- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Welcome to the Seeking Approval Podcast.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: I'm Dr.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Chris Swelzer from the Iliad Baptist Church.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: You know, life moves fast, and faith is coming to be real.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I want to take some time and slow down with you and have some honest conversations from the Word of God about daily life.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: So join me here today on Seeking Approval.
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Ever notice there's some people that can just walk into a room full of people, strangers, and within five minutes it's everybody's best friend.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: But then there's other people who are in a crowded room of people and it they seem so uncomfortable.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: Conversations are so hard.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Maybe you're one of those people.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I don't know which one you may fall in the category of.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: I know for me personally, I'm on the quiet side.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I know that you would think that being a pastor, being in front of you know groups of people multiple times a week, being in leadership most of my life as far as uh with the coaching experience and that.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: And then on top of that, you know, uh doing podcasts and uh things of that nature, that you know, this guy loves to be in front of people, and really I don't.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Um I I'm in the rest of my life when I get in a in a group of people, I'm very quiet.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Uh if I'm not supposed to be the leader.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: Uh and even at my church, when we have uh you know church functions, uh, you know, cookouts and things of that nature, uh, I literally stand off to the side.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm I'm very standoffish.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: I stand off to the side.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Um I I don't want to, you know, I want the people to interact with each other, and I know that as the leader, if I'm around, you know, people will want to, you know, want me to be at their table, and so I don't I try not to sit at anybody's table so I don't you know leave anybody out.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And I try to I try to make myself accessible.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: Um, but I I let the people be around the people in those times.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: So I'm I fall in that category.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And even in other uh situations where I'm I'm acting in my everyday work life, um, when I'm in a group of people, I I stay quiet unless I'm I'm called on or asked you know to interject.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, I may you know throw in a you know a a joke or a funny comment every once in a while is more of an icebreaker or tension breaker, but I really don't say a whole lot.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: And I read an article the other day that spoke to this and uh thought it was very interesting because it gave seven steps uh to the people in that uh situation.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: The article, I got the title here in case you wanted to look it up and read it.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: It's uh the title is Psychology Says People who are quiet in groups but deeply talkative one-on-one, aren't shy.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: They're operating from one of the seven social processing styles that most people mistake for discomfort.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: And that's that's the truth.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: I'm not uncomfortable in a large group of people, uh, but I am quiet in a large group of people.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: But one-on-one, like in this situation, and really it's just me and a microphone, uh, and I'm just imagining talking to a person, it's different.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Uh, when I'm with my wife, it's different.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Um so I looked at these seven um steps or the seven different processing styles.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: I'll just give them to you real quick.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: Number one, uh, these people tend to filter before they speak.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Uh two, they're tracking uh uh each mind in the room, seeing how other people are working and operating, what they're saying, what where they're standing, what you know, things like that.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Number three, they're having conversations internally before they have the conversation externally.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: I can agree so far, these three I can 100% agree with.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And you're you may be sitting out there going, that's exactly what I do.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: And then there are some people, there are some people who just shy, don't get me wrong.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: Number four, uh they tend to sync to one person at a time because that personal bond is more important than the group bond.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: And I agree with that.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Uh number five, they edit uh they edit before the listener hears.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: So in other words, you try to work things out before you say it out loud.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: It kind of goes back to having that conversation, you know, in your mind first.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Uh, number six, they need to trust before uh they'll engage.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: That is very true.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Um trust is a big thing.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: And then number seven, this was an interesting one.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Uh that that really was like one of those, yeah, that is true.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: You end up mirroring uh whoever is across from you.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: And it's hard to mirror whenever you have a large group of people.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And and I read that at first, I was like, no, I don't do that because I don't I don't adjust who I am because of who I'm around.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: But that's not really what that mirroring meant.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Mirror that mirroring it was talking about that uh you you feel the need to be what the other person needs.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Um and that was uh when I looked at it that way, when I read deeper into that, I was like, that is true, and that really falls into pastoring because um, you know, uh even Paul even said that you know, we try to we try to be everything to all people, you know, we try to be all things to all people.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Uh and if somebody's needing, you know, a friend, if they're needing a confidant, if they're just needing a shoulder to cry on, or whatever it is, you feel that and you want to be able to mirror what they're needing.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: And I read that article and I thought, man, this is absolutely, I mean, it is it is like nail on the head across the whole thing.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: But a lot of times, um those people like myself or maybe you uh or maybe you know somebody like this in group settings, uh, they'll get mistaken for shy.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Uh and I'm definitely not shy.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: I just um even when I was younger, uh I was not the I wasn't the class clown or the loudest one in the room.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Uh I was at home.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Uh my mom will tell you that.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: I was at home, but not when I got in crowds.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: And uh so a lot of times they're they're you know it's they're mistaken for being shy or uncomfortable.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: Uh and maybe uncomfortable might be the closest thing.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but uh I I wouldn't say that it's uncomfortable in a bad way.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: It's just when you're in that room of, you know, that crowded room of people, you're not comfortable engaging with everybody all at once.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: Um so there is, I guess, a level of uncomfortability with it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: But being shy or having this these personalities is is not a bad thing.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Um the the bad part about it is how you're perceived by other people because uh you are perceived, and I can I can speak to this wholeheartedly, you are perceived as being unkind, unfriendly, non-engaging.
