- 0:13Speaker 1: It's a podcast called twenty five Whistles twenty wine.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Let's get right to it.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Yes, this is twenty five Whistles, presented by Draft Kings
- 0:26Speaker 3: sports book and official sports betting partner of college football.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Download the DraftKings app you used to code Bobby's sports
- 0:31Speaker 3: and get in on the action. We got a good
- 0:33Speaker 3: one coming up. Head football coach of the Vanderbilt Commodoores,
- 0:37Speaker 3: former defensive coordinator for Notre Dame Clark Lee. We talked
- 0:41Speaker 3: about the pressure he's constantly under. I was straight up like, a, so,
- 0:44Speaker 3: is it harder to get in here so you can't
- 0:46Speaker 3: get as many good players?
- 0:48Speaker 4: What a great question, because Vanderbilt is hard to get
- 0:50Speaker 4: into a lot of smart kids there.
- 0:52Speaker 5: Anyway, you didn't go there.
- 0:53Speaker 4: I never even thought about going there. It's like because
- 0:56Speaker 4: you weren't smart enough to think it. Or yeah to me,
- 0:58Speaker 4: it's like the Harvard, it's the Yalees and kid Anderbilt.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I never yeah, yeah, for sure, it's like an IVY
- 1:04Speaker 3: League school in the South.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, not for me. I think my favorite question was
- 1:07Speaker 2: do you ever just look at the mirror be like
- 1:08Speaker 2: I can't believe I'm here. That's a good one by me.
- 1:11Speaker 3: So we'll talk to Clark Lee coming up, and then
- 1:14Speaker 3: three players on the football team who joined US. Aj
- 1:16Speaker 3: Swan quarterback linebacker C. J. Taylor joined us for a
- 1:21Speaker 3: little bit punter it is.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It's fun.
- 1:24Speaker 3: We went over there when we made a show up
- 1:25Speaker 3: too much access as well, And I've hurt myself, but
- 1:28Speaker 3: every episode hurt myself.
- 1:29Speaker 2: You hurt yourself really for real? This time? Well, I
- 1:32Speaker 2: didn't injure myself or hurt myself.
- 1:33Speaker 4: Yeah, me too, my leg, But I right, I wiped out.
- 1:38Speaker 3: You did.
- 1:40Speaker 2: I thought you were joking, but you weren't. No, I
- 1:42Speaker 2: wiped out. It sucked.
- 1:44Speaker 3: Okay, let's go over and get in the tittle tattle.
- 1:50Speaker 6: The tattle, all right.
- 1:55Speaker 7: The other day we were talking about athletes changing their
- 1:57Speaker 7: last name. So if you could change your last name
- 2:00Speaker 7: something unique, different, what would it be.
- 2:02Speaker 3: I'm a little bit obsessed with the name from Rob
- 2:06Speaker 3: Deerdeck's Fantasy Factory, and he does ridiculously too. But her
- 2:10Speaker 3: name is Chanelle West Coast. I don't even know much
- 2:12Speaker 3: about her. I just think that name is so funny.
- 2:14Speaker 3: That's pretty cool because their real name is like Charlie
- 2:18Speaker 3: or Charlotte or something, but and their last name is
- 2:21Speaker 3: a real normal name. I looked her up, but it's
- 2:23Speaker 3: Chanelle West Coast. So I think I'd be like Bobby Southeast.
- 2:30Speaker 3: But but you already have a cool name, like you
- 2:32Speaker 3: already have the question. The question was change her name.
- 2:35Speaker 5: Yeah, it can't be boned, I know that, but come on,
- 2:37Speaker 5: go along.
- 2:38Speaker 2: I'll be Bobby Southeast.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Bobby Southeast, okay, yeah, or Bobby uh Bobby are Yeah,
- 2:43Speaker 3: they're like Bobby Arkansas something, Bobby Arkansas redneck right there?
- 2:47Speaker 6: I love that.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Oh, Jersey, I guess spaghetti Eddie spaghetti, right, I mean
- 2:53Speaker 4: that that would just makes sense.
- 2:55Speaker 5: Like a cartoon.
- 2:57Speaker 6: You I don't know.
- 2:59Speaker 5: Now, you got me thinking regionally California Kevin.
- 3:01Speaker 6: No, you don't have to do that.
- 3:02Speaker 2: You can pick whatever you want a last name, not
- 3:04Speaker 2: a first name.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Kevin from California.
- 3:07Speaker 2: There you go. No, you don't know from California would be.
- 3:13Speaker 3: You're talking with a bunch of guys too, who have
- 3:14Speaker 3: fake names, like bones is my real last name, and
- 3:18Speaker 3: you don't even really go by your real last name,
- 3:19Speaker 3: although it does get brought up sometimes it's there, Mike
- 3:22Speaker 3: deep as.
- 3:22Speaker 2: A whole different last name. It's not Destro kickoff is
- 3:26Speaker 2: not name.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah yeah yeah, could be though, yeah yeah, So I'm
- 3:30Speaker 3: going Bobby Southeast.
- 3:33Speaker 7: What else Notre Dame and Navy are kicking off in
- 3:36Speaker 7: Ireland this weekend. If you can watch Arkansas playing any
- 3:39Speaker 7: other international country, where would it be?
- 3:44Speaker 6: Well?
- 3:44Speaker 2: Would you want to see them in another country? That
- 3:46Speaker 2: wasn't the question.
