- 1:25All right, guys.
- 1:26So we've been doing a lot of cool
- 1:28stuff this week, and we've been talking about
- 1:30something pretty important.
- 1:31You know what that is?
- 1:32That's momentum.
- 1:33Momentum is something I think a lot of
- 1:35people today don't realize that much, but it
- 1:40is the key to helping you become a
- 1:43better version of yourself.
- 1:45So let's go ahead, ladies and gentlemen, and
- 1:47let's take this away.
- 1:49All right.
- 1:50So as I said, welcome, everyone, to the
- 1:53ever-popular Inspirations for Your Life show.
- 1:56I am your host, John C.
- 1:58Morley, serial entrepreneur, engineer, marketing specialist, video producer,
- 2:01podcast host, coach, keynote speaker, passionate lifelong learner,
- 2:04graduate student at Montclair State University, and so
- 2:07grateful now to be a published author.
- 2:11Yes, our weekly topic is momentum, in case
- 2:14you didn't know.
- 2:17Momentum changes everything.
- 2:19We've been talking about something almost everyone experiences.
- 2:23If you feel like you're getting nowhere, keep
- 2:26going.
- 2:28Have you ever worked hard, made sacrifices, and
- 2:32wondered whether anything is even changing?
- 2:35You're showing up.
- 2:37You're trying.
- 2:38But the results aren't there yet.
- 2:40Before you decide you're failing, consider this for
- 2:43a moment.
- 2:44What if you're making more progress than you
- 2:47actually realize?
- 2:49Hmm.
- 2:50First, progress can exist before results become visible.
- 2:54That's true, guys.
- 2:55Think about planting a seed.
- 2:58Nothing appears above the soil at first, but
- 3:01roots are developing underneath.
- 3:04Your progress can work the same way.
- 3:08Second, some growth happens beneath the surface, guys.
- 3:12It's kind of like, you know, the glaciers,
- 3:14right, and the ice.
- 3:17There's real big ice peaks at the bottom.
- 3:20The top is just a tiny part of
- 3:22it.
- 3:24So what I want you guys to know
- 3:27is that your judgment improves your confidence.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:34And it develops.
- 3:35Your ability to solve problems increases these changes,
- 3:40and they matter even when nobody notices them.
- 3:45Third, stop using immediate results as your only
- 3:49measurement.
- 3:51Views, sales, followers, and responses don't tell the
- 3:55complete story of who you really are.
- 3:57Ask what you've learned and what you can
- 4:01do better today.
- 4:02Fourth, mention as repetition builds capability.
- 4:11As an engineer, I understand that reliable systems
- 4:14require testing and refinement.
- 4:17Every meaningful repetition creates another opportunity to improve.
- 4:24Fifth, difficult days, they count, guys.
- 4:28Some days bring interpretations, setbacks, and frustrations.
- 4:33If you still make meaningful progress, that effort
- 4:35counts.
- 4:36Sixth, slow down.
- 4:40Progress remains progress.
- 4:43We don't need to rush it.
- 4:45Speed isn't everything, guys.
- 4:48Direction matters.
- 4:49Even a small step forward can bring you
- 4:51closer to something important.
- 4:55Seventh, your timeline does not invalidate your effort.
- 4:59Somebody else's achievements don't determine your schedule.
- 5:04Their resources and circumstances may be different.
- 5:07Measure your growth against your starting point.
- 5:10Eighth, separate frustration from failure.
- 5:14Feeling frustrated doesn't automatically mean you're failing.
- 5:16Sometimes expectations haven't matched results.
- 5:20Evaluate before deciding what that actually means to
- 5:23you.
- 5:26Ninth, one disappointing result does not erase previous
- 5:30growth.
- 5:31A project or presentation may not go as
- 5:35planned.
- 5:36That's one experience.
- 5:38It doesn't erase everything you've learned.
- 5:41So let's not throw the whole thing away
- 5:44because there's some important lessons that we need
- 5:46to learn so we can move forward in
- 5:49our life.
- 5:50That's probably the most important thing that I
- 5:54can tell you guys.
- 5:55It's probably the most important thing that I
- 5:57can tell you for people to understand.
- 6:02Very, very important thing.
- 6:07And 10th, give good strengths and strategies enough
- 6:15time to work.
- 6:16See, some approaches require consistent execution.
- 6:21Don't abandon a reasonable strategy simply because, well,
- 6:24success hasn't arrived yet.
- 6:27There's no way to give up.
