Transcript
- 0:00I gotta tell you, I enjoy our service is so unique.
- 0:24You know, to hear God's people give praise and prayer and being able to share that together
- 0:29as a family, it is a very unique opportunity and I'm so grateful and thankful.
- 0:38That being said, I want us to turn to Luke chapter 2.
- 0:41What's interesting is I was thinking through this week on the message, because there's
- 0:48a lot of Christmas messages you can pull out of scripture.
- 0:53This happens to be our songs, again, by the guiding of the Holy Spirit, which is amazing.
- 1:03Here we are talking about the glory of God and not letting distractions remove us from
- 1:08those truths.
- 1:12So let's pray.
- 1:14Ask God to guide the words that are coming out of my mouth for His honor and glory and
- 1:20that our hearts have been prepared to receive what He has for us today as we get through
- 1:27the rest of this service.
- 1:28Father, I want to thank you so much for your faithfulness and goodness.
- 1:32Thank you for your word.
- 1:34You are good.
- 1:36You are the God of all creation.
- 1:38You gave one way to salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:45And this is the beginning of the promise fulfilled, the way, the way by which you bring the good
- 1:55news to the whole world.
- 1:58So Lord, I pray as we go out into the world that we would be confident in the truth of
- 2:12Christ, the gospel, and that everyone that we would come in contact with, very similar,
- 2:18Lord, to the shepherds, that we would proclaim the good news.
- 2:23Lord, help us to sing aloud as the hosts of heaven sung, glory to God in the highest.
- 2:31May we be willing to scream from the rooftops to tell it on the mountain.
- 2:39I pray that you are honored and glorified, and Lord, help us to love you supremely.
- 2:46May the whole full counsel of your word be spoken today, and I pray, Lord, that your
- 2:52people's hearts have prepared themselves to receive the manna that you have given us for
- 2:59this day.
- 3:00Lord, we praise you and thank you in Jesus' name.
- 3:02Amen.
- 3:03Luke chapter 2, verse 8 through 21.
- 3:06And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their
- 3:12flock by night.
- 3:16And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.
- 3:24That is amazing.
- 3:27Now, Old Testament context would kind of show us some things here.
- 3:37Think about what happens when the glory of the Lord shows up.
- 3:47When in the Old Testament did they show up?
- 3:48So I want you to think about this statement, because this is God's glory, deserving to
- 3:55him and him alone.
- 3:57So let's keep reading.
- 4:02And they were filled with great fear, and the angel said to them, fear not, for behold
- 4:10I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
- 4:16For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior who is Christ the Lord.
- 4:25And this will be a sign for you, you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes and
- 4:31lying in a manger.
- 4:33And suddenly there was with the angels a multitude of the heavenly host.
- 4:39I want to read that again.
- 4:41And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of heavenly hosts praising God and saying,
- 4:51Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased.
- 5:00When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, let us
- 5:06go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known
- 5:15to us.
- 5:17Monkey wrench number two.
- 5:20I love monkey wrenches.
- 5:24We won't spend a lot of time on that, but I'm just saying.
- 5:27All right.
- 5:28Here we go.
- 5:29And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger.
- 5:35And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told to them concerning
- 5:40this child.
- 5:42And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them, but Mary treasured up
- 5:50all these things, pondering them in her heart.
- 5:55And the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen
- 6:03as it had been told to them.
- 6:10Shining story.
- 6:12Now many probably look at the movies and you guys have rehearsed this moment that there
- 6:20happens to be this one moment, a shining light, and in every movie I've ever watched there's
- 6:29angels speaking.
- 6:32But here in this particular reality of truth when you read, take the time, we see an angel.
- 6:43The question of the day is, is it an angel or the angel?
- 6:53I've done some research quite a bit on word study on this and the word and is not present.
- 7:01Anything enough.
- 7:03So the word ho, this that meaning the, is.
- 7:12So what's that mean?
- 7:14So let's look at the context of this.
- 7:17But I don't want you to miss the whole principle.
- 7:19The main part of this story is not this moment when the shepherds come face to face to the
- 7:26reality of the chief shepherd.
