Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome back to the Retail podcast live from NRF
- 0:03with Big Commerce. I'm lucky enough to be joined by
- 0:06Senior Vice President Meghan Stabler.
- 0:09Yeah, that alright. High five on now.
- 0:11Yeah, it's been a long. Day take number six, just in
- 0:14case you Why are we Live 5 live at the beginning of the show?
- 0:17But anyway, as you can say, we're already having fun with
- 0:19Big Commerce. So Megan, Yeah, if you don't
- 0:21mind, just take us through about what Big Commerce does for those
- 0:24who don't know what the focus is.
- 0:26And what I'd love to know is what's been top of mind for a
- 0:29retailer's coming to you? During this show, all right.
- 0:31So Big Commerce is an enterprise e-commerce platform.
- 0:34So you know our our ability to provide the world's leading
- 0:39brands and retailers with world class ecommerce experience,
- 0:42right, a modern tech stack. So people have probably heard
- 0:45about composability and things, right.
- 0:47So we're composable e-commerce platform.
- 0:48You probably got brands and retailers that are both B to C
- 0:51and maybe B to B. So we, we provide both
- 0:53capabilities and that sort of modern tech stack to really take
- 0:56advantage of you know what is needed in today's business that
- 1:00connect to shoppers wherever they are.
- 1:01And then we have a subsidiary called Phenomics, which is all
- 1:04about optimising your data feed and feed management to make sure
- 1:07you're connecting to the channels that you care about
- 1:10where shoppers are out. So the Instagrams are tik toks,
- 1:12right? And so optimising data feeds is
- 1:15also one of the core things that we do.
- 1:16And and you build that as in like you help retailers with the
- 1:19whole stack in terms of from or is there one specific element of
- 1:23that is that? Such no, the whole stack, I mean
- 1:25you know our focus is making sure that brands and retailers
- 1:30can build online unique experiences or offline unique
- 1:34experiences too and combine it together.
- 1:35So as a modern ecommerce platform, we're not a monolith
- 1:39where a composable platform, you can just do pure either be you
- 1:41can have direct to consumer if you want to as well, yeah, or
- 1:44you can just be pure B to C So we enable you to combine all of
- 1:48those in in a tech stack with a high performing checkout, create
- 1:52unique, compelling experiences, integrate advanced functionality
- 1:56from many of our partners like Bloom Reach or Algolia,
- 2:00integrate content management systems like Content Stack or
- 2:03Contentful into it and really build this wonderful experience.
- 2:06So we find brands and retailers literally a changing the way
- 2:12that they want to engage with their shoppers and their
- 2:14consumers online and they have to find those right.
- 2:16Tech stacks, Yeah, they make you work to connect to them.
- 2:19And as I said, they've also got to connect to the channels where
- 2:21I may be shopping their Instagrams that Tik Toks, right
- 2:24and all those other platforms. So we enable that from within
- 2:27the platform and within our ecosystem of of providers to
- 2:31him. What's been in terms of when you
- 2:33think about your experience here at NRF and the the?
- 2:36The. Volume of retailers trying to
- 2:39solve their different problems What What's your sense?
- 2:41What do you feel? Everyone's all focused.
- 2:43On look, you know it's 2024, beginning of 2024, people have
- 2:47people and businesses have spent that sort of fast, rapid couple
- 2:51of years through the COVID era, right.
- 2:53You know they had to rapidly accelerated into you know, buy
- 2:57online, pick up curbside, right. They had to think about buy now,
- 3:00pay later for shifting economic conditions.
- 3:02So we know that brands and retailers had to rapidly adopt
- 3:05tech. You know, we're a couple of
- 3:07years past the pandemic and now the beginning to say, well hold
- 3:10on, is our tech stack that we have around us really the right
- 3:13one? We've been on Salesforce for a
- 3:16long time. We're Adobe for a long time.
- 3:18Yeah. And yeah, those are great
- 3:19platforms, but are they really delivering what we need for the
- 3:22future of where retail needs to be or the future of our brand?
