Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the Happy Families podcast. It's the podcast for the
- 0:07Speaker 1: time poor parent who just once answers Now, all.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Right, that's enough. I can't take it anymore. We have
- 0:13Speaker 2: six daughters. This is not the example that we want
- 0:14Speaker 2: to be setting for them.
- 0:16Speaker 1: And now here's the scars of our show my mum
- 0:19Speaker 1: and dad.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Oh boy, it's so close now, Christmas just around the corner.
- 0:23Speaker 2: What have we got. Let's see some live matts, Kylie.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Fifteen days to go, ninth of December to the twenty fourth,
- 0:29Speaker 2: that's about right, right, fifteen days, fourteen days, depending on
- 0:32Speaker 2: how you count it.
- 0:33Speaker 3: I am an ostrich in the sand right now. I'm
- 0:36Speaker 3: just preturning. We've got a little bit longer.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, so much to do, so little time.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Earlier in the year, Kylie, by the way, I'm justin
- 0:44Speaker 2: your Kylie. Happy Families dot com dot au is where
- 0:47Speaker 2: you find out more about who we are and what
- 0:49Speaker 2: we do. But earlier in the year, we had a
- 0:53Speaker 2: conversation on the podcast about family road trips for the holidays.
- 0:58Speaker 2: We know that there's a chance there's a whole bunch
- 1:01Speaker 2: of people who are going to be getting in the
- 1:02Speaker 2: car and driving more than a couple of hours to
- 1:04Speaker 2: spend time with relatives this summer.
- 1:07Speaker 3: So we thought we'd replay this because I think that
- 1:09Speaker 3: it's going to make a difference to a whole heap
- 1:12Speaker 3: of families who find themselves stuck in a car.
- 1:15Speaker 4: For a long time.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And it was one of our favorite episodes, so we
- 1:18Speaker 2: think you're going to love it. Oh my goodness, I'm
- 1:27Speaker 2: so excited about this podcast because I have been through
- 1:31Speaker 2: the pain that long car trips require of families. Yet
- 1:36Speaker 2: many times are there yet? Did you remember a few
- 1:39Speaker 2: years ago we got the kids in the car, we
- 1:41Speaker 2: were driving from Wollongong to Coff's Harbor, and I said,
- 1:44Speaker 2: no screens, We're going to have a family weekend. We're
- 1:48Speaker 2: going to spend good quality time together, that we're not
- 1:50Speaker 2: going to look at screens. And that eight and a
- 1:52Speaker 2: half hours in the car was just torture.
- 1:56Speaker 3: I believe. But the next time we went and did
- 1:58Speaker 3: that same trip, we had actually in stalled screens behind each.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Of the right Yeah, yeah, because that was and had
- 2:06Speaker 4: the best trip ever.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Back in the day when you had to put DVD
- 2:09Speaker 2: players in the car because you couldn't just stream on
- 2:11Speaker 2: your phone, yeah we did. We had a good trip
- 2:13Speaker 2: the second time, because but but wouldn't it be great
- 2:16Speaker 2: if you could actually have some good quality family time
- 2:18Speaker 2: while you're driving with your kids. And we're not going
- 2:21Speaker 2: to go militant about screens or not screens. We're just
- 2:23Speaker 2: going to share a bunch of ideas with you about
- 2:25Speaker 2: how you can have high quality road trip time and
- 2:29Speaker 2: enjoy being with your family. We're dividing it up into
- 2:32Speaker 2: two sections. I can't wait to get section two because
- 2:34Speaker 2: this is where we're going to talk about music. But
- 2:36Speaker 2: in the first section, we've just got a whole lot
- 2:38Speaker 2: of I guess talkie kind of games.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Well, we put it out there on our Facebook page
- 2:43Speaker 3: and asked everybody to kind of give us some ideas
- 2:45Speaker 3: of what they do to keep things moving along in
- 2:47Speaker 3: the car, and we had some really really great So.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I see what you did there. I know I talked
- 2:53Speaker 2: over you. Sorry, but you said keep things moving along
- 2:55Speaker 2: in the car. That was That was really clever. I
- 2:57Speaker 2: we didn't even plan that. Well done, We've got a
- 3:00Speaker 2: lot to get through. We're probably going to have to
- 3:01Speaker 2: put these all in the show notes, and we might
- 3:03Speaker 2: even do a blog about it, an article on the website.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Because you're not going to hang onto all of these ideas.
