- 1:16Who are the members of Cross Guild?
- 1:18We're going to be asking this question and a lot more in today's episode of Systematicology.
- 1:21We are the Priests and the Geeks.
- 1:22I'm your host, Christian Ashley.
- 1:23Today here with of course, the greatest pirate Mama Land, the fabled TJ Blackwell.
- 1:28How's it going, tj?
- 1:29Wonderful.
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:32Seems like another late nighter of work for my man here.
- 1:37Went in very early today and is only now coming back to civilization, I'm guessing.
- 1:43That's right.
- 1:44It's also my grandpa's birthday.
- 1:46Oh.
- 1:46Happy birthday to Grandpa TJ.
- 1:50Long may he reign.
- 1:51It's 84.
- 1:5384.
- 1:53Excellent.
- 1:55So today we're going to be discussing the Cross Guild Pirate Group from One Piece.
- 2:01You can definitely go to the One Piece episodes we've done before.
- 2:04Probably in the links down below.
- 2:06But tj, before we head that way, do you have any recommendations?
- 2:10Think you've been geeking out on recently?
- 2:12Uh, based on time investment?
- 2:16No.
- 2:18The things you want to kick out.
- 2:20On slay the Spire 2.
- 2:22Okay.
- 2:23It's a game a lot of my friends have been playing.
- 2:25A lot.
- 2:26I'm not a roguelike person, but it's.
- 2:28It's pretty fun.
- 2:29That's never been my thing either.
- 2:31That's all right.
- 2:31It's a good time.
- 2:34In preparation for something that won't be happening for a bit.
- 2:37The next Geeks on a Roll I'm on, which TJ will actually be on.
- 2:40So here's a little hint for you.
- 2:41Before everyone else, I been reading Craven's Last Hunt in preference for part of what might be happening along the way.
- 2:50Haven't finalized everything yet.
- 2:52It's a good book.
- 2:53Yes.
- 2:53So tj talking about Cross Guild.
- 2:56Of course we have to talk about One Piece itself.
- 2:59So they haven't listened to any other episodes we've done.
- 3:02Could you help explain to me what One Piece is to the good people?
- 3:06Yeah.
- 3:06Well, if you never heard of One Piece, wrong episode.
- 3:11But One Piece is a story about a pirate named Monkey D Luffy whose goal is to become the King of the pirates and whose core ideals we have covered in probably like 80 episodes at this point.
- 3:25Feels like it.
- 3:26It's one of the longest running manga of all time.
- 3:30The story started before I was born, not before Christian.
- 3:35Before Christian was before you were born.
- 3:38No, it came out like 96.
- 3:40I'm 90.
- 3:4096.
- 3:4197.
- 3:41Was it 96.
- 3:42Okay.
- 3:43Somewhere around there.
- 3:44Yeah.
- 3:44Because the anime came out in like 99.
- 3:46Yeah.
- 3:47Yeah.
- 3:47It got picked up quick because it's the greatest to ever do it.
- 3:52Yeah.
- 3:53A thousand some odd chapters ago.
- 3:55That's what One Piece was about.
- 3:57Yeah.
- 3:57It is a tale of pirate fantasy of going from different islands on this world that's got this large sea.
- 4:05Very rarely will there be a huge continent or anything like that.
- 4:07It's basically.
- 4:08Yeah.
- 4:08With your island of the Week.
- 4:09But there's far more to it than that.
- 4:11A nice crew of people.
- 4:12Some people who originally hate pirates.
- 4:14Some have always wanted to be them.
- 4:15Some who want have other issues.
- 4:17And yet they all find a central crew to work together and figure out the issues present in their lives.
- 4:23And that has since caused.
- 4:26Well, it's always been a part of the world that there are different factions of pirates there.
- 4:30Would you like to explain briefly, like what some of those are?
- 4:33How they came to be, why they matter to the story?
- 4:36There's so many.
- 4:37There's so many.
- 4:38Yeah.
- 4:39We're not doing every single one.
- 4:40There's so many.
- 4:41But generally there are a couple of different types of pirate factions.
- 4:45Of course you have your crews which are led by captains and you know, their crew kind of hand picked.
- 4:52Hey, they want to do pirate stuff together, garner power, that sort of thing.
- 4:57We've got like the big mom pirates, which is big moment.
- 5:01All of her kids, all of their subordinates.
- 5:04Huge, huge, massive faction that is worthless and stupid.
- 5:13There are sometimes other factions that spring up out of respect.
- 5:18Fear.
- 5:20The Straw Hat Grand Alliance.
- 5:23It was just kind of like a whole bunch of different crews being like, yeah, Luffy's awesome.
- 5:28We're part of the Straw Hat grand alliance now.
- 5:32The government will sometimes exert their power on the world to make factions of pirates like the Shichibukai or the Warlords.
- 5:40I don't know if that do that count.
- 5:42That kind of counts.
- 5:43Kind of counts.
- 5:44That kind of counts.
- 5:45It's more like a classification.
- 5:46But the Shichibukai were definitely the Warlords.
- 5:49Privateers to an extent.
- 5:52Yeah.
