- 2:20Got a neat kind of impromptu guests lined up for us today,
- 2:25here on today's episode. This, this guest kind of just
- 2:32don't know, like, we don't talk much on a regular basis but we
- 2:39recently just had like a A random conversation over
- 2:44Facebook and said, hey man, do you ever listen to my podcast?
- 2:50You ever think about coming on as a guest?
- 2:52He was like a really don't know, you know, don't really listen to
- 2:55podcasts that much but kind of a neat guy and I'm hoping that
- 2:59between our history together. How we met you know which was
- 3:05through the music scene. Actually some years ago and
- 3:08maybe today in today's podcast that will get to know each other
- 3:13a little bit more. So you know he's definitely a an
- 3:21interesting fella in terms of The mystery surrounding him.
- 3:28Maybe that's just me being me right now because like, we don't
- 3:32talk that much. I don't have a lot of great
- 3:35dealings with him, but I don't know.
- 3:36He just has this kind of like Aura of mystery about him and
- 3:39when you guys see him today, for those that are watching on the,
- 3:44you know, video platforms for this podcast, you'll kind of see
- 3:48what I mean. He's just, he's got this really,
- 3:50you know, awesome wizardly demeanor in this Orange.
- 3:55Stuff about him and I'm hoping that we get to learn a little
- 3:58bit more overall. He's a musician.
- 4:01We're actually going to listen to like a like a demo of a song
- 4:08for one of his many projects. He's got several here in the
- 4:12Middle Tennessee area that I'm aware of at least.
- 4:15He also manages a believe his own label has and has put out a
- 4:20number of songs and albums are EPS.
- 4:26I can't remember all of which we're going to get into talking,
- 4:28you know, about some of that stuff here when he comes on.
- 4:31But before he does I want you guys to listen to this.
- 4:34This is a, this is a track that is currently.
- 4:40It's in like a demo stage, right?
- 4:42But it's I don't know, it's really, really gnarly.
- 4:46And this is just kind of like covers.
- 4:49Just the scratching of the surface level.
- 4:51So you know today we don't know yet what we're going to be
- 4:53getting into, we're going to be talking about some of his music.
- 4:55We're going to be talking about why he's on a heathen podcast.
- 4:58He actually owns a set of rooms that I made years ago.
- 5:02I one of the very first Rune sets that I sold during the
- 5:06Nashville Pagan Pride event which is an annual event.
- 5:12The first year that I was a vendor there and selling some
- 5:18wood Burned crafts at my wife and I made one of the Rune sets
- 5:24that I had for sale there, he purchased and that's kind of
- 5:30the, the way the conversation started with us just the other
- 5:33day. Like you know, we follow his
- 5:34stuff on social media, he follows me but likes the
- 5:38conversation that we had randomly the other day was hey
- 5:41man, you know, I still have your runes and I still work with them
- 5:46and you know, the rooms that I bought from you rather the ones
- 5:48that you may die. I still have them and and
- 5:50whatnot, and it was just a really touching thing to hear,
- 5:53from someone who I don't have regular conversations with, but
- 5:57that still nonetheless felt it, you know, expedient to let me
- 6:03know that the the thing that I, you know, made not necessarily
- 6:07for them but that they, you know, purchased through me is is
- 6:12serving them, well, in his and that they're, they're able to
- 6:15find good use for them. You know, so without further Ado
- 6:21guys, I'm going to introduce his name is Ryan, by the way, Ryan
- 6:25kleckner. And so for any like the Middle,
- 6:28Tennessee folks that are listening and watching some of
- 6:32the bands that have come through, Ryan's mind.
- 6:37You know, his mind child is aware of the project he's been
- 6:39involved in will hopefully be aware of but yeah, this this
- 6:44song that I want to just play with you before we get him on
- 6:47here, this is Attract that he's demoing currently he just shared
- 6:54it a couple of days ago for a band or for a project called
- 7:00existential dread and it's slow kind of droney Doom metal you
- 7:07think of bands like son stuff like that.
- 7:10I think you guys will if you're into that sort of thing.
- 7:12You'll you'll really dig this. But anyway this is that demo
- 7:16idea you share it on social media.
- 7:18So it's It's out here for the for the listening enjoyment of
- 7:22everyone and anyone. So let's take a listen to it
- 7:25real quick, and then welcome in Ryan kleckner to the show today.
- 7:31So here we go. All right, all right.
- 8:43Yes, that was that was a track guys.
- 8:45And gals out here. Listen and watch.
- 8:47And that was a track. Like, I mentioned before, from
- 8:49one of Ryan's projects and existential dread.
- 8:53Now, I've got Ryan kleckner here and like I mentioned to you
- 8:57guys, when you see this, man, when I told you before that, you
- 9:00know, a very wizardly looking gentlemen.
- 9:02Ryan, welcome to the podcast. My man, thanks for joining us.
- 9:05Thank you for having me. Yeah, and So like I said, you
- 9:10know, the guy reminds me and you've probably heard this a lot
- 9:14Ryan. Just like the wizard aspect, you
- 9:16kind of look like Saruman in his prime.
- 9:20You're getting getting some of that gray going on in the beard
- 9:23but you've probably also heard of the this may not be as
- 9:28flattering, but the Rasputin, I've been through.
- 9:32I've been telling people for years, it's a total.
- 9:35I've been saying it for a long time.
- 9:38I've got that dude, I'm armed to the appropriate.
- 9:43You're not, you're not a sex position.
- 9:44Are you or maybe a sex magician? It was he known for something
- 9:49like that in the Romano of Dynasty or whatever?
- 9:51He was like a, he was a weird fellow.
- 9:54He had all kinds of weird things going on angles, for sure.
- 9:58Yeah, but yeah man, thanks for coming on the show today and
- 10:02just talking about whatever, right?
- 10:05We've got some, we got plenty of time to just kind of wrap about
- 10:08things but Um, for those that were, you know, listening and
- 10:13watching today, the music side of things.
- 10:16If it's cool. Like we listen to a brief demo
- 10:20version of something from existential dread now.
- 10:24That is, is that one of your projects or is that something
- 10:27that you're producing? No, it's mine.
- 10:30Okay, and you've gotten a number of them, right?
- 10:32Like you're not you kind of a all kinds of stuff going on at
- 10:37the same time. Multiple He's right.
- 10:40Yeah. Existential was so, so last
- 10:46year, I started a little label called Moonlight Cyprus
- 10:50archetypes Which was sort of I had stunt L as I'm sure you
- 11:01remember and then yeah, kind of turned into primeval and
- 11:06existential dread started back somewhere in there.
- 11:10For five years ago, took me forever to get the album done
- 11:16and I just was kind of at a loss for ideas and So eventually.
- 11:22With, you know, the pandemic and the attendant free time, that
- 11:27came with, it giving me an open door that ended up becoming.
- 11:34Actually the second album that I released on the new label last
- 11:39year. So, what you heard the demo that
- 11:42is It's just a demo of ideas that will eventually get
- 11:51recorded properly for the second album, which I think at this
- 11:54point, it's probably going to have to wait until 2023 anyways,
- 11:57but it's just something that I felt inspired to explore kind of
- 12:04an idea where the first album I feel like in some ways it kind
- 12:09of missed the mark like I was to head my head too.
- 12:13Full of like black metal and shit like Ike.
- 12:15Couldn't like slow down enough to do something that open.
- 12:19And so like what you played in the The Interpreter is all along
- 12:27the idea for existential dread was this way of trying to
- 12:31musically conjure up the Badlands, which is a place that
- 12:36I went to First on tour. And then I had a experience
- 12:40where I went up there alone camping about I think it was
- 12:47four years ago, so and had a pretty mystical, for lack of a
- 12:53better word experience there. It's pretty impossible to be
- 12:58alone in a place like that and not B.
- 13:06Extremely aware of why a place like that would have
- 13:10significance to the native populations that were there.
- 13:14Previously and still are there much more than they are in our
- 13:18part of the world. And and I still am kind of
- 13:25working through it. Like the I want to be up there
- 13:31for that like I had a friend in in the middle of Nebraska who I
- 13:44went and stayed with him, he tattooed my chest and then I
- 13:48went up there and just had this Quest of sorts where I just
- 13:55wandered around alone and let me mad.
