- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Take
- 0:16presented by Sea Kick. This episode 493.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corden. I'm here with my Co host Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:26How? How did you, How did you fit
- 0:28into your office today? How did you squeeze in through
- 0:32the door? Because I had to go remove the
- 0:35hinges off the door for that extra couple inches.
- 0:41Suck it in a little bit. Yeah.
- 0:44Slide. Yeah, it was.
- 0:47Today was just rough, man. And shout out to all the folks
- 0:50out there who can, who can empathize, sympathize, whatever
- 0:54the word is with us. You know, You know what today
- 0:57was like today? Today was a grind.
- 1:01Today sucked. Well, I mean, I hope it didn't
- 1:04suck for you if you're listening or watching, but just they
- 1:09should have made this a holiday too.
- 1:10Like just give us like that bonus day after the Thanksgiving
- 1:15break. Like let us let's collect
- 1:17ourselves. How many did you get?
- 1:19A lot of automated emails, like saying they're out of the office
- 1:23today. I had a decent amount of those
- 1:26today and I'm like, you know, shame, shame on my company for
- 1:32not doing that. Well, driving into work, the
- 1:35traffic was little to none. So I'm like these people in this
- 1:39area, for some reason, I guess have just decided to extend
- 1:42their Thanksgiving. They've taken upon themselves to
- 1:44extend their break because there was nobody out today.
- 1:47So don't know what that was all about.
- 1:50Genius. There's a few there that maybe
- 1:53we get a petition going on. A few different things.
- 1:56I do think there there was like this perfect plan that came out.
- 2:02I know this is a baseball podcast, crazy that I'm talking
- 2:05about football, but there's a petition that came out that was
- 2:08like if they had like an extra week or like remove one pre
- 2:17season week out of the schedule. It lines up perfectly for it to
- 2:24be like the Super Bowl to be the second week in February, which
- 2:27lines up with a Monday being a holiday and then bang, you got
- 2:32your Monday off following a Super Bowl.
- 2:35I think that it that should be like a standard that Monday
- 2:38after Thanksgiving. I think day after Christmas
- 2:43should for sure be a holiday. Give me Christmas Eve, Christmas
- 2:49and a day to enjoy my gifts, you know.
- 2:52Exactly. What if I have some awesome toys
- 2:54to play with? You know, think about the kids.
- 2:57Go get the batteries for the toys Christmas Day.
- 3:01I'd go get them the day after. Think about the kids.
- 3:04This isn't about us. It's not about us. 30 something.
- 3:07Think about the kids. I don't get toys anymore.
- 3:11Unbelievable. We actually, we actually have
- 3:13officially gone. No, no gifts.
- 3:16We've sent that announcement out to the fam.
- 3:20No gifts. Anybody.
- 3:22Don't get us anything. We're not getting you anything.
- 3:26Yeah, Wow, it's nice. I think we're going to.
- 3:30I think we're going to adopt A family, get them some gifts.
- 3:33Look at you. And and just, you know, make
- 3:37that day what it's what it should be.
- 3:39You know, you're absolutely right.
- 3:40So I guess I'm off the hook then.
- 3:42I'm not sending anything. Don't send me anything, guy.
- 3:44I'm not sending you anything. Don't send me anything.
- 3:48That was from the. Podcast account, that's a whole
- 3:50different. That's a whole different story.
- 3:51Yeah. I mean, that's just, I mean that
- 3:53the podcast is paying for it at that point.
- 3:55Yeah, no. Podcast bonus.
- 3:56I was definitely planning to send you something but may have
- 3:59to talk. About this, my bad, I forgot I
- 4:01forgot to include you into that announcement.
- 4:03Yeah, all good, All good. Speaking of gifts, the Dodgers
- 4:06just keep on adding to their haul.
- 4:14They're keeping Tom, Tommy Edmond around.
- 4:16And I know if you're listening to this, we go, oh, this
- 4:18happened days ago. We know we haven't recorded
- 4:21since then, so. Crazy.
- 4:22There's something going on. Yeah, I was.
- 4:24Just like giving thanks. This big holiday, be thankful
- 4:27we're even talking about it at this point.
- 4:30Keeping Kim Tommy Edmond around on A5 year $74 million contract
- 4:36extension that'll keep him around through 2029 Do we like
- 4:42this deal? I'm a big Tommy Edmond guy.
- 4:44We I've. We've been on the Tommy Edmond
- 4:46train for a while. We've been on the Tommy Edmond
- 4:48train a while. Yeah.
- 4:50And it, it you could say that it, it caught a little bit more
- 4:54steam with his, his performance in the postseason.
- 5:00But the let the record show. Let it show.
- 5:04That we were. We were Tommy Edmond guys before
- 5:06it was cool. Like this move for Tommy.
- 5:10Like this move for the Dodgers? He's a no brainer.
- 5:13He's a no brainer, I think. I think it's a very solid
- 5:23realization of what Tommy Edmond is.
- 5:27I don't think we can go overboard and just sit here and
- 5:30say he deserves a ton of money based on what he did this post
- 5:33season, although he played great.
- 5:36Let's let's reel it in and take some of that recency bias out of
- 5:40it and understand, you know, what had a little bit of an
- 5:44injury passed can kind of blend in to fill in a gap, but not
- 5:52necessarily a necessary piece for this roster.
