• 1:27
Speaker 2: another foggy morning. Here in the Valley, Metro News meteorologist
• 1:30
Speaker 2: Brian Hughes says the fog burning away. Another great day, though,
• 1:33
Speaker 2: around these parts. Highs are going to be in the
• 1:35
Speaker 2: upper 70s, partly cloudy tonight, not as cool. Low in
• 1:38
Speaker 2: the upper 50s, sunny mid-70s tomorrow. Same for Friday. Some
• 1:42
Speaker 2: clouds rolling in by Saturday. Highs in the upper 70s.
• 1:44
Speaker 2: Heavy rain, though, developing by late Sunday into Sunday night.
• 1:48
Speaker 2: High temps on Sunday below 70s. Download the Metro News

Speaker 2: Coming up, good friend, West Virginia native, and much sought-after
• 1:59
Speaker 2: political columnist, Andrew Donaldson. He's going to stop by. Always
• 2:02
Speaker 2: a good time when he's here, and always a good
• 2:04
Speaker 2: time when this guy is here as well. It's a
• 2:07
Speaker 2: good buddy from all good newspapers, Stephen Allen Adams. Good morning, sir.
• 2:10
Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
• 2:11
Speaker 5: Good morning, sir. Man, I am glad for this weather
• 2:15
Speaker 5: and wearing pullovers. It's, you know, I didn't used to
• 2:18
  Speaker 5: like fall.
• 2:18
  Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
• 2:19
Speaker 5: I used to hate fall, but as I've gotten older, fall,
• 2:22
Speaker 5: I think, is becoming my favorite season.
• 2:25
Speaker 2: It's not. I mean, I said this on the show yesterday.
• 2:27
Speaker 2: I know technically, you know, it is autumn. I get that.
• 2:31
Speaker 2: But to me, until the temperatures get down into the 40s,
• 2:34
Speaker 2: the 50s, I mean, I'm not really talking about for highs.
• 2:38
  Speaker 2: I'm talking about, I mean, we've been in the 40s,
• 2:40
Speaker 2: I guess. But you've got to dip down a little
• 2:42
Speaker 2: bit on a cold morning in October, November. You've got
• 2:44
Speaker 2: to dip down to the upper 30s. So I officially
• 2:47
Speaker 2: call it fall. And I will not buy. one of
• 2:50
Speaker 2: my favorite beers, Oktoberfest from Sam Adams, until the temperature
• 2:54
Speaker 2: drops below 40. It's a thing with me every year. Agreed.
• 2:57
Speaker 2: Temperature in the Kanawha Valley has not dropped below 40
• 2:59
Speaker 2: from what Brian Hughes tells me as of yet, so
• 3:02
Speaker 2: I have yet to purchase my Sam Adams Oktoberfest, and
• 3:05
Speaker 2: I will not until the temperature drops below 40.
• 3:07
Speaker 5: I'm a Sam Adams Oktoberfest fan. I actually concur with that. Yeah,
• 3:12
Speaker 5: you don't want to drink that until it's nice and crisp.
• 3:14
Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. It's Halloween. It's trick-or-treat kind of stuff.
• 3:17
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 3:19
Speaker 2: All right. So I do want to get your take
• 3:21
Speaker 2: on this. You and I were joking about this off
• 3:23
Speaker 2: the air. I spent a lot of time this week
• 3:25
Speaker 2: talking about the town center. And I feel like a celebrity, Stephen,
• 3:29
Speaker 2: died because I feel the need to ask everyone I
• 3:32
Speaker 2: see or interview, what are your memories of or what
• 3:35
Speaker 2: will you miss the most? Do you think all the
• 3:38
Speaker 2: hype on the potential closing of town center is a
• 3:40
  Speaker 2: little overdone?
• 3:42
Speaker 5: Well, yes and no. And just full disclosure, I live
• 3:45
Speaker 5: in this town. I don't report news in this town.
• 3:47
Speaker 5: So I can express an opinion about this because I
• 3:51
Speaker 5: don't report news here. And I've obviously been to the
• 3:54
Speaker 5: town center a lot like anyone that's lived in this area.
• 3:57
Speaker 5: JCPenney's is where I always bought my dress shirts and
• 4:00
Speaker 5: all that. And I remember I was thinking the other
• 4:03
Speaker 5: day of a photo that was taken of me right
• 4:06
Speaker 5: when they were having the 30th anniversary. It was right
• 4:08
Speaker 5: after they did the last round of renovations. back in
• 4:12
Speaker 5: the last decade. And it is crazy just how quick,
• 4:17
Speaker 5: in the scheme of things, that place has gone. You
• 4:20
Speaker 5: can blame the previous management there, whole group, whoever you
• 4:23
Speaker 5: want to blame. And I don't know. I think the
• 4:27
Speaker 5: town center has its own particular set of problems that
• 4:30
Speaker 5: are unique to the town center. Now, I understand. I
• 4:33
Speaker 5: made this point on a couple posts, and some people
• 4:35
Speaker 5: pushed back. And I agree, actually, in part with what
• 4:37
Speaker 5: they said, you know, Other malls are doing pretty well
• 4:40
Speaker 5: in the area, but they do have a lot of
• 4:43
Speaker 5: things that we don't have. They got, A, a lot
• 4:45
Speaker 5: of other brick-and-mortar places around it. They have free parking.
• 4:50
Speaker 5: That's a big thing. There's differences there. But this is
• 4:56
Speaker 5: the capital city's mall, and there should be a market
• 4:59
Speaker 5: for it, especially given that you have TC Energy has
• 5:01
Speaker 5: just moved in, Pocahontas Bank. I think they're still talking
• 5:04
  Speaker 5: about that hotel.
• 5:05
  Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
• 5:06
Speaker 5: That could go in right there on the corner i
• 5:07
Speaker 5: mean there's development happening downtown and summer streets like going
• 5:12
Speaker 5: gangbusters right now you think them all would be doing
• 5:15
Speaker 5: better but it's not and i think you do have
• 5:18
Speaker 5: to hold the whole group responsible for.
• 5:20
Speaker 2: That and i think if you follow uh sean taylor
• 5:23
Speaker 2: who is a was talking to sean a little bit
• 5:25
Speaker 2: earlier he's a city councilman here in charleston and working
• 5:27
Speaker 2: to get him on the show but i'll tell you
• 5:29
  Speaker 2: sean is a difficult guy to I mean, he's a
• 5:32
Speaker 2: very busy attorney, and it's kind of hard to get
• 5:34
Speaker 2: him on. But I was working for today and tomorrow,
• 5:37
Speaker 2: and it looked like it may be one day next
• 5:39
Speaker 2: week where I can get Sean on the show. But
• 5:40
Speaker 2: he's done, if you follow Sean, the Councilman Taylor, on
• 5:44
Speaker 2: social media, he's done a really, really good job in
• 5:46
Speaker 2: explaining all this and explaining what you said. This is
• 5:49
  Speaker 2: not a one-person thing. It's not a one-company thing. And
• 5:52
Speaker 2: the problems, you know, having... having a mall where the
• 5:57
Speaker 2: parking is not necessarily connected. It's connected physically, but not
• 6:02
Speaker 2: on paper connected. It's a totally different organization that runs
• 6:05
Speaker 2: the parking aspect of it, so it is very complicated.
• 6:07
Speaker 2: I will say this, though, because I know you're from
• 6:09
Speaker 2: a smaller town as I am. I'm older than you,
• 6:12
Speaker 2: but I can tell you as a teen in the 80s,
• 6:14
Speaker 2: it was such a big deal to come to the
• 6:17
Speaker 2: town center because where I grew up, We didn't have
• 6:19
Speaker 2: any of those stores back home. And, I mean, hell,
• 6:21
  Speaker 2: we didn't even have a McDonald's or a Taco Bell
• 6:24
Speaker 2: until I was like 19, 20 years old in Logan County.
• 6:29
  Speaker 2: We didn't even have a McDonald's or a Taco Bell.
• 6:31
Speaker 2: So even that was a big deal.
• 6:32
Speaker 5: Well, I come from St.
• 6:32
  Speaker 2: Mary's, West Virginia.
• 6:33
Speaker 5: For me, it was the Grand Central Mall in Vienna.
• 6:36
Speaker 5: And we were really poor, so we were lucky we
• 6:39
Speaker 5: went to the mall ever. It was usually Kmart or
• 6:41
Speaker 5: Hills or things of that nature. So when we got
• 6:44
Speaker 5: to the mall, the Grand Central Mall is a real treat.
