- 0:02Speaker 1: Hey, it's FT.
- 0:03Speaker 2: FT every single day, all offseason long. And that includes
- 0:07Speaker 2: the lockout for those asking.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Yes, we'll be here. We'll be chilling.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Please subscribe to the channel if you're watching on YouTube
- 0:14Speaker 2: and on the podcast platforms.
- 0:16Speaker 3: Leave us a rating or a review. That would be great, too.
- 0:19Speaker 3: But there's the subscribe button. Thank you. Key dates. So
- 0:23Speaker 3: next week, the awards get announced, right? We know that.
- 0:26Speaker 2: You'll get Rookie of the Year, Psy, MVP, the reliever
- 0:30Speaker 2: of the year. first year that we're officially getting that
- 0:32Speaker 2: from the BBWA excited about that. The writers are the
- 0:37Speaker 2: awards that people care about and we will get the
- 0:40Speaker 2: hall of fame class, um, announced on November 16th.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Is that what it is?
- 0:47Speaker 2: Or no, they usually announce it or that's the 27 ballot.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Then the contemporary ballot is in December during the winter
- 0:56Speaker 2: meetings that won't happen. Um, AJ, this is interesting. The
- 1:00Speaker 2: GM meetings are next week. So we should get some
- 1:03Speaker 2: news out of the GM meetings, not just lockout wise,
- 1:05Speaker 2: but every GM's there. So we'll get a little more
- 1:07Speaker 2: insight on how much of a frenzy this is going
- 1:09Speaker 2: to be in the next few weeks. And then we
- 1:11Speaker 2: have the owners meetings in New York in mid-November, the
- 1:16Speaker 2: 17th to the 19th. That will hold a little bit
- 1:19Speaker 2: more weight. Usually we don't really cover that, but I
- 1:22Speaker 2: think we're going to cover that a little bit more
- 1:23Speaker 2: than we usually do.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:27Speaker 4: I mean, these are big dates coming up. whether you're
- 1:31Speaker 4: into the award shows, whether you're into seeing GMs and
- 1:34Speaker 4: what they're all going to sit in a room and
- 1:36Speaker 4: talk about trades they're going to execute. And then the
- 1:39Speaker 4: owners meetings are going to sit there and say, well,
- 1:41Speaker 4: I'm giving you $ 100 million. You're not spending it correctly,
- 1:44Speaker 4: so let's blame the players. Yeah, that's kind of the
- 1:48Speaker 4: dates that are going to happen. The Hall of Fame
- 1:51Speaker 4: ballot will be cool to see who's on there. I
- 1:53Speaker 4: think we have a pretty good idea who's on there,
- 1:55Speaker 4: who's going to make it. Um, first, I don't know
- 1:57Speaker 4: if there's any first timers that have a chance. I
- 1:59Speaker 4: haven't really dug into it. And then, um, after that,
- 2:02Speaker 4: it's all going to be about who gets tendered and
- 2:05Speaker 4: who can sign before December 1st, December 1st is the
- 2:07Speaker 4: key date and we'll see what happens.
- 2:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 3: There's a tender deadline on the 20th too. Speaking of tenders,
- 2:14Speaker 3: which is, which is huge.
- 2:16Speaker 6: You're tender, but I would say I want to be
- 2:19Speaker 6: in on the owner's meeting. I want to know what
- 2:21Speaker 6: it's like. I want to know what it's like to
- 2:23Speaker 6: be in the room with guys, uh, 30 groups of
- 2:28Speaker 6: people that I want to hear what they have to say.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I do. I want to hear.
- 2:32Speaker 6: So if there's an invite, you guys, you can extend
- 2:36Speaker 6: an invite out to me. I will show up if
- 2:38Speaker 6: you invite me.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Yeah. If you have a billion dollars, you have a chance. Otherwise, no.
- 2:44Speaker 2: There's an interesting layer to that owner's meeting with the
- 2:48Speaker 2: Angels too. We'll get to that later on. Let's hit
- 2:51Speaker 2: free agency. Today we discuss the Freddie Peralta market. Now,
- 2:59Speaker 2: some of the publications that cover the sport have put
- 3:02Speaker 2: out projections. Tim Britton is thinking three years, 84 million
- 3:06Speaker 2: bucks for Freddie. Kylie McDaniel came out with his report
- 3:11Speaker 2: the other day, or his projections, not a report. Four years,
- 3:14Speaker 2: $ 96 million. So a little bit more for Freddie on
- 3:19Speaker 2: that one. Remember, not eligible for a qualifying offer. That's
- 3:22Speaker 2: why you didn't get one. You're not eligible if you
- 3:24Speaker 2: get traded during the season. That's what happened with Freddie.
- 3:27Speaker 2: That's a blessing for Freddie AJ, because it usually just
- 3:31Speaker 2: knocks some money off. And some teams even knock off
- 3:34Speaker 2: that list. If they're obsessed with their draft pick over
- 3:37Speaker 2: the particular player, right? It doesn't necessarily affect the guy.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Usually that's five, seven year plus kind of contract, but
- 3:43Speaker 2: Freddie's looking most likely at three or four. According to
- 3:46Speaker 2: these projections, I saw a couple other projections that had
- 3:48Speaker 2: them hitting the low to mid hundreds, like between a
- 3:52Speaker 2: hundred and 125. So, Thoughts, first of all, on Freddie's value,
- 3:56Speaker 2: and then we can come up with some teams and
- 3:59Speaker 2: some free agent comps, too.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Well, Freddie's value was immensely improved once he went to
- 4:03Speaker 4: the Rays. Whatever the Mets did to him wasn't good.
- 4:06Speaker 4: Freddie's value was immensely improved, and then the way he
- 4:08Speaker 4: pitched in the postseason, he was really good in the postseason,
- 4:10Speaker 4: so teams are going to look at it. And the
- 4:12Speaker 4: one thing about Freddie Peralta that he does is he
- 4:13Speaker 4: makes his starts. He always makes his starts. Whether they're
- 4:16Speaker 4: good or bad, he makes all his starts. And I
- 4:20Speaker 4: know he's turning 31, but I think he could find
- 4:23Speaker 4: a five-year deal. I think he can find a team
- 4:25Speaker 4: that will give him a five-year deal. I really do.
- 4:27Speaker 4: I know it's three and four years that most people
- 4:29Speaker 4: are going with, but I really believe there will be
- 4:31Speaker 4: a team out there that will say, ah, he hasn't
- 4:33Speaker 4: turned 31 yet. He won't turn 31 until the next season.
- 4:37Speaker 4: We can figure out a way to keep him going
- 4:39Speaker 4: for five years, and I think he'll figure out a
- 4:41Speaker 4: way to get five years. Now, what that number will be, 5-120, 5-110, 5-125,
- 4:47Speaker 4: Whatever it is, but Freddie's valuable in the clubhouse. Freddie
- 4:49Speaker 4: takes the ball every time, good or bad, and his
- 4:54Speaker 4: numbers vastly improved once he got around someone that could
- 4:56Speaker 4: figure out how to make him pitch well. So I
- 4:57Speaker 4: think Freddie should get a five-year deal somewhere. I don't
- 5:00Speaker 4: know where that's going to be, but he should get one.
- 5:03Speaker 1: I agree.