- 3:08Speaker 2: This is the kind of episode that you want a
- 3:09Speaker 2: bookmark and come back to every time you've got a
- 3:12Speaker 2: road trip planned, because we have got so many brilliant ideas.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Let's do all the talkie kind of games and conversations first.
- 3:19Speaker 3: So a couple of weeks ago in i'ld Do Better
- 3:21Speaker 3: Tomorrow episode, we talked about two things that I had
- 3:25Speaker 3: done on a recent car trip, car bingo, where we
- 3:27Speaker 3: just picked a whole heap of things that we might
- 3:29Speaker 3: see on the road, and the kids had to kind
- 3:31Speaker 3: of try and find, you know, five in a row
- 3:33Speaker 3: of those.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So you've got to find like a garbage truck or
- 3:35Speaker 2: an aeroplane flying over here, red letterbox, or a kangaroo
- 3:39Speaker 2: or an emu or something like that. Yeah, yeah, cool.
- 3:41Speaker 3: And then the second one was those conversation starters, little
- 3:44Speaker 3: cards that you can have that just give you a
- 3:45Speaker 3: whole heap of just one sentence, one question, and you
- 3:48Speaker 3: can ask each other those questions, which is the fun.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, because we get to explore stories of our lives
- 3:54Speaker 2: with our children and they love that. So what did
- 3:57Speaker 2: our Facebook followers have to say? We've got If you're
- 3:59Speaker 2: not on a Facebook page. By the way, I think
- 4:01Speaker 2: we've got about one hundred and seventy five thousand Facebook followers.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Jump on, become part of the community. It's a great
- 4:07Speaker 2: group of people. It's a big group, but it's a
- 4:08Speaker 2: great group of people.
- 4:09Speaker 3: What do they have to say, Well, the number one
- 4:12Speaker 3: there was two games that were just the favorites.
- 4:16Speaker 4: Were I Spy. Everybody knows I Spy, but there was
- 4:19Speaker 4: a couple of variations to that. There might have been
- 4:21Speaker 4: I Spy yellow or for younger kids, right okay, and
- 4:25Speaker 4: then Spoto.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Oh yeah, the two most are going to sound like
- 4:30Speaker 2: I'm a real grump in the car both of those games.
- 4:32Speaker 2: You know, I don't like Spoto because one of our
- 4:34Speaker 2: kids punches us every time we see a yellow car.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Spott O. It's like, we're not a hissing family. Stop
- 4:40Speaker 2: hitting me. I don't like being punched by my thirteen
- 4:42Speaker 2: year old.
- 4:43Speaker 3: No.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Well, what used to happen more than anything was no
- 4:45Speaker 4: I got that spot.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I saw it, the fights, the fights over who saw
- 4:49Speaker 2: the yellow car like. So be warned that if you're
- 4:52Speaker 2: doing competitive stuff, it can turn ugly. So if people
- 4:56Speaker 2: don't know how to play Spotto. By the way, it's
- 4:58Speaker 2: pretty much every time a yellow car goes past, the
- 5:00Speaker 2: first person to say spotto.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Well, there's lots of variations.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Some people had concrete trucks, some people had Mini Coopers.
- 5:06Speaker 4: It's really up to you, whatever you want.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and our kids have actually added a variation as well.
- 5:09Speaker 2: I don't know if you know about this one, but
- 5:10Speaker 2: every time a green car goes past, you know what
- 5:13Speaker 2: they say, I'm so sorry to any green car drivers.
- 5:18Speaker 4: We invented it with the kids another family. Every time
- 5:21Speaker 4: a Mustang came past, it was motto, that's great.