- 5:57So this is this is good. Tommy Edmund, if you're Tommy,
- 6:00you're like, you know what? I'll take five years of
- 6:02guarantee. That sounds fantastic.
- 6:05With a six year club option. So there's a lot going on here
- 6:08that I like. The Dodgers seem to just be
- 6:13redefining how contracts are being done.
- 6:17And if you're a hater, anybody can do this.
- 6:21Every team can do this. It's an option.
- 6:25I don't think teams know this. I don't think they do I.
- 6:28Don't know how many more moves it's going to take on behalf of
- 6:31the Los Angeles Dodgers for the rest of Major League Baseball to
- 6:34realize, oh, like this is legal. The Dodgers aren't committing a
- 6:38crime in broad daylight by deferring these contracts.
- 6:42Like, we can do this, too. I don't know why why these teams
- 6:45have have yet to realize that. Yep, Yep.
- 6:49So I it's almost like the pairing of a signing bonus with
- 6:54a deferment really makes a player pretty happy, you know
- 6:59what I mean? Like it keeps them happy.
- 7:02It does. It's a win win.
- 7:04It keeps the roster, it keeps the salary like at at a
- 7:08reasonable number for the most part.
- 7:11The deferment, hey, we're not going to get you that money
- 7:14right now because what is it, 25,000,000 deferred over 10
- 7:20years? About a third, yeah, Give or
- 7:23take 25, you got this $17 million signing bonus.
- 7:27About 1/3. I don't remember what the actual
- 7:29number was, but. Give or take 25, I'm on spot
- 7:33track. It's saying 25,000,000 is
- 7:35deferred at two and a half million over 10 years, five
- 7:39years after the contract ends, which is presumably retirement
- 7:44age for Tommy. And you get that 17,000,000, you
- 7:50know, as as the bone. It's this is just it's a win
- 7:54win. It's a win win for a player who
- 7:58I think fits in perfectly. A little bit of a safety net for
- 8:05Mookie. If the whole shortstop thing.
- 8:09Are we going to try that again? We are going to try it again.
- 8:13We're telling free agents we're trying it again because we don't
- 8:17need you that much. I don't know, but it is a little
- 8:20bit of a safety net and. Is it is it like heresy to say
- 8:26that this is like a, a new and improved Chris Taylor?
- 8:32Oh, yeah. Like, I mean, they, they love
- 8:35their Chris Taylor types. And this is further evidence
- 8:39that that's the case. And that's that's the case
- 8:42moving. Forward.
- 8:43This is a move dude. Like I.
- 8:46This is what I think every team needs.
- 8:49Every team needs a Tommy Edmond. But there aren't that many Tommy
- 8:52Edmonds. Around, that's the key, that's
- 8:54the key. And and boys and girls, it still
- 8:56pays to play really good defense, hit the ball line to
- 9:02line, good ABS, good base running.
- 9:07And just be a gamer, like just. Be a gamer.
- 9:09That's it. You don't got to be.
- 9:11Look, I'd love for everybody to be a superstar, but if
- 9:14everybody's a superstar, nobody's a superstar.
- 9:17There's only so many Mookie Betts, there's only so many
- 9:21Freddie Freeman's, there's only so many Shohei Otani's.
- 9:24There's only one show, Hitani. There's only so many of the guys
- 9:28that are the headliners. Somebody's got to get this job.
- 9:32Somebody's got to be utility man.
- 9:34Somebody's got to hit 7th. Somebody's got to be, you know,
- 9:38getting knocked in scoring from first, right?
- 9:41Why not you? Somebody's got to get some of
- 9:44these lower level contracts. Why not you?
- 9:48It pays. I mean lower level it is.
- 9:52I'll gladly take a lower level contract.
- 9:55It's 74 million with a sure will $17.00 million or $17 million
- 9:59signing bonus. I'll gladly take that.
- 10:01Sure will, Sure will. And you know, the thing about
- 10:05Tommy, though, is he is one of the few in baseball that can
- 10:11actually fill out the title, the moniker, the role of super
- 10:16utility man that gets thrown up for some reason.
- 10:19I don't know what it is with reporters and journalists, you
- 10:24know, habit of of just tossing that around like it's nothing.
- 10:27Like not everybody. Just because you can play
- 10:30multiple positions doesn't make you a super utility man.
- 10:32You have to be able to play them and play them somewhat similarly
- 10:38in terms of the the output, in terms, in terms of the
- 10:41excellence that you're going to provide at that position.
- 10:43And Tommy Edmond can bounce around and give you that type of
- 10:47output just about probably anywhere you'd ask him to play.
- 10:51Well, how do you define super utility?
- 10:53What's that about for you? Well, I mean, you have to play
- 10:59for me, you got to play infield outfield, but you also have to
- 11:02be able to play multiple within each.
- 11:04You don't have to, I mean, you don't have to play literally
- 11:07like you don't have to play first, second, third, short,
- 11:10left, center right in order to be a, a super utility man.
- 11:14But in, in, in a case like Tommy Edmund or, or fill in the blank
- 11:18of whoever else we think fits that role.
