- 0:00Speaker 1: So I talked to my son Dutch yesterday. He said
- 0:02Speaker 1: he saw the Odyssey movie. He said, it's one of
- 0:05Speaker 1: if it's not the best movie he's ever seen in
- 0:07Speaker 1: his life, it's top two or three.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:11Speaker 1: And then a guy I talked to yesterday said he
- 0:13Speaker 1: didn't like it, that he was woke, and I don't know.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I don't know how that movie woke, but I don't know.
- 0:17Speaker 2: So I was like, that's interesting.
- 0:19Speaker 1: So I was gonna kind of get into it on
- 0:21Speaker 1: the air today and I thought, wait a minute, here's
- 0:22Speaker 1: Peyton with more.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yes, I love it.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I also got to go see The Odyssey, and I
- 0:28Speaker 3: really enjoyed. The more I think about it, the more
- 0:29Speaker 3: I'm like, gosh, I was a great movie. But I
- 0:31Speaker 3: got to be honest, I really didn't know much about
- 0:34Speaker 3: The Odyssey, and I feel like it's one of those
- 0:35Speaker 3: movies where you kind of do have to have an
- 0:38Speaker 3: idea of what you're about to walk into or you're
- 0:41Speaker 3: probably going to be a little bit lost. So I
- 0:43Speaker 3: have a breakdown of some of the things that you
- 0:45Speaker 3: should know before you go and see The Odyssey.
- 0:47Speaker 4: This weekend excellent, OK, I'm going to Saturday morning.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You know what, too, is my son Dutch. He saw
- 0:53Speaker 1: it just a normal theater, not even an imax, and
- 0:55Speaker 1: he loved it. Yeah he's yeah, But okay, go, what do.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We need to know?
- 0:58Speaker 3: Okay? So first, what is the Odyssey? So the Odyssey
- 1:01Speaker 3: is an epic poem written almost three thousand years ago
- 1:04Speaker 3: by the ancient Greek poet Homer. So kind of think
- 1:07Speaker 3: of Homer as like the Steven Spielberg and the guy
- 1:09Speaker 3: who wrote Game of Thrones of ancient Greece.
- 1:12Speaker 4: That's him.
- 1:13Speaker 3: So he wrote the Iliad, which is about the Trojan War,
- 1:16Speaker 3: but the Odyssey is what happens after the war. The
- 1:19Speaker 3: Odyssey is his journey. So Odysseus he is the guy
- 1:23Speaker 3: that is on.
- 1:24Speaker 4: The journey for the honest.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Yeah, that is Matt Damon's character. He is the king
- 1:29Speaker 3: of Ithaca. He's famous because he's not the strongest warrior,
- 1:32Speaker 3: but he's the smartest. So he's the guy who always
- 1:34Speaker 3: has the plan. He comes up with the idea of
- 1:35Speaker 3: the Trojan Horse. So basically, if Achilles is Captain America,
- 1:39Speaker 3: Odysseus is iron Man.
- 1:41Speaker 4: Okay, gotcha, Okay, So.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Kind of the story, Odysseus he wins the Trojan War,
- 1:46Speaker 3: Now this is not a spoiler, this is just I
- 1:48Speaker 3: mean history. So he wants to go home to his
- 1:51Speaker 3: wife and his son, that's simple. But the gods are
- 1:54Speaker 3: mad at him. So what should have taken him only
- 1:56Speaker 3: a few weeks to go home takes him ten years
- 2:00Speaker 3: to do all of this. So in those ten years,
- 2:02Speaker 3: he fights the cyclops sea monsters, which is sirens, angry god, storms, shipwrecks,
- 2:07Speaker 3: all of those things. So every kind of like it's
- 2:10Speaker 3: like a new journey every chapter throughout this story. So
- 2:13Speaker 3: Greek mythology, unlike modern movies, it's like the gods aren't
- 2:16Speaker 3: just watching, they're actively ruining people's lives. So kind of
- 2:19Speaker 3: think like if the Avengers were like emotionally unstable and
- 2:22Speaker 3: constantly beefing with humans. Heart godha is like the comparison
- 2:26Speaker 3: of what's going on.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Okay, that's really good.
