- 2:00Islander in my heart. Ladies and gentlemen, we are now
- 2:03talking to former Rangers and Islanders Stanley Cup winning
- 2:08General manager, the one that we love from the 94 New York Ranger
- 2:13Championship team. Who built it, who traded for
- 2:17Marc Messier? Who decided to trade my favorite
- 2:20player away, the 1:00 we call Neil Smith.
- 2:24Neil, what's up, my friend? I'm good, Harold, Who was your
- 2:27favorite player that I traded away?
- 2:28Sean Van Beesbrook, I told you that.
- 2:31Oh, that's right, That's right. I thought you were going to say
- 2:33Mike Gartner, and I had Mike Gartner on the show the other
- 2:36day. So I said, I said, Mike, you
- 2:38know, I've taken more crap for trading you than everybody.
- 2:43And everybody says I wish you hadn't traded Gardner.
- 2:45I said I wish I hadn't too, but you got to do what you got to
- 2:48do. Yeah, it's called Mike Keenan.
- 2:50That's what you got to do. You got to deal with that guy.
- 2:53I mean, and we're working on getting Mike on the show.
- 2:55That would be interesting. It would be really interesting
- 2:58to get Neil Smith and Mike Keenan on at the same time.
- 3:01Could you imagine, would you think that would work?
- 3:03I don't think so. I think before you know it, I
- 3:06see Neil trying to grab and try to jump through his screen and
- 3:09choke Mike Keenan before it even happens.
- 3:11So I, I don't think it'll work. But Neil, I want to get into a
- 3:15lot of hockey with you because to me, if there's anybody that
- 3:18knows more about hockey than you, I don't know who it is.
- 3:22You've been around great hockey teams, great hockey players, the
- 3:27Canadians falling short for gold and and United States finally
- 3:31doing something that a team has not done on the United States
- 3:35men's hockey team, has not done since 1980, Miracle on Ice.
- 3:39What were your thoughts on that goal by Jack Hughes, as they
- 3:43call the golden goal? What did you think?
- 3:46And do you think that the United States played hard enough to win
- 3:50that game? Yeah.
- 3:51Yeah, I do. I, I think what happens in these
- 3:53games is sometimes a goaltender can completely win the game for
- 3:59you. And I, I got to say, I think
- 4:00that Conor Hallibuck won the gold medal for the United States
- 4:03because he was unbelievable the way he held Canada out of the
- 4:08out of scoring and, and they should have been up 3 or 4 to
- 4:11one at some point during that game.
- 4:13It should never have gotten no overtime.
- 4:15But then when it gets to overtime in the Olympic
- 4:17Committee decided to go three on three, which I don't understand
- 4:21because they were going three on three for 20 minute periods.
- 4:25They said if they if it gets through 20 minutes and it's
- 4:28still tied, we'll go another 20 minutes at three on three.
- 4:30Well then go 5 on five, do a real game.
- 4:33Don't do skills competition. But anyway, you know what, it
- 4:38was fair and square. Jack Hughes got that goal.
- 4:41They got caught up the ice. The Canadians did on McDavid
- 4:45sort of missed on that shot going up and then the US got the
- 4:49puck, got it up to great defenceman for Columbus, Zach
- 4:53Warrensky got the puck up to him.
- 4:55He made a fabulous play to Jack Hughes and Jack Hughes is a goal
- 4:59scorer. I mean, we all here's the play
- 5:00here. Look at this, Warrensky goes
- 5:03after it, somehow McDavid loses it and then he gets it right
- 5:06across and Jack Hughes makes no mistake.
- 5:07So you know what, great on them, great for hockey.
- 5:11It's the whole thing is fabulous, I think.
- 5:14How about Jack Hughes getting his teeth knocked out and and
- 5:19and pretty much said he was he swallowed one of his teeth is
- 5:22half a tooth and then getting up bleeding.
- 5:25Peterson, I think on Canada hit him and he had a 4 minute minor
- 5:29and a major, I'm sorry, 4 minute major and then the he goes, he
- 5:34goes into the box. the United States team does not score in
- 5:39the 1st 2 minutes and then he gets a penalty.
- 5:40He goes into the box. You get scared and then the the
- 5:44United States kill the penalty and it goes to overtime.
- 5:47I mean, it all fell well, well, but the thing that stood out to
- 5:50me in that, in that game was the the the save that Connor
- 5:54Hollabock made against Devin Thames with the shaft of his
- 5:59stick. It was it you didn't realize and
- 6:02you didn't notice it until Eddie Olczyk said, I think he I think
- 6:05he hit his stick. I think it hit his stick.
- 6:06And then you watch the replay and you were like, odd.
- 6:09I was like, how did that miss the net?
- 6:11How did that not go in? And Connor Hollabock was
- 6:14amazing. You're absolutely right.
- 6:16When you look at both coaches and Cooper and Sullivan and what
- 6:21they did throughout the game, do you think they Cooper did enough
- 6:25to figure out maybe change the lines later in the third period
- 6:29to maybe give them a bitter bigger or better, more advantage
- 6:33against Team USA with the talent that they have?
- 6:35You know what I think that he, I can't second guess John Cooper
- 6:38because he is such a great coach.
- 6:40And I thought that they were, they were out playing the US
- 6:42most of the game. I thought the one that that
- 6:44Canada got the five on three, usually that swings some
- 6:49momentum. If you don't score, the momentum
- 6:51gets swung to the defending team.
- 6:53If you do score, you get the momentum.
- 6:55That's usually what 5 on threes do.
- 6:57They swing the momentum one way or the other and Canada kept,
- 7:01you know, went and had the momentum after not scoring.
- 7:04That's what I found amazing because the US up until that
- 7:07five on three, I thought had the better of the play.
- 7:10And then from the five on three, from then on, it seemed like
- 7:14Canada had the better of the play and the US was sort of back
- 7:17on their heels a little bit. But I don't, I don't know that I
- 7:21can criticize John for not changing his lines around or
- 7:23doing anything. I mean, his team was was going
- 7:26real good. You expected a goal at any time
- 7:30and it just wasn't to be. And again, you know what, like
- 7:33you think back to the Marty Bradur days, the Patrick Wah
- 7:36days, the these fabulous goaltender set that win games,
- 7:41win series, win cups. I think Connor Hellebuck did
- 7:45that for them with this gold medal.
- 7:47You forgot about Mike Richter. Remember what he did?
- 7:49Of course. Well, I didn't.
- 7:50I didn't want to brag this. Was Charles bias?
- 7:55I mean, the the guy that he traded away, John Van Beesburg
- 7:58did it. I mean, he didn't win a Stanley
- 8:00Cup, but he got his team all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals,
- 8:02so. You sure did.
- 8:03Yeah, boy, oh boy did he stand on his head that year.
- 8:06And it's funny. It's funny when I, when I spoke
- 8:09to the Beezer like years ago and I, I brought up that time and
- 8:13and I, I brought up the Rangers trading him.
- 8:16He never, he didn't mention you, Neil, or never took shots at
- 8:19you. He said that changed my career,
- 8:21that changed my trajectory. And he said if that didn't
- 8:25happen, maybe the great things that happened after that never
- 8:29happened for me. So he says you have to, you have
- 8:32to wonder what would have happened if I stayed with the
- 8:34Rangers and want to stay. I never told you this one with
- 8:37the one, the Stanley Cup with the Rangers, Maybe that changes
- 8:40everything. That changes my trajectory, so,
- 8:42he said. I I, I'm not upset that I never
- 8:45won a Stanley Cup. Yeah, that the the issue was
- 8:48though, and people, you know, this is so long ago, people
- 8:50might not remember those expansion draft rules were you
- 8:55could only protect one goalie. So you you had to make a
- 8:58decision between Richter and Van Biesburg.
- 9:01I had no choice and Richter was the younger guy and we just all
- 9:06thought that we should go with Richter.
- 9:08And then it was hard. I found a trade for Van
- 9:11Biesburg, if you remember trading him to Vancouver.
- 9:16And then Rodger Nielsen and and Bobby Clark for Florida took
- 9:22John in the first pick. And that's why we got Doug
- 9:25Lidster, who ended up on the ice for the Stanley Cup buzzer
- 9:29against Vancouver. But it was it was difficult for
- 9:33teams. I mean, you could only keep 1
- 9:35goalie and you have two good ones.
- 9:37What are you going to do? You got to trade one guy or the
- 9:39other. I know, Neil, I, I, I forgive
- 9:41you. I mean, after having you on the
- 9:43show a couple of times, I forgive you.
- 9:45I But you know what? It changed my trajectory because
- 9:48then I followed Van Beesbrook. I became a Florida Panther fan.
- 9:51And then when he went to the Islanders for the year, year and
- 9:541/2, he was there. I became an Islander fan because
- 9:56he was also with the, if I'm not mistaken, he was with
- 9:59Philadelphia and then he went to the Islanders.
- 10:02I, I, I didn't root for Philadelphia.
