout
- 19:43Speaker 9: the process.
- 19:44Speaker 5: Again, he was consistently, you.
- 19:46Speaker 9: Know, probably a top ten player on our board starting
- 19:48Speaker 9: back in you know, September when we start looking at
- 19:50Speaker 9: these guys. So when you when you have a young
- 19:52Speaker 9: quarterback like Jackson Dart, you want to keep him on
- 19:54Speaker 9: his feet. And you know, it doesn't matter who you
- 19:57Speaker 9: have at receiver, what weapons you have, if the quarterback
- 19:59Speaker 9: can play on his feet, it's not gonna matter. So
- 20:03Speaker 9: it was important for us to get c C you know,
- 20:05Speaker 9: we got We brought back Jermaine and Luminyort right tackle,
- 20:07Speaker 9: we got at at left, John Running at left guard,
- 20:09Speaker 9: and then John Michael Schmidt at center. So like the
- 20:12Speaker 9: offensive line, you know, getting along with some of the
- 20:15Speaker 9: you know, the Isaiah Likely edition, you know, Malachi Fields,
- 20:19Speaker 9: you know, brought in a full ball full back and
- 20:21Speaker 9: Recard so excited about some of the offensive editions that
- 20:23Speaker 9: we've added.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Does Jackson say to you before the draft, Hey, Joe,
- 20:28Speaker 4: Hey John, do me a favor, give me a fucking tackle,
- 20:30Speaker 4: like I need some help here.
- 20:33Speaker 1: How does that go?
- 20:33Speaker 9: Doub Well, we got him an offensive lineman and a receiver.
- 20:37Speaker 9: You know, most quarterbacks be happy with that combination. Happy
- 20:41Speaker 9: with the combination for sure.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yes, I'm interested here because I care about you, and
- 20:45Speaker 4: because I think you're deserve, deserving, and I think you're
- 20:47Speaker 4: great at your job.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Just the relationship with you and John.
- 20:50Speaker 4: You feel like it's gotten stronger since he first took
- 20:53Speaker 4: over as the.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Head coach of the Giants. You don't like because Joe.
- 20:56Speaker 4: For me, it's difficult right even after the draft what
- 20:59Speaker 4: many people people would consider a good draft and a
- 21:01Speaker 4: roster that is good enough to win that division. I
- 21:04Speaker 4: see the two of you up on the podium together,
- 21:07Speaker 4: and I don't see a guy that's sweating the rumors
- 21:09Speaker 4: that he might be fired at the end of the week.
- 21:11Speaker 4: I see two guys who are relaxed, smiling, working together
- 21:15Speaker 4: and look pretty comfortable.
- 21:16Speaker 1: You know.
- 21:17Speaker 9: Yeah, a little bit of the world we live in
- 21:19Speaker 9: stud You know, you can say, you say whatever you want.
- 21:21Speaker 5: You can tweet whatever you want.
- 21:22Speaker 9: There's no repercussions, just like you know, hey, we're Cavon
- 21:26Speaker 9: Thibodau is getting traded on Friday or Saturday whenever that
- 21:29Speaker 9: came out last and nobody's talking about that anymore.
- 21:31Speaker 5: It's not true.
- 21:31Speaker 9: You know, we shot it down. So again, what matters
- 21:34Speaker 9: is what goes on in this building. And I know
- 21:36Speaker 9: the relationship the coach, Harball and I have, and I
- 21:38Speaker 9: know the coaching staff, you know, the scouting staff, everybody
- 21:41Speaker 9: in this building. You know a lot of talented individuals,
- 21:44Speaker 9: and that's really all it matters to me. You know,
- 21:46Speaker 9: I don't get caught up and the outside noise of
- 21:48Speaker 9: the rumors.
- 21:49Speaker 5: You know, I know two.
- 21:50Speaker 9: Guys have been working really hard to do what's best
- 21:52Speaker 9: for this franchise, and you know, I like the trajectory
- 21:54Speaker 9: want I like the off season we had, and you
- 21:57Speaker 9: know we're going to look forward to continuing to do that.
- 22:00Speaker 4: How do you keep it away from uh, from your family?
- 22:02Speaker 4: Like that's difficult, that's tricky, Like does the wife? Do
- 22:05Speaker 4: people get concerned within your family, like Joe, what the
- 22:07Speaker 4: hell's going on here?
- 22:08Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 22:09Speaker 9: I mean it's everywhere, so it's only natural, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 9: I kind of look at it.
- 22:12Speaker 5: You know, you got a kid in college.
- 22:15Speaker 9: You know, you got one that's a quarterback here locally,
- 22:17Speaker 9: that's you know, a sophomore that you know they got
- 22:19Speaker 9: to Back in the day when I was being recruited,
- 22:21Speaker 9: they would send you letters and I would have to
- 22:23Speaker 9: send DHS tapes. You now, you've got to be on
- 22:26Speaker 9: social media to That's how these coaches interact with them.
- 22:29Speaker 5: So they see it.