- 3:48Speaker 6: It was no.
- 3:49Speaker 2: I'm saying that's probably why it's tough to think.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I wouldn't want to, But I would just go like
- 3:53Speaker 3: full culture shock and go Japan.
- 3:56Speaker 8: Wow.
- 3:56Speaker 2: They would be like, what is happening?
- 3:58Speaker 4: Oh my god, I'm just picturing redneck your stepdad in Japan.
- 4:02Speaker 2: And camouflage what the yeah? And all the different kind
- 4:06Speaker 2: of kit cats they have over there. They have a
- 4:08Speaker 2: lot of flavors. This is a green tea kit cat.
- 4:10Speaker 9: Yeah?
- 4:11Speaker 2: What on earth? How long they had these over here
- 4:14Speaker 2: in America?
- 4:14Speaker 5: We need to get them shipped back over there.
- 4:17Speaker 3: I was talking to one of my buddies about a
- 4:19Speaker 3: golf line and I thought it would be funny to do.
- 4:23Speaker 3: There were two versions of it and He had these
- 4:25Speaker 3: ideas as well, like a Hunter's Orange golf line for
- 4:29Speaker 3: hunters who also play golf, but most of stuff's like
- 4:32Speaker 3: Hunter's Orange's actually not bad. I've never seen Hunters Orange golf.
- 4:35Speaker 3: And the other one was and he said, what about
- 4:37Speaker 3: a for people who smoke a lot of weed, like
- 4:41Speaker 3: a what like a may I wanna golf line? I
- 4:43Speaker 3: was like, yeah, I would call it four twenty hilarious.
- 4:47Speaker 10: Nice.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I don't know if those exists, and so usually about
- 4:49Speaker 4: leaves all over what marijuana leaves.
- 4:52Speaker 3: It can be whatever, okay, but I would call but
- 4:55Speaker 3: four fri four.
- 4:58Speaker 2: The brand would be four twenty nice.
- 5:00Speaker 4: You know how some shirts have like little patterns of
- 5:02Speaker 4: things you look closely and it's on martini drink or
- 5:04Speaker 4: something a lot of that.
- 5:05Speaker 2: It would be like a.
- 5:06Speaker 3: It could be a weed leaf, it could be Bob
- 5:09Speaker 3: mar whatever, but it would be like that, like cam
- 5:12Speaker 3: like Hunter Orange. I don't know what I would call
- 5:16Speaker 3: that one yet, but four twenty can't be immediate. I
- 5:19Speaker 3: was like, four twenty twenty. I don't even smoke weed.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I've never smoked weed.
- 5:23Speaker 4: But hundred orange though, would be cool with like a
- 5:26Speaker 4: shoot because you know, you shoot a score and you
- 5:29Speaker 4: shoot when you hunt. There's something there with shoot, like
- 5:34Speaker 4: shoot under part you know what I mean.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Shooting under shooting. Oh, let's think there's something there with shoot.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Let's think about this. We come out with our own
- 5:42Speaker 3: twenty five whistles golf line. We steal this whole idea. Well,
- 5:47Speaker 3: I mean no, I was part of the creation of
- 5:48Speaker 3: the idea. Yeah, but whoever your buddy was you were
- 5:50Speaker 3: talking to, they're out. If we come up with the name,
- 5:53Speaker 3: they're out. You're sorry.
- 5:56Speaker 10: Man.
- 5:56Speaker 4: We came up with shoot under parks Man, shooting, shoot
- 5:59Speaker 4: under seven.
- 6:01Speaker 11: S, fire god, antler, dear morns.
- 6:06Speaker 3: We're looking for the between golf and rifle and hunting.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Driver sticks, driver, fans, grip it. Do your stand tree stand?
- 6:17Speaker 2: Uh, pistol morning bullseye early morning?
- 6:21Speaker 3: Do you yeah, dear Corn, we'll come back to Okay.
- 6:25Speaker 2: I like that.
- 6:26Speaker 7: Your next question, Okay, after being named the start of
- 6:29Speaker 7: this week, what is your over under on Baker Mayfield
- 6:31Speaker 7: starting games this year?
- 6:32Speaker 4: Oh, here we go, unrealistic, go ahead on all the games,
- 6:35Speaker 4: exactly every game. This is a pro Baker Mayfield podcast,
- 6:40Speaker 4: a massive Baker Mayfield fan. Let's go Baker Mayfield. Let's
- 6:43Speaker 4: start them all.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Let's win. It's plain championships. What I say?
- 6:47Speaker 5: Eddie won the first four games?
- 6:48Speaker 2: He's filling it?
- 6:49Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 6:49Speaker 2: Please who they're.
- 6:50Speaker 5: Playing at the Vikings versus the Bears?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Loss? When?
- 6:53Speaker 5: When versus the Eagles?
- 6:54Speaker 2: When at the Saints when? Oh, I have lost? When
- 6:58Speaker 2: lost loss?
- 6:59Speaker 3: You have Vikings loss, Bears win, yep, but you have
- 7:02Speaker 3: them losing against.
- 7:04Speaker 2: The Eagles and the Saints. Yeah.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Man, be careful with the Saints. Car you got Derek
- 7:08Speaker 4: Carr there? You said Instagram? How ripped he is? He
- 7:12Speaker 4: had sleeveless shirt and if he had a helmet on. Okay,
- 7:15Speaker 4: I haven't seen that, but did you see the Kyler
- 7:17Speaker 4: Murray one where he's wearing it looks like a spra.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Belly sticking out.
