- 0:39SPEAKER_01: He was uh diagnosed with cancer at 26, and a friend recommended him running.
- 0:44SPEAKER_01: Now he runs a lot, has done some marathons and does it with a big old smile.
- 0:48SPEAKER_01: AK Nate Cheesy, welcome to the podcast.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: How you doing, uh Cheesy?
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Hey, thank you, Fitz.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: I appreciate you inviting me to this podcast.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And I just I'm just honored and grateful for it because um, you know, uh, I'm I'm so happy that I get to share my stories to just uh every runners around the world and just daily runners who um just just trying to like get people to get to running.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: I love it, man.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: I feel like you do a great job, you know, uh with on your social media sharing it and like the the vibe, the happiness comes across uh via uh your content.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: So you do an amazing job, man.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Well, I I try my best, you know.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: Like I know like everyone has like happy days, bad days, and then all of us, like a lot of us are not uh elite, so like we have our work too.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: So um, but you know, I try to bring that smile to um everything that I post and just to inspire others or just into my daily run club, uh like people that's around me and just inspire others just just to be happy.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Uh, because like I think for me is people say like um I get to run, um, and that's a blessing already.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: So like yes, just being able to run, that's a blessing already.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: It's not like oh I have to run, it's like I got to run.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So I think that's the yes, that's the motivation for me.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Like, like whether it's my training program, whether it's just uh easy running, jogging, what I want to do, like you know, that's that's the that's the that's something that I want to share out.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: So, yep.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure, man.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: So talk to me about it, might be self-explanatory, but for those listening, cheesy, where did the name cheesy come from?
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: How come it's cheesy?
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: So uh just based on what you said uh in the intro, um the big smile, that's kind of where it comes from.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: But uh it's also I didn't actually create it that name.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Um, I gotta give uh credit where it's due.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Uh it's actually uh two runkles.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Uh they're like uncles, but they run, so we call them runkles.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Uh both of them, I think when I first joined uh run club, um, and they were the one that kind of just saw me like constantly smiling and everything coming into every uh whether it's a weekend run or a daily run, they're like, oh, this guy just smiles, and they're like, we need to give him a nickname, and that's how cheesy comes from.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: So like I don't take the credit for it.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: I I give the credit to them.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: They were the ones that like made like that created the nickname, and then it's kind of just like became identity of me, where that's kind of my motto of like keep running and keep smiling.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: No, that's a good uh motto and like kind of reminder, just having the name, you know.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Like races are hard and training is hard sometimes, but you keep the smile that's gonna keep the positive vibes and keep you going.
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: Um, and we're gonna have to coin a new term, even though I'm taking it from you.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: No credit, I'm giving you the credit, runkles.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: So if you have an uncle that runs, runkles, I I like this.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna use this.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Your beginning running journey, if you had a friend in England that pushed you to run right after you were diagnosed with cancer, like most people would think, I want to recover, rest, feel my normal self.
- 4:15SPEAKER_01: You just, hey, I'm going to run.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And this friend that pushed you, what what made him uh go, hey, I want to get you running?
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: What pushed you?
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: So when I got diagnosed, um, I got admitted to the hospital to like prep for surgery.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: And then he came and visited me.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, he just he he was like he he has been a runner since like high school, college.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Like he doesn't manage sports.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So like for him, like like running, it's it's it's like nothing.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: But like he never give me like that.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Um like he always like even though I'm not a runner to begin with, like he never give me like just like like you know, like the negative negativity or anything like that.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: He's always always been positive in my life.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: And I knew him since we were in uh primary school, so like like little kids.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: And so when he knew that, hey, uh I was diagnosed with cancer, and when he came visit, he was just like, hey, you know what?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Like uh I know you're going through a lot in your mind right now, mentally, physically, but let's do something.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Um, let's let's let's have something that you can look forward to um when you like recover from everything, like surgery treatment and everything like that.
