- 0:56[SPEAKER_01]: Today we're talking about something every emptiness mom, longs for peace.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_01]: Not the kind that comes from everything going right, but the kind that comes from knowing God is with you even when life feels uncertain, lonely or harder than you expected.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm joined by Adam Shack, author of this feels like home, a beautiful and honest book about finding peace with God no matter where you are with him.
- 1:18[SPEAKER_01]: Autumn shares her own story and reminds us that peace isn't found in perfect circumstances it's found in God's presence.
- 1:24[SPEAKER_01]: So if you've ever been walking through a harder or confusing season and emptiness, this conversation may feel like a deep breath for your soul.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_01]: Let's dive in.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome, Adam.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_00]: In hell, thanks so much for having me.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'm excited.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_01]: I'm so glad you're here.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_01]: I want to know what in your life inspired you to write this feels like home.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_00]: What you just said there, just wanting to feel like you can take a deep breath.
- 1:50[SPEAKER_00]: That's where I'm at.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: That's where I'm always at.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_00]: But entering the season, midlife, and I'm not an anti-nuster yet, but I'm standing at the doorsteps.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: I have the senior, nice school.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: He leading next year, most of my friends are already in the anti-nest phase.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: I just, I'm always looking for peace, and always looking to take that deep breath.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: Always, and I'm looking for it around every corner.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to exercise routine, and I'm always wanting to go on a walk with a friend, where we can dissect everything about our day, and those things are great and wonderful, but the peace ten fades, and then I need something else to replace it.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: So for me, I started writing.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: So, I should also probably mention I'm not a fellow, didn't I?
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not in this seminary, those people are all.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I love learning from them, I just not want those people, which is what I was hoping the appeal would be of my book that just a regular lady with a lot of feelings in midlife, and I want to see what Jita's has to say about my feelings.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where the book started.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to see of all kinds of midlife themes.
- 3:03[SPEAKER_00]: stress, anxiety, fearing overwhelmed, fearing lonely, even deaths, and so that is why this book is also for all kinds of women, and all walks of faith, because I have some people in my life who feel like, oh, shit, I don't know how I feel about faith, I don't know how I feel about you,
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: Jibrokin for Jesus.
- 3:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I really wrote with those women at the forefronts that I wanted to feel like this is a dissolved landing space for any woman who needs it.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: But they can walk into this and feel at home.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I love that.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_01]: I like you, rave piece.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't want chaos.
- 3:52[SPEAKER_01]: I just don't.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it was because I had five kids.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it was because I was a pastor's wife.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's just like, I just want simple and I want peace.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_01]: But I want it like,
- 4:04[SPEAKER_01]: settled in my bones, like in my soul.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and that changes as we age, and but how can we get to a point where we aren't losing met peace?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: We always feel at home, and for me that place has always been Jesus, so I was just anxious to share that with whoever one until us.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_01]: Many women think that peace comes from when their circumstances change.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_01]: How do you discover peace with God even when things stay difficult or challenging or lonely?
- 4:35[SPEAKER_01]: Or stressful?
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: You name it.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: Fill in the boy.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, I'm not there yet with the nc nest, but I have felt those changes with my kids.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: So I have two kids and I was a stay at my mom and I have work full time talk about an identity shift to the earth through the feeling of loss.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: So I I feel that word to it loss that there is a little bit of loss every time those kids change and every time they change faith is in life.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: So as I look at that and thinking that
- 5:09[SPEAKER_00]: If we are putting our identity and being moms, being wives, being a photographer, being a pigcaster, whatever it might be, all of those things can change, and as we've seen,
- 5:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so how do we step around that?
- 5:29[SPEAKER_00]: How do we keep the peace level?
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: We need something that's stabilizing.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: And Hebrew's 1380s tell us that Jesus is the same.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, true.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: Soon.
- 5:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's where I grew forever, that's how you say that he's that chaotic, there's nothing chaotic about him order so if you can get to a point where
- 5:56[SPEAKER_00]: You could feel peace through him, but people will say, oh, I don't that feel, that sounds great.
