- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to the overland Journal podcast. I am
- 0:04Speaker 1: your host, Scott Brady and I'm joined today by my
- 0:06Speaker 1: co host Matt Scott. Now, this is going to be
- 0:10Speaker 1: a really fun conversation today because we talk about the
- 0:14Speaker 1: overlanding game changers. So these are going to be the items,
- 0:18Speaker 1: the services, the developments within overlanding that have really changed
- 0:24Speaker 1: our process of travel, and that includes everything from e
- 0:28Speaker 1: visas to the garment in reach. But we'd also love
- 0:32Speaker 1: to hear what your game changers have been and you
- 0:35Speaker 1: can reach me at Scott dot a dot Brady on
- 0:38Speaker 1: Instagram with your feedback or what your list might be.
- 0:41Speaker 1: So for right now, enjoy my conversation with Matt Scott
- 0:46Speaker 1: on the overlanding game changers. Matt, we are finally back
- 0:51Speaker 1: together at the podcast table. You're back from reunited.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So good, that's right, Yeah, were doing back in Prescott. Yeah,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and we're talking about the top ten overlanding game changers.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Yeah, which I think was a great topic you came
- 1:07Speaker 1: up with. I'm like, that is a fun one because
- 1:10Speaker 1: there has been so much development because of a lot
- 1:14Speaker 1: of reasons, because of technology, but also because the booming
- 1:17Speaker 1: popularity of overlanding there's more business case for people to
- 1:20Speaker 1: come up with new ideas. Yeah, you come up with
- 1:23Speaker 1: cool ideas.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It's interesting. You know, you've been you've been around it
- 1:25Speaker 2: longer than I have, but we've both been around for
- 1:27Speaker 2: a bit, and even in like maybe the fifteen years
- 1:30Speaker 2: I've been around, it's like, you know, just seeing the
- 1:35Speaker 2: you know, the progression is really really cool.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, you and I've seen the same thing. Because even
- 1:41Speaker 1: I mean you started working with us when it was
- 1:45Speaker 1: in its infancy, so where there just wasn't much out there,
- 1:49Speaker 1: and so the few years that I started before that
- 1:52Speaker 1: not anything. Really.
- 1:53Speaker 2: If you saw a snorkel on a car like you
- 1:57Speaker 2: would like arrive at a mutual gas, I'm best friends
- 2:01Speaker 2: with that.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It was the overland wave was a circle for many,
- 2:04Speaker 1: many years. And now you can't go buy a Subaru
- 2:07Speaker 1: without seeing a roof tent on it. So a lot
- 2:09Speaker 1: has a lot has changed, but there's also been some
- 2:12Speaker 1: really significant game changers that I think have made overlanding
- 2:17Speaker 1: and travel easier, more enjoyable. All of that. So yeah,
- 2:22Speaker 1: but before we get started, though, what's new with you?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Like anything exciting?
- 2:27Speaker 2: I think there's always exciting stuff going on.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I mean Dak as well. So your puppy's good.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Laura is awesome kind of kind of
- 2:35Speaker 2: focusing on this racing thing, yeah, which I find very
- 2:39Speaker 2: Uh Yeah, it's good. You know, it's nice to be
- 2:44Speaker 2: competitive in something and challenge yourself a little bit. You know.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It's still it's not it's not really related to overlanding,
- 2:52Speaker 2: but it's you know, still that pursuit of kind of
- 2:55Speaker 2: driving skill, which is really fun.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And I think it's really positive for you. I see,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you know that it helps you really kind of focus
- 3:05Speaker 1: on the on something that is totally unrelated to your business. Yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 1: it forces you to stay fit, go to the gym,
- 3:13Speaker 1: you know, it gives you, it gives you that really
- 3:15Speaker 1: positive outlet. I think it's good to have hobbies like that. Yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: and probably like how the sailing is for me, where
- 3:21Speaker 1: it's like it's that one thing that has nothing to
- 3:24Speaker 1: do with my business that I totally enjoy. So yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and it's just a fraction of the speed, Like sailing
- 3:31Speaker 1: is definitely like on this much slower because I'm dealing
- 3:35Speaker 1: with the theoretical whole speed of all the twenty six
- 3:38Speaker 1: foot boats.
- 3:39Speaker 2: The problem is I get in the earth rummer now
- 3:40Speaker 2: and I have to tell myself to slow down. So
- 3:44Speaker 2: but no, no, it's actually just I think it's allowed
- 3:47Speaker 2: me to focus in life, and I think that's maybe
- 3:49Speaker 2: the lesson is. Yeah, I was, I was trying to
- 3:53Speaker 2: do too much. Yeah, you know, I was. I was
- 3:56Speaker 2: sitting in my garage with with Bruce Dorn who's been
- 3:58Speaker 2: on the podcast, and he said something around the lines
- 4:01Speaker 2: of Matta, here you say one weekend a month a
- 4:04Speaker 2: lot with your toys, and I realized that there's not
- 4:07Speaker 2: twenty weekends in a month, right, And you know, I've
- 4:11Speaker 2: just been working to downsize like the stuff.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it's not going to own you.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Yeah, because you definitely get to a point, you know,
- 4:18Speaker 2: like we live in this kind of age where you know,
- 4:23Speaker 2: stuff kind of translates to Instagram or whatever, and I
- 4:27Speaker 2: don't I don't even talk about all my stuff, right,
- 4:29Speaker 2: but you kind of you get caught up in it.
- 4:32Speaker 2: And I think, particularly coming out of COVID, where people
- 4:35Speaker 2: really got into stuff because you couldn't you know, I
- 4:39Speaker 2: mean for us, like we couldn't travel in the same
- 4:42Speaker 2: way that we were used to, and now travels become
- 4:45Speaker 2: just i mean like really expensive for you know how
- 4:48Speaker 2: we do it and shouse, we do a lot of
- 4:50Speaker 2: you know, kind of fly somewhere, rent a car, and yeah, sure, yeah,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I'm just tired of the stuff, you know.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Yeah, we all come to that point in our life
- 4:59Speaker 1: where we that it's it's the experiences and the people
- 5:03Speaker 1: that actually bring us joy in life. And if we
- 5:07Speaker 1: just trim down the things to the stuff that enables
- 5:11Speaker 1: spending time doing what we want to do with people
- 5:14Speaker 1: that we want to do it with, then usually it
- 5:16Speaker 1: all translates to it much more.
- 5:17Speaker 2: It's just joyful, the simplification thing, you know.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But we've all been through it, man, I've I've trimmed
- 5:23Speaker 1: a lot of cars too, so I hear you.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, and the simplification, don't forget it applies
- 5:29Speaker 2: to overlanding too, That's right. Stop bolting so much crapped
- 5:32Speaker 2: your cars. We've made the mistakes.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You have, that's right, That's right. Yeah, Literally, every time
- 5:38Speaker 1: we say something about payload or we say something about
- 5:42Speaker 1: too many things bolted to your cars, because I have
- 5:45Speaker 1: done that far too many times, and I find and
- 5:47Speaker 1: I finally I finally learned, you know, so twenty years later,
- 5:52Speaker 1: you know, I've finally learned, I finally learned. But we're
- 5:55Speaker 1: going to talk about game changers and not really many
- 5:59Speaker 1: of these things have a lot to do with stuff.
- 6:02Speaker 1: It's more things that enable the adventure that ended up
- 6:06Speaker 1: on the list. Although we did have we do have
- 6:08Speaker 1: a couple things on there, but they're pretty affordable. Pretty affordable, yeah,
- 6:11Speaker 1: for the most part. All right, So we're going to
- 6:14Speaker 1: start from number ten and work our way up to
- 6:17Speaker 1: number one. So Matt and I worked on kind of
- 6:20Speaker 1: curating this list together. It's one of the things that
- 6:22Speaker 1: we enjoy kind of riffing on, is what we're going
- 6:25Speaker 1: to talk about in these podcasts. But the number ten
- 6:28Speaker 1: item on this list is evsas and it's one of
- 6:34Speaker 1: the things that has been a real challenge for me
- 6:37Speaker 1: over the last couple decades. Is like, for example, if
- 6:40Speaker 1: you want to go through Central Asia, you either have
- 6:43Speaker 1: to send your passport off to a passport service in Washington,
- 6:47Speaker 1: DC before you leave, and you need to somehow figure
- 6:50Speaker 1: out what the dates are time when you're going to
- 6:52Speaker 1: come into the countries because most of these visas are
- 6:54Speaker 1: valid for thirty days, so you've got to be really
- 6:56Speaker 1: precise about that. And then you got to spend thousands
- 7:00Speaker 1: of dollars to get that done, and you lose your
- 7:02Speaker 1: passport for as long as it takes them to finish
- 7:05Speaker 1: all of those visas. So like through the stands, I had,
- 7:09Speaker 1: you know, a dozen visas that I needed to get,
- 7:12Speaker 1: so my passport was gone for over a month, and
- 7:14Speaker 1: it costs many thousands of dollars to get the service done.
- 7:19Speaker 1: The other way to do it, of course, is to
- 7:21Speaker 1: go to embassies as you travel, but then you're stuck.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Yeah, which is really great if you live in Washington.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right. So like if you're going through Central
- 7:29Speaker 1: Asia on the Silk Road, then you know, you go
- 7:31Speaker 1: to the to the embassy for Kazakhstan when you're in
- 7:35Speaker 1: Dushanby and you get the next visas you're going along.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But that can be also very time consuming and it
- 7:42Speaker 1: can add a lot to your expenses because you normally
- 7:45Speaker 1: have to get a hotel when you're in town. You
- 7:47Speaker 1: can't be camping out in your vehicle or it's more
- 7:49Speaker 1: difficult to so it adds a lot of complexity. Whereas
- 7:52Speaker 1: in the last probably five years, we've seen rapid adoption
- 7:58Speaker 1: of eVisa opportunity, you know, even like these new changes
- 8:02Speaker 1: in Europe, which unfortunately the news totally over dramaticize that
- 8:06Speaker 1: whole thing. Basically, you just have to have you have
- 8:09Speaker 1: to go into a system, and you have to say
- 8:11Speaker 1: who you are and what your passport is, and then
- 8:13Speaker 1: you get this traveler visa that you can then use.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I think it's for almost ten years, five five or
- 8:18Speaker 1: ten years, but it's a long time.
- 8:19Speaker 2: It's just kind of like the travel authorization that you
- 8:22Speaker 2: have to have.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Or for going to Australia or whatever else.
- 8:25Speaker 2: I don't know if I've had to do that for Europe,
- 8:27Speaker 2: but I guess I usually fly in Switzerland.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Well, and but it's also not active question the pretentious guy.
- 8:34Speaker 1: I mean, Switzerland's a good place to fly into.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Great, but for whatever reason, it's so cheap to fly
- 8:38Speaker 2: to from Prescott.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's great. Well, that's perfect. But Evisa's like,
- 8:43Speaker 1: particularly on this trip that I just did in Africa,
- 8:46Speaker 1: so I was able to, you know, while I was
- 8:48Speaker 1: in Tanzania, I'm able to get the eVisa for Kenyon now,
- 8:52Speaker 1: which is very simple, cost thirty five bucks. A couple
- 8:55Speaker 1: of days later, you get it in the in your email.
