- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:05podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Anna McGivern, and let's dive into today's
- 0:13quote from Careless Dweck, Stanford psychologist and author
- 0:17of Mindset, the New Psychology of Success.
- 0:20She once wrote, we like to think of our champions and idols as
- 0:25superheroes who were born different from us.
- 0:28We don't like to think of them as relatively ordinary people
- 0:33who made themselves extraordinary.
- 0:36This quote destroys A comforting lie we tell ourselves.
- 0:40The lie goes like this. Those people are special.
- 0:45They were born with talent I don't have.
- 0:48They're different from me, so of course they succeeded.
- 0:52It's comforting because it lets us off the hook.
- 0:55If they were born special, then our ordinariness isn't our
- 1:00fault. We can stay exactly where we are
- 1:04and blame genetics. But Dweck spent decades
- 1:06researching high achievers, and here's what she found.
- 1:10They weren't born superheroes. They were ordinary people who
- 1:14did something extraordinary. They committed to growth.
- 1:19Michael Jordan got cut from his high school basketball team.
- 1:23He wasn't born the greatest. He made himself the greatest
- 1:26through obsessive practice. JK Rowling was a single mother
- 1:32on welfare when she started writing Harry Potter.
- 1:35She wasn't born a legendary author, she became one through
- 1:39persistence. Your idol started where you are
- 1:44ordinary, maybe even less than ordinary.
- 1:48What made them extraordinary wasn't their starting point.
- 1:52It was their refusal to stay there.
- 1:55Dwight calls this the growth mindset, the belief that
- 1:58abilities can be developed through dedication and hard
- 2:01work. The opposite is a fixed mindset,
- 2:05the belief that talent is innate and unchangeable, that you
- 2:09either have it or you don't. Guess which one keeps you
- 2:14stacked, and guess which one creates champions.
- 2:19So here's the question, what have you been avoiding because
- 2:22you think you weren't born with the talent for it?
- 2:25Because here's the truth, you probably weren't.
- 2:29But that doesn't matter. Champions aren't born, they're
- 2:33made. So go make yourself
- 2:35extraordinary too. That's it for today.
- 2:38I'm Anna McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 2:42tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 2:48with another.
