Latest / Vigilante Vibes Podcast / Ep. 265. Who is the Gray Hulk in Marvel Comics?!
Transcript
- 0:11Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks and non nerds in between.
- 0:13My name is Megan and I'm here with another character breakdown
- 0:16and it is a character that has been talked about quite a bit
- 0:20ever since the leaked Spider Man Brand New Day trailer.
- 0:24The actual Spider Man Brand New Day trailer was released, so I
- 0:28want to talk to you about this character.
- 0:29We're going to talk about the Gray Hulk.
- 0:31Back in May of 1962, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced the
- 0:35world to The Incredible Hulk #1 Lee's original idea was
- 0:39basically what if Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde got blasted with
- 0:42gamma radiation. He wanted Bruce Banner to
- 0:45transform into the Hulk at night and do all things.
- 0:48Bruce was way too shy, too nervous, too repressed to do
- 0:52himself. Fun fact, Hulk was originally
- 0:55supposed to be Gray, not green. The problem was that the 1960s
- 0:59printing technology absolutely hated consistency. 1 issue Hulk
- 1:04would look very Gray, the next he'd look like someone spilled
- 1:07printer ink on him, that whole thing.
- 1:10Eventually, Lee got tired of fighting the printing presses
- 1:13and said fine, make him green, and comic book history was
- 1:17changed forever. For years, most readers assumed
- 1:20Gray Hulk and Green Hulk were just the same guy with a paint
- 1:23job problem. Turns out, no, Gray Hulk is its
- 1:28own thing entirely. The giant green rage monster
- 1:31everyone knows is actually what's often called the Savage
- 1:34Hulk. So the Incredible Hulk all that
- 1:36the the green one? That is the Savage Hulk.
- 1:40According to later comics and later arcs and later stories.
- 1:43Especially in Immortal Hulk, Gray Hulk's origins go way
- 1:47deeper than a coloring error. He actually started forming in
- 1:50Bruce Banner's childhood as part of Bruce's dissociative coping
- 1:54mechanisms. You see, Bruce Banner has
- 1:56Dissociative Identity Disorder, or DID.
- 1:59His mind is split into different alters, like the Savage Hulk or
- 2:02the Gray Hulk. After years of abuse from his
- 2:05father, young Bruce basically decided he needed to become a
- 2:08man who could protect himself. Gray Hulk was that childish idea
- 2:13made in the flesh. Big, tough, fearless, completely
- 2:17unwilling to take crap from anybody.
- 2:19As the comics put it, he's essentially a child's idea of a
- 2:22man. Compared to Greenhulk, Grayhulk
- 2:25is less irritated and generally weaker.
- 2:29Whenever the big green guy is around, Grayhulk usually gets
- 2:32shoved into the backseat. Everyone is in the same car, but
- 2:34one has the steering wheel, and that's basically how it is in
- 2:38Bruce Banner's head. But every now and then, Bruce
- 2:41gets cured of being the Hulk, which happens way more often
- 2:45than you'd think. And that's when Gray Hulk gets a
- 2:47chance to grab the steering wheel.
- 2:49When he does appear, he often follows the old school Hulk rule
- 2:53where transformations are tied to day and night.
- 2:56Then things get even more weird because it wasn't already weird
- 3:00during a major comic arc. I believe it was in The
- 3:03Incredible Hulk #347 Greyholt gets hit by a nuclear explosion,
- 3:07fakes his own death, and through a series of very comic book
- 3:11reasons, ends up with incomplete control of their shared body for
- 3:15about 3 months. Naturally, he immediately runs
- 3:18off to Las Vegas. Because if you're a big giant
- 3:22Gray superhuman with identity issues, where else are you going
- 3:25to go? In Vegas, he falls in with a
- 3:28casino owning mobster who takes him under his wing.
- 3:31The Greyhulk gets a new name, Joe Fixit.
- 3:34The Fixit part comes from his job as a fixer, basically hired
- 3:38muscle who solves problems, usually by introducing them to
- 3:41his fists. Despite acting like a mob
- 3:43enforcer, he secretly retains a lot of Bruce Banner's
- 3:46intelligence. In fact, a fight with the Thing,
- 3:49Who's Ben Grimm, reveals he's surprisingly analytical and
- 3:53incredibly good at thinking on his feet.
- 3:55Later stories, especially, You know, Still Immortal Hulk, lean
- 3:58even harder into the idea that Joe is way smarter than people
- 4:02give him credit for. As for the name Joe, there's
- 4:06some old media reference buried in there somewhere, but Joe's
- 4:08mob boss mentor mostly says it's because Joe is his favorite grey
- 4:12ape, which is surprisingly affectionate by Mafia standards.
- 4:19Joe Fixit himself explains the difference best.
- 4:21He isn't the Hulk most people know.
- 4:23He's not the giant green rage baby.
- 4:26He's the part of Bruce Banner that acts on selfish desires,
- 4:29greed, lust, power, destruction, and all of the impulses Bruce
- 4:34normally keeps locked up. But unlike Savage Hulk, Joe
- 4:37isn't portrayed as dumb. Not even close.
- 4:40In fact, Gray Hulk is one of the smartest Hulk personalities
- 4:43around as Joe Fix It. He works as a Las Vegas mob
- 4:47enforcer, gets into endless trouble, and throws down with
- 4:50everyone from Spider Man to Wolverine and plenty of other
- 4:53Marvel heavy hitters. Calling Joe a hero is generous.
- 4:59He's usually somewhere between anti hero and outright villain.
- 5:02Most of his good deeds happen because there's money or power
- 5:06or freedom or some other personal benefit involved.
- 5:09If saving the day helps Joe fix it, then sure, he might save the
- 5:13day. Power wise, Joe still has the
- 5:17standard Hulk package. Super strength, speed,
- 5:19durability, and rage fueled power boosts.
- 5:23His strength grows with anger too, but nowhere near as
- 5:26dramatically as Savage Hulk's. He's weaker than the Savage Hulk
- 5:29physically, but far smarter and much more calculating.
- 5:33He also fully embraces the mob aesthetic, usually rocking a
- 5:37pinstripe suit, fedora, and enough attitude to fill a
- 5:40casino. So basically, he is a vibe.
- 5:45Unlike many Hulk incarnations, Joe has absolutely no problem
- 5:49with using guns if it gets the job done.
- 5:52And despite being considered one of the weaker Hulks, Joe has a
- 5:55habit of pulling off incredible feats anyways.
- 5:59At one point the United States government hired him to stop an
- 6:01asteroid headed straight towards Earth.
- 6:04Not just any asteroid either, it was supposedly the twice the
- 6:07size of Earth itself. Joe's solution?
- 6:10One punch. The asteroid was gone, the
- 6:12problem was fixed. And let's be clear, for a guy
- 6:15named Joe Fixit, that's pretty much the most on brand thing
- 6:18imaginable. So that is Joe Fixit.
- 6:22That is the Gray Hulk. I'm sure many of you have seen
- 6:26somewhere online where they're talking about the grey Hulk
- 6:29being in the Spider Man brand new day trailer.
- 6:31Who's who's to know. But if you're curious, I hope
- 6:35this answered any questions for you.
- 6:37So with that being said, I hope you liked this episode.
- 6:40I hope you will like and subscribe, and I hope you have a
- 6:42marvelous day.