- 5:53But it goes all over the place.
- 5:56Factions are from crew level to like multi crew level.
- 6:00Nothing.
- 6:01Nothing too crazy.
- 6:02We're talking about one of the more recent ones in this episode.
- 6:04Which is why if you're not at least a little bit familiar with One Piece, you should probably not listen to this episode.
- 6:11Yeah, Go check out One Pace that might.
- 6:13That might help you get here eventually.
- 6:15Yeah, One Pace.
- 6:16Come back in two months or three.
- 6:19So yeah, as part of the world of One Piece, you know, pirates aren't always what you would think of as pirates.
- 6:24There are definitely those who act like the way we think pirates do, but they're multifaceted in the sense of like, our main crew are pirates, in a sense that they're adventurers.
- 6:32They're ne' er do wells, like according to the world government and its rules and like, wanting freedom for a lot of people.
- 6:39But then you'll have other pirates who are way more on the pillaging and raiding side of things, who are actually the bad guys who discriminate based on race or on location or stuff like that.
- 6:51So that brings us to our topic for today, which is discussing a specific pirate faction.
- 6:57Now that we've kind of talked broadly about what they are, we come to Cross Guild.
- 7:02Now, of course, before we actually explain what Cross Guild is, we might help to actually go into the different members of Cross Guild who have appeared all across one piece in various ways.
- 7:12So tj, first one.
- 7:14On the docket, we have good old Crocodile.
- 7:16Who is Crocodile?
- 7:17Crocodile is one of the Shichibukai, the warlords that we mentioned previously.
- 7:22But he was just a really strong pirate in the East Blue.
- 7:27Built all of his power there.
- 7:29He was actually.
- 7:31All of the members of the Cross Guild are really early characters that we got to know in like the first arc or two or three.
- 7:38Surprising when you think about it.
- 7:40Yeah, Yeah.
- 7:40I never thought about it until like just now.
- 7:42I was like, wow, literally all of these guys are from the East Blue.
- 7:46But Crocodile was like Luffy's first big roadblock.
- 7:50He was the first Logia Fruit user that we were introduced to in the series.
- 7:55He has the sand.
- 7:56Sand Fruit or whatever that is in Japanese.
- 7:59Not one that I know off the top of my head.
- 8:02Sandu.
- 8:02Sandu.
- 8:03Yeah, probably that's pretty likely, but that's more or less who he is.
- 8:09I mean, he gets ousted pretty handily not too long after we meet him, at least comparatively.
- 8:16And he's back.
- 8:18He's back.
- 8:19He was never like, completely irrelevant, and he definitely wasn't very relevant for a long time.
- 8:25He was one of the earliest.
- 8:27Not really a starter villain.
- 8:28I mean, pace of one piece kind of a starter villain, given how many chapters it took to get to him.
- 8:34It's like establishing threats.
- 8:36Like how someone like this could exist in the world and like be a threat, but also not be like a higher tier one.
- 8:42It just looks like one.
- 8:43Especially as a guy who worked in a desert country as like pretty much a physical God.
- 8:50He picked kind of the best place for him to be the most effective,.
- 8:54But it's like a smoker, worked in a cigar lounge,.
- 9:49I mean, pretty much.
- 9:51But it gets to the point of Luffy eventually takes him down after suffering crucial defeat there.
- 9:58Eventually finds his way, takes him down, but Crocodile remains.
- 10:01And he'll eventually become someone important enough to start the Cross Guild.
- 10:06But then we come to our next member out of our main trio here for this.
- 10:12Merely a duo.
- 10:13But you know what it is?
- 10:13What it is.
- 10:14Mihawk Dracule.
- 10:16Mihawk, Potential man.
- 10:18Fraud Man.
- 10:21The.
- 10:21The featless extraordinaire.
- 10:25Existing off of aura exclusively.
- 10:27Really?
- 10:27Aura alone?
- 10:29Word of mouth purely.
- 10:32I mean, it's.
- 10:33What do we even say he was?
- 10:34Also, all three of these characters were warlords and they're, you know, kind of.
- 10:39I guess we'll talk about it later.
- 10:41But yeah, that might have something to do with them.
- 10:44But Mihawk is like, widely purported to be like the greatest swordsman on the seas.
- 10:48That's pretty much who he is.
- 10:49And we've seen pretty much nothing to back that up.
- 10:52The last thing that we saw was him fighting Zorro with like a pocket knife.
- 10:59But I mean, winning handily easily.
- 11:02Didn't break a sweat.
- 11:03Swung that thing once.
- 11:05But he.
- 11:06He gave Zoro his big cool scarlet.
- 11:09But that was so long ago.
- 11:14Anyone could do that.
- 11:15Could have done that to that Zora.
- 11:16Anyone introduced in this arc could have done that to Zorro at the time.
- 11:20Yeah.
- 11:20It's so funny because like, we first see him, it's like, oh man, this is obviously one of the coolest guys ever.
- 11:26Look how easily he took down Zorro.
- 11:28And he's done things since then, but he's never like been in a legitimate fight.
- 11:34He's kind of like.