- 5:03Speaker 6: The three- and four-year projections, I wasn't 100%. It just
- 5:07Speaker 6: felt low to me because of the fact that he
- 5:10Speaker 6: makes his starts. There's plenty of guys that, you would say, okay,
- 5:16Speaker 6: they're kind of just average pitchers, but they make their
- 5:18Speaker 6: starts for the previous five seasons before free agency, and
- 5:22Speaker 6: they go ahead and they get a nice, very lucrative contract.
- 5:27Speaker 6: Freddie's an above average pitcher.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I get it.
- 5:30Speaker 6: He had a down year. New York Mets fans would
- 5:31Speaker 6: be like, no chance. I would never want to see
- 5:34Speaker 6: this guy on the mound again. I understand that, but
- 5:38Speaker 6: he didn't just turn it around for three games in Tampa.
- 5:40Speaker 6: He turned it around for 10 plus straight quality starts.
- 5:45Speaker 6: So his strikeouts are down. That's why I don't think
- 5:47Speaker 6: he's going to be $ 150 million pitcher, but I think
- 5:50Speaker 6: he's over a hundred and I agree with AJ. It'll be,
- 5:54Speaker 6: it'll be five years unless the team wants to just
- 5:56Speaker 6: make it four, but throw until 36 for a durable pitcher.
- 6:00Speaker 1: I don't think that that long in this day and age.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Do you guys believe in the changes based on the
- 6:09Speaker 2: prior track record? Do you look at the Met situation
- 6:12Speaker 2: as a blip? and just say whatever. Yeah, you both agree?
- 6:16Speaker 4: Because we saw him do it for extended starts, and
- 6:19Speaker 4: someone said something to him, and maybe he's learned from now,
- 6:21Speaker 4: and he doesn't go back to what he was doing.
- 6:23Speaker 4: I mean, it was all about extension, getting down the mound,
- 6:26Speaker 4: all those things that Freddie was so great at and
- 6:28Speaker 4: he was known for before he went to the Mets.
- 6:29Speaker 4: So I don't know what the Mets told him, but
- 6:32Speaker 4: whatever it was, it went right. And when he went
- 6:34Speaker 4: to the Rays, they were like, hey, go back to
- 6:35Speaker 4: being what you did. And what he did was be
- 6:38Speaker 4: a really good pitcher.
- 6:43Speaker 3: E.K.
- 6:45Speaker 6: I couldn't say anything else. I don't know what it was.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Whatever it was with the Mets, it is on Freddie.
- 6:52Speaker 6: It's not on the Mets saying, like, there aren't coaches
- 6:55Speaker 6: who are like, well, if you don't do this. Like,
- 6:57Speaker 6: Freddie was going to be one of the guys. He
- 6:59Speaker 6: was going to be the guy in their rotation.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I get it.
- 7:03Speaker 6: McLean was, you know, the lead guy in their rotation.
- 7:07Speaker 6: But Freddie was a nice 1A. in that rotation. And
- 7:11Speaker 6: so it's not like they're coming in and saying, you
- 7:12Speaker 6: got to change everything, whatever it was, Freddie's part of that.
- 7:17Speaker 6: And Freddie was also part of the change in Tampa.
- 7:20Speaker 6: So I, I completely agree. I don't think I, I,
- 7:25Speaker 6: I am leery sometimes of people who rebuild their value
- 7:29Speaker 6: and then they go to free agency and they expect
- 7:30Speaker 6: a certain amount. I don't think that's the case with Freddie.
- 7:33Speaker 6: Look at his track record. A lot of consistent years
- 7:37Speaker 6: of consistent amount of starts.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Would you guys rather have him or Michael King for
- 7:44Speaker 2: the next three or four years? You've got to sign
- 7:48Speaker 2: a contract with one of these guys. They're the same age.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Let's call it three, just so we don't even worry
- 7:54Speaker 3: too much about the long, long term. Three years.
- 7:57Speaker 2: You can have each of them for three years, call it.
- 8:00Speaker 2: We'll even give them a little more on their AAB.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Three years, 90. It's almost split in here because we've
- 8:07Speaker 2: got Britain at 384.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Kylie at 496. Let's say he gets a higher AAV.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Three years, 90. Oh, look at that.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Pretty comp board with King and Peralta on their regular
- 8:17Speaker 2: season stats now. Remember, both of them pitched really well
- 8:20Speaker 2: in the postseason. I know Freddie had the one blip
- 8:23Speaker 2: in the World Series, and King was great with less
- 8:26Speaker 2: innings to work with. AJ, I'm giving you three years,
- 8:29Speaker 2: 90 million bucks for your team that needs a starter.
- 8:32Speaker 3: Which one do you want?
- 8:34Speaker 4: Freddie Peralta. Because he's going to give me 30 starts
- 8:38Speaker 4: a year. Because he's going to give me 30 starts
- 8:40Speaker 4: a year.
- 8:40Speaker 1: That's it.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Michael King is really good when he's out there, but
- 8:45Speaker 4: he's not out there enough for me. He was this year,
- 8:47Speaker 4: but in years past, he hasn't been out there enough.
- 8:49Speaker 4: I'm taking Freddy Peralta. I'm taking my 30 starts, and
- 8:52Speaker 4: I'm saying Freddy will figure it out. Plus, he has
- 8:55Speaker 4: a track record of doing really well in different markets
- 8:59Speaker 4: other than New York. Obviously, Milwaukee, Tampa, he's done well in.
- 9:03Speaker 4: He's pitched in the relief. He's pitched in big games.
- 9:06Speaker 4: He's pitched in the World Series. He's pitched in playoff games.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Not that Michael King hasn't. I just feel like Freddie
- 9:12Speaker 4: Peralta has an ability. And again, I don't know Michael
- 9:15Speaker 4: King that well, and I know Freddie a little bit
- 9:16Speaker 4: from the time he's on here. Everything we've heard about
- 9:19Speaker 4: Freddie is he's unbelievable in the clubhouse. Not that Michael
- 9:21Speaker 4: King isn't, but Freddie Peralta's value also is off the field.
- 9:25Speaker 4: I mean, we heard about him having a meeting with
- 9:26Speaker 4: Soto and Lindor. He set it up in the Mets.
- 9:29Speaker 4: I mean, it didn't work out. They still weren't very good,
- 9:31Speaker 4: but At least Freddie tried, right? We heard about how
- 9:33Speaker 4: much everyone loved him in Milwaukee. We heard about guys
- 9:36Speaker 4: in Tampa loving him. So for me, I think Michael
- 9:39Speaker 4: King is really good. But if I'm going for a guy,
- 9:42Speaker 4: I want the guy who gives me the starts all
- 9:43Speaker 4: the time.
- 9:47Speaker 6: I mean, you presented this to Scott and I, two
- 9:50Speaker 6: guys that I saw at the genesis of their career,
- 9:52Speaker 6: Freddie P's first year in 18. Michael King, I caught
- 9:57Speaker 6: almost all of his starts in AAA.
- 9:59Speaker 1: One of the most... prepared guys.
- 10:01Speaker 6: I've heard it's the exact same way when he's in
- 10:03Speaker 6: the big leagues. Freddie P, very well prepared, understands what
- 10:09Speaker 6: he has to do or needs to do. And they're
- 10:12Speaker 6: both incredible clubhouse guys. Like both guys that you're getting
- 10:16Speaker 6: three years of not only just their quality pitching, but
- 10:19Speaker 6: the fact that you have a leader in the clubhouse.
- 10:21Speaker 6: You have a leader in, not necessarily in the clubhouse,
- 10:23Speaker 6: but a leader in the pitching staff. Somebody that's like
- 10:26Speaker 6: young guys can watch and grow from, which is why
- 10:30Speaker 6: I loved, excuse me, why I loved Freddie P going
- 10:33Speaker 6: over to New York, you know, with the younger pitchers
- 10:36Speaker 6: that they had on that staff.