- 7:23Speaker 5: The longest yard.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I'm going sixteen games, not only not sevente because they
- 7:29Speaker 3: probably got hurt one game. Everybody misses a game. Be
- 7:32Speaker 3: realistic and the Bucks win ten?
- 7:35Speaker 5: Wow?
- 7:36Speaker 2: This is pro Baker Mayfall podcast. I heard that. I
- 7:38Speaker 2: heard that?
- 7:39Speaker 9: All right?
- 7:40Speaker 6: What else? Last one?
- 7:41Speaker 7: The Commanders ended the Ravens NFL record preseason winter get
- 7:44Speaker 7: twenty four games the other night. Is it the most
- 7:47Speaker 7: pointless win streak of all time are one of the
- 7:49Speaker 7: most impressive.
- 7:49Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you this. They played that game hard.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Both those teams play that game so hard. It was
- 7:53Speaker 3: actually a preseason game. Everybody wasn't playing, but it looked
- 7:58Speaker 3: like it mattered they were.
- 8:00Speaker 2: It was awesome.
- 8:01Speaker 3: It's not pointless because even if you do something pointless,
- 8:03Speaker 3: you can't do it twenty four times in a row.
- 8:05Speaker 3: It was like last year when I went on like
- 8:07Speaker 3: a twelve or thirteen week winning streak. I could never
- 8:09Speaker 3: do that again. Everything just worked out in the right
- 8:12Speaker 3: way and I got very lucky. Same thing with the
- 8:14Speaker 3: preseason games. It's not pointless. I think it's pretty cool,
- 8:20Speaker 3: but there's we talked about it. We've talked about three years,
- 8:24Speaker 3: four years, so there's something to it. Like it's fun,
- 8:26Speaker 3: but I'm not gonna say pointless.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Good for them.
- 8:28Speaker 3: I looked up some of the other streaks, longest streaks
- 8:31Speaker 3: Patriots twenty one game win streak in the early twenties.
- 8:34Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 8:35Speaker 5: Yeah, it was awesome.
- 8:36Speaker 2: That's a lot. Remember that.
- 8:37Speaker 3: And that's winning the Super Bowl. Yeah, like it's leading
- 8:40Speaker 3: up at super Bowl, winning super Bowl, and then all over
- 8:42Speaker 3: the next season. UCLA basketball won seven straight titles. I'm
- 8:45Speaker 3: convinced that they were the only ones that had a
- 8:47Speaker 3: goal all the other teams that had come to like
- 8:50Speaker 3: their house to play. Yeah, when was that? It was
- 8:52Speaker 3: John Wooden, you know leu al Sender before Crease. Yeahpaream Oakland.
- 8:57Speaker 3: But football won forty seven straight games.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Think about that.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Insane.
- 9:02Speaker 4: That's four seasons. That's pressure. After twenty every game is like,
- 9:06Speaker 4: oh my goodness.
- 9:07Speaker 3: The Lakers thirty three game regular season win streak, which
- 9:10Speaker 3: is pretty crazy.
- 9:11Speaker 2: So there you go.
- 9:12Speaker 4: You know, though, the pre back to preseason though, like
- 9:14Speaker 4: I did, I really thought that most teams go into
- 9:17Speaker 4: preseason being like, we're just gonna work stuff out, We're
- 9:19Speaker 4: not really trying to win this game. But after watching
- 9:21Speaker 4: a little bit of hard hard knocks like I and
- 9:23Speaker 4: not just this hard Knocks, every hard knocks, you really
- 9:26Speaker 4: do see that they care about winning that game.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Yeah, you see that they want their schemes to be successful.
- 9:32Speaker 3: And how are they successful by producing yards and points?
- 9:35Speaker 3: And if you produce yards and points.
- 9:36Speaker 2: You're gonna win.
- 9:37Speaker 3: You're gonna have a shot, you're gonna want to win this. Yeah,
- 9:39Speaker 3: and then you're also just a competitor. You don't get
- 9:42Speaker 3: to that stage if you're coaching or playing without being
- 9:45Speaker 3: really competitive, so you never want to lose anything.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't want to lose anything. Ever.
- 9:49Speaker 3: I do only rip my eyeballs out sometimes instead of lose,
- 9:53Speaker 3: even stupid stuff I feel like I hate, oh yeah,
- 9:56Speaker 3: I hate it. So but yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, all right,
- 9:58Speaker 3: that's it.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Thank you name.
- 10:00Speaker 8: Then I hesitate to tell you guys this what had
- 10:12Speaker 8: it came to me in a dream?
- 10:14Speaker 2: Let me tell you what's happening here.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I just reminded of the DraftKings sports Book that there
- 10:19Speaker 3: are people twenty five whistles presented by DraftKings sports Book
- 10:23Speaker 3: and official sports betting partner of college Football download the
- 10:26Speaker 3: DraftKings app used to God Bobby Sports and get in
- 10:28Speaker 3: on the action. So we do the parlay here every week. Yeah,
- 10:33Speaker 3: and I think probably what happened was we'd spent so
- 10:38Speaker 3: much time at Vanderbilt. I dreamt about it that night
- 10:41Speaker 3: after we left Vanderbilt Hawaii. Yes, I dreamt where somebody
- 10:46Speaker 3: came in my dream and told me who to bet. Okay,
- 10:50Speaker 3: and they said take Vanderbilt minus seventeen and a half.