- 6:28Because your train, your plane, your boat, it
- 6:32may just be on its way.
- 6:35And you giving up might tell it to
- 6:37turn around.
- 6:38Eleventh, evaluate before you ever abandon a thought.
- 6:42Is the goal still important to you right
- 6:45now?
- 6:45Is the strategy you're using effective?
- 6:48Have you measured the right things?
- 6:51Make decisions using evidence, not disappointment.
- 6:56Twelfth, adjust what's ineffective without quitting everything.
- 7:02I think a lot of people, when they
- 7:03hear something's not working, they're like, oh, you
- 7:04know, I'm just going to stop.
- 7:06But wait a minute, you're doing a lot
- 7:08of it right.
- 7:09And I think that's a big thing for
- 7:11people.
- 7:12Like, you don't need to stop, right?
- 7:14Think about what you need to change, right?
- 7:18Adjust what's ineffective without quitting everything.
- 7:20So maybe your message needs some tweaking and
- 7:23improvement.
- 7:23Or your process needs simplified, right?
- 7:27Change the method without automatically abandoning the mission.
- 7:31I think sometimes we like to do things
- 7:32that are complicated because we think they're going
- 7:34to yield results.
- 7:36But you know what I found out?
- 7:37It's the simple things that get people's attention.
- 7:41Thirteen, motivation naturally rises and it falls.
- 7:47Nobody feels inspired every day.
- 7:50Motivation changes with every circumstance you have.
- 7:55Your progress cannot depend entirely on excitement, guys.
- 7:59I'm sorry, you've got to use discipline, right?
- 8:02Because our motivation will go up, it'll go
- 8:06down.
- 8:07Create routines, right?
- 8:10Number fourteen, your system must survive low motivation
- 8:14days.
- 8:14So create those routines.
- 8:16Know your next stop.
- 8:18Keep materials organized.
- 8:19Make useful actions easier when enthusiasm disappears.
- 8:24Fifteen, reduce the task instead of abandoning it.
- 8:29Plan two hours, but only have 15 minutes.
- 8:34Use those 15 minutes that you have for
- 8:37something meaningful in your life.
- 8:39Smaller progress, guys, it still counts.
- 8:42One step still counts, right?
- 8:45You have to take a step before you
- 8:46can take a journey of a million miles.
- 8:51Sixteenth, protect the habit when energy is limited.
- 8:55I think this concept gets people confused.
- 9:00They feel that they're not able to move
- 9:02forward because of something somebody else said, because
- 9:06of a certain situation, but that may not
- 9:09be the real answer, guys.
- 9:11That may not be the real answer, and
- 9:13I think that's a problem for so many
- 9:15people.
- 9:16They think that because somebody else said, oh,
- 9:18you're not good enough, you're not this, you're
- 9:19not that.
- 9:20That's not you, you know?
- 9:22And you won't perform at your highest level
- 9:26every single day, let's face it.
- 9:28Choose a manageable action that keeps you connected
- 9:32to your commitment.
- 9:34It could be something very small, but it
- 9:36will keep you connected, it'll keep you grounded.
- 9:40I think that's why people go off track.
- 9:44They lose gratitude, they lose hope, they lose
- 9:51the ambition, the desire.
- 9:55Seventeenth, do the minimum that keeps momentum alive.
- 10:01Write one paragraph, review one page, make one
- 10:07important call.
- 10:08The minimum keeps us moving when circumstances become
- 10:12difficult around us.
- 10:15Eighteen, remember why you started without romanticizing the
- 10:21beginning.
- 10:23That's a real important one.
- 10:26I think sometimes we go back to the
- 10:28beginning because we think that's all we have,
- 10:30but we forget all the wonderful things that
- 10:33we've been doing in our life, right?
- 10:35Those wonderful things are pretty amazing in our
- 10:39lives.
- 10:40They're extremely, extremely powerful, right?
- 10:45I think that's the most important thing that
- 10:47I can tell you guys, right?
- 10:49It's probably the most important thing that I
- 10:52can tell you, but it causes a lot
- 10:55of people to stop early.
- 10:59Nineteen, compare your capability now with your capability
- 11:04before.
- 11:05I wanna tie this to a story of
- 11:08actually, an elephant, an elephant many years ago.
- 11:13So this elephant, you might've heard me tell
- 11:14the story before.
- 11:16So the elephant, when the elephant was a
- 11:18baby calf, was tied to a stake with
- 11:21a chain, right?
- 11:25Very small elephant.
