- 0:02Speaker 1: suitable for all audiences.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised. Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:20Speaker 3: The bottom line here is you have a happy Christian Gonzalez.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Who knew we just had to get Fred and Evan
- 0:25Speaker 3: out of town to get this deal done? Really relieved
- 0:27Speaker 3: in all seriousness that we don't have to talk about
- 0:30Speaker 3: this anymore.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I was driving home from Banger to Arundel.
- 0:32Speaker 4: Weren't we all?
- 0:34Speaker 5: What's that drive like, Jack? Bridgestone tires on your car, truck, SUV,
- 0:37Speaker 5: or minivan? Tires.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Fred declared that we're allowed to call this a Super
- 0:41Speaker 3: Bowl rematch.
- 0:42Speaker 5: He decreed it.
- 0:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 0:43Speaker 5: He declared. It was funny. I went there. I've told
- 0:45Speaker 5: the story before, but you haven't heard it, Jack.
- 0:48Speaker 7: So it's new to you.
- 0:49Speaker 2: You don't have, like, Twitter alerts on?
- 0:51Speaker 5: God, no.
- 0:52Speaker 2: This is Patriots Unfiltered. Presented by Toyota.com. All right.
- 0:59Speaker 8: Welcome back to hour 13 of the Patriots postgame show.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Just kidding.
- 1:03Speaker 8: It's Patriots Unfiltered presented by Toyota. And yes, we are
- 1:07Speaker 8: back at it.
- 1:08Speaker 5: A little bit of sleep. We took a little rest.
- 1:10Speaker 5: We shuffled the chairs a little bit. And we have
- 1:12Speaker 5: the marvelous Alex here as well.
- 1:14Speaker 8: So back at it, guys, after I guess I would
- 1:17Speaker 8: describe it maybe as a dumpster fire.
- 1:19Speaker 7: I don't feel much better about it than I did
- 1:21Speaker 7: last night when I left here.
- 1:22Speaker 5: I don't feel better about it either. No, I really don't.
- 1:25Speaker 5: A lost opportunity.
- 1:26Speaker 8: I was pondering it. I think a lost opportunity is
- 1:28Speaker 8: a great way to put it. But right off the top,
- 1:32Speaker 8: I said all summer, I'm like, they're probably going to
- 1:33Speaker 8: have more injuries this year. Didn't expect to get one
- 1:35Speaker 8: half of A.J.
- 1:36Speaker 4: Brown.
- 1:36Speaker 5: And then he goes down.
- 1:38Speaker 8: And then you couple that with Drake May, which I
- 1:39Speaker 8: just thought, of course, the three interceptions at the end, Jack.
- 1:42Speaker 8: But just the overall performance, it just felt flat to
- 1:45Speaker 8: me across the board. As I said last night, hard
- 1:47Speaker 8: to pull out. Like, here's the positives to build out.
- 1:49Speaker 5: I know it's week one. They didn't play in the preseason.
- 1:51Speaker 5: There's a long way to go. but I'm frustrated.
- 1:55Speaker 9: I think, Deuce, to your point, you used up a
- 1:56Speaker 9: lot of that luck last year in terms of injuries,
- 1:58Speaker 9: in terms of some of the stuff that went your way,
- 2:00Speaker 9: and it felt like it, you know, the reverse happened
- 2:03Speaker 9: last night.
- 2:03Speaker 2: You know, the A.J.
- 2:04Speaker 9: Brown injury, Drake May in the fourth quarter. I mean,
- 2:07Speaker 9: the Seahawks didn't score their first points until three minutes
- 2:10Speaker 9: and 16 seconds left in the third quarter.
- 2:12Speaker 2: That's when they scored their first field goal of the game.
- 2:14Speaker 9: Just to tell you kind of the driver's seat that
- 2:17Speaker 9: the Patriots were in in that one, and just to
- 2:18Speaker 9: see it all unravel in Man, yeah, that was a tough–
- 2:21Speaker 9: I just watched the highlights this morning.
- 2:23Speaker 2: It was just tough, quick 15 minutes.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Highlights?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a generous term with some of those plays.
- 2:27Speaker 8: Alex, you were not with us last night, so what
- 2:31Speaker 8: were your.
- 2:31Speaker 5: Thoughts on the game?
- 2:32Speaker 10: It's so rare that I'm with you guys the day
- 2:34Speaker 10: after a game to kind of get to just have
- 2:37Speaker 10: our knee-jerk reactions, for.
- 2:38Speaker 11: Lack of a better phrase.
- 2:39Speaker 5: But I don't know, woof.
- 2:42Speaker 10: I'm asking you guys if you feel better about it
- 2:44Speaker 10: this morning, but I might feel worse about it this morning.
- 2:46Speaker 10: I think last night I went to bed and I
- 2:48Speaker 10: was like, was that as bad as it looked? Like,
- 2:50Speaker 10: that's a great defense. But then I'm like, they're also
- 2:53Speaker 10: without a lot of really good players in their secondary.
- 2:56Speaker 10: And then like, I almost texted you guys to say
- 2:59Speaker 10: like Patriots bingo, opposing quarterback is down, you know, like
- 3:04Speaker 10: take a shot or whatever the drinking game is that
- 3:06Speaker 10: we can come up with.
- 3:07Speaker 5: But I don't know.
- 3:08Speaker 10: Then I wake up today and I'm just like, They
- 3:11Speaker 10: did not take advantage of bad football. They were just
- 3:13Speaker 10: between the penalty flags from Seattle.
- 3:15Speaker 11: I don't even know. Where do you guys want to start?
- 3:17Speaker 5: I kind of feel like they did take advantage of
- 3:18Speaker 5: the bad football because.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That was kind of.
- 3:19Speaker 8: What a big part of their offense was. Paul, what
- 3:23Speaker 8: were you pondering on your drive to and fro work
- 3:26Speaker 8: over the last 10 hours?
- 3:27Speaker 3: Obviously, the big takeaway is Drake May. You can't have this.
- 3:32Speaker 3: We made so much of in year three, in year
- 3:35Speaker 3: two of the Josh McDaniel system, he's going to be
- 3:37Speaker 3: empowered to be more of a decision maker at the
- 3:40Speaker 3: line of scrimmage, having the ability to get in and
- 3:43Speaker 3: out of things and to have him sort of lose
- 3:46Speaker 3: focus and get impatient, his word, not mine, in the
- 3:50Speaker 3: fourth quarter and try to play a little hero ball.
- 3:52Speaker 3: That's obviously the big takeaway. And that's ultimately why they
- 3:56Speaker 3: lost the game. But there are so many other reasons
- 3:58Speaker 3: why they lost the game as well. And this is
- 3:59Speaker 3: not to take Drake May off the hook. We spent Basically,
- 4:03Speaker 3: an hour and a half. You know, it's telling you
- 4:04Speaker 3: all the things that Drake May didn't do well in
- 4:07Speaker 3: the game last night. But I just feel like there
- 4:09Speaker 3: was a lost opportunity. You go to Seattle and they
- 4:13Speaker 3: have this emotion of banner raising night and they lose
- 4:16Speaker 3: their quarterback on the fifth play of the game. You
- 4:19Speaker 3: know you do not have to score a lot of
- 4:21Speaker 3: points to win now. I thought incorrectly that it was
- 4:24Speaker 3: going to be a high scoring game. The quarterback goes out.
- 4:27Speaker 3: That's out the window. And you still couldn't generate anything.
- 4:31Speaker 3: And on top of all that, you probably lost your
- 4:35Speaker 3: best offensive weapon for at least the foreseeable future. I mean,
- 4:39Speaker 3: I know there's multiple reports out there indicating it's a
- 4:41Speaker 3: high ankle sprain for A.J.
- 4:42Speaker 12: Brown.
- 4:44Speaker 7: Those linger.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Those are tough, especially for receivers. So I wouldn't expect
- 4:47Speaker 3: to see him for at least a month. You know,
- 4:49Speaker 3: I'm not a doctor, so I'm not going to speculate
- 4:52Speaker 3: beyond that. But high ankle sprains are no joke.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Yeah. The fallout this morning, we want to hear from
- 4:57Speaker 5: you guys, of course.
- 4:57Speaker 8: We had to leave the phone line still going last night.
- 4:59Speaker 8: People were calling us well into the morning. 855-PATS-500. Give
- 5:03Speaker 8: us a ring. Shoot us an email. Podcast at Patriots.com.
- 5:06Speaker 8: A lot of venting going on on social media. Come
- 5:09Speaker 8: here with us this afternoon. We're leading up to 1 o'clock.
- 5:11Speaker 8: We will hear from Mike Vrabel. We'll take that live
- 5:14Speaker 8: coming up in a little bit under an hour. Go ahead, Jack.
- 5:17Speaker 9: I just think that's what makes it worse this morning.
- 5:20Speaker 9: For the Seahawks last night, it's tough. Sam Darnold, I
- 5:22Speaker 9: haven't heard any reports on what that might be, but
- 5:25Speaker 9: you're focused on the game. That injury is the nature
- 5:28Speaker 9: of football. We'll deal with the injury after the fact.
- 5:30Speaker 9: Focus on handling this game right now. And the Seahawks
- 5:33Speaker 9: fans got to do that. They got to celebrate a
- 5:35Speaker 9: win with Drew Locke. Right now, this morning, they're probably realizing, oh, crap.
- 5:39Speaker 9: Sam Darnold, we might be screwed. Whereas the Patriots, not
- 5:41Speaker 9: only is it the loss, then you wake up this
- 5:43Speaker 9: morning with that feeling of the loss. Oh, and that
- 5:45Speaker 9: shiny new toy that you just brought in is going
- 5:48Speaker 9: to be out of commission for a little while.
- 5:49Speaker 11: Who would you guys rather be this morning?
- 5:51Speaker 4: What position?
- 5:51Speaker 8: I was thinking about this on my long commute. At
- 5:54Speaker 8: least from Seattle's point of view, I know I can
- 5:55Speaker 8: believe in my defense and that no matter what game
- 5:58Speaker 8: you're going to play, you know that you have a
- 5:59Speaker 8: chance with those guys.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Making plays.
- 6:02Speaker 8: I did go back and watch a little of the defense,
- 6:04Speaker 8: ground the tape a little bit.
- 6:06Speaker 5: You know, those guys are awesome up front.
- 6:07Speaker 8: They control the line of scrimmage on both sides of
- 6:10Speaker 8: the ball, but especially, I would say, on the defensive
- 6:12Speaker 8: side of the ball.
- 6:13Speaker 5: My keys to the game are run the ball and
- 6:15Speaker 5: stop the run. They didn't do either of those things.
- 6:16Speaker 8: So I just– I struggle finding– you know, and look, again,
- 6:20Speaker 8: like week one, I remember having similar feelings after those
- 6:24Speaker 8: first couple losses they had last year, being like, jeepers,
- 6:26Speaker 8: do we have the guys to do this?
- 6:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:28Speaker 8: And they did kind of turn it around, but I'm
- 6:30Speaker 8: kind of back at that place right now, Paul, where
- 6:32Speaker 8: I'm looking at the defense specifically just to start there.
- 6:35Speaker 5: We can get off Drake May for a sec.
- 6:37Speaker 8: And saying, who are the players on this defense that
- 6:38Speaker 8: are on the upswing, that are building pieces? I have
- 6:41Speaker 8: a couple, but I wonder with some of these older
- 6:44Speaker 8: players if we're kind of seeing the peak and maybe
- 6:46Speaker 8: the crest.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, to answer that specific question, Christian Gonzalez,
- 6:50Speaker 3: I thought, was Christian Gonzalez, as he normally has been.
- 6:55Speaker 7: And, you know, I still.
- 6:56Speaker 3: have that feeling with Milton Williams. But to your point,
- 7:00Speaker 3: I'm not sure who else I have that feeling with.
- 7:02Speaker 3: I thought Draymond Jones showed up last night. I thought
- 7:04Speaker 3: he had some pressure. I thought the edges were a
- 7:07Speaker 3: problem again, you know, in the run game. Strangely, I
- 7:11Speaker 3: didn't think Seattle ran the ball enough, especially with Price.
- 7:13Speaker 13: He looked good.
- 7:14Speaker 7: Yeah, he averaged over five yards a carry.
- 7:16Speaker 5: They really didn't... Away from him, it felt like, for
- 7:18Speaker 5: a period. I remember you saying, like, where's Price been?
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:21Speaker 3: And they would go into that other guy there, the
- 7:24Speaker 3: third down back, whose name escapes me now. But I
- 7:27Speaker 3: thought they got away from him a little bit. And
- 7:30Speaker 3: what's it, Helani, George Helani for Seattle. I don't know
- 7:35Speaker 3: what else you hang your hat on. I didn't think
- 7:37Speaker 3: it was a great game for Craig Woodson, who I
- 7:39Speaker 3: thought his arrow has really been pointing up as his
- 7:42Speaker 3: rookie season continued. And I thought the linebackers were a
- 7:47Speaker 3: little bit shoddy in their time. I thought Christian Ellis
- 7:49Speaker 3: got off to a really strong start, but then that
- 7:51Speaker 3: kind of faded as well. So I think there were
- 7:54Speaker 3: some good things defensively.
- 7:56Speaker 7: But not enough.
- 7:56Speaker 3: I thought the biggest problem for Seattle offensively, beyond not
- 8:00Speaker 3: having their quarterback, was they just couldn't line up properly.
- 8:03Speaker 3: And that took a lot of plays off the board
- 8:04Speaker 3: for the Seahawks.
- 8:06Speaker 9: Yeah, a lot of pre-snap penalties for them, which certainly
- 8:08Speaker 9: gave the Patriots, awarded the Patriots some points there as well.
- 8:11Speaker 9: And I think you saw the defense get tired last night, too,
- 8:13Speaker 9: as they just kept getting stressed and stressed and you know,
- 8:15Speaker 9: the ball, it just kept changing possession. I mean, three
- 8:18Speaker 9: sudden change situations, I guess at the end, that sudden
- 8:20Speaker 9: change doesn't really matter. Game's over at that point once
- 8:22Speaker 9: Drake throws that third interception. But those two at the
- 8:25Speaker 9: beginning and middle of the fourth quarter, you know, as
- 8:26Speaker 9: your defense is already getting their first snaps of the
- 8:29Speaker 9: year after not playing in the preseason, getting your first
- 8:31Speaker 9: game action to put that much stress on them in
- 8:34Speaker 9: the fourth quarter.
- 8:35Speaker 2: You saw what happened. Honestly, it is pretty impressive.
- 8:38Speaker 9: They, you know, bent and did not break with those
- 8:41Speaker 9: two field goals instead of letting up touchdowns in some
- 8:42Speaker 9: of those situations.
- 8:43Speaker 5: A minor silver lining of it.
- 8:44Speaker 8: We were talking about questions for Vrabel today, Paul, and
- 8:47Speaker 8: one that I kind of have is what we talked
- 8:49Speaker 8: about last night was why the sudden change after A.J.
- 8:53Speaker 5: Brown went out. It was A.J. Brown went out and
- 8:55Speaker 5: now we start getting penalties.
- 8:57Speaker 2: They look flat. I do think it deflated them.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And Mike, you made that point, um, live when we
- 9:03Speaker 3: were all watching the game, Alex, you know, you missed
- 9:05Speaker 3: some of Mike's witty little ball.
- 9:09Speaker 11: We're on the same page though. Cause I said the
- 9:11Speaker 11: same thing.
- 9:12Speaker 7: So I wanted to look it up.
- 9:13Speaker 11: Not that they really ever had it in their favor,
- 9:15Speaker 11: but it shifted.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 9:17Speaker 7: I do think it deflated them.
- 9:20Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 3: They didn't really do anything with them either. Um, and
- 9:23Speaker 3: that is the, you know, the bottom line. And I,
- 9:25Speaker 3: and I actually have the numbers broken down as you know,
- 9:27Speaker 3: I am wanted to do. Um, They had 149 yards
- 9:31Speaker 3: when A.J. Brown was in the game through the first
- 9:35Speaker 3: series of the third quarter. They had 128 yards thereafter.
- 9:39Speaker 3: They scored seven points with him, three points without him.
- 9:41Speaker 3: So they really didn't do anything either way. And part
- 9:46Speaker 3: of that, I think, was on Drake May. I think
- 9:48Speaker 3: he took points off the board. I think they should
- 9:50Speaker 3: have had points. Obviously, they should have at very minimum
- 9:52Speaker 3: had the tying field goal at the end. You cannot
- 9:55Speaker 3: make that last pick. But I do agree with Mike's
- 9:59Speaker 3: large point that he had live when it happened. It
- 10:02Speaker 3: was like, geez, it just seems like the air just
- 10:03Speaker 3: went out of the offense.
- 10:05Speaker 7: And I agree with you. It did look like that.
- 10:06Speaker 5: I'd like to know what the numbers, too, were on
- 10:08Speaker 5: the penalties.
- 10:08Speaker 8: Because I don't know if it was exactly an even
- 10:11Speaker 8: split where it was like the Seahawks had all theirs
- 10:13Speaker 8: in the first half and the Patriots had all.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Theirs in the second half.
- 10:15Speaker 5: I don't think the Patriots had one until the third.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:18Speaker 7: Late in the third.
- 10:18Speaker 5: I'm pretty sure.
- 10:19Speaker 7: And they ended up with like seven or eight penalties
- 10:21Speaker 7: in the game, too.
- 10:21Speaker 11: Right.
- 10:22Speaker 5: So what, you know, that's just, it's all part of the.
- 10:24Speaker 7: You know, just seven, seven penalties for the Patriots. And
- 10:28Speaker 7: they were all late.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Yeah. And think about two Paul.
- 10:31Speaker 9: I mean, the one time the Patriots drove all the
- 10:34Speaker 9: way down the field, punched it in was because AJ
- 10:36Speaker 9: Brown PI, right? I mean, it's, it's, that was kind
- 10:38Speaker 9: of the only, the only, and in fairness that that's
- 10:42Speaker 9: like a 40 yard play that doesn't count in the
- 10:44Speaker 9: total yard.
- 10:45Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 14: Right.
- 10:46Speaker 3: You know, so that is another 40 yards you would
- 10:48Speaker 3: add to the AJ Brown side of it, but they
- 10:49Speaker 3: only scored seven points with AJ Brown into the third quarter.
- 10:52Speaker 10: I just feel like, I know nothing about play calling, obviously, right?
- 10:57Speaker 10: I just feel like they weren't, like, aggressive at all.
- 11:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 11:00Speaker 11: They didn't take advantage of, like, even when A.J.
- 11:03Speaker 10: Brown went down, okay, run Kyle Williams out there and
- 11:06Speaker 10: test the secondary.
- 11:07Speaker 5: And I don't know.
- 11:08Speaker 11: It just felt like they were, like, literally still scared
- 11:11Speaker 11: from the Super Bowl.
- 11:12Speaker 5: I wonder that, too. The defensive front.
- 11:13Speaker 8: I wonder specifically with Drake. I mean, Jack, you sent
- 11:15Speaker 8: a clip this morning of. You know, bailing on the
- 11:17Speaker 8: pocket a little bit earlier. I saw Giardi. He was rewatching.
- 11:20Speaker 8: He felt similarly.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been making fun of Giardi on the test.
- 11:23Speaker 3: For watching it again. For being an all-22 ball mower.
- 11:26Speaker 5: I did a little, man. It was pretty painful. Not
- 11:30Speaker 5: a lot. Not a lot to take.
- 11:33Speaker 8: But, you know, the Drake performance is what's going to
- 11:36Speaker 8: get talked about the most here over the next 10 days.
- 11:38Speaker 3: And it should because that's the most glaring thing that happened.
- 11:41Speaker 3: I would make an argument, and it might be a
- 11:43Speaker 3: little bit of a stretch, had all three of those
- 11:45Speaker 3: interceptions wound up as incomplete passes, I think there's a
- 11:50Speaker 3: really good chance that it's 13-13 in overtime.
- 11:53Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Because the first pick comes on second and nine. They
- 12:00Speaker 3: didn't convert anything over eight yards on a third down
- 12:02Speaker 3: all night, so they probably were going to punt on
- 12:04Speaker 3: that possession. The next pick came on third and 14.
- 12:06Speaker 3: You're going to punt if it's incomplete. And the last
- 12:09Speaker 3: pick came on third and five. You're going to kick
- 12:10Speaker 3: the field goal if it's incomplete. And I assume that
- 12:12Speaker 3: Borgalis would have made, it would have been about a
- 12:14Speaker 3: 34-yard field goal. I'm going to assume that's, you know,
- 12:19Speaker 3: that's an over 90% conversion rate. So I'm going to
- 12:22Speaker 3: say there's a good chance it's 13-13. I'm not ignoring
- 12:25Speaker 3: that the picks, as you said, Jack, sudden change, gets
- 12:28Speaker 3: the defense back out there, maybe without, you know, a
- 12:32Speaker 3: little extra time to rest, and with a little better
- 12:34Speaker 3: field position.
- 12:35Speaker 7: Those are not irrelevant.
- 12:36Speaker 16: Yep.
- 12:37Speaker 3: They scored the first 10 points off the first two picks, right?
- 12:40Speaker 3: Two turnovers lead to 10 points. I'm not ignoring, but
- 12:44Speaker 3: it wasn't like the picks set them up in the
- 12:47Speaker 3: red zone and they had short fields. They had shorter
- 12:49Speaker 3: fields than they would have had, but I don't think
- 12:52Speaker 3: that's the only reason. I think Seattle kind of figured
- 12:54Speaker 3: it out offensively. you know, in the middle of the
- 12:56Speaker 3: third quarter, and they started sort of realizing, hey, we
- 12:59Speaker 3: can throw on them too.
- 13:00Speaker 7: Drew Locke threw for 187 yards.
- 13:02Speaker 9: And that is where, if I'm a Seattle fan, I
- 13:03Speaker 9: loved your question, who would you rather be this morning?
- 13:06Speaker 7: It's a great question. I don't have an answer for it.
- 13:08Speaker 7: That's why I ignored it.
- 13:09Speaker 11: I'd rather be the Patriots.
- 13:10Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I did see a report that Darnold,
- 13:13Speaker 8: I think it was promising. I guess it's not a fracture,
- 13:15Speaker 8: so that's, you know, good.
- 13:17Speaker 5: But we'll see.
- 13:18Speaker 8: They're going to have to play some games without Drew Locke.
- 13:20Speaker 8: And for a team that is going to be in
- 13:21Speaker 8: an absolute dogfight in the NFC West, I mean, getting
- 13:24Speaker 8: that win was huge for them.
- 13:25Speaker 5: They're going to have to try to squeak some more.
- 13:27Speaker 11: Locke was like low-key slinging the ball yesterday.
- 13:29Speaker 5: He was.
- 13:29Speaker 2: He was slinging it.
- 13:30Speaker 9: And the thing about it is the way they were
- 13:32Speaker 9: calling plays and what made it so successful is they're
- 13:34Speaker 9: running a lot of play action, a lot of naked
- 13:36Speaker 9: boot stuff.
- 13:36Speaker 5: But when you're running the ball like that and you
- 13:38Speaker 5: have that offensive line.
- 13:39Speaker 11: I didn't realize he was kind of quick either.
- 13:40Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, and like the positions they were putting
- 13:42Speaker 9: him in is a lot of the fact due to
- 13:44Speaker 9: that offensive line, the other weapons they have. I mean,
- 13:46Speaker 9: that touchdown pass. That's a five-yard stop route to JSN,
- 13:49Speaker 9: and he's just going. We were talking about it last night.
- 13:52Speaker 9: That is what an elite playmaker in the NFL does.
- 13:54Speaker 9: You give him the ball five yards, and he does
- 13:56Speaker 9: the rest. You know what you found out last night?
- 13:57Speaker 3: Not that you didn't already know that, but Jackson Smith
- 14:00Speaker 3: and Jigbert is quarterback proof.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Yeah. No doubt, which helps them. But I think that
- 14:04Speaker 2: is a lot to unpack.
- 14:06Speaker 9: And for Drake May, you're bothered about how he's looked
- 14:10Speaker 9: against some of the top defenses in the past couple times.
- 14:12Speaker 2: We've seen him.
- 14:13Speaker 9: And it's one of those things where, okay– In my head,
- 14:17Speaker 9: as I'm rationalizing it, it's okay. He has been playing
- 14:20Speaker 9: the top defenses in the league. I mean, that Texans
- 14:22Speaker 9: defense is probably one of the best we've seen in
- 14:23Speaker 9: a while. Probably with Mike McDonald, that head coach, that
- 14:26Speaker 9: Seahawks one, probably one of the best we've seen in
- 14:28Speaker 9: a decade as well. But you want him to step
- 14:32Speaker 9: up to.
- 14:32Speaker 2: The challenge, right?
