Transcript
- 0:00Coming up today on Mini Scroll, we're doing a mini deep dive
- 0:05into the stolen Lego Mormon Mafia YouTuber Patreon drama.
- 0:10Yes, all of those words will make sense later in this
- 0:15episode. Hi everyone, welcome to Mini
- 0:19Scroll, the daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the
- 0:22biggest stories from social media, the creator economy and
- 0:25the digital space. Every Monday through Thursday
- 0:27and sometimes Fridays like today.
- 0:30I'm your host, Lauren Meisner, the founder of the Australian
- 0:33youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:37Welcome back to. I was going to say mini scroll,
- 0:40but it's like a mini deep dive. Today someone in our Discord
- 0:44actually called it free for all Fridays because as we know,
- 0:47Fridays are always so random on mini scroll.
- 0:50I was going to do a regular mini scroll, like a three episode or
- 0:53a three story mini scroll, and then I knew this story was going
- 0:57to be probably the main story. And as I looked into it, I was
- 1:01like, this has to be the story. This is so insane.
- 1:06I've only seen it pop up for me since Patreon got involved,
- 1:10which is like at the very end. I can't believe I have not been
- 1:13seeing anything about this since Obviously there are publications
- 1:16that are covering it and people talking about it on Twitter and
- 1:19stuff, but I honestly don't know how I've missed it.
- 1:21So I'm really excited to bring you guys this full chronological
- 1:25breakdown, an explanation into what is going on with this
- 1:29$200,000 allegedly stolen Lego collection and how it involves
- 1:35what people are calling the Mormon Mafia a YouTube and now
- 1:40the CEO of Patreon. All right, before I get into it
- 1:43though, Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 1:45It helps us so much. It helps us grow.
- 1:47Please Spotify star rate US. And I promise if you guys are
- 1:49regular listeners, you'll know this week was a bit chaotic.
- 1:52Annabelle and I both had some like health stuff going on in
- 1:55our homes and we have the grants that we were doing.
- 1:58I was doing some public speaking, trying to run the
- 2:00business as usual. It was just like honestly crazy.
- 2:03So next week I promise we'll be much more normal and it is a
- 2:06public holiday on Monday. But to say thank you for
- 2:09sticking it out with us this past week and probably like the
- 2:12most random mini episodes ever, I am going to do mini skull for
- 2:16you guys on Monday regardless. All right, let's get into it.
- 2:18So in late May, YouTube Reckless Ben published the first
- 2:23installment of an investigation into the story of a man named
- 2:27Brian Mensel. Brian and his very elderly
- 2:30father had spent years building this extensive Lego collection
- 2:34which included a large number of Star Wars sets, and they
- 2:38estimated that the worth of this collection was around $200,000.
- 2:42Brian consigned the collection to the Utah headquartered Lego
- 2:45resale chain called Bricks and Men and Figs.
- 2:49Them being located or headquartered in Utah is
- 2:52important. However, it was specifically the
- 2:54Oregon location that he consigned this collection to.
- 2:59So I'm going to be referring to bricks and men and Figs as Bam,
- 3:02because that's what everybody's been calling them in all of
- 3:05these videos. OK, so Brian handed over his
- 3:07collection of Lego to the franchise in 2023.
- 3:11But essentially right after ownership of the store changed,
- 3:16Brian and his family now allege that the new owners claimed
- 3:19ownership of the entire collection of Lego.
- 3:22So essentially they wouldn't be paying the Mensel family for the
- 3:26sale of that Lego, even though that was the agreement when he
- 3:31passed on the collection to be resold by the store.
- 3:35The new owners of the store are named Joshua and Brandon.
- 3:39They are Mormon and they live in Utah.
- 3:41Remember that is where this is headquartered.
- 3:43And them being Mormon does become essentially important
- 3:47later in the story. So Ben explained in his video,
- 3:50Ben is the one who's making the YouTube videos.
- 3:52Reckless Ben, I feel like I'm going to keep clarifying who
- 3:54people are for you guys because the names, it's just like a
- 3:58bunch of like white guy names and it's gonna get really
- 4:01confusing. So Reckless Ben, the YouTube
- 4:03explained in his video that he had been trying to meet up with
- 4:07Joshua and Brandon in Utah. So he like went to Utah, brought
- 4:10his crew, like the production crew that's making his videos
- 4:13with him and doing the investigation and they went to
- 4:15Utah. He's trying to meet up with them
- 4:17to have a good faith discussion regarding the missing Lego.
