- 0:05Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Good Hang.
- 0:08Speaker 1: We have Andrew Garfield on today. Andrew is just the best,
- 0:12Speaker 1: a real tenderoni and hilarious and talented and star of
- 0:18Speaker 1: film and Broadway. And we are going to get into
- 0:21Speaker 1: so many things today. We're going to talk about how Munich...
- 0:24Speaker 1: has the best felt. We're going to talk about having
- 0:27Speaker 1: that competitive spirit, especially when it comes to board games.
- 0:29Speaker 2: We're going to talk about being method, but not being
- 0:32Speaker 2: a jerk. And we're going to talk about.
- 0:33Speaker 1: His new movie, The Uprising, which is out now and
- 0:37Speaker 1: looks incredible, like all of the stuff that Andrew does.
- 0:39Speaker 1: So we're very, very excited to get started, but we
- 0:43Speaker 1: always start our episodes by speaking to somebody who knows
- 0:46Speaker 1: our guest, who has worked with our guest, has.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Good things to say about our guests behind their back.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And we're going to talk to A legend, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
- 0:57Speaker 1: You know him from, oh, I don't know, Hamilton and
- 1:01Speaker 1: Moana and the upcoming Warriors musical and five other million
- 1:05Speaker 1: things that he's won 10 EGOTs for.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Lin? Hi. Hi.
- 1:17Speaker 2: This episode is brought to you by Uber.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You know those little choices you make that give you
- 1:22Speaker 1: more comfort throughout the day, like planning your outfit the
- 1:25Speaker 1: night before, sharing your location with a friend when heading
- 1:28Speaker 1: home late, taking the actual lunch break away from your desk?
- 1:32Speaker 2: Uber has one too.
- 1:33Speaker 1: It's called Women Preferences, and it lets women riders request
- 1:37Speaker 1: a woman driver directly in the app, because sometimes having
- 1:41Speaker 1: a little more choice can make a big difference. It's
- 1:43Speaker 1: a simple option that can help women feel more comfortable
- 1:46Speaker 1: during their ride.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Learn more on the Uber app. Lynn?
- 2:01Speaker 4: Hi!
- 2:02Speaker 5: Hi!
- 2:02Speaker 2: I can't wait to get you into the stude.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Can I tell you, I had a nightmare about that once.
- 2:07Speaker 1: You did?
- 2:08Speaker 3: I had a nightmare that like, you invited me on,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but you didn't, I could tell you didn't really want
- 2:13Speaker 3: me to be on. Like someone had you and you
- 2:15Speaker 3: were like, come in, I guess.
- 2:18Speaker 2: That's making me nauseous.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Like you were very unenthusiastic about it. And you're like,
- 2:23Speaker 3: sit down, I guess. And it wasn't your usual set.
- 2:25Speaker 3: It was just like some apartment where I was like,
- 2:27Speaker 3: I was like a pity guest.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Oh, that's giving everybody the chills in here. That is
- 2:34Speaker 2: a proper stress dream.
- 2:36Speaker 4: Woke up in a sweat.
- 2:38Speaker 3: I can handle a lot of things I cannot handle
- 2:40Speaker 3: not being a good hang with you.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I'm so sorry that I was that way in your
- 2:45Speaker 1: dream in real life. And we are awake and I
- 2:49Speaker 1: can't wait to get you in here. I am such
- 2:51Speaker 1: a fan of your work. Love would love to talk
- 2:54Speaker 1: to you and would be. So happy to be talking
- 2:57Speaker 1: to you.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Oh my goodness gracious.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Yes, yes, yes.
- 2:59Speaker 1: And so happy to be talking to you today. It
- 3:02Speaker 1: looks like you're in some kind of studio. There's a
- 3:03Speaker 1: piano behind you.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Yes, we are in day two of our workshop for
- 3:09Speaker 3: our next musical.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Warriors!
- 3:12Speaker 3: Warriors!
- 3:13Speaker 2: Come out to play!
- 3:15Speaker 3: That's the one! So Issa Davis and I are here
- 3:20Speaker 3: in the room. There are actors learning songs in the
- 3:22Speaker 3: next room.
- 3:22Speaker 1: There must be no better feeling than like working with
- 3:26Speaker 1: the piano and like hearing people sing in the other
- 3:28Speaker 1: room and just the workshopping of it all.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, it's the, it's the thing of like other people,
- 3:34Speaker 3: you get the solitude of writing and then you also
- 3:36Speaker 3: get to like bring in a song and then people
- 3:39Speaker 3: who sing much better than you sound beautiful on it.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And it's, it's, you know, I had so much fun
- 3:44Speaker 3: with your episode with Groff, who is also like one
- 3:46Speaker 3: of my closest friends because just the joy off him
- 3:50Speaker 3: is like, we're in the play. We get to be
- 3:52Speaker 3: in the school play. And we're all still chasing that high.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Yes.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Well, I feel that way, you know, about you, Lynn.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Like I feel I know that everybody that works with
- 4:02Speaker 1: you feels that way. Like you're such a collaborator. You
- 4:05Speaker 1: love the process. You love making things better. You know,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you know, letting the best idea win. Like you can
- 4:13Speaker 1: feel that. And also you're a fan.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Like you've never stopped being a fan of the thing
- 4:20Speaker 2: that you're doing.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Absolutely. Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:22Speaker 3: No, it's, it is. I mean, it's why I had
- 4:24Speaker 3: so much fun when I was on SNL. It was, it's,
- 4:27Speaker 3: it's the school play on steroids. It's like a supercharged
- 4:31Speaker 3: version of the thing that got me hooked on this
- 4:35Speaker 3: art form of like, we get to make it like,
- 4:38Speaker 3: and we get to make something bigger than any of
- 4:40Speaker 3: us can make alone, I think is the big thing.
- 4:42Speaker 4: Yes.
- 4:43Speaker 2: So well said. So well said. Um, And you got
- 4:47Speaker 2: to work with sweet Andrew Garfield.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Sweet, sweet Andrew Garfield.
- 4:51Speaker 2: First of all, congratulations on Tick, Tick, Boom. What a
- 4:53Speaker 2: beautiful film.
- 4:55Speaker 3: It makes my life that you even know what that
- 4:57Speaker 3: is and have seen it. Of course.
- 4:59Speaker 2: I loved the performance. Loved your direction.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Incredible cast. Can we talk about it just for a second?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Because I know it was.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Personal material.
- 5:10Speaker 1: It's also about a person's life who, and Andrew is
- 5:13Speaker 1: kind of actor who's played a lot of real people
- 5:15Speaker 1: as I've been looking.
- 5:16Speaker 2: At his career.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And like, could you imagine even a more considerate and
- 5:21Speaker 1: nicer person to like take somebody's real life into their hands?
- 5:25Speaker 1: But can you just tell me, how did you guys
- 5:28Speaker 1: come together to make that?
- 5:29Speaker 2: How did that, how did that happen?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Sure. I, I, you know, most of my familiarity with
- 5:37Speaker 3: Andrew's work was actually theater. Like I was lucky enough
- 5:40Speaker 3: to see him in Death of a Salesman with Philip
- 5:43Speaker 3: Seymour Hoffman. And he was unreal in that. And then
- 5:47Speaker 3: I saw him in Angels in America, both parts, which
- 5:54Speaker 3: is like, it's a day. It's your day. You go
- 5:57Speaker 3: to the matinee to see part one, you eat dinner,
- 5:59Speaker 3: you see part two, they're both three hours long. And
- 6:03Speaker 3: I didn't know whether he had a musical bone in
- 6:05Speaker 3: his body, but It's such an endurance test, that play.
- 6:09Speaker 3: And he was so magnificent in it that I was
- 6:12Speaker 3: just like, this guy can do anything. I just thought,
- 6:15Speaker 3: I don't know if he can sing, but I think
- 6:17Speaker 3: he can do anything.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Andrew and I had exchanged an email or two in
- 6:22Speaker 3: our lives. He was a fan of Hamilton. And so
- 6:25Speaker 3: I said, can we go out to dinner before your performance?
- 6:29Speaker 3: He was doing Angels on Broadway at the time. And
- 6:33Speaker 3: I took him out to sushi and I told him
- 6:37Speaker 3: about the movie we were working on. And I said,
- 6:40Speaker 3: can you sing? And he said, when are you making this?
- 6:45Speaker 3: And I go, not for a year. And he goes,
- 6:47Speaker 3: then I can sing.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 6:50Speaker 3: And I was like, oh my God, he's going to learn.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Well, that's kind of like the theme of what I
- 6:56Speaker 1: want to talk to him about today is that he
- 6:57Speaker 1: works very hard. He's a really hard worker and takes,
- 7:01Speaker 1: I think, a lot of um, pride in that.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. He, he wants the work. He wants the,
- 7:08Speaker 3: the discipline. And like, you have to be a monk
- 7:10Speaker 3: to do eight shows a week. Like you actually have
- 7:12Speaker 3: to like know when you're eating, know exactly what you're
- 7:15Speaker 3: putting in your body so that you are at your
- 7:17Speaker 3: peak at 7 PM, 8 PM that night. He has
- 7:21Speaker 3: played a monk and like live, like lives it. Like
- 7:26Speaker 3: he truly lives it.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And you know how I feel about Broadway? Absolutely too
- 7:30Speaker 2: many shows. I've said this.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Well, to quote you in Wet Hot American Summer, theater
- 7:36Speaker 3: is now and it's you.
- 7:38Speaker 4: That is true.
- 7:40Speaker 3: Which I watch maybe once a month. I watch that
- 7:43Speaker 3: speech to myself.
- 7:44Speaker 2: It was very obtuse. Yeah, it makes perfect sense. It's
- 7:49Speaker 2: now and it's you.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I mean, you basically played me at 14 in that
- 7:54Speaker 3: movie like, guys, this is serious.
- 7:57Speaker 4: And then you learn.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Well, you learn, oh, no one wants to work with
- 8:02Speaker 3: that person. Like, your job is to make the most
- 8:05Speaker 3: fun room possible so that people choose doing the play
- 8:09Speaker 3: over basketball, over debate team. Like, no, no, actually, this
- 8:12Speaker 3: is the most fun place to be. Not guys. We're
- 8:15Speaker 3: going to work steps.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Story of my life. Story of my life, which is
- 8:19Speaker 2: just like, just chill out.
- 8:22Speaker 4: Chill out.
- 8:22Speaker 3: Chill out.
- 8:25Speaker 1: Just pump the brakes on whatever you're saying. Okay, so
- 8:31Speaker 1: do you have a question you think I should ask
- 8:33Speaker 1: Andrew today?
- 8:34Speaker 2: Anything big, small?