- 11:21You got to be able to play a couple, maybe a couple middle
- 11:24infield spots and maybe a couple outfield spots and, and do it
- 11:28fairly well. Otherwise you're just a utility
- 11:30guy. I agree.
- 11:32I think that's the key. I'm not saying you had to go out
- 11:35there and win the utility Gold Glove, but I I would categorize
- 11:42super utility as as you're playing, no offense the other
- 11:48positions, but if you're playing shortstop percenter plus, you
- 11:55know, if you had other things going on that checks that box
- 12:00for me, I will call you super utility.
- 12:02You know, I don't, I don't think you see a ton of I I would throw
- 12:07catcher into that. If that ever becomes a thing,
- 12:10it's not really a thing. You're either a catcher, catcher
- 12:13or backup catcher or occasionally slotting at first
- 12:16base. I think if that ever was a day
- 12:20where you're like, I'm, I'm lacing it up behind the dish and
- 12:24then the next day I'm in center, then you want to throw it back
- 12:27to middle school Nate days. Then you can call yourself super
- 12:31utility for sure. But realistically, yeah, I think
- 12:35if shortstop or center field are in one of your positions that
- 12:40you're playing, I won't even say weekly, I'll say bi weekly.
- 12:47Chalk it up for super utility. Otherwise you're just utility.
- 12:51No offense. Somebody's got to have that role
- 12:55too. Somebody's got to play first and
- 12:573rd, sneak in at left field, whatever it is.
- 13:01But yeah, super utility, that's kind of like, you know, where we
- 13:04have that definition of ace versus #1 starter.
- 13:07It's only so many aces in the planet.
- 13:10Plenty of #1 starters. Somebody's got to be a number
- 13:12one. There's utility and then there's
- 13:15super utility. Tommy Edmund, healthy super
- 13:20utility. Speaking of aces, Frankie Montes
- 13:25is not one of those. But.
- 13:28Very good. He was signed by the New York
- 13:31Mets in a move that I don't want to say shocked a lot of people.
- 13:36But I would venture to say in the midst of the Juan Soto
- 13:42sweepstakes that we find ourselves in the middle of, I
- 13:46would venture to say that the text alerts, the text
- 13:50notifications that were coming through.
- 13:53What was it just the other day with Mets and sign?
- 13:58Yeah, I think the name that most people thought was about the OR
- 14:03Mets fans at least were hoping that followed were would be Juan
- 14:08Soto. Mets signed Juan Soto.
- 14:10The Mets did not sign Juan Soto. They signed Frankie Montas.
- 14:14And you know, would I have gone after maybe Shawn Manaya over
- 14:26Frankie Montas? Maybe.
- 14:30Maybe. What was the deal for?
- 14:34Two years, 34 million. Don't quote me on this, but I
- 14:42want to say, I want to say trade rumors had impegged at like 222.
- 14:53Yeah, 2/22 and he goes out and and snags a $34 million contract
- 15:01over two years. I don't get it.
- 15:04Look, I'm not I'm not here to be a hater.
- 15:08Get your money. If you can get signed, get
- 15:10signed. I'm trying to find where I'm
- 15:14seeing 17 a year. I mean, 150 innings last year,
- 15:22OK, 484 ERA, OK, A471 FIP and 89 ERA plus.
- 15:40This is what $17 million a year is Now I got there's a lot of
- 15:47names I'm looking at this list. There's a lot of names I would
- 15:52take over this. There's a lot of names that I'd
- 15:56be like, here's an extra year. I was literally just about to
- 16:00say, like, heck, take the extra year.
- 16:03Yeah, I. I'm with you.
- 16:04You know, I, I just, I can't connect these dots.
- 16:10I'm sorry. It's 32.
- 16:15I mean, there are a few guys that I think mass equals gas,
- 16:22but it seems like he just gets heavier every year.
- 16:27I don't know man. Well, because David Stearns was
- 16:32in Milwaukee, right? Or how, how long has he been
- 16:41with, with the Mets? Because I thought I saw that
- 16:45there was a connection there between Montas and Stearns and
- 16:47how this is like his his reclamation project, if you
- 16:53will. But I may have misread that
- 16:54somewhere. Why am I forgetting where David
- 16:57Stearns came from? Like you're telling me you're
- 17:05not willing with the upside? You're not willing to take a
- 17:07risk on a Shane Bieber? Brewers in 2023. 17 a year, you
- 17:13know? Yeah, yeah.
- 17:16Like if you're the Mets, Frankie Montas is up for grabs.
- 17:22If you don't sign him, he's up for grabs at the deadline more
- 17:26likely than not, and you're not committing that much money.
- 17:31I this is weird. This is weird.
- 17:36I don't like this. There's a lot of names.
- 17:38I would take over a lot of names.
- 17:43What is are there any of these free agent names that are
- 17:46projected in the similar 2-3 year deal hovering around 15 to
- 17:5320 million? I bet there's a lot.
- 17:58I bet there's quite a few guys in that in that club.
- 18:06I mean, I, I, I just don't see it.
- 18:14I would have definitely brought back Manaya.
- 18:18He's he's pegged at 360. Yeah.
- 18:21Like if that's an extra year, you know what I'm saying?
- 18:24Like, fine. Like, I feel like he kind of
- 18:26earned that for you. Cocooch is off the books.