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: Like, go and like have something to look for.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: I think like that, like at first I was just like, you're crazy.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: I hate running.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: He knew I hate running since I was a kid.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like because like I play basketball, like, which is crazy.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: I'm like the shortest guy you've ever seen on the basketball court, but like I play basketball, I play basketball, and then I played uh football, like uh soccer.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Running is like literally just drills and just like, oh, like you make mistakes, so like run is a torture to me.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so like for me, it's just like, oh, that's crazy.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna do that.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: I don't even run a mile or run a 5k on my own willingly.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: How am I gonna run a marathon?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And but like, yeah, at that time I was like, yeah, whatever, I I I'll do it.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Like I told him yes, I promise him.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Like he made me promise, he made me to promise him that I will run a marathon after I recover.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, I'll do that.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: And you know, Lord behold, um going through uh everything, and then I think two years after I was diagnosed with like after diagnosed with cancer and everything, two years later, just um my mental health was just in in the darkest place in my like darker place, and like I was like once I got diagnosed, I was I shut down my social media, I wasn't even on it, like I I just I gotten dark into the world.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: Um but luckily like I'm grateful that I have a good support system.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: Um my family, good friends, um, they knew about it, they kind of like you know, just just constantly being there for me.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: And one day I was just like, you know, I I just need to go out for a walk or run, I don't know, whatever.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: And that's when I kind of just like slowly like just running, walking, run, walk, and just that's when it all started, uh two, three years after uh my cancer diagnosis.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: And that's when I just like okay, like, oh, and then like that's when I remember, oh yeah, I have a promise that I made like a couple years back, and I actually need to do it.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: And I was like, okay, you know what?
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I I set my date on like when I'm gonna run my marathon, and then um, and then you know, at that time it was with COVID and everything, it was just a mess.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: But you know, um I was I'm just grateful.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Like um, I set the date and now I was like, okay, I'm gonna do because I'm basically going from couch potato to to to a marathon.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: So like to a full.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: So and then I just set like from five like couch potato to 5k, 5k to 10k, and then 10k to a half, and then half to a full.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: So I slowly gradually did it.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: I didn't go from couch potato to a f to a full, which even though it only took me uh I think it was like two years.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So you went from recovery to training to building up endurance for the distance in two years.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Uh no, like uh so like two years uh from cancer diagnosis to uh recovery to start running, and now from from uh recovery uh like from couch potato to a full marathon to so with a total of like four years, I think.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: Like that's what it is.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, four years, yeah.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: So because I didn't I I literally like I didn't let people knew that I I got diagnosed with cancer until like my third year basically.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: So got it, okay.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: You were already running then, I'm assuming, yeah, by that third year.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I like kind of like started running and stuff like that.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And then like I I wasn't comfortable telling people about my cancer diagnosis until like my third year when I joined a run club, and then someone was like, oh, like what inspired you to run?
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: And then at that point, like I just I didn't feel like the burden on my shoulder, and I kind of just shared it.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And then that's when I knew that like oh like I can use my story to inspire others to like to do stuff like that, and yep.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Why do you think that friend of yours picked one a marathon of all things?
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Granted, he was a runner, but uh more so even believe that you could do it.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: Like, hey, I know my friend hates running, I'm gonna pick this for him.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: And where where did that belief come from?
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: I honestly don't know.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Um I haven't like I haven't really asked him about that.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: I probably should.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: But uh I don't know.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I think like he picked like one of the hardest things, and like in my mind, I like but like he knew like I was gonna do it.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Like, I don't know, like you know, like those people around you that like even though it's like one of the hardest things that you were gonna hate with your life, but yet like they know that you can do it, and like I think that's kind of like I would say like that's the special part about a friendship that's that lasted that long in my entire life, and I'm always grateful for it.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: So I think yeah, I I I really don't know.
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Like, I need to ask him that.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: Sounds like an amazing friendship, man, and having run marathons, you yourself who have run marathons, it it's it's definitely something that changes after you run it and finish and do it again, like your mind and what you think is possible changes.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: So there's probably something to that there, yeah.
- 11:01SPEAKER_01: Um, but shout out to that friend, man.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: When's the moment you know you're starting to run?
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Um, you're in your third year, maybe close to your fourth year, getting ready for your marathon.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Like, when's the moment that it clicked?
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: You're getting ready for that promise of the marathon, yeah, and you felt, oh yes, I I'm gonna be able to do this marathon.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: When did that moment happen?
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: I don't think it ever happened.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I just like no, because I I signed up for the race and I was like, okay, well, I I have to run it.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: Like, there's no going back because there's no refund or anything.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: So, like, so it's like I have to do it.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: Like, like you know, like once you sign up a race, like you just have to do it.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: Like, and did I feel like I'm prepared for it?
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: But what was the training plan like?
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: Would you you pick something online or something?
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Uh no, it was like through a run club locally, they were training people, like they have a training program for beginners, and I just kind of was like, Okay, well, um, I finished a half, so let's see how this full thing goes.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And it was yeah, it was not fun.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: I just put it that way.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Vancouver, if I remember right, was your first one, right?