- 13:58It was incredible hard to put into words really, and yeah, I
- 14:04actually had something similar to that on a smaller scale, but
- 14:08on a like, we talked about, like mystical experiences.
- 14:14I would say that it was a shamanic journey of sorts,
- 14:19right? Because there was was the
- 14:23incorporation of Elements that help get me there, you know?
- 14:29And if that's the same thing that we're talking about, if
- 14:31we're touching on the same kind of Wavelengths here than I then
- 14:36I know a bit about what you're talking about unless I'm unless
- 14:40I'm like Way Off the Mark here. Well, my friend there initiated
- 14:45me into what I have. Kind of jokingly.
- 14:50I lovingly referred to as the cult of the mushroom.
- 14:54Yep. I had previously not been
- 14:57exposed to a couple of fun guys. We are.
- 15:01Yeah and it definitely you know, in retrospect, I think flavored
- 15:08the experience and it was a very Shamanistic is is definitely a
- 15:18word that I would use I can recall a Time wall.
- 15:24And basically in the middle of that time that I was there
- 15:27again, being aided by Interstellar travel devices of a
- 15:35humble nature that Sit, I had found this.
- 15:42I wouldn't call it a mountain and it wasn't technically one of
- 15:46the you know, sharp escarpments as we, you know, tend to see the
- 15:52Badlands or visualize them, a very Steep Hill.
- 15:55Basically to just like I was in the wilderness section which is
- 15:58like. So if you're familiar with the
- 16:00South Dakota Badlands, there's a Wilderness section and then and
- 16:03it doesn't have a gate and I was just like man I'm just not
- 16:06paying the twenty dollar gate see I'm just going to go in
- 16:08there and that's where they said the bus.
- 16:12Lower and there's no people and I sleep, that's definitely not
- 16:15good, you know, people Buffalo. Sure.
- 16:21Okay. For like five miles going in,
- 16:24you know, I was like yeah, that's that's definitely what
- 16:26I'm doing so I you know, I find this place and I go and I climb
- 16:30up it, I sit there and you know, like true to form and that kind
- 16:36of experience. I felt the uncontrollable urge
- 16:42to To take off at least my shirt that has an in November and
- 16:47we're talking about South Dakota my so it's cold and I had my
- 16:51experience in November and it was in Tennessee but I mean it
- 16:54was on a night where it got down until like the teens and 20s.
- 16:57Yeah, it's like that man. I never felt it.
- 17:01I never felt warmer in my life and it was one of these things
- 17:06where you know out there the sky is bigger so to Oh yeah.
- 17:13And I'm sitting on this cliff and I can tell the way the
- 17:19clouds are moving, but if I look back that there is going to be a
- 17:25definite point in time where there will be no more clouds,
- 17:28and it's just like, of course, that's a Full Moon night, not
- 17:32plant, okay? It just happened.
- 17:35And that's also like the 50th time in my life that that had
- 17:40happened up to that point, which was was already now, four years
- 17:43ago, but anyway, and I'm sitting there and I just know that,
- 17:47like, if I just sit here and just Wait it out that I'll have
- 17:55some kind of like revelatory moment and it will be just me
- 18:02and the open Prairie and the Badlands and the full moon and
- 18:06that's it. Like the world is gone.
- 18:09I knew it. So I just waited and I think
- 18:11actually took like at least an hour you know, and when the moon
- 18:16finally came all the way out It produced some kind of.
- 18:24You know, like some people, I felt like a DMT experience or
- 18:26something, some kind of like third eye thing where I could
- 18:29tell that it was there was psychic movements happening that
- 18:37I was not I wasn't making it happen.
- 18:43Yeah it it Loose into something in there and I can still
- 18:52remember it. Like it happened yesterday,
- 18:54though. I would, I think I would do a
- 18:56pretty shit job of trying to explain it.
- 18:59I can feel it so to speak in my body.
- 19:03Like I can feel the memory, you know, now that this happened
- 19:06this past November. No, no, this is for years ago
- 19:09now the okay. Yeah.
- 19:12So I've been so to take it home existential.
- 19:19Dread is is like forever going to be associated with that in my
- 19:24mind because I had already started it.
- 19:28I had conceived of it, in the Badlands on a, on a stump tail.
- 19:32Tore, should probably six or seven years ago, we actually had
- 19:36to camp in the Badlands we played in Montana, and then the
- 19:39next gig was over in like, Bismarck or something.
- 19:43Just took forever to there was no way we were going to get all
- 19:46the way across. Yeah.
- 19:47So we just stopped and cowboy camped in Medora North Dakota
- 19:51and like we didn't even have tents or anything.
- 19:54We were just literally sleeping on the ground.
- 19:56Like why is that? That was the initial idea for
- 20:00existential. The next time I went back was in
- 20:04South Dakota and since then I haven't been back but I have
- 20:08still been, you know, when you have this kind of Variants.
- 20:13Like it's not just a one and done, like it's kind of you
- 20:17forever. You are changed forever, you are
- 20:19changed forever. It pre-entry programs, the very
- 20:23essence of what you are. And I truly believe that when
- 20:27done correctly, or when done and experience properly your ego
- 20:34dies. Yeah, Lose Yourself.
- 20:37Andre and are reborn in a different way and your life is
- 20:41never the same after that. Very much that sort of thing.
- 20:48And I also think Well in relation to the new existential
- 20:54dread, first of all, I felt like the one that's out now is it
- 21:00just didn't stack up to the vision.
- 21:02So I feel like I don't really give a shit about existential
- 21:05dread in. A lot of ways outside of the
- 21:08fact that it's like my job, some kind of Duty that I have to
- 21:12like, you got to see it through. I have to like make good on what
- 21:17happened right here and the first album while it's really
- 21:21good. I mean I love it and it's like
- 21:23you know it's a child of mine so to speak there.
- 21:27I just know that we're that what you played is much closer to the
- 21:34truth of the idea that I had had all along.
- 21:37And in closer, I would say Energetically, if you want to
- 21:42use that word or psychically and I don't mean psychically as in
- 21:46some new a GSB. Yeah, like the old stuff like
- 21:51old psychologically, in a very, for lack of better sense, pagan
- 21:55meaning, you know, a very palpable and felt thing.
- 22:01So, If you know that, that's where that's going.
- 22:08And I just felt that some kind of random now, that really it
- 22:14really likes. Share it, it speaks so much to
- 22:18test it on people, really? Yeah.
- 22:20No, I mean, I think hearing that explanation and hearing kind of
- 22:24this the inspiration or at least the maybe not the original
- 22:29inspiration but like where it has become due to your
- 22:34Experience, right? Because of it, like, it paints
- 22:38of such a bigger picture after listening to even just a short,
- 22:41you know, less than a minute long.
- 22:43Yeah. Floor above it because I was
- 22:44like, hey guys, you know, if you like bands like son, right?
- 22:47Yeah, it's just like drone, metal, Doom, whatever.
- 22:49Like, but it's more than just music, it's because it's
- 22:55Ambience, its noise, it's vibrations, it's things that we
- 22:59experience when we do things like what you're describing, I
- 23:03went on those shamanic or spiritual Mystic Journeys as it
- 23:08were right, because we become more in tune with the vibrations
- 23:12of the world and the universe around us that you don't feel on
- 23:15a regular basis. Not at least until you've kind
- 23:18of ventured off into those places and done those certain
- 23:21things. And then after that, you're
- 23:22like, maybe not all the time. But like, man, there are still,
- 23:26like you were talking about having those memories for years
- 23:29after the fact. I mean, I'm, you know, just like
- 23:32five months, well, no, not even. Even for November, December jet
- 23:35three months. Yeah, three months after it.
- 23:38I'm still getting those kind of, like, Memories where.
- 23:42I'll, I'll hear a certain thing or I'll look at something.
- 23:46I mean, like I said, I was laying in bed the other day, and
- 23:49my wife has this huge, like four foot long stuffed animal.
- 23:54That's a sloth or it's supposed to be a slot but it's like very
- 23:58adamant. Like, it's very animated
- 24:00looking. So it's got like rainbow colored
- 24:01fur, you know. I mean like it's not like To an
- 24:03actual slot by any means. But I was like laying there and
- 24:07this was like, I don't know, mid-morning or so, like I was
- 24:12awake. I wasn't Lucid.