- 18:34Severino's pegged at 3:51. Evaldi's 244.
- 18:42I would have done that all day. All day.
- 18:47And. That would have been the move.
- 18:49For sure. 244 for Ivaldi instead of 234.
- 18:53Yeah, we keep hearing about about this pocketbook in New
- 18:58York or in Queens. Show it, Spend the extra 10 and
- 19:02go get Nate Ivaldi. Yeah, please.
- 19:06Please. Well, don't, because we need him
- 19:09in Boston, but you get my point. Yeah, I just, this is kind of a
- 19:12head scratcher for me. And I'm again, like if you're,
- 19:16if you're a Frankie Montas fan, you know, I apologize.
- 19:20I'm not, I'm not trying to be mean.
- 19:22I'm not trying to come down on the guy.
- 19:23I don't he, he doesn't really come across the radar very often
- 19:28for me. I just, I'm, I'm struggling to
- 19:33see like where did the 9 to $12 million AAV contracts just not
- 19:41exist anymore? Because that this to me is like
- 19:45that all day. 2 years 18 would have been like OK right, no big
- 19:51deal. And to your point about, you
- 19:53know, sort of the market it it, it sort of begs the question
- 19:57like, OK, so then what does this mean for guys like Flaherty,
- 20:00Freed, Burns, Ivaldi, guys like that?
- 20:04I mean it's. Got to go up.
- 20:06It's got to be in the 20s now like a solid.
- 20:10I don't, I don't understand after we saw what happened last
- 20:16year and maybe even the year before that in terms of the
- 20:21market and the and and how it was handled in the offseason.
- 20:25I I wouldn't have expected there to be these overpays that we're
- 20:30seeing already, especially with just these middle tier arms that
- 20:35are nothing more than a middle to back end option for you.
- 20:40Yeah. I just, I mean, good for the
- 20:43players, like, you know, it's going to drive the market up for
- 20:46those guys, but it just seems a little inflated.
- 20:51I, I, I honestly don't know. I just don't know Matthew Boyd,
- 20:56another guy sort of in that same vein.
- 20:59I'm not going to, I'm not going to speak I'll of of Matthew Boyd
- 21:03because he he certainly showed out when he came back from
- 21:06injury last year. But.
- 21:08Yeah. A2 year, $29 million contract
- 21:16for the Chicago Cubs. Two year, 29, two years. 29 to.
- 21:24Me like again, this is still inflated and nothing against
- 21:28Matthew Boyd, but like you're telling me, you're telling me
- 21:33you had to get them now, you had to get them at that price.
- 21:39You're telling me that's a name that isn't available in a month
- 21:44for eight to 10 million less? I mean, that's just the nature
- 21:50of the like the the nature of the beast, right?
- 21:52Like if you wait, if we wait and wait and wait on guys like I
- 21:57mentioned Burns Freed and the light and pre.
- 21:59I mean, previously Snell, but Snell's now off the board.
- 22:02But, and, and we've talked about it.
- 22:05We talked about it shortly after the offseason started.
- 22:08Once these names start dropping, you're going to have these teams
- 22:12are going to have to pivot and especially A-Team.
- 22:15Well, the Mets would have been an example.
- 22:19But these teams, if, if they miss out on the guys that
- 22:23they're after, they're going to pivot and they're going to bully
- 22:27their way through that process because they have the money and
- 22:31they can spend. But because of that, like, am I
- 22:37crazy for thinking that the price would go up?
- 22:41Because they're, I mean, that's just supply and demand, right?
- 22:45Like a guy like Matthew Boyd. Boyd, if you waited for for free
- 22:52to fall, for Burns to fall and then you're looking around,
- 22:56you're going Matthew, Matthew Boyd's really our our only
- 22:59option here like that then. And like I said, it's going to
- 23:02be a bidding war over Matthew Boyd, But that's sort of what
- 23:05would happen. So you may in that situation,
- 23:08you may be looking at like a 32 year 33.
- 23:11I mean it it wouldn't be astronomical, but you would have
- 23:15to assume there'd be some sort of a bump, right?
- 23:18I don't know I I think I look at this class as like 3 different
- 23:22categories. I think you have your your, your
- 23:25guys in your prime that are, you know, 29 to 32 that are about to
- 23:32maximize their payday. And I think we can we all that
- 23:36list the top of our head. Then there's like this aging
- 23:45close to end of the road veteran who has a super proven track
- 23:50record and then everyone else seems to be like 33 and up and
- 23:59kind of a question mark, whether it's injury or has hit rough
- 24:03patches the last few years. You know, statistically, like I
- 24:08and and Matthew Boyd, look, he did look good last year when the
- 24:10games that he played and I can see that there's maybe some
- 24:15upside there. But injury wise, like what do
- 24:19you got? You got something good.
- 24:22I don't want to talk about Matthew Boyd that much longer.
- 24:26We have a massive signing update.
- 24:30Breaking news Kyle Higashioka has signed A2 year deal with the
- 24:37Texas Rangers for a with a mutual option 2027.
- 24:44Hey, look, man, these these teams are going out and getting
- 24:47who they want. The the Kyle Higashioka must
- 24:52have been a target for the Rangers for some time.
- 24:54And they said, you know what? Why wait?