- 5:25Speaker 3: I like that.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Okay, let's do a few others really quickly. What else.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I went to the shops and I brought.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Oh, gosh, no ah, that is the most brain numbing.
- 5:36Speaker 2: It's actually really good for your memory. I get it,
- 5:38Speaker 2: but I just it's like my grandmother went to the
- 5:40Speaker 2: shops and she bought I went on holidays and I
- 5:43Speaker 2: brought you.
- 5:45Speaker 4: To be down.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Well, I'm looking forward to the singing games. I just
- 5:48Speaker 2: like singing. I'm not very good.
- 5:49Speaker 3: But a couple of others. The Alphabet game. We actually
- 5:52Speaker 3: love playing this game. As the kids have gotten older,
- 5:54Speaker 3: it's really good for emerging readers to recognize their letters.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And so the object is you literally are just collecting lads,
- 6:00Speaker 3: whether it be from.
- 6:02Speaker 4: Your number plates or from billboards.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Cart streets on you. And it's got to be alphabeticalized.
- 6:07Speaker 2: So you're looking for an A. So we'll be like
- 6:10Speaker 2: A in Warhope. I don't know why I said Warhape
- 6:14Speaker 2: a in Brisbane. So you've just got to find the
- 6:16Speaker 2: letter in a word or on a number plate.
- 6:18Speaker 3: You know.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I saw a V on that car going pass and
- 6:19Speaker 2: you've got to do it in order, and it's kind
- 6:21Speaker 2: of a race. We've decided that if I'm driving, I
- 6:24Speaker 2: can't play that game because I get a bit competitive
- 6:26Speaker 2: and stop watching the road. Really, it's a very dangerous
- 6:29Speaker 2: game to play if you're driving.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And a game that I've never played before, but you
- 6:33Speaker 3: used to play it as a kid.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Car cricket cricket. So my dad was a furniture removalist.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Mum and dad ran a furniture moving company when I
- 6:40Speaker 2: was a kid, and I used to sit in the
- 6:41Speaker 2: truck driving from the New South Wales Central Coast up
- 6:43Speaker 2: to the Gold Coast or Brisbane. Every holiday. Dad and
- 6:47Speaker 2: I would go and do furniture removals and I spent
- 6:49Speaker 2: hours playing car cricket, and basically a car is worth
- 6:52Speaker 2: one run, a car with the trailer is worth four,
- 6:54Speaker 2: a car with a caravan is worth six. And if
- 6:58Speaker 2: you see any motorcyles or any trucks or buses, you're out.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Of course, there's ten wickets, so you've got to lose
- 7:06Speaker 2: ten wickets, get as many runs as you can. Then
- 7:08Speaker 2: the other person's in for their innings.
- 7:09Speaker 4: You know, my head is hurting. Now, how am I
- 7:11Speaker 4: supposed to remember?
- 7:13Speaker 2: It's not hard? One, four, six, and then you're out
- 7:16Speaker 2: with the other stock.
- 7:17Speaker 5: What's before a car with the trailer, of course the
- 7:21Speaker 5: answer yeah, But it's fun to play at night because
- 7:23Speaker 5: there's lots of trucks and you get out really fast,
- 7:25Speaker 5: and sometimes you only get two or three runs, and
- 7:27Speaker 5: all these trucks.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Just so, the last time I'm going to share with
- 7:30Speaker 3: you came in from one of our followers and she
- 7:32Speaker 3: calls it truck truck car bus and the object is
- 7:35Speaker 3: to just guess what the next four cars will be. Okay,
- 7:38Speaker 3: well the next four vehicles, and so in this case
- 7:40Speaker 3: she's guessing that the next four vehicles are going to
- 7:43Speaker 3: be a truck truck car and a bus.
- 7:45Speaker 2: So if I'm on the freeway, I'm going to say car, car, car, cars,
- 7:48Speaker 2: because there's going to be a whole bunch of cars
- 7:50Speaker 2: and I'm probably going to get that right. Is that
- 7:51Speaker 2: the idea?