- 10:03I just want to, I rooted for him.
- 10:05I stayed with the Panthers, but when he went to the Islanders, I
- 10:09said, you know what? I'm going to be an Islander fan.
- 10:11And boy, oh boy, I made the wrong decision for a while, but
- 10:14I'm happy now. I mean, I got something.
- 10:16That, you know, I think John is Beazers, one of the only players
- 10:19and I don't know the other names.
- 10:21I think there's one or two others that played for the
- 10:24Rangers, the Islanders and the Devils played all three.
- 10:28I'm trying. That's a good question.
- 10:30That's a good. Question.
- 10:31Yeah, it is good trivia question.
- 10:32But he did he he he was in uniform for all three.
- 10:36So I want to ask from the Canadian perspective, like the
- 10:39obviously they've had the goalie platoons and I, I know you're
- 10:41mentioning you don't blame John Cooper for the way they rotate
- 10:43the line and stuff like that. But we always see like playing
- 10:45styles for these goalies that are maybe questionable, like
- 10:48they had to rotate. I thought Logan Thompson maybe
- 10:50should have played more because Bennington was kind of up and
- 10:52down throughout the tournament. Like, do you think that kind of
- 10:54thing is with the playing style is something that Canada had an
- 10:57issue throughout this tournament even winning?
- 10:59A mouthful. A mouthful right there.
- 11:01Yeah, I mean, Ben Bennington to me, you know, it's hard to
- 11:05believe he's that sounds very negative.
- 11:07What I'm going to say is it sounds hard to believe that
- 11:09Bennington is the best Canadian goalie.
- 11:12But you know, they said that the way he played in the Four
- 11:16Nations, he earned that spot on the Olympic team.
- 11:20And then when the Olympics started, the first three games,
- 11:22I mean, he was great. And I'm not saying he wasn't
- 11:24good in the in the game, even though Boldy scored on him on
- 11:28that great rush he had. And then of course Jack scored,
- 11:34Bennington was still good. I just don't see Bennington as
- 11:38the best Canadian goalie out there.
- 11:39Maybe, and I might be totally wrong, Doug Armstrong's AGM.
- 11:44Guess what? Doug Armstrong's also the GM of
- 11:47Saint Louis, which happens to be Bennington's team.
- 11:50So I don't know, I think there's, you know, everybody can
- 11:55look in the rear view Mirror Now and and see things.
- 11:57That was a fantastic move by Baldy, the way he put it up in
- 12:02the air. And you know, how many kids are
- 12:04going to be trying for the next 5 years to replicate that move
- 12:07and try to try to do that, that sort of like toss it up in the
- 12:10air and go through that was amazing.
- 12:13And he did it between Daves and Makar, I believe.
- 12:17Yeah, he did. He looked really good too.
- 12:19He looked good all the whole tournament.
- 12:21It didn't show on as far as his statistics, but he was very,
- 12:24very good. And and, and I'll tell you this,
- 12:27Sullivan really mixed the lines up very, very well.
- 12:31And you can see why Sullivan is and why the Rangers decided to
- 12:35go with him. I mean, Chris Jury, the idiot
- 12:36decided to go with him. I'm just, I can't stand Chris
- 12:39Jury. I played hockey with him.
- 12:41I never liked him as a hockey player.
- 12:43I never liked his. You know, I didn't like his
- 12:46father. So when I played against him, it
- 12:48was very, very hard to deal with every single, every single time
- 12:52I was on the ice and had to deal with stepping off the ice and,
- 12:55and dealing with during intermissions and dealing with
- 12:57his father screaming at me. So I wasn't, I wasn't a big
- 13:01Chris Drury fan. So I always take shots and I'm
- 13:03on this show. I've always attacked him on this
- 13:06show, but I don't think he knows what he's doing.
- 13:08I I really don't. The fact that the Rangers quit
- 13:11the way they I've never seen a Ranger team quit before the All
- 13:15Star break, quit before the Olympic break the way they did.
- 13:18And then they're trading away pieces and Panarin, they got
- 13:22nothing back for Panarin. This guy is one of the best
- 13:24offensive players in the NHL. And they said, you know what,
- 13:28we'll just give him for this guy.
- 13:29It looks like a nice guy. I mean, he's going to 100
- 13:32points. He's all right, you know, and
- 13:34we'll get another guy and we'll just trade him over there in LA
- 13:37and hopefully that'll work and and maybe we'll trade Vincent
- 13:39Trochek. He's just one of the best two
- 13:41way players in the league. He'll probably go for, you know,
- 13:44a little pepper and salt and, you know, that's it.
- 13:46You know, we're about to lose. We're going to try to get as
- 13:49much as we can in this year's draft.
- 13:51What the hell is this guy doing? Neil, you are a GM.
- 13:55You've been a GM, a successful GM to build this team, this
- 13:59organization. What the hell is this man doing?
- 14:02Yeah, I can't answer Darryl because I, I, I have no idea.
- 14:05I don't see the plan. I don't see why they're doing
- 14:08the things they're doing. I haven't liked it since
- 14:11Goudreau. I didn't like the Trouba thing.
- 14:13I don't like the Kreider thing. I don't like, I didn't like the
- 14:17Kapo Kako thing. I didn't like any of it.
- 14:20And I Panarin, you're right. Like you're going to trade
- 14:24Panarin because you're not going to re sign him.
- 14:26Well, you know, you got to get more than that or else just let
- 14:33them leave at the end of the year there.
- 14:35You know, someone said this to me the other day.
- 14:38In baseball, players leave at the end of the year.
- 14:41And and not every baseball GM is, is, you know, tarred and
- 14:47feathered because a baseball player walked out on them at the
- 14:50end of the year. It seems like in hockey is the
- 14:52only sport where if if a if a player walks away as a free
- 14:56agent, you tar and feather the GM.
- 14:58Well, you would have been better when you to stay with Panarin
- 15:02and keep trying to make it because you know, and instead of
- 15:06trading him off for nothing. It it just doesn't ring with me
- 15:11why that happened. I I don't understand the
- 15:14philosophy. I don't understand the plan of
- 15:17of what they were doing with that.
- 15:20And I sure don't see this retooling quote.
- 15:24You're not rebuilding your retooling.
- 15:27Well, let me tell you something. If you tear a building down, how
- 15:32do you retool it? You, you know, it's, it's gone.
- 15:35You got to rebuild it. And this building is torn down.
- 15:39So I don't, I don't know what they're doing.
- 15:41I can't see it from the outside. Hey, you know what?
- 15:44I should ring, ring, ring and call James Dolan, Say hey, why
- 15:48did you go on the carton show his first day back on WFEN and
- 15:53come out with this garbage? Because I'm not buying it.
- 15:56I haven't bought anything. Anything Chris Drury has done,
- 16:01by the way, we are talking to former Rangers and Islanders
- 16:03Stanley Cup winning general manager Neil Smith.
- 16:06He's a friend of the show, does such a great job with his
- 16:09podcast. He's sensational and one of the
- 16:11guys that I believe should be in the Hall of Fame and hopefully
- 16:14listen. When you get inducted in the
- 16:15Hall of Fame, you better invite me.
- 16:17I want to be. I will, I will.
- 16:19You get me in there and you'll be there with me at the party.
- 16:21I'm going to be there at the party.
- 16:23I'll be dancing on the stage, man.
- 16:24I'll be dancing as your backup dancer.
- 16:26I'll be like, yeah, wait a second, why am I not holding the
- 16:30Stanley Cup? That will bring us John Van
- 16:33Beesbrook Jersey. By the way.
- 16:35Yeah, yeah, that's fine. That would that would really
- 16:38sell to the people, ladies and gentlemen.
- 16:42So you brought up Bennington. All right, now I was there the
- 16:47night they won the Stanley Cup in Boston.
- 16:50I was on the ice when the Saint Louis Blues won that Stanley
- 16:53Cup. And I walked up to Pennington
- 16:56and I asked him. I said, listen, I know you have
- 16:58a lot of people. And I got a couple of questions
- 17:00to ask you. You, you were sensational
- 17:02throughout the Stanley Cup finals.
- 17:04You, you came out of nowhere. And I, Craig Barubi is one of
- 17:07the nicest people you'll ever meet.
- 17:08He really is. He was sensational, one of the
- 17:11nicest people you'll ever meet. And shout out to Craig Barubi.
- 17:15But this man is the biggest piece of, you know what I have
- 17:20ever met. I walked up there and I said,
- 17:22listen, can I get a couple of questions?
- 17:24He said, who do you work for? I said, what does it matter?
- 17:27You want a Stanley Cup? I got a question to ask you.
- 17:30He says, well, I, I got other, you know, I got other questions
- 17:33to ask you. So I said, I walked away.
- 17:34I walk away and these two beautiful women walk up to him
- 17:37and he's like, he's got just fire away, fire away.
- 17:40I'm like, I turned around, I looked at him.
- 17:43I'm like, I wish I had that stick.