• 6:47
Speaker 5: And that was back when they had mountains inside. They
• 6:49
Speaker 5: literally had big hills and ducks and, like, a stream
• 6:54
Speaker 5: going through the middle. That's back when 95XIL actually used
• 6:58
Speaker 5: to broadcast from the Grand Central Mall. So, I mean,
• 7:02
Speaker 5: that was the place to be. And, yes, retail has changed.
• 7:05
Speaker 5: People buy more things off of Amazon and things of
• 7:09
Speaker 5: that nature. But I do think malls still hold a
• 7:11
Speaker 5: special place in West Virginia where those– a lot of
• 7:13
Speaker 5: those trends– I mean, here in West Virginia, we still–
• 7:17
Speaker 5: Like a physical newspaper, we still like to go to
• 7:19
Speaker 5: a physical place. And I think that's why people talk
• 7:23
  Speaker 5: about it.
• 7:23
Speaker 2: There will always be, I said on the show yesterday, Steve,
• 7:26
Speaker 2: and I've said it before, there will always be a
• 7:28
Speaker 2: place for when people just want to go look around.
• 7:30
Speaker 2: And especially in the capital city, when you come in
• 7:33
Speaker 2: and you come to the state basketball tournament, you come
• 7:35
Speaker 2: for a concert or whatever, most people aren't just going
• 7:36
Speaker 2: to go to the event and leave, especially with something
• 7:39
Speaker 2: like the state basketball tournament. I mean, you get these
• 7:42
Speaker 2: folks from all around the state of West Virginia, and
• 7:44
Speaker 2: it was just a place to go. So we'll see
• 7:46
Speaker 2: where it leads. from there. All right, Brad's lead story
• 7:48
Speaker 2: this morning, wvmetronews.com, and I know you and others have
• 7:50
Speaker 2: written a comment about it too. Our whole foray into
• 7:54
Speaker 2: the nuclear world, or so we thought. So I guess
• 7:58
Speaker 2: the state is out now. Well, at least short term.
• 8:02
Speaker 5: We are out of this Nuclear Life Cycle Innovation Center project,
• 8:07
Speaker 5: the governor, and I'm just going to say it chickened
• 8:09
Speaker 5: out because apparently attention was drawn to a thing that
• 8:12
Speaker 5: I thought was obvious and pretty well stated from the
• 8:14
Speaker 5: beginning that Part of this process was going to involve
• 8:17
Speaker 5: us at some point having to accept or store spent
• 8:22
Speaker 5: nuclear fuel or nuclear waste, as it's colloquially known. It's
• 8:27
Speaker 5: pretty safe to do that. It's done in a lot
• 8:30
Speaker 5: of places on site at nuclear power plants. Not a
• 8:33
Speaker 5: big deal, really, but it is a risk and people
• 8:36
Speaker 5: need to know about that risk. And frankly, the governor's
• 8:39
Speaker 5: office didn't prepare enough people for this process. And by
• 8:44
Speaker 5: the time Mike Toney's story came out in Gazette Mail,
• 8:46
Speaker 5: Brad's story came out right after that with Metro News.
• 8:50
Speaker 5: I mean, for whatever reason, the governor, A, wanted to
• 8:52
Speaker 5: yell at the media, but also wanted to say, well,
• 8:54
Speaker 5: we're not going to accept that, except there was a
• 8:56
Speaker 5: requirement to do it. I think once they realized it
• 8:59
Speaker 5: was a requirement, then he just backed out altogether. And why,
• 9:02
Speaker 5: I don't know. But is there still love for nuclear
• 9:05
Speaker 5: among some lawmakers? For sure, especially the ones that were
• 9:08
Speaker 5: in the legislature to help get rid of the nuclear moratorium,
• 9:11
Speaker 5: such as State Senator Eric Tarr, and even Delegate Kayla Young.
• 9:15
Speaker 5: It's a bipartisan thing. So Democrats and Republicans both see
• 9:19
Speaker 5: nuclear as a potential for the state, especially when you're
• 9:23
Speaker 5: talking about the new innovative technologies of small modular reactors.
• 9:27
Speaker 5: So Is there a future?
• 9:28
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 9:29
Speaker 5: But, man, we got some bridge building to do with
• 9:33
Speaker 5: the Department of Energy.
• 9:34
Speaker 2: Let me give you a quote here, and this has
• 9:37
Speaker 2: been widely reported. You've reported on it, I'm sure, as well.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: It's from State Treasurer Larry Pack, who, by the way,
• 9:43
Speaker 2: is going to be on Midday later today. He said
• 9:44
Speaker 2: in a statement, Stephen, West Virginia's future depends on a bold,
• 9:48
Speaker 2: all-in energy strategy, and that means we must leave the
• 9:51
Speaker 2: nation and energy production to drive local economic growth, in, quote,
• 9:55
Speaker 2: the statement coming after that notice of withdrawal for consideration
• 9:58
Speaker 2: by the administration. So, I mean, as you mentioned TAR,
• 10:01
Speaker 2: you mentioned, I know, Kaylee Young, who's made comments about
• 10:04
Speaker 2: that others have as well. So what happens next?
• 10:08
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, I think there still needs to be
• 10:10
Speaker 5: more education done, which can happen now, even though we're
• 10:13
Speaker 5: not going to be participating in this federal project. Education
• 10:17
Speaker 5: is the key. I mean, Nuclear storage of spent fuel
• 10:22
Speaker 5: is safe. It's got a safe track record, 100% safety
• 10:26
Speaker 5: record as far as that goes. And the technologies that
• 10:30
Speaker 5: go into this are great and can be really great
• 10:32
Speaker 5: for especially advanced manufacturing, which is something we would like
• 10:35
Speaker 5: to bring to West Virginia. And it's an important thing,
• 10:40
Speaker 5: and I think you're going to see that become part
• 10:42
Speaker 5: of people's plans going forward. And it's not a zero-sum game.
• 10:45
Speaker 5: I know the coal industry– Some in the coal industry
• 10:48
Speaker 5: think that you build that, then you're going to take
• 10:50
Speaker 5: away from coal, and that's not really how that works.
• 10:54
Speaker 5: So can we do all of this? Of course we can.
• 10:56
Speaker 5: And we should be advocating to do it versus running
• 10:59
  Speaker 5: away from it.
• 11:00
Speaker 2: Stephen Allen Adams is here. It is 918. The Dave
• 11:02
Speaker 2: Allen Show and 580 Live is brought to you in
• 11:04
Speaker 2: part by Morgan & Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
• 11:07
Speaker 2: If you're injured, visit ForThePeople.com. Stephen, State Navigate did some
• 11:10
Speaker 2: polling in two different Senate districts. District 1, think Northern Panhandle,
• 11:14
Speaker 2: and 8, think some Putnam, Kanawha, Roan, Sliver, Jackson, Clay.
• 11:19
Speaker 2: Did not bode well for Governor Morrissey. I mean, according
• 11:21
Speaker 2: to this, for what it's worth, Governor Morrissey's numbers are low.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: I mean, like Donald Trump low. Wilson wrote about it
• 11:29
Speaker 2: in his commentary posted on the website this morning. Survey
• 11:31
Speaker 2: found a majority of voters are dissatisfied with the governor's
• 11:35
Speaker 2: job performance so far. And as we head into the election, Stephen,
• 11:38
Speaker 2: next month, I found this interesting. District 8, where many
• 11:41
Speaker 2: people are listening to this show from this morning, 50
• 11:44
Speaker 2: percent people polled say they would be less likely to
• 11:48
Speaker 2: vote for a Morrissey-backed candidate. What do you make of that?
• 11:51
Speaker 5: I think it's really interesting. Now, you got to take
• 11:54
Speaker 5: some of those numbers with a grain of salt. Unfortunately,
• 11:59
Speaker 5: we don't really have access to good polling in this
• 12:03
Speaker 5: state like we used to. I know Rex Repass is
• 12:06
Speaker 5: sort of retired. So you got to take what you
• 12:09
Speaker 5: can kind of get. So you can quibble with the
• 12:12
Speaker 5: sample size or pardon me, some of the metrics of
• 12:16
Speaker 5: the whole thing. But I've also heard from people, lawmakers,
• 12:21
Speaker 5: candidates out there with internal polling that actually has the
• 12:24
Speaker 5: governor lower than what this poll says he is as
• 12:27
Speaker 5: far as job approval. So I think the governor has
• 12:31
Speaker 5: a real problem. I know that they've got people out
• 12:33
Speaker 5: there right now trying to push back against these numbers,
• 12:35
Speaker 5: but it kind of goes along with what I'm hearing.
