- 0:05our latest episodes in your feed.
- 0:07We are jumping straight into what feels like the ultimate
- 0:10crossover story in combat sports.
- 0:13Our source material today is a really, really fascinating
- 0:15conversation from the JREMMA show featuring the Olympic gold
- 0:19medalist Gable Stevenson. Yeah, and our mission for this
- 0:22deep dive is to really pull out the playbook for an elite
- 0:26athletes transition. We're not just looking at
- 0:28Stevens story, we're trying to find those, those key Nuggets,
- 0:30you know, the mindset shifts, the mentorship, what it actually
- 0:34takes to pivot from 1 elite sport into the, I mean the
- 0:37brutal world of modern MMA. You really have to frame him as
- 0:40a true rarity. They call him a freak athlete
- 0:43and it fits. He's an Olympic wrestling
- 0:44champion, the pinnacle of that sport, and now he's learning to
- 0:46strike, learning MMA with with a singular legendary figure
- 0:51guiding him. And that contrast is everything.
- 0:53The the intense focus of wrestling versus the, you know,
- 0:57the total strategy of MMA. That's where the real lessons
- 0:59are. It's such a high stakes pivot
- 1:01and you have to start with the sheer weight of expectation on
- 1:05him literally from birth. His full name is Gable Dan.
- 1:08Right after Dan Gable, the legend.
- 1:11Exactly, and Stephen himself said that Dan Gables career
- 1:15timeline, his accomplishments, they align almost perfectly with
- 1:18his own. Except for this part.
- 1:20Except for this massive MMA detour, It's almost like a
- 1:23prophecy that, you know, took a weird.
- 1:25Turn it does. But that turn it points to a
- 1:28real problem he talked about, which is wrestling just doesn't
- 1:32have a robust professional league.
- 1:34You achieve everything, you're the best in the world, and then
- 1:36what? Where do you?
- 1:37Go. He mentioned that American
- 1:39freestyle promotion RAF that's trying to build those big
- 1:42matchups, you know, create those personalities.
- 1:44But if you're not a die hard wrestling fan, you might not
- 1:47realize that guys like Stevenson are basically forced to look
- 1:50elsewhere to make a real living. Which brings us to probably the
- 1:54most baffling part of his journey, the NFL tryout.
- 1:57Oh, this is incredible. I mean, think about this.
- 1:59He's 24 years old, just came from the WBB, and he decides to
- 2:02try out for the Buffalo Bills. Having never played a down of
- 2:06organized football in his life. Never.
- 2:08It's It's almost impossible to wrap your head around.
- 2:11It sounds like something from a movie.
- 2:12A comic book? Yeah.
- 2:14A superhuman just trying on different powers.
- 2:16And he admitted it. He showed up with no cleats.
- 2:19He had no idea what the playbook was.
- 2:21He called it crazy and he had absolutely 0D line technique.
- 2:25So how did? How does he even get a serious
- 2:27look from a professional NFL team?
- 2:30Pure effort, That's it, he said. He just decided to control what
- 2:34he could control, and that was sprinting his ass off in every
- 2:38single drill. He used that raw Olympic level
- 2:41explosiveness to make up for knowing nothing about the actual
- 2:45sport. And they considered him for a
- 2:47practice squad spot just based on that.
- 2:49Just on that engine, yeah, which tells you everything about his
- 2:51mentality. And that brings us to why he
- 2:53left WWE. Right, because he realized he
- 2:56couldn't give 100% to the sports entertainment side.
- 2:59Exactly. He still had that competitive
- 3:01fire that that do or die drive that needed a real outlet.
- 3:05He needed a real fight. Not a performance, it's.
- 3:08Not a performance. If you're going to go have a
- 3:11real fight, you might as well go to the top.
- 3:13And for that you need a guide. And his guide turns out to be
- 3:18arguably the greatest of all time, Jon Jones.
- 3:22How did that even start? It's almost too simple in
- 3:25Instagram DM. No way.
- 3:27Yep, Jones just reached out because he was a fan of
- 3:29wrestling. That casual message turned into
- 3:32Stevenson joining Jones camp before the 2nd sleep.
