- 0:01Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Training Camp Cast. The Patriots Training
- 0:09Speaker 1: Camp Cast is your source for all the news from
- 0:11Speaker 1: Patriots Training Camp. Well, I do still watch the news.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Practice is over, but the writers of Patriots dot com
- 0:17Speaker 1: have you covered? What did I miss yesterday? Now here
- 0:19Speaker 1: to review today's practice? The writers of Patriots dot com,
- 0:23Speaker 1: All right, we are here, fresh off the field from
- 0:25Speaker 1: practice number ten of Patriots Training Campus. Might do so.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Evan Lazar, Paul Pirello, Patriots dot Com here to get
- 0:32Speaker 1: you caught up on everything that happened out on the
- 0:33Speaker 1: field today. And guys, I want to just start quickly with,
- 0:36Speaker 1: you know, some housekeeping. Some guys return today, which I
- 0:38Speaker 1: think is certainly notable, headlined by Matthew Judon, who had
- 0:42Speaker 1: missed the last couple of practices, but also Gilani Tavai,
- 0:45Speaker 1: who was injured last time we saw. I guess it
- 0:47Speaker 1: was two times ago. He was president in the stadium,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but he was out there practicing today. It was in
- 0:51Speaker 1: full pads and as well as the first appearance of
- 0:54Speaker 1: Chason Hines, a rookie guard. So Patriots having some luck here.
- 0:58Speaker 1: As far as the injuries go, how Isaiah Win was
- 1:00Speaker 1: limited a little bit, so it comes in it goes.
- 1:03Speaker 1: But overall, guys, it was, you know, another day of
- 1:06Speaker 1: kind of what we've been seeing. A lot of plays
- 1:08Speaker 1: by the defense and sporadic nature of the offense. Yeah,
- 1:11Speaker 1: we've gotten to the point where if you've seen the
- 1:12Speaker 1: last couple of practices, you've seen the latest one because
- 1:15Speaker 1: it doesn't really change. There was and Evan, I know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: we'll talk about this more in depth than I will,
- 1:20Speaker 1: but there was a you know, a couple of periods
- 1:22Speaker 1: of it looked like the tempo was a little bit better,
- 1:26Speaker 1: a lot of shotgun, a lot of spreads, and it
- 1:29Speaker 1: looked like there was more of an idea. Now, I
- 1:31Speaker 1: didn't think the results were necessarily all that much better.
- 1:34Speaker 1: There were a couple of passes here and there, and
- 1:36Speaker 1: then very late I thought back to back plays in
- 1:39Speaker 1: a hurry up. He had Hunter Henry on a like
- 1:43Speaker 1: a drag to the outside and then you know, one
- 1:46Speaker 1: over the middle and a cross or to agalore. You know,
- 1:49Speaker 1: two pretty sizable games where you know, the offense looked
- 1:53Speaker 1: like it had a clue. But overall, still I would
- 1:56Speaker 1: say that the tempo was being dictated by the defense.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Son of our IV. Yeah, we saw the frustration for
- 2:01Speaker 1: David Andrews at least boil over. It felt like we
- 2:04Speaker 1: obviously are not privy to what exactly he was saying.
- 2:06Speaker 1: In an offense only huddle after practice bringing the guys
- 2:11Speaker 1: together was pretty animated. I'm not going to guess what
- 2:14Speaker 1: he had to say, but that was the view of it.
- 2:17Speaker 1: And then he came to the podium and clear frustration
- 2:20Speaker 1: from the Patriot Center. Who's been here long enough to
- 2:22Speaker 1: know what a championship caliber offense and all that sort
- 2:25Speaker 1: of stuff looks like. Now what Paul was saying about
- 2:29Speaker 1: what they were running out there, I thought that there
- 2:31Speaker 1: was some positives from that angle where you spread the field,
- 2:35Speaker 1: you put Mac in the shotgun. He looked more comfortable
- 2:38Speaker 1: at times and that sort of alignment than maybe he
- 2:41Speaker 1: has at times under center so far this summer. So
- 2:45Speaker 1: I would venture to say that we might end up
- 2:48Speaker 1: we could come back in October and November we're doing
- 2:50Speaker 1: a show and say that stuff that we saw from
- 2:53Speaker 1: the second half of that practice and the third week
- 2:56Speaker 1: of training camp was more what the offense has looked like,
- 2:59Speaker 1: and say we saw in the first two weeks of
- 3:01Speaker 1: training camp when they were doing some more of the
- 3:03Speaker 1: Shanahan stuff. So I think that that's maybe something that
- 3:06Speaker 1: you can hang your hat on. And Bill Belichick gave
- 3:08Speaker 1: a nice answer before practice about we're constantly reevaluating ourselves
- 3:14Speaker 1: right even in the season, during the season, training camp, preseason,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and at different times we might decide we got to
- 3:21Speaker 1: go in a different direction here, and maybe we saw
- 3:23Speaker 1: some inklings of them going in some different directions out
- 3:26Speaker 1: of practice today and it wasn't all terrible. I'd like
- 3:29Speaker 1: to just say, you know, I thought Nelson Agolore had
- 3:30Speaker 1: a you know, a couple of really good reps in
- 3:32Speaker 1: one on ones. I mean, he just seems to be
- 3:34Speaker 1: generally active. I mean, we're you know, Grassma Straw is
- 3:36Speaker 1: a little bit trying to highlight the positive, but there
- 3:38Speaker 1: have been moments and I think Aglore has looked pretty good.
- 3:40Speaker 1: And you know, meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, Paul,
- 3:42Speaker 1: I mean, it seems like guys are you know, you
- 3:45Speaker 1: don't know who's bad and who's good between the offensive defense.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Right now, it looks like the defense is pretty good.