• 12:40
Speaker 5: And I think it will cause problems if For example,
• 12:44
Speaker 5: have you seen– I think we saw the governor recently
• 12:48
Speaker 5: with State Senator Laura Wakeham Chapman in the first senatorial
• 12:51
Speaker 5: district up north. Have you seen him down here recently
• 12:54
Speaker 5: with Lance Wheeler? Not that I've seen. No, it happened
• 12:58
Speaker 5: a little bit going into the primary. Lance Wheeler, of course,
• 13:02
Speaker 5: is heavily backed by Americans for Prosperity, West Virginia. I
• 13:05
Speaker 5: know because I've already got four mailers from him in
• 13:08
  Speaker 5: my mailbox.
• 13:09
  Speaker 8: Yeah.
• 13:10
Speaker 5: But yeah, I don't know that you're going to see
• 13:12
Speaker 5: Patrick Morrissey's face on an AFP mailer for Lance Wheeler,
• 13:16
Speaker 5: probably because I have a feeling they're seeing that same data.
• 13:20
Speaker 2: So what do you make of my homeland, Logan County,
• 13:24
  Speaker 2: flipping to Republican?
• 13:26
Speaker 5: It's a big deal, especially in Logan County, especially when
• 13:29
Speaker 5: you know the history, the politics of Logan County. I mean,
• 13:34
Speaker 5: very much Democratic stronghold. I mean, the most recent Democratic
• 13:39
Speaker 5: governor that stayed a Democratic governor, Earl Ray Tomlin. That
• 13:44
Speaker 5: wasn't that long ago. It wasn't that long ago that
• 13:47
Speaker 5: we were sending Art Kirkendall up here for the state
• 13:49
Speaker 5: Senate and Ron Stallings and all the great people of
• 13:56
Speaker 5: Democratic fame from Logan County. So that's a pretty big
• 14:00
Speaker 5: milestone for sure. And you're seeing that happen across southern
• 14:04
Speaker 5: West Virginia. But I would caution Republicans that continue to
• 14:09
Speaker 5: do the whole RINO thing or talk about people being
• 14:13
Speaker 5: recent Democrats. Well, folks, it's only been since 2021 that
• 14:17
Speaker 5: the voter registration has gone to majority Republicans. Everybody that
• 14:22
Speaker 5: is on there are former Democrats. So I wouldn't try
• 14:27
Speaker 5: to throw that moniker around. I would try to avoid
• 14:30
Speaker 5: that because they could also get disillusioned and easily go
• 14:33
Speaker 5: back the other direction, too.
• 14:34
Speaker 2: I saw Senator Justice, Stephen, is in Jackson County today.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: He's at the Constellation plant in Ravenswood later. He's going
• 14:39
Speaker 2: to be at Ripley High, all over the place. We
• 14:42
Speaker 2: know the governor's all over the place. State Treasurer Larry
• 14:45
Speaker 2: Pacus is going to be on the show later today
• 14:47
Speaker 2: at midday. He is Secretary of State Chris Warner. going
• 14:50
Speaker 2: all over the state, people jockeying for position for 2028,
• 14:52
  Speaker 2: in your opinion?
• 14:53
Speaker 5: Oh yeah, for sure.
• 14:54
  Speaker 2: Uh, for sure.
• 14:55
Speaker 5: Uh, I, I think especially, uh, look, these people probably
• 14:59
Speaker 5: have their own internal polling too. They're seeing governor Morrissey's
• 15:02
Speaker 5: numbers and yeah, you're going to see the groundwork, uh,
• 15:06
Speaker 5: be laid and being laid. I think you've seen that
• 15:09
Speaker 5: certainly with, uh, Larry Pack and Chris Warner for sure. Uh,
• 15:13
Speaker 5: with some of their events and the things that they've done, uh,
• 15:16
Speaker 5: And now that U.S. Senator Jim Justice has made it
• 15:19
Speaker 5: pretty clear that the chances of him jumping in the
• 15:23
Speaker 5: run for governor after this primary is over are pretty good.
• 15:28
Speaker 5: So they got to start getting the groundwork going because
• 15:31
Speaker 5: whether they think Morrissey is weak or not, Morrissey has
• 15:34
Speaker 5: money and he has third party groups both in the
• 15:37
Speaker 5: state and outside the state that will back him and
• 15:40
Speaker 5: fund fundraise on his behalf. So that's going to be
• 15:43
  Speaker 5: an expensive race.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: Well, and we definitely know that if the folks in
• 15:46
Speaker 2: Napa Valley have anything to say about it. So, Stephen
• 15:49

• 16:02
Speaker 2: hang out with Senator Johnson?
• 16:03
Speaker 5: I'm going to Constellium as soon as we're done here. So, yeah,
• 16:07
Speaker 5: maybe I'll get the senator to talk more about the
• 16:10
  Speaker 5: potential run.
• 16:10
Speaker 2: All right. Stephen Allen Adams, always a pleasure to have

Speaker 2: the Kanawha Mall had a huge free parking lot as well,
• 18:17
Speaker 2: along with Hills and Ryan's Buffet, and it collapsed years
• 18:20

  Speaker 2: just parking.
• 18:23
  Speaker 4: Agreed.
• 18:24
  Speaker 8: Agreed.
• 18:25
Speaker 2: Text, Morrissey giving a master class on how to be
• 18:27
  Speaker 2: a terrible governor. I can't think of something good he's
• 18:30
Speaker 2: done or anyone who has anything good to say about him.
• 18:32
Speaker 2: Only people who have good things to say about Governor
• 18:34
Speaker 2: Pat are the donors in Napa Valley County. California, according
• 18:38
Speaker 2: to a texter. Tex says, you mean to tell me
• 18:41
Speaker 2: the mayor can't wave a magic wand and restore the
• 18:44
Speaker 2: town center to its glory? No, the mayor cannot. Mayor Goodwin,
• 18:48
Speaker 2: Mayor Jones, Mayor Goldman, Mayor McDuck, whomever. No one can
• 18:55
Speaker 2: do that. I don't even know who Mayor McDuck is.
• 18:57
Speaker 2: I'll just make that up. Andrew Donaldson is here. How
• 19:01
  Speaker 2: you doing, man?
• 19:02
Speaker 8: I would vote for Mayor McDuck depending on where he's
• 19:04
Speaker 8: at on certain things like urban policy and regulatory reform.
• 19:08
Speaker 8: We could get Scrooge out of the money pit, get
• 19:09
Speaker 8: him to maybe run as an independent. That could work.
• 19:11
  Speaker 2: I mean, I'm thinking. I'm thinking. All right. So you're
• 19:15
Speaker 2: a West Virginia native, fellow food guy. It's always a
• 19:18
Speaker 2: pleasure to have you on the show. And since, like
• 19:21
Speaker 2: Stephen Allen Adams and myself, you hail from a small
• 19:24
Speaker 2: town in West Virginia, I'm going to give, like I said,
• 19:26
Speaker 2: it's like a celebrity died. You know, everybody's, what are
• 19:29
Speaker 2: your thoughts on Senator so-and-so? So what are your thoughts
• 19:32
Speaker 2: on the town center as a young kid of a
• 19:34
Speaker 2: boy coming from where you come from in West Virginia?
• 19:37
Speaker 8: Yeah, if you were really lucky, dad might let you
• 19:40
Speaker 8: go on a ride to Charleston when he had to
• 19:41
Speaker 8: do something in Charleston. And if you got really, really lucky,
• 19:44
Speaker 8: he might let you go to the mall in Charleston.
• 19:46
Speaker 8: And if you got super lucky, like four times in
• 19:48
Speaker 8: your life, you got to go to fifth quarter for
• 19:50
Speaker 8: lunch and or dinner afterwards because that was the big
• 19:52
Speaker 8: doing so yeah we we grew up where that was
• 19:55
Speaker 8: the big trip if you got to go to the
• 19:56
Speaker 8: town center mall and you know when you know high
• 19:58
Speaker 8: school we do the formal dinners and stuff we always
• 20:01
Speaker 8: did it downtown you go walk around the mall all
• 20:03
Speaker 8: dressed up looking silly and then you'd go eat and
• 20:05
Speaker 8: things like this you know you could go You know,
• 20:08
Speaker 8: I'm old enough to remember you could, you know, go
• 20:09
Speaker 8: get the Monte Cristo, Bennegan's, all that kind of stuff. Look,
• 20:12
Speaker 8: it feels like we've been doing this, the mall's going
• 20:14
Speaker 8: to close thing for 20 years on and off in
• 20:16
Speaker 8: a lot of different ways and varieties. There's no version
• 20:19
Speaker 8: of this that isn't some sort of mismanagement. Some of
• 20:21
Speaker 8: it sometimes, remember, but the thing that really makes you
• 20:24
Speaker 8: sad is so much of Charleston is doing so well.