- 11:27So people often ask me this question, how
- 11:30small, this is great, how small and heavy
- 11:34is a baby elephant?
- 11:38Well, basically most newborns average 200 pounds, which
- 11:46is heavier than many adult humans.
- 11:48African elephant calves tend to slightly be larger
- 11:52than Asian elephant calves.
- 11:54They stand roughly three feet tall at the
- 11:57shoulder when they're born.
- 11:59They grow very fast and can gain up
- 12:01to 200 pounds per week by drinking nutrient
- 12:05rich milk.
- 12:08So the thing you're probably wondering is, what
- 12:14am I saying?
- 12:14Why am I saying this?
- 12:19A baby elephant is small in the sense
- 12:24of nature, but 200 pounds, they're often very
- 12:27friendly, but they can be very dangerous, okay?
- 12:33When elephants are born, they like to play
- 12:36with things like kittens for the first time.
- 12:42And, but the thing they have to realize
- 12:45is they gotta be reminded to be gentle
- 12:47because in their playful nature, they're rough.
- 12:50I mean, their body is heavy.
- 12:52Even though they're not intentionally trying to hurt
- 12:54you, they are rough because of their massive
- 13:00size, right?
- 13:04Baby elephants, like I said, weigh 200, 250
- 13:06pounds.
- 13:07Imagine you being stomped over with a 250
- 13:10pound elephant.
- 13:11Now, here's the caveat.
- 13:15This elephant was tied up at a stake,
- 13:19baby elephant.
- 13:22And the elephant couldn't break free from the
- 13:26stake right away.
- 13:29The elephant got a little bit older, maybe
- 13:32a few weeks later, tried again, tried a
- 13:35month or two later, tried again.
- 13:36After a few months, the elephant gave up.
- 13:39She's like, John, how did an elephant like
- 13:41not be able to, you know, how could
- 13:43you, you know, keep an elephant on a
- 13:47chain or a stick or something like that?
- 13:50The elephant was conditioned with its mind, thinking
- 13:53that it didn't have the ability.
- 13:56It didn't know that it had more power
- 13:59because see, as you get older, you grow,
- 14:03you get stronger, right?
- 14:06And as you get stronger, life actually changes.
- 14:11Life actually changes.
- 14:13And that's the difference of you becoming a
- 14:18better version of yourself.
- 14:20So I say this because if we all
- 14:22act like that elephant and we gave up
- 14:25after the first few months, we'd never go
- 14:29anywhere.
- 14:31Just because something is hard doesn't mean you
- 14:34shouldn't do it.
- 14:37A lot of people that find things difficult
- 14:38to just give up early because they don't
- 14:41wanna put up with it.
- 14:42But see, success does not live where it's
- 14:48easy.
- 14:50It starts where it's complicated.
- 14:52I think that's a very important thing for
- 14:55us to understand, where it gets complicated.
- 15:02That's pretty powerful, guys.
- 15:05Don't be like that elephant, okay?
- 15:07Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying.
- 15:10If the elephant would have waited a few
- 15:11more months, that elephant would have crushed that
- 15:13metal stake.
- 15:16So you're probably saying to me, John, well,
- 15:18how heavy would an elephant become in a
- 15:26year?
- 15:26Let's just think about that.
- 15:29So in a year, okay, it would reach
- 15:34roughly 800 to 1,000 pounds.
- 15:36That's easy to crush a stake, let alone
- 15:39hurt a human.
- 15:41They mean to be docile, but because their
- 15:44body is so massive it can hurt people.
- 15:51Number 19, compare your capability now with capability
- 15:55you had before.
- 15:56And I say this to you again, because
- 15:57what once intimidated you, what can you handle
- 16:01confidently today?
- 16:03These improvements demonstrate growth you may have overlooked.
- 16:06Like the elephant, that's why I wanted to
- 16:07repeat that.
- 16:1020, difficult seasons can develop endurance.
- 16:15Challenges can strengthen patience and adaptability.
- 16:19We don't need to celebrate hardship to recognize
- 16:22what we learn while navigating it.
- 16:24I think sometimes we have challenges and then
- 16:26all we do is remember the challenge.
- 16:28We need to throw away what felt bad
- 16:31and just keep the lesson.
- 16:33I've told a lot of clients that are
- 16:34like, oh, you don't know what I went
- 16:35through.
- 16:36I do, forget about the hard time, learn
- 16:41from it.
- 16:42Learn from it, know the lesson.
