- 0:12Speaker 2: that it's done. Now, So you listen to the album

- 0:19Speaker 2: songs or all of them.

- 0:24Speaker 4: Hi, this is Sarah Harrelson, your host of Taking a

- 0:44Speaker 4: won't quit, this multi platinum singer songwriter is forever looking
- 0:48Speaker 4: forward with his newest and tenth studio album, I Didn't
- 0:53Speaker 4: Come Here to Leave That released on October seventeenth. This
- 0:57Speaker 4: album release date also coincides with another special milestone, this
- 1:03Speaker 4: Grammy nominated vocalist eighth anniversary of his induction into the
- 1:08Speaker 4: Grand Ole Opry.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Taking a Walk Nashville.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Hi, Chris, thank you so much for being on Taking
- 1:17Speaker 4: a walk Nashville today. How are you.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm doing well. How are you?
- 1:21Speaker 4: I'm good? Thank you so much for being here. Let's
- 1:24Speaker 4: talk about your latest and tenth studio album, I Didn't
- 1:28Speaker 4: come here to leave. It was just released on October seventeenth,
- 1:32Speaker 4: and this release date is pretty special because it coincides
- 1:36Speaker 4: with another milestone of yours, which is celebrating your eighth
- 1:41Speaker 4: anniversary of your induction into the grand Ole Opry. Congrats?
- 1:46Speaker 4: What does it mean to be celebrating eight years with
- 1:48Speaker 4: the Obrey?
- 1:50Speaker 3: I mean, it's incredible.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I can hardly believe that it's been that long that
- 1:56Speaker 2: I've been a member of that family, And incredibly grateful
- 2:00Speaker 2: that they asked me to join and asked.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Me to join Black River for this album.
- 2:06Speaker 2: I mean, all of those things coinciding I couldn't have
- 2:09Speaker 2: I don't think actively planned.
- 2:11Speaker 3: It just sort of fell that way. So it was
- 2:14Speaker 3: really cool.
- 2:16Speaker 4: Yeah, And this year we're celebrating one hundred years of
- 2:18Speaker 4: the Opry? Do you have a favorite Grand Ole Opry moment?
- 2:25Speaker 2: Me realizing that I'd picked up vince Gil because he
- 2:27Speaker 2: asked me to join as a member of the grand
- 2:29Speaker 2: Ole Opry, and I had him like up in the air,
- 2:32Speaker 2: and I'm like, I should probably put him down. He's
- 2:37Speaker 2: a Hall of Famer. I probably shouldn't be just like
- 2:39Speaker 2: grabbing people and picking him up.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Well, I'm sure it's a special and emotional moment for you,
- 2:45Speaker 4: So I understand that, and congrats again, Chris. I want
- 2:49Speaker 4: to talk more about your new album. There's a lot
- 2:52Speaker 4: of fun anthem songs on it like Pour Some Whiskey
- 2:55Speaker 4: on it and more heartfelt songs like I Hope It's Okay,
- 2:59Speaker 4: and your debut release on your new label, Black River Entertainment,
- 3:04Speaker 4: Till the Last One Dies is out and you co
- 3:08Speaker 4: produced this song with Andy Sheridan. What was it like
- 3:11Speaker 4: going through the production process of this song? What was
- 3:14Speaker 4: your vision for it?
- 3:17Speaker 5: Yeah, I would see you would have to ask him
- 3:19Speaker 5: and me at the same time, since I did co
- 3:21Speaker 5: produce this, like, I took all my gear down for
- 3:26Speaker 5: any of the studio nerds out there, my Box two
- 3:29Speaker 5: fifty one, my ten seventy three Vintage, and my COO
- 3:32Speaker 5: and B and recorded.
- 3:33Speaker 2: In his home studio all the vocals for this. We
- 3:36Speaker 2: used the same band the entire time. I was so
- 3:40Speaker 2: grateful for those guys for doing all of the sessions
- 3:43Speaker 2: and actually being able to have like one cohesive band,
- 3:46Speaker 2: because I haven't done that in a long time. Normally
- 3:49Speaker 2: it's sort of like piecemeal as you're going through the
- 3:54Speaker 2: process and making a record. It was really really cool
- 3:58Speaker 2: making this record with Andy. He's such a good dude.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Like at one point when we were doing the vocals,
- 4:04Speaker 2: I walked out of his house and his wife was
- 4:08Speaker 2: filming his kids and they were making an action movie.
- 4:13Speaker 3: In the in the front yard of their house.
- 4:15Speaker 2: So it was just a very much dig in make
- 4:21Speaker 2: the record we wanted to make, and we had the
- 4:23Speaker 2: time to do it.
- 4:25Speaker 3: So it was a lot of fun, and it is.
- 4:29Speaker 3: You can't say it's.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Oh, this is the best record I've ever made, It's
- 4:32Speaker 2: my favorite writer that I've ever made. That gets said
- 4:35Speaker 2: a lot, but I would say it is one of
- 4:39Speaker 2: my favorite things that I've ever done.