- 11:35I mean, we haven't seen Dragon really do anything either.
- 11:38You know, Luffy's dad.
- 11:39Sorry, spoilers.
- 11:39Once again, not the episode you'd be going for your first time like, but there's so much about them.
- 11:44It's like there's a mystique of like, I believe they could be one of the greatest out there.
- 11:49But I.
- 11:49I've still yet to see the actual evidence for.
- 11:52Yeah, yeah.
- 11:53The only.
- 11:54Honestly, the best evidence we get is him training Zorro.
- 11:58Yeah.
- 11:58During a time skip and we don't even see him do anything.
- 12:01Zoro just comes back stronger.
- 12:02Which.
- 12:03Which, yeah, yeah, he's probably still stronger than Zoro.
- 12:07We know he has one of the only one of the 21 supreme grade swords in the.
- 12:12In the verse.
- 12:13Or you've seen him use it twice.
- 12:15I mean, it's one of those things when you actually look behind who the members are, why they're important.
- 12:22It's also, there's a lot of like, Hope as in, like, I hope to see more in this story.
- 12:27And I think we'll definitely see it along the way.
- 12:29How that will actually happen is another thing of its own.
- 12:32But you could definitely call this like the potential guild at this point in time.
- 12:37Because we've seen some.
- 12:39Some feats and the like from.
- 12:40From.
- 12:41Well, most of them here outside of him.
- 12:43But it's also like there's still a lot more that could be given in the story which we'll see along the way and actually speculate on what could happen too.
- 12:50But of course, you know, we've gotten the two weakest members out of the way.
- 12:54We have to talk about the true mastermind.
- 12:56The one who everyone respects.
- 12:58And that of course, is Buggy the Clown.
- 13:01Who is Buggy the Clown?
- 13:04Buggy the Clown is the leader of the Cross Guild?
- 13:06Yes.
- 13:06The de facto president of the Cross Guild.
- 13:09Featless the Clown.
- 13:13He does.
- 13:14Out of the three, he has the most feats we've seen him do the most.
- 13:18Which is insane.
- 13:19We've seen his Devil Fruit in action.
- 13:21We've seen him use techniques beyond that.
- 13:23Like he's.
- 13:24He's like if.
- 13:25If we're doing like list of people who might have already awakened to their fruit.
- 13:30He's there.
- 13:31He's there.
- 13:33Bucky the Clown is just that.
- 13:35He is a clown.
- 13:36He's a captain.
- 13:37Was on Gold Rogers Crew as a kid.
- 13:43What there's.
- 13:45See the problem with all these characters is they don't have like really long histories that just aren't important.
- 13:50They're just not particularly relevant.
- 13:52But that's almost all we know about them.
- 13:54Buggy.
- 13:54The least we do know the most about Buggy.
- 13:57He was running his own.
- 13:58He had his own crew.
- 14:00They started their own company called Buggy's Delivery.
- 14:03And that's how they got tied up in this.
- 14:08Mihawk and Crocodile got together and were like, we're gonna form our guild.
- 14:12We're gonna like be a true counter to the world government.
- 14:15And Buggy.
- 14:17You owe us so much money.
- 14:19We're absorbing your company.
- 14:20And then Buggy's crewmates.
- 14:23Buggy's crew was just a little excited and started promoting Cross Guild.
- 14:27That's how Buggy ended up as the president of the Cross Guild is because his whole crew told everyone that that was the case.
- 14:33Let's wait for one second for that finish on Buggy.
- 14:35He is definitely a bigger starter villain.
- 14:37As in, like the first people you fight against.
- 14:41Then Crocodile would be.
- 14:42Crocodile is more like your more serious starter villain.
- 14:46But he has an amazing ability of Being able to detach himself and have the body parts act independently of himself and have the willpower to be able to utilize that in the fight, which at the same time as
- 14:58we have this guy who's very rubbery and that's supposed to bring some comedy into the series.
- 15:02One of the things Oda always wanted to do is no matter how serious things got, there was always going to be the guy with the rubbery powers who would do all these weird, fantastical things.
- 15:10And Buggy is an early indication of that too.
- 15:12And yeah, he's doing very serious, seriously evil things against people with protection rackets and beating up people who aren't paying and causing mischief and mayhem in the town that he's in.
- 15:24But there's something so goofy about obviously being a clown.
- 15:29Yeah.
- 15:30Like, that helps to solidify this is a legitimate threat.
- 15:33But he's also not going to be the final Big Bad.
- 15:36Yeah, yeah, he could be.
- 15:39I mean, could the ancient legends be true?
- 15:42Is Buggy D Clown actually part of the D?
- 15:45No, because that is not how the language works.
- 15:48But you know what?
- 15:49It's still be funny if it was true.
- 15:51It's a pun that only really works in English.
- 15:53Oh, it'd be funny, though.
- 15:55I wouldn't be upset.
- 15:57I would.
- 15:57Not if it happened.
- 15:58No, not at all.
- 15:59Because, like, I wouldn't even necessarily say that Buggy doesn't belong to the Will of D.
- 16:05I got.
- 16:05If you.