- 4:22Ben was able to see Brandon. They didn't have like a
- 4:24conversation, but he was basically able to track him
- 4:27down. But Ben said he was unable to
- 4:29reach Joshua because Ben and his film crew were stopped by the
- 4:34police near Joshua's house for allegedly failing to stop at a
- 4:39stop sign. Then, throughout the
- 4:41investigation, Ben and members of his production team claimed
- 4:44that they were pulled over multiple times by the Utah
- 4:47police. For example, at one point,
- 4:50officers pulled Ben over and searched his vehicle after
- 4:53receiving a tip that it allegedly contained heroin.
- 4:56No drugs were actually found and eventually Ben was formally
- 5:01arrested by the Utah police after they had a search warrant
- 5:04for his Airbnb because the police received a tip off that
- 5:07Ben was the one who stole $200,000 worth of that Lego.
- 5:13So they searched and they didn't find the Lego, but they still
- 5:16arrested Ben and his crew. This is all late May, OK, like
- 5:21the last few days of May. So then in this investigation,
- 5:24Brian, the one whose Lego has been stolen, allegedly said in
- 5:28one of these videos that this is a Mormon conspiracy.
- 5:34Because many of the local police officers who have been doing
- 5:37like these pullovers and these arrests of Ben and his crew are
- 5:41members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Saturday Saints.
- 5:44And Brandon and Joshua, the new owners of the Oregon franchise,
- 5:48the BAM franchise, are Mormon too.
- 5:51So Brian believed that the Utah police were basically in cahoots
- 5:55with them to help get Ben off their back so that they could
- 5:59keep the $200,000 worth of Lego. These allegations of corruption
- 6:03are obviously unverified. However, as coverage of the
- 6:06situation spread over the past couple of weeks, the phrase
- 6:09Mormon Mafia began trending on X in relation to this Lego story.
- 6:13So that is where Mormon Mafia is coming from in this story is
- 6:17like the conspiracy theory that they're all in cahoots together,
- 6:20but it keeps going. So like I said, this is all like
- 6:23the last few days of May. So on May 28th, right before
- 6:26Ben's arrest. So Ben was arrested, I believe
- 6:28he was arrested on May 30th. So a couple days right before
- 6:31Ben's arrest, a couple named Chris and Benjamin.
- 6:35Different Ben, not the same as reckless Ben.
- 6:37I told you all these like generic white guy names.
- 6:39Benjamin and his wife. I believe they're married.
- 6:42I'm not sure either way. His partner Chris, they uploaded
- 6:45a YouTube video so Chris and Benjamin were the previous
- 6:49owners of of the Bam Oregon location when the Lego was
- 6:53consigned. So they say in their video that
- 6:56they had to move overseas somewhat suddenly.
- 6:58They said that Bam was seemingly supportive at first of them like
- 7:03needing to sell, but then headquarters later admitted to
- 7:06them that this had been the plan all along.
- 7:09They said that after they told headquarters this on some random
- 7:12Thursday night at the store, Brandon, remember of Joshua and
- 7:16Brandon, the new owners of the Bam location showed up and
- 7:20demanded the keys and threatened them with the police if they
- 7:23didn't comply. I know you guys love when I have
- 7:26Pumpkin here, but I don't know if you just heard her Jingle
- 7:28jangling all around the office. She wanted to come up.
- 7:31Hey, you want to say hi? If you guys are just listening,
- 7:33I have my little doggie, my little rescue doggie, my 3
- 7:36legged rescue girl pumpkin on my lap.
- 7:39So the point of their video was to show support for Brian, the
- 7:44one whose Lego has allegedly been stolen and supportive Ben
- 7:48as well, who's making the YouTube videos and to explain
- 7:51that they feel like their life savings have been taken from
- 7:54them. So then they show footage of
- 7:55Brandon allegedly in this video and they say that like when he
- 8:00came to say like hand over keys or whatever, he also apparently
- 8:04acknowledged that he knew that there was a big consignment and
- 8:09said that he would be taking it over.