- 3:34A fight was supposed to happen. And what's so interesting is
- 3:37what Gabel was looking for in Jones.
- 3:39It wasn't just, you know, teach me some moves.
- 3:41He was drawn to Jones Drive, his aura, that ability to look
- 3:45completely calm and sound in every single position.
- 3:49He said Jones looked at him and basically said you can have this
- 3:51too. It was like this immediate
- 3:53validation. But the reality check must have
- 3:55been insane. Oh, totally, Steven admitted.
- 3:58He knew nothing. He didn't know how to defend a
- 4:00punch, a kick, how to even move his feet when he first stepped
- 4:03into the gym. And that really shows the
- 4:05challenge, doesn't it? His entire wrestling mindset was
- 4:08offense, offense, offense. It's me or you.
- 4:10He never even watched film on opponents.
- 4:12Not even in the Olympics, which is why, but there works in
- 4:15wrestling, you know, it's a simpler geometry.
- 4:17MMA, it's the total opposite. It demands strategy, defense,
- 4:22adaptation. And that is John Jones's whole
- 4:26world. O what does that mentorship
- 4:28actually look like? It's so granular, Jones will
- 4:31send him video clips of current top level UFC fighters and tell
- 4:35him watch his footwork here or see how he doesn't reset his
- 4:39weight properly there. So it's not just general advice,
- 4:42it's constant personalized coaching.
- 4:44Exactly. And that's where Stephen's
- 4:46Ferrari gas analogy comes from. Oh, right, he says.
- 4:49Most guys might have the Ferrari body, the athleticism, but
- 4:52they're running on 87 octane basic fuel.
- 4:56Jones puts Ferrari gas in his Ferrari.
- 4:58The fuels is the fight IQ. That's what makes them
- 5:00different. And Stevenson saw this up close.
- 5:03They talked about the first Gustafson fight, how Jones was
- 5:05barely training and just gutted it out on toughness.
- 5:07And then the rematch, yeah, when Jones was motivated, he smoked
- 5:11him. It just showed what happens when
- 5:13that mind is fully engaged. There was another story, too,
- 5:16right, about Jones being sick in camp.
- 5:18Yeah. Stevenson saw him sick with a
- 5:21respiratory thing, go out and do 5 hard sparring rounds just
- 5:24mopping the floor with high level PFL and ex UFC guys.
- 5:29After seeing that, Stevenson was convinced.
- 5:31He's just, he's unstoppable. And that's the real lesson for
- 5:35you, the listener, Joe Status isn't just about what you do on
- 5:38Fight Night. It's about what you do when
- 5:40you're sick, when no one's watching.
- 5:42For sure. So now he's taking that
- 5:44mentality into the heavyweight division, a division that, well,
- 5:48they both repeatedly called shallow.
- 5:50Shallow is a strong word. What do they mean by that?
- 5:52I think it means that outside of the absolute top tier, you know,
- 5:55Aspinall gone Jones, the talent pool isn't super deep.
- 6:00So a guy like Stephen at 25, with his speed and Olympic
- 6:03pedigree, he could really, really shake things up.
- 6:06And we've already seen flashes of it.
- 6:07I mean, he's only been striking for, what, seven months?
- 6:10And he landed a perfect left hook that dropped his opponent
- 6:13and then immediately a blastable takedown.
- 6:16That combination is terrifying. It's the ultimate hybrid
- 6:19signature, a clean KO punch into a world class takedown, and the
- 6:25reason he got there so fast is because he decided to handicap
- 6:28himself. Right, The Dirty boxing match,
- 6:30which would probably clarify what that was.
- 6:32He basically chose to fight a pure striking match.
- 6:35He deliberately took his best weapon, his wrestling off the
- 6:39table, to force himself to develop his hands to prove to
- 6:43everyone, and probably to himself, that he wasn't just
- 6:46going to be a wrestler in the cage.
- 6:47That willingness to choose the harder path, that's a champions
- 6:50mindset right there. It is, and it's defined by the
- 6:53most powerful thing he said on the show.
- 6:55He said that performance, that striking is the worst he will
- 6:59ever be in MMA. Wow, that's not arrogance now.