- 10:54Speaker 3: But all I know is that going up into that
- 10:56Speaker 3: I was like I'm not taking Vanderbilt minus seventeen. That's
- 10:58Speaker 3: just a lot of points, just straight up, just a
- 11:00Speaker 3: lot of points for two teams that people don't really
- 11:05Speaker 3: have a handle on.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:08Speaker 3: So I wasn't gonna even bet the game, but in
- 11:11Speaker 3: my dream, some guy in a hat said, bet Vanderbilt
- 11:14Speaker 3: minus seventeen and a half.
- 11:15Speaker 2: You can't argue with dreams, man.
- 11:18Speaker 7: You know what I think about with this, the sand
- 11:20Speaker 7: lot when Benny has a dream, baby Ruth comes into
- 11:24Speaker 7: his room.
- 11:25Speaker 5: He got to get that ball.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Wow.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought about that in a while.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Okay, Vanderbilt minus seventeen and a half and Notre Dame
- 11:33Speaker 3: minus twenty one?
- 11:34Speaker 2: Is this going to be a thing? Those are my parlays.
- 11:36Speaker 2: What dreams?
- 11:36Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I never had something come to me to dream and
- 11:38Speaker 2: tell me to about a game. No, man, I think
- 11:40Speaker 2: happened the Vanderbilt.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Yeah, which, by the way, I'm super happy that we
- 11:49Speaker 3: have football again.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. I'm just so excited, even if it's
- 11:52Speaker 2: weak zero as they call it. Let me get on DraftKings.
- 11:57Speaker 2: You said Notre Dame and Navy or where Ireland Dublin?
- 12:01Speaker 3: I'm going Notre Dame minus twenty one. That my official
- 12:04Speaker 3: paray is gonna be Notre Dame minus twenty one Vanderbilt
- 12:07Speaker 3: minus seventeen and a half. Okay, so let me get
- 12:09Speaker 3: my verification in here at DraftKings.
- 12:12Speaker 5: Kicking up the season with some blowouts.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm good on that.
- 12:17Speaker 3: I'm good on blowouts in early football in early NCAA tournament,
- 12:21Speaker 3: first couple of rounds.
- 12:23Speaker 2: All right, let's go over to where's college football?
- 12:30Speaker 9: Here?
- 12:30Speaker 2: It is college football. You're like past women's soccer, volleyball, badminton. Hey,
- 12:39Speaker 2: I can do money lines, right, Mike, yep? Okay, all right,
- 12:46Speaker 2: I gotta put some money on my account.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I was gonna ask you that, what's in the
- 12:48Speaker 4: kiddie Nothing. I took it all out.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I took a bunch of it out and then lost
- 12:52Speaker 2: the rest of it in golf this week. Yeah.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So I'm doing Vanderbilt minus seventeen and a half five
- 13:01Speaker 3: hundred bucks. Okay, okay, And now I'm gonna win this
- 13:06Speaker 3: money because of a dream.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And if this works, come on, dreams, keep on coming,
- 13:13Speaker 2: swee dreams.
- 13:16Speaker 3: So that and then in my parlay, you got that, mic,
- 13:18Speaker 3: I got it all right. If you want to take
- 13:19Speaker 3: the twenty five Whistles Parlay. You can check out Draft

- 13:35Speaker 3: Full the tills and now now no We get into
- 13:39Speaker 3: an interview with head coach Clark Lee. Some notes on
- 13:42Speaker 3: coach Lee former defensive coordinatorrom Notre Dame from twenty eighteen
- 13:45Speaker 3: twenty twenty where he helped them get to the College
- 13:47Speaker 3: Football Playoff. He was a walk on Vanderbilt as a
- 13:49Speaker 3: player before earning a scholarship as a full back. He
- 13:51Speaker 3: was a big baseball player and walked on as a fullback.
- 13:54Speaker 3: He helped get the program their first SEC wins is
- 13:56Speaker 3: twenty nineteen last year when they stunned They then ranked
- 13:59Speaker 3: number twenty four Kentucks and then beat Florida the following
- 14:01Speaker 3: week and in my dream, I was told bet on them.
- 14:05Speaker 3: You can follow coach Lee on Twitter at coach. Underscorely
- 14:08Speaker 3: here he is coach Lee coach. What meeting did you
- 14:11Speaker 3: come from?
- 14:11Speaker 6: Right now?
- 14:12Speaker 9: I was just honestly in my by myself planning mode.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Oh, they actually like you run some big important medium
- 14:18Speaker 3: in like fifty people, and that you were delivering basically
- 14:21Speaker 3: a sermon on leadership.
- 14:23Speaker 9: I was encouraging myself, leading myself.
- 14:26Speaker 6: Sometimes that's the hardest.
- 14:27Speaker 9: Yeah, that's right, that's exactly right.
- 14:29Speaker 6: As the season, I mean, you guys are playing this weekend.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Yeah, so you've spent the last few weeks, a couple
- 14:34Speaker 3: of months getting ready for the season, but now it's
- 14:37Speaker 3: week one.
- 14:37Speaker 6: Are you into game prep mode with the team now?
- 14:40Speaker 3: Or is it still we're still figuring out who we are,
- 14:43Speaker 3: the identity of our team going into the season.