- 8:36Speaker 3: Well, yeah, my question comes with a story, which is
- 8:39Speaker 3: that famously Andrew learned to sing, took a year, and
- 8:45Speaker 3: then came out on the other end and was just
- 8:46Speaker 3: an amazing singer for my movie. And there was a
- 8:49Speaker 3: sequence we had to shoot that was a swimming pool scene.
- 8:52Speaker 3: Jonathan Larson like would swim to get his ideas. And
- 8:55Speaker 3: he wrote this great stream of consciousness song and he
- 8:57Speaker 3: gets the idea while he's doing laps. And I, you know,
- 9:02Speaker 3: had three days in the actual pool. Larson swam in,
- 9:06Speaker 3: in the village and, uh, you know, had a stunt
- 9:09Speaker 3: double for all of the like complicated underwater photography, had
- 9:13Speaker 3: a special underwater photographer. And then I found out Andrew
- 9:17Speaker 3: is basically Michael Phelps. Like his dad is a swim instructor.
- 9:22Speaker 2: That's right.
- 9:23Speaker 3: And Andrew swam better than my stunt double. So my
- 9:27Speaker 3: question is like, one, what are the other superpowers you
- 9:30Speaker 3: have that a director hasn't tapped yet? And one, like
- 9:35Speaker 3: what feels like even too much of a challenge? Like
- 9:39Speaker 3: he learned to sing for me. Martin Scorsese like threw
- 9:43Speaker 3: him into the wild. Like he's really taken on some
- 9:48Speaker 3: I think he gets very excited by the challenges. Like
- 9:51Speaker 3: what's one where, what's something that really scares him that
- 9:54Speaker 3: he would still probably do?
- 9:56Speaker 2: That's a great question.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And I think he's gonna love it because i think
- 10:00Speaker 1: he's i think he is very driven exactly by what
- 10:03Speaker 1: you said by the challenge of what to do next
- 10:05Speaker 1: and and uh yeah and i never know what he's
- 10:07Speaker 1: gonna do next it's always really interesting i mean his
- 10:09Speaker 1: new film that's out is about a peasant revolt yeah and.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Then he goes from that to sam altman Like it's crazy.
- 10:16Speaker 4: I know.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Crazy. Well, Lynn, I loved talking to you.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I think we're going to have a very good time
- 10:22Speaker 1: and not a scary dream time.
- 10:24Speaker 2: When we see each other.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And thanks for stepping away.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Absolutely. Have fun with Andrew. He's a lovey, lovey, love.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:32Speaker 2: Take care. Thanks again.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Awesome. Bye.

- 11:42Speaker 2: Andrew Garfield is here. We're talking about smells. Do you
- 11:46Speaker 2: feel like you have a delicate... Do you feel like
- 11:47Speaker 2: you have a sensitive nose? Can you smell things?
- 11:52Speaker 3: I do.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I feel like I'm a super smeller. Do you not?
- 11:59Speaker 2: Do not.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I bet you are sensitive to smells.
- 12:07Speaker 2: If I can't deal with... Smell is my number one...
- 12:12Speaker 2: My number one sense.
- 12:14Speaker 4: Sense.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I'm the best at it. What do you think is
- 12:22Speaker 2: your best of the five senses?
- 12:23Speaker 4: What is your best? What's my best sense? What's my
- 12:25Speaker 4: most accomplished sense?
- 12:27Speaker 2: We've got smell.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Remind me of the answer.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Okay, we've got smell. We've got hearing.
- 12:32Speaker 4: Ah, yep.
- 12:33Speaker 2: We've got sight. We've got touch. And what's the other one?
- 12:38Speaker 3: Taste.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. I always forget taste.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Are you kidding?
- 12:44Speaker 4: I'm not going to be humble about this. Don't be.
- 12:48Speaker 4: And I don't mean to brag at the same time.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I'm kind of trying to be neutral.
- 12:51Speaker 2: I love a brag.
- 12:52Speaker 4: I'd say touch.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Dang. This is the beginning of the worst or the
- 13:09Speaker 1: best date ever.
- 13:12Speaker 2: But touch, so do you, okay, let me ask you
- 13:14Speaker 2: a touch question. Yeah, please do. Because I enjoy, I enjoy,
- 13:18Speaker 2: I like how things feel.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Like, I like the texture. Yes, you're a tactile.
- 13:21Speaker 2: I'm a tactile person as well.
- 13:22Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:23Speaker 1: When you're shopping for clothes, do you do what I do,
- 13:27Speaker 1: which is you just, you go like this.
- 13:30Speaker 4: You just go like this.
- 13:32Speaker 2: For real, if it's not soft, I'm not interested.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:36Speaker 2: You sniff it and.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Then you touch it. Fabric. Yeah. You know what I love? Yes.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Can I tell you anyway?
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:52Speaker 4: Felt.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I fucking love felt.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Fucking hell. What do we got?
- 13:57Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 13:57Speaker 4: Stand by. We're going to start the interview. I know
- 14:00Speaker 4: where the felt is in this room. I'm like a
- 14:01Speaker 4: divining rod for felt.
- 14:03Speaker 1: Hold on.
- 14:03Speaker 2: Okay, this is... We're recording in New York. I have
- 14:06Speaker 2: more felt in L.A.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Okay.
- 14:08Speaker 5: Yeah, L.A.
- 14:08Speaker 4: Is much more felt friendly.
- 14:11Speaker 2: This is a fake cheeseburger. Open that up.
- 14:13Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 14:15Speaker 2: That's a hard felt.
- 14:17Speaker 4: It's a little hard, this felt. Yeah, it's a little hard.
- 14:20Speaker 4: That's what she said. It's not Munich felt. I was
- 14:23Speaker 4: just in Munich. Munich felt. Yeah. I told you I
- 14:27Speaker 4: like felt. Say more. Munich is known for its felt making.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Whoa, cool.
- 14:32Speaker 4: That's all I got.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And it has like specific.
- 14:35Speaker 4: You can tell. Beautifully made felt. So I was shooting
- 14:39Speaker 4: in Munich. This is a great podcast story. I was
- 14:42Speaker 4: shooting in Munich.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Yes.
- 14:44Speaker 4: And I didn't have much time on my hands. I
- 14:48Speaker 4: was shooting like intensely. But the time I did have
- 14:52Speaker 4: was spent in the felt store.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Were you playing somebody who had to felt?
- 14:56Speaker 4: No, I was playing a peasant.
- 14:58Speaker 2: Right. This is this new movie, The Uprising.
- 15:00Speaker 4: Yes, called The Uprising.
- 15:02Speaker 1: We want to talk about it. And I want to
- 15:03Speaker 1: talk about the fact that you are, look at you.
- 15:05Speaker 1: You really do like touches of very important sense.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Look at you touching.
- 15:10Speaker 4: I would never lie to you about something so vital.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Hold on.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Sorry, but I just want to indulge your touch fantasy here,
- 15:15Speaker 1: which is look at this.
- 15:16Speaker 4: What do you got?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Another cheeseburger.
- 15:19Speaker 4: This fell too hard for me. Yeah, sorry.
- 15:21Speaker 2: That wasn't good. Give that a squeeze.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Oh, that's lovely.
- 15:24Speaker 2: That's what she said.
- 15:25Speaker 4: That's really lovely. I'm really glad it doesn't squeak.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I'm glad it doesn't squeak because I'm an adult.
- 15:30Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 15:31Speaker 4: Yeah, you're a mature lady. I'm a mature adult.
- 15:33Speaker 2: I don't need a dog toy.
- 15:34Speaker 4: I don't need to get excited by sounds in the
- 15:36Speaker 4: way that a dog might.
- 15:37Speaker 3: No.
- 15:38Speaker 1: There's actually no worse feeling than when you bring home
- 15:40Speaker 1: a toy for a child or a dog and you
- 15:42Speaker 1: realize that it squeaks.
- 15:43Speaker 2: You're like, oh, fuck.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Oh, fuck. Why didn't I check that? Yeah. What's cool
- 15:47Speaker 4: about this... Yeah?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:51Speaker 4: What's cool about this.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Let me smell it while you talk about it. I've
- 15:59Speaker 2: never smelt it. It's not bad. You know, sometimes these
- 16:02Speaker 2: smell like they come.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. You all know.
- 16:07Speaker 2: You all know.
- 16:08Speaker 4: You all know what we're about to say.
- 16:09Speaker 1: You guys know how your fake cheeseburgers sometimes smell in
- 16:12Speaker 1: your office. You know.
- 16:16Speaker 2: We, Andrew Garfield is here.
- 16:21Speaker 4: That's all the time we have.
- 16:23Speaker 2: But you're talking about the uprising. I want to talk
- 16:24Speaker 2: to you about this because I... I want to talk
- 16:26Speaker 2: about everything. Okay, I've been thinking about my theme for you.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Theme?
- 16:30Speaker 1: Yeah, about what to talk to you about today because
- 16:32Speaker 1: I feel like we could talk forever.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Yes.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And I love talking to you.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Me too. Same. I love this, by the way. What
- 16:38Speaker 4: you're doing here is so beautiful.
- 16:39Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 16:40Speaker 4: And I'm like, it's about time. There's another podcast.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:43Speaker 2: I know there wasn't enough. Weirdly, people hadn't... Weirdly, they
- 16:46Speaker 2: were like, we have room for one more?
- 16:48Speaker 4: I just said, one more. And I was like, No,
- 16:51Speaker 4: but if anyone should in this world have this room,
- 16:54Speaker 4: it is Polar.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Thank you for that. It's really fun.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Yeah, man. It's really fun. Yeah.
- 17:01Speaker 1: I've been paying attention to, as I've been thinking about
- 17:04Speaker 1: and prepping for today, about your work and your life
- 17:07Speaker 1: and you. And I'm fascinated by your love of hard work.
- 17:13Speaker 2: You just love to work hard.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I do.
- 17:15Speaker 2: You love it.
- 17:16Speaker 4: You do too.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Yes, but not as much as I used to.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Not anymore. That's why I have a podcast, baby.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Just realizing.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Sitting down with a.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But your, your work ethic is really something it's, I'm,
- 17:29Speaker 1: it's very admirable. I'm, I know you, you care, like
- 17:32Speaker 1: your love language feels like it's like acts of service,
- 17:35Speaker 1: like You do things for people, right?
- 17:38Speaker 2: I got you.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Very funny.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Yes, you're on. You're dead on.
- 17:41Speaker 1: That is how you show your passion for stuff, your
- 17:44Speaker 1: love for people, and how you show up in your work.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And you're always working so hard in everything you're doing.
- 17:51Speaker 2: You're training. You're starving. You're learning how to sing. This
- 17:56Speaker 2: new movie looks so hard. And dirty and hard. And
- 18:06Speaker 2: that's all. I just want you to just take it.
- 18:09Speaker 4: I want to talk to your team.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Take it easier.
- 18:10Speaker 4: You want me to take it easier? Yeah.