- 7:02It's absolute belief in his own rate of improvement.
- 7:05It's a statement of intent. And it links right back to what
- 7:07Jones taught him about being coachable.
- 7:09He said you have to be all ears, put your guard down and trust
- 7:12the team. The guys who walk in thinking
- 7:14they already know everything, they never make it to the top.
- 7:16Steven chose to be a sponge. And his goals are massive.
- 7:20He wants the UFC title, wants to beat Stipe's record of five
- 7:24defenses, but he keeps saying the real goal is to be the best
- 7:28version of Gable, not just chase the money.
- 7:31That focus on excellence brings up another point they made how
- 7:34rare it is for elite fighters to develop brand new weapons late
- 7:37in their careers. Yeah.
- 7:39That was fascinating. But Jones is the exception.
- 7:42At 36 years old, he develops this perfect spinning back kick
- 7:45just for the heavyweights. And the story was he was
- 7:48practicing it in the hotel lobby the night before a fight.
- 7:51The night before, yeah. Still tweaking it.
- 7:54It shows that evolution never ever stops.
- 7:56You saw with Vitor Belfort too, developing that wheel kick at
- 7:593536. It's incredible, and for
- 8:01Stevenson, the beautiful part is that just the threat of his
- 8:04wrestling changes everything in the striking exchange it.
- 8:07Completely changes the math we saw with Kevin Randleman and
- 8:10Crocop years ago. Right Randleman, the wrestler
- 8:12knocks out the legendary striker.
- 8:14Not because his hands were better, but because Crocop was
- 8:17so worried about the takedown that he left himself exposed for
- 8:20a split second. That's the world Stephen is
- 8:23stepping into. Before we get to the final take
- 8:25away on mindset, they did touch on a really important safety
- 8:29issue, eye pokes. Yeah, a huge ongoing problem.
- 8:32They talked about the Aspinal game fight and the solution they
- 8:35proposed was redesigning the glove.
- 8:38Into more of a mitten shape. Exactly.
- 8:40Cover the fingertips. You don't need the tips of your
- 8:42fingers to strike, but you need your hand open to grapple.
- 8:47A mitten design could eliminate most eye pokes without really
- 8:50hindering the grappling. It seems so obvious.
- 8:53It really does. And protecting a fighter's
- 8:55fiscal health? That transitions so well into
- 8:57what Jones is teaching him about protecting his focus.
- 9:00Because Gable is about to go on a rocket riot of fame.
- 9:03And with that comes so many liabilities.
- 9:06Jones is teaching him that excellence is what brings the
- 9:08money and fame. But the second you start
- 9:10focusing on the fame instead of the excellence.
- 9:12You lose your way. You lose your way.
- 9:14You have to take your attention from bad relationships, from
- 9:17people trying to scam you, from haters on social media.
- 9:20Every ounce of energy spent on that is energy not spent in the
- 9:24gym. And Jones, having gone through
- 9:26all his own public stumbles, is probably the only person who can
- 9:29truly guide him through that minefield.
- 9:32He's showing him where the land mines are before he steps on
- 9:34them. That's invaluable.
- 9:36So if we boil it all down, Gable Stephen's advantage is this this
- 9:40incredible trifecta. He's got the Olympic Foundation,
- 9:44the perfect physical gifts for heavyweight, and he has
- 9:47mentorship from the GOAT. And he has the mindset he has
- 9:51that do or die engine, but now it's being refined by an elite
- 9:55fight IQ. He has all the pieces which.
- 9:57Brings us to our final provocative thought for you to
- 10:00consider. We all know Jon Jones has had
- 10:02huge missteps. He's been through it all and
- 10:04he's still the GOAT. Now he's guiding his own
- 10:07replacement, a kid who's stated goal is just to be a good man
- 10:10and go home healthy. So the question is this Given
- 10:13that even the greatest of all time faces those temptations,
- 10:16how truly essential is it to find a mentor like Jones,
- 10:19someone who has survived the chaos to navigate that rocket
- 10:22ride of fame without losing who you are?
- 10:25That, more than any punch or takedown, might be the biggest
- 10:27fight Gable Stephen has ahead of him.