- 17:44I'd shove it right where the sun doesn't shine.
- 17:46That piece of garbage, I walked right away and then I went to
- 17:50Keith Kentucky and I asked Keith, by the way, Keith is not
- 17:52a nice guy either, by the way. So I enough said on that.
- 17:57When when you look at some of these players and you've worked
- 18:00with a lot of them and I'm not going to throw you under the bus
- 18:03and I don't want to get you in trouble.
- 18:05Is there a particular player that stood out to you that
- 18:07really just you didn't see eye to eye with, you just didn't
- 18:11like because of his attitude? Was there a player out there
- 18:14that you traded for, drafted or just a specific player that you
- 18:19just, you just don't like them? A name doesn't come to mind, but
- 18:22there's got to be somebody out there.
- 18:24If if they proved to to be selfish and not a team guy, we
- 18:29got rid of them pretty quickly. I can't.
- 18:31A name doesn't come to mind. I can name you 25 players that I
- 18:37loved, but players that I didn't like I I guess I just
- 18:41immediately forget about them. So I threw you a curve.
- 18:44You know nobody's ever asked you that question, huh?
- 18:47No, not really, no. And I mean, even even the
- 18:49players that I inherited when I got there and that I traded
- 18:54really early, Michelle Petit was my first trade to Quebec for
- 18:58Randy Mohler. I can't say anything bad about.
- 19:01Michelle Petit, I can't say anything bad about anybody that
- 19:04I had there that I didn't like them.
- 19:06There were some guys that just weren't team guys and then there
- 19:10were there were other guys that I was pissed because I would
- 19:13trade them and then they would badmouth me like I was some
- 19:17badass because I traded them. Well, you know what?
- 19:20You signed up for this job like you signed up to be a pro pro
- 19:24athlete and there's a chance you could get traded.
- 19:28Don't start crying about having to move your family when that's
- 19:31what you signed up for. But it's really hard.
- 19:36I got to be honest with you, I liked much more, many more than
- 19:42I disliked. Well, you mentioned you don't
- 19:45want to be threatened or being told that you have to be traded
- 19:49at the trade deadline. I remember Chris Jury a couple
- 19:52of years ago telling Goudreau before the trade deadline, I'm
- 19:56not going to trade you. I I know it's in the middle of
- 19:58the season. We're going to keep you.
- 20:00We'll move you in the offseason. And all of a sudden at the trade
- 20:02deadline, he moves Goudreau and Gujo was like, and I've I read a
- 20:07story that Gujo went up to Chris Drew and he said, listen, I
- 20:11never said I wouldn't do it. I said I might not do it.
- 20:14And and he lied to Goudreau and Gujo got traded.
- 20:18And it pissed off Goudreau because his family thought that
- 20:21they were going to be there in New York for at least the rest
- 20:24of the season and he didn't have to move.
- 20:25He was furiated. And it just it to me, it just
- 20:28tells me who Chris Troy is. Even personally offset or what I
- 20:32remember him as a player now as AGMI, just want to beat the hell
- 20:36out of him. I'm like, if he did listen, if
- 20:38he did that to me and I was Goudreau, I would have taken my
- 20:42stick and broken it on his face. That's what I would have done.
- 20:45I would say you did what? And I would have ran after him.
- 20:48I probably wouldn't have got another job, but at least I
- 20:51would have set myself up for a a media job in the long run.
- 20:55I don't know Chris personally. I do know his brother Ted, who I
- 20:58like very much, who's works for UBS and lives in Chicago and is
- 21:02the father of Jack Drury that plays on Colorado.
- 21:07But I, I don't know Chris. But what I'm really surprised at
- 21:10with Chris is he's a former player, a former captain, a
- 21:14former Stanley Cup winning player.
- 21:17You must have a lot better feelings for what players are
- 21:20going through than someone like me, I would think.
- 21:24And yet, you know, he's just treated players like crap a lot
- 21:30of the time. And that shocks me that, you
- 21:33know, a former player would do that to the players.
- 21:38I want to ask from the publicity standpoint, obviously the Ranger
- 21:40is making the letter itself. Obviously we talked about you
- 21:42didn't like the the retooling, the Christian reset, but the
- 21:45actual concept. I know other teams have done it
- 21:47with social media post. I think the sharks did it when
- 21:49they were trying to purge their core Ranger doing it twice
- 21:53though. Is it a little too much doing it
- 21:56publicly the way they're doing it?
- 21:58I think so. I think the, and I think that
- 22:00second letter basically was a, you know, was a copy of the 1st
- 22:05letter. It was, it was very similar to
- 22:09what they sent out the first time.
- 22:11And the first time it worked. I mean, they, they did it, they
- 22:13did it. They, they and they retool,
- 22:16rebuilt, redid, whatever, and ended up with a team that, you
- 22:21know, was very good, won the President's Trophy.
- 22:24I think it's, you've tried this trick too many Times Now.
- 22:28You're not going to buy this another letter.
- 22:30We get another letter like, come on.
- 22:33And the words are very similar. So I'm not sure where that order
- 22:37came from to do that letter. Maybe it wasn't Chris's idea.
- 22:41Maybe Chris was told, well, this worked for us a few years ago,
- 22:46let's do this again. Who knows, right?
- 22:50We don't. Know we are talking to former
- 22:51Rangers and Islander Stanley Cup winning general manager Neil
- 22:54Smith and I I could probably bet that Chris Drury had something
- 22:59behind it. I I've just taken, you know, if
- 23:02I'm playing dice or something or I'm playing craps, I'm probably
- 23:06going to guess the right number on this one.
- 23:08Baby. I I, I would.
- 23:10But Speaking of greatness, Matthew Schaefer has been as
- 23:15good as it gets. I mean, this guy has been
- 23:18sensational. He was the number one pick.
- 23:20I was questioning it because I wanted the the goal scorer Misa,
- 23:23but I'll take it back. I don't know why I did it.
- 23:26I he also didn't play a lot of games last year, so I didn't
- 23:29know who really Matthew Schaefer was until the season started.
- 23:32This kid is going to be the best defenseman in the NHL probably
- 23:38in the next two years. He's special.
- 23:40There's something about him that drives players to play with him
- 23:43and want to play with him. What do you know about Matthew
- 23:46Schaefer? I'm sure you've met him before
- 23:48or you've had a conversation with him.
- 23:49What do you what do you think of him?
- 23:51I I think the world of them, I've seen him play, being at UBS
- 23:54Arena, I'd say it whatever at least 20 times this season and
- 23:59he's got speed that's great. He can go up on the play and
- 24:03still get back, can defend. He's got great instincts with
- 24:07the puck. He's great on the power play.
- 24:10I, I think he is another Lane Hudson and Kale Mccarr and and
- 24:17Quinn Hughes type player. I think he's in that category
- 24:20with those 3 great guys. And I think two or three years
- 24:23from now, maybe even less, maybe next year, he's going to be
- 24:26right in the conversation for the, for the Norris Trophy.
- 24:30I think he's that good. I think he's going to be
- 24:32fantastic and I, I don't see, you know, you're always looking
- 24:36when you're a hockey guy for OK, what are the, what are the
- 24:40downsides of this guy? Where is he weak?
- 24:42Is he is he weak defensively? Is he weak physically?
- 24:45Is he scared? Does he not have a good shot?
- 24:48Can he not turn? He can do everything.
- 24:51He, he, he is good at everything and his maturity is off the
- 24:55charts, which of course is shouldn't be something that is
- 25:01surprising because to be that good at 18, you've got to be
- 25:05really mature. And as that, just like Maclin
- 25:08Salabrini, the one thing that everybody says about him at 19
- 25:12playing for Team Canada was his maturity as a, as a person,
- 25:16he's, he's well beyond his years.
- 25:18So, and I think that's the same with Matthew, Matthew Schaefer.
- 25:22I think the best thing that ever happened to the New York
- 25:25Islanders in the last 20 years is that they won that lottery
- 25:29last summer. And by the way, it was a
- 25:31sensational lottery because that was one thing.
- 25:34And everybody takes shots at Gary Bettman.
- 25:36I say it a lot. Gary Bettman is the best
- 25:38commissioner in professional sports.
- 25:40And a lot of people Boo him at the draft and he laughs, he
- 25:44smiles and it's cool when Gary Gary doesn't care.
- 25:47But I I think he's better than Goodell, Manford, all these
- 25:51guys, Adam Silver. Adam Silver let's the lead let
- 25:53the players run his league and they do and say whatever they
- 25:56want on on his platform. The Rodger Goodell is all about
- 26:00money and and the owners and he could screw everybody.
- 26:03He could care less. And Rob Manford's a complete
- 26:06moron, all right? This guy decided to do one thing
- 26:10and he said, you know what, you think that the lottery draft is
- 26:14fake or you think that everybody knows that who's going to go 1-2
- 26:18and three, I'm going to do it in front of the cameras.
- 26:21You're going to watch the lottery in front of your faces
- 26:24to see how lucky A-Team can get. And it was amazing.