- 18:12Speaker 1: No, but I'm really into your relationship to work because
- 18:15Speaker 1: I think it's like, it's very admirable. And also I
- 18:18Speaker 1: think it's very, I think it's your way into stuff.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Would you agree?
- 18:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, you know, I keep, because one of
- 18:27Speaker 4: my favorite episodes that you've done is with Cole Escola. Oh, yeah.
- 18:31Speaker 4: it's heaven it's a heaven conversation and just the running
- 18:35Speaker 4: bit of I just like.
- 18:37Speaker 5: Playing it's just all it's all play to me like
- 18:40Speaker 5: the play is the thing and like honestly I'm just
- 18:43Speaker 5: like I can never go on Amy's podcast because I
- 18:46Speaker 5: will be the guy actually saying that for real.
- 18:49Speaker 4: I know what you mean it's really impossible you guys
- 18:52Speaker 4: have made it impossible to have a serious conversation.
- 18:54Speaker 1: About creativity I know what you mean but I think
- 18:57Speaker 1: I can speak for myself and I'd like to speak
- 18:59Speaker 1: for Cole okay But I'm very interested in what motivates people.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, of course.
- 19:04Speaker 1: Like how people move through the world. And that's the
- 19:06Speaker 1: coolest thing about these convos.
- 19:08Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Were you always like a hard worker? What did work
- 19:12Speaker 1: look like in your house, in your family?
- 19:14Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's, yeah. Oh, boy. I know we're going to.
- 19:18Speaker 3: No, I know.
- 19:18Speaker 4: Do you want to hold something?
- 19:19Speaker 2: Do you want to touch something? Do you want to
- 19:21Speaker 2: squeeze something?
- 19:21Speaker 4: Is there any felt that's softer?
- 19:23Speaker 2: There's no, no, there's no Munich felt.
- 19:26Speaker 4: There's no Munich felt in here?
- 19:27Speaker 3: No.
- 19:28Speaker 2: I know, it's a disgusting studio. Jenna, get the Munich bell.
- 19:33Speaker 4: Bring out the Munich bell, Jenna. So, yes. You worked hard.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Okay, fine.
- 19:41Speaker 2: I'll just ask you another question.
- 19:43Speaker 4: No, no, no. I really love what you're... I just
- 19:47Speaker 4: ironically tucked my hair behind my ears.
- 19:49Speaker 3: By the way.
- 19:49Speaker 4: your hair is incredible. We're in the same position right now.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Your hair is great.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Propecia. Great. You know what?
- 19:57Speaker 2: People should know that.
- 19:57Speaker 3: People?
- 19:58Speaker 2: I don't... Every man I know is on Propecia.
- 20:01Speaker 4: You just outed every single man in your life that
- 20:04Speaker 4: you know, including your young nephews and sons. I don't know.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Like every single male.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Propecia is incredible. And thank you for saying that. You
- 20:14Speaker 2: have naturally very thick hair. You always have. You have. Congrats. Incredible.
- 20:20Speaker 2: And I bet you grew it like that. And you
- 20:22Speaker 2: bet you don't even comb it in the morning and
- 20:25Speaker 2: it looks incredible.
- 20:25Speaker 4: I lied about the Propecia. It's just all natural. I'm
- 20:27Speaker 4: just trying to be relatable to other guys out there.
- 20:30Speaker 2: But your hair looks great. But anyway, sorry. You talked
- 20:32Speaker 2: fine earlier.
- 20:32Speaker 4: I'm going to say something controversial. Sometimes people are great.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Do you know what I mean? Sometimes people are really great.
- 20:42Speaker 4: And I know that's a hot take.
- 20:43Speaker 2: That is controversial, Andrew. But that's so you.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I mean, there's a real humanity to the stuff you do.
- 20:52Speaker 1: There's also, you're just a delightful person to be around.
- 20:55Speaker 2: You're a real tenderoni.
- 20:56Speaker 4: I am a tenderoni. I will co-sign that.
- 20:59Speaker 2: You're a real tenderoni.
- 21:00Speaker 4: You and me both. Yes.
- 21:02Speaker 2: And people are great. So say more.
- 21:04Speaker 4: Some people, some human beings can be really wonderful and
- 21:08Speaker 4: add beautiful things to the earth and to the world.
- 21:12Speaker 4: And- I guess I'm curious as well about what is
- 21:17Speaker 4: it that makes us feel compelled to do that? My
- 21:23Speaker 4: mother was one of those people in every single moment
- 21:28Speaker 4: of her life. I have this image of her now
- 21:30Speaker 4: that she's passed. And it came very like a flash
- 21:34Speaker 4: in a dream or like an awakening. I don't know
- 21:37Speaker 4: what it was, but I had this image of her.
- 21:40Speaker 4: being reunited with her tribe after she passed. And it
- 21:45Speaker 4: made sense to me why she could be so hard
- 21:49Speaker 4: on herself in Carnet when she was alive. I was like, oh,
- 21:54Speaker 4: you knew you were meant to be in a thousand
- 21:58Speaker 4: different places at once giving goodness to people. And you
- 22:03Speaker 4: knew in some unconscious way that you were being restricted
- 22:06Speaker 4: by this vessel of a body, by the vessel of
- 22:10Speaker 4: restriction of time and space. So when she passed, I could,
- 22:14Speaker 4: I just, I don't know, like I don't even have
- 22:16Speaker 4: had this experience with someone who's passed, but it's like
- 22:18Speaker 4: in the first month or two, I felt more connected
- 22:23Speaker 4: to her than I ever felt connected to her when
- 22:25Speaker 4: she was incarnate, when she was alive. Let's put it
- 22:30Speaker 4: in quotation marks. I do believe that she's here right
- 22:33Speaker 4: now and she's everywhere all at once. I do believe that.
- 22:36Speaker 4: And I have a knowing of that. So there was
- 22:40Speaker 4: something about seeing maybe seeing my mother in a very
- 22:45Speaker 4: specific kind of hard work. that was so naturally occurring
- 22:50Speaker 4: for her. And I was always someone, in the same
- 22:52Speaker 4: way that you just did with me, I was always
- 22:53Speaker 4: someone with her who was like, just take a trip.
- 22:56Speaker 2: Just relax.
- 22:57Speaker 4: You're enough. You're the most beautiful angel on earth. You
- 23:03Speaker 4: can give yourself what you need. give to others. And
- 23:07Speaker 4: it doesn't make you selfish. It doesn't make you any
- 23:11Speaker 4: which way. But after she passed, I had this real
- 23:14Speaker 4: understanding of like, oh no, that was just inherently who
- 23:17Speaker 4: she was. I don't know whether it was nurture or not.
- 23:18Speaker 4: I have no idea, but it was just the activating,
- 23:22Speaker 4: the animating spirit of her, of her essential nature, of
- 23:27Speaker 4: her essential being. And I guess you could call that
- 23:31Speaker 4: hard work or you could, I don't know, there's something
- 23:34Speaker 4: otherworldly about it. As I say, after she passed, I
- 23:36Speaker 4: was like, oh, she's back. She's actually back. She's back
- 23:40Speaker 4: where she's meant to be running around with her like
- 23:43Speaker 4: good angel brigade, like giving people who need a miracle,
- 23:46Speaker 4: a miracle, like times a million. I could just feel it.
- 23:50Speaker 4: And I was just one of the people that she was...
- 23:52Speaker 4: Hanging out with. Beautiful.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I mean, the idea that her spirit and one spirit
- 23:57Speaker 1: can be kind of like released once they leave their body.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Just the idea that somebody is bigger than their body.
- 24:06Speaker 4: Yes.
- 24:07Speaker 1: And that's so interesting that you talk about your mom
- 24:10Speaker 1: when I ask you that question, because there is something
- 24:13Speaker 1: in your work that feels really not only curious, but
- 24:18Speaker 1: very unbridled.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Like you like to kind of go... go places.
- 24:22Speaker 1: As I'm trying to like psychoanalyze, and again, I am
- 24:25Speaker 1: no therapist, but I do feel like I am.
- 24:29Speaker 2: And that's what this podcast is about.
- 24:30Speaker 4: Again, she says again.
- 24:31Speaker 2: And I will give you a prescription at the end
- 24:33Speaker 2: of this.
- 24:35Speaker 1: No, but I think it's also very interesting that you talk,
- 24:38Speaker 1: even though you're British in many ways, you were born
- 24:42Speaker 1: in the US and you talk, like I find you
- 24:44Speaker 1: toggle back and forth between those things culturally very easy.
- 24:49Speaker 1: And I had a question for you, which is, What
- 24:51Speaker 1: do you think is the most American thing about you?
- 24:54Speaker 4: My love of hamburgers. I love hamburgers.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You have very youthful energy as a person. You're a
- 25:02Speaker 2: little brother.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Yes, I am. And your older brother is a doctor.
- 25:05Speaker 4: He's a doctor, a heart and lung doctor in London.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Yeah, the good son. The good, yeah. He's the one
- 25:11Speaker 4: that made good.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:12Speaker 4: He made good, yeah.
- 25:13Speaker 2: Did he always? Was he always?
- 25:14Speaker 4: Yeah, he was head boy at school. He was catching
- 25:16Speaker 4: the swimming team. He was a fucking son of a bitch. Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 4: He was a son of a bitch.
- 25:20Speaker 2: How many years older than you?
- 25:21Speaker 4: Three years older.
- 25:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 4: I was fucked. I was fucked from day one. And
- 25:24Speaker 4: he gave me meningitis. Day two of my life. He
- 25:28Speaker 4: brings home meningitis.
- 25:30Speaker 2: And then he became a doctor to heal you from it.
- 25:32Speaker 4: You really should prescribe at the end of this. And yeah,
- 25:38Speaker 4: I think being raised in a competitive household is definitely
- 25:41Speaker 4: a part... In the nuts and bolts of the therapy,
- 25:44Speaker 4: it would be like, yeah, we don't feel enough, the
- 25:46Speaker 4: Garfield men. There is a kind of.
- 25:49Speaker 2: But competition sometimes gets a bad rap.
- 25:51Speaker 4: I love competition. I love games. God, I love it too.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I fucking.
- 25:56Speaker 2: What kind of game player are you? You know what
- 25:58Speaker 2: I mean? Like, do you get too intense?
- 26:00Speaker 4: Yes.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Yeah, me too.
- 26:01Speaker 4: I think you would have to ask my friends this,
- 26:03Speaker 4: but I would say I do, I have, I can
- 26:06Speaker 4: upset people.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I have as well.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I work on it because obviously, like, everyone wants to
- 26:11Speaker 1: have a good time. But when people say things like,
- 26:15Speaker 1: I know, when people say things like, who really cares?
- 26:17Speaker 2: I'm like, What are we doing?