- 6:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's one of the things you say.
- 6:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's not what we do, it's who's we are.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: First of all, that's a real thing.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: It is a real thing.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's not pretentious.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_00]: With sometimes it sounds like Christian easy.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_00]: And how do we get there?
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: How do we apply it?
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 6:16[SPEAKER_00]: So for me, it has to start with knowing him.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_00]: We have to know somebody.
- 6:24[SPEAKER_00]: What does that mean?
- 6:26[SPEAKER_00]: So what does that mean?
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_00]: So for me,
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: There's one word that comes to my, and that's my Bible.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's my Bible, and I know that for so many women including me, sometimes that feels overwhelming.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, where do I start?
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: What do I do here?
- 6:41[SPEAKER_00]: This is Mark and Luke, or probably my two favorite books to really get in and see who he is.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: How did they talk to people?
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: Who did he hang around with?
- 6:51[SPEAKER_00]: Why did he handle difficult people?
- 6:53[SPEAKER_00]: When you start to see that,
- 6:56[SPEAKER_00]: And know him, you couldn't trust him.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: And why don't you trust him?
- 7:01[SPEAKER_00]: See, come up in your relationship.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: Why don't you trust somebody?
- 7:04[SPEAKER_00]: Trust something.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: You couldn't shake that responsibility over you.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: You can start just surrender.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: And for me, the surrender in the kind of pushing my bag of trash if you would have at his feet, yes, is what brings me peace.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'd like to call it the Great Exchange where we exchange all of our stuff for what he has, which is
- 7:29[SPEAKER_01]: comfort, guidance, direction, wisdom, peace, encouragement, strength.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: So we have to stop looking at our circumstances because in this season of life, when you are first stepping into this emptiness season, it is so disorienting.
- 7:48[SPEAKER_01]: Cause your identity completely changes.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_01]: You are no longer the busy functioning mom.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_01]: You step back and let your child gain some autonomy and become responsible for themselves.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_01]: When a mom doesn't let her child become responsible for himself, they end up living in the basement at 35.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: I coach moms through this and there are still some, and it is so painful for her, she can't let him go.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: when they have a spot.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's not necessarily the best angle.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: Right, right.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_01]: So because we have peace with God, because we've learned to know Him through His Word, because He is the Word, when you're reading, when we're reading the Word, we can always say, what is this telling me about God?
- 8:43[SPEAKER_01]: Now, what does this tell me about me?
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: What does this tell me about God?
- 8:46[SPEAKER_01]: And then when I know who God is, then I can trust Him.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_01]: And then it's in that letting go.
- 8:52[SPEAKER_01]: This season is all about letting go.
- 8:54[SPEAKER_01]: You know, when our kids were teens, we would we would give them a little bit of responsibility.
- 8:59[SPEAKER_01]: And let them venture out into the world.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_01]: That was like practice for the emptiness season.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_01]: You literally let them go.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_01]: Like they are their own people now.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the scary feeling.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: That is the idea of scared, but ready.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like described as the whole thing, but it is scary.
- 9:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's still scary because I am not long-serious.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: It happens though.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: That's normal.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: No, if you remember this, but I'm in that place of feeling, okay, it's a countdown.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: I have five months left to prepare.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: I need to make sure she knows about this.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: going on.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_01]: Basically, no peace.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_00]: Basically, what we shouldn't be doing?
- 9:42[SPEAKER_00]: Much.
- 9:43[SPEAKER_00]: So don't be worried about that.
- 9:45[SPEAKER_01]: But don't do that.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: Let's instead lean into peace.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_01]: What is peace actually look like while you're anticipating this?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's a loss.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's a transitional grief.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_01]: We're all going to experience it.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_01]: We knew that our child would grow up.
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: But we didn't talk about what that would look like.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_01]: So how can she experience peace in the great unknown?