- 26:28I, I think that every single league and I believe football
- 26:32should be doing a lottery like this eventually too.
- 26:34I think it all should be like that.
- 26:36You got to earn and get lucky in the lottery.
- 26:40I think what Gary Bettman is doing for the NHL is amazing.
- 26:44What are your thoughts to Gary Bettman and the transition when
- 26:48you were the the GM of the New York Rangers and you were GM in
- 26:51the NHL to now? I've seen Gary come into the
- 26:54league. I was already there as GM of the
- 26:55Rangers when he came in in 1992, and it was a guy from the NBA.
- 27:00And of course, the NHL was concerned about marketing and
- 27:04getting more revenue streams and the league becoming more
- 27:09valuable as the NBA was. And I've watched him since 1992
- 27:14grow franchise values like Jack and the Beanstalk.
- 27:18I mean, it's unbelievable. And you know, I don't like all
- 27:21the expansion. And the reason I don't is 'cause
- 27:23I'm a, I'm a hockey purist. I'd rather see their less teams
- 27:27and better players than more teams and watered down players.
- 27:30But nevertheless, we've got hockey now being played in
- 27:34places where nobody ever thought about hockey before, and we've
- 27:38got players coming out of different locations developing
- 27:41in places like Scottsdale and Vegas and other places.
- 27:45We never believed that a hockey player could come out of there.
- 27:47So, and that's all due to Gary Bettman and his ability to make
- 27:54franchise values grow. And, you know, revenues have
- 27:57gone up exponentially. The players should love Gary
- 28:01Bettman because it's it's Gary that has spearheaded the revenue
- 28:08for the National Hockey League going up the way it has.
- 28:11So I don't know how he could possibly have done a better job
- 28:15than he's done for the job description that he had.
- 28:19And like, honestly, like his job description was Gary, you know,
- 28:24move us up into up in and let us make more money so that we can
- 28:30be a bigger thing. We can get better network
- 28:33contracts, we can do better. He's done it all.
- 28:36He's done. He's spearheaded all of that.
- 28:38So I, I'm right with you. I don't know how anybody could
- 28:42criticize the job that he's done.
- 28:44You look at the league now, the NHL, and like you said, there's
- 28:47a lot of expansion and they're maybe thinking about bringing
- 28:50another team to the league in the near future.
- 28:55The Corbec Nordique's were to me a team that I really, I love
- 29:00their jerseys. When I was a kid, I always loved
- 29:03the blue and the white and, and, and I don't know if anybody's
- 29:06been to Corbec. It is a beautiful, beautiful
- 29:09city. Do you see the NHL bringing back
- 29:12hockey from, you know, to the core back Nordiques?
- 29:15You know, it's possible. They really want a team back
- 29:18there. Again, I'm not sure that they
- 29:21have the base for the revenue that you need to have to be in
- 29:25the National Hockey League nowadays.
- 29:28But I think Quebec is longing for a team.
- 29:32You know, when the Avalanche wear those uniforms on those
- 29:35throwback nights, they wear the Quebec Nordique.
- 29:37You know, I think it's fabulous. I mean it, it just brings you
- 29:40back to those days that rivalry between the Habs and the
- 29:44Nordiques was something special. I'm not sure that the market can
- 29:49really handle the NHL team in 2026, but then again, I didn't
- 29:55think Winnipeg could handle an an NHL team and Ottawa's still
- 29:59going and they're a very small market.
- 30:02So you know what, who knows if the owners that want to get a
- 30:07team in Quebec have deep enough pockets, anything can happen.
- 30:11I mean, you look around Nashville, TN as a team, I mean,
- 30:16who'd have ever thunk it? But you, you when you go to
- 30:19Canada, I, I go to Canada a lot. Neil and me and my girlfriend,
- 30:22we, we love the city. We, we were in Montreal during
- 30:26the snow and we were swimming in the hot pools at our, at our
- 30:30hotel. I mean, it is beautiful.
- 30:32It really is a beautiful, beautiful city.
- 30:34All the cities over there, it's hockey, is God there?
- 30:38I mean, everything on the television is God.
- 30:40It's, it's hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey, hockey.
- 30:43And if you're a hockey fan, you love it.
- 30:44I love it. How could you not have a hockey
- 30:49team in every big city? I mean, hockey's everything over
- 30:52there. And, and Quebec is beautiful.
- 30:55It's a beautiful, beautiful city.
- 30:57I, I don't get it. I really don't.
- 30:59They should have never taken that away.
- 31:00I, I, I was upset when the NHL did that.
- 31:03Remember when Owen Nolan was drafted by the Nordiques?
- 31:06Remember that. Yes, yes.
- 31:08And I loved Owen Nolan. I I loved him as a player, loved
- 31:12his game. I loved his strong skating
- 31:14ability and it used his big body to get to the net.
- 31:17When they when they decided to move the Nordiques, it really
- 31:22upsetted me. It really did.
- 31:23I didn't like the way the NHL treated the Nordique fans and
- 31:28and everything what they stand for for the city.
- 31:31And I think it really hurt the NHL and the growth of of that
- 31:34particular area. It it did, but it wasn't the NHL
- 31:37movement, remember, it's that that was the owner, Marcella
- 31:40Boo. That's right, Marcella.
- 31:41And remember, we played the Nordiques in their very last
- 31:44game ever because we were playing them in the playoffs.
- 31:46I remember in 95I. Remember.
- 31:48Yeah. And at the Colossee, and it was
- 31:51Marcelo Vu that wanted to get out and he ended up selling to
- 31:56Charlie in in Colorado, who owned both the Nuggets and now
- 32:00the brand new Avalanche that was coming there playing in the the
- 32:03old arena. So it's really not the NHL that
- 32:06decides to move it. Now in today's day, the NHL was
- 32:11involved obviously in brokering the deal of Arizona going to
- 32:15Utah because the Arizona situation was had gotten really
- 32:19bad. But it's it's really up to the
- 32:23owner of the individual franchises to appeal to the
- 32:28league, to let them sell, to go someplace else.
- 32:30Neil, what's what's up with these names?
- 32:33The Seattle Krakens and the Utah Mammoths there's.
- 32:39No S. It doesn't make any sense.
- 32:41None of it does. I mean, I'm looking at these
- 32:44names and then the jerseys are cool, but it doesn't make sense.
- 32:47Are you what is a Utah Mammoth and a Kraken Seattle grunge?
- 32:52I would have called him it's a grunge city.
- 32:53I would have called him the Seattle grunge.
- 32:55That would have made sense. None of it makes sense.
- 32:57What are the what is the NHL doing?
- 33:00I mean, I'm sorry, not the NHL. What is the the owners of these
- 33:03teams doing and how they're building their franchise?
- 33:07It makes makes no sense. Neil how these marketing, I
- 33:09think they get, they hire marketing specialists and they
- 33:12come out. I'll fire them tomorrow.
- 33:13You know, we've, we've got, we've had the Tampa Bay
- 33:15Lightning for a long time. We've had the Colorado Avalanche
- 33:18for a long time. I've always hated teams with no
- 33:21S on the end. I, I really have, because I
- 33:23always think if you're a hockey player, you know, you want to
- 33:27play for a team with an S on the end.
- 33:28You want to say, I'm a Ranger, I'm a Canadian, I'm a Maple
- 33:33Leaf. I'm, you know, how do you say
- 33:36I'm a Kraken? I'm an.
- 33:38Akin Head. And three of those four teams
- 33:44could be, three of those teams could be in the conference
- 33:45finals. I'm all mammoth.
- 33:48That's right. I'm a mammoth.
- 33:51Fish had a good one on. Crack.
- 33:55All right, Dale, since the trader lines coming up, I'll
- 33:57finish off with this from the Rangers.
- 33:58From the sellers perspective, obviously Trocheck is probably
- 34:00going to be traded. We've heard Braden Schneider
- 34:02recently too, from their perspective, and also the
- 34:05Islanders from a buyer's perspective.
- 34:06What moves would you make if you were the GM's of their
- 34:09respective teams at that moment? Well, you know, it's hard to say
- 34:12with the Rangers because I like Vinny Trochek.
- 34:14I think he's a real good center iceman for that team.
- 34:17Great face off guy. Prove that in the Olympics.
- 34:21I don't know who's going to play for the Rangers if you keep
- 34:23trading all these guys. Never want to want to sign
- 34:26Centers for whatsoever reason. Yeah, I mean, maybe it's going
- 34:30to be the Hartford Wolfpack moving into the garden.
- 34:32But so I don't, I don't quite know what they're going to do
- 34:37there. But put the brakes on and try to
- 34:38keep the guys that are the best leaders in in the locker room.
- 34:42As far as the Islanders go. I think the Islanders have to
- 34:45judge very carefully how they do from here to the next 10 games.