- 26:20Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 26:20Speaker 2: Like, we're playing a game. Like, we have to try
- 26:23Speaker 2: to win as best we can.
- 26:25Speaker 4: Otherwise, you're ruining the game.
- 26:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:27Speaker 4: Anyone who, like, says, yeah, I'll play, and then it's like.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Yeah, like, this is so stupid.
- 26:30Speaker 4: It's like... Don't fucking play. Don't fucking play. Yeah, don't
- 26:32Speaker 4: show up.
- 26:33Speaker 2: And also, I'm treating you... I'm being rough on you
- 26:37Speaker 2: because I believe in you.
- 26:38Speaker 4: And I love you. Yeah, for sure.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I mean, I expect the best from you.
- 26:42Speaker 4: Yeah, and I want you to grow.
- 26:45Speaker 2: I want you to grow at... At celebrity or whatever
- 26:49Speaker 2: we're playing.
- 26:49Speaker 4: Traitors, werewolves.
- 26:51Speaker 3: Okay.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Do you like playing mafia?
- 26:52Speaker 4: Yeah. Well, I play werewolf is the version I play. Yeah.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I'm not, I'm.
- 26:56Speaker 4: I'm bad at being the werewolf.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Dude, me too. I hate it. And when I get it,
- 27:00Speaker 2: I'm like, oh fuck.
- 27:01Speaker 1: I know.
- 27:02Speaker 4: I hate it.
- 27:02Speaker 2: I hate it.
- 27:03Speaker 4: I hate.
- 27:03Speaker 1: I hate the lying, I hate the- Deception, I know.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I know, but I love accusing.
- 27:09Speaker 4: Yes, of course. With John Proctoring. And also defending oneself.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Of course.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Being like, how dare you think that I'm.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Like, it was my name! You could not take my name!
- 27:20Speaker 4: And everyone's just like, drinking their beers, and just like,
- 27:24Speaker 4: wanting to go to the bathroom. Like, thou shalt not!
- 27:28Speaker 2: Okay. So let's get in. I do want to ask
- 27:32Speaker 2: you a couple of questions about your work. Okay. I
- 27:34Speaker 2: have to.
- 27:34Speaker 4: Okay.
- 27:36Speaker 1: Your first film, you're with Meryl Streep and Cruz and
- 27:40Speaker 1: Robert Redford.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:41Speaker 4: How old are you then? I'm 23, I want to say.
- 27:44Speaker 1: So you're coming onto that set. Like we all, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 1: you have the, everyone has the jitters of like any
- 27:51Speaker 1: first day on any job.
- 27:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:52Speaker 2: Like, I'm just going to be cool. Just don't talk
- 27:57Speaker 2: too much.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Like, that's what I would say to myself. Just listen
- 28:00Speaker 1: more than you talk. They'll get to know you. Whatever
- 28:03Speaker 1: you're saying to yourself. As you're driving to set or whatever,
- 28:06Speaker 1: what are you saying to yourself when you're approaching that set?
- 28:09Speaker 2: That's a really intimidating set. That's so intimidating. Oh, my God.
- 28:13Speaker 2: What was it like to work with Robert Redford?
- 28:15Speaker 4: I don't know what I was telling myself. So, first
- 28:19Speaker 4: of all, Bob Redford, God rest his soul, beautiful soul
- 28:24Speaker 4: of service that man had a soul for service like
- 28:27Speaker 4: what he did with Sundance and like and what that
- 28:30Speaker 4: sprung from came out it came out of him I
- 28:33Speaker 4: think helping out his new neighbor in Utah who was
- 28:36Speaker 4: about to be foreclosed on he said I'll buy your
- 28:38Speaker 4: farm so you can keep it I'm gonna have to
- 28:39Speaker 4: make some some money out of it and we'll set
- 28:42Speaker 4: up a like a lab for young filmmakers so it
- 28:45Speaker 4: came out of him helping out his neighbor it's just
- 28:47Speaker 4: like he was he was a beautiful beautiful man And
- 28:51Speaker 4: very late all the time to everything. So I say
- 28:55Speaker 4: it with love. So I'm like, yeah, terrified and nervous
- 28:59Speaker 4: and pinching myself. And then Bob is four hours late.
- 29:03Speaker 4: And it's just like, by that time, I'm just pissed.
- 29:07Speaker 4: I'm just angry. Okay, let's talk about this.
- 29:10Speaker 2: No, it wasn't really.
- 29:12Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah. But a lot of the nerves had kind
- 29:14Speaker 4: of dissipated because he was so loose and casual. And
- 29:19Speaker 4: he was so cool. And he still dressed like he
- 29:23Speaker 4: was in his 20s with the double denim. And he
- 29:26Speaker 4: wasn't aware that he was late. He was just like
- 29:28Speaker 4: on his own Redford time. And he was famously late.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I'm not like telling tales out of school. He was
- 29:34Speaker 4: like a famously late.
- 29:35Speaker 2: Well, God is fair.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I mean, you know, like he's so handsome, like there's
- 29:38Speaker 1: going to be something wrong with him. I mean, what
- 29:41Speaker 1: if he was like on time?
- 29:42Speaker 2: I'm like, okay, great. So he's late. Like you'd be
- 29:45Speaker 2: a little annoyed with the guy.
- 29:47Speaker 4: So he's late.
- 29:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:48Speaker 2: He's like, I was too handsome.
- 29:50Speaker 4: I couldn't get in my car. I couldn't stop looking.
- 29:53Speaker 4: I felt guilty.
- 29:54Speaker 2: So you were feeling less nervous.
- 29:56Speaker 4: It helped. Well, he was so relaxed. Yeah, he was
- 29:58Speaker 4: so relaxed. He was so relaxed, and he would shoot
- 30:02Speaker 4: his own coverage first. He would shoot himself, and then
- 30:06Speaker 4: he would look at me after his first take, and
- 30:08Speaker 4: he'd be like, what do you think? Because he was
- 30:10Speaker 4: directing as well, so all my scenes were with him,
- 30:12Speaker 4: and he was like, what do you think? And I
- 30:15Speaker 4: was like, I get it. Great.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Really good.
- 30:17Speaker 4: He's really good, Robert Redford. And he's like, okay.
- 30:20Speaker 2: Oh, that's really generous.
- 30:21Speaker 4: I'll do it again. I'll do it again. But yeah,
- 30:23Speaker 4: tell me if you see anything that you think. And
- 30:25Speaker 4: I'm like, oh my God.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Oh, that's a really interesting move, right?
- 30:28Speaker 4: It was heaven.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Because he's trying to like.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Yeah, just make me feel like it was my set
- 30:32Speaker 4: and make me feel like I was an equal and
- 30:33Speaker 4: like it was my first movie.
- 30:35Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very nice.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Oh, he was so nice. He was so beautiful. And
- 30:39Speaker 4: it was like a theater play and I'd done only
- 30:41Speaker 4: theater at that point. It was a lot of dialogue
- 30:43Speaker 4: and it was like a.
- 30:44Speaker 2: Well, you are a theater person. You're a theater boy.
- 30:47Speaker 4: I love theater.
- 30:48Speaker 2: That is your first love.
- 30:50Speaker 4: That is my first love. That was like my first
- 30:54Speaker 4: exit of the Truman Show. You know what I mean?
- 30:56Speaker 4: Like opening that door in the sky and then it
- 30:58Speaker 4: was like there's a whole world out there that I
- 31:02Speaker 4: had no idea existed.
- 31:03Speaker 2: When you were working on that film, were you still
- 31:05Speaker 2: working at Starbucks?
- 31:07Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 31:07Speaker 2: You had quit Starbucks.
- 31:08Speaker 4: I had quit Starbucks.
- 31:11Speaker 2: No, because there is always this weird thing sometimes when
- 31:13Speaker 2: you're acting.
- 31:14Speaker 4: No, I wasn't ready to fully let go of it.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Of course.
- 31:15Speaker 4: I wasn't like, you know, I'm not going to say
- 31:17Speaker 4: that that era is over.
- 31:18Speaker 3: Right?
- 31:19Speaker 4: I had a little bit of a shock straight out
- 31:21Speaker 4: of drama school. I did two plays in a row,
- 31:24Speaker 4: and then I was like, I'm set.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:26Speaker 4: And I did like a Doritos commercial in Spain.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Yes.
- 31:28Speaker 4: And I'm like, that's that. I guess so. Wrap it up, fellas.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Wrap it up. That's my kind of like the rest
- 31:38Speaker 4: of my life is going to be the occasional Doritos
- 31:40Speaker 4: crisp commercial and great theater work. I'm good. And then
- 31:45Speaker 4: I didn't work for a year. And then I started
- 31:47Speaker 4: having to wait tables again and be a bartender. And
- 31:51Speaker 4: I broke up with my girlfriend. So it was like
- 31:53Speaker 4: a really great year of.
- 31:56Speaker 4: You know, you're never safe. Yeah. Like this destabilized kind
- 32:01Speaker 4: of place. I still have it. I'm sure that you
- 32:04Speaker 4: do too, even at the top of this swanky building
- 32:07Speaker 4: or not. You're like, no, I'm pretty much set.
- 32:09Speaker 2: No, you know, it's funny. It's funny you say that.
- 32:11Speaker 2: I know what you mean.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Like, I still just feel like you have to have
- 32:14Speaker 1: a plan always just if everything goes away.
- 32:18Speaker 4: Yeah. What's yours?
- 32:20Speaker 1: Well, I mean, it's funny. I, I still have dreams
- 32:25Speaker 1: sometimes about going back being a waitress because I liked
- 32:30Speaker 1: waiting tables a lot. Because working in the service industry
- 32:35Speaker 1: in general, I liked a lot because there was just
- 32:37Speaker 1: certain things that felt like you just completed your night.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Like your night had a system and you completed it.
- 32:42Speaker 1: You interacted with people enough that you performed a little bit.
- 32:46Speaker 1: You were with people who also worked very hard. But
- 32:49Speaker 1: the idea of like doing a good job still means
- 32:52Speaker 1: a lot to me. I know it means a lot
- 32:54Speaker 1: to you. I get a lot of self-esteem from work.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:06Speaker 2: Do you consider yourself a method actor?
- 33:08Speaker 4: So the method....
- 33:14Speaker 2: And if so, who am I speaking to?
- 33:18Speaker 1: But it's like, because it is, you do go pretty
- 33:23Speaker 1: deep when you're playing coach.
- 33:25Speaker 2: You do.
- 33:25Speaker 4: You got that trickster look in your eye. You're looking
- 33:28Speaker 4: for the clickbait headline. You're like, is he going to
- 33:31Speaker 4: give me the juice?
- 33:32Speaker 2: Babe, you lost all this weight.
- 33:35Speaker 1: You studied for a year being a monk.
- 33:40Speaker 2: You go for it. You vote for it.