- 7:52Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:52Speaker 3: And the idea is you want to do it before
- 7:54Speaker 3: there's any cars in front of your there is any vehicles.
- 7:57Speaker 3: So I would suggest that this is on a long
- 7:59Speaker 3: car trip. You're kind of dealing with long highway stretches
- 8:02Speaker 3: where you're not, you know, on busy freeways.
- 8:03Speaker 4: I don't think it would work as well.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Up next, we're going to play or talk about the
- 8:07Speaker 2: funnest games ever, the Singing Games.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's their Happy Families podcast for.
- 8:13Speaker 2: A happier family.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Try a Happy Families membership, because a happy family doesn't
- 8:18Speaker 3: just happen.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Details at happy families dot com dot au.
- 8:23Speaker 3: It's the Happy Families podcast, the podcast for the time
- 8:25Speaker 3: poor parent who just wants answers now, and today we
- 8:28Speaker 3: are talking about how we deal with that question are
- 8:32Speaker 3: we there yet?
- 8:34Speaker 2: So we've talked about all the talkie games. Now it's
- 8:36Speaker 2: signed for the singing games. Some families have really got
- 8:40Speaker 2: the whole singing thing down pat like the kids in
- 8:43Speaker 2: Step Run the game was really nailed at this time.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Here we go a wan two, A one two three four.
- 8:57Speaker 6: She's gonna smar That is, to me reminds me of
- 9:02Speaker 6: childhood memories whereverything was as fresh as a bright blue sky.
- 9:10Speaker 2: How good are me? You're the oldest I'm counting on you.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Come on, she's got us.
- 9:14Speaker 1: The blueis guys.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I can't take it because this is really hard to
- 9:21Speaker 2: listen to, because last time we tried singing in the
- 9:23Speaker 2: car it sounded more like this.
- 9:25Speaker 6: I've seen the place, I tell them.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. We're not even in the same in
- 9:47Speaker 2: the same galaxy of talent as the anyway, So what
- 9:50Speaker 2: are the singing games? Because sing alongs are fun? But
- 9:53Speaker 2: you've actually got some games that have come through as suggestions, well.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Old McDonald for young McDonald, especially when you're you know,
- 10:00Speaker 3: driving the countryside. You can find animals as you go, yep,
- 10:03Speaker 3: and add them to the equation. The acknowledgment in one
- 10:06Speaker 3: of the messages was just that they might have ended
- 10:09Speaker 3: up with a few dinosaurs in there.
- 10:12Speaker 4: In their farm.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Well why not that? That just reminds me actually of
- 10:16Speaker 2: you've probably heard of Well maybe you haven't heard of it,
- 10:19Speaker 2: but there's a group called The Go and a Gang
- 10:20Speaker 2: and they're on Spotify and they've done a whole lot
- 10:22Speaker 2: of kids stuff and they just make song time in
- 10:26Speaker 2: the car with the little kids loads of fun because
- 10:30Speaker 2: you've got stuff like this, and then there's build them U,
- 10:36Speaker 2: build them up. I remember that from play school our kids.
- 10:39Speaker 2: It's so lovely there eventually anyway, so there's all that
- 10:41Speaker 2: sort of stuff. What what what old McDonald yep?
- 10:44Speaker 4: Okay, Next, Bingo?
- 10:46Speaker 2: What Bingo? I thought we were playing Bingo as a
- 10:48Speaker 2: talking game.
- 10:49Speaker 4: This is a song.
- 10:50Speaker 2: Okay.
- 10:51Speaker 3: There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was
- 10:53Speaker 3: his name. O b I g o b I g
- 10:57Speaker 3: o b i ng o and Bingo.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Was his But that's just a song. What's the point
- 11:01Speaker 2: of that.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Well, the idea is the next time we sing it,
- 11:03Speaker 3: we're going to take away the B and so we
- 11:05Speaker 3: have to clap and then do I g oh, and
- 11:08Speaker 3: then we're going to clap again for the third verse
- 11:10Speaker 3: and we're going to do.