• 20:26
Speaker 8: There's so much redevelopment, like Stephen was talking about, you know,
• 20:29
Speaker 8: Capitol Street. the riverfront, Summer Street. There's so much good
• 20:33
Speaker 8: stuff going. It's just like this glaring, sucking chest wound,
• 20:36
Speaker 8: not only to the city, but to the state, because
• 20:37
Speaker 8: it is the capital of the state, that people haven't
• 20:40
Speaker 8: figured out how to make this thing work. And I
• 20:41
Speaker 8: know there's the parking thing. There's the on and off
• 20:43
Speaker 8: again relationship with the Civic Center. It's a lot of
• 20:46
Speaker 8: money to do downtown development. There's a lot of regulatory stuff.
• 20:49
Speaker 8: There's a lot of politics. That's all part of it.
• 20:51
Speaker 8: But it's just sad to people. And I'm about 10
• 20:53
Speaker 8: years younger than you. It's just sad to people my age. Like,
• 20:56
Speaker 8: my kids never got to go to the town center
• 20:57
Speaker 8: mall like I did.
• 20:58
Speaker 2: Why is everybody 10 years younger than I am? I mean,
• 21:01
  Speaker 2: Amanda is 10 years younger than I am. You're 10
• 21:03
Speaker 2: years younger than I am. Steven's 10 years younger than
• 21:05
  Speaker 2: I am. TJ's 10 years. I mean, is every, I mean,
• 21:08
Speaker 2: you know, It's like, thank God I got Chris and
• 21:11
Speaker 2: Fred and Jeff Jenkins in this building. That's all I
• 21:15
  Speaker 2: have to say.
• 21:16
Speaker 8: You are the wise older voice mentoring us, the coming generation.
• 21:20
Speaker 8: So think of it that way.
• 21:21
Speaker 2: By the way, somebody said they thought I meant Mayor McCheese.
• 21:24
Speaker 2: I don't know where I came up with Mayor McDuck.
• 21:26
Speaker 2: It just kind of came off the top of my head.
• 21:28
Speaker 2: Is that a thing even? Things come out of my head, man,
• 21:31
Speaker 2: that I don't know where they come from. I mean,
• 21:33
  Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know. And I can't blame
• 21:37
Speaker 2: the cancer treatments, man, because they were there long before that.
• 21:40
Speaker 2: Just things just come out of my mouth and out
• 21:42
Speaker 2: of my head. I don't know where the heck they
• 21:43
  Speaker 2: come from.
• 21:44
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 21:45
Speaker 2: So was it unfair of me earlier, Andrew, to say
• 21:49
Speaker 2: that in the polling I referenced earlier, the Governor Morrissey's
• 21:53
Speaker 2: numbers were down in the low ranges like President Trump?
• 21:55
Speaker 2: Because I think somebody took an issue with me with
• 21:57
  Speaker 2: me saying that.
• 21:59
Speaker 8: Well, you can't ever say President Trump without somebody taking
• 22:01
Speaker 8: issue one way or the other, no matter what comes
• 22:03
Speaker 8: after that qualifier, the rest of the sentence, because that's
• 22:06
Speaker 8: just the world we live in. There's some nuance here now.
• 22:09
Speaker 8: Like you talk about the Senate districts here, you know,
• 22:11
Speaker 8: Senate District 8 is an area that, you know, Governor
• 22:13
Speaker 8: Morsi didn't do well in anyway. So you can you know,
• 22:16
Speaker 8: there's a little bit of nuance to things like that. But, yeah,
• 22:19
Speaker 8: there's a popularity problem with the governor. Now, the problem
• 22:22
Speaker 8: people get to is they understand President Trump is still
• 22:25
Speaker 8: immensely popular. in deep red West Virginia, which, as you
• 22:29
Speaker 8: pointed out, is still a recent development. But, you know,
• 22:32
Speaker 8: we also know in the midterms, you know, remember the
• 22:34
  Speaker 8: 2018 midterms, there's about 30-some percent of Trump voters didn't
• 22:37
Speaker 8: turn out again, and he was way more popular than then.
• 22:40
Speaker 8: Midterm elections are different, and every state's a little different.
• 22:43
Speaker 8: And the other number nobody's talking about, even though with
• 22:45
Speaker 8: these election numbers, is that independent number is the one
• 22:48
Speaker 8: people need to really start paying attention to, because those
• 22:50
Speaker 8: are the people that are They've had it with both
• 22:53
Speaker 8: of them, and both parties aren't really doing a whole
• 22:55
Speaker 8: lot to cater to them, folks. And when we get
• 22:57
Speaker 8: the full data, Stephen Allen Adams was really correct to
• 23:01
Speaker 8: kind of chastise all of us that we need to
• 23:03
Speaker 8: wait on this data for another two weeks until it's
• 23:04
Speaker 8: really settled. But when that data comes out, look at
• 23:07
Speaker 8: that independent number, because that's how supermajorities start becoming majorities,
• 23:10
Speaker 8: start becoming competitive. It's not just people switching red to blue.
• 23:14
Speaker 8: people fed up with both, and then they pick and
• 23:17
Speaker 8: choose who they want to vote for. We saw some
• 23:18
Speaker 8: of that in the primaries with the Supreme Court cases,
• 23:21
Speaker 8: and pay attention to that independent number.
• 23:23
Speaker 2: I talked to State Senator Rupi Phillips on the show yesterday. He,
• 23:26
Speaker 2: of course, is a Logan County native as well. He's
• 23:28
Speaker 2: somebody who started out as a Democrat and then switched
• 23:30
Speaker 2: to independent, now is a Republican. And I had him
• 23:33
Speaker 2: on yesterday on Midday, Amanda and I, to talk about
• 23:36
Speaker 2: that shift in Logan County, which is now a Republican county.
• 23:39
Speaker 2: I did not realize this until I had a conversation
• 23:42
Speaker 2: with with the county clerk down there, John Turner, who's
• 23:44
Speaker 2: been the county clerk since 07, that every elected office
• 23:48
Speaker 2: in Logan County is now held by a Republican. And again,
• 23:52
Speaker 2: how historic this is, I was a registered Republican, you know,
• 23:58
Speaker 2: back in the early 1990s. They used to try to
• 24:00
Speaker 2: get me to take off work from the radio station
• 24:02
Speaker 2: where I was working in there, WVW. to work the
• 24:05
Speaker 2: polls because they didn't have enough poll workers that were Republicans.
• 24:09
Speaker 2: And now every elected position, now we're going to kind of,
• 24:12
Speaker 2: you know, take out the nonpartisan stuff, you know, the
• 24:14
Speaker 2: board and stuff like that, because I don't know exactly
• 24:17
Speaker 2: what all those folks, what their party, but as far
• 24:20
Speaker 2: as elected with a number, with a letter after their name,
• 24:23
Speaker 2: every position in Logan County is now held by Republican.
• 24:27
Speaker 2: That is something that would have been unheard of 15,
• 24:32
Speaker 2: 20 years ago, unheard of Andrew.
• 24:34
Speaker 8: Yeah, and I've told the story on air and on
• 24:36
Speaker 8: your very program before. When I went to register to
• 24:38
Speaker 8: vote in 1998 for the first time, they didn't ask me.
• 24:41
Speaker 8: They just did it. They didn't ask for party affiliation
• 24:44
Speaker 8: in Nicholas County because why would you? There was no
• 24:46
Speaker 8: Republican Party. It did not exist. They just signed you
• 24:48
Speaker 8: up as a Democrat. They just hand you the party.
• 24:50
Speaker 8: If you tried to go vote Republican, they'd probably look
• 24:52
Speaker 8: at you weird and not know how to do it. And,
• 24:54
Speaker 8: you know, again, we were joking about me being younger
• 24:56
Speaker 8: than you. This is not that long ago. And things
• 24:59
Speaker 8: change quickly. And I would just, you know, encourage our
• 25:02
Speaker 8: Republican friends. Remember, like, hey, you came up pretty quick.