- 24:56Why wait another day? We're going to go get our.
- 24:58Guy, we can't. We just can't.
- 25:01We got to go get him now. Wow.
- 25:07Huge, huge day for the Texas Rangers now.
- 25:11Nothing but love for Higashi. OK, seems like a good guy.
- 25:15Seems like a good cat, that is. I know, I know.
- 25:21Sneaky, funny and dry. He's just, he's just kind of a
- 25:24boring dude on the on the outside, but apparently he's
- 25:29like the funniest guy in the clubhouse.
- 25:33I don't see it, but I'll take. I don't.
- 25:35See it either Yeah, take. Your word for it?
- 25:37I don't see you either. Tell, tell you what, man,
- 25:39there's something in the in in the backup role.
- 25:42You know, I was just going to look up Jonah Heim versus
- 25:48lefties numbers because I wonder if they're just trying to
- 25:53transition him away from that. You know, if they're like, you
- 26:03know what, let's just let him stick to the left, stick to the
- 26:09righties. Not that bad. 679 OPS against
- 26:18lefties, better off a lefties. I'm confused.
- 26:20We got confused. We got.
- 26:23To get better this, this, this has to like I was, I was really
- 26:30trying to hold out some optimism for this for this offseason.
- 26:36And like, I'm not, I'm not throwing in the towel yet, but
- 26:39like, all right. We need something we're.
- 26:42Past Thanksgiving now, like we got to, we got to step it up.
- 26:47Is it, is it what? What was the the straw on the
- 26:50camel's back for you? Me looking up Jonah Heim's
- 26:52numbers against lefties? Was that where you were like,
- 26:55you know? It wasn't a high of this spot
- 26:57here. We cannot be here.
- 26:59This is rock bottom. We can't be talking about
- 27:02Matthew Boyd maybe earning a few more $1,000,000 if he were to
- 27:08wait at wait it out. Like this is this is where we're
- 27:12at. We can't be doing this.
- 27:14And it's not a, it's not a NAR. It's not like indicative of, of
- 27:19what we're doing. It's just what we're dealt, like
- 27:21what we've been dealt as baseball fans.
- 27:23And like, I, I know we got the Snell and, and, and the like,
- 27:27but it's the Dodgers. Like give me something else.
- 27:32Like we're due for a team, not name the Dodgers to go out and
- 27:36make a splash. We're due for it.
- 27:41I don't know, man. I don't know.
- 27:44I'm trying. I'm trying.
- 27:45I'm trying to give you just tantalizing coverage and content
- 27:52of of what's happening. I mean, I bet.
- 27:55You current events, this is just.
- 27:58I bet you the people that say that are listening and or
- 28:01watching. We're not expecting Jonah Heim
- 28:05numbers tonight, but you know what?
- 28:07Who else is bringing those to you at this very?
- 28:09Moment. Who else is?
- 28:11Bringing you Jonah Heim numbers right now.
- 28:13We are shout out to the state of the hot stove right now.
- 28:17It sucks, but you know what? We're going to make the most of
- 28:20it. What kind of money did he get,
- 28:24Iggy? Dude, you don't even want to
- 28:28know. No, I actually don't.
- 28:32Know just two years. I mean it.
- 28:34You heard that. You heard the alarm.
- 28:36You heard the alarm. I know it was either going to be
- 28:39huge or it was going to be like that and.
- 28:43You heard the alarm. It's quite literally breaking
- 28:45news. Don't have the details on the
- 28:47contract yet. Yeah, he loves the fact that he
- 28:53can control his own soundboard. Working.
- 28:55Love it. OK, but what doesn't make sense
- 28:57is the Rangers have already made it official.
- 29:01So if you have the team putting this announcement out there, how
- 29:03do we not know the details? Of it, the money out there.
- 29:10Come on now, you know what? Something to work with.
- 29:14Frankly, I don't even care enough to to really dive into
- 29:18this any further. So you know what?
- 29:19We're going to talk about Brandon Crawford couple days out
- 29:24here from the news, but Brandon Crawford has announced his
- 29:26retirement after 14 seasons in the big leagues.
- 29:33Look, Brandon Crawford. Thank you for your service.
- 29:36Thank you for your service. I'm not going to say I'm a huge
- 29:38like Brandon Crawford guy. I did.
- 29:40I like Brandon Crawford. Yeah, played the game hard.
- 29:44But the thing with me, and this is, it's sort of a, it's sort of
- 29:52a tricky path to navigate because like you, you never want
- 29:54to knock a guy for trying to get every last Oz out of his career
- 30:00and his ability like I'm, I'm never going to knock a guy for
- 30:03doing that. Although I will say there are
- 30:05some guys in that we've seen probably in the last half decade
- 30:08that have maybe stretched that a little too much.
- 30:12And we're just like, OK, I, I think, I think you've left no
- 30:16choice but to leave it in the hands of, of baseball fans to
- 30:18make this decision for you. And we're collectively saying
- 30:21it's time to retire. Not the case for Brandon
- 30:23Crawford necessarily. I mean it, it didn't end well,
- 30:26but the. It kind of was.