- 14:45Speaker 9: No, that's I mean, not that that's perfect, but that's
- 14:48Speaker 9: been set. We started Friday with Hawaii prep, so this
- 14:53Speaker 9: today was totally dedicated to them. I mean, there always
- 14:56Speaker 9: will be aspects of us playing good on good in
- 14:59Speaker 9: practice to keep speed up and you know, just give
- 15:03Speaker 9: guys a chance to continue to compete for the roles
- 15:04Speaker 9: they want. But we're we're in the swing of the
- 15:08Speaker 9: season off good.
- 15:09Speaker 3: On good feels dangerous because if you play too good
- 15:12Speaker 3: on good, somebody can get hurt pretty easily. But be right,
- 15:15Speaker 3: there's there's like a fine line you have to walk
- 15:16Speaker 3: because you want your guys to feel the speed of
- 15:18Speaker 3: the game as close as possible, but not get hurt.
- 15:21Speaker 6: How do you walk that line?
- 15:22Speaker 9: Well, it's it's you have to have a feel for it.
- 15:24Speaker 9: I mean, I you know, I think for us right now,
- 15:25Speaker 9: we're still establishing a program, so we can't be afraid
- 15:30Speaker 9: to play football, you know, And that doesn't mean we're
- 15:32Speaker 9: going live, but it means that we're willing to go
- 15:34Speaker 9: out there and put our best on our best and
- 15:37Speaker 9: allow for iron to sharpen iron. I mean that's an
- 15:39Speaker 9: important part of our growth. Now. The cool thing for
- 15:42Speaker 9: us is in year three we have more depth and
- 15:45Speaker 9: so we're going to get better looks out of our
- 15:48Speaker 9: scout teams. And you know, sometimes good on good doesn't
- 15:52Speaker 9: doesn't always include the ones versus the ones. Right, you
- 15:55Speaker 9: have the ability to mix a match, and the better
- 15:58Speaker 9: your depth, the more quality the play is on the
- 15:59Speaker 9: field or who's out there.
- 16:01Speaker 6: Is the defensive line the hardest place to get quality depth?
- 16:04Speaker 9: Oh yeah, I mean it's it's a Yes, that's a
- 16:08Speaker 9: tough place for sure. I think you know, we've also
- 16:11Speaker 9: fall to build depth at corner. I think that's a
- 16:14Speaker 9: position that has, like, you know, very particular traits that
- 16:17Speaker 9: you're looking for. And then I would say the O
- 16:21Speaker 9: line also, I mean it's you know, it's one thing
- 16:22Speaker 9: to go out and get big bodies. It's another thing
- 16:25Speaker 9: to get refined players that occupy those big bodies, right,
- 16:28Speaker 9: So sometimes those guys need another year to kind of
- 16:32Speaker 9: incubate and you know, take ownership over those big frames,
- 16:37Speaker 9: and so it's a little bit slower process there. You know.
- 16:40Speaker 9: Fortunately for us, we feel really good about where we
- 16:42Speaker 9: are in the O aligned depth. We return a lot
- 16:44Speaker 9: of guys from a year ago and we had a
- 16:45Speaker 9: good O line. But you know, in college and particularly
- 16:49Speaker 9: in a developmental program, you got to be patient with
- 16:52Speaker 9: with all of those things. And over time, like we're
- 16:55Speaker 9: experiencing now, we look out on the field and see
- 16:57Speaker 9: better football being played. That's exciting for us.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Do you feel like the portal itself is good for
- 17:03Speaker 3: Vanderbilt because with I would say the surge of what
- 17:10Speaker 3: will be the world, like just the momentum the program
- 17:12Speaker 3: has that people are now looking too if we're going
- 17:15Speaker 3: to hop out of another SEC school to give Vanderbilt
- 17:18Speaker 3: a look for the first time.
- 17:19Speaker 9: I think there's a lot of reasons to feel like
- 17:21Speaker 9: that the portal can serve us well. Will never be
- 17:25Speaker 9: a team that builds out of the portal, just because
- 17:28Speaker 9: I think that that. When I think about sustained success here,
- 17:31Speaker 9: I think about building it through retention in our systems,
- 17:34Speaker 9: retention in our culture, retention in our language. I think
- 17:37Speaker 9: it's so important. And when you're swapping players out every year,
- 17:40Speaker 9: it's hard to it's hard to actually own an identity.
- 17:43Speaker 9: So we want to we want to be really deliberate
- 17:44Speaker 9: with the fact that we are. We're recruiting players to
- 17:47Speaker 9: be here four and five years to learn our systems,
- 17:51Speaker 9: learn our culture, learn our language, and to be able
- 17:54Speaker 9: to teach that within their roles as a player run program.
- 17:57Speaker 9: But when you look at the facility upgrades, and I
- 18:00Speaker 9: obviously you know, we got to keep, you know, pulling
- 18:03Speaker 9: the progression line of success in terms of our results.
- 18:07Speaker 9: Being in Nashville, Tennessee, which has got such a great
- 18:10Speaker 9: local recruiting base, you know, being able to call some
- 18:14Speaker 9: of those guys back home. Obviously Nashville being attractive to
- 18:17Speaker 9: people that want to maybe a different experience and then
- 18:21Speaker 9: what they started their college in. And then obviously as
- 18:23Speaker 9: we build this program to sustain success, I think it
- 18:26Speaker 9: becomes very attractive for those guys looking for a new home.
