- 0:09Speaker 1: What's going on? Everyone?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome into another episode of the check O'DII Andrew de Checko,
- 0:14Speaker 2: Eagles beat reporter for insidethebirds dot Com. Today's podcast will
- 0:18Speaker 2: be what I believe to be the eagles best offseason editions.
- 0:22Speaker 2: But first, some housekeeping items. I get asked this seemingly
- 0:27Speaker 2: every offseason, and I do appreciate it, but I'm always
- 0:31Speaker 2: asked about dark horses. To keep an eye on in
- 0:34Speaker 2: OTA's mandatory mini camp and training camp. I outline three players,
- 0:39Speaker 2: two on defense, one on offense that I talked about
- 0:43Speaker 2: on this podcast. I wrote about it on Inside the
- 0:45Speaker 2: Birds dot com, So please go and check out those
- 0:48Speaker 2: stories on Inside the Birds dot com. You can grab
- 0:51Speaker 2: that podcast in the archives, and if you haven't already,
- 0:55Speaker 2: be sure to check out the podcast that I did
- 0:57Speaker 2: where I interviewed Javon Gopi who not only who are
- 1:01Speaker 2: Bernard which was the central focus of the podcast. Joshua Wayrou,
- 1:05Speaker 2: who the Eagles signed as an undrafted free agent, another
- 1:08Speaker 2: ipp player from Kenya, offered some really interesting insight there.
- 1:13Speaker 2: But he also trains Jonathan Grenard and he had some
- 1:17Speaker 2: really intriguing things to say about Jonathan Garnard that should
- 1:22Speaker 2: excite you if you're an Eagles fan listening, which I
- 1:24Speaker 2: presume you are. But let's get to the offseason editions
- 1:30Speaker 2: that I think were the Eagles best, and we're gonna
- 1:33Speaker 2: start with the aforementioned Jonathan Gernard. Now, the Eagles had
- 1:38Speaker 2: a really, really strong Day two because not only did
- 1:40Speaker 2: they select tight end Eli Stours out of Vanderbilt with
- 1:43Speaker 2: pick number fifty four, but shortly thereafter they execute a
- 1:48Speaker 2: trade with the Minnesota Vikings to get Jonathan Garnard. They
- 1:50Speaker 2: add the seventh round pick, which was made in mind
- 1:54Speaker 2: to draft U R. Bernard to accumulate an extra pick
- 1:58Speaker 2: to have that flexibility. But John Jan think Gernard I
- 2:01Speaker 2: believe is one of the more underrated pass rushers in
- 2:03Speaker 2: the NFL. He has been for a number of years.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Thirty eight career sacks, seventy seven games gives you a
- 2:09Speaker 2: different type of skill set relative to jaywhen Phillips, who
- 2:13Speaker 2: he's replacing, and he gives Eagles the top of the
- 2:15Speaker 2: rotation pass rusher. Now, one of the biggest needs this
- 2:18Speaker 2: offseason going into it, at least in my estimation, was
- 2:22Speaker 2: pass rusher because you have Jay look Hunt, you have
- 2:25Speaker 2: Nolan Smith and both players on their own are solid
- 2:30Speaker 2: pass rushers that are sort of arrow up guys, but
- 2:34Speaker 2: I don't necessarily view either player as a front line,
- 2:37Speaker 2: top of the rotation pass rusher. But they go ahead
- 2:40Speaker 2: and they get one in Jonathan Gernard, And what I
- 2:44Speaker 2: like about him is that, yes, he's turning twenty nine
- 2:46Speaker 2: years old in May, but he has a lot of
- 2:49Speaker 2: football left, a lot of quality football left. And if
- 2:52Speaker 2: you go back and listen to what Yvon Gopi had
- 2:54Speaker 2: to say about Jonathan Gernard, that should have you really
- 2:57Speaker 2: really intrigued with what he's going to provide in Philadelphia. Now,
- 3:03Speaker 2: I think in Vic Fango's system, it's a good fit
- 3:05Speaker 2: because not only.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Do you need if you're the Eagles, to.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Address the edge rusher position, but you also have to
- 3:12Speaker 2: identify a player who's going to be a good fit.