- 8:58Speaker 1: You show up to the border with with a QR
- 9:01Speaker 1: code like literally a little they scan it. They scan
- 9:03Speaker 1: it right there at the border. It's so simple, and
- 9:06Speaker 1: then it brings it up in their system. They verify
- 9:08Speaker 1: your passport, they stay up your passport, and you're in
- 9:10Speaker 1: in minutes. Even Ethiopia had eVisa, so I was able
- 9:14Speaker 1: to get these things while I'm traveling and not having
- 9:18Speaker 1: to always go into the main capital cities to go
- 9:21Speaker 1: to the consulate or go to the embassies to get
- 9:24Speaker 1: the visas. So it made it really really simple. But
- 9:27Speaker 1: it's also important to know that things don't all evisas
- 9:32Speaker 1: don't always translate to land borders. So I'm putting a
- 9:35Speaker 1: little bit of a cautionary tale out there for those
- 9:38Speaker 1: that are listening around evisas. So for example, in Malawi,
- 9:42Speaker 1: if you you can get ano E visa, or you
- 9:45Speaker 1: can even get a visa on arrival, but if you
- 9:48Speaker 1: land at the airport, if you go to the land border,
- 9:52Speaker 1: you cannot get you cannot get the visa at the border.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You cannot get visa on arrival. So you've got to
- 9:58Speaker 1: do it in advance, So be really careful around if
- 10:02Speaker 1: it says that there's an a visa available that may
- 10:04Speaker 1: only apply or if it says that there's visa on arrival,
- 10:08Speaker 1: it may only apply at the airport.
- 10:10Speaker 2: It might only apply to certain airports as well, because
- 10:13Speaker 2: let's have the you know, the.
- 10:15Speaker 1: The systems there, the capabilities there, so making sure that
- 10:19Speaker 1: you know, like, for example, the country of Jibouti, which
- 10:23Speaker 1: was the final country for the Africa trip, they have
- 10:25Speaker 1: a visa super simple. People are shtartening to go to
- 10:28Speaker 1: Jibouti as tourists, but the visa only applies for flying in.
- 10:32Speaker 1: If you want to cross a land border, you have
- 10:35Speaker 1: to get a traditional visa, which we had to go
- 10:37Speaker 1: to in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia and took a couple
- 10:40Speaker 1: of days at the at the embassy to finally get
- 10:43Speaker 1: that done. So it just you got to make sure
- 10:46Speaker 1: you're staying on top of it. But the visas have
- 10:48Speaker 1: really been a game changer for those that are traveling
- 10:51Speaker 1: with a lot of flexibility in their schedule. It just
- 10:53Speaker 1: makes it so much easier and less expensive in most cases. Yeah,
- 10:57Speaker 1: so that's I think that's a big one. All right.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So the matt this one you suggested, and I think
- 11:03Speaker 1: it's totally on point.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Oh, lithium batteries, Yeah, I'm just I geek out on them.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Well, and I think I think that really on this
- 11:14Speaker 2: what we're trying to say is that there's you know,
- 11:16Speaker 2: I'm going to say, the more custom solutions where you're
- 11:19Speaker 2: physically buying a battery and a management system and you're
- 11:23Speaker 2: you're you're installing it into your vehicle. But you know,
- 11:27Speaker 2: these new portable lithium batteries, you know, kind of the
- 11:29Speaker 2: Goal zero style or the Jackerie an the Jackerie, the
- 11:33Speaker 2: Dometic PLB. You know, it's it's interesting for me, particularly
- 11:38Speaker 2: for you know, just let's start with just the portable
- 11:42Speaker 2: stuff for light trucks. I don't know why you would
- 11:45Speaker 2: do a dual battery anymore unless you have really really high,
- 11:49Speaker 2: you know, energy requirements. The technology is just getting so
- 11:53Speaker 2: good and the fridges are getting you know, very efficient.
- 11:55Speaker 2: I mean some of the fridges that are coming out
- 11:58Speaker 2: even have lithium batteries in them.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Yeah. So it kind of takes care of your dual
- 12:01Speaker 1: battery system all in one unit.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And it's and it's one of those things that
- 12:07Speaker 2: it also reduces the complexity in the vehicle.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Yep. And then when you remove the fridge to go
- 12:12Speaker 1: back to daily driver duties. You're also removing all of
- 12:14Speaker 1: that weighting complexity from it from it too.
- 12:17Speaker 2: So particularly I think for like the North American Overlander,
- 12:22Speaker 2: maybe you're not going international, you're going out camping on
- 12:25Speaker 2: the weekends. I have no idea why people do these
- 12:27Speaker 2: really complicated built in you know, dual batteries or you
- 12:32Speaker 2: know dual battery systems that are using lithium. I think
- 12:36Speaker 2: the portable stuff is just so it just works.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And I think that's actually what people are usually doing now. Yeah,
- 12:41Speaker 1: So like even the Scout camper that I had had
- 12:44Speaker 1: a goal zero lithium dual battery system or battery system
- 12:47Speaker 1: in it, but it also had a module that you
- 12:50Speaker 1: could plug into it that allowed it to charge at
- 12:53Speaker 1: fifty amps off of the vehicle. So it is it
- 12:56Speaker 1: is like a dual battery system. Yeah. The only difference
- 12:59Speaker 1: is that it's difficult to like, if your starting battery
- 13:02Speaker 1: goes down, it's difficult to get that much power going
- 13:05Speaker 1: the other direction. There are some of them that have
- 13:08Speaker 1: Anderson connections, so you could devise a jump a jumper
- 13:13Speaker 1: cable system. So just make sure you know that going
- 13:16Speaker 1: into it, because that's one of the advantages of a
- 13:17Speaker 1: dual battery system is when you go into combining mode,
- 13:21Speaker 1: you can actually if your starting battery has failed and
- 13:24Speaker 1: your house batteries are full, you can jump start your
- 13:27Speaker 1: vehicle from your own dual battery system. So just making
- 13:31Speaker 1: sure that you have the ability to go the other
- 13:33Speaker 1: direction or bring along a jumper pack with you, which
- 13:36Speaker 1: is obviously a.
- 13:36Speaker 2: Really simple purpose, which really really cool.
- 13:40Speaker 1: The whole thing is like super lightweight, even between the
- 13:43Speaker 1: two of them, you.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Know, to jump over to like I'm going to say,
- 13:47Speaker 2: like the van side, the trailer side, or like the
- 13:50Speaker 2: expedition vehicle side. The things that lithium now allows you
- 13:54Speaker 2: to do, Like we did a lithium conversion in the
- 13:57Speaker 2: Earth Rummer. And when I say conversion, I mean we
- 14:00Speaker 2: just put some lithium batteries in it.
- 14:02Speaker 1: You know, he removed all these agms and put in these.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Save five hundred pounds, so we had four eight D
- 14:08Speaker 2: batteries previously we replaced them with I forgot the name
- 14:13Speaker 2: of the company. Anyway, they were there were you know,
- 14:16Speaker 2: more of a US based company.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Not there's some good ones. There's battle Borne now, yeah,
- 14:22Speaker 1: there's a battle Red Arc finally has no lithium batteries
- 14:25Speaker 1: now they're awesome.
- 14:27Speaker 2: You know, basically what I looked for is I looked
- 14:29Speaker 2: for accountability because a lot of these companies are just
- 14:31Speaker 2: rebranding Ali Baba batteries like it's it's you can tell
- 14:35Speaker 2: because they're all basically the same size and they all
- 14:38Speaker 2: have like the same font, Like they don't even go
- 14:41Speaker 2: through the you know, the effort of changing the font right,
- 14:45Speaker 2: you know Master vault as I think who did ours?
- 14:49Speaker 2: But anyways, so saved a huge amount of weight. So
- 14:52Speaker 2: my earth romer, isn't you also increase the amount of ampowers. Yeah,
- 14:56Speaker 2: we went from one twenty agm, which is you basically
- 15:00Speaker 2: calculated at about a fifty percent effective use depth of draw. Yeah,
- 15:06Speaker 2: lithium you can take them all the way down. And
- 15:10Speaker 2: also they just don't drop as much. So when we
- 15:13Speaker 2: turn on the air conditioning or return on the you know,
- 15:16Speaker 2: anything particularly that's using the inverter, we're converting from thirteen
- 15:22Speaker 2: two thirteen four vaults rather than converting from twelve to two.
- 15:27Speaker 2: So you know, voltage, amperage, all that stuff. It just
- 15:30Speaker 2: actually works more efficient floats or higher. I mean we
- 15:32Speaker 2: can run and they recharge so much faster. Yeah, you know,
- 15:36Speaker 2: you don't really realize how long it takes the AGM
- 15:39Speaker 2: stuff to recharge.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Yeah. That Explorer X one four or five trailer that
- 15:44Speaker 1: I've mentioned before, it's like my favorite overland trailer. But
- 15:48Speaker 1: it's got one thousand and eighty amp hours of lithium
- 15:53Speaker 1: and one thousand watts of solar. Yeah, it has the
- 15:56Speaker 1: twelve dometic air conditioner and I have never even thought.
- 16:00Speaker 2: About you just don't have to think about it.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I mean, it has an induction induction stovetop. Like you
- 16:06Speaker 1: just do all the things. Yeah, and you know, I
- 16:09Speaker 1: mean it does. The one challenge around electric that hasn't
- 16:13Speaker 1: been solved yet is heating. So like if you need
- 16:16Speaker 1: to heat the space, those normally are done, Yours is
- 16:20Speaker 1: probably done with a diesel diesel s bar style. In
- 16:24Speaker 1: the X one four five it uses like a combo
- 16:29Speaker 1: water heater or the Truma one, which is they're very
- 16:34Speaker 1: very good, but you've got you just got to have
- 16:37Speaker 1: enough energy volume to heat, and that usually comes down
- 16:42Speaker 1: to propane or diesel. So I've not seen a good
- 16:45Speaker 1: air heater yet that's electric. Yeah, I'm sure it'll come out, but.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah, you know you can you can do like the
- 16:51Speaker 2: heat pump things. I mean, we're geeking out in that
- 16:54Speaker 2: in the house. We actually made our house, like I'll
- 16:57Speaker 2: run on lithium, which is so fun, solar power wall
- 17:00Speaker 2: solar and power Tesla power walls. But yeah, I just
- 17:04Speaker 2: think it's a huge thing because.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Don't you have like eight point six Jigi wats on
- 17:07Speaker 1: your roof something like that. I like, how many watts
- 17:11Speaker 1: it's kilowatts? Yours is actually so much it's in kilowatts.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Now, I uh, but lithium has just for us, Like
- 17:20Speaker 2: I actually now take that to the earth rom or
- 17:23Speaker 2: to the racetrack when it's warm, because I got'ta have
- 17:27Speaker 2: to run a generator. I have like twenty four to
- 17:29Speaker 2: seven air conditioning if I want it. We've been able
- 17:32Speaker 2: to expand where and when we camp living in Arizona.