- 12:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was my first one.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: It was it was like so talking about like Vancouver, yeah, that was my first one.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: And um, and I was I went up there just because I haven't seen my friend, like one of my good friends for a long time, and then um it was during like it was like right after COVID too, like when everything happened, and then like I was just like, okay, no, you know what, I'm gonna pick that marathon.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: And my friend was like, oh yeah, let's do it, let's run it too.
- 12:37SPEAKER_00: And then it was his first two, and then like I two first, okay.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Two first meeting up.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: So like it was it was good.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: Like, I really enjoy it.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: Um like shout out to like BMO Vancouver Marathon.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: They they have the best staff and everything.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: I appreciate it.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: So yeah, it was a it was a memorable first marathon for sure.
- 12:58SPEAKER_00: The route itself was the route itself was just interesting, like just put it that way.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Well, first.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: How did you feel midway through the race?
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Like, oh I was what am I doing here?
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: No, like so I didn't realize that a marathon has a cutoff time.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: Like, I know that there is like a time limit, but like for Vancouver, they have like a halfway cutoff time.
- 13:29SPEAKER_00: So like if you don't make it, then like they will they will bust you, like they were like, okay, you need to go to the bus.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that until like the day before the marathon.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: So and then I was just like, I was talking to my friend, I was like, hey, so like we need to cross that bridge by this time.
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: If not, we're gonna get on the bus.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: And then we're like, oh crap.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: So like I just remember um because I was like, we're in the last corral, and then like the first half was just hilly as crap.
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: Like for the first marathoner, I didn't look at the map, I didn't look at the route, I didn't look at the elevation until the day before, you know.
- 14:12SPEAKER_00: First first marathoner mistake, but you know, um, so like I just remember um there's the bike marshal at the back, which is like, hey, by the way, you guys have this many hours to get to the halfway point, and I'm like, okay, got it, got it, got it.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: But like, I just remember when we crossed like the bridge, and then I think it's it's like 20, like I think it's like not at 30k yet, but like 20 something K.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Um, and then and I crossed the bridge and I just like stood there.
- 14:46SPEAKER_00: I just like shit.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: I still have more to go, but like, can I just can I can I be done?
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: I just remember um my friend back home, they were tracking me on the app, and they're like, dude, the guy's not moving.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Like he just like stood there, stand still for like for like Is he okay?
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Is he okay?
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Like they were literally asking me after the race, and they're like, You were you were like stand alone there for like 20 minutes, like not moving at all.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: I was like, Oh yeah, I wasn't moving.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: I stood there and just like, what am I doing?
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Looking up and so where would I do?
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: Where'd I go?
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but uh, but you know, it's always memorable the first one, and um I would never trade it, even though it's one of the harder scores for first marathona, I would say, like if you don't train well, but like yeah, um, I'm always grateful for it because like the experience will never like I would never forget about it.
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, yeah.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: So for sure.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: Uh we have that in common.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: I also picked the Haley race for my first one, and um I I thought I trained for Hills, but I did not.
- 15:55SPEAKER_01: Um what was that feeling like when you finished?
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: Like obviously you had a lot, I'm sure, going on your first marathon.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: That pause close to 30k.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Um, you completed a promise, you know, to a friend, like, hey, I'm gonna run a marathon after being diagnosed with cancer, and like you did something amazing.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: What did it feel like after you crossed the finish line?
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: You got all these friends tracking you and whatnot.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: Uh for me it was just like, oh, I finished a marathon.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Like my first word was just like, oh, I finished a marathon.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Like, like, like me, a yeah, me, a chubby guy that like I grew up chubby and like I'm just like, oh I actually grew up chubby.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: So like I finished a marathon, like that, like that phrase just keep on reminding me in my head and and like seeing like even though like I just remember receiving messages from phone or DMs, like like telling me like prior to the marathon and then after post-marathon, I still have screenshots of every single message that like That's cool, yeah.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: And it's just like how like how people like encourage you to do things that you yourself never thought you would ever do.
- 17:11SPEAKER_00: Even like my family couldn't even believe that.
- 17:14SPEAKER_00: I just remember my mom and my dad were just like and my sister like oh this guy ran a marathon, like this guy actually finished a marathon.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: So you went up in the family totem pole that day.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: So and then like that's when you realize that like um you know like human can do things that you even think it's impossible.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: And and like I know that there's also a stat where it's like like 1% of the entire world finish a marathon, and that's when I was like, oh, like this this is kind of cool.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: Running is actually cool.