- 18:29Speaker 9: We just we have to be very disciplined to make
- 18:32Speaker 9: sure we don't lose the kind of the strategy of
- 18:35Speaker 9: the program, which is again to build it from the
- 18:37Speaker 9: bottom up and not not to be traded in players
- 18:39Speaker 9: in and out every year.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Does it concern you or is it a good concern
- 18:43Speaker 3: that the better your program gets, you have to almost.
- 18:47Speaker 6: Re recruit your guys to stay.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Because if you're getting higher quality players, obviously, if they're
- 18:53Speaker 3: not getting playtime they deserve, they may look elsewhere. Have
- 18:56Speaker 3: you had to start that process at all?
- 18:58Speaker 9: Well? Yeah, I mean we think it's important no matter
- 19:01Speaker 9: the success of the program that as a coach, your
- 19:05Speaker 9: responsibility is to keep your players connected with the vision
- 19:09Speaker 9: for success that you have for them within the program,
- 19:11Speaker 9: and so we need to communicate that every day. You know,
- 19:15Speaker 9: we are a program that takes a long term approach.
- 19:18Speaker 9: That doesn't mean we're you know, punting our success to
- 19:20Speaker 9: five years from now. It just means that We're going
- 19:22Speaker 9: to give people time to develop. We're never going to
- 19:25Speaker 9: give up on someone. If we've recruited them into this program,
- 19:27Speaker 9: they belong here, and so even if they don't see
- 19:30Speaker 9: the results right away, it's our job to keep them
- 19:33Speaker 9: in the fight, to keep them learning and growing and
- 19:36Speaker 9: inspired to take action that takes intention. You know, that
- 19:40Speaker 9: has to be part of the design. And certainly we
- 19:43Speaker 9: also celebrate those guys that at the moment they feel
- 19:47Speaker 9: like this isn't quite right for them, that they go
- 19:50Speaker 9: and find opportunities elsewhere that allow them to get out
- 19:52Speaker 9: there and play. I don't see that as a bad
- 19:54Speaker 9: thing at all. But to me, we are what we're
- 19:57Speaker 9: delivering here as an experience for the players. It's one
- 19:59Speaker 9: that we're putting resources into their development. They're challenged and
- 20:03Speaker 9: supported here, they're building connection and bonds through doing hard
- 20:07Speaker 9: things together. That to me is the starting point for us.
- 20:11Speaker 9: And so I believe that you recruit your team every
- 20:14Speaker 9: single day in the way that you again deliver that experience.
- 20:18Speaker 9: And so we're very again, very intentional, and we've designed
- 20:22Speaker 9: this as a part of our process.
- 20:24Speaker 3: You a players coach, you a disciplinarian, how would your
- 20:28Speaker 3: guys describe you.
- 20:29Speaker 9: You know, we talked about building boundaries here. You know,
- 20:34Speaker 9: I'd like to think that I'm a player's coach. I mean,
- 20:36Speaker 9: I'm relatively young. I try to make sure that the
- 20:41Speaker 9: boundaries we set are around things that are most important.
- 20:44Speaker 9: We're trying to be a team that still functions from
- 20:49Speaker 9: a foundation of human connection, and so you know, my
- 20:52Speaker 9: messages a lot of times challenge the idea that we're
- 20:56Speaker 9: all inherently selfish. But we have to put the team
- 20:59Speaker 9: mission for and what does that look like? You know again,
- 21:02Speaker 9: we coaching is full of cliches, and team sport is
- 21:06Speaker 9: full of cliches. But to us, it's less about the
- 21:09Speaker 9: words and more about the action. But yeah, I mean,
- 21:12Speaker 9: I want again, my focus is on the experience of
- 21:15Speaker 9: the player, and so I do demand discipline in certain areas,
- 21:19Speaker 9: and there are high, high operating standards here and high expectations.
- 21:22Speaker 9: But my job ultimately is to explain why that is
- 21:26Speaker 9: and why it's important. We don't have rules here, we
- 21:29Speaker 9: have standards, and in those standards should be taught. And
- 21:32Speaker 9: once you allow the player to have ownership over that
- 21:35Speaker 9: and to understand it totally, I think in the end
- 21:38Speaker 9: they it becomes theirs not mine.
- 21:39Speaker 3: Is it harder to get in to play football here?
- 21:41Speaker 3: Is there a different admission standard to play banderbilt football.
- 21:44Speaker 6: Than other schools? Like a great point or I don't know.
- 21:48Speaker 6: It just feels like you gotta be smarter.
- 21:49Speaker 4: A lot of smart kets here.
- 21:50Speaker 6: Yeah, just like why they weren't a monocle under their helmet.
- 21:52Speaker 6: That's what I feel like that would be.