- 16:06If Oda was like, yeah, he's got it, I'd be like, you know, okay, sure, I believe that.
- 16:11Show me.
- 16:12So, tj, you kind of touched on it a bit, but to go in for the depth, like, Cross Guild occurs way late on in One Piece.
- 16:21We're talking over a thousand chapters essentially from the beginning.
- 16:27Like, why does Cross Guild exist?
- 16:29What's so important about it?
- 16:32Why should we care?
- 16:33Why is there an entire episode built around this if someone hasn't gotten it yet?
- 16:37The Cross Guild is.
- 16:40It's really funny, actually.
- 16:41The reason that they made the Cross Guild just feels like the same reason that they're in the manga again at this point, which is like chapter 1,050 something.
- 16:50Sure.
- 16:52It's just they were tired of not being relevant.
- 16:54They wanted to, like, be real contenders for the One Piece.
- 16:59And Oda was sitting at his desk one day and was like, I kind of miss writing about Crocodile and Mihawk.
- 17:07I'm gonna start again.
- 17:08I'm gonna do the Cross Guild.
- 17:10That's why the Cross Guild exists.
- 17:13That's the true reason.
- 17:15Now, the In Story region,.
- 17:18Basically, that Basically that Crocodile wanted to pursue the One Piece and be seen as legitimate and was aware of the fact that he really just couldn't, not on his own.
- 17:29So he conscripted Mihawk, who felt the same, and they were both kind of miffed that the World Government was like, hey, no more warlords.
- 17:36You guys are just pirates and you're kind of losers.
- 17:40So they joined together.
- 17:43They're big pools of power because they are still pirates with a great amount of influence.
- 17:47And they made the Cross Guild and then they absorbed Buggy's company and Buggy became president of the Cross Guild.
- 17:52Buggy.
- 17:53Buggy's just here accidentally, and they both hate it.
- 17:57Oh yes.
- 17:58In case you are still unfamiliar, they cannot stand Buggy the Clown.
- 18:03They want him dead, but they can't kill him.
- 18:05It's one of those things.
- 18:05A very funny serendipity, because when we're introduced originally to Crocodile, once again, he is a physical God in the realm he's in.
- 18:13But as the manga is going on, if you learn more about the world, that can be negated by the proper hockey against them, or a different Devil Fruit user who has something you can combat against him.
- 18:25So what does a man do like that?
- 18:26Well, could he level up?
- 18:28Or does he find a way to ally with people who have differing ideals?
- 18:33But at the same time, there's that one thing that brings them together, and that is of course, being the one who could obtain the One Piece, who can be the king of the pirates and establish their authority over
- 18:43the entire A world all over the seas.
- 18:46And so it brings disparate people like this together in an amusing fashion.
- 18:50But also, what makes sense to their characters.
- 18:53Like, well, outside of Mihawk, as someone, like, we know a little bit about him, but not enough to be like, okay, why?
- 18:59Why is he like, he is.
- 19:00He's definitely the most mysterious out of them.
- 19:03Like, Crocodile is more blatant.
- 19:05And of course Buggy is like, well, I can't get out of this now.
- 19:08They'll kill me if I do.
- 19:10Or.
- 19:10And my crew will know that I'm actually a fraud.
- 19:13And they've supported me this whole time, ever since we've broken out of info down.
- 19:18So he's got to be the face.
- 19:21So outside of stuff like that, like, what makes them so very different than the other pirate crews that they're also vying for the same thing that they are?
- 19:30Well, we mentioned it a little bit.
- 19:33They.
- 19:33They did have a pretty long tenure as she, you know, the privateers of the world government that let them build A lot of wealth, a lot of power.
- 19:43And combining their efforts, they're able to use that power to place bounties on Marines.
- 19:48They're like, you know what?
- 19:49We're tired of pirate bounties.
- 19:51100 million berries to whoever kills Kobe.
- 19:55I don't remember what Kobe's was.
- 19:57Surely it was higher than something like that.
- 19:58Yeah, had to be higher than him.
- 20:00100 million.
- 20:00But that's, that's like the big threat in the world.
- 20:05Government size, like, oh, these guys, like have the resources to combat us and make us more unsafe in the field.
- 20:13Like, we're gonna get hunted now.
- 20:16We gotta, we gotta solve that.
- 20:18But they also are more than just a pirate crew.
- 20:20They're a legitimate crime syndicate.
- 20:23You know, you mentioned a little bit they were doing the racketeering, protection rackets, like mod mercenary work, bodyguard stuff.
- 20:32They're really doing it all.
- 20:34They're really doing it all.
- 20:35They're just a big stinking, filthy rich organization led by Buggy the Clown.
- 20:39And that's one of the things that causes as much conflict as it does in this organization.
- 20:43Because they're not friends by any stretch of the imagination.
- 20:47What binds them together is nothing pure.
- 20:49It is this desire to be number one.
- 20:51But it's also two people who are obviously outclassing the guy everyone thinks is in charge of them, which of course is part of Otis, you know, comedic tendencies.
- 21:00But there's also something really fun there.
- 21:02And that as Buggy continues, way beyond where he ever should have been, because he's got the trust of people who shouldn't trust him.