- 14:33Speaker 9: So that's the thing that bothers me is you try
- 14:35Speaker 9: to maybe even try to find an excuse for him.
- 14:37Speaker 9: You're like, but you want him to play well. against
- 14:39Speaker 9: the best and he just hasn't.
- 14:40Speaker 8: I think the question in my head is what is
- 14:42Speaker 8: real right now with Drake May and what isn't? And
- 14:44Speaker 8: this is a what have you done for me lately
- 14:46Speaker 8: league and it's been a rough stretch for Drake May.
- 14:49Speaker 8: We have plenty of, you know, excuses and things that,
- 14:51Speaker 8: you know, details that can add some context to that.
- 14:54Speaker 8: But the bottom line is he has not played well
- 14:56Speaker 8: and we've kind of lost, I think, that feeling of
- 14:59Speaker 8: this is an MVP candidate. You know, you would hope
- 15:02Speaker 8: last night that that kind of player is going to
- 15:05Speaker 8: see the opportunity with the other team not having their quarterback,
- 15:08Speaker 8: the other team not having arguably their most key defensive player,
- 15:11Speaker 8: and being able to take advantage of it.
- 15:13Speaker 5: That's what stings.
- 15:15Speaker 3: It's hard to argue with any of that. And I didn't,
- 15:17Speaker 3: you know, Alex, you were joking around about the Patriots
- 15:19Speaker 3: bingo card. I did not have, you know, sort of
- 15:21Speaker 3: a Drake May fourth quarter meltdown on my bingo card.
- 15:24Speaker 3: I just didn't really even have that as a possibility.
- 15:27Speaker 11: I know that last drive, the feeling was good.
- 15:31Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 15:31Speaker 8: Well, I have a little stat to share, but first, hey,
- 15:33Speaker 8: Patriots fan, up your game by going to toyota.com to
- 15:36Speaker 8: see the best selection of hybrid all-wheel drive and four-wheel
- 15:39Speaker 8: drive vehicles of any brand. Toyota is the official vehicle
- 15:42Speaker 8: of the New England Patriots. Toyota lets go places. So
- 15:45Speaker 8: I did a little bit of research, because, Paul, I
- 15:46Speaker 8: love coming up with little questions for you guys. So
- 15:50Speaker 8: the question is, how many times did Tom Brady throw
- 15:53Speaker 8: three or more, which is three or four, three or
- 15:56Speaker 8: four picks in his career?
- 15:59Speaker 7: I'd say, I mean... 20 years?
- 16:02Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 16:04Speaker 7: I'm going to say 10 times.
- 16:06Speaker 5: Nine times, Paul.
- 16:07Speaker 2: This guy.
- 16:08Speaker 5: You can't even.
- 16:09Speaker 8: I mean, you come up with things to try to.
- 16:11Speaker 8: You want to guess what his record was in those games?
- 16:15Speaker 5: One and eight. Oh, and nine.
- 16:16Speaker 4: Oh.
- 16:17Speaker 5: Just went off again.
- 16:18Speaker 8: But the interesting thing to me about this, and look,
- 16:20Speaker 8: I'm not trying to like polish the turd of last night,
- 16:23Speaker 8: you know, but just a little context.
- 16:25Speaker 5: Of those nine games, okay, one, two, three, four, five, six,
- 16:28Speaker 5: seven of them, came in Tom Brady's first six years
- 16:31Speaker 5: as a starter.
- 16:32Speaker 8: The last two, 2011, he had a four-pick game, and
- 16:34Speaker 8: in 2020, he had a three-pick game. So just a
- 16:37Speaker 8: little bit of context. Early in your career, these things
- 16:40Speaker 8: do happen. It was Drake May's first three-interception game.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Like I said, I'm not anywhere near as bothered by
- 16:46Speaker 3: the interceptions. That's why I kind of made the point.
- 16:48Speaker 3: I think it would have been 13-13 if there was
- 16:50Speaker 3: three incomplete passes.
- 16:52Speaker 7: I'm much more bothered.
- 16:54Speaker 3: I really was all in on this offense being high-powered
- 16:58Speaker 3: and going to be I thought they were equipped to
- 17:02Speaker 3: knock on the door 30 points last night. Even on
- 17:05Speaker 3: the road against that defense, I was so in on Brown, Dobbs, May.
- 17:10Speaker 3: And we didn't see it. And we didn't see it
- 17:13Speaker 3: before the picks. The first three quarters, they still only
- 17:15Speaker 3: had 10 points. And with all those guys missing in
- 17:19Speaker 3: that Seattle secondary, we can get into maybe some of
- 17:23Speaker 3: the decisions that we talked about last night during the
- 17:25Speaker 3: post-game show part one. when we talked about their willingness
- 17:30Speaker 3: or kind of stubbornness just running the ball over and
- 17:33Speaker 3: over again on early downs.
- 17:35Speaker 9: And what was so frustrating about running the ball on
- 17:37Speaker 9: those early downs, getting stuffed, it felt like Groundhog Day.
- 17:39Speaker 9: Same thing in the Super Bowl. Okay, now you're behind
- 17:41Speaker 9: the sticks, like Troy kept saying. Now you're back in
- 17:43Speaker 9: the 60s. Troy was telling us last night about the
- 17:45Speaker 9: difference between third and seven and third and five.
- 17:47Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Even because just the routes
- 17:49Speaker 2: you can run.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Like the third downs they converted, they're all third and threes,
- 17:53Speaker 3: third and fours, quick throws. You know, sometimes he scrambled out.
- 17:58Speaker 3: And it was just so similar to the Super Bowl.
- 18:02Speaker 3: I think they just kind of, you know, maybe they
- 18:04Speaker 3: were a little guilty of giving Seattle a little too
- 18:06Speaker 3: much respect. You know, we don't want to spread them
- 18:09Speaker 3: out because we don't want to allow those guys because
- 18:11Speaker 3: they didn't blitz as much in this game. Mike, you
- 18:13Speaker 3: had the numbers last night. I could pretend to remember them,
- 18:17Speaker 3: but I don't. But I think you recall that they
- 18:20Speaker 3: did not send the amount of pressure that with those
- 18:23Speaker 3: different exotic blitzes that they did in the Super Bowl.
- 18:26Speaker 5: Mostly four-man. All the picks were on four-man rush.
- 18:29Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't know if maybe Josh McDaniels didn't
- 18:32Speaker 3: want to allow those guys to really pick away. Because
- 18:34Speaker 3: I thought the tackles were a little better in pass
- 18:37Speaker 3: protection last night. I thought they had some issues on
- 18:39Speaker 3: the interior in pass protection. But it wasn't– I just–
- 18:45Speaker 3: I feel like when you just continue to get into
- 18:48Speaker 3: second and eighth, third and ninth, It's not winning football
- 18:52Speaker 3: against good defenses. You're not going to be able to
- 18:54Speaker 3: have your MVP candidate bail you out time and time again,
- 18:58Speaker 3: and last night they couldn't do it.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Sorry, go ahead.
- 19:00Speaker 10: I was just going to say, not to mention what
- 19:01Speaker 10: it's doing to Ramondre. You're already down a running back.
- 19:05Speaker 10: How many touches did Ramondre Stevenson have last night? How
- 19:08Speaker 10: many times could he not even get out of the backfield?
- 19:11Speaker 3: And even on all the catches, he was taking hits.
- 19:14Speaker 7: Those little dump-offs over the middle, he was taking hits.
- 19:17Speaker 5: It's the two years ago against Cincinnati.
- 19:19Speaker 7: That's what it reminded me of.
- 19:21Speaker 8: He's just getting killed and having to drag three guys
- 19:24Speaker 8: to just get three yards. Meanwhile, it looks like the
- 19:26Speaker 8: Patriots have one of their wide zones runs stuffed up,
- 19:29Speaker 8: and then, oh no, the guy cuts back up and
- 19:31Speaker 8: it gets at least three, four, five yards for a
- 19:33Speaker 8: successful play.
- 19:35Speaker 5: It's just, it's tough.
- 19:37Speaker 8: I think I'm, what's apparent to me, though, is based
- 19:41Speaker 8: on what they did, they thought they could run the ball, right? Like,
- 19:44Speaker 8: they thought they could find some space and stay balanced
- 19:47Speaker 8: and put the defense out of what they wanted to
- 19:49Speaker 8: do which, again, is more surprising in the context of
- 19:52Speaker 8: they're missing their best safeties. They're promoting guys off the
- 19:55Speaker 8: practice squad to play safety, and you're.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Just trying to run into whatever defense. To me, I mean,
- 20:01Speaker 3: they were missing all those guys in the back end.
- 20:03Speaker 3: Logic would have dictated, let's see if these backups... Now,
- 20:07Speaker 3: I'll give those guys credit.
- 20:08Speaker 7: I thought... The guy who had the first pick, whose
- 20:10Speaker 7: name is also escaping me, and the.
- 20:13Speaker 3: Kid that they brought up off the practice squad, Rodney Thomas,
- 20:16Speaker 3: I think, the kid from Yale. I thought those guys
- 20:18Speaker 3: played pretty well, all things considered. They were around the
- 20:21Speaker 3: ball a lot. They were competitive. You know, the corner
- 20:24Speaker 3: that was in coverage on the slant that A.J. Brown
- 20:26Speaker 3: got hurt on, that was really good coverage. It was
- 20:28Speaker 3: kind of a bad throw by Drake, but still, you know,
- 20:30Speaker 3: it's pretty tight coverage on a guy like A.J.
- 20:32Speaker 7: Brown.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And then they just kept running. I think they ran
- 20:35Speaker 3: the ball on first down 14 times. and averaged two
- 20:38Speaker 3: yards a carry on those 14 plays. They threw the
- 20:41Speaker 3: ball seven times, I believe, on first down and averaged
- 20:43Speaker 3: over seven yards a play.
- 20:46Speaker 7: I just felt like they did it backwards.
- 20:47Speaker 8: Well, yeah, in regards to that, I saw a stat
- 20:48Speaker 8: that said their success rate on first down runs would
- 20:51Speaker 8: have had them dead last in the league last year
- 20:53Speaker 8: with how well they ran the ball. So it's just
- 20:56Speaker 8: hard to get anything going, and that's why you get
- 20:59Speaker 8: out of this game and you're, all right, what do
- 21:01Speaker 8: we look at and say? And I will say, looking
- 21:04Speaker 8: back at the defense a little bit, I thought there
- 21:05Speaker 8: were some great snaps of coverage.
- 21:07Speaker 5: I thought that there was.
- 21:08Speaker 7: A really well, you know, especially in the first quarter.
- 21:11Speaker 7: I agree, Mike.
- 21:11Speaker 8: It looked like it looked last year where you've got
- 21:13Speaker 8: the rush coming and everybody is right on a man. Well,
- 21:16Speaker 8: you know, it didn't go as well once they kind
- 21:18Speaker 8: of started checking down and targeting the linebackers a little bit. And,
- 21:22Speaker 8: you know, some of those little dump off passes, the
- 21:24Speaker 8: JSM one, but that's always seems where this defense is
- 21:27Speaker 8: getting killed is like right in the flat. And that
- 21:31Speaker 8: to me is a problem they got to start to
- 21:33Speaker 8: figure out.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yeah, certainly, and Paul pointed that out last night.
- 21:35Speaker 9: A lot of that, at least pressure on the quarterback,
- 21:37Speaker 9: the few sacks were because, most of the time, because
- 21:40Speaker 9: of tight coverage in the back end. You know, he's
- 21:42Speaker 9: going on the third read, and all of a sudden
- 21:43Speaker 9: you get home.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I think both sacks they had were because of what
- 21:46Speaker 3: Mike talked about.
- 21:47Speaker 8: Yeah, they had that solid coverage. I mean, Ackes comes
- 21:50Speaker 8: loops around. You know, I mean, it takes a while
- 21:53Speaker 8: to get there. But I think overall the thing that
- 21:55Speaker 8: just concerned me is you watch and there's one side
- 21:58Speaker 8: of the ball clearly winning, and especially their offensive line
- 22:01Speaker 8: with that Gray Zabel inside. you know, the guys, the
- 22:05Speaker 8: depth guys like Lenny T, Josh Farmer, you know, you're
- 22:08Speaker 8: not getting great play out of them as the depth guys.
- 22:12Speaker 8: And I think you start to see the depth concerns
- 22:15Speaker 8: manifesting themselves as we get into the regular season. And
- 22:17Speaker 8: you see the guys that are being forced to play
- 22:19Speaker 8: to get them into sub packages. You know, Del Pettis
- 22:22Speaker 8: is playing a bunch when they put a fullback on
- 22:23Speaker 8: the field and You just need your top-end guys to
- 22:26Speaker 8: play great because you don't have the depth guys that
- 22:28Speaker 8: are going to come out of nowhere and make plays.
- 22:30Speaker 2: I couldn't agree with you more, Deuce.
- 22:32Speaker 9: What was so concerning about the lack of ability to
- 22:34Speaker 9: run the ball in the preseason is there were guys
- 22:36Speaker 9: out there who were going to play snaps. Raritan last
- 22:39Speaker 9: night in the run game did not have a go,
- 22:41Speaker 9: and he was welcomed to the NFL in a big
- 22:43Speaker 9: way against one of the best defenses in the league
- 22:45Speaker 9: because he was getting bullied there on some of that
- 22:47Speaker 9: split flow where he's coming across the line of scrimmage
- 22:49Speaker 9: in the backfield looking to kick out a D-ender, an
- 22:51Speaker 9: outside linebacker. and he was getting no movement. If anything,
- 22:54Speaker 9: he was getting pushed back. So that was tough to see,
- 22:56Speaker 9: and a big reason why the run game just wasn't
- 22:58Speaker 9: as effective there, especially early.
- 23:00Speaker 2: No movement.
- 23:01Speaker 5: That's what it looked like to me.
- 23:02Speaker 8: They're going to have to find a way. Maybe get
- 23:05Speaker 8: Travion back. I found myself, Paul, we all kind of
- 23:08Speaker 8: agreed going into the game last night that not a
- 23:10Speaker 8: huge deal to miss Travion, but I think with some
- 23:13Speaker 8: of the back's, the way like remandre was open for
- 23:16Speaker 8: some of those dump offs and stuff like maybe trevion
- 23:18Speaker 8: could have helped in that regard and you know giving
- 23:20Speaker 8: them a little juice underneath i don't know i'm grasping.
- 23:22Speaker 3: Maybe not necessarily in the passes but i did think
- 23:25Speaker 3: there were a couple of runs that they caught them
- 23:27Speaker 3: in passing situations where they ran and you know like
- 23:31Speaker 3: even the third and two draw maybe uh henderson's explosiveness
- 23:36Speaker 3: gets that uh you know not the third and two
- 23:38Speaker 3: is third and five yeah middle um Maybe his explosiveness
- 23:42Speaker 3: allows him to maybe shoot through a gap, but for
- 23:46Speaker 3: the most part, Ramondre was getting hit in the backfield consistently,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and I don't really care who's running the ball.
- 23:51Speaker 7: You're going to have a hard time.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Both him and Kiner were under three yards a carry.
- 23:57Speaker 7: That's not enough.
- 23:58Speaker 5: Do you guys put anything.
- 23:59Speaker 8: Another criticism I've seen this morning is Matt Collins being
- 24:02Speaker 8: on the field is basically a run-pass indicator, and when
- 24:05Speaker 8: he's on the field, they're going to run the ball. Obviously,
- 24:07Speaker 8: that changed a little bit down the end when A.J.
- 24:09Speaker 8: Brown went out, but you know, is this offense becoming
- 24:13Speaker 8: too predictable? I mean, it's obvious when Reggie Gilliam's on
- 24:15Speaker 8: the field what's going to happen. I remember the old
- 24:17Speaker 8: days where you'd have James Devlin on the field, they'd
- 24:20Speaker 8: motion him out wide, and all of a sudden Brady's
- 24:21Speaker 8: running Haas-Juke with, you know, five wide with a fullback out, you.
- 24:24Speaker 5: Know, running the hitch.
- 24:25Speaker 8: Like, I just wonder if they're going to, if they're,
- 24:28Speaker 8: too predictable in how they can manufacture more for this
- 24:31Speaker 8: offense because without A.J.
- 24:32Speaker 5: Brown, they're going to have to start to get a
- 24:33Speaker 5: little creative, I think.
- 24:34Speaker 2: That's exactly it, Deuce. Without A.J.
- 24:36Speaker 9: Brown, that kind of takes away your guy that says, okay,
- 24:38Speaker 9: no matter what, we know we can go to this guy.
- 24:40Speaker 2: I mean, you can hit the A.J. Brown button at
- 24:41Speaker 2: any point.
- 24:42Speaker 9: That's the beauty of having a guy like that on
- 24:44Speaker 9: your team, and now you're in a position where, okay,
- 24:46Speaker 9: you're kind of back to last year, but without a guy,
- 24:49Speaker 9: and that's where people who didn't like the Keishon booty
- 24:52Speaker 9: trade are so frustrated, and that's a whole other talking
- 24:54Speaker 9: point that, I'm sure at some point we'll get into
- 24:56Speaker 9: today due to probably callers calling and talking about it,
- 24:58Speaker 9: but that is what is the most concerning part to
- 25:01Speaker 9: me is last night after A.J.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Brown went out.
- 25:05Speaker 9: You didn't see any of this, but it was almost
- 25:07Speaker 9: like it was, guys turn, okay, who's going to make
- 25:09Speaker 9: the play? Other people are like, who's going to make
- 25:10Speaker 9: the play? I don't know if it's, like no one
- 25:12Speaker 9: went out there and just made it, right? You liked
- 25:14Speaker 9: a little bit of what Pop Douglas did last night.
- 25:15Speaker 9: Mack Hollins, you were encouraged by him, but there... Those
- 25:18Speaker 9: aren't necessarily– or Pop Douglas, I shouldn't say. Matt Collins
- 25:20Speaker 9: isn't a big play guy. He's a guy that maybe
- 25:22Speaker 9: on third down, third and medium, third and long, you
- 25:24Speaker 9: can look to, like he made a couple of those
- 25:25Speaker 9: catches last night. But I guess Pop Douglas is now
- 25:28Speaker 9: your most explosive receiver, given how Dobbs looked last night,
- 25:30Speaker 9: at least at this point.
- 25:31Speaker 2: So it's definitely a concern moving forward.
- 25:34Speaker 5: Time to get Chisholm in there.
- 25:36Speaker 8: Legal Seafoods is giving fans a true taste of Boston
- 25:39Speaker 8: this season as the official seafood restaurant of the New
- 25:42Speaker 8: England Patriots.
- 25:43Speaker 5: Pre-game or post-game, get the seafood you love at your
- 25:45Speaker 5: local restaurant today. That's at LegalSeafoods.com. Well, guys, this is
- 25:49Speaker 5: a little early.
- 25:49Speaker 8: To get to the phones, but they are absolutely stacked,
- 25:51Speaker 8: and I'm sure that we've got some people who want
- 25:54Speaker 8: to express some feelings.
- 25:55Speaker 5: So let's start here with Chris in Tampa.
- 25:58Speaker 4: Hey, Chris.
- 26:01Speaker 18: What's going on, guys?
- 26:02Speaker 4: How are you doing?
- 26:03Speaker 14: As good as you can be, I'd assume.
- 26:08Speaker 16: Going off the last night. Can you guys hear me?
- 26:10Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. Sir, we got you, brother.
- 26:11Speaker 19: Okay.
- 26:12Speaker 20: All right.
- 26:13Speaker 16: Just touching on life as a Patriots fan in Tampa.
- 26:16Speaker 16: Shout out all my group chats. It's absolutely brutal, the
- 26:20Speaker 16: beating I'm taking this morning. So that's not fun. As
- 26:23Speaker 16: far as the X's and O's go, COVID last night
- 26:26Speaker 16: touched on it. And the more I slept on it,
- 26:28Speaker 16: the more I kind of agreed with not abandoning the
- 26:32Speaker 16: run game on early downs. I think the McDaniels MO
- 26:35Speaker 16: over the years in the running game is to get
- 26:38Speaker 16: the linebackers first step towards the line of scrimmage. Keep
- 26:41Speaker 16: the pass rush honest. allow intermediate routes to kind of
- 26:45Speaker 16: find the soft spot and the coverage. That doesn't happen
- 26:48Speaker 16: without establishing the run, at least on early downs or
- 26:51Speaker 16: early in the game. And as you said earlier, I
- 26:54Speaker 16: just don't believe this offense is at the level of
- 26:56Speaker 16: operating while predictable. If we're constantly in second and nine,
- 27:00Speaker 16: third and 12, and clear and obvious throwing downs, I
- 27:03Speaker 16: don't see us being very efficient, especially in the A.J.
- 27:06Speaker 13: Brown absence.
- 27:08Speaker 14: And outside of that, that's why I said I maybe
- 27:12Speaker 14: wasn't too upset with just keep pounding the rock. But
- 27:16Speaker 14: eventually you've got to let the kid throw. And I
- 27:18Speaker 14: was saying that often. And then it came to bite.
- 27:22Speaker 16: Us down the stretch. But that was kind of my
- 27:25Speaker 16: takeaway for now.
- 27:27Speaker 5: Thanks, Chris.
- 27:29Speaker 7: To me, it wasn't necessarily the balance that was the problem.
- 27:32Speaker 7: It was the downs.
- 27:33Speaker 21: Yeah.
- 27:34Speaker 3: I would have liked to have seen them switch things
- 27:35Speaker 3: up a little bit. I thought they had more success
- 27:37Speaker 3: throwing the ball when they wanted to throw as opposed
- 27:39Speaker 3: to when they had to throw.
- 27:40Speaker 9: You were calling that the pregame, too, Paul. That was
- 27:43Speaker 9: not just a postgame reaction thing. That was something you
- 27:44Speaker 9: wanted to see before the game even kicked off.
- 27:46Speaker 7: Don't let that front seven dominate the game.
- 27:50Speaker 5: And guess what?
- 27:51Speaker 2: They did.
- 27:52Speaker 5: Wayne's in Pennsylvania.
- 27:53Speaker 4: Hey, Wayne. Wayne.
- 27:57Speaker 22: Wayne.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Wayne.
- 27:59Speaker 7: This is what happens when Deuce is at the control.
- 28:01Speaker 7: None of the callers end up on the line.
- 28:02Speaker 5: I seem to recall people hanging up. All right, we're
- 28:04Speaker 5: moving on.
- 28:05Speaker 8: All right, Christian L.A., we heard from him last night.
- 28:07Speaker 8: Let's see how he's doing this morning. Christian, is the
- 28:10Speaker 8: weather at least nice out there in L.A.
- 28:11Speaker 5: For you?
- 28:12Speaker 23: Yeah, the weather's nice out here in L.A., but that
- 28:14Speaker 23: doesn't matter when you have a performance like.
- 28:17Speaker 18: You did last night.
- 28:18Speaker 23: First off, and I know me and Paul are going
- 28:20Speaker 23: to get into it, but Paul, you are 100% dead wrong.
- 28:23Speaker 23: When you are playing, and this is what you said
- 28:26Speaker 23: last night.
- 28:26Speaker 7: I assume that's the case.
- 28:27Speaker 18: When you are a team leading, give me a second, Paul.
- 28:30Speaker 23: When you are a team leading 10-0 late in the
- 28:33Speaker 23: third quarter against a backup quarterback, you're playing man-to-man, and
- 28:37Speaker 23: you put your best on best. Christian Gonzalez shut Jackson
- 28:41Speaker 23: Smith and Jigba down. There should be no reason to
- 28:44Speaker 23: go into a zone defense against a.
- 28:46Speaker 18: Backup quarterback late in the third quarter leading. So that's
- 28:49Speaker 18: one thing.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Can I stop you real quick? When did I ever
- 28:53Speaker 3: say that they should play zone? Troy Brown was railing
- 28:57Speaker 3: against that the whole postgame show. They need to line
- 29:00Speaker 3: up their best on their best. You're making stuff up again,
- 29:05Speaker 3: like you always do.
- 29:06Speaker 18: No, I'm not, Paul.
- 29:07Speaker 23: I called that out last night, and you go, well,
- 29:09Speaker 23: sometimes it's going to be a zone, and sometimes you
- 29:11Speaker 23: never know.
- 29:12Speaker 18: They've got to play different defenses. What are you talking about?
- 29:14Speaker 24: No.
- 29:15Speaker 18: And then you kept going. But that is a mistake.
- 29:18Speaker 23: No, there is times that you just play man-to-man, especially
- 29:21Speaker 23: against a backup quarterback. Anyway, this team was not prepared.
- 29:25Speaker 23: And they weren't prepared, and I put it on Mike Grable,
- 29:27Speaker 23: because of his lack of focus.
- 29:29Speaker 18: This team should have played at least some of their
- 29:32Speaker 18: top-line players.