- 21:53Speaker 9: Like it is harder here, and we sell it, we
- 21:56Speaker 9: embrace that. It's not. You know, again, we don't have
- 21:59Speaker 9: a team abouting were ins. We have guys from all
- 22:01Speaker 9: kinds of diverse backgrounds and academic experiences. We like to
- 22:06Speaker 9: think that no matter where you're from or what your
- 22:09Speaker 9: experience has been in the classroom, that there are certain
- 22:11Speaker 9: foundational elements that you know, we provide support here where
- 22:14Speaker 9: you're going to have success. But you know, our guys
- 22:17Speaker 9: have to go to class, they have to turn their
- 22:19Speaker 9: assignments in. We're going to have midterms here in a
- 22:22Speaker 9: couple months, and you know that's going to be a
- 22:24Speaker 9: challenge to them, and we don't look at that as
- 22:27Speaker 9: somehow independent of the football experience. You know, we're training
- 22:30Speaker 9: pros here and just like for you, there are times
- 22:34Speaker 9: where you get up and you have passion for your work,
- 22:36Speaker 9: but certainly I'm sure you'd love to stay home and
- 22:39Speaker 9: you have to get on the road and you don't
- 22:41Speaker 9: have choices in some areas when you want to chase excellence. No,
- 22:44Speaker 9: it's no different for a professional football player. I mean,
- 22:46Speaker 9: there are things that you have to sacrifice in order
- 22:50Speaker 9: to refine your skills and to have staying power. And
- 22:53Speaker 9: our guys learn that, not just in our program, but
- 22:56Speaker 9: in everything that they touch here at Vanderbilt, that it's
- 23:00Speaker 9: not always about doing the things that you want to do.
- 23:02Speaker 9: It's doing the things you need to do to sustain success.
- 23:05Speaker 9: And you know, any results a lag effect of your investment.
- 23:08Speaker 9: So these guys are investing in every area of their
- 23:12Speaker 9: life while they're here. And it's to me one of
- 23:14Speaker 9: the great parts and one of my great beliefs about
- 23:17Speaker 9: why this job is important is because from this room
- 23:21Speaker 9: will be you know, the future leaders of our communities.
- 23:24Speaker 9: Certainly many of these guys will do that from NFL podiums,
- 23:27Speaker 9: you know, in platforms, but beyond that, I mean, you know,
- 23:30Speaker 9: we're gonna we're gonna send out some really capable people
- 23:33Speaker 9: that will have an impact in the world that my
- 23:35Speaker 9: kids will inherit and that that's you know, kind of
- 23:37Speaker 9: a part of my mission envision for the program.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Are there kids that can't play here though, because they
- 23:42Speaker 3: didn't make it greade that they could go and play
- 23:43Speaker 3: it in Arkansas because the standards wouldn't be as high.
- 23:47Speaker 6: I mean, that's just what I feel about VAMA.
- 23:48Speaker 3: I feel like it's harder to play to get in here,
- 23:50Speaker 3: even to play football, and that what at times, and
- 23:53Speaker 3: that's what speak to the work that you're doing here.
- 23:55Speaker 3: At times that would be tough for a coach because
- 23:57Speaker 3: you're not actually recruiting the same that the playing field.
- 24:01Speaker 9: We we don't our pool is not quite as deep.
- 24:04Speaker 9: You know, there are certain standards. Now those standards aren't
- 24:07Speaker 9: you know, totally in lockstep with a normal student emission process,
- 24:11Speaker 9: but it's our responsibility to to you know, when when
- 24:16Speaker 9: we are finding guys that maybe don't have the strength
- 24:18Speaker 9: of foundation in the classroom, we're looking for, you know,
- 24:22Speaker 9: competitive characteristics that tell us that they're really interested in
- 24:26Speaker 9: what this educational experience has to offer. We don't sell
- 24:29Speaker 9: Vanderbilt as a degree. I think that makes it way
- 24:32Speaker 9: too simple. You know, this is a this is an experience.
- 24:34Speaker 9: You're going to learn to think critically, You're going to
- 24:36Speaker 9: learn to ask good questions, You're going to learn to
- 24:38Speaker 9: interface with some of the best professors in the world.
- 24:42Speaker 9: That's an experience again that will pay dividends in every area.
- 24:46Speaker 9: And does that mean that sometimes you know, we're limited
- 24:50Speaker 9: in our choices certainly, you know, compared to our peers,
- 24:53Speaker 9: But we don't see that as a disadvantage. You know.
- 24:56Speaker 9: I think if we're doing the right thing and doing
- 24:58Speaker 9: our due diligence with respect to the you know that
- 25:01Speaker 9: that threshold for ability, you know, and then you look
- 25:05Speaker 9: at a threshold for character, and say, if we're above
- 25:07Speaker 9: those two lines, you know we're gonna be able to
- 25:10Speaker 9: build a competitive team. And that's where again that the
- 25:14Speaker 9: design of the program as a developmental program allows us
- 25:16Speaker 9: to take someone that has speed and length and frame,
- 25:21Speaker 9: but maybe hasn't built it out, or maybe doesn't have
- 25:23Speaker 9: the play experience yet, that may have been overlooked or
- 25:26Speaker 9: undervalued as a recruit that we know can have success
- 25:30Speaker 9: in a challenging environment, and we grow them in our
- 25:33Speaker 9: systems and our culture, and we believe that's going to
- 25:36Speaker 9: produce a dominant program in this conference.
- 25:39Speaker 4: Coach, how do you keep the excitement the momentum throughout
- 25:43Speaker 4: the season, because I know personally, for me, when I
- 25:45Speaker 4: get back from vacation, it's like, awesome, this is great
- 25:48Speaker 4: and all, but two weeks, three weeks into it, I'm like,
- 25:50Speaker 4: I'm ready for vacation again. So how do you guys
- 25:53Speaker 4: keep it going throughout the season If you're not winning
- 25:55Speaker 4: every game, I understand. If you're winning all the time,
- 25:57Speaker 4: you're like, all right, let's go.