- 17:36Speaker 2: It's just a you know, it's just a reality.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Like even on really nice days, the afternoons can get
- 17:43Speaker 1: hot in a camper and it's just nice to have.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Like in that X one four five, I can run
- 17:48Speaker 1: the AC for like a couple hours in the afternoon
- 17:51Speaker 1: when it gets baking hot in the trailer, and then
- 17:54Speaker 1: it's nice and cool for when you go to sleep.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's just not an issue. And then we
- 17:58Speaker 2: can run Starlink. We have the big high performance star
- 18:01Speaker 2: Link dish, which is great going down the road and everything.
- 18:03Speaker 2: But we just leave it on now, where before I
- 18:05Speaker 2: had to be more judicious with when it was on
- 18:08Speaker 2: and off. Sure, you know, which actually did have some
- 18:12Speaker 2: benefits because now I just am constantly connected and I
- 18:15Speaker 2: don't get that disconnection.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Sure with campaign, there's a yin and the yang to everything, right,
- 18:20Speaker 2: you just don't have to worry about it. And the
- 18:22Speaker 2: pricing on lithium, like it's come down a lot, Like
- 18:25Speaker 2: I remember when it kind of really first became an option,
- 18:28Speaker 2: and obviously like I want an import company in the
- 18:32Speaker 2: overlad space, but you know, I was looking at these
- 18:34Speaker 2: batteries were like fifteen hundred dollars for like the Changshin
- 18:38Speaker 2: Ali Baba batteries. Now they're like one hundred and fifty
- 18:41Speaker 2: dollars on Amazon.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Yeah, when I when we did we did a huge
- 18:45Speaker 1: battery test about six years ago in Overland Journal and
- 18:48Speaker 1: we had like a really high quality lithium battery and
- 18:52Speaker 1: it was three thousand dollars and it would have been
- 18:55Speaker 1: the equivalent of like a group twenty four, So, I
- 18:58Speaker 1: mean it did have I remember that one. Yeah, I mean,
- 19:00Speaker 1: these these batteries were incredibly expensive, and now you can
- 19:05Speaker 1: get them in all the sizes. They are very reliable
- 19:08Speaker 1: and they're charging. You know, there was always issues of
- 19:11Speaker 1: like if you flatten the battery, it was hard to
- 19:13Speaker 1: get them to restart charging again. But now they got
- 19:15Speaker 1: that all sorted out in their charge controllers, internal charge controllers, and.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I've never heard of anybody having problems with like fire
- 19:22Speaker 2: or anything like.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just it's not me more likely, I mean
- 19:27Speaker 1: internal combustion cars burned down to Yeah, it's just you know,
- 19:31Speaker 1: if an EV burns down, it's just a lot more
- 19:32Speaker 1: it's a bit more dramatic. It's a bit more dramatic.
- 19:35Speaker 1: But they really don't they really don't burn up that often.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Like it's everything's a little bit again over dramatic, dramatic size.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:42Speaker 1: So all right, so then number eight on our list
- 19:46Speaker 1: is all these travel Facebook groups and forums. It's one
- 19:51Speaker 1: of the downsides of Instagram is that you lose a
- 19:55Speaker 1: little bit of that back and forth discussion around more
- 19:59Speaker 1: technical side subjects. And that's still where Internet forums and
- 20:05Speaker 1: Facebook groups Shine Group. Facebook groups are a little bit
- 20:09Speaker 1: more challenging around kind of searching topics, but like even
- 20:14Speaker 1: Expedition Portal, there's still so many active trip threads and
- 20:19Speaker 1: discussion threads because it's really easy to review those in
- 20:25Speaker 1: an archive find them within the forum. But for example,
- 20:29Speaker 1: I found the fixer that I needed to find for
- 20:33Speaker 1: Ethiopia to get the Grenadier into Ethiopia. I found it
- 20:36Speaker 1: through a Facebook group, the Africa the Africa Overland Facebook group,
- 20:42Speaker 1: and everybody was great. You know, you still deal with
- 20:45Speaker 1: a lot of the like this guy did Africa twenty
- 20:49Speaker 1: years ago and he's still super angry at everybody who's
- 20:52Speaker 1: doing it now, you know, like like back in my day,
- 20:55Speaker 1: there's a lot of that still. But for the.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Most party people on the internet exactly, I don't it's
- 21:01Speaker 2: just I don't understand why the Internet makes people so angry.
- 21:04Speaker 2: But or I guess they just you know, they want
- 21:06Speaker 2: to signal whatever they got the validation. Yeah, but those
- 21:10Speaker 2: Facebook groups are really powerful tools because once the travelers
- 21:15Speaker 2: know like, oh, everybody's on this group, then all of
- 21:19Speaker 2: the active travelers are kind of engaging in that way,
- 21:22Speaker 2: and then you can you can connect with them through
- 21:24Speaker 2: a direct message and then usually that translates then into
- 21:28Speaker 2: you've got someone's WhatsApp number, and then really all of
- 21:31Speaker 2: the active communications with other active travelers happen in WhatsApp groups,
- 21:36Speaker 2: and there are some East Africa WhatsApp groups as well,
- 21:41Speaker 2: where it's just a whole bunch of people that are
- 21:44Speaker 2: actively traveling that are all communicating together through a WhatsApp group,
- 21:47Speaker 2: which of course is.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Still made meta as well as well, but the it
- 21:51Speaker 1: works really really well and it allows for this active
- 21:55Speaker 1: update of these are the issues that we're encountering. This
- 21:58Speaker 1: is this was success full as of last week, and
- 22:02Speaker 1: I think it gives travelers a lot of confidence. A
- 22:04Speaker 1: lot of this stuff that we're talking about today. Is
- 22:07Speaker 1: it either about removing the friction of travel or reducing
- 22:10Speaker 1: the anxiety of travel, or making it that much more
- 22:14Speaker 1: accessible because you don't have to be you know, Robert
- 22:18Speaker 1: Young Pelton to go travel these places where you know,
- 22:22Speaker 1: you have someone with an incredible amount of travel experience,
- 22:25Speaker 1: but now it's just so much more accessible to the
- 22:27Speaker 1: average person.
- 22:28Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think you can just plan more like
- 22:30Speaker 2: we're planning a Pan American highway trip and we're on
- 22:33Speaker 2: like the PanAm traveler group.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Perfect.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Well, but now I'm like able to like, you know,
- 22:37Speaker 2: some say, oh, we had a great experience in the
- 22:39Speaker 2: campsite here. Okay, cool, Well I take that and I
- 22:41Speaker 2: put it on my Google my map.
- 22:42Speaker 1: That's right.
- 22:43Speaker 2: You know, you see steff of oh there's a roadblock here,
- 22:47Speaker 2: there's protests here or whatever. Like before you would just
- 22:50Speaker 2: roll up on that.
- 22:51Speaker 1: That's right.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Now you kind of you know, you just have more information.
- 22:56Speaker 2: And again I think it's that you know, we're that
- 22:58Speaker 2: reducing the anxiety is making it more approachable.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you're just removing so many friction points or anxiety
- 23:05Speaker 1: points for people, and so that's why we see so
- 23:07Speaker 1: many more people traveling. A lot of that has been
- 23:10Speaker 1: has really enabled travel, which I think is a positive thing.
- 23:13Speaker 1: We can all harken back to the days, you know,
- 23:16Speaker 1: when when Tom Shephard crossed the Sahara using a sun compass,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and I certainly think that that is as cool as
- 23:22Speaker 1: it gets, but it really limits it to people with
- 23:25Speaker 1: his level of skill. So whereas today, you know, a
- 23:30Speaker 1: retired couple can have never traveled before. They can hop
- 23:34Speaker 1: in their whatever, their wrangler and off they go. Yep. Yeah,
- 23:38Speaker 1: So it makes a huge difference these, So check out
- 23:40Speaker 1: the Facebook groups and the forums. Obviously, Expedition Portal is
- 23:44Speaker 1: something that we manage and there's a lot of active
- 23:47Speaker 1: discussions around adventures on that as well. So number seven
- 23:52Speaker 1: on our list is another one that you suggested.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Yeah, kind of these just these small affordable campers, you know,
- 24:00Speaker 2: the go fast campers, the at campers we'll just call them,
- 24:04Speaker 2: like the wedge style campers they offer, or even like
- 24:08Speaker 2: a Scout like, yeah, a Scout camper.
- 24:10Speaker 1: These are simple.
- 24:11Speaker 2: It used to be that, you know, you had to
- 24:13Speaker 2: spend big bucks to get some comfort. You know, there
- 24:16Speaker 2: really wasn't much between a roof tent and an expedition
- 24:21Speaker 2: truck or roof tent truck camper expedition truck. Now, I mean,
- 24:27Speaker 2: if you're in a budget, like you can find it
- 24:28Speaker 2: go Fast on Facebook Marketplace for like five or six grand,
- 24:32Speaker 2: which is not that much more than a hard shell No,
- 24:34Speaker 2: did you figure a hard shell roof tent and then
- 24:36Speaker 2: you figure, you know, you have to have a way
- 24:39Speaker 2: to mount it, whether that's on your roof or you're
- 24:41Speaker 2: doing a bedrock with a pickup truck or something. But
- 24:44Speaker 2: then you also gain some privacy, you know, just the
- 24:47Speaker 2: ability to the ability to stand up, the ability to
- 24:50Speaker 2: stand up and change is huge. You know, you're in
- 24:54Speaker 2: these campgrounds and oftentimes, like say you're in the PanAm
- 24:57Speaker 2: or you're just traveling. It's not like you know, the
- 25:00Speaker 2: North American over anything, where you're in this vast you know,
- 25:04Speaker 2: expanse of emptiness and there's nobody around and you could
- 25:08Speaker 2: run around naked if you wanted, right, you know, there's
- 25:10Speaker 2: going to be somebody like three feet from you. So
- 25:12Speaker 2: the ability to have a little bit of privacy or
- 25:15Speaker 2: bad weather, yeah, just everything where you're sick that day. Yeah,
- 25:19Speaker 2: it just really helps. Yeah, and it also opens up
- 25:23Speaker 2: the types of vehicles that you can take on these trips.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Generally speaking, the larger the vehicle that you take, the
- 25:32Speaker 2: more compromise you're going to make. Like as we plan
- 25:35Speaker 2: this PanAm trip, and you know, you and I are
- 25:37Speaker 2: talking about it, Oh cool, nice little colonial village. I
- 25:41Speaker 2: don't fit. Yeah, you're not even going to get near it.
- 25:44Speaker 2: It's just not going to go there, whether like I said,
- 25:46Speaker 2: it's the power lines or whatever. Where you know, if
- 25:49Speaker 2: you had a you know, like the New Tacoma, which
- 25:52Speaker 2: is the Tacomba was finally good again, which is great.