- 3:49Speaker 1: They've begetting their hands on the balls, they've been disruptive
- 3:51Speaker 1: of It was funny. Someone asked Matthew Jude on that
- 3:54Speaker 1: you know toward the you know, after practice is it
- 3:56Speaker 1: kind of hard to judge which is how well you
- 3:58Speaker 1: guys are playing because the office into struggling and and
- 4:01Speaker 1: I thought he was pretty forthcoming too, as I look,
- 4:03Speaker 1: we're not really concerned about that. We're trying to stop them.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Our job is to stop them. We need to set
- 4:08Speaker 1: the edge, we need to stuff the middle of them.
- 4:09Speaker 1: We need to be strong on the back end, and
- 4:12Speaker 1: that's what we're trying to do. So we can't, you know,
- 4:14Speaker 1: sort of worry about what they're doing on offense. And
- 4:17Speaker 1: I thought, especially the second eleven on eleven period, really
- 4:21Speaker 1: aggressive on defense. I thought they threw some blitzes at
- 4:25Speaker 1: them they weren't ready for. I thought Marcus Jones came
- 4:27Speaker 1: out of the slot on one play. Another one, I
- 4:30Speaker 1: think Evan's right, it was like it was like a
- 4:32Speaker 1: zero coverage blitz right there, and Malcolm Butler almost cut
- 4:35Speaker 1: underneath Parker to make an interception. But right now, to
- 4:40Speaker 1: protect I think it all starts with the offensive line.
- 4:42Speaker 1: They're gonna have to get some of these issues straightened out.
- 4:44Speaker 1: But the rhythm of the offense just doesn't look right consistently.
- 4:48Speaker 1: The ball's not coming out when it should. Part of
- 4:50Speaker 1: that is on Mac. It's not just protection and it's
- 4:52Speaker 1: not just guys not getting open. The ball needs to
- 4:54Speaker 1: come out more regularly like it did in that seven
- 4:57Speaker 1: on seven period where it looked like there was some
- 4:59Speaker 1: more t empo involved. And then later I'm gonna give
- 5:02Speaker 1: you one more positive offensively. You mentioned Agalore. I think
- 5:06Speaker 1: every day it looks like Taekwon Thornton continues to make
- 5:09Speaker 1: some strides. And there was a period and again it
- 5:12Speaker 1: was mostly backup, second string, second and third team, a
- 5:16Speaker 1: hurry up drill late and I think it was Horrior
- 5:18Speaker 1: playing quarterback back to back, driving Jack Jones off, you know,
- 5:23Speaker 1: really cutting hard, maybe ten twelve fifteen yard outs, wide
- 5:28Speaker 1: open twice and then you know, predictably, when you when
- 5:31Speaker 1: you get beating a guy on outs, what are you
- 5:33Speaker 1: gonna do? You're gonna get downfield and you got open
- 5:35Speaker 1: in the end zone. It looked like they got tripped
- 5:37Speaker 1: up a little bit. May have been a penalty on
- 5:39Speaker 1: Jack Jones, but Thornton consistently gets open every practice. I
- 5:42Speaker 1: thought this was Tykwon Thornton's best practice of the summer.
- 5:45Speaker 1: We saw him earlier in one on ones Malcolm Butler
- 5:47Speaker 1: and Terrence Mitchell trying to get their hands on him
- 5:49Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage, had no chance. He beat
- 5:51Speaker 1: both of them down the field. The one against Mitchell
- 5:53Speaker 1: in particular was a nasty release at the line of
- 5:56Speaker 1: scrimmage and he got right away. From press coverage there
- 6:00Speaker 1: mentioned the Jack Jones plays laid in practice. Don't want
- 6:03Speaker 1: to hype him up too much, but Taekwon I think
- 6:06Speaker 1: gets better and better, and for me today was probably
- 6:08Speaker 1: the best practice we've seen him have. I agree that's
- 6:11Speaker 1: a positive. Yeah, that's the thing I would hang my
- 6:12Speaker 1: hat on right now. If you're listening to this at
- 6:14Speaker 1: home and you're saying, oh, the offense is really struggling,
- 6:16Speaker 1: what I would hang my hat on is that Taekwon
- 6:18Speaker 1: Doran looks like he's coming along nicely. You got a
- 6:21Speaker 1: fast guy with some length. One more thing I thought
- 6:23Speaker 1: it was interesting, Paul pointed out Marcus Jones. Marcus Jones
- 6:26Speaker 1: getting a little bit of run on the top group
- 6:27Speaker 1: with a slot a little bit. We're seeing Jonathan Jones
- 6:29Speaker 1: on the outside a little bit more. Two guys very fast,
- 6:32Speaker 1: good at matching and coverage. We know, you know, Jonathan
- 6:34Speaker 1: Jones has some experience with Tyreek Hill. Maybe that's a
- 6:37Speaker 1: potential option for Miami. But we will be back tomorrow.
- 6:40Speaker 1: Another practice in the late afternoon is Bill Belichick has
- 6:42Speaker 1: thrown us a little bit of a curveball. Still a
- 6:44Speaker 1: little toasty out there, but all our content will be
- 6:46Speaker 1: coming out a little bit later, as you can expect.
- 6:48Speaker 1: So of course we're back tomorrow with another one of
- 6:51Speaker 1: these podcasts to wrap up. I guess they'll be the
- 6:53Speaker 1: last practice here before we head to the first game
- 6:55Speaker 1: of the season. Yeah, the Giants Thursday night. Hard to believe.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's fast approach. Very curious to see how all of
- 7:01Speaker 1: this translates onto the game field, even if it is
- 7:03Speaker 1: with some of the backups. So for Evan and Paul,
- 7:06Speaker 1: this is Deuce. We'll see you next time. Thank you
