A mysterious sign at Fort Fisher reads “Old River Road from Wilmington — Dead End Do Not Enter,” but it’s not the road you think. This historic route, once called Wilmington Road or Federal Point Road, snaked through sandhills and past landmarks like the Cameron Art Museum, following the old river path to Carolina Beach. Before Snow’s Cut was built in 1931, it crossed Rocky Run — now part of Dow Road — and still leaves traces today, preserved in earthworks and off Piner Road, whispering tales of journeys long forgotten.