- 25:55Speaker 2: But a mid sized truck you can have with one
- 25:57Speaker 2: of these be completely within the payload of the vehicle,
- 26:00Speaker 2: so you're not worried about, you know, being in a
- 26:03Speaker 2: laguna's root and cracking your frame or something. I think
- 26:07Speaker 2: they're just really really cool and it allows you to
- 26:10Speaker 2: just keep it simple. Oftentimes these things weigh somewhere between
- 26:14Speaker 2: two hundred and fifty and four hundred.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Pounds yep, so they can fit within the payload of
- 26:19Speaker 1: like a mid sized truck. And one of the realities too,
- 26:22Speaker 1: is that the mid sized truck configuration that so many
- 26:25Speaker 1: manufacturers are only selling now is the four door short bed.
- 26:30Speaker 1: So like if you want to get the new ZR
- 26:33Speaker 1: two Bison AEV, you can only get it in the
- 26:37Speaker 1: four door with a five foot bed. So the Go
- 26:40Speaker 1: Fast camper or the at camper, those allow you to
- 26:44Speaker 1: have a genuine sleeping camping situation because it it you know,
- 26:48Speaker 1: it hangs over the cab, so you really do end
- 26:52Speaker 1: up with an incredibly capable, comfortable vehicle. And they're like
- 26:56Speaker 1: if you were to look at you know, like a
- 27:00Speaker 1: like a Nissan Frontier of four years ago and a
- 27:04Speaker 1: used Go Fast camper for less than twenty five grand
- 27:09Speaker 1: or close to it, like you're you're off.
- 27:12Speaker 2: To the races, and honestly, like there's people that do
- 27:14Speaker 2: it for less. I mean you see, you know, you
- 27:17Speaker 2: don't have to have this to travel, but yeah, just
- 27:20Speaker 2: the combination of these small campers with you know, affordable
- 27:25Speaker 2: trucks that you don't have to put a lot of
- 27:26Speaker 2: money into maintenance, and they're new and reliable and they
- 27:29Speaker 2: get decent fuel economy.
- 27:31Speaker 1: And they're super capable. A lot of them have rear lockers,
- 27:34Speaker 1: and that also includes like the URSA Minor stuff. I mean,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I think John Gish has done such a great job.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I mean like there was a part of me that
- 27:42Speaker 1: always wanted to do a big trip in the in
- 27:44Speaker 1: the the Honda element of the camp with the e
- 27:47Speaker 1: camper on the top of it, and there were people
- 27:49Speaker 1: who were cult following, Yeah, and there were several people
- 27:52Speaker 1: who drove them the length of the Pan American, which
- 27:54Speaker 1: I think is just like, so it's so awesome.
- 27:59Speaker 2: It's a Honda, Yeah, like it's it's just gonna.
- 28:01Speaker 1: Work, it will and it's a little box.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Yeah. And then you know, URSA Minor has the the
- 28:06Speaker 2: Wrangler campers like Dan Grek used on his Africa trip,
- 28:09Speaker 2: and I still think, like, like one, I just like Wranglers.
- 28:13Speaker 2: They're easy to drive, they're they're built for technical terraines
- 28:17Speaker 2: through the forum factor of the body.
- 28:19Speaker 1: They're also kind of fun. Like when people encounter jeeps
- 28:22Speaker 1: in other countries, they tend to they tend to smile
- 28:26Speaker 1: a lot because fun cars. People know jeeps are fun.
- 28:29Speaker 1: And I mean if Dan, I mean, I know Dan
- 28:32Speaker 1: has an affinity for jeep, but like if someone with
- 28:35Speaker 1: the travel chops of Dan Grek is like, I'm gonna
- 28:37Speaker 1: build a Wrangler and put a ursa minor on the
- 28:39Speaker 1: top of it. Now he he did mention that, you know,
- 28:42Speaker 1: really bad weather, really high wind. There were some limitations,
- 28:45Speaker 1: but for the most part, like that's what that guy picked.
- 28:48Speaker 2: So I you know, I think they're really cool. And
- 28:52Speaker 2: you know, I guess moving a little bit away from
- 28:55Speaker 2: like the small affordable stuff you know you have like
- 29:00Speaker 2: maybe I'll put the Scout in that you like the
- 29:01Speaker 2: Scout for a little bit more money of like the
- 29:04Speaker 2: Atia Terra and you have kind of some of these
- 29:07Speaker 2: smaller campers that offer maybe that's where you're gonna get
- 29:10Speaker 2: some twelve old ac. You're gonna have, you know, a
- 29:15Speaker 2: door that closes, you know, but you can get a Scout.
- 29:19Speaker 2: I mean, what are scout campers?
- 29:21Speaker 1: They can be expensive if you get like into a
- 29:23Speaker 1: keen eye, but if you're gonna go, I think they
- 29:25Speaker 1: have one that's called the Tuck Tuck Tuck or something.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I can't remember the name exactly, but it's it goes
- 29:31Speaker 1: in the back of like a gladiator and that thing's
- 29:33Speaker 1: twenty rand, you know, and it's got a bed and
- 29:38Speaker 1: a couch and a fridge. Yeah something A heater'll.
- 29:41Speaker 2: Call it, like twenty or thirty grand. Whether you're going
- 29:44Speaker 2: with the mid size, the full size or whatever, you
- 29:48Speaker 2: can have a door to shut on the world. Yes,
- 29:51Speaker 2: when you know that the dogs won't stop barking in
- 29:54Speaker 2: the campground that you're in or whatever.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Yeah, the Scout on the GMC, for me, I think
- 30:00Speaker 1: has been my favorite. I did, and I lived out
- 30:04Speaker 1: of it for months, and like there were in almost
- 30:08Speaker 1: every case, I had no desire to go to a
- 30:10Speaker 1: hotel because I already had my little house with me. Yeah,
- 30:14Speaker 1: and I think integrating a twelve old AC in there
- 30:17Speaker 1: with a little bit more battery power would have been
- 30:19Speaker 1: probably the only thing I would have changed for long term,
- 30:22Speaker 1: because you know, I do like the desert and there's
- 30:24Speaker 1: times when you need a little bit of air conditioning,
- 30:26Speaker 1: a little bit of comfort just to sleep.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Well, there's a travel couple there more tells on the
- 30:31Speaker 2: move on that right. You can follow them on Instagram.
- 30:34Speaker 2: I think they're actually been doing like Scout camper sales
- 30:37Speaker 2: and outfitting. Now, yeah, I think they actually put a
- 30:40Speaker 2: Tesla battery in there.
- 30:41Speaker 1: They did, and they ended up putting air conditioning. Yeah.
- 30:44Speaker 2: We ran into them on our way to the Arctic,
- 30:47Speaker 2: you know, two years ago, and they drove you know,
- 30:51Speaker 2: I think they did most of the panem at Central
- 30:52Speaker 2: America and like to have ac yeah in a Scout
- 30:57Speaker 2: I mean, you know, like, yeah, this stuff isn't cheap,
- 31:00Speaker 2: but the point being that you no longer have to
- 31:03Speaker 2: buy an Earth Cruiser or an Earth Roamer or a
- 31:06Speaker 2: Unicat to get some of those.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you're still dealing with composite and plus a Scout camper,
- 31:13Speaker 1: especially like the ones that would go in the back
- 31:15Speaker 1: of a Tacoma or in the back of a jeep
- 31:20Speaker 1: Gladiator or whatever. They're really lightweight, like seventy hundred pounds.
- 31:23Speaker 2: He's done, you can sell them. Yeah, that's right, you know,
- 31:25Speaker 2: and they're really desirable. That's the thing is what's your
- 31:27Speaker 2: roof going to be worth after you slept in it
- 31:30Speaker 2: for a year. Yeah, and it smells like a hockey
- 31:33Speaker 2: locker room. You speak the truth, man's the truth.
- 31:38Speaker 1: Yeah. So I think these these little campers like that,
- 31:41Speaker 1: especially like the go fast the at stuff. Those are
- 31:45Speaker 1: really really useful or even for example, you know, putting
- 31:49Speaker 1: an Alu cab on top of a grenadier or on
- 31:52Speaker 1: top of the.
- 31:52Speaker 2: Kaya campers are really cool. Actually, we had one of
- 31:56Speaker 2: those in Africa for for a little bit and loved it. Yeah,
- 32:00Speaker 2: like super durable, simple.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Really well made. They tend to be a little bit heavier,
- 32:05Speaker 1: but they're meant to survive long term.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Trysma's rental in Africa.
- 32:10Speaker 1: So they really do hold up. Yeah, those are really clever.
- 32:14Speaker 1: And the fact that you can bolt one to the
- 32:15Speaker 1: top of a grenadier or put it on the top
- 32:17Speaker 1: of your old school defender, it's like a very cool solution.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I think. Yeah, it doesn't really change the footprint. You
- 32:23Speaker 1: can still put the car in a container, which I
- 32:25Speaker 1: think is a factor. And that's the same with these
- 32:28Speaker 1: other campers outside of the Scout, they're all low profile.
- 32:32Speaker 1: All right, So number six on our list we have vans,
- 32:35Speaker 1: which you and I kind of came to that same
- 32:37Speaker 1: conclusion at about the same time because we well, first
- 32:40Speaker 1: of all, we had we have the first electric sprinter
- 32:45Speaker 1: in the in the in the UH in the Southwest. Yeah,
- 32:49Speaker 1: you wouldn't know it. In fact, the Mercedes badge on
- 32:53Speaker 1: the front, the emblem on the front is what you
- 32:55Speaker 1: open to plug in the charging, the charging and it
- 32:59Speaker 1: drives great. It drives, It's faster than the diesel version
- 33:05Speaker 1: for sure, and the weight is so low. It just
- 33:09Speaker 1: feels really really production ready it. I think people are
- 33:15Speaker 1: going to start, especially those that that maybe like in
- 33:18Speaker 1: your configuration where you can charge it at your house,
- 33:22Speaker 1: you want to go do little day trips or whatever,
- 33:24Speaker 1: or you or you you know, you like to go,
- 33:27Speaker 1: you know, rock hounding or whatever, take your dogs out
- 33:29Speaker 1: as perfect.
- 33:30Speaker 2: The electric and we're not really this is a tangent,
- 33:33Speaker 2: I get it. But the idea of an electric RV
- 33:37Speaker 2: makes a lot more sense than I than I believe
- 33:39Speaker 2: people think because they are oftentimes only transitting, they're transitting
- 33:44Speaker 2: on highways, or they're transiting from campground to campground and
- 33:48Speaker 2: you have fifty amp service at most rights, they're already
- 33:51Speaker 2: they're they're already wired for it for EVS, that's right. Like, yes,
- 33:56Speaker 2: they require a lot of energy, but not as much
- 33:59Speaker 2: as you'd think. Like like my electric hot water heater
- 34:02Speaker 2: uses as much energy on a daily basis as I
- 34:05Speaker 2: do in my tesla, like kill a lot for kill
- 34:08Speaker 2: a lot, I use about sixteen kilowatts a day for both.