- 10:07[SPEAKER_01]: What can she do?
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: So with me, oh my gosh, where do I even start?
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: There's so many things that point to a lack of peace in a woman or age.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: I can check so many of those boxes, but what I'm working on right now is basically going through a question.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: Answering a question, now this is going to sound like a forbidden dismissive, but I'm doing it where 10 times a day trying to create a practice of who cares?
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Who cares?
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: Before you're like, what does that have any?
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: So let's say that even with writing my book, I'd love really stupid.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't say the other one.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that much, but I know about feelings, and when I try this, I can look really dumb.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I have to set myself.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_00]: Who cares?
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: Who cares?
- 11:00[SPEAKER_00]: Not what?
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: Or the world.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: So there's your measure.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: Are you doing things?
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: Am I doing things to be seen?
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: To feel fulfilled to have a purpose in this world?
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: Or am I doing things that are more of a faithful obedience?
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: and have great looking to guide for that direction.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: So the whole who cares it sounds, I'm really, you know, I'm saying, I saw a lot of who cares.
- 11:29[SPEAKER_00]: This is that she's leaving me.
- 11:31[SPEAKER_00]: Who cares?
- 11:31[SPEAKER_01]: She's on a way to college, huh?
- 11:34[SPEAKER_01]: I can't forget.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_01]: Shoot, you just have a way.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe it's more, you don't have to have all the answers now.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, I like that.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah?
- 11:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: Because you're right in saying that that does God cares about our heart.
- 11:53[SPEAKER_00]: It cares.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: It cares and I'm not per sadness.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: So it's not to dismiss those feelings.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's a measure of, and I worried about in my empty nost, feeling like I am.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody to the world.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: There you go.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 12:11[SPEAKER_01]: When I've lost my identity, I've lost my identity as a mom.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_01]: Guess what?
- 12:16[SPEAKER_01]: Your role as a mom was one role.
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: It was not your entire identity.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's just one thing we do for the Lord, and we did it well, but God has so much good.
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: apart from your mothering, and will how he's be moms like no one's taken our wrong card away.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's just going to evolve and change in the relationship grows, but you're in their mom forever.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_01]: You just relate to them in a different way.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: Right?
- 12:44[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_01]: Hey mama, if your house feels too quiet and your heart feels too heavy after launching your child, I've created a guide just for you.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_01]: It's called journaling through transitional grief.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: A gentle, faith-filled resource to help you process the deep of motions of letting go.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: Inside, you'll find six reflection questions that will help you name your feelings and invite God into the grief and experience his comfort in the middle of change.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, transitional grief is only a season and God is leading you toward peace, purpose, and joy.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: You can grab your free copy at the link in the show notes.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, so how can emptiness moms find a sense of home with God when their identity as a mom has changed?
- 13:34[SPEAKER_00]: So, if you are really looking into the things that you were doing and your focus was on your kids.
- 13:43[SPEAKER_00]: obviously.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like sometimes, too, I come out and the focus on my kids and then I can even start really focusing on myself and everything that I'm feeling and I can even be overwhelmed by my feelings and trying to fix my feelings.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: So one of the things that you could do is shift that focus
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: outward.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: So, take it from where it's about me and how I'm feeling and I say, and yes, those things are real.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: I will never tell moms and don't forget about that.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_00]: Get over that.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_00]: Those are real feelings.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: But how can you shift your thought process and want?
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: So, one of the things I would recommend my mom and she used to always say it to me when you are feeling sorry for yourself, for your feeling down, and bring your sitting there thinking about yourself, do something for
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: Can you call friends to go on war?
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: He and you just stopped by somebody's house at the coffee and say I was thinking about you or Or putting a note of encouragement in somebody's mailbox something led that to to turn the focus outward I love that.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_01]: I'm currently reading a book called the dose effect and it's all about hormones
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: dopamine and serotonin, but actually serotonin rises when you do something for someone else.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it's good for your brain chemistry.