- 17:56SPEAKER_00: Like, I actually want to keep running, like it's not like a one-and-done deal.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, like I know there's a lot of people like, okay, I just want to do one marathon and that's it, nothing else.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: And but like for me, it was just like, oh, I want to keep going because um this like a marathon 26.2 miles uh represent kind of like uh when I was diagnosed with cancer, and when I was it just reminds me like my journey of my life, how it is, and just with everything, it's just like oh, like it's something that I want to take in hard on doing, like not just reminding myself, but also like telling others that like human can do hard things, like go chase it, like even though you think it's impossible, but when you have people around you that like thinks everything is possible for you, go do it.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: Don't don't don't just sit, just go chase that dread.
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: So yeah, no, for sure, man.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Running is uh is an amazing sport, man.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: When you get to uh you know, you prove to yourself you can do amazing things, but more so like when you have the support like you have to show people that it does it, and you can do it too, you know.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: It is an amazing feeling.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Um it sounds like it's running and also post-cancer diagnosis has done a lot for you.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: How does it change how you see, view things, train and stuff?
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Um, I think it changed uh like cancer definitely changed my personality a lot.
- 19:32SPEAKER_00: Like I'm always like before cancer, I'm more like a perfectionist on like doing everything.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Everything has to be this, like there's only one way to do everything, like this is the correct way.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: But when cancer like when cancer comes around, that's when I just like I cannot predict like at 26 I would get diagnosed with cancer.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: Like, oh I thought like I like I I thought I was healthy, I thought I was fine.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Once that hit, it kind of just like makes you think of life differently.
- 20:05SPEAKER_00: You're looking at like how can I like for friendship or for relationship with family, it's just like how can I um like like spending time with this person or my family is like what's the best I can do that we can treasure this time together?
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: I I would say I wouldn't have felt that way if it wasn't like when I was diagnosed with cancer and that like I had to think about life and death, like that, yeah, and it kind of just hit you, and just like oh in your 20s, you just like okay, like I have this goal to hit and everything, but like at the same time invincible and stuff, yeah, and like I could do everything, yeah.
- 20:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like that's when you just kind of like okay, like I I kind of just like look at life differently in ways like um just treasure the moments you have with everyone because you never know when is the last time you'll see this person, or you know, and and that's kind of how it changes my life, and it also um during when I was diagnosed with cancer, one of my good friends and my uncle was later diagnosed with cancer, and gotcha seeing them like um didn't make it, but yet they fought a good fight, like that's when it just hits you harder, and that I don't want to waste the time that I have.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Um, that I want to do something, whether it's inspiring others to keep going, to keep chasing, or just me chasing that goal that I also have in my life.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: So that's that's kind of like what changes it changes my thought process and like my mental.
- 21:45SPEAKER_01: No, that's beautiful, man.
- 21:46SPEAKER_01: I love it, man.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, for those listening, cherish what you have now, get those experiences, have fun while you're here, do it, man, enjoy it.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, be present.
- 21:57SPEAKER_01: That's all that's what's important.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: That's what's important, you know.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: Make the impact.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: Talking about that, you're all in running now, right?
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: You've run more than one marathon.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: You've run several now.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: What keeps you coming back?
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: Like, tell me about some of these marathons you've run now.
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um, yeah, I think like just like previously when I uh mentioned like uh like my goal is to run one marathon every year, um just reminding myself how far I have gone through in life, but I also want to like use my story to inspire people that like yes, I'm running.
- 22:36SPEAKER_00: Um I'm also like like every year I set a goal that I want to chase towards.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Whether it's like a successful goal, but I have that goal and I want to chase it, even though I always try my best to chase it, even though if it like it didn't happen, it didn't happen like the past year where it just didn't happen.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: Like my goal was to do a sub five, but it didn't happen like with many things going on in life, and that race was just not my race, and it's okay.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Like, but I try my best throughout the entire year training, and and it's okay.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: That's what I want to like every year, just a goal and also letting people know that it's okay if you fail because you did your best to try doing it, and that's okay, you know.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 23:25SPEAKER_01: Talking about that, I've seen you run all over the world, kind of.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: I I even saw a run in Japan.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: Like, what's your favorite place you've run?
- 23:33SPEAKER_00: So, like, so the the reason why I run in every places that I go is because like that's the best way, in my opinion, to like just check around the city.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Because like usually I will go in the early morning or late at night when there's just not many tourists, not many people, I can just check out everything and just like you're in your own zone, you know, kind of a thing where you just see the beauty of everything without the noise of the city or everything like that.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: And and that's just kind of what I love to do, like uh running, running to check around the city, and that's all like I always like tell people, hey, if you go to a new city that you never visit or country, just run.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Like, you don't have to be like, oh, I need to hit the pace.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: No, I never do, like, usually this run is just like casual, like here, I'll stop here, take a picture here, take a picture there.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: But I always like, like for me, I don't know.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Like, I I enjoy every places I went.