- 2:28Speaker 3: This is probably the biggest talking point in the most
- 2:31Speaker 3: consistent point of the movie The Odyssey Zeus's law. So
- 2:36Speaker 3: in the original Odyssey poem, they don't go around saying
- 2:38Speaker 3: Zeus's law. There's something called zena, which is basically means
- 2:41Speaker 3: sacred hospitality. So if someone shows up to your home,
- 2:44Speaker 3: you feed them, you protect them. You don't rob them,
- 2:46Speaker 3: you don't kill them, and you don't abuse your power
- 2:48Speaker 3: over them. If you're the guest, you respect the home,
- 2:51Speaker 3: you don't overstay, and you don't steal. So if you
- 2:54Speaker 3: break this, you're not only offending the other person, you
- 2:56Speaker 3: are offending Zeus himself.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Those rules to live by today too. Absolutely don't kill them.
- 3:04Speaker 4: It is not literally.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Zeus's law is this movie's morals compet like it's like,
- 3:09Speaker 3: don't be rude. It just becomes like, how do you
- 3:11Speaker 3: treat people when you have power over them?
- 3:13Speaker 2: They talk about this in the movie.
- 3:14Speaker 3: They don't talk about it. They just keep bringing up
- 3:16Speaker 3: Zeus's law. So if you don't know what Zeus's law,
- 3:18Speaker 3: you're kind of like, huh, But you end up figuring
- 3:21Speaker 3: it out as everyone's you know, continuing to talk about
- 3:23Speaker 3: Zeus's lawn. And Odysseus comes across all of these challenges,
- 3:27Speaker 3: so you're gonna meet Poseidon. Poseidon is the biggest one.
- 3:29Speaker 3: He is. He hates Odysseus because Odysseus blinds Poseidon's son,
- 3:33Speaker 3: which is the Cyclops.
- 3:35Speaker 4: Oh okay, yes, and his daughter Mermaid of course.
- 3:39Speaker 3: Yes, no, that's King Triton. So Poseidon or Poseidon, he
- 3:44Speaker 3: spent ten years making sure that Odysseus can't go home.
- 3:46Speaker 3: So literally, imagine if the ocean literally hated your guts.
- 3:50Speaker 4: That's that's them.
- 3:51Speaker 3: So you have the Cyclops, he's the one eyed giant,
- 3:53Speaker 3: you have a you have a scene with the Cyclops.
- 3:54Speaker 3: To me personally, probably one of the most haunting sounds
- 3:57Speaker 3: I've ever heard from a non horror movie.
- 3:59Speaker 2: That's what I said too.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yes, it is like it is in haunting is truly
- 4:03Speaker 3: the only word that I can use to describe that.
- 4:06Speaker 3: You're also gonna meet Circe. Circe she is like a
- 4:08Speaker 3: really cool character. She is a sorceress, but she's not
- 4:10Speaker 3: a witch. She also kind of has one of those
- 4:12Speaker 3: scenes where it's giving horror movie but it's not a
- 4:14Speaker 3: horror movie. That one was absolutely wild. You're also gonna
- 4:17Speaker 3: run into a scene with the sirens. So sirens are
- 4:20Speaker 3: one of the most misunderstood mythical creatures. People think that
- 4:22Speaker 3: they're mermaids, but they're not. They're mythical beings who's singing
- 4:26Speaker 3: is so beautiful and captivating that sailors literally steer their
- 4:29Speaker 3: ships towards the sound and it leads them to the
- 4:32Speaker 3: rocks to their death. Oh so this is basically like
- 4:35Speaker 3: mythology's version of catfishing.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Got it, man, That's cool. Yeah, and I'm excited to
- 4:39Speaker 4: see it. Now you have the Bird.
- 4:41Speaker 3: The Beard is played by Travis Scott. Now we were
- 4:43Speaker 3: talking about this yesterday. I felt like seeing Travis Scott
- 4:46Speaker 3: kind of took me out of the movie a little
- 4:47Speaker 3: bit because I know he's just such a famous rapper.