- 24:14I had not been consuming, any sort of alcohol or anything like
- 24:18that, like I was completely sober and I just remember saying
- 24:21they're laying there. Looking at this stuffed animal
- 24:23who's obviously inanimate. And the fur was moving man.
- 24:27Like I'm telling you like there was like I'm like up its here we
- 24:30go again, it's one of those, one of those.
- 24:33Memories kicking in you know like where did this and it only
- 24:36lasted maybe like a minute or so.
- 24:38But I was fixated on and I couldn't turn it back and
- 24:41there's, you know, the trees look a certain way.
- 24:43The water feels a certain way like different things just
- 24:46become so much more pure, I feel and you catch those nuances of
- 24:52life that exists that we don't always capture in the moment.
- 24:57Yeah, you know, the life itself. Not our minds version of Yeah,
- 25:04like men. Like the perception of it all is
- 25:07is skewed. Without that without resetting,
- 25:10without going back to that pure, the perception can just become I
- 25:17mean, people, some people verbalize it as the perception
- 25:20can become more clear more pure, but I feel like, it's what
- 25:23you're really doing is perceiving.
- 25:25What? I just like to Loosely call in
- 25:27capitals. The other side which is just
- 25:31the, you know. Yeah.
- 25:33Just like an easier way to or sides.
- 25:37Even man. Because I mean, the multi
- 25:39dimensional aspect of existence. I don't know.
- 25:42It's you were talking about your experience in being What was it
- 25:46an actual full moon? If I remember, right?
- 25:48You were saying it was a full moon and you just kind of
- 25:50happened to be there at that moment or okay ours was to at
- 25:55least within a couple of nights of it actually being full and
- 25:58again just that presence her presence.
- 26:01I like to say like her presence was so much but more vibrant and
- 26:05authoritative in a way like she don't mess around man.
- 26:09And I mean like she was just laying and Ami.
- 26:12I remembered sitting there at one point trying to I don't know
- 26:16in my own way level with that energy and it was like sit down
- 26:22boy. You ain't got no business trying
- 26:24to do this right now. Like you got no business like to
- 26:26sit down and absorb it kind of take it and learn.
- 26:30Don't try to match me right now because you're you're not going
- 26:34to be able to and I was like whoa okay Mama like it was it
- 26:39was it was and it's interesting that we're talking about a
- 26:41project of yours that's called existential dread because guess
- 26:44what man? You Or feeling that during those
- 26:48moments at least at some point of the, I mean I was it was
- 26:50there it came in waves but man at some points I was terrified
- 26:55and it was Dreadful but in a way that didn't make me feel like
- 26:58unsafe if that's if that's you know accurate way to put it.
- 27:04I think I guess everybody has different experiences but it was
- 27:07it was Dreadful in some ways that kind of stuff can get
- 27:12pretty intense. Yeah, I And a lot of ways I
- 27:18don't know if you're familiar with Terence McKenna or not.
- 27:20Oh yeah. I've at varying points.
- 27:26Tried to follow his prescribed it was heroic dose well and the
- 27:33regularity okay I've done it both ways where it was
- 27:38irregular, it was the dose. It was smaller, I've never done
- 27:41more, but I've had a few times where It was on the scale dosage
- 27:50wise and unexpected people showed up and it got really
- 27:55fucking bad. Yeah, yeah.
- 27:58Like so there is a time in up in the mountains here where I was
- 28:10out there and somebody showed up and I was it got real weird but
- 28:16There's been other times. That like so this is actually
- 28:21one that I wanted to talk about I was kind of going to bring
- 28:26this up anyway but I had this experience.
- 28:34To actually that I think are probably specifically relevant
- 28:38to you to this podcast and how I've kind of met you and so on
- 28:43and so forth. And it was that once still in
- 28:49Nashville, I was like, I mean I've been effectively sober for
- 28:54like 11 years but I get it, you know, and 12-step and all of
- 28:59that. But I have These little windows
- 29:02and they're always in the summer, I don't know why I wear
- 29:05and developed this 12 month. Long need to partake in
- 29:15cannabis, which I normally could give a shit about.
- 29:17And I don't typically want anything to do with it, because
- 29:19it gives me anxiety and always has, but on one of these little
- 29:26Mental voyages that I set myself out on.
- 29:30I just also like it was never a mild experience for me.
- 29:33I always just wound up having experiences while stoned that
- 29:37people would talk about as being more like, Kind of mushroomy for
- 29:44lack of a better word and of them, which I wanted to tell you
- 29:48about, was that I was sitting in my room, I think, and out of
- 29:53nowhere started having this feeling, like I lived.
- 29:56Now, in the back of my mind and I was looking at the back of my
- 30:00skull forward, and my forehead was a prison bar bars, like a
- 30:05cross here, right? And I'm like, looking out from
- 30:08the back of my head, kind of up above to though.
- 30:11Though like as if there wasn't actually a top on my head, and
- 30:16there's this man who looks like, you know, I'm much older version
- 30:19of me holding the bars, shaking the bars, trying to get out.
- 30:25And he reveals himself to me, to be Odin or vote on or however.
- 30:31And he says, you have to let me out.
- 30:35And you know I was like well I tell you mr.
- 30:42Right? I didn't put you in there.
- 30:47I'll let you out who let you in the first place.
- 30:50I mean you know I was like man. I've been chewing on that one
- 30:55for a while now. So think the perception was
- 31:01like, you were looking behind him and he was trying out for he
- 31:04was looking at you from your perception of the back of your
- 31:08mind. Like how was it?
- 31:09Like, I was standing against the wall of the of the room.
- 31:15The the skull prison room that we are temporarily in, and and,
- 31:29It wasn't long after that, that the Primeval album came out.
- 31:35Mmm. And I do feel like existential
- 31:41dread, for example, has nothing to do with that kind of energy,
- 31:45right? Primeval whether I wanted it to
- 31:48or not is like full of it. Yes, and it was not intentional
- 31:58but the name for example, if I'm able, well, came to me, my
- 32:04parents live in Montana and I was with them shit to 200 three
- 32:13years ago now. They live out in Western Montana
- 32:18in the middle of nowhere. In a valley between two large
- 32:22sets of mountains. And I just like, I had been
- 32:28reading the lore quite a bit, you know, about the varying,
- 32:37like the Jackson Crawford books and the other books that were
- 32:40all over than his versions and all that kind of stuff and just
- 32:44exploring at all, any idea of primeval, well, for whatever
- 32:48reason came to me, you know, but the myth about him thrown as I
- 32:52down in the well and all of that, and yeah.
- 32:56My grandfather had a well on his property that was also out in
- 33:01the woods and the well had been covered up because apparently in
- 33:07back in the old days, somebody killed a woman and threw her
- 33:10down there and they never could find the body and it was just
- 33:13this like spooky place that I would stick my head into when I
- 33:16was a child, you know, he would always tell me, you know, you
- 33:19know, you know what you do gets gifts going to reach up there
- 33:23and grab don't want to mess with whatever that is down there.
- 33:25We We haven't opened that there was just an old sheet of plywood
- 33:29across it and he said, we don't move you don't.
- 33:32Yeah you probably don't want to do that.
- 33:34Yeah. And I've seen movies about stuff
- 33:37like that you know read read those old folk tales from
- 33:40different areas. It's like I mean the mythology
- 33:44or the metaphysical. Well, there is a mythology but
- 33:48like The Meta physical significance of the, well, we
- 33:54it's lived out even to this day In some Heathen practices and
- 34:00some Heathen circles, you know, even amongst us, we have a an in
- 34:07our tribe, right? We even have during our sambal
- 34:11ritual. We have a representation of the,
- 34:14well, that we speak over that we put our drinks and we put our
- 34:18words in to solidify luck into and to do things that it's
- 34:24because it it Absorbs everything it takes and everything but it
- 34:28also doesn't diminish things like it.
- 34:33What you put into the well stays there, it doesn't like
- 34:36eventually more layers that get added to it.
- 34:39Sound like a river that just washes away.
- 34:40It's just layer upon layer upon layer.
- 34:44Yeah you know so the like that the element is a very I think
- 34:48living thing to in within maybe not just romantic either e but
- 34:52maybe another you know polytheistic you got caught
- 34:56Aaron's Wells. You know things that are used in
- 34:58other magical or metaphysical / for those purposes, right?