- 16:49So stop expecting every day to feel inspirational.
- 16:54Some days are exciting, others are ordinary or
- 16:58exhausting.
- 17:00Meaningful progress can happen without extraordinary feelings, 22.
- 17:07Discipline carries you when excitement fades.
- 17:11And discipline should be your marker every day.
- 17:16Discipline should be getting you out of bed.
- 17:18Discipline should be doing things.
- 17:19Of course, there's great things you like to
- 17:20do in life, but discipline should be the
- 17:23primary.
- 17:26Discipline means following through on reasonable commitments.
- 17:32Your goals remain important, even when enthusiasm changes
- 17:36or like I said, it wanes or drops
- 17:38off, 23.
- 17:41Rest can support momentum.
- 17:44When used intentionally, that is.
- 17:46Keep going doesn't mean exhausting yourself, doesn't mean
- 17:50going through burnout.
- 17:52A purposeful break can improve concentration, judgment and
- 17:57energy, 22.
- 17:5924, recovery is part of sustainable progress.
- 18:04Systems need maintenance and people need recovery.
- 18:08Sleep, boundaries and realistic workloads protect long-term
- 18:13performance, 25.
- 18:17Give yourself permission to move slowly.
- 18:22I think a lot of people, they wanna
- 18:24race to the end, right?
- 18:27You've had the people, I'm sure that for
- 18:30whatever reason, they try to put the desk
- 18:35together, but they haven't even looked at the
- 18:36instructions.
- 18:36They say, oh, I know what I'm doing.
- 18:39And they break it.
- 18:39You've had probably friends like this, right?
- 18:42Not you.
- 18:43And when somebody doesn't pay attention and they
- 18:47just kind of push all the way through,
- 18:50they miss the whole point.
- 18:55So you gotta give yourself permission to move
- 18:58slowly.
- 18:58You might say, well, gee, I'm never gonna
- 19:00get anywhere.
- 19:01So does anybody know what is the slowest
- 19:04animal?
- 19:07What is the slowest animal in the world?
- 19:09Anybody know what it is?
- 19:10If you had to take a guess right
- 19:11now, what's the slowest animal in the world?
- 19:13It's a three-toed sloth.
- 19:16It's recognized as the slowest mammal and land
- 19:19on earth, moving at top speeds of 0
- 19:23.15 miles per hour.
- 19:27Sloths are mostly leaves, which provide very little
- 19:31nutrition or calories.
- 19:32They have slow metabolism.
- 19:33They have extremely low metabolic rates, meaning they
- 19:36process food very slowly, sometimes taking up to
- 19:39a month to digest a single meal.
- 19:41Yeah.
- 19:42Energy conservation to avoid running out of energy.
- 19:45They have 50% less muscle mass than
- 19:48other mammals of a similar size and more
- 19:51deliberately, they do that.
- 19:53Survival tactics, moving slowly, helps them blend into
- 19:57the trees and avoids attracting the attention of
- 19:59predators like jaguars and harpy eagles, which rely
- 20:04on the sight and movement to be able
- 20:07to hunt.
- 20:10That's pretty amazing.
- 20:12So we've got to understand that.
- 20:14You may be balancing work, education, family, right?
- 20:19And unexperienced situations that you're not used to
- 20:24and unexpected responsibilities.
- 20:28Choose a realistic pace that allows you to
- 20:32continue.
- 20:32I'm not saying to burn yourself out.
- 20:34Let me be very clear about that.
- 20:3626, keep collecting evidence that you can continue.
- 20:40Remember the challenges you've navigated and skills you've
- 20:43developed?
- 20:44Your past progress provides evidence of your ability
- 20:47to move forward.
- 20:50So it's your past and how the fact
- 20:54that you reflect on it's like, hey, I
- 20:56did that before.
- 20:58You can do it again.
- 21:0027, your breakthrough may require more repetitions than
- 21:04expected, right?
- 21:06When you're first learning how to hit a
- 21:08bat or like to golf, drive a golf
- 21:12ball, you might need more repetitions than just
- 21:14a few.
- 21:18You may need additional practice to find that.
- 21:21Or additional strategies, perspectives.
- 21:27Keep learning rather than repeating ineffective methods.
- 21:32Einstein said it before, insanity, doing the same
- 21:35thing over and over again, expecting to results.
- 21:37If you don't change what you're doing, you're
- 21:39never gonna change your outcome.
- 21:4328, stay flexible about the route.
- 21:48Your destination may remain important even when the
- 21:51original path changes.
