- 0:00Speaker 1: You play the broken so well, man. You really just
- 0:03Speaker 1: have a... I mean, you are just like a harp
- 0:08Speaker 1: that is missing some strings, you know? But it's really
- 0:11Speaker 1: beautiful to watch a lot of times.
- 0:15Speaker 2: What is that.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Why do you think that... Do you get attracted to
- 0:17Speaker 1: those roles? It seems like you must in some ways. Yeah.
- 0:22Speaker 1: And sorry to just kind of like pigeonhole you and
- 0:25Speaker 1: your abilities. I know you have a lot of abilities. Um.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Uh, I definitely, I don't know why I guess. Um, okay. So, uh,
- 0:42Speaker 2: my dad was, uh, he was, uh, he was a
- 0:47Speaker 2: complicated dude and he, um, there was like a lot
- 0:53Speaker 2: of like, um, I want to say dichotomy, but I
- 0:56Speaker 2: don't even really, I'm not entirely sure if that's, if
- 0:59Speaker 2: that's what I think, but it is like conflict or something.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And, and, and cause, um, it was really, it was
- 1:06Speaker 2: complex or something like very like, um, sensitive and sweet
- 1:12Speaker 2: and thoughtful about him. And he grew up in a pretty,
- 1:17Speaker 2: pretty tough situation. And, um, you know, was in juvie,
- 1:21Speaker 2: very young and had this very splintered family background. And,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know, it was like, they're pretty affected. Yeah. Like you,
- 1:31Speaker 2: you know, so you'd call like a shit kicker. And
- 1:33Speaker 2: he was like, so, but he also was like, he
- 1:36Speaker 2: also was like, like a fucking hippie was like, you know, was,
- 1:42Speaker 2: you know, vegan. Like, um, so yeah, So I think
- 1:49Speaker 2: he was so fascinating to me growing up because I
- 1:54Speaker 2: think I saw those things and that existed inside the
- 2:00Speaker 2: same person. Yeah, let's get fucked up and get a
- 2:03Speaker 2: salad on. Exactly. I mean, that's a crazy thing to
- 2:08Speaker 2: even think.
- 2:10Speaker 1: You know and i'm sorry to say that just a
- 2:11Speaker 1: little bit like no it's.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It's great it was it was great and it was
- 2:16Speaker 2: perfect and i needed that moment um so i i
- 2:20Speaker 2: think like that was really again i think maybe i
- 2:24Speaker 2: was i'm not you know i don't know why but
- 2:27Speaker 2: i think i was attracted to those roles maybe as
- 2:31Speaker 2: a way of Whatever. A connection or just something? Yeah,
- 2:37Speaker 2: just like. Familiarity? Just curiosity. You know what I mean?
- 2:40Speaker 2: Like he was kind of like the most interesting person
- 2:44Speaker 2: to me. And I probably wanted to like try and
- 2:47Speaker 2: understand him more or something. I don't know. Maybe or
- 2:50Speaker 2: maybe not. I don't really know. I mean, I definitely
- 2:54Speaker 2: in my life have a lot of my dad in me.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Really? Were you surprised that you got so much of it?
- 3:02Speaker 1: I was, and I think I was, like, the last
- 3:06Speaker 1: to know. But it was like, yeah, like that, like that.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And then, like, at some point, I was like, I
- 3:12Speaker 1: think they're saying, like, dad, like, those are not good qualities.
- 3:17Speaker 2: And so... Like sleeping in his car, dad. Like dad, yeah.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And so I then became aware of it. But, no,
- 3:25Speaker 2: I think my dad actually... I was aware... from fairly
- 3:33Speaker 2: young that, um, I, I think he's probably the greatest, uh,
- 3:43Speaker 2: influence or I was influenced by his life in my work. Um,
- 3:47Speaker 2: I don't know if this is making sense. Um, I
- 3:51Speaker 2: think I modeled so many characters that I've played after him. Hmm. Um, he's,
- 3:58Speaker 2: he's dead. He's been dead for a while, so I
- 4:00Speaker 2: can talk shit about him. Yeah, so he can't disagree
- 4:04Speaker 2: with you. Yeah, I was like, what are you going
- 4:06Speaker 2: to say? And if he is going to do it.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I just went because I was like, don't make a
- 4:12Speaker 2: joke about it. That's even worse.
- 4:14Speaker 1: No, we weren't sure if he died until you said it.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you. Don't look it up because
- 4:18Speaker 1: he might not be dead.
- 4:20Speaker 2: We don't. He has a clicking clacking over there. You
- 4:24Speaker 2: channel him right now and it's turned into him. That
- 4:26Speaker 2: would be crazy. Wow, that's kind of interesting. Yeah, I think,
- 4:29Speaker 2: you know what?