- 22:30Speaker 9: But you know, again they're you know, I have good
- 22:32Speaker 9: conversations with them, and it really doesn't matter, you know
- 22:36Speaker 9: what the outside noise is. And you know, again keep them,
- 22:39Speaker 9: uh protected as much as I can. So again, what
- 22:41Speaker 9: really matters is.
- 22:42Speaker 5: What's going on. You know in these four walls.
- 22:44Speaker 9: You know, within nineteen twenty five giants drive and you
- 22:47Speaker 9: know there's a lot of good people in this building
- 22:48Speaker 9: that are working hard, and you know we're gonna get
- 22:49Speaker 9: this thing going.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Has the son's game, I mean, how is he good?
- 22:53Speaker 1: It's got an arm.
- 22:54Speaker 9: Yeah, he started as a sophomore, has some has some
- 22:57Speaker 9: offers already on the table, so uh, it's a lot
- 23:00Speaker 9: of fun. He still got two more years left and
- 23:02Speaker 9: he's really into it. So they lost a tough one
- 23:05Speaker 9: in the state championship game.
- 23:06Speaker 5: And yeah, eleven and one, but uh yeah, he's a
- 23:09Speaker 5: good player.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Eleven one, Go ahead, Mikey. Jeez, yes, Jets need a quarterback.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Go ahead, Mikey. They always do. Go ahead. But you
- 23:18Speaker 1: threw me off with that, Joe.
- 23:22Speaker 10: There's a there's a there's a an idea growing, at
- 23:26Speaker 10: least in media circles about getting rid of the seventh
- 23:29Speaker 10: round of the draft because nil is forcing, not forcing,
- 23:32Speaker 10: but it's leading a lot of players to go back
- 23:35Speaker 10: to school, so not as many of the talented players
- 23:37Speaker 10: are coming out.
- 23:37Speaker 5: I'm curious where you would stand on something like that.
- 23:41Speaker 9: Yeah, that's an interesting question and something we're looking at.
- 23:44Speaker 9: So we typically have like one hundred and forty guys
- 23:48Speaker 9: on our board, and throughout my career that's always been enough.
- 23:52Speaker 9: You may end up with eight or nine guys on
- 23:54Speaker 9: the board at the end of it. This year, we
- 23:55Speaker 9: had one hundred and eighty guys on our board, and
- 23:57Speaker 9: I'm like, I'm stressing out. I'm like, this is way
- 23:59Speaker 9: too many guys on the board. But the reality was
- 24:03Speaker 9: the extra numbers were in the fifth, sixth, and seventh,
- 24:06Speaker 9: So to me, it's a lot of those guys that
- 24:08Speaker 9: go back for the nil because they're going to make
- 24:11Speaker 9: more money at college. They're not going to be top
- 24:13Speaker 9: draft picks, but they are who they are. So there's like,
- 24:16Speaker 9: to me, where there's a surplus of fifth, sixth, seventh
- 24:19Speaker 9: round guys more so than maybe the top top guys
- 24:22Speaker 9: in this draft, and maybe it's going to be that
- 24:24Speaker 9: way going forward. I'm not positive, but those are you know,
- 24:27Speaker 9: there's still some good players in the fifth, sixth, seventh round.
- 24:29Speaker 9: So we we did have a surplus, and we still
- 24:32Speaker 9: ended up with only eight guys left on our board
- 24:35Speaker 9: at the end of it.
- 24:36Speaker 5: So despite having you know, significant amount of.
- 24:39Speaker 9: Players, you know, more more numbers than what we typically have,
- 24:42Speaker 9: we still ended up with, you know, getting only eight
- 24:44Speaker 9: or nine players on the board. So you know, there's
- 24:47Speaker 9: not I could think of one player, you know, maybe
- 24:50Speaker 9: the I'm not going to say it, but like one
- 24:52Speaker 9: player or two players that went back last year that
- 24:54Speaker 9: I was really surprised that would have been maybe top
- 24:57Speaker 9: fifteen picks, and you gotta wonder what they got paid
- 24:59Speaker 9: to do that. But otherwise, you know, I think a
- 25:02Speaker 9: lot of these players that go back maybe you know,
- 25:05Speaker 9: day Day three players anyways, and it's guaranteed money from
- 25:08Speaker 9: the schools.
- 25:09Speaker 4: Joe, I love the roster, I said. Now listen, I'm
- 25:12Speaker 4: prisoner of the moment I said. I said, right after
- 25:14Speaker 4: the draft, I think you guys are going to win
- 25:16Speaker 4: the NFC East. Do you feel like your roster is
- 25:18Speaker 4: good enough to win the NFC East.
- 25:21Speaker 5: I'm not getting get into predictions.
- 25:22Speaker 1: I'm just saying I just want Howie Roseman to get
- 25:25Speaker 1: pissed off.
- 25:25Speaker 5: I mean, we gotta go do it again.
- 25:29Speaker 9: Like you know, on paper and the a pluses and
- 25:32Speaker 9: the draft grades, you know that just you know that
- 25:35Speaker 9: doesn't mean much.
- 25:35Speaker 5: We gotta we gotta go go out and do it.