- 29:33Speaker 3: There it is. That's the May phone call. Remember the
- 29:36Speaker 3: call in May?
- 29:38Speaker 7: It's all on. We got it.
- 29:39Speaker 18: That's right, Paul.
- 29:40Speaker 7: Yep, I remember.
- 29:41Speaker 18: It's true.
- 29:42Speaker 7: I remember, Agenda Boy.
- 29:44Speaker 18: Right?
- 29:45Speaker 5: I remember.
- 29:46Speaker 18: No, you guys are apologizing.
- 29:48Speaker 23: You want to apologize for things. You want to make
- 29:50Speaker 23: things seem all right.
- 29:51Speaker 4: Guess what?
- 29:51Speaker 18: The team was not prepared, and they weren't focused.
- 29:53Speaker 7: You were right. You were right. I was wrong.
- 29:56Speaker 18: You were right. I was wrong. No, Paul, you want
- 30:00Speaker 18: to make it about it?
- 30:00Speaker 25: Okay, great.
- 30:01Speaker 24: No, you were right.
- 30:02Speaker 7: What do you want me to tell you? You were right.
- 30:03Speaker 18: Make sure about the team.
- 30:04Speaker 23: So to keep going when they weren't prepared and they
- 30:07Speaker 23: were not focused.
- 30:09Speaker 7: Well, they absolutely got outcoached again. There's no question about that.
- 30:13Speaker 7: You were right. You got it. You were right.
- 30:17Speaker 18: Paul, secondly, I was right about the draft. Guess what, guys?
- 30:20Speaker 23: Guess what we could have probably used last night?
- 30:23Speaker 18: A really good pass rusher or a really good linebacker.
- 30:25Speaker 18: But you know what we did.
- 30:26Speaker 23: With our first round pick? Again, because Braver was unfocused.
- 30:29Speaker 23: We got a backup lineman that probably won't play. So,
- 30:33Speaker 23: Give me a break with this, like, you know what?
- 30:35Speaker 18: It's going to be all right. It is not going
- 30:36Speaker 18: to be all right.
- 30:38Speaker 23: We have a team that cannot, cannot stop anything coming
- 30:41Speaker 23: out of the backfield and cannot stop the run going
- 30:43Speaker 23: down the middle. Forget about even going out, bouncing on
- 30:46Speaker 23: the outside.
- 30:47Speaker 18: Guys, we are in trouble, and we are.
- 30:48Speaker 23: In trouble because Mike Rabel was unfocused and blew the draft.
- 30:51Speaker 7: You know what he was wrong about?
- 30:53Speaker 5: Thanks, Christian.
- 30:54Speaker 3: His pregame call when he predicted the Patriots to win
- 30:56Speaker 3: in a blowout. He was wrong about that, but he
- 30:58Speaker 3: didn't bring that up.
- 31:00Speaker 24: Big whoop.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Want to fight about it?
- 31:00Speaker 5: Great energy from Christian, of course, as always. Let's see
- 31:03Speaker 5: what's going on with Chris in Nebraska.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Chris, no!
- 31:06Speaker 7: Another deuce.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Another deuce.
- 31:07Speaker 7: Another deuce.
- 31:08Speaker 5: Christian and Danvers.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Deuce dumped.
- 31:10Speaker 8: This is the other Christian. Not going to let me down.
- 31:12Speaker 8: Christian and Danvers, you're on.
- 31:14Speaker 17: Hey.
- 31:14Speaker 26: Hey, guys.
- 31:15Speaker 5: There we go.
- 31:16Speaker 27: Yeah, what's going on?
- 31:16Speaker 6: Man, that was tough last night. You know, 10-0 on
- 31:21Speaker 6: the road. They're down the starting quarterback. Boy, you've got
- 31:25Speaker 6: to win that game.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Yep.
- 31:28Speaker 6: I think overall, even with Mace's terrible decision there at
- 31:31Speaker 6: the end, I just felt like the whole night, and Paul,
- 31:36Speaker 6: you mentioned it about just running it into the line
- 31:39Speaker 6: on first down, just kept doing it. And Alex, you
- 31:43Speaker 6: mentioned about not even having Kyle Williams in there for
- 31:48Speaker 6: a play or two and just sending him deep. there
- 31:51Speaker 6: is a part of me that just felt like they
- 31:53Speaker 6: weren't ready and they were a little bit rusty from
- 31:56Speaker 6: like an operational standpoint and a game plan standpoint. And
- 31:59Speaker 6: I think it goes back to the not playing in
- 32:01Speaker 6: the preseason a lot of it too.
- 32:04Speaker 7: I didn't see that.
- 32:06Speaker 14: I'm sorry.
- 32:07Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 32:07Speaker 3: I mean, the game plan, I totally agree with you.
- 32:09Speaker 3: I don't think that has anything to do with not
- 32:11Speaker 3: playing in the preseason. I think the game plan was
- 32:13Speaker 3: a problem last night.
- 32:15Speaker 14: Okay.
- 32:16Speaker 2: I do.
- 32:16Speaker 7: I mean, I'm with you, Christian.
- 32:17Speaker 3: I think they ran the ball too often in early
- 32:19Speaker 3: downs and got themselves in bad situations. Kyle Williams played,
- 32:25Speaker 3: I think, 12 plays. I don't think Drake was seeing
- 32:28Speaker 3: the field very well last night. I think there's been more,
- 32:30Speaker 3: you know, just kind of looking at it. I don't
- 32:32Speaker 3: rewatch the All-22 like some other people do. It's not
- 32:35Speaker 3: my thing. But I know a lot of people are
- 32:37Speaker 3: starting to talk about this play and that play where
- 32:40Speaker 3: Demario Douglas has opened down the field and A.J. Brown
- 32:43Speaker 3: was open, and he was looking to run quickly. I
- 32:46Speaker 3: think he was affected by the rush. I think he
- 32:48Speaker 3: remembered what happened in the Super Bowl, and I think
- 32:51Speaker 3: he was affected by it.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Thanks, Christian. I mean, that begs the question, though.
- 32:55Speaker 8: Is this just a Seattle defense thing, or is Drake
- 32:58Speaker 8: May kind of rattled in general right now?
- 33:00Speaker 3: We need to hope it's door number one.
- 33:02Speaker 5: Right. But if he is rattled in general, how do
- 33:05Speaker 5: you get him back on track? What do you do?
- 33:07Speaker 9: It has to be a confidence thing. It has to
- 33:09Speaker 9: probably be by doing it, right? And that'll be a
- 33:11Speaker 9: coaching point. I'm sure there's a cut-up already waiting for
- 33:13Speaker 9: him of situations where he jumped the gun too early
- 33:16Speaker 9: because that internal clock, after what we've seen in the
- 33:18Speaker 9: past couple games going back to last year in the playoffs,
- 33:21Speaker 9: that internal clock is all screwed up.
- 33:22Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 33:23Speaker 9: That thing's buzzing and buzzing and buzzing and feeling pressure
- 33:25Speaker 9: when it's not even there, right? Just because of the
- 33:27Speaker 9: beating he took in those playoff games, the pressure he
- 33:30Speaker 9: was under even last night, and I think you saw
- 33:31Speaker 9: that definitely last night and will be something that to
- 33:35Speaker 9: me is solved by getting the reps and making the
- 33:39Speaker 9: plays and just standing in there in the pocket against
- 33:41Speaker 9: Pittsburgh and building that confidence back up.
- 33:45Speaker 5: How many turnovers did he have against Pittsburgh last year, Paul?
- 33:47Speaker 5: A couple.
- 33:48Speaker 7: Three, I think. Did he have two picks? No. He
- 33:51Speaker 7: had one pick and two fumbles, I think.
- 33:53Speaker 5: Not good. Sean's up in Toronto. Hey, Sean, thanks for
- 33:56Speaker 5: calling in.
- 33:58Speaker 12: Thanks for taking the call. Still trying to collect my
- 34:00Speaker 12: thoughts a little bit after last night.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Uh.
- 34:03Speaker 12: performance but i did land on the fact that in
- 34:05Speaker 12: pittsburgh in a in a bit of danger and that
- 34:07Speaker 12: the perfect bounce back in for us the history we
- 34:09Speaker 12: have against pittsburgh in they're not in their their best
- 34:12Speaker 12: form but looking back on last night in the most
- 34:15Speaker 12: frustrating part is just a repeated mistake that he saw
- 34:18Speaker 12: and whether it was drake may force in the ball
- 34:21Speaker 12: not be in the field well you know pop douglas
- 34:24Speaker 12: catching up catching one rated the fixed instead of falling
- 34:27Speaker 12: forward trying to make a mug make another move in
- 34:30Speaker 12: and get more upfield. That's how we lost the game.
- 34:32Speaker 12: I think it was against Pittsburgh last year. And even Ramondre,
- 34:35Speaker 12: glad that he didn't fumble it, but even early in
- 34:37Speaker 12: the game, the ball popped out at the end of
- 34:39Speaker 12: a couple rushes.
- 34:40Speaker 7: I do remember that one.
- 34:43Speaker 12: Yeah, when it was coming a little loose as he
- 34:44Speaker 12: was going to the ground, and you just kind of
- 34:46Speaker 12: think to yourself, has this team progressed at all? Last
- 34:49Speaker 12: night it didn't look like it, but it's a long season,
- 34:52Speaker 12: and I'm confident they're going to wash it, and then
- 34:53Speaker 12: they've got a good bounce back in against the Steelers.
- 34:55Speaker 12: So go pass, and look forward to listening to you
- 34:57Speaker 12: guys throughout the year.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Thanks, Sean.
- 34:59Speaker 5: Give Christian and L.A. a call and maybe talk some
- 35:01Speaker 5: sense into it.
- 35:02Speaker 9: That's a great point by Sean, though. I can't decide
- 35:03Speaker 9: in my head which is the most disappointing part, the A.J.
- 35:05Speaker 9: Brown injury or that you waited a whole offseason, built
- 35:08Speaker 9: up the hope, told yourself, okay.
- 35:10Speaker 2: This Patriots team, when we see them next, they're going
- 35:12Speaker 2: to be better.
- 35:13Speaker 9: And last night, they just didn't look like they made
- 35:16Speaker 9: any progress, which obviously isn't true. They made progress in
- 35:18Speaker 9: specific areas and other ways, but the overall product as
- 35:20Speaker 9: a whole, if we saw it last night, wasn't better
- 35:22Speaker 9: than what we saw in the Super Bowl.
- 35:23Speaker 8: Especially you've got a gun-shy fan base that I think, yes,
- 35:26Speaker 8: you had a really good few months last year where
- 35:28Speaker 8: he was playing MVP pace and everybody had good vibes
- 35:31Speaker 8: and felt, you know, but there's also been a long
- 35:33Speaker 8: history going back to maybe, you know, sometimes in 2021, uh,
- 35:37Speaker 8: where the offense has been absolutely dreadful and it's more
- 35:40Speaker 8: of the same. And I think that's part of why
- 35:42Speaker 8: fans are kind of triggered is because they're, I've seen
- 35:45Speaker 8: this before. I know this is, this has the making
- 35:48Speaker 8: for a long season. If it continues to look like this,
- 35:50Speaker 8: you know, maybe, maybe Sean's right.
- 35:52Speaker 2: And we can't go back to that place. They're saying, yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 8: Uh, Phone lines just keep lighting up. Everybody, Cam from Bedford. Hey, Cam,
- 35:58Speaker 8: thanks for calling in.
- 36:01Speaker 7: Com?
- 36:03Speaker 5: It's Com Newton. It's a typical dude. I just fired
- 36:06Speaker 5: up like five calls in a row.
- 36:07Speaker 7: Batten 500.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Cam, call back. Batten 500 gets you paid, Paul.
- 36:11Speaker 5: Let's go down to North Carolina, Sabah. What do you got, Sabah?
- 36:16Speaker 22: Oh, my goodness, guys. I was so excited, so excited about,
- 36:19Speaker 22: you know, football starting. And then Drake may happen. First
- 36:23Speaker 22: of all, I told y'all, do not get rid of
- 36:25Speaker 22: Booty and Diggs. He had chemistry with them. Now he's
- 36:28Speaker 22: worried about placing the ball in the perfect spot. He's
- 36:32Speaker 22: worried about sort of praising or not disappointing A.J.
- 36:36Speaker 21: Brown.
- 36:37Speaker 22: No, that's not your job, Drake. Your job is to
- 36:40Speaker 22: play with confidence and with ease and poise. And I
- 36:43Speaker 22: tried to, it seemed like he tried to place the
- 36:46Speaker 22: ball instead of just throwing it. He was inaccurate. His
- 36:49Speaker 22: decision-making was.
- 36:51Speaker 28: Not quite right either.
- 36:52Speaker 22: And I don't like the fact that he doesn't play
- 36:55Speaker 22: in preseason. He is not a seasoned veteran. He looked rusty.
- 36:59Speaker 22: The wide receivers looked rusty. And what is up with
- 37:01Speaker 22: your play calling? It was first down, run up the middle.
- 37:04Speaker 22: First down, run up the middle. The one time I
- 37:07Speaker 22: wanted you guys to actually.
- 37:08Speaker 20: Run the ball was the turnover late.
- 37:10Speaker 22: In the game with 23 seconds to go. That's when
- 37:13Speaker 22: you do run up the middle and kick the field goal.
- 37:15Speaker 22: I don't understand what's going on. And I'm telling you,
- 37:18Speaker 22: this better not be like the beginning of the end
- 37:21Speaker 22: for Drake May. Because I don't like the fact that
- 37:23Speaker 22: the team ruined the chemistry he had with those receivers.
- 37:26Speaker 22: And he acted like it was an upgrade. It is
- 37:28Speaker 22: not an upgrade. And on the pregame interview, I don't
- 37:31Speaker 22: know if you heard him say... He said, with A.J.
- 37:33Speaker 22: Brown's talent, we've never had talent like that adhere to
- 37:35Speaker 22: the wide receiver position. You just insulted Booty and Diggs.
- 37:39Speaker 22: And one last thing. Why does he say Myers Park
- 37:41Speaker 22: High School and not UNC? Buddy, you went to UNC,
- 37:45Speaker 22: and you should be proud of you going to UNC.
- 37:47Speaker 22: I'm very upset. I don't know what to do. I
- 37:49Speaker 22: got all the red-skinned people. Told you, told you, J.D.
- 37:51Speaker 22: 's better.
- 37:51Speaker 21: J.D.
- 37:52Speaker 6: 's better.
- 37:53Speaker 22: I'm so frustrated, guys. I don't know what to do.
- 37:55Speaker 22: And this season's going to be like this. I can't
- 37:57Speaker 22: take anymore.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Thanks, Sabah.
- 37:59Speaker 21: Passion.
- 38:00Speaker 2: We're glad you got.
- 38:02Speaker 7: That off your chest.
- 38:03Speaker 3: If she's right about that not being an upgrade, I
- 38:08Speaker 3: think it's a massive upgrade. I think Brown and Dobbs
- 38:12Speaker 3: are much better than Diggs and Booty. But if she's
- 38:16Speaker 3: right and I'm wrong, she could be right about the
- 38:20Speaker 3: rest of the season. Because I think that's the strength
- 38:22Speaker 3: of the team is... the passing game, and the offense
- 38:25Speaker 3: in general. And if we're going to see more performances
- 38:28Speaker 3: like last night, I'm not talking Drake specifically. I'm not
- 38:32Speaker 3: expecting him to throw multiple interceptions every game. But if
- 38:37Speaker 3: those guys are just okay and they don't really click.
- 38:42Speaker 7: That could be scary.
- 38:43Speaker 2: And that's the thing. A.J.
- 38:44Speaker 9: Brown, there's no question A.J. Brown is he's a top-tier
- 38:46Speaker 9: talent with a wide receiver position in this league. The
- 38:48Speaker 9: Dobbs one is when we talked about it last night
- 38:50Speaker 9: is scary. If he looks like that, then you really
- 38:52Speaker 9: question yourself, especially the digs, you know, the digs position.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Okay.
- 38:56Speaker 9: Not coming, coming to terms with digs and letting him walk.
- 38:59Speaker 9: Obviously there was some other stuff going on there as well.
- 39:01Speaker 9: but that is the one that will have you scratching
- 39:04Speaker 9: your head if Dobbs keeps looking like that.
- 39:05Speaker 5: I mean, Dobbs has been a roller coaster so far.
- 39:07Speaker 8: We've only been with him like two months, but initially
- 39:10Speaker 8: it looked kind of like it looked like last night.
- 39:12Speaker 8: Then he had a stretch where he was their most
- 39:14Speaker 8: consistent receiver on the field. He's making contested catches up
- 39:17Speaker 8: in the air like we saw, similar throws to what
- 39:20Speaker 8: we saw last night, but he's going up and getting
- 39:21Speaker 8: the ball, and now we have a regression. So I
- 39:24Speaker 8: just don't know what this roller coaster is going to
- 39:26Speaker 8: be like. Can he find some consistency? I really thought
- 39:29Speaker 8: he had found it.
- 39:29Speaker 5: But it didn't look like it last night.
- 39:31Speaker 3: And it looked like he had trouble uncovering last night.
- 39:33Speaker 3: They only targeted him three times. And that's even after
- 39:36Speaker 3: Brown left the game. Let's keep the calls going. Darren's
- 39:40Speaker 3: in Michigan.
- 39:40Speaker 5: Hey, Darren.
- 39:42Speaker 13: That is Aaron, but thanks.
- 39:43Speaker 27: Thanks for taking the call.
- 39:46Speaker 6: Aaron. Double thanks.
- 39:47Speaker 4: Yes, thanks.
- 39:48Speaker 18: I was with Paul.
- 39:49Speaker 13: I thought I was going into this game. You know,
- 39:51Speaker 13: I actually played a lottery thinking it was going to
- 39:55Speaker 13: be 31-10. Got a rude awakening.
- 39:57Speaker 7: You weren't with me then.
- 39:58Speaker 13: But my main thing with Drake May is I wish
- 40:02Speaker 13: in practice maybe they could develop a device where he
- 40:05Speaker 13: could only see 12 yards up the field. This should
- 40:08Speaker 13: have been a.
- 40:08Speaker 29: Dink and dunk game.
- 40:09Speaker 13: It should have been a dink and dunk game in
- 40:12Speaker 13: the Super Bowl, and it should have been a.
- 40:13Speaker 29: Dink and dunk game last night.
- 40:16Speaker 17: But.
- 40:17Speaker 13: He was forcing the ball down the field, double coverage,
- 40:21Speaker 13: timing was off, maybe he was rusty, but teach this
- 40:25Speaker 13: man how to dink and dunk, Josh McDaniels. And looking
- 40:29Speaker 13: at Josh McDaniels' body language on the sideline during these
- 40:33Speaker 13: plays tells me he knows something about Drake May that
- 40:36Speaker 13: we don't know.
- 40:37Speaker 3: I mean, I think you're right, but they did dink
- 40:39Speaker 3: and dunk for the first three quarters, and they didn't
- 40:41Speaker 3: move the ball and score.
- 40:42Speaker 7: In those quarters either.
- 40:43Speaker 3: Now, to your point, and I think you're right, when
- 40:46Speaker 3: he stopped thinking of Duncan, he turned it over. I
- 40:48Speaker 3: think they were three for nine with three picks on
- 40:51Speaker 3: passes that traveled 20 yards or more. So that's the
- 40:54Speaker 3: whole ADOT thing that he was so good at last year, right?
- 40:57Speaker 11: Yeah, just one interception on the deep ball.
- 40:59Speaker 7: They just weren't there last night. And it was decisions.
- 41:02Speaker 5: Yeah, it's probably too.
- 41:03Speaker 8: Much, you know, for me to expect in week one
- 41:06Speaker 8: for him to show a significant veteran step forward at
- 41:09Speaker 8: the quarterback position.
- 41:10Speaker 5: But, you know, is this a thing that you have
- 41:13Speaker 5: to work at?
- 41:14Speaker 8: And I don't, you know, we spent so much time
- 41:16Speaker 8: talking about, remember, I mean, you spent like 20 years
- 41:18Speaker 8: that felt like Brady just dinks and dunks, you know,
- 41:20Speaker 8: like that was the narrative you had to battle.
- 41:22Speaker 5: And now it's like, I can't dink and dunk.
- 41:25Speaker 8: So, I mean, I would definitely choose to have a
- 41:26Speaker 8: guy who can throw the ball downfield with accuracy.
- 41:29Speaker 5: But, you know, is this like a maturity thing?
- 41:32Speaker 8: And, you know, and I would just say, like, you
- 41:34Speaker 8: got to be in it for the long ride with
- 41:35Speaker 8: this kid, you know, like he's going to have some
- 41:36Speaker 8: ups and downs. I know right now he's in a trough,
- 41:39Speaker 8: but he's immensely talented and, And I still think the
- 41:41Speaker 8: coaching staff believes in him. That's where I kind of
- 41:43Speaker 8: lose things is that the coaching staff has this underlying
- 41:47Speaker 8: lack of trust in Drake May. I wonder how true
- 41:50Speaker 8: that is because I don't really see that yet. I
- 41:52Speaker 8: think that he gave them plenty of reasons to be confident.
- 41:55Speaker 8: And any time a player goes into a slump, you've
- 41:57Speaker 8: got to find a way to get them out of it.
- 41:58Speaker 2: That's what makes it, I think, even more frustrating for
- 42:00Speaker 2: this fan base.
- 42:00Speaker 9: They were spoiled for 20 years at the best to
- 42:03Speaker 9: ever do it, who knows what's going to happen before
- 42:05Speaker 9: it happens. ball snap decisions made balls out in under
- 42:09Speaker 9: two seconds. I mean, you saw that for so many
- 42:11Speaker 9: years and now you see, you know, I think.
- 42:13Speaker 8: That's, what's part of the frustration is just, you know,
- 42:16Speaker 8: and I, I hate the stuff where you go back
- 42:17Speaker 8: with the screenshots and you circle, like, I think that's
- 42:19Speaker 8: a lot more complicated than that. Um, but I just,
- 42:22Speaker 8: I kind of see it as a maturity issue and
- 42:25Speaker 8: he said it, I got impatient and I think that
- 42:28Speaker 8: spoke volumes to me that, you know, and it's the
- 42:30Speaker 8: same thing we've talked about.
- 42:32Speaker 5: Like he wants to throw the ball down the field.
- 42:34Speaker 8: He wants to play backyard football and, And I can't
- 42:37Speaker 8: fault him for that, but he's going to have to
- 42:38Speaker 8: mature and start getting into the mode where I take
- 42:41Speaker 8: what the defense gives me. I'm not going to get
- 42:43Speaker 8: bored taking the profit, as Josh McDaniels says. And hopefully
- 42:47Speaker 8: then that's going to open up the downfield throws. It
- 42:50Speaker 8: just seems like a lesson he's still trying to learn.
- 42:52Speaker 11: Do you think part of.
- 42:53Speaker 10: It is seeing kind of those live raps and just like,
- 42:56Speaker 10: I don't know, you can prepare as much as possible
- 42:58Speaker 10: to have some of those D linemen running into your face.
- 43:01Speaker 10: But until you're actually doing it, and like, I don't know.
- 43:04Speaker 10: probably too much credence is given to him not playing
- 43:07Speaker 10: in the preseason. But I think like week one, you haven't,
- 43:10Speaker 10: you have PTSD from the Superbowl. You're playing the same team.
- 43:13Speaker 10: That's a scary front. I don't know. I, I can't
- 43:15Speaker 10: even imagine trying to make a decision.
- 43:18Speaker 3: And I don't know what it is to be, you know,
- 43:20Speaker 3: in that situation, what the best way to prepare would be. So,
- 43:24Speaker 3: and I've been sort of critical of like, Oh, play
- 43:26Speaker 3: in the preseason. I feel like it's, there's two wide
- 43:30Speaker 3: gaps between, I agree with Alex. I think if you
- 43:34Speaker 3: want to adequately prepare for facing a rush, you need
- 43:38Speaker 3: to face a rush. I don't think that gets done
- 43:40Speaker 3: in what most teams play their starters in, you know,
- 43:44Speaker 3: 10 or fewer snaps. I don't think you all of
- 43:47Speaker 3: a sudden, okay, now I'm used to seeing a rush.
- 43:50Speaker 3: So if you want to play them for like one
- 43:52Speaker 3: of the preseason games for like over a half, Now
- 43:55Speaker 3: I can hear your argument that we're trying to knock
- 43:58Speaker 3: the rust off and get him used to having bodies
- 44:01Speaker 3: around him and get his timing down. So if everybody's
- 44:05Speaker 3: okay with that, then I'm on board. I'm not on
- 44:08Speaker 3: board with playing a series and playing eight plays and saying, okay, well,
- 44:12Speaker 3: he played in.