• 25:05
Speaker 8: It was gradually then suddenly the backside of that mountain
• 25:08
Speaker 8: can go the same way. Now, I don't think the
• 25:09
Speaker 8: state's going to flip black, cobalt blue any time in
• 25:12
Speaker 8: our lifetimes. But could this get more competitive? Could the
• 25:14
Speaker 8: independents and the Democrats and some disaffected Republicans start putting
• 25:18
Speaker 8: electoral coalitions together to start doing some things? Yeah, I
• 25:21
Speaker 8: think we're going to start seeing that in the near future.
• 25:23
Speaker 2: And I mentioned this. They brought me on talk line yesterday.
• 25:26
Speaker 2: And again, we're talking with Andrew Donaldson. I have a
• 25:28
Speaker 2: very good friend of mine who is running for House
• 25:30
Speaker 2: of Delegates down there. And this is not an endorsement
• 25:32
Speaker 2: by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just telling the story.
• 25:34
Speaker 2: He was actually he was a teacher of mine going
• 25:37
Speaker 2: back to my junior high days. That's how you know
• 25:39
Speaker 2: you're old when you call it junior high, not middle school.
• 25:42
Speaker 2: He's running for House of Delegates down there as a Democrat.
• 25:45
Speaker 2: And he's an old school Democrat. West Virginia Democrat. And
• 25:47
Speaker 2: I had a chance to talk to him a couple
• 25:49
Speaker 2: of months ago, ask him, he's going to, you know,
• 25:51
Speaker 2: he's got the incumbent down there. It's very popular Republican.
• 25:55
Speaker 2: And I said, so how's the race going? He said, well,
• 25:58
Speaker 2: you know, Dave, I'm just going to go tell my story.
• 25:59
Speaker 2: And I have nothing against my opponent. I just think
• 26:02
Speaker 2: that I'm the better choice and so on and so forth.
• 26:05
Speaker 2: And I said, I still call him coach. I said,
• 26:07
Speaker 2: do you realize how difficult it is going to be
• 26:10
Speaker 2: because you had that D after your name? He said, well,
• 26:12
Speaker 2: I get that. But people know me, and I'm well-respected
• 26:16
Speaker 2: in the community, which he is, by the way, a very,
• 26:19
Speaker 2: very well-respected member of the community. But I haven't seen
• 26:23
Speaker 2: any advertising from down there. I haven't had a chance
• 26:27
Speaker 2: to go on the stream and listen to the radio
• 26:28
Speaker 2: station where I worked for so many years. But I
• 26:30
Speaker 2: promise you that they are painting him as a vote
• 26:35
Speaker 2: for this person as a Democrat. This is a vote
• 26:39
Speaker 2: for AOC. This is a vote for liberalism, so on
• 26:43
Speaker 2: and so forth. And that's just kind of where we
• 26:45
Speaker 2: are right now. And even if you know this guy,
• 26:48
Speaker 2: he couldn't be any further than anything related to the
• 26:51
Speaker 2: National Democratic Party. He's an old school West Virginia Democrat.
• 26:56
Speaker 2: And unfortunately, with all due respect, I don't totally like
• 27:00
Speaker 2: his chances, to be honest with you. And it's a shame.
• 27:04
Speaker 8: No, and this is a very unhealthy thing where everything's
• 27:06
Speaker 8: gotten nationalized. Now, some of it's the candidate's own fault
• 27:08
Speaker 8: because It's easy to just do whatever the national folks
• 27:11
Speaker 8: are doing. That also gives you access to money streams
• 27:13
Speaker 8: a lot of the times, fundraising, things like that. You
• 27:15
Speaker 8: get national help. But it used to be a thing
• 27:18
Speaker 8: where you could have different kinds of people locally that
• 27:20
Speaker 8: was different than national parties. And this is something, you know,
• 27:23
Speaker 8: our Republican friends may have to start looking at in
• 27:25
Speaker 8: the next couple of years. Like, OK, if the president's
• 27:27
Speaker 8: popularity keeps coming down, you might need to have some
• 27:30
Speaker 8: policies other than just I support Donald Trump. What do
• 27:33
Speaker 8: you think about local stuff? What do you think about water?
• 27:35
Speaker 8: What do you think about infrastructure? And we have a
• 27:37
Speaker 8: lot of candidates to do that, and we've got a
• 27:38
Speaker 8: lot of good GOP officeholders that already have figured that
• 27:41
Speaker 8: part out, but some of them don't. And you're going
• 27:43
Speaker 8: to see everything old and new again. You're going to
• 27:45
Speaker 8: see Democratic people in West Virginia going, look, I don't
• 27:47
Speaker 8: agree with the National Party on this, this, and this,
• 27:50
Speaker 8: but I'm a West Virginian. Here's where I believe this, this,
• 27:52
Speaker 8: and this, and they're going to start rebuilding their brand.
• 27:54
Speaker 8: And the Democratic Party in West Virginia, there's still a
• 27:56
Speaker 8: couple cycles from being statewide candidates. viable but they're doing
• 28:00
Speaker 8: the infrastructure things like you said and it's just getting
• 28:02
Speaker 8: candidates like that's kind of the first couple steps of
• 28:04
Speaker 8: just going no i'm local i'm going to run i
• 28:06
Speaker 8: don't care what anybody else thinks this is what i
• 28:08
Speaker 8: stand for and they're probably going to get blasted up
• 28:10
Speaker 8: from but over time that'll probably bear some fruit what
• 28:13
Speaker 8: do you think's going.
• 28:13
Speaker 2: To happen in the midterms here because i mean every
• 28:16
Speaker 2: every national pundit is is saying this is not going
• 28:20
Speaker 2: to be pretty for the republican party andrew uh what's
• 28:23
Speaker 2: going to happen i mean what do you think you're
• 28:25
Speaker 2: you're down in in north carolina right i mean uh
• 28:28
Speaker 2: That's where you are, right.
• 28:29
  Speaker 9: North Carolina?
• 28:30
Speaker 8: Today, I'm down here, yeah.
• 28:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, you're all over the place, man. You're in Canada.
• 28:32
  Speaker 2: I mean, I don't even know what the hell you're
• 28:34
Speaker 2: doing up there. But anyway, what's going to happen next month,
• 28:38
Speaker 2: in your opinion, as far as the midterms as it
• 28:40
Speaker 2: comes to flipping houses and so on and so forth?
• 28:43
Speaker 8: Yeah, well, President Trump made sure I get good Canadian
• 28:46
Speaker 8: commentary business lately, so thank you very much, President Trump.
• 28:49
Speaker 8: I get to do that a lot lately. They're calling
• 28:50
Speaker 8: me all the time. It's going to be ugly. Remember,
• 28:54
Speaker 8: even the Senate races and the House races, these are
• 28:56
Speaker 8: still local races. Candidates matter. There's a lot of local
• 28:59
Speaker 8: issues that don't fit perfectly in the national narrative, so
• 29:01
Speaker 8: we've got to be a little careful with it. It
• 29:03
Speaker 8: is going to be ugly. There is this thing, though.
• 29:05
Speaker 8: Polling has been off in a lot of these primary races.
• 29:08
Speaker 8: And you had Chas Nuttycomb, who just did the data.
• 29:10
Speaker 8: You were citing about President Morrissey. That came from Chas Nuttycomb.
• 29:13
Speaker 8: He's been talking about it. He just put a thing
• 29:15
Speaker 8: out yesterday. He's like, hey, we've got Republicans in Kansas
• 29:17
Speaker 8: won't talk to us. And, of course, the Senate race
• 29:20
Speaker 8: out there with Senator Marshall is looking really iffy now.
• 29:22
Speaker 8: They're not talking to us, so that means they're not
• 29:24
Speaker 8: talking to us and they're going to show up, or
• 29:26
Speaker 8: they're not talking to us and they're so mad they're
• 29:27
Speaker 8: going to stay home. They don't know. Remember that figure
• 29:29
Speaker 8: I just quoted you, the 2018 midterms? We know if
• 29:33
Speaker 8: Donald Trump is not on the ballot, there's a certain
• 29:34
Speaker 8: percentage of voters that only come out for Donald Trump
• 29:36
Speaker 8: because they're Donald Trump fans and supporters. What's that number
• 29:39
Speaker 8: going to be? Because if that number is 25, 30 percent,
• 29:42
Speaker 8: that's one kind of a wave. If that number is 40, 50,
• 29:45
Speaker 8: 60 percent, now you're talking historic kind of stuff. It's
• 29:48
Speaker 8: going to be ugly. It's just shades of ugly and
• 29:50
Speaker 8: how ugly it's going to get. But pay attention to
• 29:52
Speaker 8: those numbers. It's Who's mad, and is this polling accurate
• 29:56
Speaker 8: or not? Because I think we've got a lot of
• 29:58
Speaker 8: polls that are a little iffy right now.