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: And and all those, you know, can they appear to the believer, to the to the other person who believes it to be to be true, um, because perception is a lot of uh a lot of people's reality, unfortunately.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: Um when I say that, I I did a uh an episode on perception versus reality.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: I think it was a two or three-part session.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: You can go back and check that out.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: But uh the simple way I try to explain perception to people is the thermostat on the wall.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: The thermostat on the wall may say that the temperature in the room is 72 degrees.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And to one person it's hot, to another person it's cold.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: To those, to those, to the reality to those two people is either hot or cold, but the actual reality is it's 72 degrees.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Uh and that in in the biblical world, and uh that that comes into play a lot because there's some people who uh they don't like what the you know the word of God is saying to them.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: Uh some people like what it's saying, but the reality is this is what the word of God says.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: So your perception doesn't make it reality, the reality is what it says.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: Um but in in everyday life, if people look at me and say, well, he's not very engaging, he's not he's not he's not he's not not friendly and all those things, then that's the reality, that's their reality.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: That's not the truth, it's just their reality.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Uh, and they don't really know who I am because of that.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: In fact, the the the Bible has something uh in Proverbs 17, 27, it says, He that hath knowledge spareth his words, and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Now, I do find that very true that uh as I'm sitting in different and and a couple times a day I can think of right now in my everyday life, and I try not to talk about my my daytime work because people from daytime work, you know, they'll watch the you know what we produce through our church.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: So I'm, you know, I'm I've kind of got two things going on here, but in my daytime work, I will find myself sitting around and a group of people be having a conversation.
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: I'm usually sitting off over to the side and I hear things and I'm, you know, I want to interject in the conversation because I know something about it, but then I also have that idea of like, you know, all they'll think is that you're a no-it-all if you try to interject something about that.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: I did that not too long ago.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Uh some people were talking about getting a new roof uh put on their house, and the one person was like, Well, I'm gonna get a metal roof, and I don't know why I'll never have to worry about it again.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: And it just like, I was like, oh, that's not true.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: I I I don't want them, I don't want this person to make a you know a$25,000 decision without the knowledge of the metal roofs, that that's not the case at all.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Your metal roofs it has nothing to do with the metal, it's all about the fasters, those little screw heads uh and the washers on them is everything.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: And you may get you know eight, nine years out of those, and you have to replace those screws all the time.
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: Um anyway, uh, you know, I wanted and I did interject with that, and I could just like you could just feel it for me, like the people who are sitting around was like, you know, well, who do you think you are?
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: And it was just like, oh, and then I've you know, I kind of had to step back out.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: I was like, I didn't mean to get in y'all's conversation, I just thought I'd throw something out there.
- 10:21SPEAKER_00: So that's where it comes in to talk to looking at, you know, sometimes people who are quiet are trying are are processing all this information.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: I I sat there and processed while they were talking about the roof.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: I'm processing.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Well, do I should I say something about it?
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Because man, I'd hate for this guy.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: And I and I really did.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: I was like, I don't want this guy to you know pay out a lot of money for something that you know he's you know doesn't have a lot of knowledge on.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: And you know, we've you know done hundreds of those, and uh a friend of mine have done thousands of those, and we could tell you that, yeah, metal roofs are good, but you know, so a lot of times, you know, there those people like that are sitting there processing, well, should I say this, should I say that?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: And the conversation moves on before they can process whether they should say something, how they should say it, and they're having that conversation in their head to how you know how's it going to end up, you know, and all those things.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: And then the conversation moves on, and so by that time you're already out of the conversation.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: Now you're trying to pick up on the next conversation that's going on, and uh it makes a difference.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: So the the when you look at people that are uncomfortable um or you think they're uncomfortable or they're shy, uh that I mean, I guess those could be good descriptions, but it's not in a in a bad way in in like a situation like mine.