- 33:42Speaker 4: Are you method?
- 33:43Speaker 3: I do.
- 33:44Speaker 4: Are you method? Answer the question. Are you method? It's
- 33:47Speaker 4: a yes or no question.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I mean, are.
- 33:52Speaker 2: You though?
- 33:54Speaker 4: Don't try and get.
- 33:56Speaker 5: Cute with it.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Okay, okay, okay.
- 33:58Speaker 3: Are you? But are you?
- 33:59Speaker 4: No, but I want to know. In a way, yes,
- 34:03Speaker 4: but I think, yeah, better. I think the term has
- 34:08Speaker 4: been massively mischaracterized, misunderstood and co-opted by people that don't know.
- 34:12Speaker 4: A method is basically having a method. And like the
- 34:17Speaker 4: Stanislavski method, the Strasberg method is about trying to live
- 34:21Speaker 4: truthfully under imagined circumstances and having it feel personal, having
- 34:27Speaker 4: it feel connected to something that's interior, that is not just...
- 34:34Speaker 4: a kind of more performative exterior abstraction. So I feel like, yes,
- 34:42Speaker 4: but I don't... I think there's a way of doing
- 34:46Speaker 4: it that's generous. I think there's a way of accessing
- 34:48Speaker 4: that work and that style of working that doesn't fuck
- 34:51Speaker 4: with the rest of the cast, that doesn't fuck with
- 34:53Speaker 4: the rest of the crew, that you don't have to
- 34:56Speaker 4: lose a bunch of weight. That's playful.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Well, yeah. That's playful. Totally. And generous. And my personal
- 35:05Speaker 4: taste and my personal... Sidney Lumet... The great, one of
- 35:10Speaker 4: my favorite filmmakers of all time who seemed to vanish
- 35:13Speaker 4: as a director in his movies in the sense that
- 35:15Speaker 4: like he let his movies be the movies rather than
- 35:19Speaker 4: letting people know that he directed them. Yes. You know
- 35:21Speaker 4: what I mean? Like every movie is such a different flavor,
- 35:23Speaker 4: such a different feel.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Alan Parker is like that too for me.
- 35:26Speaker 4: Alan Parker. I was thinking about Alan Parker and so very...
- 35:29Speaker 4: One of my favorite films of all time, Bugsy Malone,
- 35:31Speaker 4: Alan Parker. And then he does Angel Heart. Yeah. Holy fuck.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:35Speaker 4: And so... He says in his great little book, Making Movies,
- 35:40Speaker 4: I don't know if you've read, he tells a story
- 35:43Speaker 4: about Paul Newman, I think. Yeah, he tells a story
- 35:45Speaker 4: about Paul Newman in, what was the movie they made together?
- 35:48Speaker 4: It'll come back. But he's like, Paul Newman came with,
- 35:52Speaker 4: he did this scene and Lumet was like, okay, I
- 35:57Speaker 4: think we're going to reshoot this tomorrow because I think
- 35:59Speaker 4: you need to find out what this scene's about inside yourself.
- 36:04Speaker 4: And there was something very personal that he was referring to.
- 36:07Speaker 4: He was like, I think you know what this moment
- 36:09Speaker 4: is and I think you're resisting going there. And Paul
- 36:13Speaker 4: Newman came back and he did the scene and it
- 36:15Speaker 4: was one of the great scenes of any Céline Lumet movie.
- 36:18Speaker 4: And he describes it as personal revelation. Céline Lumet is like,
- 36:21Speaker 4: the actor's job is personal revelation while the cameras are rolling.
- 36:26Speaker 4: The actors that I respond to in the storytelling that
- 36:28Speaker 4: I respond to feels... like personal revelation. Yeah. And through
- 36:33Speaker 4: the lens of a character, I think about like, and
- 36:35Speaker 4: I've talked about this openly, about Tick, Tick, Boom, which
- 36:38Speaker 4: is a film that I'm very proud of and I
- 36:40Speaker 4: really love. Beautiful performance. Thanks. But I can talk about
- 36:45Speaker 4: it because it feels very personal and also not personal
- 36:49Speaker 4: at all in a way. It does feel like that
- 36:51Speaker 4: kind of liminal place of letting another spirit move through
- 36:56Speaker 4: intermingling with my own spirit, but also my mother's spirit
- 37:00Speaker 4: is so much in that film. But it was very,
- 37:04Speaker 4: very personal because I just lost my mom and we
- 37:06Speaker 4: were making this movie and it's about the shortness of life.
- 37:09Speaker 4: It's about the shortness, the sacredness of life. It's about
- 37:13Speaker 4: being of service. It's about living out your own calling,
- 37:16Speaker 4: your own destiny. in a way, we're talking about waiting
- 37:20Speaker 4: tables and that year off. How do you hang on
- 37:25Speaker 4: by hook or by crook to the note that you
- 37:29Speaker 4: hear in your head that you have to follow? How
- 37:31Speaker 4: do you play your note? How do you not fall
- 37:34Speaker 4: asleep to your note, even though you're a salmon swimming
- 37:37Speaker 4: upstream of a world telling you to drop it and
- 37:41Speaker 4: take the nine to five or whatever it is?
- 37:44Speaker 2: You mentioned directors. You've worked with really interesting directors. You
- 37:49Speaker 2: always do.
- 37:49Speaker 1: I have a question that I want to ask. Fincher
- 37:53Speaker 1: is one of my favorite directors. I love his films.
- 37:56Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Rashida was in Social Network.
- 37:59Speaker 4: I know.
- 38:00Speaker 1: And I was like, what was it like working with
- 38:02Speaker 1: David Fincher? And he's so incredible to work with. But
- 38:07Speaker 1: I really want to know genuinely, and I'm not like
- 38:09Speaker 1: digging for some, I want to know what does the many,
- 38:12Speaker 1: many takes do? How does it help you as an actor?
- 38:17Speaker 1: How is it not frustrating?
- 38:20Speaker 4: It can be.
- 38:21Speaker 2: Yeah. I love it. You love it.
- 38:25Speaker 4: I fucking love it. Because I love acting and I
- 38:28Speaker 4: love hard work and I love sports and I love
- 38:33Speaker 4: not going home with anything left to give. And yeah,
- 38:36Speaker 4: there's nothing worse, as you know, than going home going,
- 38:39Speaker 4: I could have done that better. Yeah. It sucks to
- 38:44Speaker 4: feel like you're in bed and you're just like ruminating
- 38:46Speaker 4: of like.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 4: My father put me through drama school. he worked so
- 38:52Speaker 4: hard and now I've just done like a half job
- 38:56Speaker 4: at like this thing that I'm so lucky to do.
- 39:00Speaker 4: And so, yeah, I love it. And also I find
- 39:04Speaker 4: it pleasure. I just find the work really deeply pleasurable.
- 39:07Speaker 1: I love positive reinforcement i do i i genuinely do
- 39:11Speaker 1: it works on me like i don't i don't the
- 39:14Speaker 1: challenger in me i what i'm i'm relating to is
- 39:18Speaker 1: the competitiveness of like tapping into like fuck yeah i'll
- 39:21Speaker 1: do this fucking 30 times i don't give a shit
- 39:23Speaker 1: i can tap into that but i need sometimes like
- 39:26Speaker 1: i don't like and I'm sure it david isn't like
- 39:29Speaker 1: this but but i i i don't do well when
- 39:32Speaker 1: i like like when someone's nagging me like i just.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Kind of quit to use the phrase from the pickup
- 39:39Speaker 4: artist are you talking about mystery sorry mystery sorry just
- 39:42Speaker 4: a quick sidebar shout out to mystery we miss you guys.
- 39:47Speaker 1: Mystery it didn't work between us but that doesn't mean that.
- 39:50Speaker 2: You can't find love Obsessed with the pickup artist.
- 39:53Speaker 4: She didn't love the negging, though.
- 39:56Speaker 2: It does not work on me. When someone comes up,
- 39:58Speaker 2: I'm like, hey, you're ugly, whatever. I'm like, okay. Why
- 40:03Speaker 2: are you so ugly at this bar? Whatever that... It does.
- 40:08Speaker 2: I'm not even good at pretending to do it. I just,
- 40:11Speaker 2: I'm like, huh? It does not work on me. It
- 40:13Speaker 2: does not work on me.
- 40:15Speaker 1: But like an exercise class, right? If someone's like, you're
- 40:18Speaker 1: going to work super hard in here.
- 40:20Speaker 2: And like, you know, and I'm just like, no, I'm not.
- 40:23Speaker 4: Not anymore, I'm not. Not anymore. You could have had me.
- 40:25Speaker 4: You could have had all this.
- 40:26Speaker 2: But when someone's like, you got here no matter what.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It's 7 a.m. I'm like, fuck yeah. I'm just telling
- 40:32Speaker 1: for me, for me. So in any of those repetitive takes,
- 40:38Speaker 1: whether it's with David or another director, do you like,
- 40:42Speaker 1: do you trust when you get positive feedback?
- 40:44Speaker 4: With David, I do.
- 40:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:46Speaker 4: I did.
- 40:46Speaker 2: And he would give it?
- 40:48Speaker 4: Yep. Okay, good. But what's so cool about David is
- 40:52Speaker 4: that he's that dad. He's that dad that knows that
- 40:57Speaker 4: you need that. Uh-huh. And he'll give it to you
- 41:00Speaker 4: in abundance when you've like... when you've really shown how
- 41:04Speaker 4: much you care. It's that kind of coach.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Right, I can see that.
- 41:08Speaker 4: I love a sports coach like that. Me too. Like
- 41:11Speaker 4: Paul Greengrass on the film The Uprising is like that.
- 41:14Speaker 4: He's an incredible team captain. He's just like... We were
- 41:18Speaker 4: like a football team, English football team, and he was
- 41:23Speaker 4: our man. And he was so full of beautiful, positive reinforcement.
- 41:29Speaker 4: David would be... Fincher would be less quick with it,
- 41:33Speaker 4: for sure. But when you got it, it was like...
- 41:39Speaker 4: You would be stoic about it. You would receive it
- 41:41Speaker 4: and you would want to cry. But you would be like, thanks, yeah,
- 41:43Speaker 4: it's cool. It was like that level of like it
- 41:45Speaker 4: meant so much. And the big scene with like the
- 41:48Speaker 4: smashing of the laptop thing in that movie.
- 41:50Speaker 1: Yes, in the social network for anyone who doesn't know
- 41:51Speaker 1: what we're talking about.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Yeah, social network. And we did a lot of takes
- 41:55Speaker 4: of it. And there was like a few rounds of
- 41:59Speaker 4: takes where I was like, he's going to call it.
- 42:01Speaker 4: He's going to call it soon. He's going to call it. Okay,
- 42:04Speaker 4: one more time, Andrew. And I'm like, okay.