- 10:38Speaker 1: I have to lean towards Freddie P.
- 10:40Speaker 6: And I have to lean towards Freddie P because of
- 10:44Speaker 6: what AJ said, the health. And also the fact that
- 10:47Speaker 6: Michael King, while he stayed healthy this year, has been
- 10:51Speaker 6: a strikeout guy. And I know Freddie's strikeouts have been
- 10:55Speaker 6: down also this year. But Michael King's drop in strikeouts
- 11:00Speaker 6: to keep his longevity and health this year may have
- 11:04Speaker 6: been a little bit of a give and take. So
- 11:07Speaker 6: I'm splitting hairs. I don't think either team is getting...
- 11:10Speaker 6: A bad player, but I'm taking Freddie P.
- 11:13Speaker 2: What do you mean by dropping Ks? And I'll list this.
- 11:17Speaker 2: The K rate did drop, but the velocity was actually
- 11:19Speaker 2: up a tick. Yes, the ground balls were up. So
- 11:21Speaker 2: you're saying just a little more going after the contact
- 11:25Speaker 2: to get the outs. Do you think that was an
- 11:27Speaker 2: implied strategy versus him just not actually striking out as
- 11:30Speaker 2: many batters? He was down to 21% in 2026. A
- 11:32Speaker 2: couple of years ago, he was at 28% in his
- 11:33Speaker 2: first full year as a starter.
- 11:38Speaker 6: Because you have an injury, yes, the velocity might come back,
- 11:42Speaker 6: but is the stuff still there? Again, I'm splitting hairs.
- 11:46Speaker 6: That punch out takes a little bit extra. Maybe he's
- 11:49Speaker 6: just getting young. Maybe he's just getting smarter with his
- 11:52Speaker 6: old age. The fact that he gets an opportunity to
- 11:55Speaker 6: go deeper into games.
- 11:56Speaker 1: He had more innings. He made all his starts.
- 12:00Speaker 6: The best way to do that is to not have
- 12:02Speaker 6: as stressful innings and have, you know, Always go for
- 12:05Speaker 6: the strikeout, which is going to cause your pitch count
- 12:07Speaker 6: to go up and not be able to make as
- 12:09Speaker 6: deep a run into each start. But also, you know,
- 12:12Speaker 6: maybe he felt like that was wearing on him a
- 12:15Speaker 6: little bit. I think there is also a world where
- 12:19Speaker 6: you're getting a year younger Freddie P than Michael King.
- 12:24Speaker 6: Michael King will be 32 come into this next season.
- 12:29Speaker 6: Freddie P will be 31. They're almost exactly a year apart.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Clean sweep. So here's the thing.
- 12:39Speaker 2: Right now, I have one playoff game I need to win.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I'm giving King the edge. It's very slight, though.
- 12:44Speaker 1: That's a different question.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 12:48Speaker 2: That's why I'm saying the answer, though, is the same
- 12:50Speaker 2: as you guys. I think when it comes to the
- 12:52Speaker 2: full season, the durability, all of that, Freddie is an
- 12:56Speaker 2: easy win on that one. And I know some might
- 12:59Speaker 2: look at the mileage. That used to be a game like, oh,
- 13:01Speaker 2: this guy doesn't have much mileage on his arm. Remember
- 13:04Speaker 2: Jeff Samarja?
- 13:05Speaker 1: Like, oh, look.
- 13:06Speaker 3: He's a starter now. He doesn't have much mileage.
- 13:07Speaker 2: But if you have an injury past, that is the
- 13:09Speaker 2: number one indicator of injury future. And I'm not saying
- 13:13Speaker 2: King's going to be hurt, but the percentage chance that
- 13:15Speaker 2: he's going to be hurt is higher than Freddie.
- 13:16Speaker 3: That's just what it looks like. So I'm with you guys.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I'll go Freddie on that one too. And yeah, I
- 13:23Speaker 3: do think that the projections are going to get beaten here.
- 13:26Speaker 3: I even said 390. I think that we're going to
- 13:28Speaker 3: get to the hundreds or at least one of these guys,
- 13:31Speaker 3: if not both. And here's why.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And this is the way that we cap off this segment. AJ,
- 13:36Speaker 2: when it comes to teams that are fit, I think
- 13:39Speaker 2: any team that's involved in Scooble or even thinking that
- 13:42Speaker 2: Scooble is interesting, but they can't pay at the 300,
- 13:45Speaker 2: 400 level goes to the next rung and tier. And
- 13:50Speaker 2: it includes King and Peralta. So in that case, I
- 13:54Speaker 2: think you're going to have five to 10 teams interested
- 13:57Speaker 2: at this level. And these are guys that can start
- 14:00Speaker 2: a playoff game for you in game one or two.
- 14:03Speaker 2: So for me, when you combine all of that, I
- 14:05Speaker 2: think they're, my guess is they're probably going to have
- 14:08Speaker 2: a bunch of three-year offers and maybe one team does four,
- 14:11Speaker 2: lowers the AAV a little bit and ends up at
- 14:13Speaker 2: like 4-1-10 or something like that. And it goes to,
- 14:16Speaker 2: you know, whoever's second place, third place, fourth place, Cubs, Padres, Mets,
- 14:21Speaker 2: et cetera, whoever doesn't get Scooble.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Every team should be in on these two guys. They're
- 14:26Speaker 4: not so expensive. They're not Derek Scooble. There should be
- 14:28Speaker 4: 30 teams in on these guys. These guys aren't breaking
- 14:31Speaker 4: the bank. They're not the, 400, 300, 400 million dollar guy.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Every team. 29 teams should be in on Freddie Peralta
- 14:38Speaker 4: and Michael King. Sorry. All 30 teams should be in
- 14:40Speaker 4: on these two guys. They're not overpriced and they're not
- 14:43Speaker 4: out of the realm of any team's payroll if they
- 14:46Speaker 4: really want to win.
- 14:49Speaker 6: I mean, I don't think there's an amount of money
- 14:52Speaker 6: for either one of them to go there, but Sacramento.
- 14:55Speaker 6: To me, when you're talking about a pitcher under 150 million,
- 14:58Speaker 6: you're talking about a pitcher that you're going to take
- 15:01Speaker 6: into the new stadium with this lineup, I think Sacramento
- 15:07Speaker 6: needs to overpay. I think even to another end of
- 15:10Speaker 6: the spectrum, the Phillies could always use another guy. For
- 15:14Speaker 6: $ 100 million, how are you allotting that money in a
- 15:18Speaker 6: better way than these two? And my last is, let's
- 15:21Speaker 6: say the Cubs do go after Tarek Skubal. Let's say
- 15:24Speaker 6: we have $ 350 million that we're willing to put. We
- 15:27Speaker 6: lose to whoever, the Dodgers or the Mets or whoever
- 15:30Speaker 6: gets Scooble.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Why not get both?
- 15:34Speaker 6: You're going to spend less money. You have an absolute
- 15:37Speaker 6: crater of a hole in the rotation. And now you couple,
- 15:42Speaker 6: if not one, both of these guys with steel and portent. Like,
- 15:49Speaker 6: I just think it would be Very few times do
- 15:55Speaker 6: you have two free agent pitchers go to the same team.
- 16:00Speaker 6: I feel like this could be a chance.