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: And then you got things that people are saying you just don't agree with, and you know, you don't want to interject the nose.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: But James 119 says, Wherefore, my beloved brother, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: So it's not uh, you know, a bad thing to do that.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: Proverbs 18 uh 13 says, uh he that answereth a matter before he heareth it is uh is it is folly and shame unto him.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: We all know those kind of people.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: I mean, we all know those people that as soon as you try to say something to them, uh you know, they they've immediately got a comeback, they've immediately got a response.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: Um I I just the other day uh I was making a comment to someone and the first word out of my mouth was no, you're wrong.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: It's like and it was one of those perception type things that um you know if you perceive something some way that's just how your perception works.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: And that you know, again, if it's uh just a nonsensical matter, I mean, why does it matter that somebody has a different, you know, perceives it different than somebody else?
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: Uh but um to have that, I I remember uh some years ago, um probably three years ago now, um our my my daughter, we had a uh basketball team, we traveled around playing in different places.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: We were over we were in West Virginia playing this week, certain weekend.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And so I went down early that morning.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Uh I used to get up at four o'clock every morning.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Right now I've actually been able to back it up to uh a little bit later in the morning now, so I'm getting up at about five o'clock.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: But I got up at four o'clock, I went down to the breakfast area and I sat and waited until you know they were going to open.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: But I got all my my church work, I was getting done that morning and just sitting there by myself over in the corner where I could plug my laptop up.
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: I was, you know, I wasn't in the main thoroughfare of where people would sit and eat breakfast and all that.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: Uh but uh this couple came down uh that was with our group and they sat down and they kind of had me trapped in the corner, and they got talking about scriptural things.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And I was, you know, just barely in the conversation, trying to keep doing my work, my Bible study that I was doing.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: And they got to talking about uh the Garden of Eden and vegetarian, they were they were both like very strict vegetarians and or sorry, uh uh they they were against vegetarian, they were both strict meat eaters.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And uh, so I'm just joking around, you know, trying to interject, you know, a little bit of humor because they it was a very serious conversation uh that they were at not at Joe, they were talking to me as well.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: And uh I said, well, you know, back in the in the garden, uh Adam, that's all he ate was uh was fruits and vegetables, so maybe that's what we'll let when we get to heaven.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: There might not be any uh red meat up there for us, you know, just you know, joking around like that.
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: And I'm actually kind of laughing whenever I say it.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: And man, she came right back at me and said the same thing.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: She was no, you are wrong.
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: They did they had completely different types of fruit.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: Their watermelons were like grapes, and their grapes were like watermelon in the garden.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I was like, Well, I don't know, I wasn't there.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: I have no idea what kind of watermelons they had in the Garden of Eden.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Uh I mean, but you know, she was very adamant to come back and say, No, you're wrong.
- 14:41SPEAKER_00: And sometimes, you know, people try to stay quiet because of that, that that confrontation that doesn't do anybody good, not listening before you speak, things like that.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: It can be very difficult.
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: Um, some people take time to try to notice the things that are going on around them.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Uh, and that's not a bad thing either.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: We're we're we're called in in scripture to to look at things um and and and process things.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: You know, we're not we're not just supposed to live our life on a whim of what's going on.
- 15:14SPEAKER_00: We are told in Romans 12, 15 uh to rejoice with them that rejoice and weep with them that weep.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: We're supposed to be engaged with the people around us uh and to see what they're doing and try to be you know part of that.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And and sometimes uh I catch myself trying to figure out, you know, is this a serious conversation?
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Is it you know, is this a time for jokes and and all that?
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: And uh, you know, we've all been in those conversations where it somebody read the room wrong.
- 15:42SPEAKER_00: You know, it's like, man, you know, read the room.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: You know, that was not the time for a joke uh or things of that nature.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, that happens a lot as well when you're trying to figure out you know what's the direction of the room, how what are people you know doing right now and saying.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: So I I say all that to say this, and this may sound a little, I guess a little scattered, um because there are people out there um that that struggle with this and they have a they have they deeply struggle with it.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: I don't struggle with it.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: Um I know that I have uh a personality that most people, you know, they just don't want to be around it all the time.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: And that's fine.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: I I understand that I'm uh I've been around myself long enough to know that.
- 16:31SPEAKER_00: And uh but the people who enjoy being around me, they they've seen the real, you know, that that real side of me because I've had time to get to know them and to build those relationships and be able to have those uh you know more endearing conversations with them uh and they've found out my true heart on things.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: Uh most people, if you're in the situation like I'm talking about, most people you probably spend your time wishing people knew the real you.