- 34:13Speaker 2: So you know, it'll be interesting to see as infrastructure
- 34:19Speaker 2: grows for these vehicles. When you're leaving it at a campground, Yeah,
- 34:23Speaker 2: maybe they only have fifteen amp service. You can just
- 34:25Speaker 2: plug it in then if it takes a data charge
- 34:27Speaker 2: or two days to charge, okay, but then you're cutting
- 34:31Speaker 2: your number one cost as a traveler. But just the
- 34:35Speaker 2: form factor of the van is I think what we're
- 34:37Speaker 2: talking about, and you know, I think with the with
- 34:40Speaker 2: the introduction of the four wheel drive sprinter and then
- 34:42Speaker 2: the all wheel drive transit and the huge aftermarket that's
- 34:46Speaker 2: around them, you know, we're not necessarily talking about the
- 34:49Speaker 2: guys that put trophy truck lights on the top of
- 34:52Speaker 2: their sprinter van that can do fifteen mile an hour
- 34:54Speaker 2: off road when Laman Durrance racers have two headlights, but
- 35:02Speaker 2: you have your ability for DIY is just huge.
- 35:06Speaker 1: Yea. And I think it's a blank canvas, like even
- 35:09Speaker 1: this one that's parked just right outside it is a
- 35:11Speaker 1: blank canvas to build.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Out as a footprint of a vehicle goes. The van
- 35:15Speaker 2: is obviously meant to transport goods. You know, it's it's
- 35:19Speaker 2: or it's for a service business. You know, you don't
- 35:24Speaker 2: have a separation between the cab and and what ends
- 35:27Speaker 2: up being your living quarters. Sure, and you know, now
- 35:30Speaker 2: you can get insallation panels, you can get drop in
- 35:34Speaker 2: you know, sinks, you can get water tanks, and it's
- 35:37Speaker 2: all kind of optimized and you can do it in
- 35:39Speaker 2: a way that I think bang for the buck for comfort,
- 35:45Speaker 2: fuel economy, reliability, serviceability like that. Particularly, the sprinter.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Is just and they're available in all those countries. So
- 35:55Speaker 1: like if you're in Argentina they sell sprinter vans, Yeah,
- 35:58Speaker 1: you're going to go in the Mercedes dealership and they're
- 36:00Speaker 1: going to be able to work on your vehicle. They
- 36:03Speaker 1: most of the deliveries, most of the commercial servicing in
- 36:06Speaker 1: Europe happens in a sprinter van. Or something similar. Yeah,
- 36:10Speaker 1: something similar sized. So someone seeing you driving it around
- 36:15Speaker 1: or parked on the side of the road or whatever,
- 36:17Speaker 1: it doesn't look white sprinter van. It doesn't look out
- 36:20Speaker 1: of place at all. You also, depending on the configuration,
- 36:25Speaker 1: you can rotate your seats around and you're now in
- 36:28Speaker 1: the living space. They're very space efficient. I also they're
- 36:33Speaker 1: easy to drive to like a sprinter van. Like even
- 36:36Speaker 1: this EV one is just it's like one hand on
- 36:38Speaker 1: the wheel, you know, if you're if you're driving an
- 36:40Speaker 1: l MTV with a camper on the back of it,
- 36:42Speaker 1: like you are paying attention. Yeah, whereas with whereas with
- 36:48Speaker 1: the this the sprinters it's just like it's like driving
- 36:51Speaker 1: a car. They're very easy for people to drive.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yeah. And they're not really that big.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, like the this one's big, this one's yeah.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Yeah, like that's perfect. Yeah, I mean it fits in
- 37:06Speaker 2: every parking spot. You know, they're a little bit tall.
- 37:08Speaker 2: I encourage I was encourageable. Don't put a roof rack
- 37:10Speaker 2: on the top, don't put a bunch of heavy boxes
- 37:13Speaker 2: on the top, like you know, take less stuff, take
- 37:17Speaker 2: less stuff, right, but you know, putting a bunch of
- 37:19Speaker 2: weight up putting hundreds of pounds on top of a
- 37:22Speaker 2: nine foot lever is gonna make it handle.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Like yeah, and then it just is that much more
- 37:28Speaker 1: restrictive on taking it on trails because there's most trails
- 37:31Speaker 1: are not driven with vehicles that tall. So just keeping
- 37:35Speaker 1: the roof really really simple, I think is a good thing.
- 37:38Speaker 1: And like on a one seventy two, like this van,
- 37:41Speaker 1: like there is a ton of rum ins either. Yeah,
- 37:43Speaker 1: like you could have a full bathroom. You don't have
- 37:46Speaker 1: to swap between a bed and a dinette. There's plenty
- 37:49Speaker 1: of room in that thing, and I can. I mean,
- 37:51Speaker 1: and when we talk about the vans being a game changer,
- 37:54Speaker 1: it's not so much that I'm advocating for a van
- 37:56Speaker 1: or that I would necessarily even use one, but they
- 38:00Speaker 1: have absolutely been a game changer. They are everywhere, Like
- 38:03Speaker 1: the number of sprinter van overland sprinter van conversions that
- 38:07Speaker 1: are happening from Field Van and everybody else. I mean,
- 38:11Speaker 1: these are amazing buildouts. They're fairly capable off road. I
- 38:16Speaker 1: mean they're not They're not like a wrangler, of course,
- 38:19Speaker 1: but like you can do most remote roads with those vehicles.
- 38:24Speaker 2: I know that all kind of mass production RVs have
- 38:28Speaker 2: their little quibbles and nibbles and issues. But like the
- 38:31Speaker 2: Winnebego Revel, Yeah, you know they're now finally like like
- 38:34Speaker 2: during pandemic they were selling for oversticker and you couldn't
- 38:38Speaker 2: get one. I mean now like almost any dealer RV
- 38:41Speaker 2: dealer in America has one.
- 38:43Speaker 1: That's right. They're just sitting there ready to go. And
- 38:45Speaker 1: they have the new Echo, which is more like an
- 38:49Speaker 1: RV on the back of a sprinter. So yeah, even
- 38:52Speaker 1: more space on the inside to spend depending on what
- 38:54Speaker 1: you need.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah, but you can, you know, if you're just staying
- 38:57Speaker 2: in North America and Canada. I think the cool thing is,
- 39:01Speaker 2: you know, all we live in this world of finance,
- 39:04Speaker 2: so you can get a twenty or thirty year RV
- 39:06Speaker 2: alone on these thingsys exactly. You know, keep your if
- 39:09Speaker 2: you're gonna if you know that you're just going to
- 39:10Speaker 2: do it for a year, think of all the comfort
- 39:13Speaker 2: and warranty that you get and how predictable your expenses
- 39:16Speaker 2: could be sure for that year two year trip. But
- 39:20Speaker 2: then it's it's a it's a it's a it's a
- 39:23Speaker 2: it's a commodity. Afterwards, like you just I mean, if
- 39:27Speaker 2: you don't care to take it back to the dealer
- 39:29Speaker 2: and they sell it for you.
- 39:30Speaker 1: That's right, And you've also you also get back all
- 39:33Speaker 1: of that time that you would have spent building it out.
- 39:36Speaker 1: You get all that time back because they are they
- 39:38Speaker 1: really are turn key. So just being a little bit
- 39:41Speaker 1: more open to and like if you work with a
- 39:42Speaker 1: company like like Field Van, they're going to be able
- 39:45Speaker 1: to customize it to your needs.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Higher quality for sure, and.
- 39:48Speaker 1: They've been around a long time, so they really know
- 39:50Speaker 1: what you might need. And they travel a lot in
- 39:52Speaker 1: those vans too, Like Alan and Johnny. Those guys really
- 39:55Speaker 1: travel a lot in these things, so they know what
- 39:57Speaker 1: works and what doesn't work, which I think is helpful.
- 40:00Speaker 1: All right, So number five on our list is going
- 40:03Speaker 1: to be smartphones and the apps that you put on them.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Matt mentioned Google Fi, which I think is a good edition.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Twenty a month in your phone.
- 40:13Speaker 1: It just works everywhere in the world.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Everywhere. Yeah, Like I mean, I don't think it works
- 40:18Speaker 2: in North Korea. Yeah, but the entirety of the Pan
- 40:21Speaker 2: American Highway, if that's your trip, it works. I've used
- 40:24Speaker 2: it all over Africa. It's it's a game changer. Anyways,
- 40:29Speaker 2: it is a game changer, just just the smartphone. Like
- 40:32Speaker 2: it's it's almost hard to imagine doing these trips without them, like.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Now hailing an Uber, opening up I Overlander, opening up Gaya,
- 40:41Speaker 1: opening up on X. It's just all right there.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I literally can't imagine a world without
- 40:47Speaker 2: Google Maps.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Sure.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I mean, I had my first iPhone when I was
- 40:49Speaker 2: in high school, right exactly.
- 40:52Speaker 1: I mean I had I had a phone that had
- 40:56Speaker 1: a separate like receive even transmitting box in the trunk
- 41:02Speaker 1: of my Honda a cord and then it had the
- 41:04Speaker 1: little handset with the curly wire. That was my first
- 41:08Speaker 1: cell phone. So we're about a we're about a generation off,
- 41:13Speaker 1: just about almost a generation off. So, but.
- 41:21Speaker 2: The amount of things, the amount of information that is
- 41:24Speaker 2: just at your fingertips as a traveler with a smartphone
- 41:26Speaker 2: these days, and all the apps that are out there
- 41:28Speaker 2: is just I mean, it's just crazy.
- 41:30Speaker 1: Yeah. And you can go onto Google find out some information.
- 41:35Speaker 1: You can go onto these communities on Facebook and ask
- 41:38Speaker 1: for help and questions. You know that you have you
- 41:41Speaker 1: basically have the Encyclopedia Britannica and a supercomputer and a flashlight.
- 41:48Speaker 2: And yeah, you can apply for your Yeah, that's right,
- 41:50Speaker 2: you can. You can find out if there's a protest
- 41:52Speaker 2: or this or that.
- 41:54Speaker 1: You can. I mean, like, yeah, several of my EVSs
- 41:57Speaker 1: were actually just in my wallet on my iPhone, you know,
- 42:00Speaker 1: like where you have like all your credit cards and
- 42:01Speaker 1: your plane tickets. He just clicked on it and you
- 42:04Speaker 1: opened it up and they scanned it at the border.
- 42:06Speaker 1: So it's the smartphones are ubiquitous and now a lot
- 42:09Speaker 1: of the driver's licenses are being available becoming available on
- 42:13Speaker 1: your phone. So the smartphone really is a game changer.