- 21:53Adaptability helps you explore better approaches.
- 21:5729, keep your commitment stronger than today's frustration.
- 22:04One disappointing afternoon should not automatically determine the
- 22:08future of an important goal.
- 22:10Give yourself perspective before making permanent decisions.
- 22:15And now our 30th and final point for
- 22:21today.
- 22:22Sometimes the most powerful progress is simply continuing.
- 22:28Not announcing another enormous breakthrough or goal.
- 22:33Not making dramatic promises.
- 22:37Simply living, showing up consistently again and again
- 22:41and again.
- 22:43Learn something.
- 22:45Make an adjustment in your life.
- 22:48Add something, delete something.
- 22:50Taking another meaningful step.
- 22:53Putting one foot in front of the other.
- 22:56There are gonna be days, ladies and gentlemen,
- 22:58when progress feels invisible.
- 23:02Days when you question your effort.
- 23:04Days when you've been tempted to walk away.
- 23:09But progress doesn't always look like a breakthrough.
- 23:14Sometimes it means maintaining a habit.
- 23:18Sometimes it means recovering from a setback.
- 23:23Sometimes it means finding a better approach.
- 23:27And sometimes it means saying, I'm not finished
- 23:32yet.
- 23:33And a lot of you are not finished
- 23:34yet.
- 23:35In fact, we're never finished.
- 23:36As long as we're here breathing, we're not
- 23:38finished.
- 23:39Here's my challenge for all of you.
- 23:42Think about one meaningful goal where you're discouraged
- 23:47right now.
- 23:50Ask yourself three important questions.
- 23:52You ready?
- 23:54What progress have I already made toward that
- 23:57goal?
- 23:59What needs to change in my life so
- 24:02I can get to the goal faster?
- 24:04What is one thing or a useful action
- 24:09I can take right now to get closer
- 24:14to that goal?
- 24:15Then ladies and gentlemen, don't procrastinate.
- 24:17Take the action.
- 24:19Not because success is guaranteed tomorrow, but because
- 24:23every step offers another opportunity to learn and
- 24:26improve and become a better version of ourselves.
- 24:28And that's what we all want here, isn't
- 24:30it?
- 24:30Sure it is.
- 24:31Our weekly topic is momentum changes everything.
- 24:35But the choice to keep moving is all
- 24:38up to you.
- 24:39Momentum doesn't always mean moving quickly.
- 24:43Sometimes it means moving wisely.
- 24:49Sometimes it means adjusting to our surroundings.
- 24:53And sometimes it means continuing when results haven't
- 25:00arrived yet.
- 25:01You might be unhappy because you're not getting
- 25:04what you expect.
- 25:06Do it anyway.
- 25:11And I think if you could reflect back
- 25:13on things in your life that were positive,
- 25:14that'll give you not only the motivation, but
- 25:18hopefully even more discipline to say, wait a
- 25:20minute, I'm pretty smart, or I'm pretty strong,
- 25:22or I'm pretty this.
- 25:24And I could definitely do this.
- 25:28People overlook that.
- 25:33People overlook that.
- 25:36You have to continue when results haven't arrived
- 25:40yet.
- 25:44You might say to me, John, why?
- 25:47Well, if we look at every inventor in
- 25:49the world, every successful person, they all had
- 25:52some type of challenge in their life and
- 25:55they push forward.
- 25:58The question I have is why don't you
- 26:02wanna push forward?
- 26:04That's what I wanna know.
- 26:07If they all push forward and they became
- 26:09successful, you can too.
- 26:14I'm not gonna tell you it's gonna be
- 26:16a slam dunk.
- 26:18It's not.
- 26:20It definitely is not something you're gonna slam
- 26:23dunk in, but it's something that I think
- 26:25we need to become mindful of and the
- 26:29more mindful of it, guess what happens?
- 26:30We start to achieve reality.
- 26:33We start to be like, wow, I'm actually
- 26:34doing pretty cool.
- 26:36Yes, you are.
- 26:38But if you constantly say, I can't do
- 26:41this, I can't do that, you cause your
- 26:46brain and body to slow down because it
- 26:51causes a decrease in what's released in your
- 26:56brain, the dopamine.
- 26:59And when we have less dopamine, we have
- 27:01less energy.
- 27:03The dopamine's like a natural high of drug
- 27:05that we get.
- 27:08It's a chemical reaction.
- 27:10These are important things.
- 27:12Ladies and gentlemen, I am John C.