- 21:10And yet, because of circumstance, because of things, how they've turned out, he looks like he is among the greatest.
- 21:17He looks like he should be the one who should become the next Pirate King.
- 21:20Because of all the feats that have happened around him, he's kind of almost like King to an extent, except, you know, Buggy's actually capable King from One Punch man.
- 21:31From those who don't know King is capable.
- 21:34He is, he is learning, yes.
- 21:37But all these feats are attributed to him that other people have done.
- 21:40But like, he's like, well, I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.
- 21:43I make them think I did those things.
- 21:44It's going to increase their confidence in me, which can only lead to a fall later on when the truth comes out.
- 21:49Unless the twist is they always knew and they still supported him anyways, which I think would be really funny.
- 21:55They went that way.
- 21:56So far, though, I love we're going to talk about One Punch man, now.
- 22:00Yes.
- 22:02King's reputation is so powerful that actual, like high rank monsters will run into King and be like, oh man, I gotta get out of here.
- 22:13I can hear the King Engine right now.
- 22:15It's over.
- 22:15The King Engine's so loud.
- 22:17I'm gonna die.
- 22:19So funny.
- 22:20It's so.
- 22:20King's just a guy.
- 22:22Just a regular dude.
- 22:23Yeah.
- 22:23Great writing.
- 22:24Phenomenal.
- 22:25Don't watch the anime, just read the webcomic and the manga.
- 22:28Yeah, you can watch the first season of the anime.
- 22:31After that.
- 22:32It dips seconds.
- 22:34Okay.
- 22:35Yeah, it's fine.
- 22:363.
- 22:36I don't know how they could do something.
- 22:37It's something that should have made them so much money.
- 22:39So simple could be so simple.
- 22:41That was.
- 22:43But give it to Mappa.
- 22:46They don't need to see their families that bad.
- 22:48Anyways.
- 22:50So a huge part of this, of course, is he is, as I said earlier, the face of Cross Guild, which is a lot of people don't know how to handle in story because, like, what do you mean?
- 22:59Crocodile and Mihawk are subordinate to him.
- 23:02Are those stories actually true?
- 23:04So, like, in your opinion, tj, like, in story out of story, does it ruin or enhance the credibility of Cross Guild?
- 23:11That Buggy the Clown is the face of their organization out of story.
- 23:17It makes them a joke in universe.
- 23:20The.
- 23:20The way that things have shaken out for Buggy and because of the world government being like, hey, two warlords are dead.
- 23:28The new ones are Buggy the Clown and Luffy.
- 23:32That's hilarious.
- 23:34That's so funny.
- 23:36And then Cross Guild in universe, they're like the average pirates.
- 23:41Like, I can't believe they made Buggy an emperor.
- 23:44That's so stupid.
- 23:44And then he has the Cross Guild and like, oh my God.
- 23:47Crocodile and Mihawk are both working for Buggy the Clown.
- 23:51Maybe I need to be afraid of Buggy the Clown.
- 23:53Right?
- 23:54So it's just.
- 23:54His story just keeps stacking on itself and building his reputation higher and higher and higher.
- 24:00And at this point, I think the average pirate might just think that Buggy is a.
- 24:06Y'.
- 24:06All.
- 24:06He's legit.
- 24:07Yeah.
- 24:07He's the real deal.
- 24:08We know that's not true, but they don't.
- 24:10And yeah, I agree with you.
- 24:12Like, out of universe.
- 24:12Yes.
- 24:13Obvious.
- 24:13What the joke is is that there's two very competent people who are now forced into a situation where they have to be subordinate, where they're not actually subordinate to the guy who has no business being in the top
- 24:24job.
- 24:24He's not the head honcho.
- 24:26But yeah, in universe, it's Almost like scary to the common pirate or the common marine of like, this guy.
- 24:32This guy is the face.
- 24:33He's the guy in charge.
- 24:34He got them to work together that there's no way this shouldn't work.
- 24:38So no wonder they're so panicky about it.
- 24:41Especially when we get into the next part you mentioned earlier.
- 24:43But we'll actually get a little more into what they're doing to target the world government and the Navy and everyone there.
- 24:50It's like, oh, maybe he is a legitimate threat.
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:53And even.
- 24:54Even at the time, like, this is the same thing that happened when he was a Shichibu guy.
- 24:59We were like, wow, Buggy, Warlord of the Sea.
- 25:03Really interesting.
- 25:04He must be the real deal.
- 25:06Quick question.
- 25:07It's been a while.
- 25:08His original crew from when Luffy and the gang fight them.
- 25:12Are they around right now?
- 25:14Did they make it out of Impel down, or.
- 25:16Yeah, they went.
- 25:17They came with him.
- 25:18I'm pretty sure they're like part of Buggy's delivery, maybe.
- 25:21That's what I thought, but once again, it's been so long.
- 25:25However many chapters of one piece, I don't think they died.
- 25:29Are they all still in Impel then?
- 25:31No, I'm pretty sure they came with them.
- 25:34I'm always open to correction.
- 25:35It just.