- 4:30Speaker 1: Sometimes I think I'm like my mom and I never
- 4:32Speaker 1: thought I would be. And I was always even like rebellious.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Against my mother.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And then I'm like, you gotta be. Sometimes I look
- 4:39Speaker 1: in the mirror, I'm like, you gotta be fucking kidding me,
- 4:42Speaker 1: you know? But then at the same time, it's like,
- 4:45Speaker 1: that was probably in my life, that was the connection
- 4:47Speaker 1: that I wanted the most anyway. So it's interesting that
- 4:49Speaker 1: that's what God gave me or that's how it, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 1: that like, oh, it's like, this is kind of what
- 4:54Speaker 1: I always wanted the most. And it's oddly- that's part
- 4:59Speaker 1: of the most of what I am, you know? Yeah.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Just interesting how sometimes things like that work out. Um,
- 5:04Speaker 1: was your dad a funny guy?
- 5:06Speaker 2: He's very funny. I mean, he was, um, he was
- 5:10Speaker 2: a ham. Oh, he was.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Like he loved, uh, doing skits for us kids. Really?
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:19Speaker 2: That's cool of him. And like joking around.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:22Speaker 2: He's very, um, Yeah, he was.
- 5:26Speaker 1: And what would he do, like death of a salesman
- 5:28Speaker 1: or death of, I don't know what he did for
- 5:29Speaker 1: a job, death of like a.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Employee somewhere?
- 5:34Speaker 1: Or he would just have fun moments?
- 5:38Speaker 2: One of his favorites, which always made us laugh, was
- 5:43Speaker 2: something called The Fly Skit, where he just was literally,
- 5:48Speaker 2: he just was a guy reading a paper on a bench.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And a fly starts buzzing around and he like waves
- 5:56Speaker 2: it away. Then he tries to like hit it with
- 5:59Speaker 2: the newspaper. You know, he like rolls it up and
- 6:01Speaker 2: like hits it. And finally he goes in his bag
- 6:03Speaker 2: and he takes out some bug spray and he goes
- 6:07Speaker 2: to spray it just as it lands on his nose
- 6:09Speaker 2: and he sprays himself in the face and then like
- 6:12Speaker 2: gets all fucked up from the bug spray and falls over.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And like when you're like six years old, that's the
- 6:20Speaker 2: most genius thing you've ever seen. Especially because We didn't
- 6:23Speaker 2: have like TV and shit when I was young. So
- 6:26Speaker 2: that was like high-level entertainment.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Your dad was the damn history channel when
- 6:31Speaker 1: you were a kid back in the day. You know
- 6:33Speaker 1: what I'm saying? That's so funny to think about. I
- 6:36Speaker 1: never thought of my parents were like the channels that
- 6:39Speaker 1: we had. Because we had some channels, but it wasn't
- 6:41Speaker 1: like that. It wasn't like every moment was access. So
- 6:44Speaker 1: really people were looked at as a lot more entertainment. Like,
- 6:47Speaker 1: let me go over. poke this bear and see what
- 6:49Speaker 1: I can get him to do a little bit, you know? Oh,
- 6:52Speaker 1: that's cool, dude. My dad, oh, it's so funny, dude.
- 6:56Speaker 1: My dad was very old when I was born. He
- 6:58Speaker 1: was like, he was born in 1910 or whatever. And
- 7:02Speaker 1: so he was like, everything was very like, you know,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and my brother and I would go to, he ran a,
- 7:10Speaker 1: the World's Fair was in New Orleans when I was
- 7:13Speaker 1: growing up and he ran a, I don't know if
- 7:15Speaker 1: he ran, but somehow they let him have the keys
- 7:17Speaker 1: to go in there in the morning. And it was
- 7:21Speaker 1: like a souvenir shop for the World's Fair or postcards,
- 7:25Speaker 1: stuff like that.
- 7:25Speaker 2: In the French Quarter.
- 7:27Speaker 1: And he'd always pay this guy, this guy who was
- 7:29Speaker 1: a clown, right? He'd be like, go get the kids
- 7:31Speaker 1: a couple of wieners or franks, you know, hot dogs.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So I just remember like one of my early memories
- 7:38Speaker 1: is just being with my brother in this clown that
- 7:41Speaker 1: my dad had given a couple shackles to running us
- 7:43Speaker 1: down the street to get us a couple of fucking
- 7:45Speaker 1: hot dogs and i was like oh it's gonna be
- 7:48Speaker 1: a fucking interesting road.
- 7:50Speaker 2: So how old were you uh when he moved on when.