- 35:04That mean those types of things. So there's a, there's a lot of I
- 35:07think power to that imagery, you know, having a name to something
- 35:11like this, that just kind of catches all of that.
- 35:15Like you say, influence from a maybe another past experience,
- 35:19like it's really interesting to think about that whole aspect of
- 35:21it. Now that you mention it.
- 35:23Well, it was interesting too. That the name came to me While I
- 35:26was with my parents because that was my mother's father, that was
- 35:30on his land. And I was very, very close with
- 35:36my grandparents more. I would say, I think than
- 35:40probably most kids, I just followed him around everywhere.
- 35:44Like I was pretty, I was kind of obsessed with him and he was a
- 35:48World War Two vet. He was a marine on Okinawa and
- 35:53you know, by the time I was about 10 years old, I He had
- 35:56told me all of the war stories that he had been holding on to
- 36:00for like a very long time and so my mom she has a sister so it
- 36:08was it was him and a bunch of women and I just don't think he
- 36:12had anybody to talk to until I came around.
- 36:15I'm the older too and you know he just Would just talk very
- 36:22freely about old things and always, and old Wars.
- 36:25And you know, I mean, he knew A new Civil War veterans.
- 36:31You know I mean this is we're going way back here, remembered
- 36:37them at least you know. So yeah.
- 36:41So he was yes. So he was, you know, born in the
- 36:441930s. So he knew, you know, the older
- 36:48among them but the last of the actual living.
- 36:53Yeah. Wow.
- 36:57And and I just like, kind of understood innately as a child
- 37:04that this Was a kind of living transmission if you will of
- 37:13stories and ideas. Viewpoints attitudes Etc, that
- 37:21came from a previous time very which was largely informed by
- 37:31Sammy, dude, you're talking at that point, you're talking the
- 37:33beginning, if not predating, the Industrial Revolution, he was
- 37:37more connected to that than or at least, equally connected
- 37:43mentally, I guess you could psychologically for sure.
- 37:46You know, he had modern cars and electricity and all that crap,
- 37:49but it was, he also grew up in the depression.
- 37:52So we're talking about a very again, in a mythological sense,
- 38:00if you will Oh, well, yeah, going all the layers being added
- 38:07right. Like, you know, we're not there
- 38:09anymore but it doesn't mean that it's not any less important
- 38:12because it lays down that Foundation of why there's
- 38:17something to build off of, or why there's a layer added on top
- 38:19of it. And that's what we talked.
- 38:21Like, you may have heard that term or log or that's the it's
- 38:25that it's that. Let literal primordial layer
- 38:28that that bottom sort of founding I'll spot in the well,
- 38:33we're right. You know we we can't help but
- 38:37ignore it because it's where we come from.
- 38:39It's part of where we're from however far back you want to try
- 38:44to go, right? Like it's there it's that
- 38:47underlying layer of existence in origin to that, you know, our
- 38:52our luck comes from our stories. Good and bad.
- 38:56Like it's all down there. It doesn't just go away, right?
- 39:02But that get, that's interesting that, you know, your living
- 39:05experience at that, you know, with your grandparents and your
- 39:10family, where would you say, I mean, or could you recall was
- 39:15anything about that that you would today call Pagan, like, as
- 39:19we call it as a title, as a name, right?
- 39:21Oh, we were pagans or not really, but it just like, has
- 39:25connotations or undertones of paganism and some of those kind
- 39:29of Legacy maybe inherent thing. Things that it did any of that
- 39:33exist for you that you would call it as such now back then.
- 39:37I was thinking about that I want out running earlier and I was
- 39:41just running around in the woods.
- 39:43I have this place, there's a few of them around here.
- 39:45So I live in South Knoxville and there's this little place around
- 39:48here called the urban Wilderness, and it's this set of
- 39:53trails that the city had made to try to woo, all these West Coast
- 39:57bicycle Riders out here and try to get them too.
- 40:01Unquote. Right?
- 40:02Outside the sabre area neighborhood, whatever.
- 40:06I like the green way around here, man.
- 40:08I don't remember like, Murfreesboro the Stone River,
- 40:10Greenway, and all that. Yeah, stuff like that.
- 40:13Yeah, all these trails, and whatever.
- 40:17All this horseshit out here, all over the place now, but I like
- 40:19to go running out there and there's one spot in particular,
- 40:22where the pills are pretty. Pretty brutal.
- 40:25I call it the sacrificial Hill and it's just like, I'm a
- 40:31fucking second. If I said, you know, I was out
- 40:36there running around and I was thinking about this and I was
- 40:38like, man you know, I've had these ideas before and Emma.
- 40:42I mean to be honest, like you know, if I had ever dared to
- 40:47call my folks for my grandparents or reading about it
- 40:51in my bloodline Pagan that I bet they would, they would be.
- 40:55Yeah, right. Go completely nuts.
- 40:58But I have noticed and I've always known That my father,
- 41:05whose blood is absolutely Germanic.
- 41:10That's German. But also Scottish British and
- 41:15all that. No all no Nordic, but like
- 41:22German and mainland's Romania. The Saxony type, maybe Frisian
- 41:27as those in the main lobby. I would say.
- 41:30Exactly. Yeah.
- 41:32Because include parts of, you know, Eastern, Scotland, Eastern
- 41:35England or whatever. Yeah, he died has always been
- 41:42like a out Avid Outdoors person. We never to this day talked
- 41:49about why, but I can only assume being, you know, but turned 40
- 41:53and I know what it means for a man to spend a lot of time alone
- 41:56in the woods at this point, you know what I mean?
- 41:58Like, there's there's more than just the sport.
- 42:02Element. And I mean, I'm talking about
- 42:06the guy was gone. Survival camping and fishing in
- 42:13Montana, like 20 before I started playing guitar.
- 42:16I started playing guitar 25 years ago, this past Christmas.
- 42:19So we're talking about a long time that he was doing back.
- 42:24Helicopter, backpack drops into remote Alaskan islands, like
- 42:31Siri makes like documentaries about this stuff now and he was
- 42:34just doing it casually. Just he did a so long, they
- 42:37find. I started asking him to guide
- 42:40and now, hello Anna. And he's guiding out there.
- 42:43So so there's there's his side. And then, on Mom's side.
- 42:53They, my grandparents lived in the woods, you couldn't see the
- 42:57neighbors houses, and there was definitely a understated
- 43:04reverence for nature as a unspoken living entity.
- 43:10I can I can recall G saying that it was I can't quote her because
- 43:19we're talking about a long time ago now.
- 43:21But just that it was That it bothered her that they would
- 43:28tear down huge sections of the forest to put in like really
- 43:35what we now call like mcmansions and sub developments and all
- 43:38that this is when all that that corporate looking Ultra, generic
- 43:45pre-planned neighborhood, horseshit that you know, is
- 43:49very, very modern. They didn't grow up with that,
- 43:53you know what I mean? Like where where they grew up in
- 43:56the town that they were from still to this day.
- 44:00If you were to drive through at all the houses or 100 years ago,
- 44:03they haven't modernized anything.
- 44:04It's just, that's just how they live and also Homestead living,
- 44:08you know, well, that's subdivisions, they weren't
- 44:10homesteaders. But they were, they were like,
- 44:13from from, like they were both pure-blooded like she was Slavic
- 44:20her and her, my Grandma's Grandma.
- 44:25And grandfather came over here as they were Slavs and they
- 44:31Slovak. Sorry, there's a lockean and
- 44:37then their kids met at the Slovak dance hall and their
- 44:43Town. Wow, those kids were pure
- 44:47Slovak. That's my great-grandparents.
- 44:50So my grandmother was second generation American, but still
- 44:57Deeply rooted in those and cooked that way, get off my life
- 45:04and my mom grew up eating that kind of food and hearing those
- 45:07stories that to whatever extent, I don't really know.
- 45:10But and my grandfather's was the same but French, and that's this
- 45:16is Mom's side. So I just feel like I would call
- 45:21it Pagan, but they had a, I think that would be a stretch
- 45:26and Yeah. Yeah.
- 45:27But too much, romantic slow. They had a definitively old
- 45:32world. Yes.