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: Like, I think for if you talk about like the most memorable places was probably uh just recently when I went, like when I was in Japan, and I get to see um the first day that Mount Fiji was having snow.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: I think that was like the that was like the that was like the coolest thing I've ever seen.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: Like, because people have been telling us, hey, there's no snow, there hasn't been snowing yet.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: And like the the day that we like I was there like that morning, like clouds clear, snowing on the top of the mountain, and I was just like, that's just beauty right there.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Like you can't you can't like replicate it.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, that's that's a very nice one, and agreed wholeheartedly on the running in a new city and forget about the pace, just go nice and easy, enjoy.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: You might see some stuff you want to visit later when you're not running.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's definitely a fun way to see a city for sure.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: Yep, definitely.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: What what have you learned as you run in other cities outside the like US from like running in other cities?
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: What's what have you learned?
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: Um, I think it's it's actually a lot of people that actually runs also, like and it's it's pretty cool where you know, like when you're running, like like anywhere, like at runner high, like run runner when they say hi, even though they're running, it's just like hey, hey, like you know, that like little little little like hey, and it's like a universal like thing.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like the hello running pass by.
- 26:01SPEAKER_00: Hello, yeah, pass by.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: So like it's it's pretty cool, like even though like I may not speak their languages, but like like everyone kind of just like hey not and everything.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: It's it's pretty cool.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: And and it's you know, um it's I get to like run in like like when I get the opportunity to run at the local run club, and it's also pretty cool too, like they don't really care if you speak their languages.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: Like running is a universal language, and and they're just like, hey, let's just go around, have fun, and uh learn about what other running club does, and and you know, it's it's just enjoy the moment uh and just learn more.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: And it's and that's that's what uh I love about running.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: It unified like you unified people, whether you're you're like whatever race you are, whatever languages you speak, like that's that's where it is.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: So no, agreed for sure.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: I feel like every time you travel now, when you become a runner, you can spot a runner, you know, it's the shoes, the way they dress, yeah, the morning time when you're out and about, and yeah, the language doesn't matter, you know, that simple hell hello is like acknowledgement.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: Let's talk racing.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: So somehow, funny enough, we were joking for those listening.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: Both me and Cheesy ran indie last year and had no idea about each other, and we probably followed each other around the same time, too.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: But ran indie marathon.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's fine.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: So we could have linked up, yeah, and ran indie.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: But how'd that race go for you?
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: I know it wasn't like the best outcome, but walk me through that through that race.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Uh I heard it was like a tough one, huh?
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah, it was definitely a tough run.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: Um, I uh I traveled back.
- 27:44SPEAKER_00: Uh I flew in the Tuesday because the race was on a Saturday.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, it was on a Saturday, right?
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was on Saturday.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: So I flew in um a 16-hour flight um back home here in the States on a Tuesday evening, and then I left with my group to end the was it was it on a Wednesday or no, it was on a Thursday.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: So like I had a day to unpack, repack, and then hit the road again.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And like and then a 10, like, and then a drive, and I was just like, oh, you know, like throughout the drive, like my friends was great, like were great, like they're like, hey, you don't need to drive this lake.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: We know that you've been traveling, like just don't drive, just rest.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: I was let me tell you, like, the resting part was just non-existent, just because like you've been sitting for so long, your hips are just tired already.
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: And then like when I tried to stretch more at the place that I was staying, and I saw that, you know, it like I knew at the point where I was like, okay, I might not have the A goal that I want to hit at that race.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: Like I knew it in the beginning, and I was just like, you know what, let's let's see what we can do.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Like, let's see.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: And um, I think uh like the first um the first part of the race was fine, like hitting halfway through, I was doing okay, like, but it hit me is when we I don't know if you remember, like we were going through like one of the museum thingy, and then you have to get off the highway to like that little little little like weird back road thingy, and then it was like all like downhill.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, so like there was like a highway you got on to the museum, and you made like a turn into like a weird corner ditch, and then it was just straight downhill.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was I just remember going down that hill, and then halfway through, I said, Oh, my hamstring.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: I was like, Oh no, that's not good.