- 3:26Are we able to rapidly innovate and build into the platform and
- 3:30connect to shoppers on whatever surface they are, the mobile,
- 3:33the tablets or, you know, live stream shopping, all these other
- 3:36things? So there's the ecom, digital
- 3:40marketers. CDOs are really looking at
- 3:44what's next in retail. Yeah, they're beginning to think
- 3:46about what do we need to have in terms of tech stack?
- 3:49Do we buy one from everybody? Yeah.
- 3:51Or can we think about things like Lego, right, and start to
- 3:54see we just need a advanced search and merge or we need to
- 3:57have a really good integrated CMS or we're going to have a
- 4:01really solid ERP or OMS or IMS, right?
- 4:04Yeah. It doesn't have to be all one
- 4:05platform, but we can integrate all these things, make it to
- 4:08what you want, right. So, you know, in the UK, right,
- 4:12where you're from, you know, the white stuff, Yeah, right.
- 4:14Or Ted Baker. Yeah, right.
- 4:18Other brands, look, Hurler, right, high end fashion, right.
- 4:21They're really looking at what they can do.
- 4:22Or again, I talked about B2B, think about MKM building
- 4:26supplies in the UK, right. So traditional building
- 4:29supplies, but they need to have a modern tech stack because we
- 4:32as consumers are buying things from them.
- 4:35But they also have that sort of wholesale distributors outside
- 4:38due to it that they need to provide that modern tech saying
- 4:40too, yeah, so we're seeing a lot of adjustment and people coming
- 4:44by the booth and saying, so tell me what you do and how you do it
- 4:47differently because we all say e-commerce and we all say
- 4:49online, right. What do you do differently?
- 4:51Checkout is strong for us. Building that composable
- 4:53platform, the integrations to get you live sooner is, is key
- 4:58as well. So those are the really rigid
- 5:00conversations we're having with people saying tell me more.
- 5:03How do you just out of curiosity the ecommerce like is there a
- 5:07post element? Do you connect to the post?
- 5:09Yep. Or is there is there a post
- 5:10version of what you do online? You know we we do have a point
- 5:14of sale integrations across many of the different point of sales.
- 5:16We have integrations to like you know all different PPS.
- 5:20You know whether you're using PayPal, Braintree or using Agen
- 5:24or you want to use Stripe or you only use advanced checkout
- 5:27Stripe link right one page checkout.
- 5:29Our role is to make e-commerce as seamless as possible.
- 5:33Not just for you as the administrator and the builder of
- 5:36your your site and the experience and embedding AR and
- 5:39virtual reality and all those other new things that are coming
- 5:42are using AI to to to really streamline things.
- 5:44Yeah. But also to make sure that
- 5:46you're connecting to the fastest checkout the the sort of Google
- 5:51pays and the apples and the wallets right Or getting into
- 5:54stripe link one page pass useless checkout and those are
- 5:57the punishes we have. And why is that important?
- 6:00Because if I'm a purchaser on a site, we're always, always
- 6:04getting interrupted and doing different things right.
- 6:07I wanna make sure that I'm giving you, as the brand or the
- 6:10retailer, the ability to check somebody out immediately without
- 6:13going to multiple pages. Yep, I want to give you the
- 6:16ability. If you are saying you know what,
- 6:18we see a lot of the demographics that we want to sell products to
- 6:24on Instagram or are on TikTok, we want to give you that ability
- 6:28to check out on into Instagram or shop on Instagram, right, and
- 6:32make it seamless, right. So having the integrations with
- 6:36our partnerships and our ecosystem is core to enable the
- 6:39brand and retailer really to grow and to acquire the shoppers
- 6:43wherever they are. In that instance, right.
- 6:46I my view is biassed by because of two things, emotional or
- 6:49neat, right? The emotion is, Oh my gosh, I
- 6:51love that blouse or I love those sneakers.
- 6:53I'm gonna have the same thing. So instead of an emotional, in
- 6:56the moment purchase, if you're doing the right retargeting or
- 6:59advertising, yeah, I want to be able to convert them right now.