- 16:02Speaker 3: Yep.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I think Atlanta's a big player for this. First of all,
- 16:05Speaker 2: Sacramento can't happen unless they overpay beyond. Like another year,
- 16:09Speaker 2: highest A, B. You've got to wait until you're in
- 16:12Speaker 2: Vegas or guys are just going to say no in
- 16:14Speaker 2: my mind. But I like the idea. I think Atlanta's
- 16:16Speaker 2: got to get a starter. I think you've got to
- 16:18Speaker 2: bring Molly back and then get a starter so that
- 16:20Speaker 2: you feel like you're going into the season with guys
- 16:22Speaker 2: that can pitch playoff games for you. It's too much
- 16:25Speaker 2: of waiting for a group of four to five that
- 16:27Speaker 2: have had really long-term injuries at this point.
- 16:32Speaker 3: The Red Sox brought in a big bopper. His name's
- 16:35Speaker 3: Shelly Duncan. Never heard of him.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Used to be a big dude in the big leagues
- 16:40Speaker 2: hitting some homers for a minute. and then has the
- 16:43Speaker 2: famous dad, Dave Duncan, who worked on the Cardinals staff
- 16:45Speaker 2: for a long time as their pitching coach, working with
- 16:47Speaker 2: Tony LaRusso.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Anyway, he was hired to the Red Sox. We don't
- 16:50Speaker 3: have the job yet. That's unique.
- 16:52Speaker 2: What is the role? I guess they just didn't announce
- 16:55Speaker 2: it yet, but they want him. Talent acquisition.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Why?
- 17:00Speaker 4: It doesn't matter. He's on the big league staff. He's
- 17:02Speaker 4: a big league something. And listen, Shelly's Shelly's interesting. I've
- 17:07Speaker 4: known Shelly for a long time. Him and Brian Anderson,
- 17:09Speaker 4: who I played with forever, were really tight. And, you know,
- 17:12Speaker 4: he's always funny. He can get a little crazy sometimes,
- 17:15Speaker 4: but he's a good guy to have on your side.
- 17:17Speaker 4: And I think that's what the Red Sox, they're like, hey,
- 17:19Speaker 4: plus we can poach someone from the Yankees again and
- 17:21Speaker 4: put them on our team. OK, let's do it. And
- 17:23Speaker 4: good for Shelly. Welcome back to the big leagues, because
- 17:25Speaker 4: I know he was a coach for the White Sox
- 17:27Speaker 4: there for a couple of years, too. So welcome back
- 17:28Speaker 4: to the big leagues, Shelly. Long, long stint in the
- 17:30Speaker 4: minor leagues. Yeah, I think it was one year.
- 17:33Speaker 6: He was with the Jays, too, during that time. He
- 17:36Speaker 6: definitely is a domineering presence. But, AJ, wouldn't you want
- 17:43Speaker 6: to know what job you have? I guess it's different
- 17:46Speaker 6: for different people. Like, well, I just want to be
- 17:49Speaker 6: in the big leagues. I don't want to be managing
- 17:51Speaker 6: in Scranton anymore, which I get. Some people like the
- 17:53Speaker 6: big league life. But wouldn't you want to know what
- 17:55Speaker 6: you're doing?
- 17:59Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 17:59Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sure they told him. They just probably
- 18:01Speaker 4: didn't announce it. They probably told him.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:03Speaker 3: There's no way he went there.
- 18:04Speaker 4: He knows what he's doing.
- 18:06Speaker 3: Right? There's no way.
- 18:07Speaker 4: Nobody knew what he did with the White Sox when
- 18:09Speaker 4: he was in the big leagues. Nobody knew what he did.
- 18:11Speaker 4: He was just kind of like a guy that was there.
- 18:13Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 18:14Speaker 1: What is it that you do here?
- 18:16Speaker 6: Like I got offered a job. I got offered a
- 18:18Speaker 6: job from a team and they said, look, we saved
- 18:23Speaker 6: a pension position because they knew I didn't have my
- 18:25Speaker 6: 10 years. They said we saved a pension position because
- 18:29Speaker 6: but your job is going to be kind of fluid.
- 18:32Speaker 6: Like we want you to learn under our bench coach.
- 18:36Speaker 6: You could be like a third assistant, but we don't
- 18:38Speaker 6: have a name for it. A third assistant hitting coach.
- 18:41Speaker 6: And I'm like, I don't need a name, but like,
- 18:45Speaker 6: I think maybe some people need a name.
- 18:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I guess you're, you're on the big
- 18:51Speaker 1: league stage.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Roving.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Roving. Yeah, but you're not roving.
- 18:56Speaker 6: You're just, you're with the team. Like, You wouldn't go
- 18:59Speaker 6: anywhere else. Roving would be like, I'm going to all
- 19:02Speaker 6: the minor league levels.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Roving rolls. Super utility.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Special assistant manager.
- 19:14Speaker 3: What's up?
- 19:15Speaker 2: AJ Ellis has joined the Mets coaching staff under Andy Green,
- 19:18Speaker 2: who is going to be the main man running the
- 19:20Speaker 2: Mets as the manager. Remember, he was the interim guy,
- 19:24Speaker 2: and then they picked him up. Ellis served as special
- 19:26Speaker 2: assistant baseball ops for the Padres since 19, and these
- 19:29Speaker 2: two are good buddies.
- 19:30Speaker 3: They hope to work together, and.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Now they will. Kevin Acey, who reports on the Padres,
- 19:34Speaker 2: said Ellis will be missed. So, A.J., they're trying to
- 19:37Speaker 2: switch things up, the Mets. I mean, we've talked about
- 19:39Speaker 2: this a lot. They're trying to switch things up, but
- 19:40Speaker 2: they don't want too much turnover. It's a tricky spot
- 19:43Speaker 2: because it's like win or potentially get fired. Or it
- 19:46Speaker 2: is win or get fired for the front office here.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Well, I know AJL has had prellers here in San Diego.
- 19:53Speaker 4: He did a lot around there. Again, I got to
- 19:55Speaker 4: follow them against the Brewers and saw how much he
- 19:57Speaker 4: was involved. He was on the field. He was in
- 19:59Speaker 4: the dugout. He was talking to everybody. So, yeah, he
- 20:02Speaker 4: will be missed in San Diego because he did a lot.
- 20:04Speaker 4: And maybe this is a step to maybe him getting
- 20:06Speaker 4: a big league manager's job. I think he's interviewed in
- 20:08Speaker 4: the past. But if you're best friends with someone and
- 20:11Speaker 4: he gets an opportunity to give you a job and
- 20:12Speaker 4: you really like them, you should do it. Although I
- 20:15Speaker 4: warn you, Mark Perrin and Robin Ventura were best friends.
- 20:20Speaker 6: Just careful what you ask for sometimes. That's a whole segment, Scott.
- 20:26Speaker 6: That's a whole segment. What was happening there?
- 20:33Speaker 3: I got to Google that one.
- 20:35Speaker 1: I'd work with my best friend. I think that'd be great.
- 20:37Speaker 3: But then would you fire your best friend?
- 20:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the only reason you are friends. Not just
- 20:43Speaker 1: going to play.
- 20:43Speaker 6: I guess that's not nepotism, but I'm not like, bro,
- 20:46Speaker 6: if you're not holding up your, like, I'm not going to, I'll,
- 20:50Speaker 6: I'll stand on a grenade for you.
- 20:52Speaker 1: But like, if you're not holding up your end of
- 20:55Speaker 1: the bargain.