- 29:51SPEAKER_00: And then and then that's when I know, okay, I'm not gonna hit my eagle.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: I knew it.
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: And then like I had to walk for like two and a half miles, I think.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: And then my friend kind of came along and said, Hey, you okay?
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: I was like, no, I think I pull something, and uh we'll see how that goes.
- 30:13SPEAKER_00: And then she was like, Alright, I'll be up front and then see if you can catch me.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: I was like, Oh great.
- 30:22SPEAKER_00: Um, and then so like I kind of like after two and a half miles, I was like, okay, let me see if I can jog a bit.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: And then I jog a bit.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, it is not too bad.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: Let's see, like, let's run a little bit and then see how it goes.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: And then I was like, okay, like maybe we can like finish this race with a run.
- 30:40SPEAKER_00: I caught up to my friend, and then we kind of just like like kind of hitting back and forth, pacing together, and then like I just finished it.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: I'm grateful that I finished.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: That's that's all I like for me was just like I finished the race.
- 30:53SPEAKER_00: It was I think I finished like 515-ish, something like that.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, you know, it's it's okay.
- 31:00SPEAKER_00: Like I like I didn't hit my ego, but that's okay.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Like I knew it, and I didn't have like I wasn't like upset or anything because you know race happened, and I'm just glad I didn't have to pull out in the middle of the road because I've I've seen people pulling out on the side of the road and just like just sat there.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: I was just like, okay, no, like Nate, you know, don't be that person.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was just like, okay, no, we're not doing this.
- 31:26SPEAKER_00: Like, like, we can finish this, and but like I would be grateful and thankful for the support.
- 31:34SPEAKER_00: Uh, at the last part of the marathon, like like the crowds were still there.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: I'm just grateful for them.
- 31:41SPEAKER_00: Like, because I was just remember coming through, and then some guy saw my because like my singlet, there's cheesy name on it.
- 31:49SPEAKER_00: They're like, cheesy, and I was just like, I gave him my eye roll.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: I was so I I was just like, dude, I feel so bad for the guy.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Honestly, I if he's listening, I'm so sorry.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: But like, I feel so bad because like he was he said, like, hey, go cheesy.
- 32:06SPEAKER_00: I was just like, uh, and they was like, Don't eye roll me, keep going.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: And I was just like, I got it.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I feel so bad.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: But you know, I I'm grateful for the crowds because like they were there to cheer you on no matter what.
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: And so shout out to Indy.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: It's not one of the world majors, but yet they have the best like supports, um, whether it's the beginning, middle, or the end.
- 32:28SPEAKER_00: The people kind of just they do really like support, like the community that's there, that they really support the race, and so you know, I'm always grateful for them.
- 32:37SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, it was a well-supported race.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: I agree.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: I I love the event, love the expo, it was it was good vibes and stuff like that.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Um very easy to get to, fun race.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Um, a lot of crowds, crowd to your point, was very well uh good crowd as well, pumped up.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: Um what kept you going when you when you were uh struggling there in Indy?
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: I what kept me going?
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: Um I think for me it was just like I'm not gonna give up.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: Um uh even though it hurts, like, but yeah, like I wasn't I I was gauging, like I don't want to get injured and also at the same time.
- 33:21SPEAKER_00: Like I was gauging myself, like how does my body feel?
- 33:24SPEAKER_00: Like, can we go for it?
- 33:25SPEAKER_00: Like, I think at some point where I just like if I can't, then I'll pull it off.
- 33:30SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not gonna get like injured and I had to do surgery, like you know, rehab like crazy, and it's not really worth it.
- 33:37SPEAKER_00: And like, but like once I gauge it, I was like, okay, like I'm able to run, like maybe not at a race, race pace, but like let's finish this thing where I trained 20 weeks for and and you know it I finished and I'm grateful for it.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: Like it's it's it's just like like in the sense where pushing myself yet not get injured uh to finish the race, I would say.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: Like I I I don't think this race was like something that like just like oh I'm I'm like even though I'm like injured, I'm still going.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: No, like at the back of my mind was like if I'm really injured and I can't run, then like I'm not gonna do that to myself.
- 34:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so um, but like just I was just like slowly like gauging, like, okay, if I can't do it, like let's do it, like let's finish this.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: You got uh more experience under your belt now with a few races and whatnot.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Like, what's your training look like nowadays?
- 34:38SPEAKER_00: Uh so like this year, uh I actually set like I haven't told anyone so like about my 2026 goals.