- 25:36It struck me as like, are they still around?
- 25:37Because they would know Buggy better than anyone.
- 25:39Yeah.
- 25:40If the thread were to unravel, it'd probably be because of them.
- 25:43I mean, at this point, they're profiting just as much.
- 25:47That is true.
- 25:48Like, no matter what happens to Buggy, they're in a good spot.
- 25:51If Buggy dies, their resume looks great.
- 25:55I mean, yeah, Once again, it's that perception of things without the full story, without seeing a story as we do.
- 26:00Like, to the world, this guy was some nobody who did some harm, but like, grew up in the ranks somehow.
- 26:07Now has broken out of the Unbreakable prison, along with other people who participated in this prison break, and now has become the head of this pirate organization, where once again, his subordinates, as far as they're aware of Mihawk
- 26:23and Crocodile.
- 26:24I.
- 26:25Maybe he is who he says he does.
- 26:27Maybe he is.
- 26:28It's like, it's like putting a really, like, nice Circuit City job on your resume.
- 26:34What was it?
- 26:35What was it the time man of the year from like 2006 or something like that was like, you, like, everybody.
- 26:41Yeah.
- 26:42Put that on your resume.
- 26:43It was pretty funny.
- 26:44You should do one of your CVs today.
- 26:47Yeah.
- 26:48So a huge part of what they're doing as you said earlier, Is that the way things work in the world?
- 26:53You're either your own independent pirate organization doing whatever you want, however you want it, or you are a privateer working for the world government to still do pirate things, but like, more against other pirates or people government hate
- 27:07and pay your taxes and stuff like that.
- 27:09So, like, you're a pirate, but you're not free.
- 27:12But then comes cross guild.
- 27:14And their idea is.
- 27:14Well, the whole thing is they offer bounties on pirates, even people that work with them to be like, hey, this is how great they are as a threat.
- 27:21Like, try and go after them at your own peril.
- 27:23But what if we did that back at them?
- 27:25What if we put, you know, bounties on the marines, on people in the world government, and they're like, so, like, what do you.
- 27:32What do we think of their counter proposal to do this?
- 27:35Great idea?
- 27:36And honestly, better than the bounty system because they streamlined the process.
- 27:40They were like, hey, we're not gonna name every Marine.
- 27:44If you kill a captain, that's a hundred.
- 27:46That's a hundred million.
- 27:48Yeah.
- 27:48If you kill a, like an admiral, that's a billion, you know.
- 27:53And they're like, for special pirates, like, I looked it up.
- 27:57Kobe's is 500 million.
- 27:59Okay.
- 28:00But they'll like, you know, they'll adjust it.
- 28:02You know, you can get adjusted, but they make it real, real easy.
- 28:06Vice admirals are worth the most.
- 28:09I think they go all the way down to like a hundred thousand for warrant officers.
- 28:13And below 100,000, any officer, any officer Marine, 100,000 berries.
- 28:19And then if you kill Fleet Admiral, that's 500 or 5 billion berries.
- 28:24Gosh.
- 28:25So, like, yeah, I guess if you roll up with who's the fleet admiral right now?
- 28:29Kizaru sounds right.
- 28:32I don't remember.
- 28:33We.
- 28:33Perfectly honest.
- 28:34I think it's no Akainu.
- 28:35It's kind of.
- 28:36Oh, it's kind of duh.
- 28:38Yeah.
- 28:39I don't know.
- 28:40I just.
- 28:41I kind of.
- 28:42We watched the show, we read the snack.
- 28:44I promise, I promise.
- 28:46It's been so long.
- 28:47It's been so long since we've seen him.
- 28:49Yes, but, you know, 5 billion for Akainu's head.
- 28:53Yeah.
- 28:54I'm motivated.
- 28:55I'm already.
- 28:55I was motivated before that I'd do it for free.
- 28:57But it's a good idea, and I think it's a great way to villainize yourself in the world government's eyes and also motivate people to do your job for you.
- 29:05Yeah, I'm with you 100% like, this is a brilliant strategy.
- 29:09It could easily backfire on you, but if it doesn't, it could be raking in, like, the people's goodwill, but also, like, making a name for yourself.
- 29:17Like, yeah, we weren't the ones who actually killed the guy, but we paid the guy who did.
- 29:20And if you do it well, the money's there.
- 29:23We're still doing pirate things.
- 29:24If you take them down, like, not only are you doing us a service, you're doing yourself a service.
- 29:29And so it's one of those things that kind of perpetuates over.
- 29:32Yeah, would I really want to go up against a Kainu?
- 29:34Nope.
- 29:35But it's kind of tempting now.
- 29:37Five billion berries, if I get a.
- 29:40Crew together, we search them out, try and kill him.
- 29:43I mean, it's up there now, and it's in people's minds in a way it wasn't beforehand.
- 29:48Yeah.
- 29:48Everyone was angry at the world government and the Navy and the Marines and blah, blah, blah, for all that they do and the oppression and the way that the laws aren't handled as well as they should.
- 29:56But now you've given incentive to want them gone.
- 30:00And I'd say it's a master stroke.
- 30:02Yeah.