- 11:11Speaker 2: B ng o oh ng Okay, all right, So that's
- 11:15Speaker 2: there's some coordination that's great for kids, for little kids,
- 11:18Speaker 2: What about for bigger kids?
- 11:20Speaker 4: This is the song that never ends?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Oh yeah, this is the song that never ends. I
- 11:25Speaker 2: don't know the tune problem.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yes, it goes on and on. My friends, some people
- 11:30Speaker 4: started singing and not knowing what it was. Why are
- 11:32Speaker 4: you laughing at me?
- 11:33Speaker 2: You've got a great voice. And then the continued singing
- 11:37Speaker 2: it forever, just because this is the song that never ends,
- 11:39Speaker 2: and it starts all over again. It's torture. We're supposed
- 11:42Speaker 2: to be trying to help people have a nice card.
- 11:44Speaker 4: T Well, my.
- 11:44Speaker 3: Absolute favorite over the last few years is Peel the avocado.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I don't know the tuna boid just came out and
- 11:54Speaker 2: the girl was like, what are you doing?
- 12:01Speaker 3: And the YouTube clip is you have to watch it
- 12:03Speaker 3: if you definitely look it up, it's worth a worth
- 12:07Speaker 3: a good laugh. But the highlight of all of the
- 12:10Speaker 3: comments that came through this would be my number one pick.
- 12:15Speaker 4: Well, it's actually ours because we had lots to talk
- 12:17Speaker 4: about this one.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Yep.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Somebody said they play the fart game.
- 12:22Speaker 2: Which is really a word replacement game. What happens is
- 12:24Speaker 2: you find any song that has the word heart in
- 12:28Speaker 2: the title or in the lyrics and you change it
- 12:31Speaker 2: too fart. So we did a little bit.
- 12:34Speaker 4: I think they must have a few boys in there.
- 12:35Speaker 2: We did a little bit of googling, and I thought, well,
- 12:38Speaker 2: this this would be fun to sing because if we're
- 12:43Speaker 2: changing heart to fart.
- 12:47Speaker 7: That and then if you if you don't want Selene
- 12:56Speaker 7: because I don't know, it doesn't work slow, and yeah,
- 12:58Speaker 7: it's a bit dreary, and and maybe we want something
- 13:01Speaker 7: a little bit old or something from the eighties.
- 13:03Speaker 2: There's Elton John and Kiki d. Don't go breaking a
- 13:06Speaker 2: what I gave you my fart? This is so rude.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I gave you my fart.
- 13:18Speaker 6: Don't go breaking far.
- 13:20Speaker 2: I can't believe what have we become? What has this
- 13:23Speaker 2: podcast become?
- 13:25Speaker 4: I'm blaming Rebecca for this one.
- 13:26Speaker 2: My favorite one of all of them, just while we're
- 13:28Speaker 2: being absolutely ridiculous was rock set listen to the fart?
- 13:39Speaker 2: All right, that's enough. I can't take it anymore. We
- 13:42Speaker 2: have six daughters. This is not the example that we
- 13:43Speaker 2: want to be setting for them. You want to have
- 13:46Speaker 2: fun on a car trip, this is the way to
- 13:48Speaker 2: do it, right, Yeah, I think so. The last one
- 13:51Speaker 2: I'm going to add it in.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Okay, okay, Adam said stay quiet or else that's a
- 13:55Speaker 3: good game.
- 13:56Speaker 4: Let's just quiet game.
- 13:57Speaker 2: So who can stay the quiet for the longest. Yeah,
- 14:00Speaker 2: so after.
- 14:01Speaker 3: We've had lots and lots of fun, that might be
- 14:03Speaker 3: one to just finish things off.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Just look out the window, kids, Just look out the
- 14:07Speaker 2: window and soak it in. If you're going on a cartridge.
- 14:11Speaker 2: If I hope that that's been helpful, I don't know
- 14:15Speaker 2: how many of them we're really going to try. I
- 14:17Speaker 2: actually think there's some fun ideas there though. The Happy
- 14:20Speaker 2: Family's podcast is produced by Justin Rulan from Bridge Media.