- 45:34Not American sort of attitude towards like they didn't see it
- 45:39in any way that I would call as being this.
- 45:45Like, this is here for me, and I'm going to just trash it and
- 45:52do whatever I want with it. They lived in a wooded place,
- 45:56they kept all the woods. They were very like deliberate
- 45:59about keeping all the trees and making it so that the place kind
- 46:03of in a lot of ways like felt almost like a sanctuary.
- 46:07Yeah, it was very calm, very preserving the natural beauty
- 46:11and the natural integrity and respect thing.
- 46:15Yeah, like, they didn't take very many trees down, like he
- 46:18cut the driveway out himself, he paved, and they lived on the
- 46:21side of the hill to. So, it was like a pretty serious
- 46:23job. Yeah.
- 46:26And and, and they, you know, they always had a lot of wild
- 46:31animals in the property and never mess with them or anything
- 46:34like that including bears and like sometimes.
- 46:36Yeah. But Caribou, who knows?
- 46:39I mean, it's Montana, right. I mean, know that squatches are
- 46:43aware I didn't grow up in Montana.
- 46:45I actually grew up in New Jersey.
- 46:47Wow. Okay, well, I'm from New York.
- 46:49You know, there's some pretty crazy places in Jersey and New
- 46:52York to, you know, this is yeah, this was an intruder in New
- 46:55Jersey and Van Winkle baby. Lower cat, the Catskills.
- 46:58You know what I'm saying? Actually, no.
- 47:02I mean also, I'll stomping grounds, dude, Catskills and all
- 47:05that. Yeah.
- 47:06I was going to touch on that too, because I do feel like the
- 47:10northern people have a kind of more what I would.
- 47:14Like I said, a more direct route to anything Pagan ish because in
- 47:20the South here, the Christianity is is very strong and I and it's
- 47:26arguably the last Christian Nation.
- 47:29If you will on the planet. Yeah, in 2000, even look at how
- 47:36the indigenous people were forced by the Invaders.
- 47:40By, you know, the white European Invaders to to change their life
- 47:45and forcibly in violently and tragically.
- 47:48So like it's a travesty and it's absolutely horrible to talk
- 47:51about it and think about it, that was a thing.
- 47:53But like when we talk about things that are pagan Rite, or I
- 47:58say things that are pagan, I mean, it's old-world stuff and
- 48:00it's in it's stuff that exists in so many different cultures
- 48:04around the world. But North America, the United
- 48:08States being as young as as it is.
- 48:11And as we are and being kind of just the Yves of cultures.
- 48:15It's such a, I mean, maybe I'm using words that are a bit
- 48:19harsh, right? Because it is, it's a Melting
- 48:21Pot of cultures. There's immigrants this, that's
- 48:24literally what this nation was built on, was a nation of
- 48:27immigrants. You know what I'm saying?
- 48:29So, you got so many different influences that that are in.
- 48:33You know, the, the, the, the Northeast is very heavily
- 48:37Germanic, right? There's a lot of Dutch and
- 48:41German settlements and stuff over here.
- 48:43And you got all kinds of, you know, and it transitions
- 48:46different places, different areas.
- 48:47There's a lot of Scottish Celtic influence down here in the
- 48:50South. You know what I'm saying?
- 48:53Just kind of where people ended up at the time, but I think
- 48:57maybe like what I was looking at is like, even though it what
- 49:00they weren't necessarily paid because my family is not paying
- 49:02at all and they effectively excommunicated me from a lot of
- 49:09their, their lives because of it, but I grew up in such a way
- 49:13that, you know, Our circles were small, we took care of each
- 49:17other. We farmed, we husband cattle, we
- 49:20had people that raised, you know, chickens and and and and
- 49:24all kinds of things that, you know, when you look back on
- 49:26like, wow, that's some really old way stuff, you know, but not
- 49:29Pagan, but it's what pagans did. It's it's how you had to
- 49:33survive, man. Like it's, you didn't have a
- 49:34store that you could go to, man. If you wanted something to eat
- 49:37you how to grow it, or kill it or hunt for it or fish for it,
- 49:41right? Like that was just life.
- 49:43And if If you wanted to stay warm, you had to cut wood, you
- 49:46know, to heat your to heat your home with and stuff.
- 49:50So like a lot of those things that are for maybe a lot of
- 49:54people in this time in this day and time seemed a bit.
- 49:57So, it's old ways. And like, man, this is just how
- 49:59you live. This is how you, how to survive
- 50:01it. Take the religion out of it.
- 50:04Yeah, you just had to survive, you know, still like that, for
- 50:09at least half the human population.
- 50:11Anyway, Right anywhere. Right?
- 50:16The I didn't I mean it's I mean look because everything she if
- 50:19she gets the fan could go back to that and write tomorrow, if
- 50:25they turn the power off. Oh, for sure, I mean, I don't
- 50:28know if you were here, what was it?
- 50:30Like, maybe it was less than a year ago when that, that RV
- 50:35explosion downtown in Nashville, I been here.
- 50:39But yeah, it took out infrastructure.
- 50:43That affected like emergency responders like you couldn't
- 50:47dial 911 and call for help for anything.
- 50:49And I'm like up. Here we go.
- 50:51Here's where it starts. And all it took was one old
- 50:55Winnebago from like the 80s to do it and that and, you know,
- 50:59nobody even planned it that way. But I'm like, see that's that's
- 51:02a message right there. That sends a message and maybe
- 51:04that's me being a bit stretching.
- 51:07Things with my crazy conspiracy theory mind, which I don't try
- 51:10to satisfy too much, but the signs are there And can you not
- 51:15like, don't ignore it. Like if that's all it took to
- 51:19create that much pandemonium, for that short period of time.
- 51:22Like, if you really wanted to plan something, it ain't that
- 51:25hard anything where you going to be when it happens?
- 51:30How are you going to be able to pick up from where you are right
- 51:33now? And and regardless again of the
- 51:34religious aspect of it's when you call yourself Christian
- 51:37Pagan Muslim, whatever its survival.
- 51:40Yeah. That point it goes and it goes
- 51:42past. Who you call your God.
- 51:47Sure. You know it's like touching back
- 51:50on some of those things that we were mentioning earlier about
- 51:52our Mystic experiences. Right?
- 51:54Our existence our shared existence in the world around us
- 51:57man. There was there was things that
- 51:59I was experiencing dude. That at that time, the gods
- 52:02weren't even a hindsight for me, it was like, I'm Tom.
- 52:06I'm dealing with things that are bigger than the gods here,
- 52:09primordial thing, right? Things that are older than even
- 52:13the gods themselves, right? You know, like the very essence
- 52:16is of universe exists like the life at the universe knows like
- 52:20the dark, the light the ice, the fire knows Essences of things
- 52:25that are have been there and that's why we're here.
- 52:28And whatever mythology, whatever, lure, whatever
- 52:32creation myth, whatever thing you want to put to it.
- 52:35Well, I was gonna tell you to stay on that you know one of the
- 52:41one of the And so there's primeval well there's that that
- 52:45one has a definitive to me the lyrics really don't even get it
- 52:51very much. But to be honest I also can't
- 52:54even remember what they are because I there's just so much
- 52:57other crap in my head since then.
- 52:59But The other two that I put out started last year, one being
- 53:08violent. And the other one is Arcane
- 53:10marrow, Arcane marrow. If you can guess by the name is
- 53:15also like explicitly Pagan or whatever.
- 53:20I mean, I say Pagan, I still use the term Peg.
- 53:23I don't really sure. Yeah, it's just for me, I'm not.
- 53:30someone like I took the idea of polytheism very literally and
- 53:35just kind of feel like I'm not gonna.
- 53:43If I feel an Impulse to explore the Greek pantheon, I'm not
- 53:46going to deny it just because my dad's blood is German or
- 53:49something or whatever. If I want to go to the Badlands
- 53:51and learn about the great spirit, thought through the
- 53:54perspective of the Lakota people that I'm going to like, I'm
- 53:57alive, I'm here, it's America. It's everything you described
- 54:01already. So I'm going to grab what I can
- 54:03out of it and let my own intuition lead.
- 54:11From one thing to the next though, though.