- 44:12Speaker 7: The preseason, so he should be all set.
- 44:14Speaker 2: And you made the, sorry, go ahead.
- 44:15Speaker 5: It's also vanilla defenses, too. They're not running all this
- 44:18Speaker 5: crazy crap that McDonald is.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Paul made the point a couple episodes ago is that
- 44:22Speaker 2: football is the only sport.
- 44:23Speaker 9: You can't really practice it.
- 44:25Speaker 2: You know, it's the only sport.
- 44:25Speaker 9: You can't replicate it. Especially the quarterback position. They call
- 44:28Speaker 9: it whizzing off, at least where I come from. You know, sorry, yeah,
- 44:31Speaker 9: Jason Crowe, yeah.
- 44:32Speaker 7: Is it brother-in-law?
- 44:33Speaker 2: Oh, Jason Crowe.
- 44:34Speaker 3: Is it brother-in-law again? You pretend that you're going opposite
- 44:37Speaker 3: your brother-in-law and you just kind of like shadow him?
- 44:39Speaker 2: Yeah, not only that.
- 44:40Speaker 9: Not only that when you get into like scout periods,
- 44:42Speaker 9: but defensive ends. Or if you're getting pressure on the quarterback,
- 44:44Speaker 9: you are taught to just veer off to the side.
- 44:46Speaker 9: You're taught to run by him and, okay, the quarterback,
- 44:49Speaker 9: they love, especially offensive coaches, love to let the quarterback
- 44:52Speaker 9: continue the play in practice.
- 44:54Speaker 2: A D-lineman will run by him. They still want to
- 44:56Speaker 2: see the quarterback make the throw.
- 44:57Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 44:57Speaker 7: You know what I mean?
- 44:58Speaker 2: And that's just not how it works in live tackle football.
- 45:01Speaker 9: And to your guy's point, that's exactly what you saw
- 45:03Speaker 9: some of that last night, and you can't replicate that.
- 45:05Speaker 9: There's no way to replicate that in practice unless you
- 45:08Speaker 9: want your quarterback going live.
- 45:09Speaker 5: Well, we're about 15 minutes away from Mike Vrabel's press conference.
- 45:12Speaker 5: Here's what he has to say.
- 45:13Speaker 7: You people are wound up.
- 45:15Speaker 8: Going through these calls, man, all six lines have been
- 45:17Speaker 8: fired up this whole show.
- 45:19Speaker 5: So let's go to Rashad in Baltimore. Hey, Rashad, thanks
- 45:21Speaker 5: for calling in.
- 45:23Speaker 21: Hey, guys.
- 45:24Speaker 18: How are you all doing?
- 45:25Speaker 14: All right.
- 45:27Speaker 30: All right, well, I got a few gripes, but before
- 45:31Speaker 30: I do that, I got to say, like, Christian Gonzalez, like,
- 45:33Speaker 30: he did his thing.
- 45:34Speaker 18: Like, he did his job. He did what he was
- 45:36Speaker 18: supposed to do.
- 45:38Speaker 30: And I'm not going to lie. Like, the first, like,
- 45:41Speaker 30: part of the game, I'm like, Ramondre had to have
- 45:43Speaker 30: something on somebody because.
- 45:45Speaker 18: He kept getting the ball.
- 45:46Speaker 31: Like, it was, like, run, run, pass.
- 45:47Speaker 30: He would, like, get two runs and a pass. But, like,
- 45:50Speaker 30: at the end of the game, like, he was, like,
- 45:52Speaker 30: one of our better players.
- 45:53Speaker 27: Yeah.
- 45:55Speaker 30: Now, I have to say, Drake May, he played an
- 45:59Speaker 30: awful game. Like, he has to remember this is not
- 46:01Speaker 30: backyard football. You can't just be giving a ball away.
- 46:05Speaker 30: You can't win games like that. And I think the
- 46:08Speaker 30: coaching kind of set him up to dry. Like, I
- 46:10Speaker 30: think the game plan.
- 46:11Speaker 18: Was, like, it was, like, basic.
- 46:13Speaker 30: Like, I'm not going to be, like, you know, because
- 46:17Speaker 30: I know how Patriots fans like the sky be falling, but, like,
- 46:21Speaker 30: That's not a good sign. Like, the offense, it gave me, like,
- 46:24Speaker 30: the pick, the last pick, it gave me, like, Mac
- 46:27Speaker 30: Jones 2023 vibes. Like, it was just, like, it was
- 46:31Speaker 30: not good. But, like, the coaching has to be better,
- 46:35Speaker 30: and the coaching has to be better.
- 46:37Speaker 5: Thanks, Rashad.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I love the Baltimore accent.
- 46:39Speaker 5: Let's try to fire through a couple of these ones.
- 46:41Speaker 5: Deshawn's in Virginia. Hey, Deshawn.
- 46:44Speaker 27: How you guys doing?
- 46:45Speaker 12: Fine.
- 46:46Speaker 10: Fine.
- 46:47Speaker 5: Okay.
- 46:47Speaker 13: Good.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Cheer up, Deuce.
- 46:49Speaker 29: I want to win if people are going to start
- 46:51Speaker 29: calling like you see it, because I think that it's
- 46:53Speaker 29: going to be problematic down the stretch for a long,
- 46:55Speaker 29: long time with Drake May and the coaching, because I
- 46:59Speaker 29: think Drake May has bad tendencies. He doesn't see the
- 47:02Speaker 29: field very well, and he doesn't have a stature of
- 47:05Speaker 29: confidence in his body.
- 47:07Speaker 15: Looking at that game last night, he looked scared. Also,
- 47:11Speaker 15: you can tell by the way they're calling the game, they.
- 47:13Speaker 29: Look scared, because they're pretty much.
- 47:15Speaker 15: Worried about what we basically witnessed in that fourth quarter.
- 47:20Speaker 15: So basically, you actually look at it like there's no
- 47:22Speaker 15: sort of spacing with that offense.
- 47:23Speaker 29: Everything looks hard. Like, nothing comes easy.
- 47:27Speaker 15: And then also, too, you got to factor in that
- 47:29Speaker 15: our defense is okay.
- 47:31Speaker 29: It's good, but it's not great.
- 47:32Speaker 15: See, you see how Seattle is, but despite missing all
- 47:35Speaker 15: those pieces or whatever, they still are able to sustain
- 47:37Speaker 15: greatness on defense because they actually have good depth.
- 47:41Speaker 29: And they draft very well. You see where good drafting
- 47:44Speaker 29: gets you?
- 47:44Speaker 15: See, if we're in that situation, we can't sustain that
- 47:47Speaker 15: level of success because the simple fact is that we're
- 47:50Speaker 15: not deep enough.
- 47:51Speaker 29: That's why they didn't play those guys.
- 47:53Speaker 2: In the preseason.
- 47:54Speaker 15: Because I know deep down they know that this team
- 47:57Speaker 15: is in a dire need for positioning behind what we
- 48:01Speaker 15: already have.
- 48:02Speaker 6: And some of the guys we.
- 48:02Speaker 15: Have started by will be third or second stringers on
- 48:05Speaker 15: most teams. So I think that's the biggest problem most
- 48:09Speaker 15: people are not looking at. The fact is, as a coach,
- 48:12Speaker 15: that's a problem.
- 48:13Speaker 29: And I think that Drake has got these bad tendencies.
- 48:15Speaker 29: I think he's got a replica of Josh Allen's type career,
- 48:18Speaker 29: where he's going to be successful, he's going to be flashy,
- 48:21Speaker 29: he's going to win some games, but he's never going
- 48:22Speaker 29: to sniff that chip because that clutch gene is missing.
- 48:25Speaker 29: Where do I have that clutch gene? I don't see
- 48:27Speaker 29: that in him. I don't think he's ever going to
- 48:28Speaker 29: have it. That's all I wanted to say.
- 48:31Speaker 5: Thanks to Sean. No opportunity last night.
- 48:33Speaker 8: You know what frustrated me as I was thinking about
- 48:36Speaker 8: it was kind of the anti- Super Bowl XLIX with
- 48:40Speaker 8: Patriots making a stupid interception at the end when you
- 48:44Speaker 8: had a chance maybe to tie it.
- 48:45Speaker 5: But there's vaguely some vague similarities there.
- 48:47Speaker 3: I think the Seattle win just in general was eerily
- 48:51Speaker 3: reminiscent of so many Patriots wins of the past, especially
- 48:56Speaker 3: of the second iteration of the dynasty where the other
- 49:01Speaker 3: team seems like they're in control of the game. But
- 49:03Speaker 3: the score's not quite out of reach. Like, when it
- 49:06Speaker 3: was 10-0... But you're giving the nod anyway. And Troy
- 49:08Speaker 3: Brown just kept saying it over and over. Like, they're
- 49:11Speaker 3: in control in the scoreboard, but they're not in control
- 49:13Speaker 3: of this game. And Seattle knows they're not in control
- 49:15Speaker 3: of the game. Seattle knows that they're still in this
- 49:19Speaker 3: game because the Patriots weren't doing anything to put the
- 49:22Speaker 3: game away. They weren't playing well enough to take complete control.
- 49:25Speaker 3: And then all of a sudden it gets to the
- 49:27Speaker 3: point where, okay, Seattle knew, I pretty much have to
- 49:30Speaker 3: score every time I get it now, and I have
- 49:32Speaker 3: to stop them every time they get it.
- 49:34Speaker 7: And they did. How many times did you see the
- 49:35Speaker 7: Patriots do that to somebody?
- 49:37Speaker 2: Great point.
- 49:38Speaker 5: I also see it from the Patriots' perspective.
- 49:40Speaker 8: I felt like a lot of the losses of the
- 49:41Speaker 8: last few years where, you know, especially 22, 23, where
- 49:43Speaker 8: you're like, they just can't get anything going.
- 49:46Speaker 5: And even when it's there for the taking, they can't
- 49:49Speaker 5: take it. Aaron's in Utah.
- 49:51Speaker 2: Hey, Aaron.
- 49:53Speaker 32: Hey, guys. Long time, second time. I'm not going to
- 49:56Speaker 32: crucify the kid. I mean, if you look at his
- 49:59Speaker 32: whole body of work, he's obviously a lot better than that.
- 50:02Speaker 32: This was definitely his worst game ever, I would say.
- 50:06Speaker 32: And if you think back to Josh Allen, which, It's
- 50:09Speaker 32: kind of an archetype for him. He made a lot
- 50:12Speaker 32: of mistakes in his first two years. Drake May hasn't
- 50:15Speaker 32: even had a full slate of games for two full years,
- 50:19Speaker 32: you know? He has a half, and we're into his
- 50:23Speaker 32: third now. But I'm not going to crucify the kid. Obviously,
- 50:27Speaker 32: he said it.
- 50:28Speaker 4: He owned it.
- 50:28Speaker 18: He lost his patience.
- 50:29Speaker 32: He's going to get better.
- 50:30Speaker 29: It's the first game of the year.
- 50:31Speaker 20: We've got 16 more.
- 50:32Speaker 28: As to the.
- 50:36Speaker 32: Efficacy of scripted plays. I know a lot of the
- 50:39Speaker 32: teams start out. Did we start out today with scripted plays?
- 50:43Speaker 32: Did we start the second half with scripted plays? Would
- 50:46Speaker 32: that have been better?
- 50:47Speaker 29: I just want to have.
- 50:48Speaker 32: You guys speak to that, and I'll take it off
- 50:51Speaker 32: the air.
- 50:51Speaker 20: Thank you.
- 50:51Speaker 5: Thanks, Aaron.
- 50:53Speaker 3: I don't have the answer to that. I don't know
- 50:55Speaker 3: how Josh sequences his plays. I don't necessarily think that
- 51:00Speaker 3: we have the first 15 scripted, kind of a team
- 51:03Speaker 3: but i don't know how.
- 51:04Speaker 8: Josh does i talked to troy during the game last
- 51:07Speaker 8: night a little bit about it of josh uh information
- 51:10Speaker 8: gathering early as much as it's about we want to
- 51:12Speaker 8: do xyz they want to yeah put different personnel groups
- 51:15Speaker 8: out there see how they're going to get matched and
- 51:17Speaker 8: then start to work from there but i don't know exactly.
- 51:20Speaker 2: Um I think that's the angle you take, right?
- 51:24Speaker 9: With all this Drake May panic, if you're someone who
- 51:26Speaker 9: believes in Drake May and wants to defend Drake May,
- 51:28Speaker 9: I think that's the path is okay. And this is
- 51:30Speaker 9: a guy who the knock on him coming out was
- 51:31Speaker 9: he hadn't played a lot of football to begin with, right?
- 51:34Speaker 3: And to be honest, I think that's what we've seen
- 51:35Speaker 3: and heard most. I mean, there's no sugarcoating it. He
- 51:38Speaker 3: played a terrible game last night and ultimately probably cost
- 51:42Speaker 3: your team a chance to win. But I think most
- 51:44Speaker 3: people look at it as that's not what Drake May is.
- 51:47Speaker 3: That's not what he has been for this team. It
- 51:49Speaker 3: was his worst game, I think, as a pro. I
- 51:52Speaker 3: don't even remember a game that bad his rookie year
- 51:54Speaker 3: when he was kind of flying by the seat of
- 51:55Speaker 3: his pants.
- 51:56Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. Super Bowl wasn't that bad either.
- 51:57Speaker 24: No.
- 51:58Speaker 8: Mike Vrabel coming up within the next 10 minutes or so.
- 52:01Speaker 8: Jordan's in Tampa, though. Let's start to grab a couple
- 52:03Speaker 8: more calls.
- 52:03Speaker 5: Hey, Jordan.
- 52:06Speaker 20: Yeah, hi, guys.
- 52:07Speaker 31: I was just thinking, watching the game last night, it
- 52:11Speaker 31: just was most frustrating to me about the game is
- 52:15Speaker 31: when it comes to May, I know we've been harping
- 52:18Speaker 31: on it and going back and forth, but it was
- 52:19Speaker 31: really two things. The first one is that just losing
- 52:24Speaker 31: games from... where, you know, we could have got points,
- 52:28Speaker 31: you know, two times. I know there was one from
- 52:31Speaker 31: like the 50 yard line where he threw the pick
- 52:33Speaker 31: to Dobbs, but one more first down and we're in
- 52:37Speaker 31: field goal range. And then obviously the last one there
- 52:40Speaker 31: where clearly field goal range, that's 16 points. And that's
- 52:45Speaker 31: the game right there. And Mike Rabel preaches all the time.
- 52:49Speaker 31: You know, we want to take the ball away and
- 52:50Speaker 31: we don't want to give the ball. So your leader
- 52:53Speaker 31: on offense, is not following the script. So that was
- 52:57Speaker 31: the most concerning thing to me watching that game. Clearly
- 53:00Speaker 31: there's a disconnect there between the message and then what may.
- 53:04Speaker 33: Do it on the field.
- 53:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:06Speaker 29: Yeah.
- 53:06Speaker 7: I would agree with the larger point.
- 53:08Speaker 3: I think it's hard to say they cost themselves three
- 53:11Speaker 3: points when they weren't in field goal range on a
- 53:13Speaker 3: night where they couldn't move the.
- 53:14Speaker 2: Ball at all.
- 53:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:16Speaker 7: The last one is undeniable.
- 53:17Speaker 3: They were at the 16 yard line.
- 53:19Speaker 7: I mean, they're in field goal range. They're in chip shot.
- 53:21Speaker 3: Field goal range, but they needed, as Jordan said, they
- 53:25Speaker 3: needed another first down on a night where they couldn't
- 53:27Speaker 3: get any first downs.
- 53:28Speaker 7: They couldn't move the ball.
- 53:29Speaker 3: They were five for 16 on third downs. So it
- 53:31Speaker 3: would have been third and nine, as I said, if
- 53:34Speaker 3: he had thrown an incomplete pass to Romeo Dobbs there.
- 53:36Speaker 7: They're not in field goal range. That probably would have
- 53:38Speaker 7: ended in a punt.
- 53:39Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 53:40Speaker 8: Part of what hurts to me, too, is just Mike
- 53:42Speaker 8: Vrabel preaches, you know, we hear the words violence a lot.
- 53:44Speaker 8: We hear effort and finish and, you know, personality, you know,
- 53:48Speaker 8: of the team that they want to travel with their identity,
- 53:50Speaker 8: those kind of things, how much he stresses that. And
- 53:52Speaker 8: I just, To see them kind of get out physical
- 53:55Speaker 8: throughout the game, which is like a direct attack of
- 53:57Speaker 8: the identity that you're trying to establish. And, you know,
- 54:00Speaker 8: admittedly against a veteran defensive front, especially on that side
- 54:03Speaker 8: of the ball. But that's just, you know, I got
- 54:06Speaker 8: to see that energy again. I didn't really see that
- 54:07Speaker 8: energy from that team where it feels like they're swarming
- 54:10Speaker 8: to the ball.
- 54:10Speaker 5: They're gang tackling guys. They're trying to punch it out.
- 54:13Speaker 5: You know, I just didn't get a sense of that
- 54:14Speaker 5: identity last night.
- 54:16Speaker 2: I agree. And that is concerning. And you know who
- 54:18Speaker 2: had that? watching the Seahawks, those guys play hard.
- 54:21Speaker 9: Not only do they have the right players, do they
- 54:23Speaker 9: have the right scheme, they're so good on both those categories,
- 54:26Speaker 9: they also just flat.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Out play hard, swarm to the ball, come in like
- 54:30Speaker 2: a bat out of you.
- 54:31Speaker 8: There it is on screen for you, what it should
- 54:33Speaker 8: look like, and it should look like two teams of
- 54:34Speaker 8: that trying to fight through it. Try to get another
- 54:37Speaker 8: one here. William's down in Miami. Hey, William, thanks for
- 54:40Speaker 8: calling in. William, going once. I look like I did
- 54:47Speaker 8: six in a row right. The second one goes wrong.
- 54:49Speaker 8: Paul's like, you can't do it.
- 54:50Speaker 3: Maybe you're batting 600 now. You're up the average a
- 54:53Speaker 3: little bit.
- 54:55Speaker 5: Rhett's down in Tampa. Hey, Rhett.
- 55:00Speaker 3: The Ted Williams of call screeners.
- 55:03Speaker 5: I feel shame.
- 55:04Speaker 8: Patrick in Pennsylvania, please God be there.
- 55:07Speaker 20: Yeah, I'm here.
- 55:08Speaker 18: Did you guys.
- 55:10Speaker 20: Get a chance to see the clip the NFL posted
- 55:13Speaker 20: after the game? I think on Instagram, maybe Twitter. but
- 55:15Speaker 20: they strategically muted the audio, but it's Drew Locke basically
- 55:20Speaker 20: shouting at Drake May for leaving the field without a handshake,
- 55:22Speaker 20: and then like dapping out Morton and Van Rose and DeVito.
- 55:26Speaker 20: But while doing my best lip reading, basically calling Drake
- 55:29Speaker 20: some expletives.
- 55:30Speaker 3: I didn't see that. I did see him with Tommy DeVito.
- 55:34Speaker 3: I assume that they're friendly. I think they were teammates, right,
- 55:37Speaker 3: with the Giants at one point?
- 55:38Speaker 12: Yeah, but.
- 55:40Speaker 20: But right before that, you can kind of see DeVito was, like,
- 55:42Speaker 20: hesitant to dap him up because he was saying some
- 55:45Speaker 20: stuff about Drake.
- 55:46Speaker 7: Oh, I didn't catch that. That's interesting.
- 55:49Speaker 20: We should be worried about, like, Drake's clearly having a
- 55:51Speaker 20: rough stretch here, but being a bad sport isn't something
- 55:54Speaker 20: I saw from him.
- 55:55Speaker 28: And, you know, we all remember the.
- 55:57Speaker 20: Ryan Fitzpatrick and Nick Foles quotes about Brady not respecting
- 55:59Speaker 20: any opposing QB after a loss. But I'm really hoping
- 56:03Speaker 20: this isn't a sign of things to come. I just
- 56:05Speaker 20: want to know if you guys saw it. What's your thoughts?
- 56:08Speaker 7: This is not like me, Alex. I do not generally
- 56:10Speaker 7: miss drama. It's not like me.
- 56:13Speaker 5: No, I don't know. I don't really feel comfortable commenting
- 56:17Speaker 5: on it. I didn't see it.
- 56:18Speaker 8: But, you know, you hope. Look, the kid had a
- 56:20Speaker 8: rough game. I just hope he's going to. continue to
- 56:22Speaker 8: do the right thing.
- 56:23Speaker 9: So I saw that clip of Drew Locke talking with
- 56:26Speaker 9: some swagger and mojo, but if you know anything about
- 56:28Speaker 9: Drew Locke, that's who Drew Locke is.
- 56:29Speaker 7: But if that's why, I don't blame him.
- 56:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with you.
- 56:32Speaker 3: If he felt like he was sort of slighted by
- 56:35Speaker 3: the star quarterback, doesn't come over and shake his hand
- 56:37Speaker 3: after the game.
- 56:37Speaker 2: Well, you just beat.
- 56:38Speaker 3: And I see him with giant, like Van Roten is
- 56:40Speaker 3: another one that he dabbed up. Now, Jake, that's another giant, right?
- 56:43Speaker 17: Yeah, yeah.
- 56:44Speaker 7: So I think Drew Locke has some history with DeVito.
- 56:46Speaker 7: I know DeVito.
- 56:47Speaker 9: I think he did say something to DeVito about your
- 56:49Speaker 9: boy or your boys. I thought he might have been
- 56:50Speaker 9: referring to the Patriots sideline or something, but I don't know.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Go get your boy.
- 56:55Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 56:55Speaker 2: That's interesting.
- 56:56Speaker 8: Needless to say, based on these calls, confidence isn't high,
- 56:58Speaker 8: but confidence is important to have when you're on the road.
- 57:02Speaker 8: With Bridgestone Tires on your car, truck, SUV, or minivan,

- 57:19Speaker 8: solutions for your journey, available now at Sullivan Tire. And
- 57:23Speaker 8: somehow I'm killing the reeds today, and I'm on like
- 57:25Speaker 8: three hours of sleep.
- 57:25Speaker 7: Chef's kiss with that segue into the reed.
- 57:28Speaker 8: All right, Eshaan, we're going to give you one shot here,
- 57:30Speaker 8: but we're waiting on Vrabel, so we might have to
- 57:31Speaker 8: cut you off.
- 57:32Speaker 5: So make it quick. Eshaan, you're on.
- 57:35Speaker 34: Hey, guys.
- 57:36Speaker 26: What's up?
- 57:36Speaker 35: My question was more about Gabe Ackes because I know
- 57:40Speaker 35: Edge has been a position that you guys talked about
- 57:42Speaker 35: on a lot of the shows before the season started
- 57:44Speaker 35: where there's a bit of concern. I thought he played decent,
- 57:47Speaker 35: but I was just wondering on your thoughts there because
- 57:48Speaker 35: I think the offense is hard to evaluate right now
- 57:51Speaker 35: given it's week one, new players, a game by Drake.
- 57:54Speaker 36: So, yeah.
- 57:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:57Speaker 8: I would say I thought there were a couple encouraging moments. Obviously,
- 57:59Speaker 8: you know, the sack continuing to play through the play.
- 58:02Speaker 8: I thought it was a covered sack, and I think
- 58:03Speaker 8: it was, you know, him. Tackle for loss, though, I
- 58:06Speaker 8: thought that was a pretty good play.
- 58:08Speaker 5: Look, he's behind. He's going to have to catch up.
- 58:10Speaker 5: It's a work in progress.
- 58:11Speaker 8: He has got all this energy, and it feels like
- 58:14Speaker 8: it kind of plays him out of the play sometimes.
- 58:16Speaker 8: But I like the motor. I think he's a strong kid.
- 58:19Speaker 8: I think we have to have a little bit of
- 58:20Speaker 8: patience with him. I like that he showed up last night.
- 58:22Speaker 8: It wasn't perfect. It's going to take a little while
- 58:25Speaker 8: with him, but I just like that he shows up.
- 58:26Speaker 8: I've seen plenty of players come in. You never see them.
- 58:29Speaker 8: You never hear from them.
- 58:29Speaker 5: So you make a play, okay, it's enough to keep
- 58:32Speaker 5: me interested.
- 58:33Speaker 9: Paul, I think you and I might agree on this
- 58:34Speaker 9: and tell me if I'm wrong, but the thing that's
- 58:36Speaker 9: concerning about him, it wasn't necessarily him making the play.
- 58:39Speaker 9: The two plays he popped, the sack. A lot of
- 58:41Speaker 9: that had to do with the coverage. He came from
- 58:43Speaker 9: the back end. Drew Locke had just too much time
- 58:46Speaker 9: back there in terms of he couldn't find a guy downfield.