• 30:18
Speaker 2: This earlier in this week, but last week, late last
• 30:21
Speaker 2: week and in the weekend, I was in Virginia, Virginia
• 30:24
Speaker 2: Beach to be exact. My wife and I went down
• 30:25
Speaker 2: for a little brief mini vacation and it was interesting
• 30:29
Speaker 2: to see, interesting to me as a West Virginia guy,
• 30:32
Speaker 2: to see these negative TV ads featuring President Trump as
• 30:36
Speaker 2: in a vote for, fill in name here, is a
• 30:40
Speaker 2: rubber stamp for Donald Trump. Now, whereas West Virginians, I mean,
• 30:45
Speaker 2: you know this as well as I do, my guy.
• 30:47
Speaker 2: I mean, Republicans in this state would gut their mothers
• 30:50
Speaker 2: like a carp to be a rubber stamp or to
• 30:53
Speaker 2: be perceived as a rubber stamp for President Trump. As
• 30:56
Speaker 2: I said, you're down there. What's the vibe?
• 31:00
  Speaker 8: It's a little bit of both. There's a lot of
• 31:03
Speaker 8: questionable talking about political average. You just talked about this
• 31:07
Speaker 8: with Stephen. The political advertising, I really wonder if we
• 31:10
Speaker 8: haven't reached a saturation point on a lot of this
• 31:12
Speaker 8: stuff where it's just not mattering and people are more
• 31:15
Speaker 8: annoyed by it, even if they agree with it or
• 31:16
Speaker 8: disagree with it. They just kind of started to zone
• 31:19
Speaker 8: it out as white noise because it's so ubiquitous. But yeah,
• 31:23
Speaker 8: if you're in a really hotly contested place with Senate
• 31:26
Speaker 8: races and governor races going like a North Carolina, like
• 31:29
Speaker 8: out in Kansas, Florida right now, Texas, we all know
• 31:32
Speaker 8: it's kind of the big ticket one. Everybody's watching because
• 31:34
Speaker 8: it's this year. It's finally going to go blue. We're
• 31:36
Speaker 8: going to get a seat.
• 31:37
  Speaker 5: Yay.
• 31:37
Speaker 8: And then you get places like Georgia where it looks
• 31:39
Speaker 8: like the Senate race may go may stay blue, but
• 31:41
Speaker 8: the governor might stay red. You know, these things don't
• 31:45
Speaker 8: really make sense when you look at just the outside advertising,
• 31:48
Speaker 8: which goes back to what we're just saying. These are
• 31:50
Speaker 8: still local elections and local issues and candidate quality really,
• 31:53
Speaker 8: really matters. So when you look at those things and
• 31:56
Speaker 8: you see those ads, number one, remember that people are
• 31:58
Speaker 8: kind of sick of ads, even the ones they agree with.
• 32:00
Speaker 8: Number two is this is a money issue. They literally
• 32:03
Speaker 8: have more campaign money than they know how to spend,
• 32:05
Speaker 8: especially this late in the race where they're just carpet
• 32:07
Speaker 8: bombing them. I don't know if the ads are actually
• 32:09
Speaker 8: all that effective anymore, whether they're pro for or against
• 32:12
Speaker 8: or which way or indifferent or however Governor Jim Justice
• 32:15
  Speaker 8: would say that.
• 32:15
Speaker 2: Well, you know what? When it comes to advertising, what
• 32:18
Speaker 2: is effective? Always radio advertising. Just throwing it out there. Always, always,
• 32:22
Speaker 2: always with your favorite WVRC media sales reps. Just throwing
• 32:26
Speaker 2: it out there. We can do digital. We can do
• 32:28
Speaker 2: on air. We can do all the stations. Just throwing
• 32:30
Speaker 2: it out there, right?
• 32:32
Speaker 8: Yeah, you can even get Dave Allen to read it
• 32:33
  Speaker 8: for a little.
• 32:36
Speaker 2: I don't do political ads. That's one thing that
• 32:39
Speaker 2: I have very little integrity left is because I'm not
• 32:41
  Speaker 2: a journalist. I'm a talking head. I'm a whatever it
• 32:44
  Speaker 2: is I am. One thing I don't do is I
• 32:46
Speaker 2: don't do political ads. I will not do that because
• 32:49
  Speaker 2: I think that's a little bit. That's a little bit,
• 32:51
  Speaker 2: that's a bridge too far. But I mean, I'll shill
• 32:53
Speaker 2: for anything else, man. I mean, I don't really care.
• 32:56
Speaker 2: I'll shill for anything, but not political ads. I've had
• 32:59
Speaker 2: to turn down a few of my friends that I
• 33:01
  Speaker 2: can't do.
• 33:01
Speaker 8: Oh, yeah. I have endorsed one person ever in the
• 33:05
Speaker 8: history of ever, and it was his past primary, and
• 33:07
Speaker 8: they lost. So I'll just let my listeners stay out
• 33:09
Speaker 8: of it. And that's just because it's somebody I've known
• 33:12
Speaker 8: literally all my life, grew up, know they're an outstanding individual.
• 33:15
Speaker 8: That's the only time I've ever publicly endorsed anybody, and
• 33:17
  Speaker 8: they lost.
• 33:17
Speaker 2: Well, I publicly endorsed my buddy Paul in high school
• 33:22
Speaker 2: because he promised that we would have a keg party
• 33:24
Speaker 2: every Friday night if he won vice president, and he won.
• 33:28
Speaker 2: And spoiler alert, there wasn't a keg party every Friday night.
• 33:33
Speaker 2: All right, Paul, you owe us all these years later.
• 33:36
Speaker 8: You're not saying there was partying in Logan, were you?
• 33:38
Speaker 2: No, no, no. All right, Andrew, it's always a pleasure
• 33:43
Speaker 2: to have you on the show. You're a fantastic follow
• 33:45
Speaker 2: on X as well. So tell people where they can
• 33:47
Speaker 2: follow you, my friend.
• 33:48
Speaker 8: Yeah, Hurtel Media is one-stop shopping. That'll get you to
• 33:51
Speaker 8: all the podcasts, all the videos, all the YouTubes, all that.
• 33:53
Speaker 8: And anytime he'll let me, always happy to talk to
• 33:55
Speaker 8: the great Dave Allen, Radio Hall of Famer and excellent pitchman, apparently.
• 33:59
Speaker 2: Not Hall of Famer yet. That's not until the end
• 34:01
Speaker 2: of October. There's still going to be a scandal. I'm
• 34:03
  Speaker 2: predicting it.
• 34:03
  Speaker 8: You're a shoo-in. You like it.
• 34:06
Speaker 2: We'll see. Thank you, my friend. I appreciate it.
• 34:09
Speaker 8: Thank you, sir. Anytime.
• 34:10
Speaker 2: All right. It is a Wednesday morning. And parents, if

• 35:04
Speaker 7: a new HVAC system from Best Virginia Heating and Cooling.
• 35:07
Speaker 7: During the inspection of our old unit, their technician discovered
• 35:10
Speaker 7: a crack in the heat exchanger that was slowly leaking
• 35:13
Speaker 7: carbon monoxide into our home. From that moment on, we

• 35:35
Speaker 3: We know how polarizing politics has become. More than ever,

• 35:42
Speaker 3: a record on being that kind of person. Whether it's

• 37:39
Speaker 2: hurt you. Text says, as long as Patrick Morrissey's governor,
• 37:42
Speaker 2: Napa Valley money will be influencing, if not guiding, West
• 37:45
Speaker 2: Virginia policy. Is Pat to the biggest mistake West Virginia
• 37:48
Speaker 2: has chosen for governor, says the texter. Well, I mean,
• 37:52
Speaker 2: I don't know that I'm going to go that far.
• 37:54
Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not going to weigh in on that
• 37:55
  Speaker 2: either way, but I, but I, I, um, no, I don't, um,
• 38:00
Speaker 2: I mean, when you see and look, this is not
• 38:02
Speaker 2: an indictment on Patrick Morrissey. OK, this is the same
• 38:05
Speaker 2: with every candidate, Republican, Democrat, whatever. When so much outside money,
• 38:11
Speaker 2: in my opinion, comes into elections like it does again,
• 38:14
Speaker 2: this is not a Patrick Morrissey thing. It could be
• 38:17
Speaker 2: in fill in name here, man, as far as candidates go, Republican, Democrat, liberal, conservative.