- 4:42Speaker 4: I'm sure each album that you record is a different
- 4:45Speaker 4: kind of process and each one is special in its
- 4:48Speaker 4: own way. And just listening through this album, there's other
- 4:53Speaker 4: deeply heartfelt songs on this like what would you take?
- 4:56Speaker 4: And just Keep Living? Can you tell us what this
- 5:00Speaker 4: so just keep living means to you?
- 5:03Speaker 3: Just keep living?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Obviously it's about my dad, very very personal and very
- 5:08Speaker 2: meaningful to me. But I do think it's encapsulating of Hey,
- 5:14Speaker 2: even when things are bad, you know, you still got
- 5:17Speaker 2: to push through and see the beautiful things in life
- 5:24Speaker 2: and realize that we're all blessed.
- 5:28Speaker 3: So just keep living.
- 5:30Speaker 4: This song was definitely one of my favorites to listen
- 5:32Speaker 4: to you on the album and pulled up my heart strings.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Is there a particular song on the album you're most
- 5:39Speaker 4: excited for people to hear?
- 5:42Speaker 3: That's one of them, for sure. Obviously the title track.
- 5:46Speaker 2: I didn't come here to leave to pivot into something
- 5:48Speaker 2: that's more up tempo and fun and happy. You know,
- 5:52Speaker 2: it's just a big party song and a lot of fun.
- 5:56Speaker 2: And then I guess, since that song is about my
- 5:59Speaker 2: dad overcoming cancer, just keep living.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I made a song about my dad.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I had to make a song about my mom because
- 6:06Speaker 2: if I don't mention my dad and my mom, one
- 6:09Speaker 2: of them is going to be mad.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Which one's about your mom then.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Jesus Mama Country Radio, Oh of.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Course it has to be. I love it. So you've
- 6:21Speaker 4: been doing a lot of touring this summer, but I
- 6:24Speaker 4: think your fan should be excited because this winter you
- 6:27Speaker 4: are launching your first ever holiday tour. It must be
- 6:31Speaker 4: Christmas and Acoustic Evening with Chris Young with fifteen headlining
- 6:36Speaker 4: shows running November through December. So fans should definitely look
- 6:42Speaker 4: up on your website if you're in their area for
- 6:45Speaker 4: a special holiday concert. What does Christmas mean to you?
- 6:51Speaker 2: Christmas is one of my favorite times a year, hands down,
- 6:55Speaker 2: and I've never done a Christmas tour before. I've never
- 6:59Speaker 2: done that, and a lot of people have asked for it,
- 7:02Speaker 2: so I was like, Okay, here we go.
- 7:05Speaker 3: I guess this is what we're going to do this year.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And it's funny because I was supposed to be off
- 7:11Speaker 2: most of this year and then this new record label,
- 7:16Speaker 2: Black River Entertainment, stepped up. I took a bunch of
- 7:20Speaker 2: meetings with a bunch of people.
- 7:23Speaker 3: No I didn't.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I canceled all of them after I had the first
- 7:26Speaker 2: meeting with Black River. They are an incredible record label.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Just really felt comfortable with them and decided that's where
- 7:34Speaker 2: I wanted to be. I hit the ground running making
- 7:38Speaker 2: the album, and then I was like, let's do a
- 7:43Speaker 2: Christmas tour.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Let's do it. That'll be fun, It'll be some be
- 7:46Speaker 3: like a bowl on the end of my first year
- 7:49Speaker 3: with that label, so very.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Excited looking forward to those shows, and they're going to
- 7:54Speaker 2: be really cool.
- 7:56Speaker 4: We're excited that you're going to get everyone into the
- 7:59Speaker 4: holiday spirit. Do you have a favorite holiday song you
- 8:02Speaker 4: like to perform?
- 8:04Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 8:05Speaker 2: I would say, for my money, it's probably the Christmas
- 8:10Speaker 2: song the Chestnut.
- 8:12Speaker 3: It's real roasting on it.
- 8:14Speaker 2: I mean that to me, that song is just encapsulating
- 8:17Speaker 2: of the spirit of the season.
- 8:19Speaker 4: Yeah, is that one on your It Must Be Christmas album?
- 8:23Speaker 3: It is.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Let's talk about how you have been giving back to
- 8:28Speaker 4: the community since we are on taking a walk Nashville.
- 8:32Speaker 4: So you are a Middle Tennessee State University alum and
- 8:36Speaker 4: a few years ago you gave back to your alma
- 8:38Speaker 4: mater by funding and opening the Chris Young Cafe and
- 8:42Speaker 4: on campus teaching and performance venue for students, which is
- 8:46Speaker 4: so wonderful. And by doing this, what is your hope
- 8:50Speaker 4: for music students that use the space.