- 34:51And if they, if they are thinking that, OK, you know,
- 34:57we're in a good position to perhaps, you know, make the
- 35:01playoffs and we can add something without costing us our
- 35:05future. I think they, they should do
- 35:07that because the fans at UBS Arena and that they really want
- 35:10to see the playoffs. They, they, they want to get,
- 35:13have hope. And the only way you give your
- 35:15fans hope is by making the playoffs.
- 35:17So I'm not saying they should alter their plan at all.
- 35:19They shouldn't do that, but they should.
- 35:22If they feel in the next 10 games that they're, they're
- 35:25right there and they're, you know that it's, it's going in
- 35:28the right direction. I think they should try to add a
- 35:31piece or two without giving up future assets.
- 35:35They have such a future with some of the players they drafted
- 35:38in this past draft. By the way, we are talking to
- 35:40former Rangers and Islander Stanley Cup winning general
- 35:42manager, our friend Neil Smith. Neil, we're going to play a
- 35:45quick game. You ready?
- 35:46I'm going to. So this is how we're going to do
- 35:49it. It's it's going to be really,
- 35:50really cool. I'm going to tell you a trade
- 35:52that happened in the past in the NHL that worked for both
- 35:56organizations when they did it. After I do it, I want you to
- 35:59give me one. And we're going to do 2 of them,
- 36:01all right? And it's just going to come to
- 36:03mind. It's going to pop into my head.
- 36:04Are you ready? Yeah, sure.
- 36:07All right. Number one, Peter Forsberg was
- 36:11traded for Eric Lindros. That changed the trajectory for
- 36:15both teams, for Philadelphia, obviously.
- 36:18And for the Colorado Avalanche, Peter Forsberg became one of the
- 36:22best two way players in the NHL. I he, he won scoring titles.
- 36:27I mean, he, he was great. He was a great player overall.
- 36:29Just couldn't stay healthy. Eric Lindros, one of the
- 36:31biggest, one of the meanest and one of the greats that we've
- 36:35seen escape. One of the fastest big men we've
- 36:37ever seen skate on ice. Really.
- 36:40I mean, the Legion of Boom, the Legion of Goon, whatever the
- 36:43hell they call themselves, the Legion of Doom, and they were
- 36:47the real Legion of Doom as far as I'm concerned.
- 36:49Those three guys in Claire Lynn Dross and something with an R at
- 36:53the end. I can't.
- 36:54Renberg. Renberg.
- 36:55That's right. I'm sorry.
- 36:56I am trying to remember. It's a past, man.
- 36:59I'm losing my mind. All right, so I'm going to go
- 37:02Eric Lindros for Peter Forsberg. That certainly was a trade.
- 37:06It, it was a lot more than Peter Forsberg, though.
- 37:08That's the only thing you got to know.
- 37:10There was a lot, there was a lot of money and there was a lot of
- 37:13other players. And it's amazing that how well
- 37:16the Quebec slash Avalanche did by getting Peter Forsberg and
- 37:20went on to win the Stanley Cups and everything.
- 37:24So that that was a trade though that that ended up changing both
- 37:28franchises for sure. All right, give me one for you.
- 37:31Oh boy. Off the head.
- 37:33I'll say there was a trade with Toronto and Calgary, Toronto and
- 37:40Calgary that traded. Doug Gilmore went to Toronto,
- 37:48which ended up being a staple of Toronto and, and leading them
- 37:53for a decade or so as, as a great player there.
- 37:58But the players that came back to Calgary helped them win that
- 38:04Stanley Cup in 1989. And I I now I'm lost for the
- 38:09names of who went back for Gilmore, but I think, but it was
- 38:12a trade that helped both teams. Calgary got a Stanley Cup out of
- 38:16it, but they lost the best player in Doug Gilmore.
- 38:19Oh. There it is.
- 38:20Craig Beruby was in the deal. There you go.
- 38:22Doug Gilmore da da, da da da and I think Calgary won with those
- 38:26guys. Gary Lehman was a fifty goal
- 38:28scorer later on in his career. So I I talk about that one.
- 38:35I mean, one of my trades that helped both teams that I don't
- 38:38like to this day was Tony Amante to.
- 38:41Chicago, you took that away. You took that away from.
- 38:45You end up winning the Stanley Cup with those two, but Tony
- 38:48Imani goes on to be a All Star. You took that away from me.
- 38:53Yeah, you stole that from me. That was my other one.
- 38:56Damn. Well.
- 38:57See Great Minds. Yeah, great minds think alike,
- 39:01as always. But Neil, we love you, man.
- 39:04You're you're you do such a great job.
- 39:06And why don't you tell the fans how they can check out your
- 39:09show, which is a great hockey show.
- 39:11You still haven't asked me to come on.
- 39:13I'm very upset. Nhlwraparound.com is our website
- 39:16and you can get all of our shows on there.
- 39:19We had just this week we did a Hall of Fame show with Mike
- 39:24Gartner. We had our first two active
- 39:27players on last week, which was James van Reemsteke and his
- 39:32brother Trevor van Reemsteke, the place for Washington.
- 39:35That was a lot of fun. We have a lot of fun shows on
- 39:38NHL wrap around being we're on every podcast a platform out
- 39:43there and it's Victoria Moran and myself and we have a lot of
- 39:46fun and hopefully say some things that people didn't know.
- 39:51So we say something that helps you more understand what's going
- 39:55on. Well, I don't know if you know
- 39:57this, but over the weekend we were ranked on Spotify and Apple
- 40:0156th in the whole country. So I don't know if you knew
- 40:04that. Wow, Congrats.
- 40:06Thank you. Great.
- 40:06We've been in the top 100 for almost a week.
- 40:09So and we've been we've been steady in the top 200 in the
- 40:13whole country. We're under OK, so our genre
- 40:16with Spotify now, but you have to pick a genre.
- 40:18So and being that we the football has the most podcast
- 40:23out there in the whole world. So we picked I saw, I told
- 40:26Speedy let's go football, but we talk all sports.
- 40:29So we're considered a football show, but we're really we talk
- 40:34baseball, we talk hockey and and that's why I think the YouTube
- 40:37channel is it. We'll do OK, but we we could be
- 40:39doing a lot better if we had a niche.
- 40:41And we, my guys, my producer Speedy and my executive producer
- 40:45Aaron, we go back and forth. We're like, well, you know,
- 40:47should we change it to the New York, you know, New York sports
- 40:50loudmouth And we're we're working on something right now
- 40:53because we are, we do talk a lot of New York sports, but it's
- 40:58harder on YouTube because you have to have a niche.
- 41:01You got to tell if you're going to talk hockey or talk just
- 41:03hockey. And we don't do that.
- 41:05And that's not something that we do.
- 41:06We want everybody to see that we're open to talk about
- 41:09anything. We could speak about anything
- 41:11and we have the knowledge to speak about everything.
- 41:14So it's different. YouTube's a different, but
- 41:17Spotify and Apple, everybody loves us.
- 41:18And I want to thank everybody that tunes in.
- 41:20I don't know if you know this Apple and Spotify have Apple and
- 41:24Spotify video now. Did you know that?
- 41:27No, I didn't know that. Well, that's going to help you
- 41:29guys. I.
- 41:30Better get on there. I better we should do some more
- 41:32video. You got to get on there, man.
- 41:34I listen. I'm going to try to help you,
- 41:36Neil. I'm.
- 41:37Trying to help. We need all the help we can get.
- 41:39We know it's a long game, right? It's a long game.
- 41:42You can't. Nobody gets into this and then
- 41:46all of a sudden is, you know, unbelievable the first, the
- 41:50first year. So we're we're sticking with it.
- 41:52It's enjoyable. We have a lot of fun.
- 41:54You guys, you're great anyways, Neil and you want to know
- 41:57something every time we have you on the show.
- 41:59I get a lot of guys on this show.
- 42:00I've interviewed every, I've done this for over 13 years, but
- 42:04our show is now like I, I've worked with different athletes
- 42:08and it, you know, some of them, they didn't work out.
- 42:11But I, I've worked with a lot of people and I've, but I've
- 42:14interviewed like over 5000 people in my time of doing this,
- 42:17going places, doing things, athletes, musicians, everything.
- 42:21When I meet people or even have a conversation with people, I, I
- 42:25want to know how much they know about their sports or how much
- 42:29they don't know about their sports and how.
- 42:30And then I say to myself, after I get off the phone with them or
- 42:33even get off a zoom call with them or anything with them, I'm
- 42:36like, man, how did that guy have a job in that sport?
- 42:40You know, I just feel like, so when I when I speak to you, I
- 42:45always, you know, when you won that Stanley Cup and they gave
- 42:48you the Stanley, I'll never forget the face that you had
- 42:51when they gave you the Stanley Cup.
- 42:52Even Mike Keenan's face, even Mark Messi, when he finally got
- 42:55handed that that trophy and he he was smiling and he went
- 42:59crazy, you know, and you built that team.
- 43:03You built that team. I don't think people understand
- 43:06that, that the Rangers thought they were going to win plenty of
- 43:09championships after 1994. That didn't happen.
