Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: If You Run, You're a Runner
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Hey, everyone. Emily Abadi here.
- 0:08Speaker 2: You are listening to 5-Minute Friday on Hurdle.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I am coming to you back. in Australia. Y'all are like,
- 0:31Speaker 1: what is going on with this girl? And let me
- 0:34Speaker 1: tell you what's going on with me. So I guess
- 0:36Speaker 1: I wasn't clear about what the plan was. So let's
- 0:40Speaker 1: just clarify that for everyone. The plan was always to
- 0:44Speaker 1: come back to Australia. At first, the plan was to
- 0:47Speaker 1: stay in Australia for all of September. So basically, what
- 0:51Speaker 1: happened was I booked a roundtrip ticket from, I think,
- 0:55Speaker 1: like August 25th to September 28th. And then a couple
- 0:59Speaker 1: of different work opportunities presented themselves in Los Angeles last weekend.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And so I made the decision to go to Los
- 1:09Speaker 1: Angeles from Thursday to Monday and then come back. because
- 1:13Speaker 1: I have more work here in Sydney next weekend. Next weekend,
- 1:17Speaker 1: I'm going to be doing a live show with Coach
- 1:20Speaker 1: Bennett as a part of the celebration surrounding the After
- 1:26Speaker 1: Dark Tour here in Sydney.
- 1:28Speaker 2: And so that is why I am back.
- 1:31Speaker 1: And I figured, you know, like I said, when I
- 1:34Speaker 1: decided on this whole experience. I had never been to
- 1:39Speaker 1: Australia up until this point. And I found it very
- 1:42Speaker 1: interesting that my life was giving me two reasons to
- 1:45Speaker 1: be there within basically a month long period. A, to
- 1:48Speaker 1: run the marathon, which I was already planning on doing,
- 1:51Speaker 1: and B.
- 1:52Speaker 2: This job with Nike.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And so I said, if life is bringing me there
- 1:56Speaker 1: twice within a 30-day period, then I must stay. So
- 2:00Speaker 1: that was the original plan. Then the work popped up.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Now I'm back.
- 2:04Speaker 1: And I'm really excited to be in Bondi. I've been
- 2:06Speaker 1: here for like 36 hours so far. And I really
- 2:11Speaker 1: dig it. So many highlights. A, it's stunning. I went
- 2:15Speaker 1: on a run this morning and I don't think I've
- 2:17Speaker 1: ever been on a more beautiful run. I was stopping
- 2:21Speaker 1: every 15 feet to take a photo of the waves crashing.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And I went during sunrise, which happens at 5.50 here.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And so crazy, as I'm walking around town today, everyone's
- 2:32Speaker 1: up early. There are run clubs that happen all over
- 2:36Speaker 1: this area and they're all called for 6 or 6.15 a.m.,
- 2:40Speaker 1: which makes sense because I went to a friend's event,
- 2:43Speaker 1: Sydney Marathon Weekend. And that started at 6.30, which if
- 2:47Speaker 1: that happened in New York, that would be a little
- 2:49Speaker 1: early for us, even though I would say that New
- 2:51Speaker 1: York's a pretty.
- 2:52Speaker 2: early city. I digress.
- 2:54Speaker 1: There's also beautiful people walking around everywhere, which my friend Lydia,
- 2:59Speaker 1: who lives on the Sunshine Coast, I'm going to go
- 3:01Speaker 1: hang out with her this weekend. She said to me,
- 3:04Speaker 1: don't be fooled. So I've got my eyes peeled not
- 3:07Speaker 1: to be fooled. But I joined a gym near my
- 3:09Speaker 1: hotel for the week. You Truly, I don't think I've
- 3:16Speaker 1: ever seen more beautiful people in a concentrated area before.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Although I did get a DM from a friend who said,
- 3:22Speaker 1: clearly I've never been to the Equinox in Chicago.
- 3:25Speaker 2: So I guess maybe I need to go to the
- 3:27Speaker 2: Equinox in Chicago. I digress.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I also got a lot of DMs after I shared
- 3:33Speaker 1: that I joined the gym for a week. People being like,
- 3:36Speaker 1: your motivation is insane. And the thing is, is like,
- 3:40Speaker 1: Where there's a why, there's a way. I'm going to
- 3:42Speaker 1: say that again. Where there's a why, there's a way.