- 58:48Speaker 9: And then the tackle for loss was one of those
- 58:50Speaker 9: situations where he's predetermined slanting inside. He's coming around the guard,
- 58:54Speaker 9: and the guard is going for his outside shoulder of
- 58:57Speaker 9: an aim point. So that just makes for those guys
- 58:59Speaker 9: to just run right by each other. So that just
- 59:00Speaker 9: kind of worked out. And that's football to a sense,
- 59:02Speaker 9: but that's not a play. Obviously, you've got to make
- 59:05Speaker 9: the tackle and finish, but in terms of getting in
- 59:07Speaker 9: the backfield, that's not a play where he just forced
- 59:09Speaker 9: that to happen.
- 59:10Speaker 3: It's not something that you can necessarily rely on I
- 59:12Speaker 3: like the way Mike described it though I do like
- 59:14Speaker 3: his power and I like his motor and I think
- 59:16Speaker 3: those things translate you know we'll see if he can
- 59:18Speaker 3: get a little bit more up to speed still feel
- 59:21Speaker 3: like he's kind of swimming a little bit but I
- 59:23Speaker 3: like the way Mike described his skill set I would
- 59:25Speaker 3: agree with.
- 59:25Speaker 8: It on you know after last night of all the
- 59:27Speaker 8: things you're concerned about it's like You know, I just, again,
- 59:29Speaker 8: Raritan had a touchdown, and you talked about he struggled with,
- 59:32Speaker 8: you know, but these are rookies.
- 59:33Speaker 3: But that's what's going to, I think what happens is
- 59:35Speaker 3: sometimes we do the box score thing, and we're like, oh,
- 59:38Speaker 3: we had one rookie.
- 59:39Speaker 7: Who had a sack.
- 59:39Speaker 3: One rookie who had a sack in his first game,
- 59:42Speaker 3: and then another rookie had a touchdown in his first game.
- 59:44Speaker 7: You're like, whoa.
- 59:45Speaker 12: Yeah, right.
- 59:46Speaker 7: They got very little out of their draft. They got
- 59:48Speaker 7: very little out of their.
- 59:49Speaker 3: Draft class last night, and that's no disrespect to those guys.
- 59:52Speaker 3: I didn't necessarily think.
- 59:53Speaker 7: They were, you know, bad. Okay, we'll go to Mike Grable.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: Grab a seat. There's all these seats up here. I'm joking.
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: I'm joking with you. What do you guys got?
- 1:00:10Speaker 17: Uh, Mike, there was a report today that AJ Brown
- 1:00:14Speaker 17: suffered a high ankle sprain.
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: Is that accurate?
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: And do you have any more details you can share
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: updating his status?
- 1:00:22Speaker 34: No, I don't think that, uh, AJ will be, um,
- 1:00:24Speaker 34: you know, running more tests, but we'll, we'll update you
- 1:00:27Speaker 34: here next week. Um, it wasn't able to finish the
- 1:00:30Speaker 34: game and, uh, You know, we'll continue to evaluate, continue
- 1:00:36Speaker 34: to run tests. But, you know, I don't know if
- 1:00:40Speaker 34: he'll be available going forward here for the next week,
- 1:00:43Speaker 34: but we'll see. And, you know, I know he'll do
- 1:00:46Speaker 34: everything that he can to get back as quickly as possible.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: And once we get the reports, then we'll figure out
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: what the treatment plan is.
- 1:00:54Speaker 37: Beyond that, Mike, was there anything that popped up after
- 1:00:57Speaker 37: the fact in terms of injuries? You don't need to
- 1:00:59Speaker 37: give us another report?
- 1:01:00Speaker 34: No, I don't think that– You know, Morgan was able
- 1:01:05Speaker 34: to return. Hunter was able to return.
- 1:01:07Speaker 15: C.D.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: Was able to return.
- 1:01:10Speaker 34: So just probably some bumps and bruises, but I don't
- 1:01:13Speaker 34: think anything that, you know, would keep anybody out.
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: You know, A.J. 's one we'll have to monitor.
- 1:01:20Speaker 17: Do you still feel that the reps in some of
- 1:01:25Speaker 17: those joint practices were sufficient as opposed to playing guys
- 1:01:29Speaker 17: in the preseason?
- 1:01:31Speaker 9: I do.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: I do, you know.
- 1:01:34Speaker 34: Playing the backups for the Eagles or the Colts for
- 1:01:38Speaker 34: eight plays I don't think was going to prepare us
- 1:01:41Speaker 34: for what we saw last night.
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: I thought we handled the environment. I thought we did.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: I know that the.
- 1:01:49Speaker 34: Execution wasn't good enough, but the line of scrimmage penalties,
- 1:01:55Speaker 34: the operation, those things gave us a chance.
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: Some other things didn't give us a chance.
- 1:02:05Speaker 38: On that last throw, was there a reason that wasn't
- 1:02:08Speaker 38: thrown more quickly by Drake?
- 1:02:13Speaker 34: Everything in the passing game is built on timing, built
- 1:02:17Speaker 34: on protection. Again, if it's not where you want it,
- 1:02:24Speaker 34: the timing of that particular play and protection, you have
- 1:02:31Speaker 34: to throw it away and say, we can't win it
- 1:02:34Speaker 34: on this throw. And, uh, you know, we'll, we'll, Drake
- 1:02:38Speaker 34: will learn from it. We'll all learn from it. And, uh,
- 1:02:42Speaker 34: you know, hopefully we'll be better for it in the end.
- 1:02:44Speaker 38: Just in terms of like the communication mechanics there, would
- 1:02:48Speaker 38: Josh be in his year in that situation?
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: Maybe not right before that play.
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: But before the other season.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: I mean, again, I hear all of it.
- 1:02:55Speaker 34: I hear the conversation. I tell them what we're doing.
- 1:02:58Speaker 34: I tell them, Hey, we're going to go for it,
- 1:02:59Speaker 34: you know, or, Hey, this is four down. And, you know,
- 1:03:02Speaker 34: we picked up two fourth downs on that drive and,
- 1:03:06Speaker 34: You know, it was, you know, if it's there, you know,
- 1:03:10Speaker 34: I mean, obviously we want to try to be aggressive,
- 1:03:15Speaker 34: you know, and then if not, you know, we're not
- 1:03:17Speaker 34: losing any yards and we certainly don't want to give
- 1:03:20Speaker 34: them a chance to make a play.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: So that was the conversation that went in.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: You guys are in field goal time.
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:31Speaker 34: And again, we had talked about this going into the
- 1:03:33Speaker 34: offseason of, you know, when you get into those spots
- 1:03:37Speaker 34: and a field goal ties it, um, you know, we
- 1:03:40Speaker 34: saw some teams around the league, you know, try to
- 1:03:43Speaker 34: try to score and, and, and try to, to, to
- 1:03:46Speaker 34: win the game, uh, in, in that regard. And so
- 1:03:50Speaker 34: that's what we were trying to do. And, uh, you know,
- 1:03:54Speaker 34: we didn't execute it.
- 1:03:56Speaker 5: After watching the film, how would you assess games play?
- 1:03:59Speaker 34: Well, I thought it was, uh, continues to improve. I
- 1:04:02Speaker 34: thought that, uh, He was active. I thought he set
- 1:04:06Speaker 34: some good edges in the run game. It was good
- 1:04:08Speaker 34: to see him make a nice play and a tackle
- 1:04:11Speaker 34: for loss.
- 1:04:12Speaker 4: I thought probably his.
- 1:04:13Speaker 34: Most instinctive play since he's been here was the unbalanced
- 1:04:18Speaker 34: play in the red zone. They went with a speed
- 1:04:20Speaker 34: break and a tackle over a little bunch into the boundary.
- 1:04:24Speaker 34: They tried to block down on him and he just
- 1:04:29Speaker 34: kind of reacted, crossed the guy's face and.
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: Was able to make a tackle for Just a few
- 1:04:33Speaker 4: yard gain.
- 1:04:34Speaker 34: So I think that was probably the play that I
- 1:04:38Speaker 34: was most just pleased with and said, hey, this is
- 1:04:41Speaker 34: kind of, you know, you're just out there playing.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: You're getting lined up. You're reacting.
- 1:04:44Speaker 34: The guy blocks down on you and, you know, you
- 1:04:47Speaker 34: cross his face and, you know, go make the tackle.
- 1:04:49Speaker 34: So some good things, some things that we'll have to
- 1:04:52Speaker 34: coach and correct and, you know, fix on special teams. But,
- 1:04:56Speaker 34: you know, I thought that it was, you know, an improvement.
- 1:05:00Speaker 17: Mike, where Drake said it was a lack of patience
- 1:05:02Speaker 17: on that last throw, and I saw Romeo said he
- 1:05:06Speaker 17: wasn't locked in enough on the football. How do you
- 1:05:08Speaker 17: go about improving intangible things like that, decision-making with guys?
- 1:05:15Speaker 34: Well, I don't think Rome's was a decision. I think
- 1:05:17Speaker 34: his decision and his route and everything was over there.
- 1:05:19Speaker 34: It just, you know, we dropped the ball. That's what
- 1:05:22Speaker 34: happens in this league. Sometimes guys drop the ball. Sometimes guys,
- 1:05:25Speaker 34: you know, miss tackles and, you know.
- 1:05:29Speaker 4: Try to improve our focus.
- 1:05:32Speaker 34: Decision-making, and again, when you're the quarterback or you have
- 1:05:35Speaker 34: the ball in your hand, I think those things just
- 1:05:38Speaker 34: get magnified. Those decisions and the timings and all those
- 1:05:43Speaker 34: other things. We've seen Drake perform at an extremely high level,
- 1:05:48Speaker 34: and I anticipate him continuing to do that and doing
- 1:05:51Speaker 34: that as we move forward.
- 1:05:53Speaker 37: Mike, there were a lot of early down running plays
- 1:05:56Speaker 37: that didn't go anywhere. I'm curious the conversation on the sideline.
- 1:06:00Speaker 37: I know you can't, you're not going to abandon the run.
- 1:06:01Speaker 37: I mean, we went back to this in the opener
- 1:06:03Speaker 37: last year against the Raiders, you know, just kind of
- 1:06:05Speaker 37: throwing away the run in the second half. You didn't
- 1:06:07Speaker 37: want to do that again. What were the conversations on
- 1:06:10Speaker 37: the sidelines about, Hey, maybe we should open it up
- 1:06:13Speaker 37: a little bit more. Maybe we should think about more
- 1:06:15Speaker 37: quick passes here instead of running into a brick wall
- 1:06:18Speaker 37: over and over.
- 1:06:18Speaker 34: Well, I mean, I think that there's always those conversations
- 1:06:22Speaker 34: and I think that when there's not, not success or
- 1:06:25Speaker 34: is it one guy that we like to play, Was
- 1:06:28Speaker 34: there a better cut? There's all these different conversations that happen.
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: I think you saw us hit some runs.
- 1:06:36Speaker 34: I thought we ran the ball better in the second half. Again,
- 1:06:42Speaker 34: it wasn't good enough, but I think the ability to
- 1:06:46Speaker 34: be able to do that and have some of those
- 1:06:49Speaker 34: runs gives us an opportunity to protect the guys up
- 1:06:54Speaker 34: front so it doesn't become a drop-back passing game, which
- 1:06:57Speaker 34: I felt like we did protect.
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: Better, and I thought there was a lot of strides
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: in that regard. Not perfect, but I thought.
- 1:07:06Speaker 34: That we were able to at least create some pockets
- 1:07:16Speaker 34: to give us a chance to throw from, and then
- 1:07:18Speaker 34: there's times where we have to be better and we
- 1:07:20Speaker 34: have to pick up pressure or pick up a game
- 1:07:22Speaker 34: and not get picked.
- 1:07:25Speaker 38: How do you guys, um, make sure it doesn't become
- 1:07:29Speaker 38: a pattern and spill into the next week?
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: Well, ball security is critical.
- 1:07:35Speaker 34: Um, you know, we do it when, you know, we
- 1:07:39Speaker 34: have periods designed for it each and every day, uh,
- 1:07:42Speaker 34: in practice. Um, you know, is it, is it, uh,
- 1:07:48Speaker 34: ball security? Is it a receiver or running back? You know,
- 1:07:52Speaker 34: We talk about protecting the ball and the guy that
- 1:07:55Speaker 34: has it. Try to make sure that everybody understands their
- 1:07:59Speaker 34: role in ball security because an alignment is like, well,
- 1:08:02Speaker 34: I don't carry the football, but their role is to
- 1:08:06Speaker 34: be able to chase the ball or to protect the
- 1:08:09Speaker 34: quarterback so that makes their job easier. Then if you're
- 1:08:12Speaker 34: talking about the quarterback, it's putting the ball in the
- 1:08:15Speaker 34: right spots and being decisive with the football and maybe
- 1:08:20Speaker 34: not staring something down or whatever those things are and
- 1:08:22Speaker 34: not putting it in harm's way.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: So you practice.
- 1:08:26Speaker 34: That's the only way that we know how to fix
- 1:08:28Speaker 34: things is to understand that, like I said last night,
- 1:08:35Speaker 34: we want to stay aggressive. You have to make plays
- 1:08:38Speaker 34: in this league in order to win, but you also
- 1:08:43Speaker 34: can't be a negative one in the hopes of making
- 1:08:47Speaker 34: a positive play.
- 1:08:49Speaker 38: You ever feel like there has to be a level
- 1:08:51Speaker 38: of acceptance on your end with some of the reckless
- 1:08:55Speaker 38: quote unquote plays from Drake, just because he has that
- 1:08:58Speaker 38: playmaking mindset. And if you try to limit those, you
- 1:09:01Speaker 38: might not get the high end plays that he gives you.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: On the opposite end of the spectrum.
- 1:09:05Speaker 34: I mean, I don't, you know, I think that there's,
- 1:09:10Speaker 34: there's a fine line, you know what I mean?
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: It's like a pass rusher. You come under and you
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: get a sack.
- 1:09:15Speaker 34: If you come under and the quarterback rolls out to
- 1:09:17Speaker 34: the right and, that was a 40 yard pass. So,
- 1:09:21Speaker 34: you know, there's, there's one guy with, with the ball
- 1:09:24Speaker 34: and he gets to make the decisions and we trust Drake, uh,
- 1:09:27Speaker 34: to do that. So I wouldn't say that, you know,
- 1:09:31Speaker 34: that we should allow reckless play, you know what I mean?
- 1:09:35Speaker 34: Cause then it's just scattered and guys are in different
- 1:09:38Speaker 34: gaps or, you know, guys do whatever they want. There's
- 1:09:42Speaker 34: a scheme to the play and then the players have to,
- 1:09:44Speaker 34: you know, we talk about bringing the picture to life and, uh,
- 1:09:50Speaker 34: we've done that a lot and we'll continue to do it,
- 1:09:51Speaker 34: but I think he knows the difference. And I think
- 1:09:55Speaker 34: most of our players know the difference between, you know,
- 1:09:58Speaker 34: when they can.
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: Be aggressive and, uh, and when they have to be smart.
- 1:10:04Speaker 25: Corey had to get involved with the offense without Travion
- 1:10:06Speaker 25: having just been here for a few weeks. What did
- 1:10:08Speaker 25: you make of his performance and just how he's, uh,
- 1:10:11Speaker 25: gotten into, into the offense mentally in a short time here?
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: Yeah, he's done a good job.
- 1:10:15Speaker 34: He's worked hard to try to, uh, acclimate himself to
- 1:10:19Speaker 34: the protections and the terminology. We have to be able
- 1:10:25Speaker 34: to give him some opportunities to run. He had a
- 1:10:28Speaker 34: couple decent runs in there and a couple ones that
- 1:10:31Speaker 34: we have to block better. Again, he's worked hard. He's
- 1:10:35Speaker 34: a great kid. He wants to do a good job.
- 1:10:39Speaker 34: He wants to know more of the offense and learn
- 1:10:42Speaker 34: more of the offense.
- 1:10:44Speaker 17: With the jsn touchdown how much do you attribute that
- 1:10:47Speaker 17: to his abilities versus um missed tackles or shortcomings on
- 1:10:52Speaker 17: your defense's side.
- 1:10:53Speaker 34: Well we're you know we're loaded up there to stop
- 1:10:55Speaker 34: you know the run on fourth and one and then
- 1:10:57Speaker 34: you know if they again throw it we we're okay
- 1:11:00Speaker 34: with a six yard gain and a first down we
- 1:11:02Speaker 34: can play defense again and so you know we have
- 1:11:05Speaker 34: to be able to get them on the ground you
- 1:11:06Speaker 34: know that's x plays are because of missed tackles or
- 1:11:10Speaker 34: poor communication sometimes both so We didn't make him earn it.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: The first down is fine.
- 1:11:17Speaker 34: It's the X play that hurts you.
- 1:11:20Speaker 37: At the end of the third quarter, the punt return
- 1:11:23Speaker 37: from Marcus, the kick was short.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: Would he, could he, should have caught that ball?
- 1:11:29Speaker 34: Again, we trust Marcus like we trust all the other
- 1:11:31Speaker 34: players to make a decision. I think we've all seen
- 1:11:36Speaker 34: what Marcus can do. They hit the banana.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: He had been.
- 1:11:42Speaker 34: Hooking them and hitting them over there. And so then again,
- 1:11:46Speaker 34: Dixon's a fantastic punter.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: I mean, he's a weapon for them.
- 1:11:48Speaker 34: And, you know, we want to get Marcus going and
- 1:11:51Speaker 34: figure out ways to do that. And so that's been
- 1:11:53Speaker 34: a strength of ours and it has to continue to
- 1:11:55Speaker 34: be a strength. But Marcus knows that he's going to
- 1:12:00Speaker 34: get to every football that he can. And the ones
- 1:12:01Speaker 34: that he doesn't, I figure that I'm going to trust
- 1:12:04Speaker 34: him that, you know, he's making a good decision.
- 1:12:08Speaker 38: Just curious, end of the first half, Why run into
- 1:12:14Speaker 38: the locker room there? It looked like maybe they were
- 1:12:15Speaker 38: kind of, I think it was fourth and two. It
- 1:12:17Speaker 38: was like maybe 10 seconds left. You guys could have
- 1:12:18Speaker 38: called timeout. Maybe forced, you know, give Marcus a chance
- 1:12:22Speaker 38: to make a play on a return. Why opt to
- 1:12:24Speaker 38: go in the locker room?
- 1:12:25Speaker 34: Yeah, just wanted to get into the locker room and
- 1:12:27Speaker 34: kind of go from there and regroup.
- 1:12:31Speaker 38: I remember you saying last year, I think it was
- 1:12:34Speaker 38: you guys were in Buffalo, and you said something to
- 1:12:36Speaker 38: the effect of, you know, we wanted to go. It
- 1:12:39Speaker 38: was important to the players you thought. to go into
- 1:12:41Speaker 38: the locker room with a lead, but similar thought process.
- 1:12:46Speaker 34: I mean, again, no, it was just that, uh, you know,
- 1:12:49Speaker 34: we want to make sure that, uh, you know, everybody's
- 1:12:52Speaker 34: on the same page that our guys are locked.
- 1:12:54Speaker 4: In and, um, focused.
- 1:12:57Speaker 34: And the second half, you know, it was probably the,
- 1:13:00Speaker 34: you know, the biggest disappointment. I thought we, you know,
- 1:13:04Speaker 34: we did enough early in the game to give ourselves
- 1:13:08Speaker 34: a chance. It wasn't, wasn't good enough, but it was,
- 1:13:11Speaker 34: no negative plays, no penalties, no turnovers. And, you know,
- 1:13:18Speaker 34: you just try to make it, you know, you have
- 1:13:21Speaker 34: to be able to learn from these experiences that, you know,
- 1:13:24Speaker 34: they're going to be doing things in the second half
- 1:13:26Speaker 34: or they're going to play better or they're going to recognize. And,
- 1:13:28Speaker 34: you know, we weren't able to match some of their
- 1:13:31Speaker 34: performances in the second half. And so we'll focus on that. But,
- 1:13:35Speaker 34: you know, there's a lot of good things. It's the good,
- 1:13:37Speaker 34: the bad, and the stuff that gets us beat. And,
- 1:13:40Speaker 34: This game had all of those. We'll regroup, and we'll
- 1:13:45Speaker 34: try to eliminate the things that get us beat.
- 1:13:47Speaker 4: Appreciate it, guys.

- 1:17:44Speaker 8: All right, guys, it's time for the co-pilot question of
- 1:17:47Speaker 8: the week presented by Microsoft Co-Pilot, where every day is
- 1:17:49Speaker 8: game day and where every decision is powered by insight
- 1:17:52Speaker 8: and innovation. Microsoft technology helps to make decisions faster, insights sharper,
- 1:17:56Speaker 8: and strategies more adaptive and Since we have to figure
- 1:17:59Speaker 8: this out a couple days earlier, I was like, well,
- 1:18:01Speaker 8: it's going to be hard to know what to ask
- 1:18:02Speaker 8: Microsoft Copilot about this game because we didn't know it
- 1:18:05Speaker 8: was going to be, I think it was my words,
- 1:18:07Speaker 8: a dumpster fire. So we just had Copilot pick the
- 1:18:11Speaker 8: games this week. Straight up, no spread or anything like that.
- 1:18:13Speaker 8: So I'm going to run down, and we have video, too,
- 1:18:15Speaker 8: of Copilot's picks if you want to base it on that.
- 1:18:17Speaker 8: So maybe we'll line them up against our own picks,
- 1:18:19Speaker 8: and hopefully I could at least beat Copilot.
- 1:18:21Speaker 5: In these picks.
- 1:18:22Speaker 8: But a lot of them are similar to my picks, Paul.
- 1:18:24Speaker 8: I'm going to run down them real quick. San Francisco
- 1:18:26Speaker 8: versus the Rams. Copilot's got the Rams.
- 1:18:28Speaker 5: I think most of us took the Rams. Atlanta at Pittsburgh.
- 1:18:32Speaker 5: Scott Pittsburgh. I took Pittsburgh. Baltimore at Indianapolis. Took Baltimore.
- 1:18:36Speaker 5: I took Baltimore. Buffalo at Houston. Took Buffalo. You like
- 1:18:39Speaker 5: Josh Allen. Chicago at Carolina. Chicago. That's a good one.
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: Cleveland at Jacksonville. Jacksonville. I think everybody's on Jacksonville this week.
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: Tampa Bay at Cincinnati.
- 1:18:51Speaker 8: Now, this is one where Copilot and I disagreed, but
- 1:18:53Speaker 8: I think, Paul, you were on Cincinnati, weren't you?
- 1:18:55Speaker 5: I was on Tampa Bay.
- 1:18:57Speaker 7: Yeah, I think I picked Cincinnati on that one. One
- 1:19:00Speaker 7: of these years they have to win an early season game.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: Start fast. New Orleans at Detroit. They're going with Detroit.
- 1:19:06Speaker 5: Jets at Tennessee. They're going with Tennessee. Copilot's got Tennessee.
- 1:19:10Speaker 5: Arizona at the Chargers.
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: Chargers.
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: A good one. Jacoby Brissett.
- 1:19:14Speaker 7: A lot of people are really high on the Chargers
- 1:19:16Speaker 7: this year. Mike McDaniel.
- 1:19:18Speaker 28: Yeah.
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: I'm not.
- 1:19:19Speaker 5: I can't. I just don't.
- 1:19:20Speaker 7: I'm not.
- 1:19:21Speaker 5: I'm billing Madison Beer.
- 1:19:23Speaker 7: I don't care for them.
- 1:19:24Speaker 5: She's just going to take that franchise.
- 1:19:26Speaker 8: I would say they're going to take it down, but
- 1:19:27Speaker 8: they haven't won a playoff game since, like, the 1900s,
- 1:19:29Speaker 8: so I don't know.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: Keep them where they're at.
- 1:19:33Speaker 4: 1900s.
- 1:19:33Speaker 5: Let's keep it going, though. Green Bay, Minnesota. Copilot's got
- 1:19:35Speaker 5: Green Bay. I had Green Bay. Miami at Vegas. Copilot
- 1:19:38Speaker 5: takes Miami. with the upset. So that's one, if you
- 1:19:41Speaker 5: trust AI, go with that one. Washington and Philly.
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: Philly.
- 1:19:46Speaker 5: Dallas at Giants.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: Dallas.
- 1:19:47Speaker 5: And finally, Denver, Kansas City. Maybe the game of the week.
- 1:19:50Speaker 5: Is that saying too much? Buffalo, Texans.
- 1:19:54Speaker 7: I think there's some good games. Denver, Kansas City. I
- 1:19:57Speaker 7: think last night was certainly, you know, Patriots. You have
- 1:20:00Speaker 7: Super Bowl rematch. Buffalo, Houston. There's some good games.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:07Speaker 5: There's Copilot's picks.