- 34:50SPEAKER_00: So except so like this year I did something different that I actually um have a coach, like a personal coach, not uh not a like a run, not a like app, because last year I kind of used runner as like my um training like that.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yep.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: So but uh but I like here I want to also tell that like runners app is to help you, so like you kind of have to gauge yourself, don't just trust the entire plan like the entire thing to plan for you.
- 35:20SPEAKER_00: You gotta engage like you have to like be responsible for what mileage you need to do and what type of pace you need to do.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: So like so you you gotta be diligent and not just trust the app or the AI to tell you what to do.
- 35:32SPEAKER_00: Um, so put it out there because I know there's a lot of controversy going on these days with um the AI app and everything, but um, but like I think um I think this year I did differently is that like I have actually a personal coach that like see all my runs, see my data, and um and he like he is the one that when I told him my goal for 2026, he was like, Oh, you can do better than that.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: He was probably the first one that ever told me that you can do better than that goal that I have set in the beginning of 2026.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: So um shout out to Coach giving me the confidence on like achieving what goal that I want to do for 2026.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: So like right now I'm uh I'm just doing like just building up my mileage, just base mileage, so like um 30, 40 um miles a week, a lot of just easy, just easy runs, um uh just how I feel, easy runs, and then maybe add in like strides at the end, or just like surge just run uh like after like the warm-up and then just search and then see how I hold and then you know those little things.
- 36:51SPEAKER_00: Um and so it's been doing pretty good.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: Like I it's a different, like a different approach, definitely with a coach like yeah, that like sees all your data and see all your runs and then like how you're doing and like so yeah, so it's a different approach this year, and uh hopefully I will be able to succeed uh my goal, uh my time goal for 2026.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: So did you have a race pick out already yet?
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: It's okay if you're not sharing yet, but can I wait to share?
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: Like I have but uh we're gonna wait for a bit because it's it's it's the end of the year, so like so nice, okay.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I have so you're gonna basically be training most of the year, yes.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: And uh, I think like when I was talking to Coach, uh he was like, Thank you for giving me that whole year to like help you to build up to that.
- 37:45SPEAKER_00: And then he was like, This is the perfect timing, like I can see where your base is at, and then I can like work with that to build it up.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: Because I like he was like, you can just the thing is with like I know like a lot of marathon, just marathon training is like 16, like 16 to 20 weeks for like amateur like us, and then but like I noticed like last year when I was training, I was just like, oh, I'm I'm like I'm lacking something, like whether it's like the previous couple several months of like building up to that.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: And so I think this year the changes and like just like me myself seeing my runs like lately, and just that oh like that actually helped me to be better, and so like that's that's where it is, like ending up, and so no, that sounds fun, man, and I'm excited for your whole year.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: I appreciate it.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: That's that's gonna be fun, man.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be a whole different runner by the end of uh this year for sure.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: I hope so too, because like it's uh it's definitely something new.
- 38:52SPEAKER_00: Like um, like before for me, it was just like okay, I want to improve like 15 to 30 minutes or something like that, and like but but like I don't know, like once like after the indie, and then um after indie, I just kind of like you know, like I think I can do better, and like I want to do better, and I think that's like I know like so.
- 39:19SPEAKER_00: I just want to clarify running is still fun for me.
- 39:22SPEAKER_00: I I still love running, but like I love to chase something that I think it's impossible.
- 39:29SPEAKER_00: A lot of people think it's impossible, but I like to chase those, and like uh whether I fail or not, but like I give my chance a chance to chase those.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: And um and like I know like running supposedly I still love running, running is still fun for me, but like for me, like chasing those goals is also the fun part of running too.
- 39:50SPEAKER_00: So so so like I I I give props to like everyone that like hey running should be enjoyable, and that is true.
- 39:58SPEAKER_00: You should enjoy all your runs.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: It shouldn't be just like chasing time, chasing goals.
- 40:02SPEAKER_00: That's not it, but like like I like finding the balance of it, I think that's the thing to do.
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: So you gotta enjoy the sport.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: How you get injured when you don't, when you hammer down too much and you focus on all the uh X's and O's for lack of better words.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: Um, you gotta enjoy it running now consistently for some time.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Now you gotta coach, you know.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: Um, some years ago now you were cancer surviving.
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: Um what do you dream about nowadays?
- 40:31SPEAKER_00: Me dreaming, I think, would be um uh like honestly, BQ.
- 40:38SPEAKER_00: Like that's that's my ultimate goal.
- 40:41SPEAKER_00: Like, um because I think like just um I love it, yeah.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: So like I know it's still a way to go for me, um, but I know that like my ultimate goal is to run Boston with a BQ time.