- 43:12Guys, here it is. Watch this, watch it.
- 43:14When he gets the ball, watch it. Look at that smile.
- 43:17Look at him shake. I mean, come on.
- 43:20I know it was fantastic. It was something, it wasn't
- 43:23fantastic for me because at the time I I hated you, Neil, I
- 43:26hated you. You treated my favorite player,
- 43:29but I, I understand you now. And even talking to the Beezer
- 43:33after the fact, I never hated you.
- 43:36I just hated the fact that he couldn't be a part of that.
- 43:39And that was something that hurt me as a fan because I loved, I
- 43:43went to his camps when I was a kid, Van Beezbrook's camps.
- 43:45And I, I just loved him as a person and, and it was something
- 43:50that it really hurt me. But knowing you over the last
- 43:53couple of years and just getting to know you as a person, not
- 43:56only do I have a lot of respect for you, I think you're one of
- 43:59the most knowledgeable hockey minds that I've ever got a
- 44:04chance to talk to. And I appreciate you and I want
- 44:08you to, I do nothing but I, I want you to achieve all your
- 44:11goals. And I definitely would love to
- 44:13come on your show and just have conversations and laugh and, and
- 44:17you know, be a little crazy. But you guys, I've checked out
- 44:20your show, I've checked out some of the, the content that you put
- 44:22out there. You guys are sensational and I
- 44:25really appreciate you. Well, thank you very much and
- 44:28anytime you guys want me on here, you know, you know my
- 44:30number. Absolutely man and keep up the
- 44:33good work man And let's let's talk off air.
- 44:35Maybe we should talk off air because.
- 44:37Yeah, for sure, for sure. OK, great guys.
- 44:40Thanks. Neil Smith, man, Stanley Cup
- 44:42champion, New York Rangers 94. One of the great personalities.
- 44:48And I'll tell you this, I've interviewed Marc Messier, Adam
- 44:51Graves, Zubov. I've interviewed a lot of Sergei
- 44:54Namchinov. All these guys told me the
- 44:56mastermind of that team was Neil Smith, not Mike Keenan.
- 45:00I, I, I don't know. I, I guess Mike Keenan wasn't
- 45:03loved by everybody. I'm we all know he's not loved
- 45:07by Neil. I personally was there as a
- 45:11little kid at the Four More Years speech.
- 45:13My father worked for Giuliani. He got me into Gracie Mansion.
- 45:17I actually got to do all that. I think I may have said it once
- 45:19before on the show, but we all thought Keenan was coming back.
- 45:23We all thought this was going to be like a dynasty.
- 45:25It just didn't go that. Way no.
- 45:27And Neil wanted it, but Mike Keenan was hard.
- 45:30He was a hard ass. And if anybody knows the story,
- 45:33we've had Neil, we've had this conversation with Neil plenty of
- 45:36times and we're working. Nathan is working on getting
- 45:38Mike Keenan on this show and I would love to hear what Mike
- 45:43Keenan has to say about. Neil, you have to let me ask him
- 45:46and tell him that story. You got to let me as a kid.
- 45:49It's one of my earliest memories.
- 45:50I will. It just I remember when Mike
- 45:53Keenan came from the Chicago Blackhawks.
- 45:54I remember it. And I remember Neil Smith making
- 45:57that choice and bringing him in. And Neil made the right
- 46:00decision. It's not like he didn't, and the
- 46:03Rangers won because of it. But Neil Smith was the
- 46:07mastermind. He built that team.
- 46:08He made the trade for Steve Larmer.
- 46:10He's the one who drafted Sergey Zubov.
- 46:13He's the guy that was the mastermind and the creator of
- 46:16that Stanley Cup championship team.
- 46:18He made the move for Stefan Mato, Mato Mato, all those guys.
- 46:23SA Tikkinen. That was all the guys that he
- 46:27pulled off and made those trades at the trade deadline to get
- 46:30them here to help them win a Stanley Cup.
- 46:32So that guy was the guy that really redefined a championship
- 46:37contending team like the New York Rangers who only won what
- 46:42was it the the last championship before that 19401940 or
- 46:46something like that. I mean, and they were the.
- 46:47Worst team in the original 6 era. 19.
- 46:50They chanted it every place. I forgot, I forgot, dude.
- 46:54You know, when he was on, I said 1950.
- 46:56I was like, oh, wait a second, it was 1940.
- 46:58But I listen, man, I, I, I, I'm getting old there.
- 47:01I'm, I'm losing my mind a little bit, you know?
- 47:04You also haven't eaten any food in 24.
- 47:06Hours. That could be it.
- 47:07I mean, longer than that. Now it's it's longer than 24
- 47:09hours. I think about it, but shouldn't.
- 47:12They told you to fast for 36 hours.
- 47:14I don't. That's what they told me at
- 47:16midnight. They said you got to stop drink,
- 47:18stop eating. You could still drink water and
- 47:22you know, you could put some crystal light in it, but no
- 47:24purple, no blue, no red, all this garbage, no Gatorade at at
- 47:29any cost. So I mean, what are you trying
- 47:31to kill me here? I'm not, you know, I'm not, I'm
- 47:34not Gandhi here. I mean, I'm hungry, you know, so
- 47:38just kind of bothers down. Something to look forward to.
- 47:41Oh, dude, I guess turning. I promise.
- 47:43I promise you guys, I promise. Well, you turned 40 already.
- 47:46Stop. Stop.
- 47:47I know it's something for me to look forward to.
- 47:49I've been being. I feel bad for you because you,
- 47:51you deal with enough. I mean, you got diabetes.
- 47:53I mean, that's, that's the worst you can deal with.
- 47:56I mean, and there's no changing that I, I got to give you credit
- 47:59because me fasting for 36 or 40 hours is not as bad as having
- 48:04one I'm. Not gonna lie.
- 48:05There's some studies, you know, in China, they're saying they're
- 48:08curing it. So we'll type one.
- 48:10Hey, I'm fine. There's a lot of things going
- 48:13on. I was still, I actually coached
- 48:14a kid that had type 1 diabetes. He was a quarterback.
- 48:17We could not block and he got murdered every single time.
- 48:20And we we've had him run all the time too.
- 48:23And they're playing like D3 baseball or something like that,
- 48:25which is toughest kid I ever seen in my life.
- 48:27He had one of those old school ports like it's open in your
- 48:31body. Like I don't even have that.
- 48:34I I can't even imagine. And he had that ever since he
- 48:36was a kid. And some people look, you can
- 48:39play through it. We heard who did we interview
- 48:41was a Pittsburgh Steelers lineman Kendall Simmons.
- 48:43Kendall Simmons. Kendall Simmons said he had
- 48:46blood sugars of like 850 in pre season.
- 48:50I love Lisa. He should not be alive, but
- 48:53that's what he did. You know I'm fine, we're all
- 48:56good. But Errol football players
- 48:58circle jerk. Interesting.
- 49:00Stop topic. No, not that.
- 49:02Not that. All right, ladies and gentlemen,
- 49:04we call this the NFL. Whip around.
- 49:08No whip, whip, whip around. Make her squirt.
- 49:12Make me jerk. Welcome everybody to the Whip
- 49:19Around. We're going to get into some
- 49:22football news and notes. Let's get that music just a
- 49:26little bit lower. This one's a loud one, boys.
- 49:30The Bears are allowing middle linebacker Tremaine Edmonds to
- 49:34seek a trade. He's entering the last year of
- 49:38his four year, $72 million contract he signed in 2023.
- 49:43He's got a 13.9 million base salary with a 1,000,000 roster
- 49:47bonus, 17.9 million cap hit for an off the ball linebacker.
- 49:56It looks like they're trying to get rid of him.
- 49:57That's a big. Squeeze the cheese.
- 50:00Still one of the best in the league.
- 50:02He's a top 10 tackler in the league.
- 50:03Still one of those guys that a lot of teams, such as the team
- 50:10he used to be on, the Bills, they're letting Matt Milano go.
- 50:14Most likely he's been hurt too much.
- 50:17Not the same guy. He might come back there.
- 50:20He was too expensive for them to keep back then, now might not
- 50:23be. He's might be cut.
- 50:25If he can't be traded, he's not going to give up very much for
- 50:28him. Probably a seventh round pick.
- 50:29I I. There's the Giants, the Giants
- 50:32era before you go, I'm sorry, the Giants are probably going to
- 50:36cut Bobby O karaoke if they sign a guy, if they trade for a guy
- 50:40like Edmonds, obviously you're ripping up the contract.
- 50:43You're signing him to like a two year deal where it's like, you
- 50:46know, very low cap hit for this year and then you see if he's
- 50:51any good and then you give him a bigger contract after that.
- 50:54What do you think about Tremaine Edmonds and the Bears deciding
- 50:58to let him go? It makes a lot of sense for
- 50:59Buffalo. I, I think Buffalo's the team.