• 38:21
Speaker 2: When so much outside money comes in, you got to
• 38:25
Speaker 2: start wondering. what do they want in return? And I
• 38:29
Speaker 2: know that's the most simple thing in the world of politics,
• 38:31
Speaker 2: and I get it. You don't run any campaign for
• 38:35
Speaker 2: any office anywhere in America without having a couple hundred
• 38:39
Speaker 2: thousand dollars, period. You want to be on a school board,
• 38:41
Speaker 2: you better have a couple hundred thousand dollars. You want
• 38:44
Speaker 2: to run for house, you want to run for mayor,
• 38:46
Speaker 2: unless you're in one of the smallest towns ever, you
• 38:49
Speaker 2: better plan on having a couple hundred thousand dollars in
• 38:51
Speaker 2: the bank. And a lot of it's local, but a
• 38:53
Speaker 2: lot of it comes from out of state as well.
• 38:54
Speaker 2: And so Why is it that people in all these
• 38:57
Speaker 2: faraway locations pump all this money into a state like
• 39:01
Speaker 2: West Virginia or any other small state for that matter
• 39:03
Speaker 2: that's really in the big scheme of things not important?
• 39:06
Speaker 2: Because they want something. That's why it's done. And that's politics,
• 39:10
Speaker 2: my friends, in the year of our Lord, 2026. Coming
• 39:15
Speaker 2: up later today, Metro News Midday presented by Salango Law.
• 39:18
Speaker 2: State Treasurer Larry Pack, I mentioned him earlier, is going
• 39:21
Speaker 2: to be on the show today. Old friend George Manahan
• 39:23
Speaker 2: is going to stop by the show. Fred Persinger is
• 39:25
Speaker 2: here to preview tonight's high school sports line. Wednesday night,
• 39:28
Speaker 2: as far as we're concerned, kicks off high school. football
• 39:30
Speaker 2: with the high school sports line 706 tonight on the
• 39:33
Speaker 2: WCHS network and on Metro News as well. Wednesday also
• 39:38
Speaker 2: means we introduce you to this week's wonderful West Virginian.
• 39:41
Speaker 2: Dave Wilson is going to stop by with his commentary
• 39:44
Speaker 2: that we talked about a little bit earlier. and more
• 39:47
Speaker 2: coming up on the show today. Now, as far as
• 39:48
Speaker 2: talk line goes, Mr. Meadows is on vacation for a
• 39:51
Speaker 2: couple days. He's going to be back in the swing
• 39:53
Speaker 2: of things, I understand, on Monday. So Wilson will be
• 39:55
Speaker 2: flying the ship solo coming up at 10.06. And Amanda
• 39:59
Speaker 2: and I will take over Metro News Midday coming up
• 40:02
  Speaker 2: at 2 o'clock today. And, of course, I mean, I'm
• 40:04
Speaker 2: starting at noon, I should say, till 2. And then
• 40:06
Speaker 2: after 2, it is hotline with Coop, Ryan, and Weekly,
• 40:10
Speaker 2: and the entire show.
• 40:12
  Speaker 8: Gang.
• 40:12
Speaker 2: Text, going to the food court arcade was so awesome.
• 40:18
Speaker 2: I said that earlier. I mean, you know, with me,
• 40:20
Speaker 2: it's like everything in the world almost relates either to
• 40:23
Speaker 2: sports or food, and normally it's food. But that was
• 40:26
Speaker 2: the thing I remember. The first, and I don't remember
• 40:28
Speaker 2: what year that I first went to the town center.
• 40:31
Speaker 2: Probably not the first year it opened, I'll be honest
• 40:33
Speaker 2: with you. Maybe, I don't know, the first time I
• 40:35
Speaker 2: ever went to the Charleston Town Center. But the thing
• 40:38
Speaker 2: that— excuse me, I'm sorry, I'm really struggling this morning. The
• 40:41
Speaker 2: thing that really, really appealed to me as a— I was
• 40:45
Speaker 2: a foodie at 13 years old, okay? I mean, I was.
• 40:50
Speaker 2: And just walking up to that picnic place, man, and
• 40:52
Speaker 2: just looking around at all the choices and all the
• 40:55
Speaker 2: things that we didn't have back home in Logan County.
• 40:58
Speaker 2: And I remember, you know, getting Graziano's Pizza and— And,
• 41:02
Speaker 2: you know, the, the Creek place and, uh, and all, and,
• 41:05
Speaker 2: and all it. And again, as I said, we didn't
• 41:07
Speaker 2: have a McDonald's or a Taco Bell in Logan. So
• 41:10
Speaker 2: that was a big deal. The first time I ever
• 41:12
Speaker 2: ordered nachos Belgrande was at the town center. Last time
• 41:16
Speaker 2: I ordered nachos Belgrande, it was like roughly the size of,
• 41:19
Speaker 2: you know, uh, I don't know, uh, what's something small,
• 41:22
  Speaker 2: a coffee cup.
• 41:22
  Speaker 8: I don't know.
• 41:23
Speaker 2: So it was like, what, what, what happened? This used
• 41:25
Speaker 2: to be a lot bigger than that. But anyway, um,
• 41:27
Speaker 2: and that's the thing I remember was just being blown away.
• 41:30
Speaker 2: you know, by the whole thing. And as I said,
• 41:33
Speaker 2: we didn't make it over here as often as what
• 41:36
Speaker 2: some people did. But for a lot of people in
• 41:40
Speaker 2: Southern West Virginia, particularly where I was from, I mean,
• 41:43
Speaker 2: you know, the town center was a two to three
• 41:44
Speaker 2: time a week thing, especially Saturdays. And I know people
• 41:47
Speaker 2: that would come on Saturday, spend the day and then
• 41:50
Speaker 2: come back on Sunday. And just to see all of that,
• 41:55
Speaker 2: you know, go away. But again, you know, hindsight's 20-20.
• 41:58
Speaker 2: And If you look back at all of the issues,
• 42:01
Speaker 2: and again, I would urge you to go read some
• 42:03
Speaker 2: of the stuff. He didn't pay me to say this,
• 42:06
Speaker 2: but city council person Sean Taylor has done a great
• 42:09
Speaker 2: job on social media of putting out there his take
• 42:12
Speaker 2: on this. And there's so many layers to this, so
• 42:16
Speaker 2: many layers to what happened for the demise of the
• 42:18
Speaker 2: Charleston Town Center the last couple of years. And if
• 42:21
Speaker 2: you look at the whole group, which I think many
• 42:24
Speaker 2: of us don't look on in a kind fashion. But
• 42:29
Speaker 2: if you look at them and you say, well, this
• 42:31
Speaker 2: is your fault, and they could have done some things differently,
• 42:34
Speaker 2: but it was on a downward spiral before that. And
• 42:38
Speaker 2: if you look at any certain administration, no. Like what
• 42:41
Speaker 2: the texture said earlier, if you think any mayor, any
• 42:43
Speaker 2: city council person is going to be able to wave
• 42:45
Speaker 2: a magic wand and save a private business, that's not
• 42:48
Speaker 2: the business of government. So beware of that when you
• 42:52
Speaker 2: see people saying, well, you know, this wouldn't happen, you know, well,
• 42:56
  Speaker 2: you know, it's, it's a private business.
• 42:59
  Speaker 8: Okay.
• 42:59
Speaker 2: And you gotta be real careful when the government gets
• 43:02
Speaker 2: involved in, in, in dealing with private businesses, but we'll
• 43:05
Speaker 2: see what happens. I told you what I want to
• 43:07
Speaker 2: see happen is a multi-use facility retail, not, I mean, honestly,
• 43:12
Speaker 2: not a part of it. I mean, a good restaurant,
• 43:14
Speaker 2: coffee shops, whatever, but, um, you know, a, a, a
• 43:19
Speaker 2: store of any kind is not going, it's not the future.
• 43:22
Speaker 2: of the Charleston Town Center, if there is a future
• 43:24
Speaker 2: with the Charleston Town Center. Next Florida guy, Dave, is
• 43:28
Speaker 2: going to be a big surprise voter turnout that nobody's
• 43:31
Speaker 2: talking about. It will be seniors because many fought two
• 43:35
Speaker 2: world wars over it, and now how destructive socialism is
• 43:38
Speaker 2: and won't vote Democrat. This will be a shock and
• 43:41
Speaker 2: awe come November the 3rd. Well, I'll disagree with that
• 43:46
Speaker 2: to a certain extent, but I hope I'm wrong as
• 43:48
Speaker 2: far as the turnout. Because I always want to see
• 43:51
Speaker 2: a high turnout. I don't care what the year is.