- 42:18Speaker 2: For travelers, right, like if you if you get pocketed,
- 42:21Speaker 2: that's right, like you know, or just I've forgotten my
- 42:24Speaker 2: wallet and steal phones anymore, because I mean they pretty
- 42:26Speaker 2: much brick themselves.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good question. I was told a couple
- 42:31Speaker 1: of times in my ROBI to be careful having my
- 42:34Speaker 1: iPhone out, which seems weird because you're right, like, you
- 42:38Speaker 1: can just brick the thing.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Yeah, Like so I don't I don't know if the
- 42:42Speaker 2: FBI can't get into it. I don't know if.
- 42:47Speaker 1: Yeah. And the nice thing is is if you're up
- 42:50Speaker 1: to date on all your iCloud and everything else like that,
- 42:52Speaker 1: you just go get a new phone. And you're off
- 42:54Speaker 1: to the races. And I like when I travel, I
- 42:56Speaker 1: always carry a burner phone. I don't actually keep my
- 42:59Speaker 1: iPhone out in my hand I use. I use just
- 43:02Speaker 1: a standard Samsung on a local simcard, So I tried
- 43:06Speaker 1: to do all of those things that way. If it
- 43:08Speaker 1: is stolen, I've not lost my primary kind of communicator.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I don't do that anymore. I mean,
- 43:15Speaker 2: you know, I have Verizon on my iPhone here and
- 43:18Speaker 2: it's ten bucks a day. Yeah, for the amount of
- 43:20Speaker 2: time that I am I am overseas, it's a worthwhile
- 43:25Speaker 2: trade off for that price. I previously had Google Fi,
- 43:30Speaker 2: which I actually like, I really enjoyed. I think, you know,
- 43:34Speaker 2: not to go back to Google Fi, but as a traveler,
- 43:37Speaker 2: it's just not having to go and spend the time.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Can you get Google Fi on your on an iPhone? Yeah, oh,
- 43:43Speaker 1: I didn't know.
- 43:43Speaker 2: It's not it's like they call it in beta. But
- 43:46Speaker 2: it totally works. You just have to change some settings.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Oh that's cool. I didn't know that.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't get service at my house. I
- 43:53Speaker 2: only get Verizon service. So it's just you know, a
- 43:56Speaker 2: reality of modern life.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Well, and and the reason why I have a burner
- 44:01Speaker 1: phone all the time. Is just it talks to the
- 44:04Speaker 1: evidence of the fact that this is a game changer,
- 44:06Speaker 1: because like me without a smartphone when I'm traveling is very,
- 44:09Speaker 1: very difficult. So like when I was, you know, detained
- 44:13Speaker 1: at the Djibusian border for three days, I had no data. Yeah,
- 44:17Speaker 1: I was only allowed to make phone because the in
- 44:20Speaker 1: Djibouti they do not give you data with your plan,
- 44:23Speaker 1: so you can make phone calls and you can send SMSs.
- 44:26Speaker 1: And it felt like I'd gone back to the Stone Age,
- 44:29Speaker 1: like trying to solve problems by only being able to
- 44:32Speaker 1: make phone calls as opposed to just sending emails and
- 44:35Speaker 1: checking this and researching that. We couldn't do any of that.
- 44:39Speaker 1: So it was a real lesson in the fact that
- 44:41Speaker 1: smartphones are are such a game changer, definitely. So all right,
- 44:47Speaker 1: so now we've got number four on our list.
- 44:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I Overland. Yeah, I mean.
- 44:52Speaker 1: It's so good and it's not for profit, and it's
- 44:54Speaker 1: like they're just the coolest people.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah. Like, there's definitely been companies that have come along
- 44:59Speaker 2: that have tried to of prophetize that model. I'm glaid
- 45:02Speaker 2: that I Overlander is just crushing it. It's such a
- 45:04Speaker 2: community resource. You know, it does have some issues. You know,
- 45:10Speaker 2: they've gotten a lot better, I think, at moderating things.
- 45:13Speaker 2: You know, some of the data can be a little
- 45:14Speaker 2: bit old, you know, some of it can be you know,
- 45:18Speaker 2: they're doing a better job of marketing like this this
- 45:20Speaker 2: place is permanently closed or whatever, but it's just by far. Again,
- 45:26Speaker 2: I go back to planning this pan Am trip, and
- 45:28Speaker 2: I have to be very very careful. We're going to
- 45:31Speaker 2: take the earth Roamer and some campsites I can't get into.
- 45:35Speaker 2: So like if you're if you're traveling even to the
- 45:37Speaker 2: level of an obscure vehicle, the community will say it's
- 45:40Speaker 2: big grig friendly or a no no know that not,
- 45:43Speaker 2: or that it has cell coverage at the at the campsite,
- 45:46Speaker 2: or they have laundry or Wi Fi or whatever, and
- 45:49Speaker 2: they'll even make people do a good job of making
- 45:52Speaker 2: comments and they do actively moderate it. So this is
- 45:55Speaker 2: actually something that I love about Ioverlander. I put in
- 45:58Speaker 2: a coffee shop somewhere or I think in Malawi or.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Something like that. Like I was so excited to have
- 46:05Speaker 1: found a coffee shop, and I didn't do like a
- 46:07Speaker 1: very good job of like a lot of detail because
- 46:09Speaker 1: I'm like, it's a coffee shop in this place, and
- 46:12Speaker 1: they just they came in and just like deleted my
- 46:14Speaker 1: entry and I loved it. I loved it it just
- 46:18Speaker 1: like I mean they knew. They also like reached out
- 46:21Speaker 1: to let me know that they did that because they
- 46:23Speaker 1: do know who we are and Overland Journal and everything.
- 46:25Speaker 1: They're like, hey, it just didn't meet our guidelines. And
- 46:27Speaker 1: I was like, thank you for doing that, thank you
- 46:29Speaker 1: for not like just because it's Overland Journal like that
- 46:32Speaker 1: my sucky contribution got to stay around. But he's like, no,
- 46:36Speaker 1: it's like it didn't. It didn't. If you go back
- 46:38Speaker 1: and you change this and you do that, then it
- 46:39Speaker 1: can stay. And I was like, that is awesome that
- 46:41Speaker 1: they kept those standards. So those that are listening that
- 46:44Speaker 1: use I Overlander, please remember that Ioverlander is a not
- 46:48Speaker 1: for profit and they do not charge you for any
- 46:52Speaker 1: of the services that you're getting access to. So the
- 46:54Speaker 1: only way that we keep Ioverlander around is to donate.
- 46:58Speaker 1: So if you've gone on a t and you've had
- 47:01Speaker 1: a good experience with ioverlander and it's mador trip better,
- 47:04Speaker 1: it's facilitated things or it's reduced your anxiety. We have
- 47:08Speaker 1: a responsibility, especially with a not for profit, to give back.
- 47:13Speaker 1: So give back what you're able to. You know, if
- 47:16Speaker 1: you're driving around in a man truck with a million
- 47:18Speaker 1: dollar vehicle, give more. You know, if you if you're
- 47:23Speaker 1: driving around and it's like it's the trip of a
- 47:25Speaker 1: lifetime and you script every penny, They're going to respect
- 47:27Speaker 1: the fact that maybe you only give them five bucks.
- 47:29Speaker 1: But like do give back and also give back by
- 47:34Speaker 1: providing information, updating information if it's wrong. Sometimes people's location
- 47:41Speaker 1: is off when they do the entry, so I've had
- 47:43Speaker 1: to make some corrections to locations. So I'm actively updating
- 47:47Speaker 1: information as I'm traveling. But i Overlander is an incredible tool,
- 47:50Speaker 1: and it's an organization that I just really respect.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I have no idea how I would plan this pan
- 47:55Speaker 2: Am trip without it.
- 47:57Speaker 1: It would be hard, genuinely, I mean you you would,
- 47:59Speaker 1: and people did, but it was just that much harder,
- 48:02Speaker 1: whereas now it's not that difficult.
- 48:04Speaker 2: It's actually kind of cool now, you know, for the
- 48:06Speaker 2: international stuff, you're getting the campgrounds and people that are
- 48:09Speaker 2: able to start businesses because of iyover That's right, because
- 48:13Speaker 2: like the listing carries that much kind of clout.
- 48:16Speaker 1: It really does. And here's another example. I Overlander is
- 48:20Speaker 1: an offline tool, so you don't get to play around
- 48:25Speaker 1: on the map so much because that requires a data connection.
- 48:27Speaker 1: But all of the information on the database is all
- 48:32Speaker 1: local on your phone. So again, when I was stuck
- 48:35Speaker 1: in that Djibouti border, I was able to open up Ieoverlander.
- 48:39Speaker 1: It had the WhatsApp number of this French foreign legionnaire
- 48:42Speaker 1: that had a campsite nearby the border, and I was
- 48:45Speaker 1: able to reach out to him saying we were going
- 48:47Speaker 1: to come. But then we got stuck at the border
- 48:49Speaker 1: and he reached back out on WhatsApp so it was
- 48:53Speaker 1: or reached back out on SMS, so we were able
- 48:55Speaker 1: to stay in communication and he actually came to the
- 48:58Speaker 1: border with food and I mean it brought me to
- 49:00Speaker 1: tiers actually, but like it was incredible. And that's because
- 49:03Speaker 1: Ioverlander is an offline tool, so if you lose data connection,
- 49:07Speaker 1: you still can find resources around you from the database. Yeah,
- 49:12Speaker 1: so yeah, I Overlander is really really good, man. Yeah,
- 49:15Speaker 1: make a donation for sure. All right. So now we've
- 49:17Speaker 1: got number three on the list, which is the garment
- 49:21Speaker 1: in Reach. There are other tools like a garment in reach,
- 49:24Speaker 1: but it's the best and there's really just no reason
- 49:28Speaker 1: to like mince words around it. There are other tools
- 49:31Speaker 1: at work. The reason why Garment is the best is
- 49:34Speaker 1: that their units are very very small. They're incredibly reliable.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Like their newest messenger looks like a little a battery charger,
- 49:42Speaker 1: So like when it's in your stuff and you're getting
- 49:45Speaker 1: checked at a border, they don't even they would never
- 49:47Speaker 1: know that it was anything but like a little charging brick.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Did you hear that? Bruce Scott to Oh yeah.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Yeah, h well he had it on his vest, like
- 49:54Speaker 1: on his vest.
- 49:55Speaker 2: And I mean like like here's the thing that's Yeah,
- 49:58Speaker 2: Like there are the people that use GUAR. I'm in
- 50:00Speaker 2: an eye reach and they're like you know, I mean
- 50:03Speaker 2: everybody has their own perspective, but like like you see
- 50:05Speaker 2: him in Sadona and they're on a trail where there's
- 50:07Speaker 2: like like eight million, here's eight million people and you
- 50:11Speaker 2: have five you're next to the five star hotel Enchantment
- 50:15Speaker 2: and and and they have this big Garment in Reach,
- 50:18Speaker 2: Like you don't just have it with you, right, Like
- 50:21Speaker 2: like if you're at the if you're at the visitors
- 50:23Speaker 2: Center for the Grand Canyon it.
- 50:27Speaker 1: But it is good. It is good to have it
- 50:29Speaker 1: on your person.