- 30:28We were like we were get really getting there, really getting
- 30:31there. Well, let me clarify that he, he
- 30:40had reached that point. I'm talking about the guys that
- 30:43reached that point and then decide like, no, we're going to
- 30:46milk this out another 2-3 years. That's when that's when enough
- 30:50is, has been enough. But the thing with Brandon
- 30:52Crawford and, and we've, we've maybe shared this thought or
- 30:59this point with, with other guys over the years.
- 31:03But the, the thing with Brandon Crawford is that I, I just
- 31:06really wish, really wish that the whole Saint Louis Cardinals
- 31:12thing that that experiment didn't happen.
- 31:14You, you just if he, if he sticks in Saint Louis for, I
- 31:20don't know, call it three years, OK.
- 31:22It's like, you know, he had like a little last hurrah with
- 31:26another squad, gave it a go, stuck around for a few years,
- 31:30helped bring up the younger guys and and sort of serve as a
- 31:32mentor for them, which he I'm sure he still did in the in the
- 31:36short time that he was there. But like, you're there for a
- 31:40year. Yeah.
- 31:42And that whole like forever giant thing sort of goes.
- 31:45I mean, I'm, I'm sure they're still going to call him a
- 31:49forever giant, but like, technically speaking, can't
- 31:52really call him that if he's, you know, a Saint Louis
- 31:55Cardinal. But yeah, I mean, not to say I'd
- 31:59take away from his career, but that that's just sort of the one
- 32:03thing that any time I hear Brandon Crawford's name now,
- 32:06that's the first thing come to mind.
- 32:07It's like he's not a this isn't a giant for life kind of guy.
- 32:11It makes you wonder if there's like there's part of these
- 32:14conversations that that maybe go beyond the retirement Phase I
- 32:26because you look at like when they did the signing, I was like
- 32:31in my head, I was like, OK, like maybe a little bit of like some
- 32:34mentorship to, you know, Mason win, You know, like, let me let
- 32:38me show you the ropes a little bit on, you know, some things
- 32:41that made me so successful. You did say, I do remember that.
- 32:44And I and I can see where that has its value.
- 32:51Maybe there's some kind of conversation that's like, hey,
- 32:55we're going to bring you here for a year.
- 32:59You may be DFA D, you may be getting, you know, once a week
- 33:05play time if you're lucky. But I'll put in a good word for
- 33:11you. If you want to get into coaching
- 33:13when you're done or if you want to like if if you want a
- 33:15position in the front office when you're done, You know,
- 33:19maybe this is like a little bit of like a, a bartering going on.
- 33:22I don't know. And then on the Brandon Crawford
- 33:25side, like what's crazy is that he kind of had a career year
- 33:31three years ago, 20/21. That was the year the Giants won
- 33:37like 100 plus, wasn't it like 102?
- 33:40Some was in the water that year, I think 2021.
- 33:43He had 24 home runs career high, 90 RBIs career high. 107 wins.
- 33:52Then an 895 OPS career high. Yeah, that there was something
- 33:57going on in San Francisco that year.
- 33:59I saw too, that whole year. I mean, Darren Ruff was like in
- 34:03the headlines. I'm like, what sort of illegal
- 34:07activity is Manfred? What sort of black magic is
- 34:10Manfred working in San Francisco and for what reason?
- 34:13Like why? Why I?
- 34:14Don't know what, I don't know what happened.
- 34:17Totaled up a six one war that year.
- 34:23So maybe it's just like, hey, that was only three years ago,
- 34:25like I still got that somewhere in me.
- 34:29But you know, little lack of self-awareness.
- 34:31I don't know, like I said, there's to me it it doesn't
- 34:36really add up on the outside. I don't see why you would ruin
- 34:39what you have is like a legacy. Maybe the you know, the legacy
- 34:42is still there. Maybe you're forever going to be
- 34:45recognized as a giant. I don't think anyone's going to
- 34:47remember you as a cardinal. I don't know.
- 34:50No, and I'm not saying that people aren't going to remember
- 34:53him as that's not what I'm saying.
- 34:54He's. He's a giant.
- 34:55He's a it's like a small thing on the resume.
- 34:58Yeah, he's a forever Giant. I'm just saying, technically
- 35:01speaking, it's it just goes to show you how hard it is and how
- 35:05impressive it is when when guys actually do start to finish,
- 35:08they run the table with one team.
- 35:11Like you think of Brandon Crawford a Giant?
- 35:13Absolutely, but he was also Cardinal.
- 35:16It just makes you really appreciate when it actually does
- 35:19happen, especially a a career that long.
- 35:22I mean, not every not every guy is going to go out there and
- 35:24have an 18 year career like Fort.
- 35:26What was it, 14 years like that? He's.
- 35:28A very nice career. That is an incredible career.
- 35:32I mean, he was the Giants career leader in games played at
- 35:37shortstop at 1617. So very nice the dude posted.
- 35:43That's not a. Question or Gold gloves.
- 35:46I think it's whatever he had yeah very nice very solid
- 35:51career. I don't, I won't be.
- 35:55I just I won't be surprised if we see like him getting a
- 35:58coaching job or a front office job or even I don't know how he
- 36:03is, but he doesn't scream broadcast booth to me.
- 36:07But. I, I think I was reading that he
- 36:10wants to just take the take the family route and just sort of.
- 36:16Then I really don't understand the one year in Saint Louis.