• 43:54
Speaker 2: I always want to see people getting out there and
• 43:56
Speaker 2: exercising their right to vote. And I really, really hope
• 43:58
Speaker 2: that they do. Is it going to be the shock
• 44:01
Speaker 2: and awe that this texture?
• 44:03
  Speaker 6: Maybe.
• 44:04
Speaker 2: Maybe it will be. We'll see. Come November 3rd. 951,
• 44:07
Speaker 2: trick or beat with 107.3 The Beat back at GoMart
• 44:09
Speaker 2: Ballpark Thursday, October 29th. Two sessions. 1-6-7, the other 7-30-8-30,
• 44:14
Speaker 2: presented by Salango Law. Admission is free, but you must
• 44:17
Speaker 2: have tickets to enter. And there's a reason for that,
• 44:19
Speaker 2: because we've got to have a head count. Tickets will
• 44:21
Speaker 2: be available at our studios, 11-11, Virginia Street, Easton Charleston,
• 44:25
Speaker 2: starting next week. Again, you must have a ticket to
• 44:27
Speaker 2: get in, even though it is free. Every year, people
• 44:31
Speaker 2: show up and they didn't get their tickets. Well, even
• 44:33
Speaker 2: though we don't charge, it, in effect, sells out, because
• 44:37
Speaker 2: we can only have so many people in there, only
• 44:39
Speaker 2: so many Milky Ways to go around. All right, so
• 44:42
Speaker 2: Get your tickets starting next week, DirtyBirdsBaseball.com. You can find
• 44:45
Speaker 2: info there on the social media pages of them or 107.3
• 44:47
Speaker 2: The Beat as well. Speaking of 107.3 The Beat, I
• 44:50
Speaker 2: do want to mention this. As you know, 107.3 The
• 44:53
Speaker 2: Beat is your home of West Virginia State football every Saturday.
• 44:56
Speaker 2: Daniel Woods, play-by-play guy. Hollis Lewis is in on that
• 44:59
Speaker 2: as well. Every Wednesday night, they do a coach's show
• 45:02
Speaker 2: starting at 7, live at the pitch. at the Shawnee
• 45:05
Speaker 2: Sports Complex in Dunbar. So come on out there, hang
• 45:07
Speaker 2: out with Coach Pennington, hang out with Daniel and the team,
• 45:10
Speaker 2: and eat some great food there. Get some of that
• 45:12
Speaker 2: pitch dust put on your potato chips and your wings
• 45:15
Speaker 2: as well. It's good stuff. We do that every Wednesday
• 45:17
Speaker 2: night at the pitch starting at 7 o'clock. We'll take
• 45:19
Speaker 2: a break. Come back after this. Still time for you.

• 48:09
Speaker 2: I actually got a mention in the newspaper today, the
• 48:12
Speaker 2: Charleston Gazette-Mail, the story about the town center quoting the
• 48:16
Speaker 2: mayor on this very show on Monday. And right there
• 48:19
Speaker 2: in black and white, man, it actually said, from the
• 48:22
Speaker 2: Dave Allen show. So, yeah, I have arrived, I guess.
• 48:27

• 48:39
Speaker 2: Tech says, really pathetic how some of you are just
• 48:41
Speaker 2: so blind with hatred for anything Republican. It doesn't have
• 48:45
Speaker 2: to be Trump that you are so willing to just
• 48:48
Speaker 2: completely ignore all the insanity and evil going on in
• 48:51
Speaker 2: other parts of the world that is slowly coming here.
• 48:54
Speaker 2: Look at Spain, look at England, and now look at France.
• 48:57
Speaker 2: Open borders and welcoming in this third-world evil turns you
• 49:00
Speaker 2: into the third-world evil that they fled. There was a
• 49:06
Speaker 2: situation at CAMC Women and Children's last night. Jack Carlson
• 49:09
Speaker 2: writes about it this morning, WCHSnetwork.com. A Kanawha County man
• 49:13
Speaker 2: is in custody after allegedly threatening, was actually charged with
• 49:16
Speaker 2: terroristic threats at CAMC Women and Children's. in jail now.
• 49:20
Speaker 2: 21-year-old Anthony Smith from Sissonville is alleged to have made
• 49:23
Speaker 2: terroristic threats towards some folks there. According to the Kanawha
• 49:26
Speaker 2: County Sheriff's Office, again, the story posted this morning at WCHSnetwork.com. Texas, Dave,
• 49:33
Speaker 2: the government does save private businesses. Remember GM and the
• 49:36
Speaker 2: banks during the 2008 recession? They paid it back, but
• 49:40
Speaker 2: the government had to loan them money because they made
• 49:42
Speaker 2: terrible decisions. It's that free market, baby.
• 49:45
  Speaker 8: It's a good point.
• 49:46
Speaker 2: Good point. I don't know that comparing a single entity
• 49:51
Speaker 2: like the Charleston Town Center with a major corporation, a
• 49:54
Speaker 2: financial organization, or General Motors is a good equivalency. But
• 50:00
Speaker 2: your point is well taken. Text, unbelievable. The taxpayers are
• 50:04
Speaker 2: going to keep Crystal Pike alive after failed execution. Yet
• 50:07
Speaker 2: some are perfectly fine with leaving a viable baby that
• 50:10
Speaker 2: survived an abortion in a room alone on the table
• 50:13
Speaker 2: to die. Disgustingly despicable, says the texter. I want to
• 50:18
Speaker 2: go back to this a little bit, and I know
• 50:20
Speaker 2: I'm kind of beating the dead horse here, but I
• 50:21
Speaker 2: talked about it with Stephen, talked about it on Midday yesterday,
• 50:24
Speaker 2: talked about it on TalkLine. And this is this flipping
• 50:28
Speaker 2: of another county in West Virginia after, you know, so
• 50:32
Speaker 2: many years of Democratic control now flipping Republicans. And that's
• 50:38
Speaker 2: Logan County, which is the land of which I am from.
• 50:42
Speaker 2: I mean, again, I knew it was coming. And I
• 50:46
Speaker 2: first started seeing when I was down there and I
• 50:49
Speaker 2: was working the radio station down there, I started seeing
• 50:53
Speaker 2: it in the mid-2000s, a certain shift. And it really
• 51:00
Speaker 2: had nothing to do with the people. It had to
• 51:03
Speaker 2: do with national politics. And then and people hate when
• 51:07
Speaker 2: I say this, but when you have a region that
• 51:10
Speaker 2: at that time was so reliant on coal, still is,
• 51:13
Speaker 2: but not to what it was, and you have candidates
• 51:17
Speaker 2: on the left that come out and say, if you
• 51:20
Speaker 2: build a coal-fired power plant, we are going to shut
• 51:24
Speaker 2: it down. We have somebody running for president who makes
• 51:26
Speaker 2: comments like, and again, you can say they were taken
• 51:28
Speaker 2: out of context or whatever, but they make comments like,
• 51:31
Speaker 2: we're going to put a whole lot of coal miners
• 51:33
Speaker 2: out of work and then what do you expect is
• 51:35
Speaker 2: going to happen? Do you expect that they are going
• 51:38
Speaker 2: to continue down that road, or are they going to
• 51:40
Speaker 2: look for something else? Well, that's what they've done, and
• 51:42
Speaker 2: now Logan County is a Republican county. All right, got
• 51:47
Speaker 2: to go. Thank you to Stephen Allen Adams and Andrew
• 51:49
Speaker 2: Donaldson for being here. I'll be back later today with
• 51:52
Speaker 2: Metro News Midday with Amanda Barron and me, powered by
• 51:55
Speaker 2: Salango Law. Looking forward to having you on the show today.
• 51:57
Speaker 2: We'll introduce you to this week's wonderful West Virginian, plus
• 52:00
Speaker 2: Dave Wilson stops by, Fred Persinger. George Manahan, State Treasurer
• 52:03
Speaker 2: Larry Pack, and more. I'll be back to do this
• 52:06
Speaker 2: thing once again tomorrow. Enjoy this nice weather.
• 52:08
  Speaker 1: See you later.
• 52:09
Speaker 2: Until then, have fun and love somebody.
• 52:25
Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