- 42:06Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 42:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:08Speaker 4: And then on the third round of 10 or 15 takes,
- 42:12Speaker 4: I didn't hear anything. I was just like on the
- 42:14Speaker 4: floor with like, I was exhausted and like, just like
- 42:18Speaker 4: snotty and just like crying. And I'm just like waiting
- 42:22Speaker 4: for like, and at that point you're broken in a
- 42:24Speaker 4: way that's like so beautiful. It's so beautiful. It's the
- 42:29Speaker 4: best fucking feeling in the world. It's the best fucking
- 42:33Speaker 4: feeling in the world. Okay, you say so. And I
- 42:40Speaker 4: just feel like a shadow approaching, like covering, like the
- 42:44Speaker 4: light that was on me just gets like kind of
- 42:46Speaker 4: covered by a figure. And I look at his shoes
- 42:48Speaker 4: and I look up and he looks down at me.
- 42:50Speaker 4: He just puts his hand down and he takes my
- 42:53Speaker 4: hand and he shakes my hand and he lifts me up.
- 42:55Speaker 4: He's like, okay, moving on. And I'm like. So withholding.
- 43:01Speaker 4: So hot.
- 43:06Speaker 2: I don't know. I'm sorry, but you haven't sold me.
- 43:10Speaker 2: You haven't sold me.
- 43:10Speaker 4: All right, let me tell you a different story.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Because I would have liked him at take 10 to say, you're.
- 43:14Speaker 4: Doing a great job. Hey, babe.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Hey, babe, you're doing great.
- 43:18Speaker 4: Hey, babe, you're doing so great.
- 43:19Speaker 2: I would have liked, this is what I would have liked.
- 43:21Speaker 2: You're doing great, but you know me. I have to
- 43:23Speaker 2: do 25 more. That's what I would have liked.
- 43:25Speaker 4: I feel you. Let me say one more thing about David,
- 43:27Speaker 4: because I feel like I need to protect David as
- 43:30Speaker 4: a father on set now. You can feel that he's
- 43:34Speaker 4: proud of you.
- 43:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:35Speaker 4: Because of what you're giving.
- 43:36Speaker 2: He's such a talented director.
- 43:37Speaker 4: But you can feel it. He's not withholding. It's not
- 43:41Speaker 4: like you're doing a bad job. And it's not like
- 43:44Speaker 4: I'm not going to give you the banana. It's like
- 43:47Speaker 4: you can feel when he's like, we're going to keep going.
- 43:52Speaker 4: We'll do another one. Think about this. Think about that.
- 43:54Speaker 4: He's a tender, tender guy. He really, really is.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Getting back to the very beginning of what we're talking
- 43:59Speaker 1: about is this idea that caring about something is, like,
- 44:04Speaker 1: this is, like, very important. And I'll self-reveal because you're
- 44:10Speaker 1: really doing it.
- 44:11Speaker 2: You're really acting like my therapist today, which I don't appreciate.
- 44:14Speaker 4: I'm sorry.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Which I don't appreciate.
- 44:16Speaker 4: I'm honestly sorry.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Okay. You're my David Fincher, and you're breaking me down.
- 44:22Speaker 1: No, but when I feel, like, if I've checked out
- 44:29Speaker 1: or I, like, feel like I– I'm acting like I
- 44:32Speaker 1: don't care about something.
- 44:33Speaker 2: It really means that I've divested.
- 44:35Speaker 1: And it's a bummer because it means that I've lost
- 44:39Speaker 1: some kind of relationship.
- 44:40Speaker 2: Sometimes you have to do it to protect yourself. Sometimes
- 44:42Speaker 2: you do it because you don't have anything left to give.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Sometimes you do it because you don't feel like the
- 44:45Speaker 1: person that you're with earned or deserves.
- 44:48Speaker 4: Or can hold it. Yes, totally, totally. All that.
- 44:51Speaker 2: But you feel like you've lost something. It's heartbreaking.
- 44:54Speaker 4: It is. It's heartbreaking.
- 44:55Speaker 1: And you are very, very, as a person, as an actor,
- 44:59Speaker 1: you really invest.
- 45:01Speaker 2: And it's, like, it must be.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Exhausting. It must be exhausting. It's tough.
- 45:06Speaker 2: That's why I think you need to take a break
- 45:07Speaker 2: from some of these movies.
- 45:08Speaker 4: They're too hard. I'm going to take a break. No,
- 45:09Speaker 4: I am going to take a break.
- 45:10Speaker 2: They're too hard.
- 45:11Speaker 4: It's too hard.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Too much money.
- 45:12Speaker 4: It's too hard being an actor. Being an actor is so.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Did you see Cole? Cole knows.
- 45:16Speaker 1: It's very hard.
- 45:17Speaker 4: Pretending to be things. Pretending to be in a peasant's revolt.
- 45:23Speaker 4: It's hard.
- 45:24Speaker 2: It's hard.
- 45:24Speaker 4: Pretending to be a German magician.
- 45:27Speaker 2: I go home at night and I'm like, owie.
- 45:29Speaker 4: I had to pretend it was cold. It was actually hot.
- 45:33Speaker 2: So, and then.
- 45:34Speaker 4: And then... And then....
- 45:39Speaker 2: Wait, wait, I do want to.
- 45:40Speaker 4: What?
- 45:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 45:43Speaker 4: Seriously, whatever. Whatever you want to ask.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Well, you know what I... I love your... Hold on.
- 45:50Speaker 2: This is an SNL skit.
- 45:55Speaker 4: This is an SNL character.
- 45:57Speaker 2: I'm trying to be real.
- 45:58Speaker 4: Was it you and Fred Armisen or was it Kirsten
- 46:01Speaker 4: Wiig that would start a sentence and then never finish
- 46:04Speaker 4: the sentence?
- 46:04Speaker 3: Yes, Fred.
- 46:05Speaker 4: What was that sketch?
- 46:05Speaker 2: They played Garth and Kat.
- 46:07Speaker 4: That's so good. I love that sketch.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Sorry, Fred played a character... Called Nicholas Fane.
- 46:13Speaker 4: Have you ever, let me ask you this. Has it
- 46:15Speaker 4: ever been a, okay, say you're in summertime. It's summer.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Oregon.
- 46:21Speaker 4: But there's a dog.
- 46:22Speaker 3: Do you have a dog?
- 46:24Speaker 4: Wait. Dogs or cats? I do it badly.
- 46:28Speaker 1: And I've already told you that, or I said on
- 46:30Speaker 1: that podcast, when he would do it, the cue cards
- 46:33Speaker 1: would be blank.
- 46:34Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 46:35Speaker 2: You hosted SNL, right?
- 46:36Speaker 4: I did it once. Yeah, I did it.
- 46:37Speaker 2: And did you have a good time doing it?
- 46:38Speaker 4: I loved it. I absolutely loved it.
- 46:41Speaker 3: I bet.
- 46:41Speaker 4: And of course, I was so scared. But again, like service,
- 46:44Speaker 4: I think the best episodes are when the host supports
- 46:48Speaker 4: the cast. Well, that's not.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Always like an intuitive thing, which I understand.
- 46:52Speaker 1: But like nobody really pulls anybody aside to say like,
- 46:55Speaker 1: I know this might feel weird, but you'll have the
- 46:58Speaker 1: best time if you... Say yes to the stuff that
- 47:02Speaker 1: the cast likes. If you just become an ensemble member,
- 47:06Speaker 1: you'll have the best time. But it's not always set
- 47:09Speaker 1: up like that. But did you host it for Spider-Man?
- 47:12Speaker 2: Was it during Spider-Man?
- 47:13Speaker 4: I think it was the second Spider-Man, yeah.
- 47:14Speaker 2: I had Tom Holland in here.
- 47:16Speaker 3: Sweet.
- 47:17Speaker 2: Oh my God.
- 47:17Speaker 4: Sweetie Pie.
- 47:18Speaker 2: What a Sweetie Pie. Such a doll.
- 47:21Speaker 5: A doll.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Such a talented actor.
- 47:23Speaker 4: So talented.
- 47:24Speaker 1: And I just have to say, I love how all
- 47:26Speaker 1: of you guys like show up for each other.
- 47:29Speaker 2: You talk about each other. You talk about your experience.
- 47:31Speaker 4: It's a brotherhood now, which is really, really great. Like
- 47:34Speaker 4: I think like doing, doing the one where we're all
- 47:36Speaker 4: together really cemented some kind of weird brotherhood that was
- 47:42Speaker 4: just beautiful.
- 47:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 47:43Speaker 4: And I had known Toby a little bit before, but
- 47:46Speaker 4: He was always my north star with that character. And
- 47:52Speaker 4: I loved what Tom's done, and I think that was
- 47:56Speaker 4: very healing for all of us to do that together,
- 47:58Speaker 4: to feel less alone in that very, very weird singular experience,
- 48:02Speaker 4: to be a part of this character's legacy that is maybe,
- 48:06Speaker 4: I don't know, arguably one of, if not the most
- 48:09Speaker 4: popular fictional character in the history of modern fiction.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Really, really true.
- 48:14Speaker 4: I don't know another character that is that big. beloved
- 48:17Speaker 4: around the world and.
- 48:18Speaker 1: Now you know mother of boys I didn't really how
- 48:21Speaker 1: old are your boys they're now 16 and almost 18 and.
- 48:24Speaker 4: The propitia is helping yeah it's helping a lot yeah
- 48:26Speaker 4: I insisted they get on it really like a lot
- 48:29Speaker 4: of hair.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Now mommy loves a good head of.
- 48:31Speaker 4: Hair mommy mommy.
- 48:33Speaker 2: You know mother won't be mother will be disappointed.
- 48:37Speaker 1: That's what I say I wake them up and I
- 48:39Speaker 1: say has your hair grown mother's disappointed have you seen
- 48:45Speaker 1: Andrew's hair I say, don't let mother down. That's what
- 48:50Speaker 1: I say every day when I close the door. But they,
- 48:57Speaker 1: the way in which when that character was introduced into
- 49:01Speaker 1: their lives, the way they embodied him, like their bodies
- 49:06Speaker 1: want to, it's really wild.
- 49:08Speaker 4: It's so wild.
- 49:10Speaker 2: Joseph Gamble primitive stuff.
- 49:11Speaker 4: That's so interestingly put. That's really interesting.
- 49:15Speaker 2: They want to get in that crouch.
- 49:17Speaker 3: Yes.
- 49:17Speaker 1: And they want to leap and it's so fun with
- 49:21Speaker 1: those kinds of films where you watch people come out
- 49:24Speaker 1: of the film and they're just moving like dancers to
- 49:27Speaker 1: like how it's so cool and um i just want
- 49:29Speaker 1: to talk about sally.