- 3:14Speaker 2: And I think with Johnathan Gernard body type, short area quickness,
- 3:18Speaker 2: movement ability, he can drop in the coverage if you
- 3:20Speaker 2: need him to. But he's going to take a lot
- 3:23Speaker 2: of attention away from jay loox Hunt and Nolan Smith
- 3:25Speaker 2: and allowed them to do what they did best when
- 3:28Speaker 2: they acquired Jalen Phillips, and that is to go ahead
- 3:32Speaker 2: and get after the quarterback without that extra attention. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: so I look at what Johnathan Grenard can provide, and
- 3:39Speaker 2: he is coming off a season in which he had
- 3:41Speaker 2: the left shoulder injury limited him to twelve games, had
- 3:44Speaker 2: three sacks. But if you look beyond those numbers, he
- 3:47Speaker 2: was still impactful for the Vikings. But a couple of
- 3:50Speaker 2: years ago he combined for if you're looking at the
- 3:53Speaker 2: twenty twenty three and twenty twenty four seasons, he had
- 3:55Speaker 2: twenty four and a half sacks, which.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Was a bulk of his career production.
- 4:00Speaker 2: But in Philadelphia, I think you're gonna find that Vic
- 4:03Speaker 2: Vangio will will scheme around the strengths of his players,
- 4:07Speaker 2: which he has done over his time in Philadelphia, and
- 4:11Speaker 2: they needed a top of.
- 4:13Speaker 1: The rotation pass rusher. I can't emphasize that enough.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Grenard gives them that, and then it allows every other
- 4:18Speaker 2: player in the rotation to slot in in which they're
- 4:22Speaker 2: more ideally suited. So I've talked a lot about Grenard.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It's a trade and a move that really is sort
- 4:28Speaker 2: of under the radar a little bit because it happened
- 4:30Speaker 2: on draft weekend. But if you zoom out a little bit,
- 4:33Speaker 2: and you look at the production that he's had throughout
- 4:35Speaker 2: his career, you don't have to squint to see the
- 4:38Speaker 2: impact or envision that in Philadelphia. So I think that
- 4:42Speaker 2: that is, without question the Eagles best. Now there's another
- 4:47Speaker 2: one that I really liked and I still do like,
- 4:50Speaker 2: and that is the Reek Woan.
- 4:52Speaker 1: Edition, because he's sort of a.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Mystery in the sense that he had his best year
- 4:57Speaker 2: as a rookie and then he was inc instant during
- 5:00Speaker 2: his time with the Seahawks, split some time there with
- 5:03Speaker 2: Josh Joe, former Eagles corner, and so it's fair to
- 5:07Speaker 2: wonder what version of Rik Wohan are the Eagles getting. Well,
- 5:11Speaker 2: they're getting a twenty seven year old corner who is
- 5:14Speaker 2: six foot four, two hundred plus pounds, moves really well,
- 5:18Speaker 2: blistering speed, all the athleticism that you could possibly want.
- 5:22Speaker 2: And he has a lot to gain personally signing a
- 5:26Speaker 2: one year deal in Philadelphia because when he goes back
- 5:29Speaker 2: to the table next offseason, whether he puts together a
- 5:34Speaker 2: tremendous season in Philadelphia or whatever the case may be,
- 5:38Speaker 2: he stands to benefit financially if he is able to
- 5:42Speaker 2: have a good season. So availability's going to be key
- 5:44Speaker 2: but also consistency. He's going to see a lot of
- 5:47Speaker 2: passes thrown his way, but I think you like the
- 5:49Speaker 2: length that he provides. It's really unique for a corner.
- 5:52Speaker 2: I can't remember seeing a corner with those type of dimensions.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And playing opposite Quinna Mitchell and Cooper Degen, I think
- 5:59Speaker 2: is going to be to fit him tremendously and tapping
- 6:03Speaker 2: into the player that he was in his first season
- 6:06Speaker 2: in Seattle. He knows that he needs to rein it
- 6:09Speaker 2: in when it comes to demonstrating emotion and just have
- 6:13Speaker 2: being a more aware and heads the type of player.
- 6:17Speaker 2: So I don't have those concerns with them, but it's
- 6:19Speaker 2: just about being consistent and what we've learned from Vic Vangil.