- 1:20:08Speaker 8: And of course, great emails get to those, but we
- 1:20:11Speaker 8: got to get back to these phone lines because like.
- 1:20:13Speaker 5: Can I do a quick.
- 1:20:14Speaker 11: Interjection related to the picks?
- 1:20:16Speaker 10: We've gotten some emails asking if Boston cream is going
- 1:20:20Speaker 10: to once again, run the fan picks. Oh, well, if
- 1:20:25Speaker 10: you're listening, call in, we'll give you phone line priority
- 1:20:28Speaker 10: here since they're stocked.
- 1:20:30Speaker 11: But yeah, the people want to know if you're going
- 1:20:32Speaker 11: to do this again.
- 1:20:32Speaker 5: It's a lot of fun.
- 1:20:33Speaker 8: A lot of work keeping that all up. Uh, But
- 1:20:35Speaker 8: I got to say, I'm having like, you know, usually
- 1:20:37Speaker 8: I have one of those to-do lists. I think you
- 1:20:38Speaker 8: got a to-do list, Alex. And I like checking things off.
- 1:20:40Speaker 8: And like this phone line has been like a to-do
- 1:20:42Speaker 8: list that like.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: Never ends.
- 1:20:43Speaker 8: You get somebody off and then somebody calls right back in.
- 1:20:45Speaker 8: So let's jump back to the phones.
- 1:20:48Speaker 5: Start off with Steve in New York.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: A little more sober today.
- 1:20:51Speaker 12: Hey, Steve.
- 1:20:53Speaker 18: You guys hear me?
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:20:56Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:20:56Speaker 14: Yes, Jack.
- 1:20:57Speaker 28: I'm a little more sober today. I feel better.
- 1:20:59Speaker 13: I'm recovering.
- 1:21:00Speaker 5: Was it you that was complimenting Paul on his?
- 1:21:03Speaker 26: Yes, that was me.
- 1:21:05Speaker 5: Do you want to take anything back?
- 1:21:06Speaker 8: Are you going to stand by what you said last night?
- 1:21:07Speaker 28: Oh, no, I stand by everything I said about Paul.
- 1:21:10Speaker 11: Drunk thoughts or sober thoughts?
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: Drunk words or sober thoughts?
- 1:21:17Speaker 21: Yeah.
- 1:21:18Speaker 28: Whatever I said about Paul, I feel strongly about. Talking
- 1:21:23Speaker 28: about the game, I mean, I don't want to sound
- 1:21:26Speaker 28: like the sky is falling type of fan, but after
- 1:21:29Speaker 28: a week one loss like that, I think it can
- 1:21:32Speaker 28: affect his team moving forward. You lost a guy who
- 1:21:36Speaker 28: was supposed to be your new offensive addition. They had
- 1:21:39Speaker 28: no snaps in the preseason together. So it's like they're
- 1:21:43Speaker 28: supposed to be learning on the job as the weeks
- 1:21:44Speaker 28: go on, and now AJ's going to be probably out, what,
- 1:21:47Speaker 28: two or three, maybe four weeks.
- 1:21:49Speaker 33: That's not good.
- 1:21:51Speaker 18: You got Dobbs' confidence.
- 1:21:52Speaker 28: I don't know where it's at. I mean, I'm sure
- 1:21:54Speaker 28: you guys heard it, but he said something like he
- 1:21:56Speaker 28: wasn't locked in.
- 1:21:58Speaker 33: How does that happen in week one?
- 1:22:00Speaker 18: Like I said, I'm the– more of.
- 1:22:03Speaker 33: A defend the wall type of fan.
- 1:22:04Speaker 28: But I mean, I know the Felger and the Mads
- 1:22:06Speaker 28: of the world are going to be saying, well, see,
- 1:22:08Speaker 28: this is what happens when your coach is distracted during
- 1:22:10Speaker 28: the off season and all this kind of stuff.
- 1:22:12Speaker 27: So I hope the team.
- 1:22:13Speaker 7: That's a Christian and LA take. Don't blame Felger and
- 1:22:16Speaker 7: Mads for that.
- 1:22:18Speaker 18: No, I know, but you know.
- 1:22:19Speaker 27: Those, you're going to be hearing from those.
- 1:22:22Speaker 5: People after what happened last night.
- 1:22:25Speaker 28: So I hope that the team is strong, well enough to, to,
- 1:22:29Speaker 28: to move past it.
- 1:22:30Speaker 27: But yeah, I mean, it's just a.
- 1:22:32Speaker 26: We all know.
- 1:22:33Speaker 28: I'm sure people have said it today, but just horrific loss.
- 1:22:37Speaker 28: And it's going to affect the team moving forward. I
- 1:22:40Speaker 28: hope they can limit it, but I don't know. We'll see.
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: Thanks, Steve. Appreciate it.
- 1:22:44Speaker 8: I just, like, I get caught up, though, of, like,
- 1:22:46Speaker 8: they lost last year, week one. They beat Cincinnati week one.
- 1:22:49Speaker 8: We thought, oh, it's going to be great.
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: You know, I just... I get it.
- 1:22:53Speaker 7: But you didn't think it was going to be great
- 1:22:54Speaker 7: after the Cincinnati game.
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: Well, I know. You didn't.
- 1:22:57Speaker 7: I know you didn't.
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: No, no, I know. We had a conversation.
- 1:22:59Speaker 5: This was terrible.
- 1:23:00Speaker 7: This is not sustainable.
- 1:23:02Speaker 5: I was so naive. I was like jumping up and down.
- 1:23:04Speaker 5: Even when you stink and you play the right game,
- 1:23:06Speaker 5: you can get a win. And, you know, so I
- 1:23:08Speaker 5: just like I get it. And I'm pissed, too. Like
- 1:23:10Speaker 5: it did not look good.
- 1:23:11Speaker 8: I wanted I was expecting something much better than what
- 1:23:14Speaker 8: we saw.
- 1:23:15Speaker 5: But again, it's week one, and you.
- 1:23:17Speaker 8: Need to have a little bit of like, I'm not
- 1:23:18Speaker 8: going to quite jump off the bridge, trade Drake May,
- 1:23:21Speaker 8: and go back into a cocoon for the next seven years,
- 1:23:23Speaker 8: thinking like, oh, they're never going back.
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: That's the thing.
- 1:23:25Speaker 10: The first three weeks last season, we were in a
- 1:23:28Speaker 10: total limbo of not knowing really what was going to happen.
- 1:23:31Speaker 7: The difference is you didn't know you were good yet. Yeah.
- 1:23:35Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:23:35Speaker 7: And that's why I think it felt so much worse
- 1:23:38Speaker 7: last year.
- 1:23:38Speaker 11: Now we know what they're capable of.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Now you have these expectations, and you kind of hoped
- 1:23:43Speaker 3: that your quarterback was beyond this. And just I'm struck
- 1:23:48Speaker 3: by how eerily similar those two games looked, the Super
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: Bowl and last night.
- 1:23:52Speaker 9: Two points, I think, on that. It goes back to
- 1:23:55Speaker 9: last year. This isn't just a week one isolated. You
- 1:23:57Speaker 9: played the same team that kicked your butt in the
- 1:23:59Speaker 9: Super Bowl last year. I think that's where a lot
- 1:24:00Speaker 9: of this frustration and feeling comes from. And the other
- 1:24:03Speaker 9: thing about the bar being set high, Deuce, we talked
- 1:24:04Speaker 9: about it yesterday, Mike Vrabel was brought in to rebuild
- 1:24:07Speaker 9: this organization, right? Essentially from the ground up with his
- 1:24:10Speaker 9: franchise quarterback at least in place, the bar was set
- 1:24:14Speaker 9: the highest it could possibly be in year one, which
- 1:24:17Speaker 9: sets kind of the runway up for failure.
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: You already took it to the top.
- 1:24:20Speaker 8: Yeah, that's a good point. I feel bad for this guy, Anthony,
- 1:24:25Speaker 8: in Seattle. I know he was there last night. You
- 1:24:27Speaker 8: made it out, Anthony?
- 1:24:29Speaker 26: Yeah, I made it out all right in one piece.
- 1:24:31Speaker 26: My voice is a little bit of my voice. I
- 1:24:32Speaker 26: left it at the stadium. But, hey, what's up, Deuce, Paul, Jack,
- 1:24:37Speaker 26: and Alex? Thank you for your time.
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: This is a new bit, Anthony.
- 1:24:42Speaker 5: You didn't hear that. I'm here. You're welcome.
- 1:24:46Speaker 26: I think whenever I catch you on the show, that's
- 1:24:47Speaker 26: going to be my thing. You're not always there. Listen,
- 1:24:52Speaker 26: just the holy overreaction. I mean, I think that's going
- 1:24:57Speaker 26: to be like... That's the new annual tradition is the
- 1:25:00Speaker 26: week one overreactions, especially on the primetime game. You know,
- 1:25:04Speaker 26: sky is falling. I'm not going to excuse Drake's three interceptions,
- 1:25:09Speaker 26: especially the last one, you know, being the most egregious.
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: But, I mean.
- 1:25:15Speaker 26: I never expected. And I, and I've been consistent with this.
- 1:25:18Speaker 26: I never expected to win this game. I would never
- 1:25:20Speaker 26: expect the visitor on banner night to win the game,
- 1:25:23Speaker 26: the 17 and four record. I couldn't ignore it. It's
- 1:25:26Speaker 26: 18 and four. Now there's just something about that game.
- 1:25:29Speaker 26: And I, I didn't want to be the visiting team
- 1:25:31Speaker 26: on banner night. Even when Darnell went down, even when
- 1:25:35Speaker 26: we were up to, and I just, you know, it's just,
- 1:25:37Speaker 26: it's just one of those nights, but I'm re-watching the
- 1:25:40Speaker 26: game right now on TV, which I said I wanted
- 1:25:42Speaker 26: to do as long as we didn't get blown out,
- 1:25:44Speaker 26: just to kind of see, because that's the best viewing
- 1:25:47Speaker 26: experience is on TV. And I'm just confirming what I
- 1:25:50Speaker 26: thought I saw. Our offensive line, I haven't got to
- 1:25:52Speaker 26: the second half yet, but I think overall I thought
- 1:25:55Speaker 26: they were much better, and I'm confirming that right now
- 1:25:57Speaker 26: on the TV. And then, you know, the biggest thing, obviously,
- 1:26:02Speaker 26: is A.J.
- 1:26:02Speaker 28: Brown.
- 1:26:03Speaker 26: Sounds like a high ankle. I thought in person it
- 1:26:06Speaker 26: looked worse how quickly he grabbed it. I thought it
- 1:26:08Speaker 26: was an Achilles. But, you know, high ankle means that
- 1:26:11Speaker 26: he's going to miss some time, but we'll get him back.
- 1:26:15Speaker 26: But if our offensive line is better, which they look
- 1:26:17Speaker 26: like they're pretty good, that's going to take us far. And,
- 1:26:21Speaker 26: you know, week one to week two, it's always like night.
- 1:26:24Speaker 26: It's always like. You never know what you're going to
- 1:26:26Speaker 26: get next week, and I just think next week in Pittsburgh,
- 1:26:30Speaker 26: we're going to talk about this team completely different than
- 1:26:32Speaker 26: people are talking about them right now.
- 1:26:33Speaker 18: Thanks, Anthony.
- 1:26:35Speaker 5: Appreciate it.
- 1:26:37Speaker 8: In hindsight, too, and I kind of touched upon this
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: in the lead-up, too, I just wondered, there was a
- 1:26:40Speaker 8: lot of weight attached to this game because of what
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: happened in the Super Bowl and a lot of subplots,
- 1:26:43Speaker 8: and not like one of those first games where you
- 1:26:46Speaker 8: just kind of walk in and there's no preconceived motivations
- 1:26:49Speaker 8: or notions about, you know, this game was kind of
- 1:26:51Speaker 8: loaded in that regard. I don't know if that played
- 1:26:53Speaker 8: a part in it, but something appealing about just playing
- 1:26:55Speaker 8: a team straight up next week, Pittsburgh.
- 1:26:57Speaker 5: It's not all these ancillary storylines.
- 1:26:59Speaker 7: No baggage. You know, all those kind of things.
- 1:27:02Speaker 11: Revenge game from last year.
- 1:27:03Speaker 8: I don't know how much they made of that, but
- 1:27:05Speaker 8: there was a lot going.
- 1:27:06Speaker 5: Into this game.
- 1:27:07Speaker 3: I would just say, and I have a sort of
- 1:27:10Speaker 3: one of my, you know, I have all these stupid
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: rules that I have, and one of them that I
- 1:27:15Speaker 3: try to follow is I don't ever try to tell
- 1:27:17Speaker 3: people how they should feel.
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 1:27:20Speaker 7: I love Anthony.
- 1:27:21Speaker 3: He's been with us, if not since the very, very beginning.
- 1:27:24Speaker 3: He's been with us for a long time. He's one
- 1:27:26Speaker 3: of our very loyal fans, and I do love him.
- 1:27:29Speaker 3: I'm calling a little BS that at 10-0, with the
- 1:27:33Speaker 3: other team's backup quarterback and three minutes left in the
- 1:27:36Speaker 3: third quarter, he didn't expect to win the game. I
- 1:27:39Speaker 3: don't know how you could not have expected to win
- 1:27:40Speaker 3: that game as a Patriots fan, the way the game
- 1:27:43Speaker 3: was going and the way Seattle was without their quarterback.
- 1:27:48Speaker 3: It was an enormous hole in their offense. That's a
- 1:27:52Speaker 3: lost opportunity. I don't care about banner night. I don't
- 1:27:54Speaker 3: care about playing in Seattle. That's a game that Patriots
- 1:27:57Speaker 3: should have won.
- 1:27:58Speaker 9: I agree with you, and if the offensive line, I
- 1:28:00Speaker 9: agree with them that the protection was better. The run
- 1:28:02Speaker 9: blocking was not better.
- 1:28:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I thought the tackles were a little better than
- 1:28:05Speaker 3: they were in the Super Bowl. I thought the interior
- 1:28:08Speaker 3: was rough, and I thought the pass protection in general
- 1:28:10Speaker 3: was rough again. Not like the Super Bowl, but it
- 1:28:14Speaker 3: wasn't great.
- 1:28:14Speaker 8: Yeah, I felt pretty good about what Will Campbell did,
- 1:28:18Speaker 8: and right now he's the guy that I kind of
- 1:28:20Speaker 8: feel best about which is kind of strange I mean
- 1:28:22Speaker 8: I like Morgan Moses to Paul's point but I feel
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: like at any moment his season or career might be
- 1:28:28Speaker 8: over you know like this is tenuous like the.
- 1:28:30Speaker 3: Fact that Mike mentioned him as one of the guys
- 1:28:32Speaker 3: you know he was able to go back like I
- 1:28:34Speaker 3: saw him kind of go to the locker room early
- 1:28:36Speaker 3: before the half was over but I just thought that
- 1:28:38Speaker 3: was we're not gonna get the ball back.
- 1:28:40Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:28:41Speaker 29: Yeah.
- 1:28:41Speaker 8: And I also, I, you know, and I, I just,
- 1:28:43Speaker 8: I'd never get the PFF grades. I just don't get them.
- 1:28:46Speaker 8: And I, I like Mike, I want you to me.
- 1:28:49Speaker 8: PFF will tell you he's their best lineman.
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: And he was great. He goes to the green.
- 1:28:53Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:28:53Speaker 7: I just, I just didn't miss a snap in the game,
- 1:28:55Speaker 7: by the way.
- 1:28:56Speaker 19: Yeah.
- 1:28:57Speaker 7: I don't know. Maybe he was in between series. He
- 1:28:59Speaker 7: did go to the walk-in. So I'm sorry. I cut
- 1:29:02Speaker 7: you off.
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: No, it's okay.
- 1:29:03Speaker 3: I just, you know, I went in with the best
- 1:29:05Speaker 3: rated lineman. I thought they all kind of had their
- 1:29:07Speaker 3: ups and downs during the course of the game.
- 1:29:08Speaker 8: I mean, I saw Wilson get beat right off the snap.
- 1:29:10Speaker 8: I think, look, AVT didn't play last year. So let's
- 1:29:13Speaker 8: give that guy just a tiny bit of grace as
- 1:29:15Speaker 8: he works his way back in. But the middle of
- 1:29:18Speaker 8: the line was not good, and I would say that's
- 1:29:20Speaker 8: a big part of the run game.
- 1:29:20Speaker 9: And while we're on the offensive line, I keep coming
- 1:29:23Speaker 9: back in my head to a point Christian L.A. made
- 1:29:25Speaker 9: about using that first-round draft pick on Lomu. That is
- 1:29:29Speaker 9: losing sight of the big picture. You need to build
- 1:29:31Speaker 9: this offensive line because you've got a franchise quarterback. You know,
- 1:29:34Speaker 9: you might want an impact player in the first round
- 1:29:36Speaker 9: for this year because, like we talked about, Mike Vrabel
- 1:29:39Speaker 9: came in to rebuild it. First year you go to
- 1:29:40Speaker 9: the Super Bowl, the bar's set way up here. All
- 1:29:43Speaker 9: of a sudden you're in win now when this is
- 1:29:44Speaker 9: a multi-year thing. And I love the Lomu pick as
- 1:29:47Speaker 9: a guy you want to come in and develop and
- 1:29:49Speaker 9: have that big picture in mind for Drake May. And
- 1:29:51Speaker 9: that's exactly what we're talking about. A guy like Morgan Moses,
- 1:29:53Speaker 9: that's game one. He goes to the locker room and
- 1:29:56Speaker 9: Mike Vrabel goes to the podium and says he was
- 1:29:57Speaker 9: able to come back. It's why you make that Lomu selection.
- 1:30:02Speaker 3: I don't know if Lomu is a good pick or not,
- 1:30:04Speaker 3: and this is an argument that goes back in PU
- 1:30:08Speaker 3: from the draft when we originally had it, and Evan
- 1:30:11Speaker 3: was very defensive of the pick.
- 1:30:13Speaker 7: I don't know if he's a good pick. I don't
- 1:30:15Speaker 7: know if he can play.
- 1:30:16Speaker 3: I don't think he had a great training camp, quite frankly,
- 1:30:19Speaker 3: but the idea of the pick, I understand, and that's
- 1:30:23Speaker 3: kind of what I said then, and that's what I
- 1:30:24Speaker 3: say today. I don't think they expected to get anything
- 1:30:28Speaker 3: really out of him on field in year one. And,
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: you know, I understand why Christian feels the way he
- 1:30:34Speaker 3: feels because he felt like there was things they could
- 1:30:37Speaker 3: have done. I don't know what the pass rusher was
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: that was available that would have made a bigger impact.
- 1:30:44Speaker 7: Maybe there was one.
- 1:30:44Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: Quick email here.
- 1:30:46Speaker 8: I'm sorry I haven't done a better job on the emails,
- 1:30:48Speaker 8: but the phones have just been lit up and they're
- 1:30:50Speaker 8: still lit up and I can't get through. But a
- 1:30:52Speaker 8: little love for Jack from Dan in Virginia via Michigan.
- 1:30:56Speaker 8: Just saying on the positive side, Jack is slotted. He
- 1:30:58Speaker 8: had some complaints about Josh McDowell. We've heard enough about
- 1:31:00Speaker 8: all that right now. I'm going to give this a positive.
- 1:31:02Speaker 8: On a positive side, Jack is slotted quite comfortably into
- 1:31:04Speaker 8: the host chair of the pre- and post-game show. It
- 1:31:06Speaker 8: can be tough to fit into any established group dynamic.
- 1:31:08Speaker 8: Jack already seems very comfortable and effective as host. It's
- 1:31:11Speaker 8: also great for us fans to get more of Troy Brown.
- 1:31:14Speaker 8: Speaking of the post-game show, last night Paul said he
- 1:31:16Speaker 8: hadn't been in a fight since.
- 1:31:17Speaker 5: The third grade.
- 1:31:18Speaker 8: Isn't there a classic moment in PU history where Paul
- 1:31:20Speaker 8: talks about getting to a fight with a Packers fan?
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: I seem to remember something about it. Someone hadn't pulled
- 1:31:25Speaker 5: Paul off of him.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: That was an Everett fight. That was an ever fight.
- 1:31:29Speaker 3: We just sort of like argued back and forth. No punches.
- 1:31:32Speaker 11: Not physical.
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: You don't want any.
- 1:31:34Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:31:35Speaker 7: No, I keep going. I think.
- 1:31:36Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:31:36Speaker 11: When was your last verbal altercation?
- 1:31:39Speaker 7: Last night? Probably with you.
- 1:31:41Speaker 5: With himself? Somebody called into the show this morning.
- 1:31:45Speaker 3: The guy that claimed that Drake May was hurt last night.
- 1:31:50Speaker 9: First off, I appreciate it, brother, but after seeing Paul
- 1:31:53Speaker 9: last night, once we hit 1 a.m., I've got my
- 1:31:56Speaker 9: doubts that his last fight was in third grade.
- 1:31:59Speaker 8: I've got my doubts. All right, let's continue to try
- 1:32:02Speaker 8: to rifle through these phone calls. Appreciate everybody calling in.
- 1:32:04Speaker 5: This has been great. William in Miami.
- 1:32:06Speaker 4: Hey, William.
- 1:32:08Speaker 29: Hey, everybody.
- 1:32:08Speaker 27: How's everybody doing?
- 1:32:09Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:32:11Speaker 13: Good, good.
- 1:32:11Speaker 27: I have two thoughts.
- 1:32:14Speaker 33: Everybody compares Drake to this guy, and this perennial MVP
- 1:32:18Speaker 33: player in his sixth year had the same exact game,
- 1:32:22Speaker 33: if not to a worse team. I don't know if
- 1:32:24Speaker 33: you guys remember, Paul, you probably do. It was against
- 1:32:26Speaker 33: the Jets. Aaron Rodgers goes out on the first play.
- 1:32:31Speaker 26: Josh Allen has.
- 1:32:32Speaker 7: Opening night on Monday night, they get through four picks.
- 1:32:34Speaker 33: Mm-hmm.
- 1:32:35Speaker 19: Yep.
- 1:32:35Speaker 33: Going 3-2-3. They were up 13-6 in the fourth quarter.
- 1:32:39Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:32:39Speaker 33: And just do a bad interception on their own 30-30.
- 1:32:42Speaker 7: It was three picks they threw?
- 1:32:44Speaker 5: Okay, yeah.
- 1:32:45Speaker 3: No, Josh Allen is the guy that Drake May gets
- 1:32:47Speaker 3: compared to a lot. He hasn't achieved anywhere near as
- 1:32:50Speaker 3: much as Josh Allen has.
- 1:32:52Speaker 42: No, no, no.
- 1:32:53Speaker 33: He hasn't accomplished anything near that yet. But, I mean,
- 1:32:56Speaker 33: for all the comps and all the freaking out, it's like, yo,
- 1:32:59Speaker 33: I feel like that Jets team was definitely a much
- 1:33:01Speaker 33: worse team than it was on a Monday night primetime game.
- 1:33:04Speaker 33: And that's what you get with these kind of quarterbacks.
- 1:33:05Speaker 33: My second point is going to be, and I know
- 1:33:07Speaker 33: we're tired of talking about Josh McDaniels, but it's just
- 1:33:09Speaker 33: the point of the style of Josh. I feel like
- 1:33:12Speaker 33: Drake wants to run a lot of boot action, West
- 1:33:15Speaker 33: Coast style. I'm just questioning, is Josh the right fit
- 1:33:19Speaker 33: for Drake? Josh is a great O.C., you know, six-time
- 1:33:22Speaker 33: Super Bowl champ, I believe. So I just want to
- 1:33:24Speaker 33: know your guys' thoughts on that.
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: Thanks.
- 1:33:26Speaker 27: I'll take it off of you.
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: Thank you, William. Appreciate it.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: Sorry I was reading the other person.
- 1:33:31Speaker 3: I was just mesmerized by Slater and Kelly Kapowski being
- 1:33:35Speaker 3: together on this TV show that we're watching off air.
- 1:33:39Speaker 7: Bringing back some memories. Anyway, Fred would say they can't
- 1:33:42Speaker 7: see that, Paul. And he's right. I shouldn't be talking
- 1:33:45Speaker 7: about something the audience can't see.
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: I do appreciate him pulling up the example.
- 1:33:48Speaker 9: As someone who's looking to be hopeful about Drake May
- 1:33:51Speaker 9: this morning, that's a nice little piece of data.
- 1:33:54Speaker 3: No, I did remember that the Jets had entered that
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: season with all kinds of expectations. They had a really
- 1:34:01Speaker 3: good defense, and then Aaron Rodgers goes down in the
- 1:34:03Speaker 3: first series of the game, and that's a game that
- 1:34:05Speaker 3: Buffalo should have won easily. And because of Josh Allen,
- 1:34:08Speaker 3: they didn't. And it's a good apples-to-apples comparison.