- 54:14I will say, I tend to come back to this thing about Odin over
- 54:18and over again. And I don't even want to, it's
- 54:21just happens. But that actually leads me on a
- 54:25side, note to this other thing, I meant to bring up about Carl
- 54:30Jung and his home that he started Living in.
- 54:35Like, in the I guessed when he was about 40 years old, and he
- 54:38had already become fairly famous and successful.
- 54:41Restful and all that. And he he bought this house
- 54:44built. I think he built it himself
- 54:45actually. And I was, you know, somewhat
- 54:47remote location out in the Swiss mountains and he was a stone
- 54:52Carver. That was like his hobby, you
- 54:54know. He was like a really big dude.
- 54:56He was like, you know, my size like 62 and maybe taller and was
- 55:01pretty muscular and whatever his hobby was Stone carving.
- 55:07So he carved Out of the stone that he used.
- 55:14As I want to say as the Cornerstone but it could have
- 55:19been some other thing somewhere. It was like it was like
- 55:22prominently placed. That's all I remember from the
- 55:25story Mega in any case, it says what he carved into it, says,
- 55:30invoked or not. The god.
- 55:36We'll call meaning. Whether you want them to or not,
- 55:42he's coming. Yeah, you don't this idea about
- 55:48that. I think that pagan people
- 55:53polytheistic people, Heathen people.
- 55:58About Conjuring, calling invoking.
- 56:01I think that's part of it and I think that's an aspect of
- 56:05religious practice. That, you know, kind of goes
- 56:10into the, like the ritual, ritual category, right?
- 56:14And it's something where it's us going out to them, right?
- 56:20But there's the other one. There's the other side where
- 56:23they just grabbed you by the head and say now is the time
- 56:25motherfucker and like, you know, horse shake the rat or shake and
- 56:30rattle the bars as it were right.
- 56:33Yes. So me and let me out wake up
- 56:36something, right? So like with That being said,
- 56:38when, when we started, toying around with vile hanging, which
- 56:43was really just like me having, you know, anxiety.
- 56:47And I can't sit still, and I just like need to do something
- 56:49in between the Primeval. Well, albums.
- 56:52It was like right after the first one.
- 56:54I started writing right after the first primeval well album
- 56:57and it came out like a month later.
- 57:00I had already written a lot of what we came while he ain't hit
- 57:04that time though, there was a whole other set of riffs and it
- 57:07was all just going to be the one thing I realized.
- 57:09Well I have this one set of riffs there like a third feel
- 57:16like traditional is just a shitty stupid word.
- 57:19At least as a, how it relates to my music because it's usually
- 57:24anything, but but this was the closest thing.
- 57:29It wasn't like super crazy super dissonant like it wasn't overly
- 57:35experimental put it that way, right?
- 57:37It was riffs that A person that was just in a black metal
- 57:40because they like black metal. They could just listen to it.
- 57:42Like, it's Black mobile, right? They wouldn't have to go.
- 57:45What the fuck is this? You know, and like, give it 16
- 57:49different words to describe. It's like, it's, it's black
- 57:52metal. So That being said I got, you
- 57:58know a third of the way into recording the guitar parts to
- 58:03that album in a sick man. That's like I just feel like
- 58:07it's like this music is like a very pathetic.
- 58:11I hadn't even gotten that far. Still writing it.
- 58:13I was still I was here in Knoxville.
- 58:16I was writing and I had had After the Badlands thing a
- 58:25number of other. Similarly induced, similarly,
- 58:29ending experiences, mostly here up in the mountains.
- 58:34I usually go to a place up in Cocke County.
- 58:38I have this Camp there. I just go to all the time.
- 58:40You'd love it, actually, man. This is what I was talking about
- 58:43being long-winded. I promise you.
- 58:45I'm going to get to the point but hey, yeah, I'm enjoying the
- 58:47journey. There's this camp that I found
- 58:50is that in the middle of nowhere.
- 58:51Are right. You got to drive all through the
- 58:54mountains unpaved roads to get there, you come up to this big
- 58:59hill and you look down and out of a Confluence between two
- 59:03mountain Rivers, sits a camp and it forms a circle and it's lined
- 59:09with trees in a circle, right? And then when you you have to
- 59:12drive across through one of those rivers and you pull up
- 59:15into a park then you go walk to the back end of it, you realize
- 59:19there's a whole other literal stream.
- 59:21His tree growth. All right, first there's a
- 59:24circle then there's like an actual growth of oak trees and
- 59:28it's natural. It's not planted there, unevenly
- 59:31placed. But I mean it's spooky.
- 59:34I said that they're tripping balls and realized that the moon
- 59:38was going to Full Moon was going to come straight up over it and
- 59:42like, right. Like to give me this crap up.
- 59:46Yeah. Oh that kind of thing.
- 59:49Is what you really animates. Not just by me the well, but
- 59:54specifically Arcane marrow. And some of I'll hang.
- 59:59And when I was finishing up all the writing, I just really felt
- 1:00:03like for Arcane marrow and like each song Almost felt like.
- 1:00:07So for example the first song on that album really just for me it
- 1:00:12had this warlike energy and feeling that I could only it
- 1:00:20felt an alien to me like I had like I said this kind of Odin
- 1:00:25experiences before, right? And I kind of felt like I sort
- 1:00:28of got to know him a little if you will.
- 1:00:31Yeah. But this other was, it was
- 1:00:34different and but similarly intense and very violent but a
- 1:00:38different kind of thing. And it reminded me almost of the
- 1:00:42bhagavad-gita where it was like this very like, Intense.
- 1:00:51Glorious religious War sort of feeling.
- 1:00:56But for some reason it didn't sound like the music definitely
- 1:01:04isn't like inspired by Indian music or anything, but it just
- 1:01:09so I could only conclude that it was like this thing where I this
- 1:01:15may sound really silly but I just felt like it was Thor.
- 1:01:18Looks like channeling that because I personally from the
- 1:01:23get-go with all this Polytheistic Pagan, whatever.
- 1:01:29Always right from the jump, had this thing about Odin vote on
- 1:01:36and the very weird and mysterious nature and dark and
- 1:01:45like at times pretty disturbing trickiness that he's mad, he's
- 1:01:52absolutely mad and that's one of the key.
- 1:01:54Innings for you know in the many the many names that he's known
- 1:01:58by. I mean he's a mad man.
- 1:02:00He's yeah, there's Madness connected.
- 1:02:03Absolutely yeah. That that Ecstasy of Madness.
- 1:02:08Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:02:10I felt like in a lot of ways I had kind of started to put my
- 1:02:16clothes in a little bit, with primeval this thing though, with
- 1:02:20Arcane marrow is different, it just like had a very, I could
- 1:02:23only describe it. To Zach.
- 1:02:25The kid that plays plays drums and helps me record, those
- 1:02:28albums. He's in primeval.
- 1:02:32Well, I was like, man, it's just like it's store.
- 1:02:34It's got to be. There's no other way.
- 1:02:36It can't be anything else. It's, and in thinking about that
- 1:02:40would just make more risk, more imagery, come out of my mind.
- 1:02:43And and so that, that could that music that album is like all
- 1:02:49just completely it's almost like, Like the mystical shamanic
- 1:03:02experience or whatever translated it self for me, in my
- 1:03:08own mind into sound. So that it would get expressed.
- 1:03:13Yeah, does does he because I didn't really try to like, do
- 1:03:19that, I didn't want. I never, I never liked have set
- 1:03:21down and said I'm going to start playing Nordic ambient fucking
- 1:03:24guitar loops. All right.
- 1:03:25It was nothing like I said, we're not a just organically
- 1:03:28kind of like and I didn't. So pettway didn't do this in
- 1:03:31some kind of like mushroomed, you know, ritual either I'm
- 1:03:35talking about just sitting and in my little music room here and
- 1:03:38it's just like, just having this like, full-blown experience that
- 1:03:43translated into a, you know, yet another 10 but does Arcane
- 1:03:48marrow and was it vile hate or vile Haines?
- 1:03:51Hey, hey, hey, I'll paint it, is it?
- 1:03:55Is there stuff out here? Because I mean when people are
- 1:03:57listening and watching this, so whatever they want to, is it
- 1:04:01absorbable anywhere? Can they download it?