- 16:57SPEAKER_00: And that's where the big struggle comes in, uh, especially for somebody like myself, is I know that there's so many times I've walked away from a situation saying they have that they don't know me.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: They have no clue how much I really care.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Um, how much I and a lot of times what you'll find in those people who are quiet in those situations, uh there's there's usually an underlying factor, which is what I really want to get into at some point um uh with it, but there's really there's an underlying factor a lot of times why people are quiet in those situations, just to give you an idea.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it's uh because you're you're really concerned about you know the group of people that are there, how you'll be perceived, uh, you know, if you say something that might cause harm or damage, or you're really listening intently to what's going on in other people's lives or whatever, so you can engage with them.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: And again, by the time you process it all and and have everything worked out, they've already moved on in the conversation.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Then there's other people who are that way because uh they're uh doing a lot of judgmental thinking uh and they don't they don't want to uh insert, you know, because they think they know more and you're not you know worth their time inserting.
- 18:11SPEAKER_00: We we've all been around people like that.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: Um so this is not like a cookie cutter thing that everybody who's quiet is is like this.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: Uh there's different reasons.
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: And you know, uh for me when I walk away from a lot of those things, I mean I know that I will spend 30 years in the job that I'm in, my everyday job.
- 18:28SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm a full-time pastor.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: Uh but I've I've also got a you know my daytime job that I'm in.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: And I know I'm I'm on it where I'm I'm down to my last five years.
- 18:38SPEAKER_00: And I know that in five years when I walk away from this job, I don't think there'll be anybody that I've ever worked with that will know my true heart.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Um and uh part of that is because uh I never you know had time to get to know people.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: You say time.
- 18:54SPEAKER_00: I mean you you work with people you know for you know 10, 12, 13 years at one time.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: You just you there was never those opportunities to get to know people real well, and then when you do get to know people real well, then you realize that their intentions aren't the same as yours, and it becomes even harder to get to know people because then you become apprehensive about you know what will come of that.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: And I know that it'll be 30 years that I'll be in the job that I'm in right now, and I don't know that there'll be one person who will ever know my true heart for what I do and how much I care about it.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: And when I read that article uh about that, that really hit home with me, and maybe it does with you too.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: And and I know this is not a Bible study podcast, but it is hopefully helping uh somebody uh out there with with your everyday life and feeling awkward in those situations.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: And maybe you feel awkward for other reasons uh because you don't know what to say, and you know, people get awkward that way, but I feel awkward in those situations because of all really all seven of those reasons that was mentioned in that article.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I think I think she did a great job writing that uh article.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: Um but really because of all seven of those reasons is why I feel you know uncomfortable in those situations.
- 20:07SPEAKER_00: And now it's to the point of you know, 30 years and people aren't still aren't gonna know the real me.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: Um and it's uh it's it it's kind of sad when I look back on it.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Uh I hate it for um the people that I work with uh because I you know they never got to know the person that I know that I am and and the people around me know that I would I would do anything for people.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: I mean, I I would I I have given the shirt off my back.
- 20:36SPEAKER_00: Actually, just the other day I I literally gave my shirt.
- 20:40SPEAKER_00: I didn't think about that.
- 20:41SPEAKER_00: That's uh that's interesting.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Um it was a gentleman who he was it was one of those very cold days that we had here in uh October, and um he was struggling and uh I happened to have on a sweatshirt, one of my church sweatshirts that day, and um uh I gave him my sweatshirt.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: And uh you know, th most of the people I work with will never know that person.
- 21:06SPEAKER_00: And um and I guess when it's all said and done, that'll be fine.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, if I could go back and do it again, would I try to interject more?
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: Would I try to, you know, maybe not be as as awkward or as as you know processing as much in those in those moments?
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Probably could have helped in some situations, but I'd say I'd still end up, you know, you know, right where I'm at today uh with the same uh the same thoughts uh about it all because I don't know that I could ever truly uh get to know people that well in in group settings like that.
- 21:39SPEAKER_00: Um so anyway, maybe you're out there today, maybe that's something you're struggling with.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: Um I'll take you to um the one last verse I wanted to share with you.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: I thought it's really interesting verse out of Proverbs 20 and 5.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: It says, Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.
- 21:58SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you get you know around folks um who have uh you know a lot of understanding uh and who have seen a lot of things.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: I feel like in my life and in the plight I've had, I've seen a lot of things and helped people in a lot of ways.
- 22:12SPEAKER_00: It's either happened in my life or people's life that I'm trying to help.
- 22:16SPEAKER_00: And um there's a lot of lot of things that I you know would want to help people with uh and trying to draw it out, and then I'm trying to draw out from other people.
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: Um I think it's it is like deep water, and you know, sometimes it's hard to get to, uh, whether it's me trying to pull that from other people or whether other people are trying to pull it from me becomes very difficult.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: Anyway, I hope this has helped you today.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Uh if you have any other uh ideas uh that you'd like to hear uh hear discussed from a kind of a biblical point of view, uh or just uh from you know my own personal perspective uh on a topic like this one today, uh let us know.