- 7:30It's this moment when they go as a result of the impact of the good news in their life.
- 7:40This is what happens when a heart is changed.
- 7:45That's the moment of the story.
- 7:50They come face to face with the savior of the world wrapped in swaddling clothes and
- 7:55what was told to them was so impactful that they go and they share this news with everyone.
- 8:05Why the shepherds?
- 8:06See, most people when they have important news to tell others, there's typically nothing
- 8:13to stop them from letting everyone they know about it.
- 8:19It's God we got to tell you.
- 8:22This is good news.
- 8:26Everybody's like this.
- 8:27I haven't met any person that's like, I got great news and I'm just going to keep it to
- 8:32myself.
- 8:33It's just in the heart of man I think.
- 8:38But when there is good news like this, like this news at this moment, many celebrate it
- 8:47and tell everyone about it, even strangers.
- 8:51That's what happens when you have good news, this kind of news.
- 8:56This is the greatest news of all time.
- 8:59This moment in world history was critical.
- 9:05This is a pinnacle moment and God has chosen to reveal the truth of this moment in this
- 9:14way.
- 9:15We have to pay attention to it.
- 9:18We can't miss the point of this moment.
- 9:21What we do?
- 9:22Why?
- 9:23Because we get wrapped up in the Christmas moment instead of wrapped up in the gospel
- 9:29moment.
- 9:31The announcement to all creation that the king was born and God himself had come to
- 9:39save his people.
- 9:42That's the announcement that they got from the angel and from the multitude of angels
- 9:49present.
- 9:52Glory to God in the highest.
- 9:55This promise that was made at the fall, I will put an enmity between you and the woman
- 10:01between her seed and your seed and he will crush your head but you will bruise his heel
- 10:06or he will bruise your head and you will bruise his heel depending on your translation.
- 10:12The reality of this moment has now been fulfilled.
- 10:17This is the savior himself, the God of all creation born and that the promise that this
- 10:22child would be born of a virgin has been completed.
- 10:27He's born and he's born wrapped in claws that you wrap your sheep in.
- 10:33Happened to be born in the city where sheep of sacrifice were brought.
- 10:43Happened to be born and laid in a trough, a manger which is actually a stone, youned
- 10:51out for water.
- 10:55That the God of everlasting water is laying in a manger who is also the rock of your salvation.
- 11:00It's not by coincidence it happens to be this particular manger.
- 11:08In a house, not a hotel, not a motel, an inn which is the bottom of a home where shepherds
- 11:18would live because they would bring their sheep in, protect them.
- 11:25Just happened to be that time of year it was safe for them to wander and go out into the
- 11:30fields at night.
- 11:33Interesting.
- 11:35Freedom, this is what I think, I want you to think about this proclamation.
- 11:42It's like freedom is at hand.
- 11:44The promised Messiah who has come to set you free is here.
- 11:52The promise has been fulfilled and the angels say go and find the child wrapped in swaddling
- 11:58clothes.
- 11:59Come and see the same response that Jesus has with his disciples when he meets them
- 12:04for the first time.
- 12:05Come and see.
- 12:06Where are you staying?
- 12:08Come and see.
- 12:09Have you ever noticed that every gospel moment throughout scripture is a come and see moment?
- 12:17Why the shepherds?
- 12:21Because the chief shepherd had come to the shepherds.
- 12:27We read that last week, did we not?
- 12:30And Jesus prayed for his disciples that the father would keep shepherd, guard, keep watch
- 12:42over his people.
- 12:43Do you see the heart of Jesus here?
- 12:46It's the constant shepherding moment.
- 12:50How can we miss this moment in the scripture?
- 12:54Because we're wrapped up in the story of Christmas.
- 12:58We're wrapped up in the excitement of the moment and the Hollywood of this time of year
- 13:09that we miss some very important things.
- 13:12So I want you to kind of think through this.
- 13:14This is going to be a little bit challenging.
- 13:20Principle number one.
- 13:21When God gives good news, it is worthy of the highest exaltation.
- 13:29When God gives good news, it is worthy of the highest exaltation.
- 13:33Now I want you to get this.