- 20:55Speaker 3: But then you'll strip away his healthcare?
- 20:58Speaker 1: If what?
- 20:59Speaker 3: But then you'll strip away his healthcare?
- 21:02Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe. Yeah, he'll get big league healthcare. He'll be fine.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Right.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Highly regarded, though, was as a player, too. And we'll
- 21:11Speaker 2: see what that looks like for the Mets. I mean,
- 21:13Speaker 2: I am fascinated to see what they do. If they
- 21:16Speaker 2: don't get Scooble, what does it look like? They might
- 21:20Speaker 2: go that route that Kratz talked about. You can't get Freddie,
- 21:23Speaker 2: but is it Michael King? Plus, I'm forgetting the name
- 21:25Speaker 2: of the good pitcher in Japan. Like, do you try
- 21:28Speaker 2: and rack a few of those versus, yes, versus the
- 21:32Speaker 2: one big fish? It's more their style.
- 21:35Speaker 4: Depends on what you ask. just some fans yelled at
- 21:39Speaker 4: us and we said certain people left. It was good.
- 21:43Speaker 4: And certain Yankee fans, if you remember when we remember
- 21:46Speaker 4: when certain people left and we're like, Oh, because so-and-so left,
- 21:49Speaker 4: we were, they were able to get A, B, C,
- 21:52Speaker 4: and D. And they're like, ha, that's not how it works.
- 21:53Speaker 4: And we're like, okay.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Hey, did you guys see that Pat Murphy went on
- 21:58Speaker 2: Joel Sherman and John Heyman show? And he explained that
- 22:01Speaker 2: he called Brian Cashman right away about the comment to
- 22:04Speaker 2: Jake Bowers being.
- 22:05Speaker 3: Like, you, you're going to be a rich bleeper. And, Remember,
- 22:09Speaker 3: you were on that horse bleep Yankees team playing all
- 22:11Speaker 3: for yourself. Just remember, this is the way we used
- 22:14Speaker 3: to do it.
- 22:14Speaker 2: He actually explained to AJ that that was the running
- 22:16Speaker 2: bit he had with Jake Bowers all year, and he
- 22:19Speaker 2: just used the Yankees since he had played with them,
- 22:21Speaker 2: or at least this is all that he claims. But
- 22:23Speaker 2: that's how he cleared things up.
- 22:29Speaker 4: I don't even know why this is a thing. They're
- 22:31Speaker 4: in the heat of the moment. They're celebrating. Say whatever
- 22:33Speaker 4: you want. And listen, he was being honest with Jake Bowers.
- 22:38Speaker 4: And if you know Murph at all, he's very sarcastic
- 22:41Speaker 4: and he just makes these dry jokes all the time.
- 22:45Speaker 4: And you just have to understand that. The problem is
- 22:47Speaker 4: that people hear this and are like, oh, he's taking
- 22:49Speaker 4: a shot at the Yankees. He was more giving Jake
- 22:51Speaker 4: Bowers crap. And this is the way Murph goes about
- 22:54Speaker 4: congratulating Jake Bowers on an unbelievable year and him about
- 22:57Speaker 4: to get paid. So he basically was just saying, hey,
- 23:00Speaker 4: remember this team when you go get rich. And he
- 23:03Speaker 4: was saying, I'm proud of you like a dad. I'm
- 23:05Speaker 4: proud of you for getting paid and playing great. Now,
- 23:08Speaker 4: when you go away, just remember that we used to
- 23:10Speaker 4: do it a different way. It wasn't– I didn't know that–
- 23:12Speaker 4: I mean, it was very nice that Murph called Brian Cashman.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I didn't think it was necessary, but it was nice.
- 23:19Speaker 6: It wasn't like Cashman didn't answer his call. Like, I'm
- 23:21Speaker 6: sure Cashman was totally fine with what he said.
- 23:24Speaker 1: And you know what?
- 23:26Speaker 6: Knowing Cashman a little bit, maybe if he took offense
- 23:29Speaker 6: to it, it would be something that they would address.
- 23:33Speaker 6: Cashman's not a dude that's going to sit there and
- 23:34Speaker 6: be like, What they're saying is lies. There's no way
- 23:38Speaker 6: we're not athletic. And then within two years, they got
- 23:41Speaker 6: a little bit more athletic. They started stealing more bases.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So, yeah, you know what?
- 23:45Speaker 6: In every piece of sarcasm, I guess there's a little
- 23:47Speaker 6: bit of truth, but the reality is Murph was just
- 23:51Speaker 6: saying what AJ said. Don't forget us little guys when
- 23:54Speaker 6: you go and get paid.
- 23:58Speaker 3: And then maybe Cashman was like, how do we play more.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Like you guys? He was definitely... they're entrenched in how
- 24:07Speaker 1: they do it. They're a good team too, Scott. They're
- 24:09Speaker 1: a good team. I know. They're good.
- 24:11Speaker 3: They're good.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Just how do we get over the hump?
- 24:13Speaker 3: It's been a minute.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Teach us.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Yeah, but then they'd say the Yankees had a World
- 24:23Speaker 6: Series before them until this year.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Sure.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Those two teams, though, play very, very– like that's basically
- 24:30Speaker 2: the opposite ends of the spectrum.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Totally different.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Brewers and Yankees are– Just offensively, not defensively.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Do you guys know that there is a big trial
- 24:43Speaker 2: going on right now in Brooklyn? Pitch rigging trial.
- 24:47Speaker 1: It's Class A.
- 24:48Speaker 3: It's Ortiz.
- 24:49Speaker 2: It was talked about a while ago. They haven't played
- 24:51Speaker 2: in baseball in a minute at this point. And they've
- 24:55Speaker 2: kind of switched things around because originally Luis Ortiz said
- 24:58Speaker 2: he was a victim of Emmanuel Class A's scheme. This
- 25:01Speaker 2: is the pitch rigging scheme where a lot came out
- 25:04Speaker 2: on allegations involving these two pitchers. Class A definitely more
- 25:09Speaker 2: so than Ortiz. But now things have changed. They're actually
- 25:13Speaker 2: kind of teaming up on their defense strategies. And this
- 25:16Speaker 2: is great coverage here from Sam Blum on everything. And actually,
- 25:19Speaker 2: this just came in. He said Milwaukee Brewers catcher Bo
- 25:23Speaker 2: Naylor is scheduled to testify today in the USA versus
- 25:26Speaker 2: Class A Ortiz case. He's a defense witness testifying out
- 25:31Speaker 2: of order. And Class A and Ortiz argued on the
- 25:33Speaker 2: first day their pitches were part of legitimate game strategy.
- 25:39Speaker 3: There's a lot to this one.
- 25:40Speaker 2: We'll bring on Sam Blum at times when we can,
- 25:43Speaker 2: but we can't get them all the time. So I
- 25:44Speaker 2: do want to get, you know, you guys to chime in.
- 25:48Speaker 2: First off, you guys are both catchers. Bo Naylor's getting
- 25:51Speaker 2: called into court in a case that could send former
- 25:55Speaker 2: teammates to prison. AJ, would you be like, damn, I
- 25:59Speaker 2: wish I wasn't getting this kind of call.
- 26:02Speaker 1: It's a lot of pressure.
- 26:02Speaker 4: You don't want to get that call, but you're also
- 26:04Speaker 4: going to tell the truth. At any point, when they
- 26:07Speaker 4: said it was part of a strategy, Kratz, at any point,
- 26:09Speaker 4: did you say throw the slider seven feet outside the
- 26:12Speaker 4: first pitch you come in?