- 3:46Speaker 1: And so for me, I know what makes me feel good.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I know that movement makes me feel good. I know
- 3:53Speaker 1: that I'm excited post-marathon to get back to lifting. And
- 3:56Speaker 1: so I wanted to find a place while I was
- 3:58Speaker 1: back in this area for the duration of my time
- 4:02Speaker 1: here to make sure that I could do that. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: it was on my to-do list for the first day
- 4:08Speaker 1: that I arrived. So I arrived. This gym happens to
- 4:12Speaker 1: literally be like 12 feet from my front doorstep of
- 4:17Speaker 1: the hotel.
- 4:17Speaker 2: I walked in. I inquired.
- 4:20Speaker 1: They were super kind. They had all the stuff that
- 4:23Speaker 1: I wanted to use. And I said, hey, let's do it.
- 4:26Speaker 1: So we're doing it. But on that note of like,
- 4:29Speaker 1: you're so motivated. Here's the thing. is that motivation almost
- 4:35Speaker 1: always follows action for me. So yes, I know I
- 4:38Speaker 1: like to move. Yes, I know how movement makes me feel.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And I know that there are actions that I need
- 4:43Speaker 1: to take to make this all fall into place. It's
- 4:46Speaker 1: not just going to happen for me. I'm not just
- 4:49Speaker 1: going to stumble into a gym. I also have to
- 4:51Speaker 1: make an investment, right? I'm investing in my health. I'm
- 4:54Speaker 1: investing in my mental health. I'm investing in what makes
- 4:58Speaker 1: me feel good. Everybody's different. But at this point in
- 5:03Speaker 1: my life here, my 38 years on this earth, I
- 5:08Speaker 1: know what's important to me. And like I said, where
- 5:10Speaker 1: there's a why, there's a way. And this isn't just
- 5:14Speaker 1: about moving your body, although I feel really strongly about that.
- 5:19Speaker 1: When we think about any goal that we're going after,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you need to be able to articulate why that thing
- 5:24Speaker 1: is important to you. It can't just be something that
- 5:26Speaker 1: looks buzzy and exciting that you see on social media.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Because if you start going after somebody else's goal, I
- 5:32Speaker 1: can promise you that journey isn't going to last you long.
- 5:35Speaker 1: And it certainly will not feel rewarding. You need that
- 5:40Speaker 1: intrinsic motivation. And so where there's a why, there's a way.
- 5:46Speaker 1: And you get to, stress on the word get, decide
- 5:50Speaker 1: what excites you and literally in this moment, how you
- 5:54Speaker 1: want to proceed going forward.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Maybe you too.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Will decide on your next trip to snag yourself a
- 6:02Speaker 1: little gym situation. Maybe also you're thinking, okay, I've got
- 6:06Speaker 1: this goal and I'm actually not that jazzed about it.
- 6:09Speaker 1: You can change your mind at any time. You can
- 6:12Speaker 1: change your mind at any time. That's what free will
- 6:16Speaker 1: is for. So listen to what's happening in here, in
- 6:20Speaker 1: your gut, in your heart, and move with intention, okay?
- 6:24Speaker 1: That's my updates for now. My listener prompt for you
- 6:27Speaker 1: this week is someone actually, I know I used this
- 6:33Speaker 1: one recently and I got a few messages about it,
- 6:36Speaker 1: but I would love to get some more. So I
- 6:38Speaker 1: want to know what your goal is right now. It
- 6:41Speaker 1: can be a short-term goal. It can be an action,
- 6:44Speaker 1: a habit-based goal. It can be something that you're chasing.
- 6:48Speaker 1: in the future, whatever it is, I want to know
- 6:51Speaker 1: what excites you because I'm constantly sharing with you guys
- 6:54Speaker 1: the things.
- 6:54Speaker 2: That I'm going after.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So message me either on the socials over at Emily Abadi,
- 6:59Speaker 1: or you can always email me at hello at hurdle.us.
- 7:04Speaker 1: And now a listener question. Hi, Emily, longtime listener and
- 7:09Speaker 1: fan of the show. I want to ask a very
- 7:11Speaker 1: controversial question today. And that is, I know Hurdle is
- 7:14Speaker 1: a running focus podcast, very inspirational in a lot of ways.