- 7:54Speaker 1: He moved on i was 16 and i was it
- 7:57Speaker 1: was weird because i was like embarrassed to my dad
- 7:59Speaker 1: because he was older so i didn't want to introduce
- 8:00Speaker 1: him to people i always had like this weird relationship
- 8:03Speaker 1: but then i think as a kid it was fascinating
- 8:05Speaker 1: to watch this older guy that uh.
- 8:11Speaker 2: That you love so much, but you're also trying to
- 8:13Speaker 2: keep hidden, you know? So how, when you were 16,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I do not, I'm not, I'm going to fail at math.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I'm trying to figure out, I'm trying to figure out
- 8:23Speaker 2: if that's how my son is going to think of me.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I was 45 when he was born. Huh?
- 8:31Speaker 1: I think you're going to be okay. It's going to be,
- 8:33Speaker 1: do not get a cane early though. If you get
- 8:36Speaker 1: a cane early, he'll know. I thought about this. I
- 8:40Speaker 1: was just thinking about yesterday because I've got to knock
- 8:42Speaker 1: somebody up in the next two years because I need
- 8:43Speaker 1: a family.
- 8:44Speaker 2: But if you get a cane early, he's going to know. Right.
- 8:48Speaker 2: So when I had my first son, I was your age.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And it is something that I think about constantly. Because
- 8:59Speaker 2: I just want to be able to be a fun
- 9:03Speaker 2: dad and not be this– So did your dad die suddenly?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Can I ask? Yeah, it's okay, man.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Yeah, he got cancer, and I didn't even know about
- 9:12Speaker 1: cancer that much, and he died pretty quick. It was
- 9:16Speaker 1: pretty sad because suddenly he got like, yeah, it was
- 9:19Speaker 1: just kind of sad. I mean, it's all sad, but
- 9:22Speaker 1: then it was, you know, I don't know.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Well, of course it was sad.
- 9:25Speaker 1: One might think we're fucking, you know, everybody was like
- 9:30Speaker 1: getting the champagne out, but he was a ridiculous person.
- 9:33Speaker 2: But my dad couldn't see. He would drive.
- 9:34Speaker 1: He would take us somewhere, but he couldn't see the
- 9:36Speaker 1: lights or anything. So he'd be like, is it red
- 9:39Speaker 1: or green? And suddenly we'd get it wrong, and he'd
- 9:40Speaker 1: fucking just drive out.
- 9:41Speaker 2: It was all baffling. That sounds kind of cool.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:45Speaker 2: I think he would have dug it. I've got to say.
- 9:47Speaker 2: He would have dug it. Wow. You would have dug it.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Did your dad have cancer or no? Yeah, he did.
- 9:54Speaker 2: He did? He did.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:56Speaker 2: And here's something else that's fucked up. Okay. My sisters
- 9:59Speaker 2: lost his ashes.
- 10:01Speaker 1: No.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Every couple months, somebody will send out a text
- 10:07Speaker 2: to the thread being like, has anybody found dad's ashes? Oh, dang. Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Because all he could do is fucking laugh because it's horrible.
- 10:21Speaker 2: It's just horrible.
- 10:23Speaker 1: It's almost really like his last performance. I mean, that's
- 10:26Speaker 1: such a fucking great. It's a great bit.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You're right. It's his best moment.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Dads as anybody found I love that text too you know.
- 10:39Speaker 2: Just randomly every once in a while because it'll occur
- 10:42Speaker 2: to one of us I'll be like yeah which where
- 10:45Speaker 2: the fuck are dad's asses he sent that out and
- 10:50Speaker 2: still don't know here's the thing I mean I'm blaming
- 10:53Speaker 2: my sisters yeah might have been me I don't know
- 10:58Speaker 2: the thing is is that it's one of those real
- 11:00Speaker 2: like you know sometimes you have a vague memory of
- 11:02Speaker 2: like I know we were in here yeah No idea.
- 11:06Speaker 2: No idea. Like, yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Do you ever walk in the kitchen? You're like, it's
- 11:10Speaker 1: kind of like that thing. Like, what was I in
- 11:12Speaker 1: here to get? You know, where did, where did I
- 11:14Speaker 1: put those?
- 11:14Speaker 2: You know? Oh man. Thanks for sharing that. That's funny.
- 11:18Speaker 1: I'm glad we even got to laugh about your dad
- 11:19Speaker 1: today and my dad. That's cool. I think our, I
- 11:22Speaker 1: think spirits, I think like when you laugh about somebody
- 11:25Speaker 1: from your like life or something like that, I think
- 11:27Speaker 1: they feel that on the other side.
- 11:29Speaker 2: I think there's like a big connection there that we
- 11:31Speaker 2: don't know about.