- 50:30Speaker 2: I always countries that you just can't have them. You
- 50:32Speaker 2: can't like India, no go, Yeah, don't go to the
- 50:35Speaker 2: Kashmir region with one of those.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Well, and I mean even Joe Fleming, you know from
- 50:40Speaker 1: Bona Fide, he got his confiscated in India, Bruce got
- 50:44Speaker 1: his confiscated. They're definitely a placeble, definitely placed.
- 50:47Speaker 2: To do what they're gonna do. But like I also
- 50:49Speaker 2: don't understand that. I meanwhile, you have an iPhone that
- 50:52Speaker 2: has a satellite texting now.
- 50:54Speaker 1: Yeah, but it doesn't work everywhere. Unfortunately, it only works
- 50:57Speaker 1: in North America right now. It's going to be coming
- 51:00Speaker 1: online in Australia soon. But the SOS feature, it's also
- 51:03Speaker 1: very limited. It's only emergency, whereas an in reach you
- 51:07Speaker 1: can say, hey, I need fuel or can you bring
- 51:10Speaker 1: out a spare tire so that way you're not having
- 51:12Speaker 1: to call in the cavalry. Yeah, and just because you have.
- 51:15Speaker 2: To have those like predetermined messages, like we have the
- 51:17Speaker 2: one that has the screen so I can actually text.
- 51:20Speaker 2: But previously when I had I'm like I actually like
- 51:23Speaker 2: I had you in there, and I had my dad
- 51:25Speaker 2: in there, and I'm like, you know, if if my
- 51:28Speaker 2: dad can't figure it out, you can figure it out. Yeah,
- 51:30Speaker 2: that's right, and you could have those things. It's I
- 51:33Speaker 2: think it's also for the people at home too.
- 51:36Speaker 1: I think that's where it really makes a huge difference.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Is it gives again confidence to travel. So for the traveler,
- 51:42Speaker 1: they have the confidence that if something goes wrong, they
- 51:44Speaker 1: can get help. And it also gives the family members
- 51:48Speaker 1: that are left behind the confidence to be able to
- 51:50Speaker 1: track you see that you're moving, that you're okay. You
- 51:53Speaker 1: can send them little daily updates of how your trip
- 51:56Speaker 1: is going. And it just makes everybody so much happier.
- 51:59Speaker 1: And it's fifty bucks a month on the Like Explorer
- 52:02Speaker 1: plan and that's unlimited. It's unlimited texting by satellite. Yeah,
- 52:06Speaker 1: and it uses the Iridium network, which is the most
- 52:09Speaker 1: reliable network with full global coverage including I mean I
- 52:13Speaker 1: have sent you know, inReach messages from the northern tip
- 52:17Speaker 1: of Greenland and I have sent inReach messages from the
- 52:20Speaker 1: entire you know, crossing of the continent of Antarctica with
- 52:23Speaker 1: no issues, with no issues, like it works every day,
- 52:27Speaker 1: always works. So the garment in reach, I think is
- 52:31Speaker 1: one of the most powerful tools again for giving confidence
- 52:34Speaker 1: to travelers to go. Yeah.
- 52:36Speaker 2: It makes it almost if you're if you're going properly remote. Yeah,
- 52:41Speaker 2: you just kind of have to have one.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, they have some that integrate with
- 52:45Speaker 1: the GPS units now and and like the little one
- 52:49Speaker 1: the messenger that I use, it doesn't even have an antenna.
- 52:52Speaker 1: It's this little black box and you can actually charge
- 52:55Speaker 1: your iPhone from it too. It has two way charging
- 52:58Speaker 1: so that it just keeps getting better and better. Really cool,
- 53:01Speaker 1: you know, really useful tool. All right, So now we're
- 53:04Speaker 1: down to number two on the list, which you would
- 53:07Speaker 1: you like? And I love my starlink man, It's just.
- 53:10Speaker 2: It's it is a game changer to use that term.
- 53:13Speaker 2: Yet again, I want to I want to start with
- 53:15Speaker 2: some of the negatives. You have to be judicious with
- 53:18Speaker 2: how you use starlink because I think, you know, let's say,
- 53:22Speaker 2: for the North American overlanding where you're you know, you're
- 53:24Speaker 2: you're doing remote camping. You want to get away. That's
- 53:31Speaker 2: part of the experience to me, So you have to
- 53:34Speaker 2: you know, I have mine on a switch and sometimes
- 53:38Speaker 2: I just turn it off like I'll notice I've said
- 53:41Speaker 2: this before, but I notice, you know, We'll be at
- 53:43Speaker 2: some beautiful campsite in Utah and there's nothing around, and
- 53:46Speaker 2: we're trying to get away and the starlink goes on.
- 53:49Speaker 2: I me and my wife stopped talking. Yeah, because because.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Then you're on Instagram looking at other people's trips while
- 53:55Speaker 1: you're on this amazing trip.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So. So starlink is a wonderful thing, but
- 54:00Speaker 2: you do have to you have to be disciplined to
- 54:02Speaker 2: be able to turn it off sometimes. But it has
- 54:05Speaker 2: enabled so many people, like we talk about, you know,
- 54:08Speaker 2: the vans and the van life, like it has enabled
- 54:11Speaker 2: so many people to to get out and explore and
- 54:14Speaker 2: to live a you know, you know, an exceptionally cool
- 54:19Speaker 2: life where before they could work remotely, they would be stuck,
- 54:23Speaker 2: you know, in Illinois, Like.
- 54:26Speaker 1: That was me in the Scout again, Like I work
- 54:29Speaker 1: four or five hours a day. Yeah, right in my
- 54:33Speaker 1: camper in a beautiful you know, campsite.
- 54:36Speaker 2: And it's transparent. Now it's so fast and nobody knows
- 54:39Speaker 2: that you're on it, Like I can, I can take
- 54:42Speaker 2: a call in the middle of nowhere. Yeah, you know,
- 54:45Speaker 2: for for our business and you have, you have no
- 54:48Speaker 2: idea where I am.
- 54:49Speaker 1: No idea and what I would do? You know, like
- 54:51Speaker 1: how people on a zoom call, they'll change they'll change
- 54:54Speaker 1: the background to be like some waterfall or whatever. Like
- 54:57Speaker 1: I had the waterfall in the background, so I would
- 55:00Speaker 1: I would actually change it to like an office scene,
- 55:02Speaker 1: just to not be that guy of like, oh yeah, hey,
- 55:05Speaker 1: I'm like, yeah, I'm at nine thousand feet with a
- 55:09Speaker 1: view out into Moab or whatever.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, maybe a social note the view from my
- 55:16Speaker 2: office today. Posts are really really annoying and everybody, even
- 55:21Speaker 2: if it's something that you regularly.
- 55:22Speaker 1: Do, right, that's right, Yeah, no, it's true. Yeah, Like,
- 55:27Speaker 1: don't be that guy. Yeah, we manage the SignalIn So
- 55:30Speaker 1: starlink is incredible. It's affordable, h it. You know, it
- 55:34Speaker 1: gives you the ability and even while you're driving, so
- 55:38Speaker 1: your navigator can be researching things or looking up a
- 55:41Speaker 1: place to go or a hiking trail or whatever, and
- 55:44Speaker 1: it's it is very seamless. There are countries where you
- 55:47Speaker 1: can't bring them in, so make sure that you know
- 55:49Speaker 1: what the local laws are. I did the unique componentry
- 55:53Speaker 1: modification on mind so it would mount on magnets, flat
- 55:57Speaker 1: on the top of the grenadier. But I was able
- 55:59Speaker 1: to use it in most of Southern Africa, but you
- 56:03Speaker 1: I couldn't bring it into Ethiopia, so I took it
- 56:06Speaker 1: home before I did that.
- 56:09Speaker 2: They can use some power if you don't do the twelve.
- 56:13Speaker 1: The twelve conversion, though.
- 56:14Speaker 2: As a company has a pretty good track record of
- 56:16Speaker 2: listening to how people actually use their products. I want
- 56:21Speaker 2: to say it's now the V three is completely flat,
- 56:24Speaker 2: a lot easier to mount. Right. As I said, I
- 56:27Speaker 2: have the high performances, which is which is big. But
- 56:30Speaker 2: that's the one that's like fully supported you know from
- 56:34Speaker 2: motion use, which works for us. There was no compromise.
- 56:39Speaker 2: We had so much space.
- 56:40Speaker 1: I'm shocked at. Like my starlink, I said it on
- 56:43Speaker 1: the on the bow of the sailboat and even then
- 56:46Speaker 1: like when the sailboat's rocking or whatever, it just works.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it totally works. It's incredible. You were saying that
- 56:53Speaker 2: with the unique componentry conversion, it's like two amps.
- 56:57Speaker 1: Yeah, about two amps, so it's about it's just a
- 57:00Speaker 1: little less than half of the draw because you're not
- 57:03Speaker 1: so in your vehicle. You're going from twelve volts up
- 57:06Speaker 1: to one twenty and then you're going from one twenty
- 57:08Speaker 1: back down to twelve volts inside. So there's all this
- 57:11Speaker 1: parasitic loss in the in the two different conversions. Yea,
- 57:15Speaker 1: and then you just don't have a lot of heat
- 57:18Speaker 1: waste and it just very goes right to twelve volts.
- 57:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so ours ends up. I would say on average
- 57:24Speaker 2: it's about eight to ten.
- 57:26Speaker 1: Well, you've got the higher performance.
- 57:28Speaker 2: Ye it's it's it's more significant. And we're running it
- 57:30Speaker 2: on one ten and we're using the you know, the
- 57:33Speaker 2: starlink rowdy. I don't know if that has any advantages.
- 57:37Speaker 1: You know, Yeah, the unique compronentary just puts all of
- 57:41Speaker 1: it into the unit. Cools works great. I'm super pleased
- 57:45Speaker 1: with it.
- 57:45Speaker 2: I also think that this technology, you know, Amazon is
- 57:49Speaker 2: actively releasing their competitor, you know, they're launching their satellites
- 57:54Speaker 2: and everything. I think it's what's going to be cool
- 57:56Speaker 2: are that these these satellite terminals are going to get
- 57:59Speaker 2: smaller and smaller and smaller.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Until they're in a cell phone.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, exactly. So Amazon has kind of targeted, you know,
- 58:06Speaker 2: a a hand portable unit. I want to say, they
- 58:09Speaker 2: even said it's going to be rechargeable and you know that.
- 58:12Speaker 1: And Starlink is working with T Mobile to make it
- 58:15Speaker 1: available in a cell phone. So these are these are
- 58:18Speaker 1: really really big movers around travel. I mean, imagine being
- 58:22Speaker 1: able to walk around with the power of starlink on
- 58:26Speaker 1: your hike, you know, if you need to get help.
- 58:29Speaker 2: I've even I've even noticed how it has affected where
- 58:33Speaker 2: people camp. Again. You know, I could keep going back
- 58:37Speaker 2: to the pandemic, but it was just such a so
- 58:39Speaker 2: many people went out in the woods, so to speak, whatever,
- 58:42Speaker 2: they went out in the woods near the cell tower.