- 49:30Speaker 4: Field oh my god yeah let's do that.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Isn't she wow She's so good at acting.
- 49:36Speaker 4: She's one of the best.
- 49:38Speaker 2: She really is.
- 49:39Speaker 4: She's maybe one of the best.
- 49:40Speaker 2: You've worked with some amazing women.
- 49:42Speaker 4: Fucking hell.
- 49:42Speaker 2: And congratulations. You seem to really love women and everybody
- 49:45Speaker 2: can tell.
- 49:46Speaker 4: Thank God.
- 49:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Women love you and you can tell.
- 49:52Speaker 1: And Sally is, I don't know, I just, what was
- 49:55Speaker 1: it like to work with her?
- 49:56Speaker 2: What is she like to be around?
- 49:58Speaker 4: She's beautiful. one of the great people alive or dead
- 50:03Speaker 4: for that matter. But she's so weirdly still humble. It's
- 50:12Speaker 4: a weird thing. I would say she has legend status.
- 50:16Speaker 4: She's like icon legend status as a performer, as an actor,
- 50:20Speaker 4: as a person. And somehow she's retained... a kind of homespun, grounded... Again,
- 50:31Speaker 4: in the same way that Redford made me relax. Sally
- 50:35Speaker 4: is someone that you just feel like you're with the
- 50:38Speaker 4: best friend, aunt you could ever wish for. I was
- 50:42Speaker 4: thinking about this the other day, actually. I think one
- 50:44Speaker 4: of the great... highlights and privileges of my life was
- 50:47Speaker 4: to be able to give her a Lifetime Achievement Award
- 50:49Speaker 4: at the SAG Awards.
- 50:50Speaker 1: A few years ago.
- 50:50Speaker 2: Yeah, that was so great.
- 50:52Speaker 4: I felt so lucky. I almost said no because I
- 50:54Speaker 4: just didn't think that I could handle it because it
- 50:57Speaker 4: was so... It was such an honor because she is
- 51:00Speaker 4: so beloved and rightly so. And she's so... beautifully extraordinary
- 51:07Speaker 4: and ordinary side. She honors her ordinariness in such an inspiring,
- 51:11Speaker 4: I really can't believe I can even talk about her
- 51:13Speaker 4: in this fashion.
- 51:14Speaker 2: It's so funny you say that. She's so, so, so talented.
- 51:17Speaker 1: And she's probably her and Meryl, probably the two most
- 51:23Speaker 1: influential actresses for me growing up.
- 51:27Speaker 2: But she never felt above or below us ever she
- 51:33Speaker 2: never put herself that way no no.
- 51:34Speaker 4: No it was always just like.
- 51:37Speaker 1: Just her there's a million people that would have wanted
- 51:40Speaker 1: to talk to me today about you I know.
- 51:42Speaker 4: About this part of your thing I'm nervous I'm like
- 51:45Speaker 4: excited and nervous and you got.
- 51:47Speaker 1: Someone to come and say something you have so many
- 51:48Speaker 1: friends you have so many talented friends and they all
- 51:50Speaker 1: love you and they all want to it's you know
- 51:53Speaker 1: it is it's a really you should know that it's
- 51:56Speaker 1: a really nice thing when you have a guest on
- 51:58Speaker 1: and there's like so many people that would want.
- 52:00Speaker 2: To speak well behind your back.
- 52:02Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 52:03Speaker 1: But we talked today to Lin-Manuel Miranda and, um, he
- 52:07Speaker 1: talked about the process, you know, of, of working with
- 52:10Speaker 1: you and, and how, you know, when he said, you know, um,
- 52:16Speaker 1: Can you sing?
- 52:17Speaker 2: And you were like, when are you going to make this?
- 52:20Speaker 2: And he was like, in a year. And you were like, yes.
- 52:22Speaker 2: Which is amazing.
- 52:23Speaker 4: I love that.
- 52:24Speaker 1: And that is, now knowing a little bit more about
- 52:27Speaker 1: your competitive spirit, I understand that.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Which is like, I can do it, coach. Yes, yes.
- 52:32Speaker 2: So true. His question was, he just spoke a little
- 52:35Speaker 2: bit about how.
- 52:36Speaker 1: What a good swimmer you are and how he didn't
- 52:38Speaker 1: know that. And he called you the Michael Phelps of acting.
- 52:43Speaker 3: Which, you know.
- 52:45Speaker 2: Not that big of a deal.
- 52:46Speaker 4: A lot of competition there. No. Who would that be?
- 52:49Speaker 4: Me and I don't know who else.
- 52:50Speaker 2: Do you swim a lot? Do you like to swim?
- 52:52Speaker 4: I still swim.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I still swim. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:55Speaker 4: I surf now. It's translated. Ah. Yeah, it's like my gymnastics.
- 53:00Speaker 4: I was a gymnast when I was a kid. That
- 53:01Speaker 4: translated into like, you know, Spider-Man stuff.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:05Speaker 4: I took all of the stuff that my dad was
- 53:07Speaker 4: trying to like discipline me with and I turned into
- 53:09Speaker 4: something like a fun version of those things. Like with swimming,
- 53:12Speaker 4: it was like up at 5 a.m. You know, swimmers
- 53:13Speaker 4: like they train. It's crazy.
- 53:16Speaker 2: I know.
- 53:16Speaker 4: So I turned that into surfing. So like my paddle
- 53:19Speaker 4: is pretty strong and I can, yeah. So I surf
- 53:22Speaker 4: more than I swim. But I swim, I don't really
- 53:25Speaker 4: swim swim anymore. I'll do like open water swimming and
- 53:28Speaker 4: swimming in the sea and like swimming in ponds and
- 53:30Speaker 4: like natural places.
- 53:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Do you have long arms?
- 53:34Speaker 4: I don't think that's any of your business.
- 53:35Speaker 3: Fine. Fine.
- 53:38Speaker 2: Well, I'm not going to tell you what Lynn said.
- 53:40Speaker 4: I know that your least strong sense is your vision.
- 53:44Speaker 4: But you could have made an effort to just look
- 53:46Speaker 4: at the arms.
- 53:48Speaker 2: I'm like, do you have long arms?
- 53:49Speaker 4: Do you have long arms? Okay. Can you clear something
- 53:51Speaker 4: up for me? This has been bugging me this whole time.
- 53:53Speaker 2: I'm like, let me see.
- 53:54Speaker 4: Are your arms long or are they short? Where are
- 53:56Speaker 4: they in the spectrum?
- 53:57Speaker 2: Come closer to me. I need to smell and see
- 53:59Speaker 2: if your arms are long.
- 54:01Speaker 3: Okay.
- 54:02Speaker 1: But he said, first of all, he was like, ask
- 54:05Speaker 1: Andrew what.
- 54:08Speaker 1: He said.
- 54:08Speaker 4: The only way is I can Columbo with this. Oh,
- 54:11Speaker 4: my God. The only way I can figure out.
- 54:14Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good Peter Falk. Peter Falk, me and
- 54:17Speaker 2: him have the same birthday. Not to brag.
- 54:19Speaker 4: Let me smell it. Just one more thing. One more thing.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Let me smell your arms. Just because the murderer had
- 54:27Speaker 4: particularly long swimmer's arms.
- 54:30Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 54:31Speaker 4: I just... Not wearing my glasses. But my nose is strong.
- 54:36Speaker 4: So I'd like to just... Ah, never mind.
- 54:38Speaker 3: I'm out.
- 54:40Speaker 4: Ah, one more thing.
- 54:41Speaker 1: One more thing?
- 54:42Speaker 3: Can I smell your arm?
- 54:44Speaker 2: This one even smells like chlorine. Have you been in
- 54:48Speaker 2: the pool?
- 54:50Speaker 3: Oh, shit.
- 54:51Speaker 2: God, Peter Falk.
- 54:53Speaker 4: Fucking Peter Falk.
- 54:53Speaker 1: You guys remember Peter Falk, right? Anyone under the age
- 54:57Speaker 1: of 50? Columbo, God damn it.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Love Globo so much.
- 55:03Speaker 1: But so Lynn's question for you was, what other secret,
- 55:08Speaker 1: you know, he had a two-parter. First was like, what
- 55:10Speaker 1: other secret, what other secret are you good at that
- 55:12Speaker 1: we don't know yet? I know. He's like, tell us
- 55:15Speaker 1: now so a.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Director can know.
- 55:18Speaker 1: But he basically was basically saying like, you know, does
- 55:21Speaker 1: anything feel like too much of a challenge? You do
- 55:25Speaker 1: a lot of, you really take on a lot of
- 55:27Speaker 1: challenges for the work that you do. You're game.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 55:31Speaker 4: That's a cool question. It's a question that I've been
- 55:33Speaker 4: asking myself. You know what I'm really scared of? Yeah?
- 55:39Speaker 4: I'm going to tell you anyway. Being a dad scares
- 55:45Speaker 4: the shit out of me. You're going to be so great.
- 55:49Speaker 4: It scares me so much.
- 55:51Speaker 2: You're going to be so great. Don't even worry.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Seriously even if you get 50 mommy's proud of my
- 56:01Speaker 1: hair is that what you're saying mother is proud mother
- 56:05Speaker 1: is proud if you're gonna be the fact andrew that
- 56:08Speaker 1: you even say.
- 56:10Speaker 6: It yeah well i mean i think that yeah that
- 56:14Speaker 6: would be the biggest most important thing i ever probably
- 56:17Speaker 6: do yeah and i and i i know that to
- 56:19Speaker 6: be true it makes me want.
- 56:20Speaker 4: To Cry thinking about it.
- 56:22Speaker 2: Cry, cry, cry, cry. I love when boys cry on here.
- 56:27Speaker 4: Cry, cry, cry.
- 56:29Speaker 2: Talk about being a dad.
- 56:30Speaker 4: It's like, fuck, man.
- 56:33Speaker 2: Yes, you'd be so good.
- 56:34Speaker 4: I know what it's like to be on the other
- 56:36Speaker 4: end of it.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Yes, I know.
- 56:37Speaker 4: You know what I mean? I've been a child.
- 56:39Speaker 2: I know, it's really.
- 56:40Speaker 4: I've been a son.
- 56:41Speaker 2: Yes, we have all been born from dads. And sometimes not, right?
- 56:46Speaker 4: Right? I don't know. Don't cancel us.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I'm sorry. We're all born however we want.
- 56:52Speaker 4: Fuck.
- 56:59Speaker 2: Wait, but let's get back to you crying. But you're
- 57:05Speaker 2: going to be such a good dad.
- 57:06Speaker 1: You're going to nail it.
- 57:09Speaker 4: I want to do it. I do want to do it.
- 57:12Speaker 4: You can sometimes feel a bit selfish with I want
- 57:14Speaker 4: to be a dad. I'm like, well, I don't know.