- 30:02And it's.
- 30:03Honestly, it's a lot worse for the guys who are, like, you know, just petty officers, warrant officers, guys that are worth, like, 100,000 berries all of a sudden that really aren't doing anything but their jobs.
- 30:13They're just, like, experienced, normal people like Kobe Garp, Sengoku, Akainu, Kizaru.
- 30:20They can handle themselves.
- 30:21Yeah.
- 30:22Like, they.
- 30:22They deserve to have a big bounty.
- 30:24You're going to have to work to get it.
- 30:26Like, you're very few exceptions.
- 30:28You're not getting that.
- 30:29Yeah, but the rank is doable.
- 30:32Yeah.
- 30:33Not for anyone who cares to work for the Cross Guild.
- 30:37This is.
- 30:37It instills fear in the lower ranks of the.
- 30:41The Navy and the like, because it could be me next.
- 30:43And there are people like, yeah, the world government itself is corrupt, but there are people who are actually doing their jobs and looking after people inside of the Navy proper, like, are doing this not because they want to
- 30:54control people, but to look after people.
- 30:56So these people are in the crosshairs now.
- 30:59And all they were doing was, like you said, their jobs.
- 31:02It's rough.
- 31:02It's got to be rough.
- 31:04But it also.
- 31:04What it's doing is it's, like, ramping up the polarization.
- 31:09It's like Oda watched, like, American politics for a little while and then came up with the Cross guilds.
- 31:15How do I get the One Piece world this divided?
- 31:18Sorry, Polarization was last year.
- 31:19Teacher.
- 31:20This is the faces behind us.
- 31:23The faces behind that was last year is behind me.
- 31:25There you go.
- 31:26It's relevant.
- 31:28You're right.
- 31:28It does create heavily polarized heavy polarization.
- 31:31Sorry, I can't speak today.
- 31:33Any idea of making them all the enemy?
- 31:35All I have to do is say, well, if I pay you for it.
- 31:37Well, my morals go out the window if I'm a pirate here.
- 31:42Hundred thousand.
- 31:42A hundred thousand?
- 31:43Yeah.
- 31:43And you don't have to be a pirate to collect that bounty.
- 31:46Also true.
- 31:47Just saying.
- 31:48The common man could do it.
- 31:49The warrant officer.
- 31:50That's just a trained dude.
- 31:52You and like 15 year buddies with a stick.
- 31:55Maybe.
- 31:55There's mountain bandits in one piece.
- 31:57Yeah, like 1100 chapters ago.
- 32:01But they were there.
- 32:02They could do it.
- 32:03They've been established.
- 32:04They're part of the world.
- 32:06Classic characters.
- 32:08Vintage characters.
- 32:0990S.
- 32:1090S are vintage now.
- 32:12Yeah.
- 32:13Yeah they are.
- 32:14I was born in the 90s.
- 32:15The tail end.
- 32:16But you were there.
- 32:17I was there.
- 32:18All right.
- 33:47So one of the last things we're going to talk about here is of course this is setting up obviously for friction along the way to happen with them and our main crew in some way shape form.
- 33:56These are former villains and former mentors of past characters.
- 34:00They're not going to go down without a fight.
- 34:02Like, how do we.
- 34:04What are we.
- 34:04How are we expecting them to interact with the Straw Hats later on?
- 34:07I don't know.
- 34:08I don't know.
- 34:09Like, I feel like it'll be soon, but I don't know.
- 34:12Other than Zoro and Mihawk fighting, we'll have that as like a benchmark for Zoro's growth.
- 34:19I assume that will happen.
- 34:20I cannot imagine Crocodile doing anything to Luffy.
- 34:24Not right now.
- 34:25He'd have to level up extensively.
- 34:27But the fact that I can't imagine it for Mihawk means that Oda's doing something right?
- 34:31Yeah.
- 34:32Because in my head I'm like, man, Mihawk might still be stronger than Zora.
- 34:36That would be the big thing though for him is like the whole thing with him.
- 34:40Losing that fight is one of the things.
- 34:42Well, I'm never gonna let it happen to me again.
- 34:44I'm never gonna have my back cucked like that.
- 34:46Like, if it happens again, what does that do do to Zorro?
- 34:50He might fall down some stairs.
- 34:53Which is the only way to kill the character in one piece outside of donate them.
- 34:57So who knows?
- 35:00I don't know what bug is going to do run, Hide, Scream, cry.
- 35:02Get the credit for winning.
- 35:04That'll probably happen.
- 35:05Realistically.
- 35:07Yeah.
- 35:07Now that I really think about it.
- 35:09I have no idea how we're going to get out of the situation the Straw Hats are in right now.
- 35:13Brightness every second.
- 35:15Maybe it's just going to time out.
- 35:18I don't know.
- 35:19Maybe he's only project himself so far.
- 35:21It's spoilers for the current manga, by the way.
- 35:24Yeah.
- 35:24Sorry guys.
- 35:25Seriously shouldn't be listening to this.
- 35:29I don't know.
- 35:30They're kind of just screwed.
- 35:32Unless Imu's manifestation time runs out.