- 58:45Speaker 2: So you started to see on ioblander, oh well this
- 58:49Speaker 2: had l you know, LTE, or this had five G
- 58:52Speaker 2: or whatever. And now people are actually more spread out.
- 58:55Speaker 2: They don't have to be it's better. Like there's a
- 58:57Speaker 2: spot in Wickenberg that I can think of that was
- 59:00Speaker 2: just basically a shanty town because there's a cell tower
- 59:02Speaker 2: there and now you drive through it the same time
- 59:04Speaker 2: a year and there's just there's lealty there because they
- 59:09Speaker 2: can just be elsewhere.
- 59:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, just it just enables so much. Starlink is
- 59:15Speaker 1: it's really powerful for those that can work a couple
- 59:19Speaker 1: of days a week remotely, or maybe they can work
- 59:21Speaker 1: full time remotely or for a couple months they could
- 59:24Speaker 1: make that transition. It just allows us to travel and work,
- 59:29Speaker 1: which of course the most optimal is just to go
- 59:31Speaker 1: travel and leave all that behind and don't even bring
- 59:33Speaker 1: a cell phone. But yeah, that's not the reality for
- 59:36Speaker 1: most people.
- 59:37Speaker 2: So the only way that you could do that, you know,
- 59:39Speaker 2: the only way that you could not be in a
- 59:42Speaker 2: way independently wealthy or be entirely drawn from your savings before.
- 59:47Speaker 2: Now you can have a job.
- 59:49Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right now, and I think it's important for
- 59:51Speaker 1: a lot of people. Gives them that again, that confidence.
- 59:53Speaker 2: And this allows more people to do it, that's right,
- 59:56Speaker 2: you know.
- 59:56Speaker 1: And if you are traveling and you want to call
- 59:58Speaker 1: your kids and some good night, you know, you're doing
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: it on a video call. Now you're seeing their face,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: they're seeing your face. You get to show them where
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: you're camped out. And it just allows people to remain
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: connected in ways that we weren't able to do before. Definitely,
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: So yeah, starlink is really powerful tool. All right. So
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: now we're down to number one of the most significant
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: game changers in overlanding. So you came up, you came
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: up with this one, and I think you're right.
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: I think you're right, it's factory overland vehicles. Yeah, you know,
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: I think I really think that GM is leading the
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: charge with this as is anios. You know, AV being
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: kind of a quasi manufacturer. I mean, now they're working
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: with GM and that's right on a lot of vehicles.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: But you know, it used to be that, you know,
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: you had a very small pool of vehicles. You know,
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: it used to be like the eighty series and the
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: one hundred series. You know, then you start and there
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: was the quirky guy who would do it and Discovery
- 1:01:00Speaker 2: or whatever like that. But yeah, but you had to
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: spend a lot of money to convert these vehicles to
- 1:01:07Speaker 2: make them appropriate. I remember my first Discovery. I remember
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: spending my my high school graduation money that you know,
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: like your family gives you some money or not my parents,
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: but you know, you have a party or whatever on
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: an old man EMU lift from from John Lee at
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: Exhibition Exchange and two thirty five eighty five sixteen tires,
- 1:01:28Speaker 2: and I was like the man. I was the man.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Like I had the man.
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: I had nearly thirty two inch tires and I couldn't
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: imagine anything else that I would need. Now I can
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: buy a Jeep wrangler around thirty five from the factory,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: I can buy a you know, a mid size pickup
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: truck with you know, down stampers.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: Multimatis spend thirty five inch front and rear lockers. Yeah, unbelievable,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: and took GM's credit. They didn't try to reinvent the wheel.
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: They said, who is the most most effective partner in
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: making a factory the best factory overland vehicle? Contacted AEV
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: who knows how to build the best overland vehicles. And
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: then you end up with something that works so well
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: and is really desirable, like it looks good, it functions well,
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: and it has a warranty and it's all rolled up
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: into your payment.
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, And here's the thing too. I've
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: said this before, but I've made the mistake of not
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: doing these kind of factory trucks. And granted, sometimes building
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: something it's just fun.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: Yeah I'm over it.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: But it's one hundred and seventy five dollars an hour
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: now if you're not doing all of the work yourself,
- 1:02:38Speaker 2: and the parts are really expensive, and then you're paying
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: for the tires twice, and you're pain for the bumpers
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: twice and you're paying for the suspension twice because you're
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: just throwing that stuff away.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: That's right.
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: It has minimal value.
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: It takes more of your time than it's worth.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: Yeah, So the ability to get that ZR two Bison
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: or the you know the what's is it the AT
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: four x yeah hundred bison, Yeah, like all that the
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: crazy you know from the factor.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: With huge payload and everything else, Like you.
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: Could literally just put the camper in it and go.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: Or another great example is the new Lexus g X five.
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Fifty the overtrail and everything.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: It's amazing and the overtail trail plus it's like big tires,
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: locker you know, long travel like yeah, and really you know,
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: space of fission interior.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Where people miss the point of all of this is
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: that it is factory engineered and they're very very capable,
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: you know.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: But all the durability testing, the anti corrosion, all the
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: safety stuff work, all.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: These principles of overlining that we've been talking about for
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: a very long time are now just available from the factory.
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: You're not having to look to the aftermarket, you know.
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: But the big mistake that people make is they say, oh,
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: it's got thirty fives, I've got to put thirty sevens
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: on it, or or like you know, it's got thirty
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: sevens on it, so I've got to put forties or
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: this that or whatever. You know, Just don't listen to
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: those idiots on the internet. These vehicles are so capable
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: you will, like, you know, I just I just spent
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: some time with the Defender one thirty outbound, and that's
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: I'm not going to call that a factory Overlander, but
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: I guess it's as closed.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: As the equivalent gets for land Rover.
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: You know, that vehicle doesn't have aggressive tires, it doesn't
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: have any lift, it doesn't you know, it's it's kind
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: of tahoe sized. And the things that I was able
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: to do with that vehicle shocking, are shocking things that
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: you would never like. You're you are doing sport four
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: wheel driving, and that vehicle is on the the you know,
- 1:04:47Speaker 2: the the less capable end of what a lot of
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: these vehicles can do now.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: But still you push a button, it lifts itself two
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: and a half inches in the air. You can get
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: a factory winch on it. It has like an eighteen
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: hundred nineteen hundred pound payload.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: Even even looking at like a stock Wrangler Rubicon. Now,
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: the things that you can do with those completely stock
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: exceed the capability of ninety nine percent of drivers.
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: And probably the ultimate example of what we're talking about
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: is the Grenadier. I mean is it is a an
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: entire car company that is made that it was started
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: to build overland vehicles and they're crushing it, like they
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: are selling them like hotcakes in North America and around
- 1:05:30Speaker 1: the world.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: And you don't need to do anything. Well people are
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: you know, it's.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: Like, oh they look and they look good. I mean
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: like if you see one a on a like a
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: narrow thirty five, it's like, oh, that looks really really good.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: So like I would be tempted to put a slightly
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: taller tire on there, but like that was the reason
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: why we didn't mess with it when we did Africa.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: We wanted to show that like out of the box,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: you just go drive across the continent and it was fine. Yeah,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: like literally not a single failure.
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: Yeah. I go back to the first car I built,
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: the Discovery one, and having I specifically remember they were
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: thirty one point eight inch tilter and recreational four wheel.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Drive, which is which is also super fun, but it's
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: a version of sport and there's times that you need
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: forties to do this for sure, whatever that trail is.
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: But I think the one thing that KAI come back
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: to on the factory Overlanders is if your goal is
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: to travel and you have the resources, you can go
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: buy a vehicle from the lot and do max warranty
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: on it and go drive it around the world for
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: the next however many years and you bring it back
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: and nothing has changed other than you probably had to
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: change out the tires at some point because they wore out.
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: But it's ready to go. And we talked about these
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: lightweight campers, So imagine like again the like the at
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: four x AEV from from GM from GMC, and you
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: put a go fast on the top of it and
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: you leave. Yeah, they just like you just go.
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: You know, there's a value to the time as well.
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: And you're not traveling when you're building your vehicle. You're
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: not able to spend money on travel when you're spending
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: money on accessories. So maybe just really like you said,
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: needs versus wants, if you if you if you need
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: to travel, if it's part of you and you and
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: you desire that, remove all the points of friction that
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: you can to getting out there and having those experiences.
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: I mean, the cool thing is that if you decided
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: right now you wanted to leave next week to drive
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: to Yeshuaia, yeah you could. You could actually do it
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: or before it took And this is maybe the summary
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: of all of this, the true game change ten ten
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: years ago. You would have had to buy a vehicle.
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: You would have had to have found one of the
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: two or three shops in the country that could outfit it.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: You'd have to track down all these components, buy all
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: these components, you know, build a camper or find the
- 1:07:55Speaker 2: roof tent, find all of these components. It would you'd
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: have to You'd have to figure out the visas. You
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: have to figure out how you're going to communicate, You
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: have to figure out where you're going to camp. You
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: can i would say, within a week if you were
- 1:08:08Speaker 2: If you were determined and you just could write checks,
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: you could go to pretty much any Chevy dealer, get
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: a grenadier or whatever, buy a scout camper, throw a
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: roof rack on the grenadeer with a roof tent.
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and just go. You know, you just leave.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: You just leave because you can now do these things
- 1:08:29Speaker 2: while you're going, Like it's so much less planning. Yeah,
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: And I just think that like those factory overland vehicles like.
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Yeah, like if you're living in New York City, you
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: like swing By OK four drive or Mainline overland and
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: they put in a they put an Alu cab camper
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: or on the top of your grenadier and then you
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: just keep going and you're done.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: You just with the rest of the stuff on Amazon Prime.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: It can be it can be sitting at your next
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: camp site for the things that you really find that
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: you're doing without.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: And I think that that's cool. Obviously doing that's not cheap.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: You know, you can you can do these trips on
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: any kind of budget.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: You know, it is surprising to me. I always like
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: to bring it back, like you know, we always advocate
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: you don't need the stuff, and yeah, we're kind of
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: talking about buying all the stuff. You know, you can
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: do this in a well. I was gonna say it's
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: twenty five hundred dollars old for Runner, but I don't
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: know if that exists anymore.
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: Probably probably not. But think about it that those that
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: at four x AEV in two or three years is
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: going to be much more affordable. Yeah, and it's going
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: to have fairly low miles. It'll still be under warranty
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: because they have a sixty thousand mile warranty on them.
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: So yeah, and then you still go yeah.
- 1:09:40Speaker 2: And exactly, and think about all the turnkey trucks that
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: have been built. Now, like you just see this stuff
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: on Facebook Marketplace now, you know, like I'm seeing at
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: campers and GFC is on Facebook Marketplace, Like I did
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: not think that we were going to be there.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Yeah we are, you know, Yeah, we're definitely there. So
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: so many game changers and and for those that are listening,
