Christmas at Sea

"Christmas at Sea" puts readers aboard a storm-battered ship fighting desperately to avoid a rocky coastline on Christmas morning. As the crew tacks all day through freezing winds and crashing surf, the narrator catches sight of the very house where he was born — his mother's silver spectacles, the firelight dancing on china plates, his parents growing older without him. The poem captures the crushing ache of a man caught between duty and belonging, watching warmth and family pass just beyond reach.