- 36:18Maybe disassociate from baseball, I don't know.
- 36:21Pull a Brett Gardner and just fall off the map.
- 36:24Hey, no, no one's. No one's heard from that guy, by
- 36:27the way, he gave nobody. He gave us 14 years.
- 36:31Yeah, he he's deserved. He deserves some time with the
- 36:34fam. Yeah, real, real head scratcher
- 36:38for Saint Louis then. Well, pit stop there like.
- 36:42You said I'm not going to knock a guy for trying to get every
- 36:45last outs and that's what he tried to do.
- 36:47It just didn't paint out. But you know, like I said, heck
- 36:49of a career And the Giants will undoubtedly honour him
- 36:56accordingly. What is this episode man?
- 36:58This is this. Is this is like I said, this is
- 37:02what we've been dealt. A little spicier at the end
- 37:06though. We'll.
- 37:06Give me something we'll. Spice it up a little bit here.
- 37:10Apparently it was news to you because you had had yet to hear
- 37:13about it. But Manfred, it was announced
- 37:15today that or I think it was it, it was making its its rounds
- 37:20today. I think it may have been from a
- 37:22conversation with Manfred previously prior to today, but
- 37:29this golden rule thing that's floating around, it's really
- 37:34turning some heads. Talk to me, fill me in.
- 37:37I spent all day looking at building specs so.
- 37:41The golden rule, according to Rob Manfred, is this idea.
- 37:46You know, I don't want to say rule proposal because I, I think
- 37:50they're still floating it around, but it's, it would allow
- 37:54teams one opportunity per game to send their top hitter to the
- 38:00plate regardless of the batting order.
- 38:03Don't even stop, stop, don't even with this.
- 38:08This is crazy. Don't even.
- 38:11Yeah, crazy, insane. Stop.
- 38:16We're not Wait, don't don't drink the don't drink the the
- 38:20kool-aid, man. Don't do it.
- 38:23This is a terrible idea. This is the we talk all the time
- 38:27about not making baseball this like board game or this equation
- 38:31where you can just plug and play to like make it to maximize
- 38:35entertainment value. Like just leave the game alone.
- 38:38Like pitch clock finally came around to that.
- 38:43I guess. I don't know, but like, what are
- 38:46we, we're literally taking the, the structure of the game that's
- 38:51been around for over 100 years and just saying that's nice, but
- 38:56what if we did this? And hear me out when I say that
- 38:59I'm not saying that you, the game just has to stay the same
- 39:01forever. Obviously that's not the case
- 39:03because if that was the case, they, they, we, they wouldn't
- 39:06have baseball gloves. They'd still be playing with
- 39:08like a piece of a piece of newspaper in front of their hand
- 39:12to catch baseballs with. I don't know, but like, do you
- 39:19want me to read that again just so you can hear how insane?
- 39:22That is, I didn't say anything. I just.
- 39:24Gave you, I saw those, I saw those eyes.
- 39:26I saw and you looked, you looked, you looked a little
- 39:29intrigued and I don't like that. I'm intrigued to see how that
- 39:34would go and here's why I OK has had this idea I've I've heard it
- 39:41on on his on his show multiple times for like years now.
- 39:45Can I Can I reread the idea before we go anywhere?
- 39:48Reread the idea. Go ahead.
- 39:50Let me reread the idea here. The golden rule would allow
- 39:54teams one opportunity per game to send their top hitter to the
- 39:57plate regardless of the batting order.
- 40:02Proceed. Yeah, I don't know how the
- 40:05logistics work necessarily, but Michael Kay has had this idea on
- 40:09his show for years now. He's talked about.
- 40:12And the logic is, is that like when you look at other sports,
- 40:19when the game's on the line, Kevin Durant has the ball,
- 40:24LeBron James has the ball, Steph Curry has the ball, and the
- 40:30game's on the line. Your top player on the field in
- 40:33football, your quarterback, your running back, your wide
- 40:36receiver, your tight end have the opportunity to get the ball.
- 40:41That is the logic of it. But you.
- 40:44Can naturally manufacture that situation in basketball and
- 40:49maybe even football. But in baseball, I get it.
- 40:53It's. Just manufactured as a result of
- 40:55what happens during the game. I definitely get it.
- 40:58And if you're if you're artificially manufacturing this
- 41:02scenario every game, then it's. Like what?
- 41:05I'm just playing devil's advocate.
- 41:06I'm not, I hear you for it or against it necessarily.
- 41:08I'm just saying I can see why it's an idea.
- 41:12I can see why it's being thrown out there.
- 41:16And it is interesting because of the way that we've seen the game
- 41:26get so mapped out and so game planned.
- 41:35And when you're starting to see closers coming in the seventh,
- 41:37because that's the most difficult spot in the 9th inning
- 41:42is kind of like there, there's games that you and I have
- 41:44watched that were we see the game end in the 6th or 7th,
- 41:48we're like, if, if that team was going to come back, it was right
- 41:50there in that moment and they don't come back and the game
- 41:53ends right. We've seen those types of games.
- 41:57I think it's kind of interesting to have a wild card that you're
- 42:00like, you know what, all your analytics, all your game
- 42:04planning, all your mapped out, everything that's just written
- 42:08down and you're following the script from out one out 27.