- 6:24Speaker 2: If you are a player that is spotty when it
- 6:29Speaker 2: comes to, you know, game by game consistency, you're not
- 6:34Speaker 2: necessarily gonna jie with him, and if he can't trust
- 6:36Speaker 2: you to put you on the field, it can lead
- 6:38Speaker 2: to a turbulent tenure in Philadelphia. We're way too early
- 6:42Speaker 2: for that, but it is important to highlight that that
- 6:45Speaker 2: is the player largely that Riek Wollen has been during
- 6:48Speaker 2: his time with Seattle. But you're bringing him into Philadelphia,
- 6:50Speaker 2: where there's a much more sound structure I would imagine
- 6:53Speaker 2: from a defensive back coach perspective with Joe Casper and
- 6:59Speaker 2: you have Mike Pello Green know, so there's some new
- 7:01Speaker 2: voices some younger coaches that I think from a relatability
- 7:05Speaker 2: standpoint are really going to get their point across and
- 7:10Speaker 2: be able to relate to those players. And I'm really
- 7:15Speaker 2: curious to see where Rik Wollen sets in. But it's
- 7:18Speaker 2: so important because the Eagles battled last season with inefficient
- 7:23Speaker 2: play opposite Quinya Mitchell and Cooper dejen Whether that was
- 7:26Speaker 2: a Dori Jackson who I thought was fine once he
- 7:29Speaker 2: settled in, but Kieley Ringo clearly wasn't the answer there
- 7:32Speaker 2: at corner. The Eagles tried him there and they've given
- 7:35Speaker 2: him opportunities over the past few years, and he hasn't
- 7:39Speaker 2: exactly taken the baton and run with it. So I
- 7:41Speaker 2: think you have an idea of who kiey Ringo is.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But that's why it's so important to bring someone in
- 7:47Speaker 2: with this kind of profile in Rike Wohen and just
- 7:49Speaker 2: trust that the player is going to be motivated, and
- 7:53Speaker 2: trust that the developmental aspect of the Eagles and their
- 7:55Speaker 2: coaching staff is going to get the most out of them.
- 7:58Speaker 2: So I really like that addition because you're not exactly
- 8:01Speaker 2: bringing him in to an organization that doesn't have that
- 8:06Speaker 2: track record that just sort of collects free agents with
- 8:09Speaker 2: the big names and you never really hear from them
- 8:12Speaker 2: or they kind of fall on their face. They're bringing
- 8:14Speaker 2: him into a lot of stability here in Philadelphia. The
- 8:17Speaker 2: next player I want to talk about is one that
- 8:19Speaker 2: I think is going to prove to be the eagles
- 8:21Speaker 2: most underrated free agent addition, and that is cornerback Jonathan Jones.
- 8:26Speaker 2: He's entering his eleventh season thirty two years old, so
- 8:30Speaker 2: he's not someone that I view as a long term
- 8:32Speaker 2: answer here. But he's played in one hundred and forty
- 8:35Speaker 2: four games, started seventy eight, most of them with the
- 8:38Speaker 2: New England Patriots, was with the Washington Commanders last season,
- 8:41Speaker 2: played in twelve games. But I think what's most appealing
- 8:43Speaker 2: about the Jonathan Jones edition is that he gives you
- 8:47Speaker 2: an option off the bench that you feel comfortable with,
- 8:50Speaker 2: because if you take him out of the equation, then
- 8:52Speaker 2: you're relying on the Keeley Ringos, Jacoryan Bennett's and Mac
- 8:56Speaker 2: McWilliams of the world to if anything happen weapons to
- 9:00Speaker 2: the top three corners, they need to step Any of
- 9:03Speaker 2: those guys would have to step in, and we've seen
- 9:05Speaker 2: enough to cause some hesitation, apprehension, and reservations as to
- 9:10Speaker 2: how they are going to fill in. But with Jonathan Jones,
- 9:14Speaker 2: it's almost like Isaiah Rodgers, where you have someone who
- 9:17Speaker 2: can play either cornerback spot. And I think to take
- 9:21Speaker 2: this a step further, with Jonathan Jones, he can play nickel,
- 9:24Speaker 2: he can play safety if you need him to.
- 9:26Speaker 1: So he gives you versatility.
- 9:28Speaker 2: And proven experience at multiple positions. So if he does
- 9:33Speaker 2: need to step in for a game or two or three,
- 9:35Speaker 2: you feel a lot more comfortable where you would be
- 9:37Speaker 2: with him than maybe a Kilei Ringo or Jacoryan Bennett.
- 9:41Speaker 2: And I can't say enough about the experience that he's
- 9:44Speaker 2: coming in with. He's played in many big games in
- 9:47Speaker 2: his career, and I think in Philadelphia will prove to
- 9:51Speaker 2: be a really good fit and give that veteran presence
- 9:53Speaker 2: in the room because it's a really young room. Aside
- 9:56Speaker 2: from someone like Adriek Woman who is twenty seven years old.
- 10:01Speaker 1: He's been in the NFL.
- 10:02Speaker 2: But he gives you that that stabilizing presence that's seen
- 10:05Speaker 2: a lot, and I think that, you know, while the
- 10:08Speaker 2: other players can learn from him, he can learn from
- 10:10Speaker 2: them as well.