- 13:35The greatest gift given to mankind is worthy of all creation and all the heavenly host
- 13:43to sing praises.
- 13:46The question is, who delivered this good news?
- 13:54Verse eight, we're going to go through each verse again.
- 13:57And in the same region, there were shepherds out in the field keeping watch over their
- 14:03flock by night.
- 14:05Same word in John 17, just letting you know.
- 14:10And here it says, an angel of the Lord appeared to them.
- 14:19Is it an angel or is it the angel?
- 14:28Because every time an angel shows up, they declare who they are to man.
- 14:37But any time in the scripture you see the angel of the Lord appeared to them, it's
- 14:46expected that they know.
- 14:49And the response that these shepherds have is the same response to everyone who comes
- 14:57face to face with a theophany response.
- 15:06I want you to think about this.
- 15:08Who better than to proclaim the good news than maybe, just maybe, the God of all creation?
- 15:22I'm going to give you more as we think through this process.
- 15:26And this is quite different.
- 15:27I trust me, I know.
- 15:29It says, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.
- 15:33The glory of what?
- 15:36Ah, how could we miss that?
- 15:41Everybody thinks this, oh, the glory of the Lord is just a shining light.
- 15:44No, this is the glory of God there.
- 15:50This is not the glory of the angelic beings.
- 15:53This is the glory of the Lord.
- 15:58This is an important moment, so important that when he enters into world history, the
- 16:07proclamation of himself is done with a purposeful intent.
- 16:14God is purposefully attentive in what he's about to do here.
- 16:21Wow.
- 16:25What a beautiful day.
- 16:28And the scripture says, and they were filled with great fear.
- 16:32Now, if you remember, the reason why I think people get this mixed up a little bit is because
- 16:39there's this moment that Mary asks when Gabriel shows up.
- 16:44And we know it's Gabriel because God actually says, hey.
- 16:49I mean, Gabriel says, hey.
- 16:50I'm like, I'm Gabriel.
- 16:53And it's so shocking that she's like afraid.
- 16:59And he says, Mary, don't be afraid.
- 17:02It's okay.
- 17:04Don't be afraid, Mary.
- 17:07But here, I want you to notice what verse 10 says.
- 17:14And the angel said to them, fear not.
- 17:20Doesn't that sound like the Lord?
- 17:22Isn't that what he says to his disciples?
- 17:25Fear not, I'm with you.
- 17:29It's okay.
- 17:31They're so afraid, greatly afraid, that the angel said to them, now understand this word
- 17:37angel, and this is where I think a lot of people get it messed up, is the word angelos,
- 17:42or ang-el-os, depending on how good your Greek is.
- 17:47And that word literally just means messenger.
- 17:51That's all it means.
- 17:54Okay?
- 17:56And this is what the messenger says, fear not, behold, I bring you good news of great
- 18:02joy that will be for all the people.
- 18:08For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior who is Christ the Lord.
- 18:13And you're probably going to ask, well, how can it be Jesus if Jesus is born?
- 18:18Well, I never said it was Jesus, because if you read the story in Genesis 19, Abraham
- 18:30is confronted with a theophany, where the persons of God stand before him, and he has
- 18:40a wonderful conversation.
- 18:42Abraham, go do what you said.
- 18:47The scripture says, and they said, do as you said.
- 18:51Go get my food.
- 18:52We'll sit down, we'll have a nice little conversation.
- 18:57There are moments throughout world history, biblical history, when a theophany appears.
- 19:05Moses in the burning bush.
- 19:09Is that not an important news?
- 19:12Why would God send an angel there?
- 19:16How come every time there's an important message that has to be spoken to a people, God shows
- 19:23up?
- 19:26Very interesting.
- 19:28Just some thoughts to think about as you guys are thinking through the scripture, and as
- 19:31you're thinking about Christmas, how important this moment in world history is.
- 19:36Out of all of the things we know, according to 1 Corinthians chapter 15, what the most
- 19:42important thing is.
- 19:44What is it?
- 19:45The gospel.
- 19:50First Corinthians 15 verses 1 through 4, we know.
- 19:55Why would God not do this with the shepherds too?
- 19:58Why would he change?