- 42:12Here's a joker that we're going to throw into the mix.
- 42:16It's crazy, it's interesting, it's wild, it's a wild card.
- 42:24The golden rule. Is that what he called it?
- 42:29Yeah, yeah, the Golden Rule. How do rules, it's got to go by
- 42:34the it's, it's MOBPA too, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 42:42I can't see MOBPA going for that but.
- 42:46I, I, I just, I, I don't see how people can, can look at this and
- 42:55not view this as anything more than Major League Baseball
- 42:58trying to make itself into a video game, because that's the
- 43:00only scenario in which this would like, actually make sense.
- 43:04Sure. Yeah, no, you can't even do that
- 43:08in a video game, so I don't know what you're talking about there.
- 43:13Backyard backyard wiffle ball. Maybe backyard wiffle ball.
- 43:17Yeah, that there you go. Better example, it's throw a
- 43:20ghost runner. I'm coming back.
- 43:22I'm it's just insane. What do you mean it's my turn?
- 43:26Shut up. I'm like 6 years older than you.
- 43:29Just I'm up. Go.
- 43:30I'm up. OK, That exactly.
- 43:34I mean, that's the kind of insanity that we're talking
- 43:36about incorporating into Major League Baseball, like, the
- 43:41pinnacle of the sport. Yeah.
- 43:43Whoever you want to bring up to the plate.
- 43:45Cool. Fine with us.
- 43:47Yeah, it is. It is nuts.
- 43:50Sanity. What is it like the official
- 43:54report say that they're that the this is up for voting that this
- 43:58is just it's going to be tested somewhere like.
- 44:06Manfred said. They're quote, they're a variety
- 44:09of rule change ideas that are being talked about out there.
- 44:12One of them, there was a little buzz around it at an owners
- 44:17meeting. The idea of the Golden Bat.
- 44:23Trying to read this report. I just saw this today, so
- 44:26forgive me that I haven't had a chance to fully review it yet.
- 44:30I don't. Even know what it was, so you're
- 44:33forgiven. Yeah, Like this article that I'm
- 44:38reading, it was talking about how like we could see the Otani
- 44:41Trout thing like every game. I'm sorry, but if you, if you,
- 44:47if you manufacture this situation every night that Otani
- 44:51Trout moment no longer is is the Otani Trout moment.
- 44:55Why was that so incredible? Because it was manufactured
- 44:58naturally and it was like, and we talked about it when it
- 45:02happened, like we never get to see something like this.
- 45:06And now we're seeing this on the grandest stage and people can
- 45:10say like, oh, it was rigged. It was a world Baseball classic.
- 45:12Sure. But like, do you realize what
- 45:14kind of intricacies are involved in, in in rigging a situation
- 45:19like that? Stop.
- 45:21I'm not surprised that this is being brought up though, because
- 45:23like everything is trended this way.
- 45:25Everything is like the fact that we went interleague play, the
- 45:30fact that we went to now it's all year, then now it's mixed in
- 45:37randomly and you're going to both ballparks like you're
- 45:40splitting it halfway through the season.
- 45:42Like those moments of getting to see the Yankees and Wrigley or
- 45:47the Cubs and and Fenway or you know, whatever it may be.
- 45:53I'm not surprised that this is coming about.
- 45:55I'm not surprised that's I think that's my biggest thing.
- 45:58Like I, I've. But we don't draw the line.
- 46:01We talked about this. It's it's.
- 46:03Winning. Would you rather have would
- 46:06would you rather have robo UMS or this 'cause I'll take this
- 46:09over robo UMS? Don't put that evil on me.
- 46:12I would if you had to. Choose give me give me robo UMS
- 46:15because that's we're already headed that way.
- 46:17Like, you know, that's, you know, that's going to happen.
- 46:20So like whatever, just get it over over with.
- 46:22But we talked about this like where do you draw the line?
- 46:25The the rule changes are fine to a point.
- 46:28It's when you start impacting the actual game for the sake of
- 46:32entertainment. Like I understand it's a
- 46:35business, it's a product, but like, it's, it's, it's doing
- 46:39fine. Like we don't need to like go so
- 46:43far beyond, you know, like being able to look at the game as in a
- 46:51way that reflects what it used to be to where it just becomes
- 46:54so unrecognizable. And it's like, what are we?
- 46:56Here's here's a revision. Here's a revision to this.
- 47:05What if you you could only do it in extra innings?
- 47:09Get rid of the get rid of the runner on second.
- 47:12I think there could be some things that we could do to extra
- 47:14innings. I really do.
- 47:15I think there's a lot of things we could do before just throwing
- 47:18a runner on 2nd freely. I think there's a lot of things
- 47:23we can play with there because a Home Run Derby sounds nice.
- 47:29I'm going to be honest with you, I want to see an L screen just
- 47:32wheeled out there after 12 innings of time.
- 47:36Ball game. What is that L screen?
- 47:40Let's send it. What is what is this sport?
- 47:44What is this game? I don't meetings.
- 47:46I Oh my good. Who?
- 47:49What is happening? I.

- 48:14with our three O change UPS, it's where we pick a topic in
- 48:16the offseason or we pick many topics throughout the offseason
- 48:19and we just talk about them. They're not baseball related,