- 10:11Speaker 1: It should help that he that he's played in different schemes.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So I don't know this is going to be so
- 10:18Speaker 2: much of an acclamation process for him, but for me,
- 10:21Speaker 2: I look at it, and he gives you a he's
- 10:24Speaker 2: a proven entity. And without that, because the cornerback depth
- 10:29Speaker 2: isn't exactly as strong as you might expect, you can't
- 10:32Speaker 2: you can't sign all pros everywhere, and you can't have
- 10:35Speaker 2: that kind of depth across the board. But you could
- 10:38Speaker 2: do a far a lot worse. You can do a
- 10:40Speaker 2: whole lot worse than a Jonathan Jones. So I think
- 10:42Speaker 2: if you really look at their offseason additions and you
- 10:45Speaker 2: try to see how these pieces fit into the overall equation,
- 10:48Speaker 2: it's not hard to see the value there in a
- 10:51Speaker 2: Jonathan Jones. And then as far as retentions go, I
- 10:55Speaker 2: think the Eagles' best retention you could say Dallas Goddard,
- 10:59Speaker 2: and you could certainly say Braden Man as well. I'm
- 11:01Speaker 2: not gonna argue with you, but I think it's Fred
- 11:03Speaker 2: Johnson because he comes back again for a one year deal.
- 11:08Speaker 2: But you saw how important of a piece that he
- 11:14Speaker 2: was to the roster when he had to step in
- 11:16Speaker 2: and start nine games in the absence of Lane Johnson.
- 11:19Speaker 2: Without Fred Johnson, you would be relying on Markel Bell,
- 11:24Speaker 2: a rookie third round pick who's gonna take a little
- 11:27Speaker 2: bit of time at least in my view, to acclimate.
- 11:30Speaker 1: To the NFL.
- 11:31Speaker 2: He needs to develop his play strength, he needs to
- 11:33Speaker 2: master the technique, and that falls on Markel and offensive
- 11:36Speaker 2: line coach Chris Cooper. But I still think he's a
- 11:39Speaker 2: year away. You have two holdovers, and Miles Hinton and
- 11:43Speaker 2: Cameron Williams, but I'm not sure that you would feel
- 11:46Speaker 2: overly comfortable plugging either one of those guys in the
- 11:49Speaker 2: lineup if injuries arise to either Jordan Malatta or Lane Johnson.
- 11:55Speaker 2: But what Fred Johnson gives you is a player who
- 11:57Speaker 2: started over twenty games in this league. I'm sure free
- 12:00Speaker 2: agency didn't pan out the way that he envisioned. He
- 12:03Speaker 2: sought out a starting role, just like he did last offseason.
- 12:06Speaker 2: There weren't any suitors, seemingly because he was on the
- 12:09Speaker 2: market for a while and instead he returns to Philadelphia,
- 12:13Speaker 2: a place where he's seen the most success in his career.
- 12:15Speaker 1: He gives the Eagles a dependable swing tackle on game day.
- 12:20Speaker 1: You know how he will fare if he needs to
- 12:23Speaker 1: start some games.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Obviously that won't be ideal, But it's not exactly like
- 12:26Speaker 2: you're plugging in someone with no experience, where you have
- 12:30Speaker 2: no idea if the offense will even be able to
- 12:32Speaker 2: operate with a young player like that, as they're sort
- 12:35Speaker 2: of learning on the job.
- 12:37Speaker 3: All right, everybody, just a quick break to remind you
- 12:39Speaker 3: if you haven't noticed sun's coming out, it's getting warmer,
- 12:44Speaker 3: especially where we are in the Northeast. That reminds you
- 12:47Speaker 3: that summer's right around the corner. And with late spring
- 12:50Speaker 3: and summer come a ton of activities. I know, for me,
- 12:53Speaker 3: and I'm sure just like everybody else. You know, my
- 12:55Speaker 3: kids play softball and at tournaments every weekend, and then
- 12:59Speaker 3: there's gonna be barbecues. And I actually turn fifty the
- 13:03Speaker 3: big five OZ this year, along with many of my friends,
- 13:05Speaker 3: so I know there's going to be a lot of
- 13:06Speaker 3: fiftieth birthday parties. And look, I know that at these parties,
- 13:11Speaker 3: I'm going to have a few drinks, I'm going to
- 13:13Speaker 3: want to have fun with my friends, and now that
- 13:15Speaker 3: I'm fifty, we're going to be fifty. I know that
- 13:19Speaker 3: I just don't feel as great the next day, even
- 13:22Speaker 3: if I just have a few drinks the night before.