- 26:14Speaker 6: I don't have the Pitchcom system, but I don't think
- 26:19Speaker 6: there's one that says yard dart. Throw me one in
- 26:23Speaker 6: front of home plate for the first pitch of the at-bat.
- 26:26Speaker 4: My wife asked me today, she was reading about this,
- 26:28Speaker 4: and she said, She said, well, what if the guy swings?
- 26:31Speaker 4: I said, if you saw the pitches, there's no way
- 26:33Speaker 4: a guy would swing at these pitches. They were so
- 26:35Speaker 4: far out of the strike zone that nobody could have
- 26:38Speaker 4: swung at them. That was the point. And to say
- 26:41Speaker 4: that they didn't do this on purpose, listen, I've been
- 26:43Speaker 4: around a lot of people and I've seen closers and
- 26:46Speaker 4: closers can get wild. But to just have it miraculously
- 26:49Speaker 4: happen where they threw pitches that were seven feet outside
- 26:52Speaker 4: on the ones that they were bet on, seems pretty
- 26:55Speaker 4: like a pretty huge coincidence to me.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 26:57Speaker 4: Like this is not a, Something where, man, they bet
- 27:00Speaker 4: on 30 pitches and it was just this one. They
- 27:03Speaker 4: bet on one pitch and it was the one that
- 27:05Speaker 4: was eight feet outside. It just seems like a very
- 27:08Speaker 4: odd coincidence.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Wait, and there's more. Because again, allegations.
- 27:12Speaker 2: But when you read these articles, for example, you've got
- 27:15Speaker 2: class A going into the clubhouse, texting with a guy,
- 27:17Speaker 2: then goes out there. And then all of a sudden,
- 27:20Speaker 2: this is where regulation works, okay? You're regulating betting, which
- 27:24Speaker 2: has been going on since the freaking Coliseum days, right?
- 27:29Speaker 2: All of a sudden, you're like, wait, you're seeing hundreds
- 27:33Speaker 2: of thousands, millions of dollars more on one particular pitch
- 27:36Speaker 2: than you usually see. Hmm, we should investigate this. That's
- 27:39Speaker 2: how this stuff gets caught. These are not the first
- 27:42Speaker 2: two guys to ever do stuff like this. This has
- 27:45Speaker 2: been going on for decades, centuries, right? Easier to catch
- 27:51Speaker 2: it now when you see, hey, ding, ding, ding. Why
- 27:54Speaker 2: is everybody betting on Emmanuel Classe's first pitch in a
- 27:56Speaker 2: random game in the regular season? Or why is there
- 27:59Speaker 2: so much handle, right? So much money on that. And
- 28:02Speaker 2: so these two are both now blaming Enoch Pena is
- 28:05Speaker 2: the name. It's a gambler that they feel like he
- 28:08Speaker 2: exploited them and provided false information to bettors. You also
- 28:13Speaker 2: have a part of this where they're saying like, oh,
- 28:15Speaker 2: Class A is rich. Why would he do this for
- 28:17Speaker 2: way less money than he gets paid?
- 28:20Speaker 1: Does that work? We agree on that. We agree on
- 28:24Speaker 1: that end. I mean, yeah, that's stupid. Why would you
- 28:26Speaker 1: do this? Why would you make.
- 28:29Speaker 6: On some of them, he was making less than $ 12, 000
- 28:32Speaker 6: after the cut from whoever it was that he was
- 28:35Speaker 6: pushing it through, if you read all of it. And
- 28:37Speaker 6: to AJ's point about, like, all closers can get kind
- 28:40Speaker 6: of wild, like... If I go in court and they
- 28:44Speaker 6: would put me in court, I'd be like, well, history
- 28:46Speaker 6: will tell you, yes, closers can get wild. History will
- 28:49Speaker 6: tell you, in his four most dominant seasons as a closer,
- 28:54Speaker 6: he had 16 walks, 10 walks, 16 walks, 10 walks,
- 28:57Speaker 6: and 12 walks in 70-plus innings each year. Like, he's not–
- 29:04Speaker 6: I don't know. I thought this was open and shut,
- 29:06Speaker 6: and now that they're like– Ortiz was blaming Classe before,
- 29:10Speaker 6: and now they're like, no, no, no, I was kidding.
- 29:13Speaker 6: Now this is the guy, Enoch Pena. This is who
- 29:16Speaker 6: we're blaming. I'm intrigued again. I thought it was open
- 29:20Speaker 6: and shut.
- 29:21Speaker 2: Yes, 161 bets placed at Class A's home, 30 bets
- 29:24Speaker 2: placed at Progressive Field, right? It's like you've got a
- 29:28Speaker 2: guy that's placing this and then shaving some money off
- 29:32Speaker 2: to you.
- 29:33Speaker 4: Here's the thing. What were those bets placed at Class
- 29:36Speaker 4: A's home, okay? So this is what we don't know,
- 29:39Speaker 4: and again, these are all allegations. Maybe Class A and
- 29:41Speaker 4: Ortiz had a gambling debt and the way they could
- 29:44Speaker 4: get it off was by saying, hey, we don't want
- 29:47Speaker 4: to have to send you money, dude. We don't want
- 29:49Speaker 4: to have to send you $ 20, 000 that we owe you
- 29:51Speaker 4: because that's going to ding on people's radar. How about
- 29:55Speaker 4: we do This, and this will be the scheme that
- 29:58Speaker 4: we do in class A. Obviously, over three years, did
- 30:00Speaker 4: this 18 times. He's being alleged, alleged. This is all alleged.
- 30:05Speaker 4: But maybe they had a gambling debt. It's like the
- 30:07Speaker 4: guys that fix basketball games, right? They bet on other
- 30:10Speaker 4: stuff and they lose. And then they say all these basketball,
- 30:14Speaker 4: you know, all these basketball games you've been heard have
- 30:16Speaker 4: been rigged over the years because they lost betting on
- 30:19Speaker 4: other stuff. And hey, by the way, I'll throw this
- 30:23Speaker 4: game so you can make all that money back and
- 30:24Speaker 4: we'll call it even. Maybe that's what happened. And also,
- 30:27Speaker 4: this also brings us back to the Pete Rose situation.
- 30:31Speaker 4: This is why you can't allow Pete Rose back in
- 30:33Speaker 4: because if you allow him back in, this will happen
- 30:36Speaker 4: more frequently. It can't be legal to bet on games
- 30:39Speaker 4: because it questions you. It brings into the integrity of
- 30:41Speaker 4: baseball and you can't have the integrity of the game's
- 30:44Speaker 4: question because that makes, why do you play the game?
- 30:46Speaker 4: If there's 25 other guys on your team and you're
- 30:48Speaker 4: the only guy out there that knows I'm going to
- 30:50Speaker 4: throw this pitch crappy and And we lose the game
- 30:52Speaker 4: because of it, and it's because you're betting that questions
- 30:55Speaker 4: the integrity of the game. You can't have that happen.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and I feel like I always have to include
- 31:00Speaker 2: this for the people that defend Pete Rose with all
- 31:02Speaker 2: they can.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Oh, well, it's legal to bet now.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Yeah, for me, not for Emmanuel Classe to be rigging
- 31:09Speaker 2: a game, right? So accused of 18 pitches manipulated across
- 31:13Speaker 2: a few seasons and quite a bit of money being exchanged.
- 31:16Speaker 4: By the way, Ortiz's attorneys say the catcher called the pitches.