- 8:11So they basically insinuate that they felt their hand was forced
- 8:14and headquarters were just like, if you fight this, then there
- 8:18will be legal ramifications. And in this video, they have
- 8:21audio that is allegedly them speaking to someone at
- 8:24corporate. They actually do show this guy's
- 8:26LinkedIn page and say his full name.
- 8:28I'm too scared to do that. OK, But they do it.
- 8:30You can go watch the video if you want.
- 8:31And you can hear allegedly him in this audio say that this
- 8:35sounds like a threat because it is.
- 8:37So the result is that Chris and Benjamin, the couple who
- 8:40previously owned the Bam location who have made this
- 8:42video, are suing Bam for this because through this takeover,
- 8:48Bam was also trying to say that they don't allow consignment.
- 8:51But Chris and Benjamin say that's not true.
- 8:53And they have the documents to prove it.
- 8:55So in trying to win the lawsuit for themselves, they're also
- 8:58trying to wrap up Brian's like, Lego collection compensation
- 9:02into whatever settlement they're fighting for.
- 9:04And they set up a GoFundMe to help with legal costs.
- 9:07They've already raised over $66,000 and their goal was
- 9:10$30,000. All right, so then on May 30th,
- 9:13BAM filed A lawsuit against reckless Ben and Brian Menzel.
- 9:18So reckless Ben YouTube Brian Lego guy accusing them of
- 9:22creating quote a coordinated multi platform campaign against
- 9:26the company which contains quote, false accusations,
- 9:29fabricated claims, deceptive practices and manufactured
- 9:33confrontations to extort money racketeer profiteer and damage
- 9:38the plaintiffs and their business interests.
- 9:40So they basically are claiming that this whole thing is like a
- 9:42fabricated extortion campaign. It keeps going.
- 9:45Then on June 1st, Ben announced that he had fled to Mexico
- 9:51following his release from jail. So after he released this video,
- 9:54obviously public pressure on the Utah police was high.
- 9:58So they ended up addressing this whole situation in a media
- 10:01briefing. And also, I want to say, I know
- 10:02I'm saying Utah police. It is specifically the American
- 10:06Fork, UT police force, but that is just a mouthful.
- 10:10So I'm saying Utah. So Police Chief Cameron Paul
- 10:13said that Ben's arrest stemmed from complaints of stalking and
- 10:17targeted residential picketing and that these complaints were
- 10:20specifically made by Joshua. Wow.
- 10:23Big surprise. On June 2nd, Ben uploaded a
- 10:25response video to the police. And in this video, he is sitting
- 10:29at like a fake media briefing podium.
- 10:32And on the podium where it would normally say the name of the
- 10:35police force, you know how they have that like, circular plaque
- 10:37usually, and it says the name of the police force around it.
- 10:40On his it says we steal from old people.
- 10:43OK, so in this video, Ben accused the police of concealing
- 10:46the true reason for his arrest. He claims that there was audio
- 10:50redacted from the police body Cam footage.
- 10:53However, they have the audio like Ben and his team have the
- 10:56audio. They have it partially captured
- 10:58on a GoPro that was set up inside his Airbnb.
- 11:01In the audio, allegedly one officer can be heard saying that
- 11:05quote, included in the warrant are Legos, which Ben argues
- 11:09contradicts the police department's explanation that
- 11:12the arrests were related to stalking allegations.
- 11:14And it's clear that it was related to the Legos, which as
- 11:17we know, they searched the Airbnb and there was no Lego.
- 11:20So he's basically saying he was arrested for no reason.
- 11:22So now another insane turn of events.
- 11:26This is going to keep going. I guess I'm going to have to
- 11:28give updates on Mini from now on, like about what's going on,
- 11:30because I imagine this will keep going.
- 11:32But the last final insane turn of events is that Patreon, the
- 11:37platform has gotten involved. So Reckless Ben uses Patreon to
- 11:41give his subscribers early access to his upcoming videos.
- 11:45Bam sent Patreon an official takedown request on May 29th
- 11:50asking for removal of media and accounts connected to Reckless
- 11:53Ban, including a complaint, a request for immediate content
- 11:57removal tied to a temporary restraining order, and a motion
- 12:00for a TRO and preliminary injunction.