- 7:02Or it's a. Need so looking forward, I mean
- 7:05interacting in one of the talks I was out there was talking
- 7:08about how every retailer will have its own AI, right As us as
- 7:13consumers will have our own AI retailers will have their
- 7:16version of AI and I guess that led itself to what you're
- 7:19saying. Do you build that yourself or do
- 7:20you buy into somebody else's vision of what you what you can
- 7:24have? So let me be a little bit
- 7:27controversial. AIAI is nothing new, right?
- 7:30We've used a I for a very long time in our lives.
- 7:34Retailers and brands have been using a, it's an algorithm,
- 7:36right? The algorithms have got smarter.
- 7:38They got speed and scale to them now and now we're infusing it
- 7:41with data, right. So that's the generative AI,
- 7:45that's the other things we got. So AI is nothing brand new, it's
- 7:48just speed, scale and then the incorporation of data right to
- 7:51it. We've been using AI in product
- 7:54data feeds to normalise data to optimise, give you a stronger
- 7:58return on ad spend, improve your ROI and essentially get your
- 8:01product described the right way for the different schemas.
- 8:04Sure. Instagram's requirement for how
- 8:06you describe a product is very different to TikTok is very
- 8:09different to Amazon. So, right.
- 8:11So we've been using AI to help really make sure that we remove
- 8:14that manual effort and streamline it.
- 8:16We've got a in the product, right.
- 8:18So if you're doing search recommendations, right, you've
- 8:21you've got inside it. I think AI as a whole including
- 8:24for B to B by the way is like in improving the the order
- 8:27management, right, or the invoice creation through AI
- 8:30because we know from history and from data what you're trying to
- 8:34do. So let's add those things in
- 8:36check mark instead of you manually putting the things into
- 8:39your your, your, your baskets and doing it.
- 8:41So we are embedding AI into the product, right.
- 8:43We're infusing it to help you make predictive analytics to
- 8:46show you what's going on into the data, into combining data
- 8:50leaks through, you know, Google Data Cloud and other things.
- 8:53So AI is big, right? I mean, I I can't walk around so
- 8:56many boos without seeing AI AI. AI, AI is the next step.
- 9:01But you've got to be cautious on AI as well.
- 9:04How are you going to use it, right.
- 9:05I I don't think chat bots are there right now when it comes to
- 9:07it. There's a booth opposite iOS
- 9:09that has a generator that has an AI, hey, I'm a AI person here to
- 9:13help you and you know it's AI, right.
- 9:16So I think we got to, we used to go, but for today's retailers
- 9:19and brands, look for the Econ platforms that are helping
- 9:25streamline and optimise what you've got today, help you
- 9:29generate your product listings and your descriptions, right.
- 9:31We've got things that are different variants during a blue
- 9:34sweater, right? You want to describe the
- 9:36material, you may have different colours, different sizes,
- 9:38different options. AI can help normalise that so
- 9:41you don't manually have to do it.
- 9:42And obviously wishing you, if we do things manually, we tend to
- 9:45err, yeah. So I think a I is is very
- 9:47beneficial in a lot of different things.
- 9:49Final thoughts in terms of where next NRF, yeah, we're coming
- 9:56back, Yep. What do you think you would have
- 9:59achieved, helped retailers achieve in 2024?
- 10:02What should they be doing in 20? 20 I'll tell you a couple of
- 10:05quick things. Optimising, normalising your
- 10:09product data feeds and speeds into as many channels as you can
- 10:12do. And that's one thing we can do
- 10:13real quick. Provide an ROI in about a month
- 10:16and show you the value of doing that and why.
- 10:19Return on ad spend improved average order value rate.
- 10:22All of the things that we wanted to wanted to do 2 would be speed
- 10:25of checkout, right? Making sure you got one page
- 10:28password. Let's check out on key PSP's and
- 10:32wallets. Apple, Google Pay, PayPal,
- 10:35Stripe, Adrian, maybe others in top of it too because they have
- 10:39to check the people out. And probably the third thing is
- 10:42showing that, you know, we have one of the fastest if not the
- 10:45fastest checkouts in the world on our platform for brands and
- 10:48retailers to use. Right.
- 10:50Perfect. Mayor, it's been.
- 10:52I don't need to check your surname again because that's
- 10:54good. That's good.
- 10:55Thank you. Cheers Alex.
- 10:56Good.