- 15:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're not supposed to be so self-focused.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, me, I'm so sad.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like us.
- 15:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: And with that, I think we also have to get comfortable being alone, a little bit.
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: And being so afraid of, I remember when I was little,
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: And we go out to eat or something and I would see a woman sitting alone in the movie's place.
- 15:28[SPEAKER_00]: Or see a woman having lunch for her.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: And it would break in my heart.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_00]: Empath, I like to take on the nons.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: But now that I'm older, I say, oh my gosh, how long is she is to be able to just sit there and be okay.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: And that's being alone doesn't mean lonely.
- 15:47[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of that long layers.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: not that it's not a real feeling, but to me, that sounds verbiage of the enemy.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_01]: Hmm, exactly.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: Who is sitting with us in those lonely spaces saying, you know, be the meaty anymore.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: You're not important.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: And it's all lies.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:06[SPEAKER_01]: Because what is the Lord say?
- 16:08[SPEAKER_01]: Never will I leave you or forsaken for a will.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_01]: We're never alone.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_01]: So it's, it goes back to knowing God.
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: What do you know to be true about your life?
- 16:18[SPEAKER_01]: What do you know to be true about God?
- 16:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then applying bad to these moments.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I love this idea of reaching out.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: Do you have any other simple practical ways a woman can move toward peace with God when a heart feels anxious or unsettled?
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: So for me, so you mentioned the vormous, and I'm a man that opposed error.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: And which reason I'm also in my ADD era.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: Though I don't know, those two seem to be going and didn't hand for Baves out and white.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: I can't focus.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: I can't focus for anything.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: So, a few years ago, before my manifest era, I was able to spend time with thought and find my piece and maybe listening to worship music in the car while I was driving the kids around.
- 17:05[SPEAKER_00]: It might have been listening to a podcast.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I say, you don't want to because they're bad, but the older I get in the lower ADD edge I feel, I have got to get.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: into peace in quiet.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: So for me right now to really, and I don't know about you, but sometimes I feel like I'm done talking.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: I want to listen.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: I want to listen to what God has to say to them.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_00]: Though how can I create a space where I can hear him?
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: And for me, that is being quiet.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: Right now
- 17:44[SPEAKER_00]: no phone and just being able to look at the order and ask creation to visit there and let him see.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: me.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: Being alone, a lot of the times in the morning I will get up and go down to the basements, where my family get by me, and that's where I'll do some devotions, and I'll read my Bible.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: It really is like my pill for the day, if you will.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's my killing and pill.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: You know that I have to have.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: I guess I would say actual practices for me right now in the
- 18:22[SPEAKER_00]: to be alone.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_00]: And so we can listen.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the time, Jeff, to be intentional.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_01]: And really, yes, I love that.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_01]: It is so lovely to just open God's word and say, what do you want me to know?
- 18:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then just listen.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 18:40[SPEAKER_01]: Look, you're not studying anything.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_01]: You're not doing all the things that are good things.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_01]: And yet, God, I want to know what you want me to know today.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_01]: Not what some devotional tells me.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: I want to know.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, you know what I mean to know.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Is there any other subject that exists on the face of the earth that you could sit down to a day after day?
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: And it's never.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's like insatiable that couldn't his hard to word.
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's a line and he will use that word to speak to you.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I say that until you've been in his word, you might not really get it or I say, I don't know if I didn't know.
- 19:19[SPEAKER_00]: I really started spending time in his word.
- 19:21[SPEAKER_01]: I love it.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_01]: Autumn, I would love to know what is one little tidbit you have for the mom, who's on the verge of the emptiness or in the emptiness.

- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing you'd be due to make him love me more.
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that's the commercial art that he gets us.

- 20:24[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of the times I should that night say, but do we get him?
- 20:28[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm, we get who he is, and like I said, how he taught how he acted, how he handled things, because I truly believe if you read about him and you really get to know him, you will love him and you will feel that peace that has his all understanding.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: It makes no sense, but yet it's there.