- 31:19Speaker 4: route through pitch calm well that doesn't mean he can't
- 31:21Speaker 4: throw it not close like great i called a fastball
- 31:24Speaker 4: inside and you threw it eight foot outside just because
- 31:27Speaker 4: i call it i mean kratz how many times you
- 31:29Speaker 4: call a pitch and you're like man i really want
- 31:31Speaker 4: this up and in and they throw it down and
- 31:32Speaker 4: away and the guy whacks it you're like oh man
- 31:34Speaker 4: i well sorry i mean come on that's the weakest
- 31:38Speaker 4: i'm sorry that's the weakest thing i've ever heard someone
- 31:40Speaker 4: try to defend.
- 31:40Speaker 7: It That's what I'm saying. That's why I'm intrigued with this.
- 31:45Speaker 7: They're like, no, no, no, it was this. Actually, no, no, no, no,
- 31:48Speaker 7: it was this. And I've called plenty of pitches that
- 31:51Speaker 7: I've gotten yelled at for. Like a pitching coach definitely
- 31:56Speaker 7: yelled at me. I'm like, here, you push the buttons.
- 32:00Speaker 7: You do it if you don't like what happened. I
- 32:03Speaker 7: didn't tell him to throw a yard dart. I didn't
- 32:05Speaker 7: have $ 12, 000 on the first pitch ball to start off
- 32:08Speaker 7: the ninth inning or whenever Luis Ortiz was throwing.
- 32:13Speaker 2: And the defendants are pleading not guilty and denying all
- 32:17Speaker 2: allegations here.
- 32:18Speaker 4: I mean, 161 bets placed at Klaas' home. What was
- 32:22Speaker 4: he betting on? Can we get that? What was he
- 32:25Speaker 4: betting on? Again, did he win or did he lose?
- 32:29Speaker 4: Did he win or did he lose? Was he down
- 32:33Speaker 4: a bunch of money? Again, and he wanted to get
- 32:34Speaker 4: out of it by doing this for someone. Maybe he
- 32:39Speaker 4: had Enoch make the bets for him on his phone.
- 32:43Speaker 4: And they just happened to ping on his IP address.
- 32:46Speaker 4: And then so Klasse wouldn't get caught. And then he's losing.
- 32:50Speaker 4: And then Enoch's like, man, you got to pay me
- 32:52Speaker 4: this money. And Klasse's going, man, I might be rich,
- 32:54Speaker 4: but I don't know how I'm going to pay whatever
- 32:56Speaker 4: the number is without getting in trouble.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 32:59Speaker 4: It seems like a pretty open and shut case, but
- 33:01Speaker 4: these are all allegations that we don't know.
- 33:03Speaker 6: And the whole Bo Naylor thing, the Bo Naylor thing today,
- 33:07Speaker 6: until this past college season, my friend's son is a
- 33:11Speaker 6: pitcher and he's a freshman and And they called, I'd
- 33:15Speaker 6: never heard of a coach, a catcher, call for a
- 33:21Speaker 6: slider in the dirt first pitch of an at-bat back-to-back pitches. So, like,
- 33:26Speaker 6: I've never called. I've said, hey, you know what, we're
- 33:28Speaker 6: going to stay away from this guy. So there's no
- 33:31Speaker 6: button on Pitchcom that says throw this ball in front
- 33:35Speaker 6: of home plate. This dude's swinging. He's definitely going to swing.
- 33:39Speaker 6: We might chase away. We might say, you know what,
- 33:42Speaker 6: we're not going to go after this guy because we
- 33:43Speaker 6: got a base open, but it's not going to be
- 33:45Speaker 6: first pitch of the inning. Sorry, that's not why we
- 33:47Speaker 6: brought you in. We didn't bring you in for the
- 33:49Speaker 6: first pitch to be just absolute yard dart.
- 33:53Speaker 1: There's a lot.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I mean, I've read a lot about this case. The
- 33:57Speaker 2: cockfighting part of it too.
- 33:59Speaker 3: Like, oh, we were talking about cockfighting.
- 34:00Speaker 2: Oh, conveniently at the time that you go in and
- 34:02Speaker 2: then you do what Kratz is talking about and you
- 34:05Speaker 2: freaking dart pitches. And then there's a ton of money
- 34:07Speaker 2: spent on those pitches. Again, like maybe there is some
- 34:10Speaker 2: card that the defense is going to unveil that says, oh,
- 34:13Speaker 2: you know what?
- 34:14Speaker 3: I get it now.
- 34:15Speaker 2: But until then, this is going to be an interesting trial.
- 34:19Speaker 2: And I think a lot of people are surprised that
- 34:21Speaker 2: it's going to trial and they're fighting like this versus
- 34:24Speaker 2: a plea deal.
- 34:24Speaker 3: But that is your right. That is your right.
- 34:27Speaker 2: So we'll let this play out and we will document
- 34:30Speaker 2: it and we'll talk about it as it goes through.
- 34:32Speaker 2: And great job by Sam Blum, who will give us
- 34:34Speaker 2: a lot of the information because you can't record it.
- 34:36Speaker 4: Real quick. I also love that Ortiz's attorney is like, ah,
- 34:39Speaker 4: the guy paying you, he's lying. He gave me bad
- 34:41Speaker 4: betting tips. So you lost. I mean, like he's, he's,
- 34:47Speaker 4: you're lost.
- 34:48Speaker 2: I think he's saying Kenya gave bad betting tips to
- 34:50Speaker 2: the other people that were placing the bets too on
- 34:54Speaker 2: the pitch rigging.
- 34:54Speaker 4: No, Well, then why do they only bet on two
- 34:57Speaker 4: pitches that he threw the whole year and both of
- 34:59Speaker 4: them happen to be balls and both of them happen
- 35:01Speaker 4: to be pitch outs on the first pitch? Like, come on.
- 35:04Speaker 4: I mean, I get that you're trying to get doubt
- 35:06Speaker 4: in there, reasonable doubt, but any reasonable person can be like, yeah,
- 35:10Speaker 4: they probably might have possibly allegedly done this.
- 35:15Speaker 3: I'll finish with this, right?
- 35:16Speaker 2: You're sitting there and you're at one of the sports
- 35:18Speaker 2: books and your boss comes over like, hey, how'd we.
- 35:21Speaker 3: Do, you know, on this game? Oh.
- 35:23Speaker 2: We lost 500 Gs on a Class A pitch. We've
- 35:26Speaker 2: never lost more than 5K on this before, or whatever
- 35:28Speaker 2: it is.
- 35:30Speaker 1: It's literally that much. That's how this works.
- 35:33Speaker 6: They lost 10 to 15 times more on a single
- 35:37Speaker 6: pitch in these games than they ever had on any
- 35:40Speaker 6: other pitch.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Anyway, sorry.
- 35:43Speaker 6: I like common sense, and this just doesn't feel like
- 35:45Speaker 6: common sense.
- 35:47Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'm a betting man, so if I'm participating now...
- 35:50Speaker 2: That's why it's against the law, right? Because they're rigging
- 35:52Speaker 2: the system that I'm participating in. That's just how the
- 35:55Speaker 2: laws work. That's why you regulate it. Hey, is that
- 35:58Speaker 2: familiar to anyone? Anyone on this panel familiar with that
- 36:03Speaker 2: photo and that bat?
- 36:05Speaker 4: I know who that guy is.
- 36:08Speaker 3: What about the bat?