- 1:04:03Can they listen to it? Yes, all that stuff is on the
- 1:04:06moon light sobers archetypes band camp and they can also look
- 1:04:10for those bands themselves. They're also I have social media
- 1:04:13Pages problem too. So yeah, we're definitely going
- 1:04:16to link the Moonlight Cypress. Archetypes band camp in the show
- 1:04:21notes and in the description. So you know everybody listen and
- 1:04:23watching whatever if any of this sounds like something that you
- 1:04:27want to, you know sink your teeth into and explore, check
- 1:04:32out all of that. Because if it's if it's on that
- 1:04:35band camp and then that'll be kind of like your One Stop Shop
- 1:04:38for it. Yeah.
- 1:04:39But Arcane marrow primeval. Well, yeah, there's a bunch of
- 1:04:45them. Yeah, I mean like you're a busy
- 1:04:47guy and that's what I was saying before.
- 1:04:48Like before he ever came out of like, he's got his hands in so
- 1:04:50many different things, and I even think that your, your label
- 1:04:53is responsible for stuff, that's not even your own right.
- 1:04:56There's, there's what is it? Is it pie, fire?
- 1:05:01Yeah, we just released fire. That was the first one that
- 1:05:04Devil's Looking Glass. I mean, that's me.
- 1:05:07That's you too, right? You probably actually really
- 1:05:09like that stuff to. That's like that's another one
- 1:05:13that one was there. All on the label right there.
- 1:05:15All on the yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:18There's actually a song called woden's tog on there.
- 1:05:21That was just like I just again set out in the fucking back yard
- 1:05:26full moon, you know, having a campfire I believe it was
- 1:05:31September of 2020 and I've been what a year huh man?
- 1:05:36Yeah. Well, a little topic point of
- 1:05:41discussion that I was going to mention.
- 1:05:43This is that my girlfriend is really.
- 1:05:45And to this somewhat newly developing field called
- 1:05:51archetypal astrology, which is a further development on what they
- 1:05:56call. Archetypal psychology, which is
- 1:06:01a the next Link in the chain. After Young's.
- 1:06:07Yeah. Wow.
- 1:06:10So yeah. So this dude named James Hillman
- 1:06:14created what they call archetypal psychology, which is
- 1:06:19deceptively named in a certain sense, because he really kind of
- 1:06:23in a lot of ways distanced himself from you and the
- 1:06:26archetypes, it's a little bit. He he actually said, stop
- 1:06:31calling it that because you need to just call it polytheistic
- 1:06:34psychology that from their people.
- 1:06:39Took. a lot of that mentality and created what's now Loosely
- 1:06:45called archetypal astrology and some of the astrologers had
- 1:06:51pointed out that 2020 had the same solar events as If I'm not
- 1:07:01mistaken 1776 which, you know, every American would that would
- 1:07:06probably three pivotal I would say.
- 1:07:08Yeah, right. So yes.
- 1:07:11So like every month in 2020 stuff like that was happening
- 1:07:18where these songs that were Unintentionally, but, but by the
- 1:07:24end of them, kind of being sketched out, very obviously,
- 1:07:27having these Heathen connotations.
- 1:07:34And, and for me, I just a Vibe, a feeling like a feeling like,
- 1:07:39It's not so much like these three rooms or this passage from
- 1:07:47the have a mall or whatever. It's produce this effect.
- 1:07:52It's more like the sound was creating itself, using a certain
- 1:08:00several few tunings on the guitar, the banjo or whatever
- 1:08:03stuff that's like kind of common actually like Like in Celtic
- 1:08:08music but also an old-time Mountain Music, just like a
- 1:08:17music theory, person would call it model and it has a very
- 1:08:22specific meaning. There's no It's an interesting
- 1:08:28development. I was like, really completely
- 1:08:30obsessed or John Coltrane when I was a kid and he was famous for
- 1:08:35among other things like what they called modal Jazz.
- 1:08:38And so his among many other contributions, one of them was
- 1:08:43the observation that falls almost more in line with like
- 1:08:47comparative musicology. Which is the music of the world.
- 1:08:54Everywhere is based on modal scales.
- 1:08:58It's only the only place and time where there's been very
- 1:09:04distinct chord progressions. Going from one thing to the next
- 1:09:07has come out of Western Europe in harmony, which is a
- 1:09:10relatively modern, iteration of music that is sits completely
- 1:09:19and totally within In the Christian monastic era starting,
- 1:09:22like roughly seven to eight hundred years ago about the end
- 1:09:25of the Viking era, when things really changed?
- 1:09:28Yeah, in Europe. Now, the significance of that is
- 1:09:33the fact that that music all around the world registers, for
- 1:09:37whatever reason in people's bodies when they hear it
- 1:09:41registers as immediately registers as religious music.
- 1:09:46Yep, across the globe. Yeah, that's like in any
- 1:09:49culture. Like whether it's in Asia North
- 1:09:53or South Asia and African music and South American music.
- 1:09:58And from what we know of Native American music here, it's like
- 1:10:04this set of scales that really invokes a sense of earth
- 1:10:14religion or blood religion or ancient religion or whatever
- 1:10:18this and it's a mysterious Thing people really all seem to react
- 1:10:25kind of the same way but you know, it's not really very
- 1:10:29present and country music but it is an old-time out of Music.
- 1:10:33I've also found that it's really common in bands, like probably
- 1:10:37going to botch the pronunciation and but one of one of my
- 1:10:41favorites, one of the ones that really got me into black metal.
- 1:10:43This Blood asked Nord, right? And you're familiar with them.
- 1:10:48They have a very droning, a very mode.
- 1:10:50Little black metal kind of sound, and I feel like, pulling
- 1:10:55all that stuff together, something about all these
- 1:10:58different pieces. Finally, clicked for me
- 1:11:03personally in 2020 and every fucking one of those full moons,
- 1:11:08something like that happened where it was just like this song
- 1:11:12with this, like, weird random modal guitar.
- 1:11:14Tuning would just like present itself.
- 1:11:17I couldn't get out of my head and I go sit down have a fire
- 1:11:20outside. There's a man, here comes like,
- 1:11:23six verses of all these lyrics about Odin.
- 1:11:27I don't fucking write lyrics, man.
- 1:11:28I don't care about them. Yeah.
- 1:11:31Like, I'm not a country songwriter, dude.
- 1:11:34You know, I'm like a guitar player and I got forced into
- 1:11:37this because no one else would sing for me and, and I didn't
- 1:11:41belong. Bard, man, you're that mountain
- 1:11:43Bard. I guess you could say, well,
- 1:11:45that's what I'm saying, you know, going back to that
- 1:11:47previous Division if you want to call it that, Of Odin saying
- 1:11:51that me out. Yeah, dude, I didn't want you in
- 1:11:54there for me either, but it's like I did.
- 1:12:00I wouldn't have asked for this. Yeah.
- 1:12:03If you're doing it man, like you're you're making it work and
- 1:12:06your yeah, I guess you're in a way it's like answering a call,
- 1:12:11you know, like I didn't I didn't give you my number but I'm going
- 1:12:16to answer you because you're calling me and then figure out
- 1:12:18what the hell's going on. Like, what's With this.
- 1:12:21And I mean, shoot like we could probably literally go on with
- 1:12:27this stuff forever about because look at where it started.
- 1:12:32I mean, we started talking about just it was the music and then
- 1:12:35it was the mushrooms and then it's the mythology.
- 1:12:37And now it's back to the music and it's coming.
- 1:12:40We could literally go for, I think, hours on something like
- 1:12:43this. And if you're willing, I would
- 1:12:44love to have you back and explore.
- 1:12:46Some of these other intricacies of things because I feel like
- 1:12:49this is a very insightful and very interesting to see what
- 1:12:52because I love what you're talking about with how the music
- 1:12:55touches people, regardless of the culture regardless of the
- 1:12:58version and I didn't realize that it was because of the the
- 1:13:03the notes or or SARS or the how it was you know just it touches
- 1:13:07you in a certain way and it does I mean I mean it's can argue
- 1:13:11that there's this classical composer from Canada and I watch
- 1:13:16his YouTube videos all the time and it's A lot of what he talks
- 1:13:21about his musical psychology and a musical psychologist for first
- 1:13:26of all, there's no such thing work on paper but it's the idea
- 1:13:29that the composer should have a sense of the psychological
- 1:13:35effect that his music is going to have on other people because
- 1:13:38if you're writing and you don't know, it's like saying words
- 1:13:42that you don't know what order to put them at.