- 35:35That has to be what's gonna happen.
- 35:38I can't picture it going well for the Cross Guild in any way.
- 35:43Unless Mihawk really is that guy.
- 35:45Because I know Crocodile can't do it.
- 35:47Because Rav Lucci, you know, he tried again very recently and just got obliterated.
- 35:53Body wholeheartedly bodied, really hard.
- 35:57And he awakened his fruit.
- 35:59That also true.
- 36:01We have not seen proof that Crocodile has done that.
- 36:04Yeah.
- 36:05If they're able to him and Buggy in some way shape or form, maybe it make him for a threat for a little bit longer.
- 36:10But yeah, it's got to be Mihawk right now.
- 36:12Is the one who can actually do something.
- 36:14Because if after all this time it jobs say, oh, okay.
- 36:19That would be really funny though.
- 36:20That would be so funny.
- 36:21Oh, it'd be so funny.
- 36:23But Mihawk is the one who like still has that air of mystery about him.
- 36:27And he still has like his swords.
- 36:29Not number one, is it?
- 36:31It's like number three or four from like the greatest.
- 36:35But say yes for right now he has it.
- 36:38That's on paper.
- 36:39That's one of the strongest guys on the planet.
- 36:41Yeah.
- 36:41As far as most people know.
- 36:43And to be fair to Crocodile.
- 36:44Go ahead.
- 36:45Crocodile is not like a slouch.
- 36:46Crocodile is still probably like top 60 strongest people on this planet.
- 36:51Problem is, he is trying to be heavily involved with the other 59 people.
- 36:56He stayed in his lane to be fine.
- 36:58Yeah.
- 36:58Which is what he was doing when we met him.
- 37:01Yes.
- 37:01He was like, man, I'm not going to the Grand Line.
- 37:04I don't belong over there.
- 37:05I can take Alabaster.
- 37:07And that's as far as I'm going to.
- 37:09Yeah.
- 37:09And he couldn't even do that because here comes Luffy.
- 37:12Speaking of, do you think that there's an inevitable clash, a final clash between him and Buggy as the leaders of their respective pirate guilds?
- 37:21I feel like Buggy will probably get the one piece.
- 37:24Okay.
- 37:25That's what's gonna happen.
- 37:26Be the true Pirate King after all this time, as Oda intended from the very beginning.
- 37:31And once Buggy becomes the Pirate King, Luffy will finally know what true freedom feels like when he no longer has that expectation of performance for himself.
- 37:42Okay, we'll keep that in mind.
- 37:44Yeah.
- 37:44Yeah, that's it.
- 37:45One Piece is having like the big existential like bad ending.
- 37:50We're going like eternal sunshine ending for.
- 37:52One Piece with that in mind.
- 37:55Do you have anything else you want to say about Cross Guild before we wrap up today?
- 37:58Great.
- 37:58Super funny concept.
- 38:00Oda did it again.
- 38:01Well done, Oda Sensei.
- 38:03Hi guys.
- 38:03We will also be having a bonus question today that of course we'll be asking ourselves a question.
- 38:08Who would we add as another member of the Guild if given the chance?
- 38:13So that interests you?
- 38:14You can always find our bonus questions and bonus material on that fourth wall.
- 38:20Throw a little money our way if that's something that interests you.
- 38:22If not, don't worry about it.
- 38:23You can just listen to regular episodes.
- 38:26So, tj, do we have you have a recommendation for the audience to check out today?
- 38:31Nope.
- 38:32I'm lying.
- 38:32None.
- 38:33I don't.
- 38:34I don't get much time to do many things anymore, but I still have to drive to and from work.
- 38:40So I listened to Best Buds by Mom Jeans.
- 38:46The album just.
- 38:48Man, one of the.
- 38:48One of the best albums ever made.
- 38:50I really believe that.
- 38:51Definitely in the genre for sure.
- 38:53In the genre.
- 38:54If you want to argue with me about the genre itself, that's fine.
- 38:58I'm amenable to that.
- 38:59Dude, it's definitely not for everyone.
- 39:01Midwest Emo, it takes a certain kind.
- 39:04But man, what a phenomenal project.
- 39:07Check it out.
- 39:08If you've never listened to Midwest Emo, not many better places to start than Best Buds by Mom Jeans.
- 39:15Yeah, I don't think you guys understand how much work this man does that is forced upon him day by day.
- 39:22So to actually have time to enjoy something at all or to even record it all is a heavy feat.
- 39:28So claps for tj.
- 39:29He deserves it.
- 39:31Thank you.
- 39:31Please don't.
- 39:33My recommendation.
- 39:35Going another way.
- 39:37I rewatched the original the Disney movie A Little Mermaid and I really enjoyed it.
- 39:42Once again, it is.
- 39:43She's one of my favorite Disney princess I despise because I also saw the live action Little Mermaid not too long after that and it is an absolute travesty.
- 39:55Not as bad as the Snow White one was, but still bad and soulless for a different reason.
- 40:00So that's my anti recommendation in the midst of my recommendation.
- 40:03All right, all right.
- 40:05So thank you guys for all you do.