- 25:37Speaker 9: And like I said, I've got a lot of confidence
- 25:39Speaker 9: the players are in this building and the coaching staff
- 25:41Speaker 9: and coach Arball has a tremendous plan in place, and
- 25:44Speaker 9: you know, look forward to getting camp and seeing how
- 25:46Speaker 9: it all comes together.
- 25:47Speaker 4: We'll get you out of here in just a second.
- 25:48Speaker 4: Go ahead, Taylor, Joe, I would.
- 25:50Speaker 6: Be a terrible GM because if I was picking a ten,
- 25:53Speaker 6: part of my thinking would be, hey, we have to
- 25:56Speaker 6: pick Caleb downs here because if we don't pick him,
- 25:59Speaker 6: he's gonna go to Dow And then we're gonna have
- 26:00Speaker 6: to play him twice a year. How do you kind
- 26:02Speaker 6: of go into a draft avoiding thinking like that? With
- 26:05Speaker 6: Sonny Styles going in division.
- 26:08Speaker 4: He would take players because he doesn't want to play.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Then later on, that's amazing, you would be terrible.
- 26:14Speaker 5: There's somebody that can block those guys. I guess we
- 26:20Speaker 5: said our board.
- 26:21Speaker 9: You know that Caleb Downs are a really good player,
- 26:22Speaker 9: Sonny Styles, those are all guys we spent a lot
- 26:24Speaker 9: of time with and they're good players. And you know,
- 26:26Speaker 9: it's situational based on your roster and how at the
- 26:28Speaker 9: end of the day, you know how you stack your board.
- 26:31Speaker 9: And again, we're more worried about the players that we
- 26:33Speaker 9: did take than you know, the ones that we don't
- 26:35Speaker 9: make sure we get the ones right that we did take.
- 26:37Speaker 9: So we're we're happy with those two guys we got
- 26:39Speaker 9: in the top ten.
- 26:40Speaker 5: Coach, do you have Joe b Ningo's number?
- 26:46Speaker 1: Now?
- 26:46Speaker 4: Mikey and I were laughing job that the Jet fans
- 26:50Speaker 4: would give anything to have a general manager like you.
- 26:53Speaker 4: You're part of the group that traded up to get
- 26:55Speaker 4: Josh Allen in Buffalo and then you came to New
- 26:58Speaker 4: York and again you put together this roster with Jackson Dart.
- 27:01Speaker 1: The league, neighbors and.
- 27:03Speaker 4: Giant fans are still pissed off, and mikey A and
- 27:05Speaker 4: I were laughing saying, do you know what we would
- 27:07Speaker 4: give to have a GM like Joe Jane and so
- 27:10Speaker 4: then he said, listen, we can connect you with the
- 27:12Speaker 4: right people.
- 27:12Speaker 1: And mikey A went on to say, yet.
- 27:14Speaker 4: But do you know Joe Beningo as if he's the
- 27:17Speaker 4: guy who could broke her deal in the event that
- 27:19Speaker 4: the Giants, Like, if.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Anyone had to do, yes, it's Beno.
- 27:23Speaker 9: Yes, is gonna do a good job, Oiver.
- 27:28Speaker 5: He had a good draft. He just had a good draft.
- 27:29Speaker 1: Like there, I'm more concerned about you.
- 27:32Speaker 4: I don't like the criticism you're getting. It's unfair to me.
- 27:34Speaker 4: I'm sorry, I'm gonna say it. It's unfair. I care
- 27:37Speaker 4: about my friend Joe. He's not saying anything. He doesn't
- 27:39Speaker 4: give a fuck about your criticism. I care about it
- 27:41Speaker 4: because he put together a roster that got him one
- 27:44Speaker 4: of the greatest coaches in the history of the game.
- 27:46Speaker 1: Give him a break.
- 27:48Speaker 5: I appreciate your support for sure, but comes with the territory.
- 27:52Speaker 5: That's what I signed up with. And Uh, I'm gonna
- 27:55Speaker 5: control what I can control.
- 27:56Speaker 4: Yes, in that market, Giants, general manager, you know how
- 27:59Speaker 4: much the fans care, and so you know in part
- 28:01Speaker 4: it comes from a good place.
- 28:03Speaker 1: From the fans. They just want the team to be
- 28:04Speaker 1: good and competitive. That's it me too.
- 28:07Speaker 5: We're aligned in that train of thought.
- 28:09Speaker 1: Yes, but you are.
- 28:10Speaker 4: And as someone who's a fan of a team who's
- 28:12Speaker 4: never competitive and never good, I'm just telling you, hey,
- 28:15Speaker 4: Giant fans, we'll take Joe Shane right now. Okay, we'll
- 28:18Speaker 4: get him in touch with Beningo. Beningo, We'll get him
- 28:20Speaker 4: in touch with the Jets, and we'll go from there.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I promised that would.
- 28:27Speaker 1: Make it uncomfortable. All right, we appreciate it.
- 28:32Speaker 4: I'm happy to hear your relationship with John is getting
- 28:35Speaker 4: stronger by the day, and I hope it continues to grow.