- 7:18Speaker 1: but I've realized something about myself and I was hoping
- 7:20Speaker 1: you could speak to that. And that is genuinely that
- 7:23Speaker 1: I don't like running. I learned that about myself recently,
- 7:27Speaker 1: not through an injury or anything, but I have great
- 7:30Speaker 1: admiration for people who run marathons and things like that.
- 7:33Speaker 1: But for me personally, a 5k is, you know, the
- 7:35Speaker 1: distance I'm willing to run. And so I guess my
- 7:38Speaker 1: question is, is running a sport for everyone?
- 7:40Speaker 2: That's one.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And also I know it's a very accessible sport compared
- 7:44Speaker 1: to others and you don't need a lot of things
- 7:46Speaker 1: like equipment, but Do you think, in your opinion, after
- 7:51Speaker 1: running the Sydney Marathon and everything, do you think everybody
- 7:56Speaker 1: is supposed to run a marathon? I just feel like
- 7:58Speaker 1: there's this constant pressure and maybe it's because I'm in
- 8:01Speaker 1: my 30s and everything and people feel like they need
- 8:03Speaker 1: to do all of these ostentatious things and achieve peak
- 8:05Speaker 1: physical health and do a high rocks and you get
- 8:08Speaker 1: what I'm saying. But, you know, now that you've run many,
- 8:12Speaker 1: many marathons, do you think running a marathon is for everyone?
- 8:15Speaker 2: And if not, why not? Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow, wow.
- 8:21Speaker 2: What a question. This is a good question.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I do believe in my heart that running can be
- 8:29Speaker 1: for anyone. I believe that in the highlight reel that
- 8:35Speaker 1: is social media, we are constantly shown the best of
- 8:39Speaker 1: the best and And literally, if you have a body
- 8:43Speaker 1: and you run, regardless of the pace, regardless for how long,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you are a runner.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Let me say that one more time for the people
- 8:51Speaker 2: in the back.
- 8:52Speaker 1: If you have a body and you run, regardless of
- 8:56Speaker 1: the pace, congratulations, you're a runner. So with that said,
- 9:01Speaker 1: the distance, that's completely up to you. You do not
- 9:05Speaker 1: have to do anything that you don't want to do.
- 9:08Speaker 1: And I just talked about goals. If running a marathon
- 9:12Speaker 1: isn't something that excites you, if that's not something that
- 9:14Speaker 1: you have a strong why to do, then absolutely not.
- 9:19Speaker 1: I am not the person that's going to tell you
- 9:22Speaker 1: that you should run a marathon. But what I will say,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and I'll say it with my whole chest, is that
- 9:27Speaker 1: for me personally, running a marathon, the decision to do
- 9:32Speaker 1: that hard thing, the decision to put myself out there,
- 9:34Speaker 1: the decision to.
- 9:36Speaker 2: move forward at my own pace.
- 9:40Speaker 1: That was the best thing I ever did for myself
- 9:44Speaker 1: back in 2013. And that is why I've done it
- 9:47Speaker 1: 16 times since. Again, I have a strong why. And
- 9:51Speaker 1: I also love the journey. I love how I feel
- 9:55Speaker 1: training for a marathon. It feels good for me in
- 9:58Speaker 1: my body. That does not mean, again, louder for the
- 10:02Speaker 1: people in the back, that everyone should run one. But
- 10:06Speaker 1: if it is something that you too can find enjoyment in,
- 10:08Speaker 1: if it is something that feels good for you in
- 10:11Speaker 1: your body, then hey, maybe it's for you. But again,
- 10:15Speaker 1: don't let anyone shame you into what you feel as
- 10:17Speaker 1: though you should, air quotes, be doing. Do what feels
- 10:21Speaker 1: good for you. Set goals that excite you and goals that, again,
- 10:25Speaker 1: I mentioned that word journey, that you can enjoy the
- 10:28Speaker 1: journey to getting.
- 10:30Speaker 2: To, okay?
- 10:32Speaker 1: If you have a buddy, buddy, if you have a buddy,
- 10:34Speaker 1: if you also have a body and you run, you're
- 10:38Speaker 1: a runner, all right? Over at emilyabody, at Hurdle Podcast,