- 40:57SPEAKER_00: So like that's where like I that's one goal that I set for myself um after yeah, like after running New York.
- 41:08SPEAKER_00: Um, because I'm grateful and thankful um that uh like for Chicago, like I got lucky first time, charm, got in first try, and then I got into Chicago, and then I was like, okay, this world major thing it's it's coming.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: Like I was like, oh, I really enjoy running these world majors, and then like grateful for New York, it was um it was New Balance that gave me the bib to run New York.
- 41:33SPEAKER_00: So I'll always wholeheartedly thankful for New Balance for that.
- 41:36SPEAKER_00: Um and and that race, it's like when I ran after finishing New York outside, so the only race that's in the United States is that's world major is Boston.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and I was like, you know, like for Boston, like I know you can do charity and stuff, and I was always always support those charity and stuff because they do amazing things, but like for me myself, like I want to I want to put I I like I want to get my Boston bib by qualifying for it.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: And yeah, so that's my ultimate goal on everything.
- 42:16SPEAKER_00: And um it's it's definitely a lot of hard work gonna put in.
- 42:21SPEAKER_00: But you know, it's it's what it's what um that's what dream is about.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: Like you go do it and you go chase it.
- 42:29SPEAKER_00: Go make it and like hopefully like my category, I mean my like young 30s, so you know that that's sub three, yeah.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: So uh sub three is just like, oh, you might get in, like you need to run a sub 250.
- 42:50SPEAKER_00: So you know it's it's hard, but like I think like me giving myself that vision is something that you won't know if you if you don't try, and like this year doing it differently and thinking with a coach, I think that will kind of prepare me to get there eventually.
- 43:07SPEAKER_00: My ultimate dream is to like BQ run Boston from like by myself to get there.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: So that's awesome, man.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: I have a similar goal myself, want to run BQ.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: Um let's make it happen, you know?
- 43:23SPEAKER_00: There you go, there you go.
- 43:26SPEAKER_01: Where do um where do you want running to take you next?
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: I know you want to do BQ and we're working towards that, but like you got your social media, you got running, you're running races, you got this year going.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: Where do you want running to take you next?
- 43:39SPEAKER_00: I um like so honestly, when I started my like my cheesy running Instagram or social media thing, like I wasn't even like thinking about like being like what they call now influencer.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not like I only have like a thousand followers, and for me, it's just like how am I how can I like Like use my story to inspire or like influence others.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: Like when I if I want to use the influencer word, I was just like, how can I influence you to go from couch potato to running or just start a healthy lifestyle?
- 44:18SPEAKER_00: Or for especially for like young cancer patients or like survivors, I want to let them know it's like, hey, like you like you're not defined by your cancer diagnosis.
- 44:32SPEAKER_00: You can do amazing things after that.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: You can chase your dream.
- 44:38SPEAKER_00: So don't ever be defined by your cancer.
- 44:41SPEAKER_00: Always um go keep chasing.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Like you can do it.
- 44:45SPEAKER_00: Like I understand, like, because I went through it myself that I understand the mental aspect that was like I never thought about it.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: Like physically, it was hard enough, but like the mental aspect of like having cancer, going through treatment, um, and then the post-cancer part where you do need to do checkup every couple months, six months, um, like scans, like the anxiety that it gives you, it's I don't think like normal people, like I don't I didn't mean it to like to like be like saying bad things about it, but like unless you're as someone that like as a cancer patient caregiver or like someone that actually like go through cancer, like like you will not never understand the mental expect uh aspect of it until you go through it and just like like even the thought of it, like, oh, is it gonna like come back?
- 45:41SPEAKER_00: Like that thought that just kind of haunts you like every time you go in for like a blood work, like check up blood work, yeah, or a scan, like that kind of where it is.
- 45:51SPEAKER_00: And I just want to like encourage those people, especially just like hey, it's okay, like like surround yourself with people that support you and like keep going, keep chasing.
- 46:03SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm grateful that I actually um able to find like on Instagram or like social media that there's people actually are like like even going through cancer and they still running, dreaming, big goals, like still doing it.
- 46:18SPEAKER_00: And that's all my like my entire purpose of like having this social media is to like just to encourage people, like um inspire others to like keep doing good things and like just um and just uh just just encouraging encouraging people and then just put a smile in their face that like hey life is okay, like you got this, like it's okay.
- 46:41SPEAKER_00: Like I'm here for you if you need anything, and like and you know that's that's kind of what it is.