- 13:25Speaker 3: So I tried this new product called Cheers Restore. Okay,
- 13:30Speaker 3: it restores how you feel the next morning. You take
- 13:35Speaker 3: it after your last drink before bed. It works while
- 13:39Speaker 3: you sleep, and their claim to fame is that you
- 13:41Speaker 3: feel fifty percent better the next morning or your money back.
- 13:46Speaker 3: So basically, if you have seven or eight beers throughout
- 13:50Speaker 3: a barbecue, then the next day you may feel like
- 13:54Speaker 3: you only had three or four. So basically, Cheers Restore
- 13:57Speaker 3: helps you metabolize alcohol more efficiently and it supports overall
- 14:01Speaker 3: liver health. Most people think that when you drink, you
- 14:05Speaker 3: get dehydrated and that's why you don't feel great the
- 14:08Speaker 3: next day. The real issue is actually what happens in
- 14:11Speaker 3: your brain and liver while you're sleeping. So when the
- 14:14Speaker 3: alcohol leaves your system, your brain goes into this rebound
- 14:17Speaker 3: mode and that's what makes you feel bad. The DHM
- 14:20Speaker 3: and Cheers works while you sleep to smooth out that
- 14:23Speaker 3: rebound and at the same time the alcohol converts into
- 14:26Speaker 3: a toxic byproduct that your liver has to clear out
- 14:29Speaker 3: the CEIs steine and Cheers helps speed that up. It's
- 14:32Speaker 3: backed by doctors, PhDs and over one thousand verified clinicians.
- 14:37Speaker 3: They've sold over fifty million doses, and Cheers is also
- 14:40Speaker 3: available in thirty thousand retail locations that includes Target, CVS
- 14:45Speaker 3: and Walgreens. So take Cheers, restore after your last drink
- 14:48Speaker 3: or before going to bed, and wake up feeling at
- 14:50Speaker 3: least fifty percent better, or your money back. For a

- 16:06Speaker 3: pros can then Apothecary top quality cannabis, great prices, and
- 16:11Speaker 3: an experience made for Philly fans twenty one and up.
- 16:15Speaker 2: But Fred Johnson, especially relative to what the Eagles are
- 16:18Speaker 2: paying him, another savvy move, and you have to give
- 16:21Speaker 2: credit to Fred Johnson.
- 16:23Speaker 1: For all things being equal.
- 16:25Speaker 2: You don't necessarily go to another team that you're not
- 16:28Speaker 2: familiar with and just sort of banking on the fact
- 16:31Speaker 2: that maybe they'll see enough in you to give you
- 16:33Speaker 2: a starting spot. You go back to Philadelphia where you
- 16:36Speaker 2: have had that success. You are familiar with the culture
- 16:39Speaker 2: in the locker room, and you've done a lot of winning,
- 16:42Speaker 2: and from the Eagles standpoint, you have a veteran tackle
- 16:45Speaker 2: who I view among the best backup tackles in football.
- 16:49Speaker 2: I think that there's probably a couple teams that he
- 16:51Speaker 2: could start for and they're able to find a way
- 16:54Speaker 2: to keep him in the building for at least another season.
- 16:57Speaker 2: So that's kind of where my mind is. They've done
- 16:59Speaker 2: some other thing that I really like this offseason. I'm
- 17:01Speaker 2: excluding the draft picks. I'm solely talking about their offseason
- 17:05Speaker 2: additions in free agency, and because of that, those are
- 17:10Speaker 2: the ones that I sort of was poeing from, and
- 17:13Speaker 2: I believe that those are the ones that really jump
- 17:15Speaker 2: out to me because you can see the vision, you
- 17:17Speaker 2: can see how they'll fit, and on the surface, I
- 17:20Speaker 2: think that all of those moves were very sound, especially
- 17:24Speaker 2: the Jonathan Gernard one, because you will soon see why
- 17:28Speaker 2: you hear so many out there, including myself, that are
- 17:31Speaker 2: bullish on Grenard. I think he's a better pass rusher
- 17:34Speaker 2: than Jalen Phillips. Does he leave a little bit more
- 17:40Speaker 2: to be desired when it comes to run defense, Yes,
- 17:42Speaker 2: because Jalen Phillips is a bigger player, he was longer,
- 17:46Speaker 2: and he gives you a little bit more in that capacity,
- 17:48Speaker 2: but purely looking at it through the lens of pass
- 17:51Speaker 2: rush prowess.
- 17:52Speaker 1: Jonathan Gernard offers that in spades.
- 17:55Speaker 2: So with that, that is my episode here for to
- 17:57Speaker 2: check O Daily.