- 51:02He's, he wants to go back and obviously it's not the same
- 51:05coaching staff, but Edmonds knows the way they want to run
- 51:09their defense and he fits what the, what they're missing.
- 51:13They lose Milano, they add Edmonds that that's a, that's
- 51:16really like a, like, it's a glove for that organization.
- 51:19It's a glove like, you know, Ace Fantora says as far as the, the,
- 51:24the Giants are concerned, I don't know if the, I, I know it
- 51:27makes sense for Joe Shane. He was, he was a part of that,
- 51:29that group that drafted him. I, I still think if they're, if
- 51:33they're going to bring in free agents that are going to fit,
- 51:35they got to make sure that it's a slam dunk.
- 51:38You can't make, you can't make a decision like this and say,
- 51:41well, we make a mistake. We bring him in or, or even even
- 51:45if he's a low cap hit. I don't know if the, I don't
- 51:48know if the Giants are going to want to do that.
- 51:49I think they're going to try to get a short thing here.
- 51:52They need corner help more than a linebacker.
- 51:55That's where I think the Giants need to look.
- 51:57If they have money and their free money, that's where you put
- 51:59all your eggs in the basket, not at a linebacker.
- 52:02So I'm going to say I'm going to sell the Giants thing.
- 52:04I'm going to buy the Buffalo Bills thing.
- 52:07Yeah, if the Bills can get at the price that you were
- 52:09describing, Fish, they could definitely make that work
- 52:10because they need a veteran guy that could be a defensive play
- 52:13caller. They have a lot of young
- 52:15safeties, a lot of young linebackers.
- 52:16Those are generally the two guys that are going to be the play
- 52:18callers. The Giants, I'm with Errol.
- 52:20I kind of want them to focus more on corner, the receiver
- 52:23obviously losing Wondell Robinson, you're going to need
- 52:24something to replace. Them Tate, yeah, they want the
- 52:28draft. In the draft, they look pretty
- 52:29good. Yeah, and you're not gonna,
- 52:30you're not going to replace it with, especially the new scheme
- 52:32with one linebacker, especially the team that plays a lot of
- 52:35nickel already. It's the kind of thing with the
- 52:36Bills, they already play a lot of nickel.
- 52:38So Edmonds would only be a cheap thing just for millenniality.
- 52:40All right, let's get into it. I'm hoping the Giants actually
- 52:44go get this guy personally, because the middle, the
- 52:46linebacker play has been so bad. I think a lot of it was
- 52:49coaching, but we'll see. Let's move on.
- 52:53This is a guy you brought up a second ago, Errol, and we have
- 52:56to talk about him because he might be on The Jets.
- 52:59Arvel Reese, Ohio State linebacker, sometimes edge
- 53:04rusher. I would say last year is
- 53:06probably 5050. He might have even played a
- 53:08little bit more edge than inside linebacker last year.
- 53:11But he can play both and he presents quite a whole bunch of
- 53:15problems for other teams, especially when you hear what he
- 53:19did at the combine today. It's ridiculous. 40 yard dash
- 53:24446 tied for first among linebackers and edge rushers.
- 53:296424132.5 inch arms shorter than average.
- 53:36Not really. Edge rusher arm length 9.5 inch
- 53:40hands pretty normal and above average.
- 53:43Listen to this 38 inch vertical 38 that's that's NBA 38 inch
- 53:53vertical 10/8 broad jump both of those top of all players in his
- 53:59category. The fact that he is 243 lbs now
- 54:03and they're saying that's how much he weighs.
- 54:05He's 64. I didn't think he was that big.
- 54:08I mean, he's big. He's a big man, He's a big boy,
- 54:12and he can run a 446 and jump that high and do all those
- 54:16acrobatic things. I don't see him going past #2 I
- 54:21really, I want. I like Bane and I like Bailey.
- 54:25I understand why everybody loves him.
- 54:27But when you hear this freakish numbers, I mean, I know the
- 54:31combo doesn't sell you, but it's freakish how big and how strong
- 54:35this guy is. I'm going #2 with him, I don't
- 54:39think I could argue that. I mean, 246, 243, whatever they
- 54:43say he was that. That's freakish.
- 54:47Yeah, and I always. It was 240-1241.
- 54:50I always had him pretty far ahead of Bailey anyway.
- 54:53I think Bailey played with a lot of good talent around.
- 54:55Not that Reese didn't. He obviously Ohio State loaded
- 54:57as well, but I think his versatility in so many different
- 55:00positions is a lot that you have to factor in and now you have
- 55:03the athleticism scores to go along with that kind of thing.
- 55:06I think this is definitely a #2 pick worthy.
- 55:08I like Bane a lot too. I think Bane should go #3 right
- 55:10after that if Mendoza goes one. But this is definitely proving
- 55:13like the versatility fish you talked about ICS Simmons
- 55:15earlier. I, I versatility isn't as much
- 55:17of A concern for me with these off ball, with these pass
- 55:20rushing linebackers more the off ball in the state because you
- 55:22can. Concerning these guys with that
- 55:24athletic ability, you get a spin move.
- 55:26I mean, you're going to be a Micah Parsons.
- 55:28I mean Michael Parsons, they, they had questions about him
- 55:31when he came into the league, his arm length and all this
- 55:34other stuff. And look how good Michael
- 55:36Parsons. And they're very similar player
- 55:38prototypes in terms of their skill.
- 55:39Sets. He's bigger than Michael
- 55:40Parsons, I know that. And that's why I'm saying I'm
- 55:42not as worried about that. And fish, this is coming from me
- 55:44that I really liked Isaiah Simmons at the time out of the
- 55:46draft. I thought he was another honey
- 55:47badger. But it seems like those types of
- 55:49ones are the more concerning, not as much the pass rusters
- 55:52like Reese. I'll just say this before we
- 55:54move on from him. Obviously this the the combine's
- 55:57probably going to make this decision for everybody.
- 56:00But for me, like I, I still would be very interested in
- 56:04Bain. Bain is like a true talent.
- 56:07If you're playing a 3/4, Reese can terrorize, but I think he
- 56:11has to play in a three four. I think you can put Bain in any
- 56:14defense at all along the line and he would be an awesome D end
- 56:18or he could play in the 3/4 as an edge rusher.
- 56:21I don't know if you want to have Reese playing middle linebacker
- 56:24in a four three, right? That's not really a value place
- 56:27for a guy of his caliber. So I think he's a little bit
- 56:30more scheme dependent than a guy like Bane.
- 56:31But hey, I think you're going to be happy with these guys one way
- 56:35or the other. Errol.
- 56:37Next story Kyler Murray, Potential Jets quarterback Kyler
- 56:42Murray. Not happening.
- 56:44There was a story that, you know, the GM, Monty Austin Ford
- 56:48said that they were talking to Kyler.
- 56:51You know, they've had good dialogue.
- 56:53That was the, quote, good dialogue with Murray since the
- 56:56season ended, Murray said that's never happened.
- 57:00Apparently, there's been no contact between Kyler Murray and
- 57:05the Cardinals. And it's just all but a given
- 57:10that he's moving on and they're probably going to try to replace
- 57:13him with a veteran this offseason, be another one of
- 57:16those teams next year by and for one of those top quarterbacks,
- 57:19unless they take a shot at one of these guys this year.
- 57:21Errol Kyler Murray, little undersized, built, you know,
- 57:25he's built kind of like a tank. He's not like slight in frame,
- 57:28but a little short. And we know his biggest thing
- 57:31that everyone knows about him. Likes to watch, doesn't watch
- 57:35the lot, doesn't really like to watch tape, likes to play Call
- 57:38of Duty maybe a little too much. What do you think about that as
- 57:43a potential next quarterback for you?
- 57:45It's not going to happen. I don't know what you're you're
- 57:47drinking. If you're drinking something,
- 57:49keep drinking and it's not going to happen.
- 57:51There's no way that Kyler Murray will be the quarterback of the
- 57:54New York Jets. And here's the reason why.
- 57:57Aaron Glenn does not want these prima Donna players in his
- 58:01locker room. He knew Aaron Rodgers was, he
- 58:04got rid of them and Justin Fields was a yes man type of guy
- 58:08and it it didn't work. But that's what he wants.
- 58:12Kyler Murray would be somebody that there is no way in hell
- 58:16Aaron Glenn is going to deal with in the locker room.
- 58:18The guy doesn't like people, people don't like him.
- 58:21Kyla Murray is not a fit for the New York Jets.
- 58:24I'm telling you right now, that's never going to.
- 58:25Happen. No, not in New York.
- 58:27You can't have that kind of thing.
- 58:28This egomaniac type quarterback, these guy that has really big
- 58:31good leader since his first two years in the league.
- 58:33And again, I think The Jets are not a quarterback away.
- 58:36They don't want to have that kind of drama there.
- 58:38And the Cardinals, I think they're stuck both ways.
- 58:40Like Kyla Murray's going to be stuck.
- 58:41They're probably going to have to cut him for much more than
- 58:43awesome or it's not looking good either by saying oh I didn't
- 58:45call him, oh I did call him. That's not a guy for one that
- 58:49should have barely kept his job as AGM either.