- 36:10Speaker 4: I hadn't seen that bat, but now I have. It's
- 36:12Speaker 4: great that it's back in, it's in Cooperstown and put
- 36:16Speaker 4: away very nicely for mr blum who had a big
- 36:18Speaker 4: home run with that bat the only bat he had
- 36:20Speaker 4: in the world series was a home run that won
- 36:22Speaker 4: a game so never know minor moves matter.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Yeah it was the hall of fame saying hey jeff
- 36:27Speaker 2: blum's here the big 2005 home run bat having a
- 36:31Speaker 2: little fun with it so it's kept there right it
- 36:33Speaker 2: was there and then he goes to basically give it
- 36:35Speaker 2: a little visit and say thank you thank you for
- 36:37Speaker 2: the title and my career just good good people um
- 36:42Speaker 2: And he's one of the funniest crossovers in the sport
- 36:45Speaker 2: because he's been the Astros broadcaster now, even though he
- 36:47Speaker 2: burned the Astros, but played for them too.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:52Speaker 6: AJ hangs around and rubs elbows with some very famous people.
- 36:56Speaker 6: I got to go to the Hall of Fame as
- 36:58Speaker 6: a kid. I got to go to the Hall of
- 37:00Speaker 6: Fame as a minor leaguer. I got to go to
- 37:02Speaker 6: the Hall of Fame as a big leaguer. And then
- 37:05Speaker 6: I got to go to the Hall of Fame with
- 37:07Speaker 6: a Hall of Famer. We went up there with Rhino,
- 37:09Speaker 6: with Ryan Sandberg. And each experience was completely different. I
- 37:15Speaker 6: love the Hall of Fame, but it was one of
- 37:17Speaker 6: those things that when you get to experience it with
- 37:20Speaker 6: some of your stuff in there, I'm sure it's a
- 37:22Speaker 6: little bit different of an experience.
- 37:29Speaker 3: Do we know what else is there from 05?
- 37:32Speaker 4: I don't know. They have a bunch of my stuff.
- 37:33Speaker 4: Big moments or like? They have my– they have a
- 37:39Speaker 4: bunch of stuff they've asked me. I gave them my
- 37:42Speaker 4: bat from my 2000 hit. It was when they used
- 37:44Speaker 4: to have lockers. I don't know if they still– I
- 37:45Speaker 4: haven't been there in a couple years.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember this.
- 37:48Speaker 4: Right when you walked in, they had a locker for
- 37:49Speaker 4: each team, and my bat was like right in the
- 37:51Speaker 4: middle from my 2000 hit. They asked for my scorebook
- 37:56Speaker 4: from the Seattle-Detroit, my scorecard that I did the game
- 37:59Speaker 4: for the Seattle-Detroit game 5, 15 inning game. So I
- 38:02Speaker 4: sent that in to them, which was just a mess.
- 38:05Speaker 4: I'm like, I don't know why you guys want this, but.
- 38:07Speaker 4: And they offered us to come do shows once the
- 38:10Speaker 4: lockout happens. So I'm in. I love Cooperstown.
- 38:12Speaker 3: What?
- 38:13Speaker 4: I mean, it's going to be a little cold in
- 38:14Speaker 4: December and January, but I love Cooperstown. I'm happy to
- 38:17Speaker 4: go there. I love checking out all the stuff. I've
- 38:19Speaker 4: been there many times, and I love it there. I'm
- 38:22Speaker 4: not going unless we can golf. I heard the golf
- 38:24Speaker 4: course is a lot of fun.
- 38:26Speaker 3: In January?
- 38:28Speaker 4: December?
- 38:30Speaker 1: December?
- 38:30Speaker 4: The golf course is fun.
- 38:33Speaker 3: Actually, I played the golf course.
- 38:34Speaker 1: In December? At Otisaga. You can smell the hits.
- 38:46Speaker 2: Hey, the Houston Astros are interviewing the names that we
- 38:55Speaker 2: spoke about.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Albert Pujols is there today. Morgan Ensberg does get the call.
- 39:03Speaker 2: We didn't hear about some of the other Cardinals people yet,
- 39:05Speaker 2: like Descalso, John Jay, some of the other coaches. around
- 39:08Speaker 2: that staff, but Pujols, Ensberg, Ausmus, and Irueta, who I
- 39:14Speaker 2: spoke about on yesterday's show, a longtime bench coach. Those
- 39:17Speaker 2: are the four names we know about. And Brian McTaggart,
- 39:20Speaker 2: with a little more context, can you put that back up, please?
- 39:23Speaker 2: A little more context on Ensberg. He said, former college
- 39:27Speaker 2: teammate of Randy Flores, spent the last three seasons managing
- 39:29Speaker 2: Triple Durham with the Rays. That holds a little bit
- 39:33Speaker 2: to me. There are a lot of good things to like.
- 39:35Speaker 2: That kind of seems like, AJ, if they like the person,
- 39:38Speaker 2: he's got the perfect storm. He fits the former Astro.
- 39:41Speaker 2: He's probably friendly with Bagwell and company. He's with the
- 39:45Speaker 2: Rays organization, clearly doing a good job of guys coming
- 39:49Speaker 2: through that triple a system right now and then he's
- 39:53Speaker 2: friends with the guy who just took over.
- 39:57Speaker 4: Seems like he checks a lot of boxes doesn't.
- 39:59Speaker 3: He oh yeah i mean.
- 40:01Speaker 5: Former astro did he go to driveline with randy forrest
- 40:06Speaker 5: i don't know has he been to driveline i don't
- 40:08Speaker 5: know the just if he hasn't he should just go
- 40:10Speaker 5: there for the next week and then check.
- 40:12Speaker 1: One day one day certificate.
- 40:16Speaker 3: I think if you're coming from the Razor Brewers right now,
- 40:18Speaker 3: you're an even hotter topic. Yes, we were joking. You
- 40:22Speaker 3: can't use code foul to try and get a discount there.
- 40:25Speaker 3: But I think you might be able to. They might
- 40:30Speaker 3: look at you funny. But I do.
- 40:32Speaker 2: Think these are clubs that already get copied, right? Guardians, Brewers, Razor,
- 40:37Speaker 2: you talked about this. The emphasis on copying them is
- 40:40Speaker 2: going to be higher right now. They just made it
- 40:41Speaker 2: to the World Series.
- 40:43Speaker 3: It's a thing. You want a little bit of the
- 40:46Speaker 3: secret sauce.
- 40:49Speaker 4: You see the Brewers are getting poached now. White Sox
- 40:51Speaker 4: just hired one of their guys to be their new
- 40:53Speaker 4: director of amateur scouting. So, I mean, this is what
- 40:56Speaker 4: happens when you win. Teams start grabbing your people.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:00Speaker 3: How does the White Sox grab two? Two guys from
- 41:03Speaker 3: the Brewers now?
- 41:07Speaker 1: One of the hitting coaches? New assistant hitting coach?
- 41:10Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 41:12Speaker 6: Or maybe it was a White Sox guy that went
- 41:15Speaker 6: to the Cardinals.
- 41:16Speaker 4: White Sox guy went to the Cardinals.
- 41:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:18Speaker 4: He went to driveline for two years. He worked at
- 41:21Speaker 4: driveline for two years.
- 41:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:23Speaker 6: They said they don't strike out enough, so they wanted
- 41:25Speaker 6: to strike out more as a team.
- 41:27Speaker 1: That's a little true. Like a team-wide strikeout goal.
- 41:32Speaker 3: Stop it.