- 4:50Speaker 3: When I kind of saw some breakdowns online of this,
- 4:52Speaker 3: I was like, actually, Christopher Nolan is a genius for
- 4:56Speaker 3: having Travis Scott play the Bard. Because a bird is
- 4:59Speaker 3: an ancient storyteller. So before books, people they memorize these
- 5:03Speaker 3: stories and perform them out loud. So imagine someone combining
- 5:07Speaker 3: like a rapper, a singer, a spoken word artist in
- 5:09Speaker 3: a historian that's a baird. So using a rapper who
- 5:12Speaker 3: literally uses his words as a storyline. I literally have
- 5:16Speaker 3: goosebumps right now, Like that is so dope. Then you
- 5:19Speaker 3: have Penelope that's played by Anne Hathaway. She is Odysseus,
- 5:22Speaker 3: his wife, so she's kind of she is the premise, right,
- 5:25Speaker 3: she has all of these suitors who want to come
- 5:27Speaker 3: for her. Then you have Till Machis, who plays Tom Holland.
- 5:30Speaker 3: That's Odysseus's son, Penelope's son, and he's trying to fight
- 5:33Speaker 3: off of these all.
- 5:34Speaker 4: Of these suitors, the people that want to come take
- 5:36Speaker 4: the people don't want to come.
- 5:37Speaker 3: And take his place, right, but everybody thinks Odysseus is dead.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So Penelope, she's kind of like she's like taken her
- 5:44Speaker 3: time when it's coming to picking one of these suitors. Athena,
- 5:48Speaker 3: she's played by Zendia. She is team Odysseus. She constantly
- 5:51Speaker 3: helps him, and she is the goddess of wisdom, so
- 5:54Speaker 3: it makes sense that she's favoring the clever hero. The
- 5:57Speaker 3: reason that everyone is so obsessed with this story is
- 6:00Speaker 3: because without the Odyssey, we probably wouldn't get Lord of
- 6:03Speaker 3: the Rings, right, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Star Wars,
- 6:07Speaker 3: anything like that.
- 6:08Speaker 4: So basically, three thousand years old, they were writing sci
- 6:11Speaker 4: five years a fantasy.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Then the symbolism of this movie, it's about temptation with
- 6:16Speaker 3: the sirens, pride with the Cyclops, patients with Penelope, perseverance,
- 6:21Speaker 3: perseverance with Odysseus, and then finding your way home after
- 6:24Speaker 3: you've changed.
- 6:26Speaker 2: That's pretty cool. The only problem is that for me
- 6:29Speaker 2: is that it's a three hour movie.
- 6:30Speaker 3: But I just don't feel that way, John Jay, I'm
- 6:32Speaker 3: telling you. It's one of those movies that's so action
- 6:34Speaker 3: packed that you're like.
- 6:36Speaker 2: What weird? Though, Here's what's weird for me is like
- 6:39Speaker 2: this happened with Bridgerton.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Is when you're gonna get on social media and then
- 6:42Speaker 1: you see the cast taking selfies with each other.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, like wait a.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Minute, oh dz is Sark Travis Scott taking his selfie
- 6:50Speaker 1: on a boat. Yeah, like wait a minute, the bridgeton
- 6:53Speaker 1: and when Bridgerton cast is doing tiktoks and.
- 6:55Speaker 2: In the uniform, I was like, what I didn't have
- 6:58Speaker 2: that back then.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I think that's the best part of that just tells
- 7:00Speaker 3: you that their story telling, their acting, and their performance
- 7:04Speaker 3: really brought you to that time that you don't like,
- 7:07Speaker 3: you forget that these are like normal people that you might.
- 7:10Speaker 4: Run into the gray and you know, like they they
- 7:12Speaker 4: didn't do it like hardly any cg I at all.
- 7:15Speaker 4: It's like all practice. So they built a trojan horse.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Yes, that was a true story.
- 7:20Speaker 3: In what you thought that the Odyssey was a true story.
- 7:23Speaker 1: That was true story stuff like to tell you kept
- 7:25Speaker 1: hearing about this psychlop stuff and I was like, that.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Was it was just it's a one I.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Feel like Snoop Dogg and Game of Thrones.
- 7:32Speaker 4: It's good to learn about history, your history.
- 7:36Speaker 1: We got a nice job Peyton. That was Peyton with
- 7:38Speaker 1: more That was great. That was our first Peyton with
- 7:41Speaker 1: more segment and that was great.