- 1:34:13Speaker 5: Keep rifle through these calls.
- 1:34:16Speaker 8: Jay is down in Missouri. Hey, Jay, thanks for calling in. Jay,
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: did you give up? All right, you're off the list.
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: Oh, cut. We've got things to do here. We've got
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: Matt in Virginia. Hey, Matt.
- 1:34:31Speaker 33: Hey, guys, how you doing?
- 1:34:32Speaker 43: I heard you said that you were tired of hearing
- 1:34:34Speaker 43: about Josh McDaniels.
- 1:34:34Speaker 24: I can only tune into the second half of the show.
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 1:34:37Speaker 21: Whatever you got.
- 1:34:40Speaker 24: Well, I keep seeing people online talk about how, oh, well,
- 1:34:45Speaker 24: you know, Drake May is this, Drake May did that,
- 1:34:47Speaker 24: Drake May, he threw interceptions. For the first three quarters
- 1:34:50Speaker 24: of the game, he played really well, and people don't want.
- 1:34:54Speaker 33: To acknowledge that.
- 1:34:55Speaker 16: Yes, fourth quarter was rough.
- 1:34:58Speaker 24: I also think that Josh McDaniel set him up to fail.
- 1:35:01Speaker 24: I mean, he didn't let Drake May throw. He let
- 1:35:04Speaker 24: him throw only ten times in the first half. The
- 1:35:07Speaker 24: second half comes along. He realizes that his game plan
- 1:35:10Speaker 24: of run, run, run, run, run, throw once, run, run,
- 1:35:14Speaker 24: run doesn't work.
- 1:35:15Speaker 33: And he expects Drake May to bail him out.
- 1:35:17Speaker 24: I think he's getting too much hate.
- 1:35:19Speaker 33: I'll take it off the.
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: Air, guys.
- 1:35:21Speaker 3: I agree and I disagree. I agree wholeheartedly with the
- 1:35:24Speaker 3: game plan. We've talked about it ad nauseum in this show.
- 1:35:28Speaker 3: I don't understand why they ran the ball as often
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: as they did. particularly in early downs. I don't believe
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: Drake May played very well in the first half either.
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: He didn't make mistakes like this, but they didn't get
- 1:35:38Speaker 3: any yards and they didn't get any points.
- 1:35:40Speaker 7: That's the quarterback's job.
- 1:35:41Speaker 9: And in terms of putting your quarterback in a position
- 1:35:43Speaker 9: to be successful, when you look across the other side
- 1:35:45Speaker 9: of the field with a backup, and obviously the playbook
- 1:35:48Speaker 9: probably shrinks with a backup, but... That OC did a
- 1:35:50Speaker 9: great job of putting Drew Locke in positions to be successful,
- 1:35:54Speaker 9: getting him going, getting him in rhythm.
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: You didn't see that seemingly at all from Drake May
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: last night.
- 1:35:58Speaker 9: There was maybe one drive where it looked like, okay,
- 1:36:01Speaker 9: he's comfortable, he's in rhythm right now, he's feeling himself
- 1:36:04Speaker 9: a little bit.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: You didn't see that from Drake May a lot last night,
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: if at all.
- 1:36:08Speaker 5: No, I don't think he did at all.
- 1:36:09Speaker 8: I mean, where were the flashes of MVP, runner-up, Drake May,
- 1:36:12Speaker 8: where some of those It still sticks out in my mind.
- 1:36:15Speaker 8: I forget which playoff opponent it was, but somebody was like,
- 1:36:17Speaker 8: I think it was Houston, maybe like he's almost too
- 1:36:19Speaker 8: comfortable back there. And I know what they were talking about.
- 1:36:22Speaker 8: There were times where the chaos is around him. He's
- 1:36:24Speaker 8: not really aware of the rush. He's stepping up and
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: delivering dimes down the field. And that wasn't there yesterday. Now,
- 1:36:31Speaker 8: maybe it's a one-off. I think it goes back to
- 1:36:33Speaker 8: the point of, is he in a rut right now
- 1:36:35Speaker 8: that needs to be out? Or is it just he
- 1:36:37Speaker 8: played bad in the playoffs because he's, you know, all
- 1:36:39Speaker 8: the circumstances. And then he had a bad first game. And,
- 1:36:41Speaker 8: you know, is he going to come out against Pittsburgh?
- 1:36:43Speaker 8: and we're going to see more glimpses of MVP runner-up
- 1:36:46Speaker 8: Drake May.
- 1:36:46Speaker 5: That's what you need.
- 1:36:47Speaker 9: And that's what sparked our conversation with Troy Brown last
- 1:36:49Speaker 9: night on the postgame show is, okay, at what point
- 1:36:52Speaker 9: do you say to yourself, the game plan's not working,
- 1:36:54Speaker 9: let's pivot away from it?
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: And that's when he made the point.
- 1:36:57Speaker 9: I always ask myself as a coach, and coaches ask themselves,
- 1:37:00Speaker 9: are we in control of this game regardless of the score,
- 1:37:02Speaker 9: like you said.
- 1:37:03Speaker 2: Earlier, Paul?
- 1:37:03Speaker 3: Yeah, and I'm going to be a little defensive of
- 1:37:05Speaker 3: Drake here, okay? So I think it's easy, again, to
- 1:37:08Speaker 3: look at the box score and say, oh, he played
- 1:37:10Speaker 3: really well in the first half. I think he was
- 1:37:11Speaker 3: like 9 for 10 or something like that. for like
- 1:37:14Speaker 3: 60 yards, right? And I can sort of understand when
- 1:37:17Speaker 3: the game is going like that. I'm not condoning it.
- 1:37:21Speaker 3: He was reckless, as Mike Vrabel said when we heard
- 1:37:24Speaker 3: from Mike Vrabel in the middle of the show. I'm
- 1:37:27Speaker 3: not going to condone reckless behavior with the football. The
- 1:37:30Speaker 3: quarterback's the most important guy. He's got the ball in
- 1:37:31Speaker 3: his hands in every play. But I can sort of
- 1:37:33Speaker 3: understand why he got impatient. Because I'm completing these passes,
- 1:37:37Speaker 3: I'm dinking and dunking, and we're not going anywhere with it.
- 1:37:40Speaker 3: We're not getting into scoring position by me throwing these
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: five-yard passes. So I can sort of understand why he
- 1:37:47Speaker 3: might have felt, I need to push the envelope a
- 1:37:49Speaker 3: little bit. We need to make some chunk plays because
- 1:37:51Speaker 3: we're not good enough to put 12, 15 play drives
- 1:37:55Speaker 3: together against this defense.
- 1:37:57Speaker 7: It wasn't working.
- 1:37:58Speaker 10: And that's why I feel like I wish they were
- 1:37:59Speaker 10: just more aggressive right at the start of the game,
- 1:38:02Speaker 10: you know, knowing their secondary was what it was.
- 1:38:04Speaker 11: Maybe Drake.
- 1:38:06Speaker 10: Gets a few X plays and builds some confidence, and
- 1:38:08Speaker 10: then every single snap, he's not just being reminded of
- 1:38:11Speaker 10: exactly what happened in the Super Bowl to him over.
- 1:38:13Speaker 5: And over again. Yeah, no X plays for the Patriots.
- 1:38:16Speaker 5: I believe the Seahawks had three, including the 45-yard touchdown.
- 1:38:19Speaker 11: No chunkies.
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: Eric's out in California.
- 1:38:21Speaker 4: Hey, Eric.
- 1:38:23Speaker 29: Hey, how's it going, guys?
- 1:38:24Speaker 13: First time caller, so I'm kind of excited.
- 1:38:26Speaker 5: Thanks for calling.
- 1:38:27Speaker 6: Welcome.
- 1:38:27Speaker 13: I have a couple points.
- 1:38:29Speaker 14: I don't know.
- 1:38:30Speaker 13: Overall, I think our defensive coordinator had a good game plan.
- 1:38:33Speaker 13: But when I was watching, I've seen a couple times
- 1:38:36Speaker 13: he tried to do the same thing Seattle did and
- 1:38:39Speaker 13: blip Gonzo. And I think when we did that, that
- 1:38:42Speaker 13: was when we gave up. I want to say that's
- 1:38:43Speaker 13: when we gave up the JSN touchdown, as well as
- 1:38:46Speaker 13: another big play in the red zone that they could
- 1:38:48Speaker 13: have potentially scored on. So I don't really know if
- 1:38:50Speaker 13: I like.
- 1:38:51Speaker 21: That play call.
- 1:38:52Speaker 13: Also, what's going on about Kyle Williams? I think yesterday
- 1:38:57Speaker 13: would have probably been a game we could kind of
- 1:38:58Speaker 13: maybe see him in a more expendable or just a
- 1:39:01Speaker 13: more involved role. And I don't really think he got
- 1:39:04Speaker 13: a snap on offense. So I don't know if he
- 1:39:07Speaker 13: was hurt.
- 1:39:08Speaker 3: 12 plays he played on offense. He played 12 plays
- 1:39:12Speaker 3: on offense. And that was obviously after A.J. Brown got hurt.
- 1:39:16Speaker 13: Okay, so maybe I just didn't see that.
- 1:39:19Speaker 3: But they did not target him, to your larger point.
- 1:39:23Speaker 3: And I thought, Alex, you brought that up earlier in
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: the show. I thought there was some chances maybe. And
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: I'm sure they did. I'd like to see the plays
- 1:39:31Speaker 3: that Kyle Williams was on the field. I'll bet he
- 1:39:33Speaker 3: ran some of those routes. And maybe they just didn't
- 1:39:37Speaker 3: feel like it was there.
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: I don't know. Thanks, Eric. Yeah, it's just this big question.
- 1:39:41Speaker 8: I mean, this is the conversation we'll probably get into
- 1:39:44Speaker 8: next week about Pittsburgh is what do you do without
- 1:39:47Speaker 8: AJ Brown? I mean, this is, I feel like there
- 1:39:49Speaker 8: were so many times this summer leading up that were like,
- 1:39:51Speaker 8: and you know, if AJ Brown gets hurt or, you know,
- 1:39:53Speaker 8: if AJ Brown gets hurt, you consider it a lot,
- 1:39:55Speaker 8: a lot of it related to booty, but now with
- 1:39:58Speaker 8: what they have, you know, do they game plan a
- 1:40:01Speaker 8: little more Kyle Williams? I just, I go back to
- 1:40:03Speaker 8: the Matt Collins being predictable thing, you know, trying to
- 1:40:05Speaker 8: get away from that too.
- 1:40:06Speaker 2: That's what we talked about is so disappointing.
- 1:40:09Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:40:09Speaker 9: And so frustrating because everyone in the booty trade, this
- 1:40:11Speaker 9: is the people who didn't like the booty trade.
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: This morning, they're taking their victory lap.
- 1:40:15Speaker 11: It's almost like it was spoken into existence.
- 1:40:17Speaker 9: You know, and I'll never forget a Paul point. That's
- 1:40:20Speaker 9: a great point, Alex. That's actually what it kind of
- 1:40:22Speaker 9: feels like. And what Paul said in the preseason was
- 1:40:24Speaker 9: every time you hear someone, you know, criticize the booty trade,
- 1:40:28Speaker 9: it's always about A.J. Brown getting hurt. And the fact
- 1:40:31Speaker 9: that it's football, people get hurt, but you don't ever
- 1:40:33Speaker 9: plan on someone getting hurt. That's not how it works.
- 1:40:35Speaker 9: And the fact that we're here. after week one is actually,
- 1:40:38Speaker 9: I'm in disbelief. It's a legit second guess. I would
- 1:40:42Speaker 9: have made the trade. I guess I'm in the small minority.
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: I would have done what they did, but it's a
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: legit second guess, and I don't think those people are wrong,
- 1:40:49Speaker 3: and now everybody that feels that way is.
- 1:40:52Speaker 7: sticking their chests out and saying you could use Booty now.
- 1:40:55Speaker 5: I would have done the trade.
- 1:40:56Speaker 8: I don't think Keishon Booty is going to make much
- 1:40:58Speaker 8: of a difference without A.J.
- 1:40:59Speaker 4: Brown.
- 1:40:59Speaker 8: I think where this team was at with A.J. Brown
- 1:41:01Speaker 8: versus where they're at without him is not going to
- 1:41:03Speaker 8: make a difference if you had Keishon Booty out there.
- 1:41:05Speaker 8: I think he was a lame duck. He was going
- 1:41:06Speaker 8: to sign somewhere else next year anyway. I'd rather take
- 1:41:10Speaker 8: my lumps, see what Kyle Williams can do, give him
- 1:41:12Speaker 8: some more opportunities. I think he has more potential. We've
- 1:41:16Speaker 8: seen what Keishon Booty is. He's a good down-the-field receiver,
- 1:41:20Speaker 8: but I just don't see him making that much of
- 1:41:22Speaker 8: a difference. To me, it's not about skill. It's just
- 1:41:24Speaker 8: about the body and some catches he made last year.
- 1:41:27Speaker 9: And the other thing, too, Deuce, like we talked about,
- 1:41:28Speaker 9: you never plan on a guy getting hurt. And to
- 1:41:30Speaker 9: the people frustrated with the booty trade, you have to
- 1:41:32Speaker 9: bring yourself back to when they made the move. All
- 1:41:34Speaker 9: the conversations about depth, Mike Vrabel admitted, this is not
- 1:41:37Speaker 9: a deep team. And they took from a position of
- 1:41:39Speaker 9: depth to add more depth.
- 1:41:41Speaker 2: You know what I mean? That is what the situation
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: was for the Patriots.
- 1:41:44Speaker 9: So I think people upset with the booty trade this
- 1:41:46Speaker 9: morning because of what happened last night need to remind
- 1:41:49Speaker 9: themselves that.
- 1:41:50Speaker 2: I get it.
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: Keep trying to rifle through these. Dylan's in North Carolina.
- 1:41:53Speaker 5: Another North Carolina call. Hey, Dylan.
- 1:41:56Speaker 6: Hey, how y'all doing?
- 1:41:57Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:41:59Speaker 43: I don't want to overreact, but, Paul, don't you always say, like,
- 1:42:02Speaker 43: some quarterbacks have it in clutch situations and some don't?
- 1:42:07Speaker 7: So are we overreacting or not?
- 1:42:10Speaker 43: No, no, I'm just saying at what point do we
- 1:42:12Speaker 43: look at Drake May and be.
- 1:42:13Speaker 2: Like, all right, he does not have it. No, Dylan,
- 1:42:16Speaker 2: that's fair.
- 1:42:18Speaker 43: Cause he's got some big games and I think he
- 1:42:20Speaker 43: was clutch in the first Buffalo game. And I mean
- 1:42:23Speaker 43: the race game, maybe you could say that, but Lamar
- 1:42:26Speaker 43: Jackson wasn't on the field. So I think at the
- 1:42:29Speaker 43: end of this year, if he doesn't look good in
- 1:42:31Speaker 43: those big games and those clutch situations, then I think
- 1:42:33Speaker 43: we have a, really big problem on our hands, and
- 1:42:36Speaker 43: I'll take it off the air.
- 1:42:37Speaker 3: Yeah, and I would say, you know, Dylan's in North Carolina.
- 1:42:41Speaker 3: The thing that worries me about that aspect is what
- 1:42:45Speaker 3: I hear from people who watched him very closely at
- 1:42:48Speaker 3: North Carolina. That was supposedly, I didn't want to watch
- 1:42:51Speaker 3: the games closely enough to know, like, when he played
- 1:42:54Speaker 3: Clemson or, you know, North Carolina State or North Carolina,
- 1:42:58Speaker 3: I don't know, some of these bigger games for North Carolina,
- 1:43:02Speaker 3: people say, this is kind of what you got sometimes.
- 1:43:05Speaker 7: He'd make some really good.
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: Plays, and then he would try to do too much
- 1:43:08Speaker 3: and play a little hero ball, and so the situation
- 1:43:11Speaker 3: would get away from him a little bit. That worries
- 1:43:13Speaker 3: me a little bit because I do think Dylan's right.
- 1:43:16Speaker 5: I get the point.
- 1:43:16Speaker 7: I do think you either have it or you don't.
- 1:43:18Speaker 8: I get the point, but I also think that's something
- 1:43:20Speaker 8: that can come with maturity, and I also think that
- 1:43:22Speaker 8: Drake May is, what, 23, 24 years old right now.
- 1:43:26Speaker 8: You look at Seattle won a Super Bowl with Sam
- 1:43:28Speaker 8: Darnold on however many teams. Baker Mayfield finally found a home.
- 1:43:31Speaker 8: sometimes you do need to be a little bit patient
- 1:43:33Speaker 8: with these guys. And, you know, I think Josh Allen's
- 1:43:35Speaker 8: got a clutch gene. He hasn't made it to a
- 1:43:38Speaker 8: Super Bowl yet.
- 1:43:38Speaker 5: So I don't know. You know what I mean?
- 1:43:39Speaker 7: He's been very clutch in his career.
- 1:43:41Speaker 23: Sure, sure.
- 1:43:41Speaker 7: But we're talking about Super Bowls. Sam Donald, I would say,
- 1:43:44Speaker 7: doesn't have the clutch gene.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: And he won a Super Bowl.
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:43:46Speaker 2: Like, you don't.
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: Necessarily, you can get lucky and not have to come from,
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: you don't have to come from behind to win a
- 1:43:51Speaker 3: Super Bowl.
- 1:43:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:43:52Speaker 7: Like, if it falls that way, then.
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:43:54Speaker 8: But even if you're clutch, it doesn't mean that you're
- 1:43:57Speaker 8: winning multiple Super Bowls. You know, like, There's varying degrees
- 1:43:59Speaker 8: of it. I just think I take issue with the
- 1:44:01Speaker 8: clutch gene as if you're inherited with it and you
- 1:44:04Speaker 8: can either execute at the end of a game or
- 1:44:05Speaker 8: you can't. And I would reserve judgment for when Drake
- 1:44:08Speaker 8: May acquires a bunch of experience and maybe we can
- 1:44:10Speaker 8: be a little patient instead of, you know, my worst nightmare.
- 1:44:14Speaker 8: My worst nightmare would be if I'm a Jets fan
- 1:44:16Speaker 8: and I watch Sam Donald, the guy that we drafted
- 1:44:18Speaker 8: and we gave up on and he kicks around and,
- 1:44:20Speaker 8: but somehow he finds it like it does happen. Drake
- 1:44:23Speaker 8: May has all the talent in the world. I'm willing
- 1:44:24Speaker 8: to bet on that and be patient on that and
- 1:44:27Speaker 8: give this kid a chance to acquire the experiences that
- 1:44:29Speaker 8: maybe gets him to that point where he has that clutch.
- 1:44:31Speaker 9: I appreciate that deuce in a, in a world of
- 1:44:34Speaker 9: Drake may panic this morning.
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: I am trying. Did you believe it? Dan is down
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: in Jersey. Hey Dan, what's going on?
- 1:44:42Speaker 2: Hey, Hey, Hey all.
- 1:44:45Speaker 27: Listen, I'm not going to pile on. I mean, I
- 1:44:48Speaker 27: think Drake, I mean, listen, it's the first game. You know,
- 1:44:52Speaker 27: if you look two years ago, he wasn't good against Houston.
- 1:44:55Speaker 27: I don't think right. Last year, obviously, laid an egg
- 1:44:59Speaker 27: against the Raiders right out. So maybe he's like Brian Bellow.
- 1:45:03Speaker 27: He's got to get him past the first inning.
- 1:45:05Speaker 33: I don't know.
- 1:45:07Speaker 27: But I wanted to ask about Will Campbell. I noticed
- 1:45:12Speaker 27: a couple of occasions he just immediately went into a
- 1:45:15Speaker 27: role right after he got out of his stance. Did
- 1:45:18Speaker 27: you guys notice that?
- 1:45:19Speaker 4: Yeah, check.
- 1:45:20Speaker 5: Check.
- 1:45:21Speaker 7: Cut blocks.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: Cut blocks.
- 1:45:23Speaker 9: Trying to just chop the guy down and just avoid
- 1:45:25Speaker 9: even any type of pass rush. It's just a strategic move,
- 1:45:28Speaker 9: you know, to just get it at the end of
- 1:45:29Speaker 9: the ground.
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: You see it a lot in quick game as well.
- 1:45:33Speaker 27: Okay, so that was okay. I guess it was early enough.
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that was not him just stumbling.
- 1:45:38Speaker 5: Steamroller!
- 1:45:39Speaker 3: And he just starts rolling. That's part of the protection
- 1:45:42Speaker 3: on a particular play. It's usually the ball's coming out quickly.
- 1:45:44Speaker 3: You want to get the arms down.
- 1:45:46Speaker 8: And that's what the disconnect is, where he's throwing the
- 1:45:48Speaker 8: ball down the field while the tackles are cutting.
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: Shouldn't that have been a quick... That's one of the
- 1:45:52Speaker 5: questions from the Twitter film guys.
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: Thank you, Dan.
- 1:45:55Speaker 5: Sorry we got to... Get through it here as we
- 1:45:57Speaker 5: get down to the last 15 minutes.
- 1:45:58Speaker 7: You're doing a good job, Mike.
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: Chad is out and about. I really appreciate that, Paul. Hey, Chad,
- 1:46:02Speaker 5: what's going on?
- 1:46:02Speaker 21: Hey, how's it going, y'all?
- 1:46:03Speaker 5: I've never had this many calls before. Go ahead, Chad.
- 1:46:07Speaker 21: Hey, I'm calling because I'm actually kind of excited after
- 1:46:10Speaker 21: that game. I feel a little happier. I feel like
- 1:46:13Speaker 21: the coaching transfers from last year to this year, I
- 1:46:16Speaker 21: think they beat themselves more than anything. It wasn't Seattle
- 1:46:19Speaker 21: beating them. And also, I like Josh's– Game plan on offense,
- 1:46:24Speaker 21: I think the teams both were rusty and nobody played
- 1:46:27Speaker 21: in the offseason, so running the ball down the throat
- 1:46:31Speaker 21: kind of hit a brick wall in the beginning, but
- 1:46:34Speaker 21: I truly felt like the last two, maybe even three drives,
- 1:46:39Speaker 21: Stevenson was actually making way and actually going for eight
- 1:46:44Speaker 21: to ten yards a couple of times. And I think
- 1:46:47Speaker 21: they should have ran it more on that last drive.
- 1:46:50Speaker 21: instead of getting, I can't remember what it was, that
- 1:46:53Speaker 21: happened two plays right before the interception on first down
- 1:46:56Speaker 21: that put them in the negative. But they should have
- 1:46:58Speaker 21: definitely ran it more often on those last two drives,
- 1:47:01Speaker 21: I felt like.
- 1:47:03Speaker 4: Thanks, Chad.
- 1:47:04Speaker 2: You had me in the first half, Chad.
- 1:47:05Speaker 5: From the other end of the spectrum.
- 1:47:06Speaker 2: That was a Brett Kirsch take.
- 1:47:08Speaker 3: That whole call was completely the opposite of what I
- 1:47:11Speaker 3: felt about absolutely every aspect of that game.
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
- 1:47:15Speaker 27: All right.
- 1:47:16Speaker 11: I appreciate it.
- 1:47:16Speaker 2: One more here on the call.
- 1:47:18Speaker 5: It's Joe in Missouri calling back in. Hey, Joe, thanks
- 1:47:20Speaker 5: for calling back.
- 1:47:23Speaker 28: Hey, no problem, guys.
- 1:47:23Speaker 18: Thank you. I'm a big fan. I'm just happy to
- 1:47:25Speaker 18: get through.
- 1:47:26Speaker 13: I don't know if I really read with Chad.
- 1:47:29Speaker 42: I was going to see it from your guys' point
- 1:47:30Speaker 42: of view, and I don't know if Evan's there or not.
- 1:47:33Speaker 42: But watching the game last night, I mean, kind of
- 1:47:35Speaker 42: taking it back to the postseason last year, the play
- 1:47:40Speaker 42: calling from Josh and Daniels has just been– I don't
- 1:47:44Speaker 42: know if it's just the tougher defenses maybe, but even
- 1:47:46Speaker 42: when I'm still on the couch, I'm just a guy
- 1:47:48Speaker 42: who looks for UCS, and I feel like I can
- 1:47:50Speaker 42: tell what he's going to call next. I just want
- 1:47:52Speaker 42: to see if he's going to respond to you, and
- 1:47:54Speaker 42: if there's anything he can do to fix that with
- 1:47:55Speaker 42: AJ Brown being hurt, or if it's just something that's
- 1:48:00Speaker 42: not going to get fixed.