- 1:13:43You might know the words but like you may not be a very good
- 1:13:46sentence Constructor, right? Right words.
- 1:13:50Your grammar is off but, you know, the vocabulary, your your
- 1:13:54message is just like unclear, right?
- 1:13:57Yeah. Oh, he talks about musical
- 1:14:00psychology and it's something that I had been thinking on
- 1:14:03already and it's like creating an element of mystery but not
- 1:14:09mystery in the like unbelievably cheesy worn-out black metal
- 1:14:14trihard bullshit way the like trying to like me this you know,
- 1:14:20Entity online and like be mysterious or whatever like
- 1:14:24that, shit's pretty tired, but it's more like mystery.
- 1:14:28Like, what is mystery? Mystery is like the core of all
- 1:14:33of this. Really is the core of religion.
- 1:14:36And the, I mean, to the point where they used to call them
- 1:14:39mystery, religions, like all their, you know, the again, the
- 1:14:42Greeks practiced mystery religions, the Romans practiced
- 1:14:47mr. Egyptians like the Colts of this
- 1:14:50God or that God or whatever practiced what we now call
- 1:14:54mystery religions and it's just my opinion and I I don't think
- 1:15:02I'm the only one who thinks this but it's just that the modal
- 1:15:05flavor Fast tracks that in the not just the mind, but literally
- 1:15:14in the physiology of a person's ears, which I realize that's a
- 1:15:18kind of a mouthful and a handful to like chew on, but it's like
- 1:15:21people are not used to hearing music, that's constructed that
- 1:15:26way anymore. And there's something about it
- 1:15:29that resonates in the body itself.
- 1:15:33Yeah. Way.
- 1:15:34Which is why when people listen to A Love Supreme by John
- 1:15:38Coltrane, they always talk about it as being, you know, a
- 1:15:45religious experience. Which is exactly what he fucking
- 1:15:48meant it to be. He knew exactly what he was
- 1:15:51doing with it. Well, I'll even look at you, I
- 1:15:54mean, and it may be cliche, but like, I mean, just because I'm
- 1:15:57not, I'm not a musical Aficionado by any means, but
- 1:16:01when you look at composers, like Beethoven who was deaf, he
- 1:16:04couldn't hear anything. But the music that here, Wrote
- 1:16:07the vibrations, the feeling how it speaks to the human psyche,
- 1:16:11how it speaks to us as sentient beings, right?
- 1:16:16It's a construct of vibrations. It's a contract of things that
- 1:16:19you may, you may be able to receive not just through your
- 1:16:22ear canals, but it may be going through that way, but the
- 1:16:24vibrations within their your eardrums like however, the all
- 1:16:27that shit works, you know it's resonating deeper than just.
- 1:16:31Oh, that sounds nice. Well, I like it goes way deeper
- 1:16:34than that. It's interesting with Beto.
- 1:16:37To because of him being German. And it, it, it fulfills any
- 1:16:48Stereotype of what German music and culture should feel like,
- 1:16:54like it's the most like chest-pounding hardcore.
- 1:16:58Stout. Yes, they would have had at that
- 1:17:01time. That would have like, you know,
- 1:17:03if it was metal, man, that it was right.
- 1:17:07That was their metal at the time, right?
- 1:17:10Right. It's so like true to the
- 1:17:14stereotypes of their National character.
- 1:17:17Whereas, You know, Ravel and Debussy, so they're so French.
- 1:17:23It's so obviously French. And then, you know, and like my
- 1:17:26my favorite guy Stravinsky which I think you saw my post that I
- 1:17:32made about this, this new band that I started called Sky thala
- 1:17:38which is yes reference to the, with all original ruin in the
- 1:17:42imagery of it. Yeah, there's all kinds of nods
- 1:17:44to it. Yeah.
- 1:17:45Oh that music is is based on On Stravinsky.
- 1:17:49It's like a took ideas from him and merged it with my own ideas
- 1:17:54about black metal and whatever. And, you know, he's of course
- 1:17:59Russian and that music has a very distinct National character
- 1:18:05to fix along with, you know, their their cultural Tendencies
- 1:18:10and so on so forth. But also, you know, that night
- 1:18:15for example, so like I didn't I didn't just like sit down and
- 1:18:19think like, what's the Q 2 is fucking way.
- 1:18:21I can incorporate a rune, into my logo.
- 1:18:23I didn't even want to, I was just walking around. and in my
- 1:18:26backyard about a year ago, And I looked up another big moon
- 1:18:32night. All right, like the I'm Tony the
- 1:18:34shit just follows me. It sounds like I've looked up
- 1:18:39and there was a bunch of chemtrails in the sky and I'm
- 1:18:44like, I have the picture, I took a fucking picture with it with
- 1:18:47my phone of it because I'm just like, Madness.
- 1:18:50Is this is you you all are messing with me again.
- 1:18:55And I mean like it distinctly forms the rune Like, you know,
- 1:19:00yeah, and it was, I don't know, it's like 1:00 or 2:00 in the
- 1:19:03morning or something. And I was like, man, this is
- 1:19:06this shit. Okay.
- 1:19:09Yeah, that old man in that head of yours, just let me out here.
- 1:19:12Yeah, I know. And it's like my work is that
- 1:19:17it's like so dystopian with the Chemtrails, like, you know,
- 1:19:21talking about conspiracy theories or whatever, like
- 1:19:24Chemtrails is obviously. You know great father for
- 1:19:29conspiracy talk and the what's that man?
- 1:19:32What is the chances of that they would have just formed that
- 1:19:35shape and you know like it just seemed so ancient.
- 1:19:41And so dystopian at the same time that I was just like, okay
- 1:19:46well there's a name for that band.
- 1:19:49Yeah, I was going to tell you to that.
- 1:19:53Another thing that I've noticed is that every Every time that I
- 1:19:57feel the urge to go get lost up in the mountains, it's always a
- 1:20:03Wednesday. Okay.
- 1:20:06Well, I think we know then that the, the Odin wotan hold on,
- 1:20:14world knows, I mean, yeah, that, that, that element is is alive
- 1:20:18and well, I guess, within for you, because it's for sure and
- 1:20:26the fact that You know I mean I think I alluded to it early on
- 1:20:29as we wrap things up, like I alluded early on like you got a
- 1:20:33room set? Yeah, I had made one of my
- 1:20:37probably, I would say, I don't know.
- 1:20:39I because I don't keep track of how many I make or whatever, but
- 1:20:42I mean that was an event that you came to the Nashville Pagan
- 1:20:46pride of N and and and and purchased a rune set that day
- 1:20:51and you know, the the the we don't talk a whole lot.
- 1:20:55At least, we haven't up to this point in that.
- 1:20:56Message that I got from you. The other day.
- 1:20:58I was like, man, that was so touching to know that.
- 1:21:01Cuz, you know, quite often I make these things and they and
- 1:21:04they go to their homes, right? They go to the people who I make
- 1:21:06them for and I don't know nothing about him after that.
- 1:21:08And that's okay, I don't need to but to know that they are
- 1:21:15working with and for you and that you work with them and they
- 1:21:19have a living part of your life, like it was, it was touching.
- 1:21:23It was it meant a lot to know that and The runes and Odin.
- 1:21:28I mean if you know the Lord and the mythology behind, you know,
- 1:21:31hanging from yggdrasil and taking up the runes and nine
- 1:21:33days and nights on the tree, it's like it's all the pieces
- 1:21:37are coming together and it's pretty, it's pretty.
- 1:21:44It's really kind of mind-boggling.
- 1:21:50They just being the one on the other end of it.
- 1:21:51All, you know, I mean you're the guy doing the thing and I'm just
- 1:21:54the guy that made the Rune set that you that You fortuitously
- 1:21:57Came Upon and picked that day, you know.
- 1:22:00So it's all really neat. How the threads have been come
- 1:22:04into woven as it were through things.
- 1:22:08And so you know, with with that being said, you know, I think
- 1:22:12we're at a good spot to The call this one up or call this one at
- 1:22:17a stopping point. It's we've covered a lot of
- 1:22:20bases and that's what I love about what I can do here with