- 58:51Yeah, I was going to say, how does that guy still have his
- 58:53job? He got the coach, got fired,
- 58:56everybody knew it. That roster is not good.
- 58:58So here's the deal. If they cut Murray before June
- 59:021st, it's a $54.7 million cap hit, dead cap hit.
- 59:07If they trade him and get like, you know, like I guess a very
- 59:11late round pick, probably it's a 37.2 million save in cap space.
- 59:18So it looks like they're going to be trying to shop him to
- 59:21somebody. But I don't know who's taking on
- 59:24that deal because you can't, you'd have to, you know, RIP up
- 59:27that contract and give him a new contract.
- 59:29I just don't know like where he's going to go.
- 59:32They're going to either have to keep him and deal with a really
- 59:35ugly situation this year over there, or they're going to cut
- 59:39them and take a $55 million hit this year and they're not firing
- 59:43their GM. Maybe they do fire them if they
- 59:46have to take that cap they're. Going to have to do like one of
- 59:48those like weird mid season situations like you saw The Jets
- 59:50do with Mccagnon and stuff like that and just do it right after
- 59:53the draft. They're really stuck.
- 59:55Yeah. Oh well, here's one that this
- 59:57might not be more than any just bluster, but there was a story
- 1:00:02out that that they're thinking about trading CJ Stroud.
- 1:00:08Yes, CJ Stroud, the second overall pick from a couple of
- 1:00:11years ago, rookie of the year hasn't been as good since,
- 1:00:14right? But obviously playoff team this
- 1:00:17year it won led by that defense, though.
- 1:00:20Here's some of the the stats and some of the value.
- 1:00:24He's got a very low base salary and he will have a fifth year
- 1:00:28option around 27,000,000. So they have two more years of
- 1:00:31control of him if he was to be traded.
- 1:00:34But of course, you know, Chairman Cal McNair, you know,
- 1:00:40is questioning the leadership. So this one looks like the GM
- 1:00:46who said it's that's moronic. Nick Casario.
- 1:00:49We're not trading the guy. He's going to be playing
- 1:00:50quarterback for the Texans. But we've heard some things
- 1:00:53about this owner in Houston over the years, Mr. McNair, and he
- 1:00:58does not like Shroud and his leadership.
- 1:01:01Although the team has officially distancing themselves from their
- 1:01:06owner's comments. I am not a big believer that the
- 1:01:11owner should be involved with the the football or even any
- 1:01:16kind of operations, but it seems to happen with the the Cowboys,
- 1:01:20it happens with The Jets, it happens with the bad teams.
- 1:01:24The Texans are a good team. They have a very good run
- 1:01:27organization and and they're very well run oil machine.
- 1:01:32CJ Stroud has not looked good in the playoffs.
- 1:01:34He hasn't, I'm sorry, he hasn't. He's been a good regular season
- 1:01:37player. In the first half this year he
- 1:01:40wasn't as good as he was in the second-half.
- 1:01:42He played very good football in second-half.
- 1:01:43He was one of the reasons why his team made the playoffs with
- 1:01:46the defense and the front seven. I'm going to tell you this right
- 1:01:50now. CJ Strout is an optional guy you
- 1:01:55could trade. There is no way this offseason
- 1:01:57they're moving him because first of all, there is no quarterback
- 1:02:02in this year's class besides Mendoza.
- 1:02:05So I'm not betting on anybody. You can draft or you can nitpick
- 1:02:08on who's going to fit and even the veterans that are going to
- 1:02:10be available, you're going to tell me that Kirk Cousins is a
- 1:02:13better fit than him? It doesn't make sense.
- 1:02:15None of them. Kyler Murray.
- 1:02:17You want Kyler Murray there I I not a chance.
- 1:02:21None of the guys that are available make any sense unless
- 1:02:25they have their backup quarterback who I I actually
- 1:02:28like to be their their future. And Mills, Davis Mills, I, I
- 1:02:32don't think that's happening. I expect him to keep his job.
- 1:02:36He stays with the Texans. It's.
- 1:02:38Ridiculous. Yeah.
- 1:02:39Unless you can get two first round picks from a very
- 1:02:41desperate team, like, I really can't see this kind of thing
- 1:02:43happening. And there's only a few team,
- 1:02:45maybe the Vikings, maybe the Steelers.
- 1:02:47They don't think Ayer Rodgers will come back.
- 1:02:49Unless you get that kind of offer, you're not trading him.
- 1:02:52And we talked about the Texans in the past with DeAndre Hopkins
- 1:02:54having a problem with their ownership.
- 1:02:56Andre Johnson's had problem with their ownership.
- 1:02:57It looked like they were finally stepping away for a while and
- 1:02:59now all of a sudden you're trying to put your nose back
- 1:03:01into things. This is a really good young team
- 1:03:04that you don't really want to mess with things.
- 1:03:05And he said, look, there are other players, they're going to
- 1:03:07want to get contracts soon, and you're going to make them all
- 1:03:10unhappy. Yeah.
- 1:03:10You don't want to have to revert to that kind of thing again.
- 1:03:13Ownership McNair. You would think you would
- 1:03:16wouldn't say something like that.
- 1:03:18It just hurts the value, even if you aren't going to keep them.
- 1:03:20It's just pretty dumb. But there are some dumb owners
- 1:03:23out there that have lots of money.
- 1:03:25One of the dumbest things we saw a couple of years ago was giving
- 1:03:29Kirk Cousins 40 million a season and then drafting Michael Pennix
- 1:03:33only to obviously go with Pennix.
- 1:03:36It got the general manager fired.
- 1:03:39They're going to cut Kirk Cousins.
- 1:03:40It was announced by the start of the league year on, I believe
- 1:03:43it's the 11th of March, so it'll be right before that.
- 1:03:47They're going to take a dead cap hit of 35 million, but they're
- 1:03:51definitely cutting him. He's the best veteran
- 1:03:54quarterback on the market. I was kind of joking with the
- 1:03:57Kyler Murray stuff before, but Kirk Cousins is definitely a guy
- 1:04:01The Jets are going to be looking at, as well as probably every
- 1:04:05team that is in the same position pining for that next
- 1:04:09quarterback, next year. Perhaps they have draft capital.
- 1:04:12I think Kirk Cousins is has been really destined to go to the New
- 1:04:16York Jets the last couple of years.
- 1:04:18They've fallen short and probably at the tail end of his
- 1:04:21career for it that it to work. But I, I think Kirk Cousins
- 1:04:25makes a lot of sense in the Frank Wright offense, especially
- 1:04:30Frank Wright wants to get somebody in a veteran guy that
- 1:04:32can run his offense and understand the, the verbiage.
- 1:04:35It's a lot. And I, I think Kirk Cousins is
- 1:04:38smart guy. So I think it makes a lot of
- 1:04:41sense for the New York Jets. But there are other teams
- 1:04:42looking for a quarterback. Pittsburgh could be looking for
- 1:04:45a quarterback. Maybe Kirk Cousins goes to
- 1:04:46Pittsburgh. If Pittsburgh decides to bring
- 1:04:49in a rookie quarterback in the first round, AKA Mr. Alabama,
- 1:04:53that could happen. But Simpson is not going to be
- 1:04:56starting no matter where he gets drafted in the first round.
- 1:04:58He's going to back up somebody, a veteran guy.
- 1:05:00So I'm going to go Kirk Cousins to The Jets.
- 1:05:03I don't see him going anywhere else.
- 1:05:05I'll be very surprised if he goes maybe Miami if they can get
- 1:05:09rid of Tua and I'm hearing they're going to have to really
- 1:05:13cut bait with Tua $90,000,000. That's a lot of money, man.
- 1:05:16I I don't see it happening so. Yeah, I think The Jets or the
- 1:05:19Steelers, I think either one of those make a lot of sense.
- 1:05:21The Steelers obviously if they don't get Aaron Rodgers and
- 1:05:23they'll they'll drag it out all, he'll probably drag it out like
- 1:05:25did last year. So that probably lessens their
- 1:05:27chances compared to The Jets just because of the way they
- 1:05:29operate. But yeah, The Jets make a lot of
- 1:05:31sense. Frank Reich when he was in
- 1:05:32Indianapolis, probably outside of the one year they had went a
- 1:05:34lot of these pocket presence quarterbacks with Matt Ryan and
- 1:05:38Kirk Cousins kind of fits that bill.
- 1:05:39He's aging right now. He's we talked about it last
- 1:05:42year, kind of having a borderline Hall of Fame case.
- 1:05:43So he's going to want to prove something and I think he does it
- 1:05:45with a chance where I don't think anyone has any
- 1:05:48expectations for him. All right, well, that is another
- 1:05:51episode. Of the whip around, we'll
- 1:05:54probably update you once a month in the offseason, every few
- 1:05:58weeks on the NFLI. Hope you enjoyed our trip.