- 1:48:01Speaker 31: Thank you, guys.
- 1:48:02Speaker 5: Thanks, Joey.
- 1:48:03Speaker 8: What stinks to me is that, and the Brown injury aside,
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: it's like you brought in these fullbacks. You got a
- 1:48:08Speaker 8: young tight end. It just seemed like there were a
- 1:48:10Speaker 8: lot of options on the menu, and yet it still
- 1:48:14Speaker 8: looked and felt the same.
- 1:48:15Speaker 2: Still ordered the burger. Yeah.
- 1:48:17Speaker 7: Too much of that stuff for my liking.
- 1:48:19Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 1:48:20Speaker 3: Too much fullback. Too much banging head against wall, not
- 1:48:23Speaker 3: going nowhere.
- 1:48:23Speaker 8: Well, it was so apparent right from the get-go. The
- 1:48:25Speaker 8: first snap of the game, they were like, yep, there
- 1:48:27Speaker 8: goes the fullback.
- 1:48:28Speaker 5: Like, you knew instantly. And met at, like, the negative
- 1:48:32Speaker 5: one and didn't move it.
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: There was just... no, like we talked about last night, displacement.
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: There was just none of it.
- 1:48:39Speaker 9: And a lot of the times, some of these split
- 1:48:41Speaker 9: zone stuff, they're supposed to hit frontside, and there's one
- 1:48:44Speaker 9: way to put it, and when you bounce it, it
- 1:48:45Speaker 9: already goes wrong. And you saw a lot of that
- 1:48:47Speaker 9: last night. They didn't get any movement. Ramondre Stevenson bounces
- 1:48:50Speaker 9: it outside. He's getting met in the backfield for a
- 1:48:52Speaker 9: loss or no gain, or he's fighting for two yards,
- 1:48:54Speaker 9: fighting for his life for two yards. So definitely frustrating.
- 1:48:57Speaker 9: I echo the sentiment of you guys on that.
- 1:49:00Speaker 7: Yeah, and I do think it has to do with
- 1:49:01Speaker 7: these defenses that they're facing. It is different.
- 1:49:04Speaker 3: It's not the middle of October against the Browns. You've
- 1:49:08Speaker 3: got to do some different things against the Houstons and
- 1:49:12Speaker 3: the Seattles of the world.
- 1:49:13Speaker 7: Denver in the snow, that's a little tougher. It's hard.
- 1:49:18Speaker 5: It's hard.
- 1:49:20Speaker 7: So Drake said it's just really hard. I'm just kidding, Drake.
- 1:49:24Speaker 5: We want it to be hard.
- 1:49:25Speaker 7: I didn't mean that.
- 1:49:26Speaker 3: Can I take that one back?
- 1:49:30Speaker 5: Your caller from last night is calling back in real quick.
- 1:49:32Speaker 7: Paul Snark doesn't like it. I didn't like the Paul
- 1:49:34Speaker 7: Snark on that one.
- 1:49:35Speaker 5: Devontae's down in Texas. Hey, Devontae. What's going on?
- 1:49:38Speaker 23: Hey, guys.
- 1:49:39Speaker 32: Thanks for taking my call.
- 1:49:40Speaker 31: First time caller.
- 1:49:40Speaker 16: I appreciate you guys.
- 1:49:42Speaker 20: I just wanted to say I missed the first half,
- 1:49:44Speaker 20: but I'm not sure if you guys talked.
- 1:49:45Speaker 18: About Gabe Aukus.
- 1:49:47Speaker 43: To me, he looked pretty good getting his groove in
- 1:49:50Speaker 43: this first game of the season. I'm hoping these rookies
- 1:49:52Speaker 43: do pretty well. My only concern with Drake was just
- 1:49:55Speaker 43: some of those throws, of course, on that flea flicker.
- 1:49:58Speaker 43: It's kind of like he short-armed it on to A.J.
- 1:50:00Speaker 16: And then, of course, the pick at the end.
- 1:50:03Speaker 43: But, I mean, I'm pretty optimistic about this team based
- 1:50:05Speaker 43: off the calls.
- 1:50:07Speaker 18: I kind of agree with.
- 1:50:08Speaker 16: The guy when he said the run game was kind
- 1:50:09Speaker 16: of starting.
- 1:50:10Speaker 27: To pick up at the end.
- 1:50:11Speaker 18: Maybe that we should have ran.
- 1:50:12Speaker 16: The ball, you know, on that last drive.
- 1:50:14Speaker 7: I just feel like I watched a different game than
- 1:50:15Speaker 7: everybody else.
- 1:50:16Speaker 28: Pretty good.
- 1:50:18Speaker 13: Thank you, guys.
- 1:50:18Speaker 5: Thanks, Devontae.
- 1:50:19Speaker 2: Appreciate the call, man.
- 1:50:20Speaker 5: Appreciate you.
- 1:50:20Speaker 3: What would have had to happen for people to be
- 1:50:23Speaker 3: discouraged if that didn't discourage people?
- 1:50:28Speaker 5: Got the blinders on, Paul.
- 1:50:30Speaker 3: I mean, the other team was missing enormous parts of
- 1:50:32Speaker 3: their defense and lost its quarterback on the first drive
- 1:50:36Speaker 3: and then proceeded to line up incorrectly on no fewer
- 1:50:39Speaker 3: than four successful offensive plays that directly took points off
- 1:50:42Speaker 3: the board for Seattle.
- 1:50:45Speaker 7: And people are encouraged.
- 1:50:49Speaker 8: The only way I could feel encouraged is if I
- 1:50:52Speaker 8: felt like Drake needs some major adversity and some tough
- 1:50:56Speaker 8: times to fight through and to really try to bring
- 1:50:58Speaker 8: out this clutch gene and to kind of get beat
- 1:51:02Speaker 8: up a little bit and put him through the ringer.
- 1:51:04Speaker 5: He had a great year last year, but I don't know.
- 1:51:06Speaker 8: Maybe that's where it's headed, and he's going to have
- 1:51:08Speaker 8: to fight through everything this year, and it's going to
- 1:51:10Speaker 8: be a difficult year that will ultimately maybe serve him better.
- 1:51:13Speaker 9: To your point, Deuce, that experience last night, I think,
- 1:51:17Speaker 9: especially from what we saw last night, and I think
- 1:51:18Speaker 9: a lot of us also felt this way going into
- 1:51:20Speaker 9: the season, I think Drake's going to find himself in
- 1:51:23Speaker 9: a lot of those situations this year where he's driving
- 1:51:25Speaker 9: down the field, you've got to put points on the board,
- 1:51:27Speaker 9: or you're taking an L. It's not going to be
- 1:51:28Speaker 9: like last year where everything goes your way and you're
- 1:51:31Speaker 9: in the driver's seat in a lot of these games,
- 1:51:32Speaker 9: and that's just a matter of fact of the schedule
- 1:51:34Speaker 9: in the first place.
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: Not even has to do with a lot of.
- 1:51:36Speaker 9: The concerns we have with this team moving forward, but
- 1:51:40Speaker 9: he's going to be in a lot of those situations
- 1:51:41Speaker 9: this year, and I'm eager for the next one to
- 1:51:43Speaker 9: see if he learned anything from this one.
- 1:51:45Speaker 8: There's no question Patriots got to get back to work,
- 1:51:47Speaker 8: but hopefully they'll be wearing their Brunt Workwear, which makes
- 1:51:50Speaker 8: work boots and apparel that are built for the job site.
- 1:51:52Speaker 8: And as an official sponsor of the New England Patriots
- 1:51:54Speaker 8: and the Gillette Stadium field crew, their gear is comfortable, durable,
- 1:51:57Speaker 8: and named after the real workers in the trades that
- 1:51:59Speaker 8: helped design it. You can even try Brunt out on
- 1:52:01Speaker 8: the job, and if it doesn't blow you away, they
- 1:52:03Speaker 8: let you send it back. Save $ 10 on your first
- 1:52:05Speaker 8: order at BruntWorkwear.com backslash Pats or with coupon code P-A-T-S.
- 1:52:12Speaker 8: We got to keep getting those calls in Raisin, California.
- 1:52:14Speaker 5: What's up, Bray?
- 1:52:17Speaker 44: Hey guys, just real quick on Drake May.
- 1:52:19Speaker 29: I feel like it's been.
- 1:52:20Speaker 44: Said before, but I'll say it again. I feel like
- 1:52:22Speaker 44: he kind of has this hero ball kind of mindset
- 1:52:25Speaker 44: where he's always looking for the big play, the big
- 1:52:28Speaker 44: shot play. And I feel like he, he's looking for
- 1:52:31Speaker 44: that way too often when sometimes he, what he should
- 1:52:34Speaker 44: be doing is checking the ball down a little bit
- 1:52:37Speaker 44: because we don't always need those big plays. And I
- 1:52:39Speaker 44: feel like we saw that kind of yesterday. So I
- 1:52:42Speaker 44: feel like that's a mentality thing and it, So just
- 1:52:45Speaker 44: wanted to see what you guys think about that.
- 1:52:47Speaker 17: Thank you.
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: Thanks, Ray.
- 1:52:51Speaker 3: He needs to do a little more of that, right?
- 1:52:53Speaker 3: Needs to be a little more patient with the offense.
- 1:52:57Speaker 3: And it can't all be on him. And I think
- 1:53:00Speaker 3: he still kind of plays that way.
- 1:53:03Speaker 10: And just like the situational stuff, like there's time on
- 1:53:06Speaker 10: the clock. You can get a field goal and send
- 1:53:07Speaker 10: it to overtime. That's what was so frustrating because it
- 1:53:10Speaker 10: was really building up to be like signature game-winning drive.
- 1:53:13Speaker 11: They were kind of putting it together and then just
- 1:53:17Speaker 11: chuck it up into the end zone and let it
- 1:53:19Speaker 11: get taken away.
- 1:53:19Speaker 8: Paul, I hope I'm not calling you out on this
- 1:53:21Speaker 8: off-the-air point you made, but you said you might not
- 1:53:24Speaker 8: have felt all that different if they won the game,
- 1:53:26Speaker 8: and I echo that sentiment.
- 1:53:27Speaker 5: And even if they had.
- 1:53:28Speaker 8: Pulled it out, I would have been like, That's great.
- 1:53:31Speaker 8: They were able to get a win when it was terrible,
- 1:53:33Speaker 8: and it would feel like that Cincinnati game.
- 1:53:34Speaker 3: I'd feel a lot better if they won about the
- 1:53:37Speaker 3: team in general, but the performance in the offense in
- 1:53:40Speaker 3: particular just wasn't very good. I was discouraged because I
- 1:53:46Speaker 3: guess maybe I'm putting too much stock into what I
- 1:53:49Speaker 3: thought the game was going to be. I thought this
- 1:53:51Speaker 3: offense was going to be close to unstoppable. Now maybe
- 1:53:55Speaker 3: that was unrealistic in week one. Maybe I've got to
- 1:53:57Speaker 3: wait a few weeks to sort of knock off the
- 1:53:59Speaker 3: rust of not playing in the preseason. Maybe I'm guilty
- 1:54:02Speaker 3: of overlooking that, and you guys are right. Maybe he
- 1:54:05Speaker 3: needed a little more reps to get on the same page.
- 1:54:10Speaker 8: They're up against it now, that's for sure. I know
- 1:54:15Speaker 8: we haven't even seen Pittsburgh play yet. I can't get
- 1:54:18Speaker 8: out of my mind, and I know it's a new
- 1:54:19Speaker 8: coaching staff, so maybe things have finally changed.
- 1:54:21Speaker 5: But usually over the years.
- 1:54:23Speaker 8: The Patriots would spread out the Pittsburgh Steelers and they
- 1:54:27Speaker 8: would blast them through the air. I mean, you know,
- 1:54:29Speaker 8: the 2004 AFC Championship game as a game that immediately
- 1:54:32Speaker 8: comes to mind, the 2015 AFC Champion or 2016 AFC
- 1:54:35Speaker 8: Championship game. Is this the same team? Is this the
- 1:54:39Speaker 8: same defense? I don't know what to expect, but all
- 1:54:43Speaker 8: I know is Patriots got to focus on themselves and
- 1:54:45Speaker 8: try to, like, put some plays together and get some.
- 1:54:47Speaker 5: Good energy going.
- 1:54:48Speaker 9: You can at least appreciate the fact that it was
- 1:54:50Speaker 9: on a Wednesday, so you have more time to prep
- 1:54:52Speaker 9: than ever.
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: More time to listen.
- 1:54:54Speaker 5: And talk about it. Yeah, that's also a good point.
- 1:54:56Speaker 2: What's worse? Yeah, that's true.
- 1:54:58Speaker 9: But for them at least, they're going to come and
- 1:54:59Speaker 9: watch the tape, and then you have over a week
- 1:55:01Speaker 9: to prepare for that one, which should make you feel
- 1:55:04Speaker 9: better about it because there's going to be some tough conversations,
- 1:55:06Speaker 9: a lot of honest conversations, as Troy talked about last night,
- 1:55:09Speaker 9: in that building this week that hopefully they always talk
- 1:55:11Speaker 9: about that week one to week two jump.
- 1:55:13Speaker 2: That's when you get the best. That's the most improvement
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: you see in a football team.
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:55:17Speaker 2: Let's hope there's a lot of it.
- 1:55:18Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 1:55:18Speaker 8: I mean, coming home to like, you know, I mentioned
- 1:55:20Speaker 8: on the show last night, like, you know, last you
- 1:55:23Speaker 8: saw them, they were beating the Texans and going off on,
- 1:55:26Speaker 8: you know, on the rally before they send them out
- 1:55:27Speaker 8: to the Super Bowl. So, you know, you just hope
- 1:55:29Speaker 8: the energy is here in the building from the crowd
- 1:55:32Speaker 8: and that, you know, they're not in a weird way
- 1:55:35Speaker 8: after this result. Maybe 10 days go by. We get
- 1:55:38Speaker 8: some cocktails. It's Saturday. You know, it's a Sunday football
- 1:55:41Speaker 8: in the fall. I mean, this is what we all
- 1:55:43Speaker 8: live for.
- 1:55:43Speaker 2: Right, Paul? Get out there.
- 1:55:44Speaker 7: Make some noise.
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: Plans were made for him. But I just think it's
- 1:55:50Speaker 8: get back out here. I mean, look, this is the
- 1:55:51Speaker 8: only they're going to be then two road games after that.
- 1:55:54Speaker 8: So they've got to make the most of this game.
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: There's a lot on this one.
- 1:55:56Speaker 5: At Jacksonville, at Buffalo.
- 1:55:57Speaker 10: You play one home game all September. Really, I don't
- 1:56:00Speaker 10: know how many there are in October.
- 1:56:01Speaker 7: I half-joked with Deuce last night. I pointed at him.
- 1:56:03Speaker 7: I said, must win? Must win against Pittsburgh?
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: Must win week two.
- 1:56:07Speaker 7: It's kind of low-key a must win.
- 1:56:09Speaker 2: Did Pittsburgh squeak.
- 1:56:10Speaker 5: In last year to the playoffs? Am I misremembering that?
- 1:56:12Speaker 17: Huh?
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: Did Pittsburgh squeak into the playoffs last year?
- 1:56:14Speaker 2: They did. They did.
- 1:56:15Speaker 8: So, you know, three AFC playoff teams in a row,
- 1:56:18Speaker 8: two of which are on the road, one of which
- 1:56:19Speaker 8: is your primary division rival. and who knows what's going
- 1:56:23Speaker 8: to happen with A.J.
- 1:56:24Speaker 5: Brown if you're going to even have him.
- 1:56:26Speaker 8: You could be looking at, depending on what happens with
- 1:56:29Speaker 8: Romeo Dobbs, an offense that to me feels, maybe the
- 1:56:32Speaker 8: offensive line's a little better, but feels almost as shorthanded
- 1:56:34Speaker 8: as it did two years ago.
- 1:56:36Speaker 9: For those looking to do their own little self-scout, it
- 1:56:38Speaker 9: is the Falcons at the Steelers at 1 o'clock on Sunday.
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: That'll be on Fox.
- 1:56:42Speaker 5: Break it down. I'd watch it if I could.
- 1:56:44Speaker 7: That'll be on Red Zone.
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: I don't know if that one's going to be on
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: Red Zone, Paul.
- 1:56:48Speaker 11: You guys got to lock your calendars all Sunday.
- 1:56:51Speaker 7: All the games are on Red Zone, Jack.
- 1:56:54Speaker 5: You have the excuse, too.
- 1:56:55Speaker 10: I have work. I have to watch these games for
- 1:56:58Speaker 10: my job.
- 1:56:58Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:56:59Speaker 5: And then you can write off Sunday ticket on your taxes.
- 1:57:02Speaker 11: You should be able to, frankly.
- 1:57:04Speaker 2: Can I go back to a point?
- 1:57:04Speaker 5: Or expense it at least.
- 1:57:06Speaker 9: Can I go back to a point from Tuesday? Paul,
- 1:57:08Speaker 9: how do you watch a sitcom and sports at the
- 1:57:10Speaker 9: same time? I didn't get my answer on that. Because
- 1:57:12Speaker 9: if I'm in sports mode, I'm in sports mode. You
- 1:57:14Speaker 9: just flip back and forth.
- 1:57:15Speaker 7: I do not watch commercials.
- 1:57:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:57:18Speaker 11: You will not advertise to this man.
- 1:57:20Speaker 7: I do not watch commercials.
- 1:57:21Speaker 3: That's why I'm always stunned how the networks make so
- 1:57:25Speaker 3: much money when that's how they do. I mean, they
- 1:57:27Speaker 3: pay so much money to have these games because of
- 1:57:29Speaker 3: the advertisers. the advertisers are willing to pay so much money.
- 1:57:32Speaker 3: And I always think, why are you paying all this
- 1:57:34Speaker 3: money to advertise? No one's watching your.
- 1:57:36Speaker 7: Your ads.
- 1:57:36Speaker 2: I'm pushing that.
- 1:57:37Speaker 7: But evidently I am alone. And I'm the only one
- 1:57:39Speaker 7: who never watches the ads.
- 1:57:42Speaker 5: You have to watch them on the internet.
- 1:57:43Speaker 8: Sometimes you watch like, you know, someone on nfl.com and
- 1:57:45Speaker 8: it feels like, like every 60 seconds you get fed
- 1:57:48Speaker 8: an ad reel that, you know, you at least got
- 1:57:49Speaker 8: to watch.
- 1:57:50Speaker 7: Like, what do you watch on nfl.com on, on the.
- 1:57:53Speaker 5: Internet games or, you know, some highlights. Oh, 96.
- 1:57:56Speaker 7: When you're doing your 96 work.
- 1:57:57Speaker 8: I did do a 96 thing, which, uh, Yeah, we're
- 1:58:00Speaker 8: going to tease that a little bit here. We're going
- 1:58:02Speaker 8: to do a 96 podcast this year.
- 1:58:03Speaker 7: The old 96er.
- 1:58:05Speaker 8: PP's favorite season of all time, which I'm probably going
- 1:58:08Speaker 8: to say this a few times, but just real quick.
- 1:58:10Speaker 4: Quick.
- 1:58:10Speaker 5: I've said it three times already.
- 1:58:11Speaker 8: Why do I feel like a shot's coming? The irony
- 1:58:13Speaker 8: of Paul hates special teams yet. The biggest heartbreak of
- 1:58:18Speaker 8: his sports fan life was when the Patriots lost to
- 1:58:20Speaker 8: the Packers in the Super Bowl. And the only Super
- 1:58:23Speaker 8: Bowl in history where a special teams player was the
- 1:58:24Speaker 8: MVP of said Super Bowl. So that's why I think
- 1:58:27Speaker 8: we got to the root of Paul's special team hate.
- 1:58:30Speaker 5: You just can't forget Desmond Howard.
- 1:58:32Speaker 7: That's my worst Patriot loss. I had way more worse losses, sports-wise.
- 1:58:36Speaker 5: Oh, when you were playing.
- 1:58:38Speaker 3: Playing, other sports. That was my worst Patriot loss. What's
- 1:58:41Speaker 3: the worst, Paul, of your own personal? 86 Red Sox
- 1:58:42Speaker 3: is like.
- 1:58:44Speaker 15: Never.
- 1:58:45Speaker 7: Nothing will ever be worse than that.
- 1:58:47Speaker 5: Prime of life. Bill Buckner, where you had like the.
- 1:58:49Speaker 7: Up two runs with two outs and two strikes and
- 1:58:51Speaker 7: no one on. I mean, how can you get that?
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: You're right. That's a great point.
- 1:58:55Speaker 5: That was bad. I think 07. 86.
- 1:58:58Speaker 7: You remember it, Jack.
- 1:58:59Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:59:00Speaker 3: I was not even a thot. If you can't remember
- 1:59:03Speaker 3: all the details, Alex will fill you in.
- 1:59:04Speaker 12: Perfect.
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: Thanks, Alex.
- 1:59:09Speaker 5: 07 for me, that was pretty rough. That was pretty rough.
- 1:59:11Speaker 2: 07 was bad.
- 1:59:12Speaker 7: I mean, that was seven was bad.
- 1:59:14Speaker 8: I just remember thinking like, it can't be any worse.
- 1:59:16Speaker 8: Like you, you were, you lost one game and then
- 1:59:18Speaker 8: right at the end, like there's no worse situation that
- 1:59:20Speaker 8: you can ever possibly be in.
- 1:59:22Speaker 5: You're never going to get back to this point.
- 1:59:24Speaker 9: Like this, this is how spoiled I am as someone
- 1:59:27Speaker 9: born in the year 2000. I think the worst for
- 1:59:29Speaker 9: me is Bruins Panthers three, one lead.
- 1:59:31Speaker 5: You were born in 2000. Yeah.
- 1:59:31Speaker 2: Sorry. Yeah.
- 1:59:32Speaker 7: That was, that was a bad loss.
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: That was bad.
- 1:59:34Speaker 7: I would know. I was a little bit too old
- 1:59:36Speaker 7: to take that the way I took some of the
- 1:59:38Speaker 7: other ones. I was a senior in college.
- 1:59:41Speaker 3: I was a freshman in college when the 86 collapsed.
- 1:59:45Speaker 3: I was playing baseball, and there were so many guys
- 1:59:49Speaker 3: on the team that were from New York.
- 1:59:50Speaker 7: It was a huge thing going back and forth.
- 1:59:52Speaker 2: So that was it for me.
- 1:59:53Speaker 7: Maybe that was the last fight I've been in.
- 1:59:55Speaker 2: They're right there.
- 1:59:57Speaker 9: I was in college and, you know, especially when you
- 2:00:00Speaker 9: get a season like that at Bruins or Celtics season,
- 2:00:02Speaker 9: there are so many games and you find yourself, you watch,
- 2:00:04Speaker 9: like it's Red Sox season, you get attached. If you
- 2:00:06Speaker 9: watch a lot of them, the playoffs come around, you're like, okay,
- 2:00:08Speaker 9: I'm invested in this one. Like I was in it
- 2:00:10Speaker 9: this year and that was me with that Bruins season
- 2:00:12Speaker 9: and just.
- 2:00:13Speaker 7: That was a great Bruins team.
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: So good. And the way the Panthers conducted. I don't know.
- 2:00:18Speaker 7: I've got to calm down.
- 2:00:19Speaker 5: Maybe they'll even find a captain this year.
- 2:00:21Speaker 20: All right.
- 2:00:21Speaker 8: That's going to do it for this edition of Patriots
- 2:00:23Speaker 8: on Filter. We want to thank everybody who called in.
- 2:00:26Speaker 8: That was by far the most calls I've ever seen
- 2:00:28Speaker 8: rolling in. So we're glad we could give you guys
- 2:00:29Speaker 8: an opportunity to vent.
- 2:00:30Speaker 7: We just even got a couple of you on the air.
- 2:00:32Speaker 8: I got a couple that I didn't drop. But Patriots
- 2:00:35Speaker 8: are going to be back at it on Monday. We'll
- 2:00:37Speaker 8: have a little practice, a little locker room. We'll hear
- 2:00:38Speaker 8: back from Braves. And then we will be back on
- 2:00:41Speaker 8: Patriots on Filter on Tuesday.
- 2:00:42Speaker 2: Good job, Mike.
- 2:00:42Speaker 5: We'll see you then. Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for
- 2:00:47Speaker 5: tuning into the show.
- 2:00:48Speaker 36: If you really want to help us, make sure you
- 2:00:49Speaker 36: like us wherever you get your podcasts, like Apple Podcasts
- 2:00:52Speaker 36: or Spotify. Also, make sure you follow us on the
- 2:00:54Speaker 36: New England Patriots YouTube channel to see this show and
- 2:00:56Speaker 36: everything else that we do here at the Patriots.
- 2:00:58Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