- 20:03Verse 11, he says, for unto you was born this day in the city David, a savior who is Christ
- 20:10the Lord.
- 20:12Would this angelic, this messenger be a theophany?
- 20:23And this is what it says, and this will be a sign for you, you will find a baby wrapped
- 20:29in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.
- 20:33What an amazing moment.
- 20:35Now granted, I think there are many that would say, well, that doesn't kind of fit the whole
- 20:41story.
- 20:42But remember, you're taking a story that is found in Matthew and in Luke only.
- 20:51And you're combining all that information to come to one conclusion.
- 20:56When if you read chapter 2 of Luke, and the clarity by which it is spoken, you clearly
- 21:02start to see there's a much bigger important message here.
- 21:08Principle number 2.
- 21:09So the praise and song that changed everything, this one declaration in verse 14, when God
- 21:17keeps his promises, the whole world knows about it.
- 21:22And suddenly there with the angel, with the messenger, a multitude of heavenly hosts praising
- 21:36God and saying, glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace among those whom he is
- 21:45pleased.
- 21:46You ever notice this when you've read this, or have we have always assumed that he's just
- 21:53one angel among many?
- 21:56Or could this be Gabriel?
- 22:00I don't know if the language implies that.
- 22:03But interesting enough, if it is a theophany, or if it's not a theophany, it doesn't change
- 22:10the impact of the reality of what happens here.
- 22:15I'm just very careful not to give God's glory away, which belongs to him and him alone.
- 22:23Teaching the full counsel of God is very important.
- 22:28Why is this word, glory to God in the highest and on earth, peace among those whom he is
- 22:34pleased?
- 22:37Very important statement here first.
- 22:39To God and God alone be glory.
- 22:43That's what he's saying here.
- 22:45That's what the multitude of heavenly hosts are praising God, singing here.
- 22:50Glory to God in the highest.
- 22:52Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty.
- 22:57This is what he's saying here.
- 22:59The God of all creation deserves glory.
- 23:03Only he alone who is the El Shaddai, the Adonai, he alone deserves the glory.
- 23:14But what have we done during Christmas?
- 23:17We have removed the glory of God from this moment because we get wrapped up and too busy
- 23:23with the stuff that's around us that we forget who this is really all about.
- 23:33And the glory of God, he brings upon the earth by declaring peace among those with whom he
- 23:45is pleased.
- 23:48Now some translations would say peace on earth and goodwill to men.
- 23:57No, it's actually peace on earth and among those whom he is pleased.
- 24:06Who is he pleased?
- 24:09Who is he pleased with?
- 24:10His people.
- 24:12Why did he come to the shepherds?
- 24:17They're his people.
- 24:21There is people.
- 24:24Principle number three, there is only one response to be made at this moment.
- 24:29That is go tell it on a mountain and shout it from the rooftops.
- 24:33Look at what the shepherds do.
- 24:37When verse 15 through 20, when the angels went away.
- 24:43This is one of the reasons why many would teach or declare that this particular angel,
- 24:52this messenger who came and shared this news has to be an angel.
- 24:58Because this word here, when the angelos went away from them into heaven.
- 25:10Could it be multiple?
- 25:11It is multiple when you read the previous verses.
- 25:16So they imply that maybe this is them.
- 25:19Or could it be the theophany?
- 25:22Or could it be just Gabriel among many other angels?
- 25:27I'm going to let you dig this out a little bit.
- 25:32I know where I stand on it.
- 25:34Why?
- 25:36Because God and God alone deserves all the glory at this moment.
- 25:41And I'm not willing to share his glory with anyone else.
- 25:44The shepherds said to one another, let us go over to Bethlehem and see the thing that
- 25:50has happened which the Lord has made known to us.
- 25:59This is very clear in the language here.
- 26:03This is not which the angels have made known to us.
- 26:07This is which the Lord has made known to us.
- 26:10Man, we got this news from God.
- 26:13We need to go.
- 26:15Let's prove this out.
- 26:18Let's go see.
- 26:22Verse 16, and they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the baby lying in a manger,
- 26:31just as he had said.