- 8:53Speaker 2: One of the things that a lot of people overlook
- 8:56Speaker 2: was when I was coming up and when a lot
- 9:01Speaker 2: of people were coming up in music, they're always constantly
- 9:05Speaker 2: trying to find a place where they can hone their
- 9:07Speaker 2: craft and sometimes that's not a classroom. It's especially for music,
- 9:14Speaker 2: for people that want to be in management, for people
- 9:17Speaker 2: that want to be in photography, videography, whatever that is.
- 9:23Speaker 2: They want a place where they can engage and sort
- 9:26Speaker 2: of learn trial by fire style a little bit, and
- 9:29Speaker 2: they want to be able to do it on their
- 9:30Speaker 2: own terms.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And so I wanted a space that they could utilize
- 9:34Speaker 3: that was.
- 9:34Speaker 2: On campus, especially with the incredible programs that Empty Issue
- 9:38Speaker 2: does have with the Recording Industry program, with a lot
- 9:41Speaker 2: of their other programs that they do there, and so
- 9:45Speaker 2: we transformed that space for them to use. And then also,
- 9:50Speaker 2: you know, I'd do several scholarships for MTISSUE. Just growing
- 9:55Speaker 2: up in Murphysboro, I always thought that was important.
- 9:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that's one ful. I'm a Belmont alum,
- 10:02Speaker 4: and I think there's always a lot of funding available
- 10:06Speaker 4: for the Belmont programs, but sometimes not as much for
- 10:10Speaker 4: the MTSU Music Business program. So I am so happy
- 10:14Speaker 4: that this is how you give back to your alma mater.
- 10:17Speaker 4: I think it's wonderful. And since we are on taking
- 10:22Speaker 4: a walk Nashville, and you're kind of a unicorn being
- 10:25Speaker 4: a Murphrey's Borough native, so do you have a favorite
- 10:30Speaker 4: place in Nashville or Murphrey's Borough that you like to
- 10:33Speaker 4: take a walk.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Well, I don't really want anyone finding.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Me, but that's true.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I do every now and then meet and my friends
- 10:43Speaker 2: will go for a hike with our dogs, because I
- 10:49Speaker 2: think everybody in my friend group has a dog at
- 10:51Speaker 2: this point. There's one guy that has a cat.
- 10:55Speaker 3: And you know who you are, Tigram.
- 10:59Speaker 4: What kind of dog do you have?
- 11:01Speaker 2: I have a very very large German shepherd who hates
- 11:09Speaker 2: anyone that rings the doorbell, So just I always like
- 11:13Speaker 2: people to tell me they're coming over first.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Right, Well, there's definitely so many great places in Nashville
- 11:21Speaker 4: to take a walk and to take a hike. What
- 11:25Speaker 4: do you hope for people to take from your new
- 11:27Speaker 4: album when they hear it?
- 11:30Speaker 2: You know, that's interesting because I do have a song
- 11:32Speaker 2: called what would you Take? That very for people to hear,
- 11:36Speaker 2: very very special song. But I would say, you know,
- 11:41Speaker 2: everybody gets so wrapped up sometimes in their music and
- 11:45Speaker 2: they're like, I gotta have this talking point. I gotta
- 11:47Speaker 2: have this one, and I got to do this and
- 11:49Speaker 2: I got to push this thing. I want people to
- 11:52Speaker 2: listen to the whole thing and take what they want.
- 11:54Speaker 2: You leave with what you need to take with you.
- 11:57Speaker 2: It's not up to me now that it's done. All
- 12:01Speaker 2: so you listen to the album and you hopefully fall
- 12:04Speaker 2: in love with one of those songs or all of them.
- 12:07Speaker 2: I don't care. I just want you to enjoy the music.
- 12:10Speaker 2: So I think people leave with what they're going to,
- 12:14Speaker 2: no matter if it's you know, you can spend a
- 12:17Speaker 2: million dollars promoting the record, and you know you see
- 12:21Speaker 2: it with the only thing I know to compare it
- 12:24Speaker 2: to the movies.
- 12:26Speaker 3: You can spend a whole bunch of money making a movie.
- 12:29Speaker 3: You can spend a little bit of money making a movie.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Sometimes that little bit of money that you made the
- 12:34Speaker 3: movie with is going to be.
- 12:35Speaker 2: The thing that people gravitate towards, and a little bit
- 12:39Speaker 2: of that is out of your control as a creator,
- 12:42Speaker 2: as an artist, as a person, as a team like
- 12:45Speaker 2: the people that work with me. But I think I
- 12:48Speaker 2: made something really special with this album, so hopefully people
- 12:51Speaker 2: take a whole bunch away with them.
- 12:53Speaker 4: Absolutely, I definitely think you provoke a lot of different
- 12:57Speaker 4: emotions in this album. Very excited for everyone to hear it. Chris,
- 13:02Speaker 4: thank you so much for being on Taking a Walk
- 13:05Speaker 4: Nashville today. Thank you for being.