- 57:16Speaker 4: I don't know. So in terms of a challenge, I
- 57:19Speaker 4: can't imagine a greater challenge than taking that kind of responsibility.
- 57:25Speaker 4: And then there was another question about stuff I'm good.
- 57:30Speaker 3: At.
- 57:31Speaker 4: I'll respond in a sad way.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Always.
- 57:36Speaker 4: And it relates back to the body failing.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Oh, my God. What are you going to say?
- 57:43Speaker 4: I'm going to have some felt real quick.
- 57:45Speaker 2: Just grab something.
- 57:46Speaker 4: Get that fell back in my hand. Let's get that
- 57:48Speaker 4: touch going. Sweet fell.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Let's do a little, yeah.
- 57:52Speaker 4: I was playing basketball recently. I love basketball. And I thought,
- 57:58Speaker 4: I think I'm pretty good at basketball.
- 58:00Speaker 2: I have a theory about this.
- 58:05Speaker 1: I think the worst injuries happen with men in their
- 58:08Speaker 1: 40s when they play basketball.
- 58:09Speaker 4: It's a theory that's backed up with a lot of evidence.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Go ahead. What did you do?
- 58:15Speaker 4: Columbo's sister. Columbo's sister.
- 58:22Speaker 2: She comes and she's like, Columbo, let's get out of here.
- 58:25Speaker 2: And he goes, wait a minute.
- 58:28Speaker 1: She's like, you said you were leaving like 10 minutes ago.
- 58:36Speaker 1: Columbo's sister is like, get in the car. Jesus, you
- 58:41Speaker 1: had your keys in your hand for 10 minutes.
- 58:43Speaker 2: I've been waiting in the car. Colin was like, just
- 58:46Speaker 2: a second.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Okay, sorry, sorry. Okay, basketball. Let's get back on track.
- 58:53Speaker 4: I was playing basketball with some friends. I was playing
- 58:59Speaker 4: with Woody Harrelson.
- 59:00Speaker 3: Oh, great.
- 59:01Speaker 2: He's a good basketball player.
- 59:02Speaker 3: I know that.
- 59:02Speaker 4: Why Men Can't Jump is one of my all-time favorite movies.
- 59:06Speaker 4: Why am I holding these felts like they're cards in
- 59:08Speaker 4: a poker game?
- 59:11Speaker 2: I'm like, do you have... Do you have.
- 59:14Speaker 4: Put everything into a game.
- 59:15Speaker 2: We're just playing Uno. Do you have orange cheese?
- 59:18Speaker 1: Crank.
- 59:20Speaker 4: Okay, sorry. Come on, Andrew, focus! If anyone's not watching
- 59:25Speaker 4: this and just listening to it on the podcast, fuck it,
- 59:28Speaker 4: I'm so sorry. We've been holding cheeseburgers.
- 59:31Speaker 2: This whole time. I'm so sorry.
- 59:33Speaker 4: Oh, Jesus Christ. I was playing with Woody, who I
- 59:37Speaker 4: love and I've been a fan of forever. And Why
- 59:40Speaker 4: Men Can't Jump is just one of those all-time great movies.
- 59:42Speaker 4: And he's just one of my all-time favorite performances of
- 59:44Speaker 4: all time. All time, all time, all time. And I
- 59:48Speaker 4: was so excited to play with him. And then as
- 59:49Speaker 4: soon as we got on the court, I just froze.
- 59:51Speaker 4: I was just like... You got it in your head.
- 59:56Speaker 4: I was just like the seven-year-old at the party that
- 59:59Speaker 4: just wants to go home.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Oh, God, yes.
- 1:00:01Speaker 4: Oh, God, yes. I was just so scared.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: It was like fight or flight or freeze.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: I froze. I folded. I fully froze and folded. And
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: I played really badly. I just want to apologize to
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: everyone in that game.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: And that's tough for a competitive person like you.
- 1:00:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: I froze.
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: I was just like, I love Woody so much. And
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: I've been wanting to play with him for so long.
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: And it was finally our time. And he still plays great.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: And he's like, you know.
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: I don't think he should. Woody, if you're listening, you're
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: going to blow out your knee.
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: He's taking really good care of himself. But he's fiercely competitive.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: And I love it. I absolutely love it. Anyway, so
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: a thing that I thought was a hidden talent, Lynn,
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: turns out.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: It's gone.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: It was never maybe there. So there we have it.
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: You made a movie that took place in 1381. Yeah.
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: And it is about a peasant uprising. It looks badass.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: It's cool.
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I saw the trailer for it and the feeling of like, Whoa,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: this is a very political, very interesting movie to make
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: right now. And what is it about?
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: Yeah, it's about true events in that period of British history.
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: It's called The Peasants' Revolt. And it was a big
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: uprising among the British. ordinary folk of the of the
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: British Isles that came together in an organized way and
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: it's um it's told the story is told in a
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: way that is very unique and it's because it's this
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: it's one of my favorite directors of all time Paul
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Greengrass who people would have seen a lot of his
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: amazing films like Captain Phillips or the Bourne series movies
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: with Matt Damon and or United 93 or Bloody Sunday,
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: The News of the World with Tom Hanks. Some of
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: my favorite films of all time. I've wanted to work
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: with Paul forever. And it brings up really interesting questions
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: about revolution, about violence in revolution, whether it's needed, whether
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: it's not, how change can happen without some form of
- 1:02:02Speaker 4: military coup. It's really a visceral story.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: It's so cool. It looks incredible.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: And it's a ride as well. It's also just like
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: a really entertaining kind of action film. It's like a
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: really cool movie.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: And it also has my scariest kind of villain, which
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: is a boy king.
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: Oh yeah, boy king. Tyrant boy king.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: Tyrant boy king.
- 1:02:20Speaker 4: Oh yeah.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: Oh, there's nothing scarier.
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And it was real. Richard, this King
- 1:02:26Speaker 4: Richard was 14 years old.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: And he had.
- 1:02:29Speaker 4: And at that time, this is what's crazy, at that time,
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: and it wasn't metaphorical, it was literal, the king was
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: the messenger of God's word on the earth. So anything
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: that the king uttered was literally treated like it was
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: sent from heaven above. And any equivocation of that meant
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: you were a treasonous and traitor to the throne. So
- 1:02:53Speaker 4: anything that this boy decides, this 14-year-old boy who is
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: being governed a lot by these money hoarding, power hoarding,
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: land hoarding oligarchs, was treated, there was no question. It
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: was just like, that's the way it is. Water is wet.
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: Sky is blue. The king is God on earth. Okay.
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: That's that. So that level of power, it's a really interesting...
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: thing for right now.
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I need to finish our... I need to finish. You
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: need to go.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: You have like 45, but 45 other things to do tonight.
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: But... No, this is lovely.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: But I want to finish by asking you the question
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: I ask everybody, which is, what are you listening to, watching.
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: numbing out.
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: With what kind of numbing out man.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: Okay what do you what do you what video do
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: you like what.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Movie what video what's your video what's your video sometimes
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: it's just a video of like a bird eating.
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: What's your video right now we're back.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: On the first date now we're back in the first
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: day and you're like what's your favorite video what video
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: what video do.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: You watch when you weren't When you want to turn
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: off your head.
- 1:04:03Speaker 4: Yeah, watch the video.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: What video do you watch?
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: My favorite video right now is I've been watching a
- 1:04:11Speaker 4: lot of Roy Horn of Siegfried and Roy fame because
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: I play Roy Horn in this upcoming Apple TV show
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: and we just finished. Do you know this?
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: I love this for you.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: Bro, it's really fun.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: You're playing Roy Horn?
- 1:04:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:04:24Speaker 4: So I've been watching lots of Roy Horne videos.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: Is that why your hair is so luscious?
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: Yes, yes. That's partly. But then we just end up
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: putting wigs on of the same hair. Yeah. It's like,
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: can I get a wig of this on this hair? Yeah, great.
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: That makes sense. No, no, no. It does make sense.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Oh, my God.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: We're playing them through me and Jude Law. Jude Law's
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: playing Siegfried. And we're playing them through the decades, from
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: their 20s through to their 60s. It's amazing. So fun.
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: It was so hard. Manticore. Manticore.
- 1:04:49Speaker 5: Maneater.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: It means Maneater. Excuse me? The name means Maneater.
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: I did not know that. The tiger that.
- 1:04:57Speaker 4: There was an incident with. We say incident. There was
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: an accident.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: There was an accident.
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: Was named Manticore, which means man eater.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I cannot wait for this project.
- 1:05:07Speaker 4: And Roy Hand raised him. Yeah. Wow. And Roy, so
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: I'm obsessed. Yes. And I'm still obsessed. That's a good
- 1:05:15Speaker 4: sign that we were prepping for a year. We shot
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: it for six months and I'm still obsessed with Roy.
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: I still adore him and his spirit. Yes. So I've
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: just been watching lots of footage of him for the
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: last year and a half and I continue to watch
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: it because I just adore him.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: And have you handled tigers? Have you been near tigers?
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: I have been near tigers, yes. But only in a
- 1:05:37Speaker 4: very legal and safe way. But I did feed a
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: tiger by hand, which was kind of incredible.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: Tigers are amazing. And I say to them, good day, sir.
- 1:05:51Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: I say to tigers, and I, and it is nice
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: to meet you.
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: And I shall take my leave because tigers scare the fuck.
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: Out of me. Yeah. They lived with them.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: I know.
- 1:06:08Speaker 4: He hit a thing in the morning. He hit a
- 1:06:11Speaker 4: button as he woke up and it sent a bell
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: into the garden letting the tiger that he wanted know
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: it was time to come and snuggle. The tiger came
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: into the house, came up to the bed, jumped on bed,
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: and they snuggled to wake Roy up.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: He was something else.
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: He was something else.
- 1:06:31Speaker 2: Andrew Garfield.
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: Amy Poehler.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: We have talked so much. This was so fun.
- 1:06:36Speaker 4: A lot of yapping. We yapped.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: We yapped.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: We had a yap.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: I knew we would.
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: Me too. It's been a while.
- 1:06:42Speaker 3: I know.
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: It's so fun to be with you. I love talking
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: to you.
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: I feel like we're from the same planet in some regard.
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: I feel like we're from some kind of same universe,
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: which I love just being with you and I've always have.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: I remember when I first met you, It was with
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: Jane Aronson, Dr. Jane Aronson of the Worldwide Orphans Foundation.
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: And I was really nervous to meet you because I'm
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: just a huge fan of yours. And I just think
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: you're just so wonderful. I hadn't known many famous people
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: at that point. And you were just like so warm
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: and engulfing and encouraging and caring in such a genuine
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: way that made me feel a lot of hope for
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: for being a person in this world. You're a beautiful,
- 1:07:24Speaker 4: beautiful person. I really adore you.