- 26:34And when they saw it, they made known the same that had been told to them concerning
- 26:39this child.
- 26:41And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
- 26:45Now I want you to get this moment because now it makes this one statement in verse 19
- 26:52so much more impactful.
- 26:58Because if this was some type of maybe angelic moment, she's already had one of those.
- 27:09But if this is Jesus or this is the Holy Spirit or if this is God the Father, if this is a
- 27:17theophany, wouldn't it make Mary think a little bit deeper?
- 27:23And that's what verse 19 says.
- 27:25These little verses are purposeful.
- 27:29God is amazing in His intent in this moment, but Mary treasured up all these things, pondering
- 27:40them in her heart.
- 27:44Wow.
- 27:49She was in awe.
- 27:53That the God of all creation, she birthed and is laying right there.
- 28:00And yet could the God of all creation just told these shepherds to go and see?
- 28:12What a treasure of truth.
- 28:15What a treasure.
- 28:19Could it just be?
- 28:24Verse 20, and the shepherds returned as a result of all that they experienced.
- 28:30Look what it says, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen as
- 28:37it had been told to them.
- 28:43What do you think a shepherd's going to go and do?
- 28:45He's going to go tell everybody this is the impact of the gospel, the reality of the living
- 28:51coming in contact with the living God.
- 28:55Could this be?
- 28:58Could this be that amazing moment?
- 29:00And trust me, I was praying.
- 29:03I'm like, Lord, are we really going to talk about this?
- 29:08And I was really thinking about a different part of the, it didn't go that way.
- 29:14And I'm okay with that.
- 29:15Because what a powerful, amazing, omnipresent God we have.
- 29:24Do we miss the omnipresence of the holy God of all creation in this moment?
- 29:34Do we really think that the triune God who was present at creation, who had chased away
- 29:42the darkness, the or, when the or, which is known as the foes in the New Testament, when
- 29:52the foes comes into his creation, that the father and the Holy Spirit wouldn't be present?
- 29:58If he was present creating the world, I have to assume he might just be present here too.
- 30:07And the light of all creation enters into man's human world to chase away the darkness
- 30:16of your sin.
- 30:19Is it not God's right and responsibility to his promise to proclaim that for himself?
- 30:26I believe so.
- 30:29I believe so.
- 30:32I know this is quite different.
- 30:35But God's glory is too important.
- 30:39And I was like, Lord, this is a heavy truth.
- 30:47My glory, it's his glory, belongs to no one but him.
- 30:53I'm okay with that.
- 30:54So as you think about this Christmas day, this Christmas Eve, as you go into tomorrow
- 31:02celebrating the first coming of our Lord God, our King, and how he has chosen in all creation
- 31:11to proclaim to the creation of the world, I am here, glory to God in the highest.
- 31:17I am the peace giver.
- 31:20The Prince of Peace has entered the world.
- 31:24I want you to think about that.
- 31:26Could this be?
- 31:30Could this just be the angel of the Lord and not an angel of the Lord?
- 31:40I would contend in my opinion that Old Testament context and New Testament context of the presence
- 31:50of the word of God is clear.
- 31:54The hard part is, are we willing to submit to it?
- 32:02I struggled with that.
- 32:05This changes a lot in how I look at God.
- 32:10The only thing I can do in my heart is prostrate before him in awe and wonder and say to him,
- 32:24glory to God in the highest and peace among those whom he has pleased.
- 32:32Father, I want to thank you for this amazing story, the reality of the impact of the gospel
- 32:40and the life of these shepherds.
- 32:41This moment in all creation, this one moment in world history, Lord, you have come in and
- 32:48declared your presence among your people that you have chosen through your purpose and plan
- 32:57and promise to tabernacle among your people.
- 33:01There is no one else in all of creation who deserves that proclamation and truth but you.
- 33:09Lord, I pray that we reflect on the deepness of the truth of this intentional moment in
- 33:19world history.
- 33:23When light came into the world and darkness has not understood it, but to those who call
- 33:33on you, to those whom you have saved, you have given us the right to be called children
- 33:47of God.
- 33:48We thank you and praise you.
- 33:49In Jesus' name, amen.