- 12:02And then yesterday Patreon CEO Jack released a video on YouTube
- 12:07where he basically said to Bam go fuck yourselves, sue us if
- 12:13you want. And that is the story you guys
- 12:16of the Lego Mormon Mafia YouTube Patreon drama.
- 12:20I believe I have delivered all of the details that are out
- 12:24right now in chronological order.
- 12:26I really hope I did it justice. Hi you guys, another pick up
- 12:30from me. I prepped this episode
- 12:32yesterday. I recorded it, I was even
- 12:35uploading it, and then I saw that overnight Bam had released
- 12:40an entire their blog post documenting their side of things
- 12:44with dates and all of these sources and all this
- 12:47information. So it's way too long to, you
- 12:49know, go through all of it. Obviously.
- 12:52But some main takeaways they claim that the transition
- 12:57between Chris and Benjamin as owners of the Oregon BAM
- 13:00location. And the new?
- 13:02Owners Brandon Best and. Joshua.
- 13:04That that was. Fully planned they.
- 13:07Claim that Chris became uncooperative, refused to hand
- 13:10over the keys as agreed or to provide access codes, and was
- 13:14observed making multiple. Trips to her car.
- 13:17They claim that when the takeover occurred, there was
- 13:20very. Little inventory.
- 13:22And the store was run down. There was approximately $40,000
- 13:25of inventory, which I guess they're saying was very little.
- 13:28They also said that before leaving, Chris removed Ash from
- 13:31the till attempted to print store.
- 13:33Records and. Shared confidential footage
- 13:36without authorization. Then they write in late November
- 13:39or early December 2024, Brandon and Josh.
- 13:42Discover. Approximately 25 Star Wars sets
- 13:44in a closed closet in the back. They did not think any think of
- 13:47the fact that these had small stickers on them.
- 13:50They kept these sets segregated as they tried to determine what
- 13:53they were. In December 2024, and still
- 13:56unsure of whether they belonged to Brian, Bam showed these sets
- 14:00to and offered to give Brian these stickered sets as they
- 14:03felt bad for Chris's apparent mishandling of the situation and
- 14:06despite no reliable evidence of his ownership, this offer was
- 14:09not accepted by Brian Mensel. They say.
- 14:12Following an internal investigation, BAM, with
- 14:15internal and external help, discovered new evidence of
- 14:17negligence. Three sets of books were
- 14:19maintained by Crystal. As in Chris.
- 14:22A personal e-mail account to which she retained undisclosed
- 14:25access after leaving was still connected to company data and
- 14:29point of sale records showing she significantly underreported
- 14:32sales to Brian. And then they say on May 28th,
- 14:36they issued a temporary restraining order requiring.
- 14:39That the videos. From reckless Ben that his
- 14:42videos containing allegedly defamatory content be taken down
- 14:46they say that bam CEO extended an invite to Brian with a direct
- 14:51offer to sit down together, review the.
- 14:52Spreadsheets. Consignment agreement and point
- 14:54of sale data and attempt to informally and fairly resolve
- 14:57the problems associated with Chris's dealings with him,
- 15:00including offering him to take every Star Wars Lego item
- 15:02remaining in the Salem store and to otherwise find a way that he
- 15:06might be made whole for anything demonstrated to be unaccounted
- 15:09for. So essentially this blog post
- 15:12sounds like they are saying that Chris along with her husband
- 15:17Benjamin, who were the previous owners of the store, they were
- 15:21to blame for a lot of this like miscommunication and a lot of
- 15:25the disorganization of the store and all of that kind of stuff.
- 15:28But I will link the full blog post in the show notes it is.
- 15:31Very long, but like I said, I'm going to be doing updates on
- 15:34this, so I hope that this gave you guys some good background
- 15:37and any other updates on this I will include an regular mini.
- 15:42Anyways guys, thanks so much for listening.
- 15:44Thank you so much for bearing with us this week.
- 15:46I know it was a bit chaotic. I love you guys.
- 15:48Thank you and I hope you enjoyed Pumpkin for Friday Mini school
- 15:51as well and I will talk to you on Monday.