- 25:59Speaker 9: Yeah. I think know the truth is that, you know,
- 26:03Speaker 9: as humans were problem solvers, and sometimes you know, I've
- 26:08Speaker 9: been on teams that have had undefeated regular seasons and
- 26:11Speaker 9: that sometimes challenges you more than years where you're trying
- 26:15Speaker 9: to problem solve and figure it out. I mean, I
- 26:17Speaker 9: think it's all a matter of the time and effort
- 26:20Speaker 9: you've spent on foundation. How well you know your team,
- 26:22Speaker 9: how well they know each other, how deep is their
- 26:25Speaker 9: purpose in playing the game. Like that's important and we
- 26:29Speaker 9: take time to develop that. And that doesn't start at
- 26:32Speaker 9: fall camp. That starts in January when the team starts formation.
- 26:37Speaker 9: But if you think about the year as a whole,
- 26:42Speaker 9: you know, we split the year into cycles, and so
- 26:45Speaker 9: formation cycle is really kind of foundational to us that
- 26:49Speaker 9: that goes from January through spring ball. Preparation cycle is
- 26:52Speaker 9: summer into through fall camp, and then this is execution cycle.
- 26:56Speaker 9: And so for us, this is really on the calendar
- 27:00Speaker 9: three months. You know, we're fighting for a fourth and
- 27:03Speaker 9: a fifth month, but the season happens so quickly that
- 27:09Speaker 9: we won't You don't even have time to get distracted.
- 27:13Speaker 9: I mean, it's it's day in, day out. You're hitting
- 27:16Speaker 9: the reset button. And I think my biggest challenge and
- 27:18Speaker 9: a coach's biggest challenge in this time is to not
- 27:21Speaker 9: defer an after action review to after the season. Is
- 27:25Speaker 9: how do you focus on the most important things where
- 27:29Speaker 9: you can adjust and adapt performance in the moment so
- 27:31Speaker 9: that your team is playing better, you know, in December
- 27:35Speaker 9: than you are. You know at the beginning of the year.
- 27:37Speaker 3: You ever look in the mirror and go, holy crap,
- 27:39Speaker 3: I can I believe I'm coaching Division one school because
- 27:41Speaker 3: I do that stuff. I'm like, I can't believe I'm
- 27:43Speaker 3: playing the stage. And I work so hard sometimes I
- 27:46Speaker 3: don't think about it, but like I have a little
- 27:48Speaker 3: break or just like it hits me and I'm.
- 27:50Speaker 6: Like, what is happening. I can't believe it. Does that
- 27:54Speaker 6: ever happen with you?
- 27:55Speaker 9: It does? Yeah, I mean, I'm I don't know. Living
- 27:58Speaker 9: the dream is the wrong thing to say, because I
- 28:00Speaker 9: you know, I think for you too, I mean, you
- 28:03Speaker 9: sacrifice a lot and you put a lot of time
- 28:05Speaker 9: and effort in to reach these opportunities. The one thing
- 28:07Speaker 9: that I that struck me as I as I accepted
- 28:11Speaker 9: this position then stepped into it was it's you know,
- 28:14Speaker 9: I think in your mind and I don't know if
- 28:16Speaker 9: that you would relate to this, but I would imagine
- 28:18Speaker 9: you would as you're playing those environments. Is see you
- 28:21Speaker 9: see those moments in your mind before you reach them
- 28:25Speaker 9: as arrivals and really their beginnings. And one of the
- 28:29Speaker 9: cool things for me is this job, this role that
- 28:33Speaker 9: I didn't do very well in my first iteration, that
- 28:36Speaker 9: I'm growing and learning and becoming more effective in. It's
- 28:41Speaker 9: a journey in of itself, and so to me, it's
- 28:43Speaker 9: like a great challenge and it's something that the thing
- 28:48Speaker 9: I'm working on now is just to take enough time
- 28:52Speaker 9: to really appreciate, you know, how I'm being stretched and
- 28:55Speaker 9: how I'm learning and how I'm evolving forward. While it's
- 28:58Speaker 9: going on because I don't want to look up in
- 29:00Speaker 9: ten fifteen years, and I think I wish I would have,
- 29:03Speaker 9: you know, really thought about that more while I was
- 29:05Speaker 9: in it. But certainly, I feel like I have a
- 29:10Speaker 9: great life and I am so excited to be in
- 29:13Speaker 9: the role and be around the people that I'll get
- 29:15Speaker 9: to be around every day.
- 29:16Speaker 3: They have therapists for creatives, and so I go to
- 29:18Speaker 3: my therapists and they deal with creatives all the time,
- 29:20Speaker 3: so we're extra nights.
- 29:21Speaker 6: Do they have therapists and football coaches?
- 29:23Speaker 9: Well, we need them and we you know, there's obviously
- 29:27Speaker 9: a sports psychologists, I you know, for me personally, I
- 29:29Speaker 9: work with an executive coach that that you know. I
- 29:33Speaker 9: think the first time we sat down, I needed a therapist,
- 29:37Speaker 9: and I think it had to do with, you know,
- 29:38Speaker 9: the pressure and just feeling like I was kind of
- 29:41Speaker 9: on the verge of a season where I really didn't
- 29:44Speaker 9: know what to expect. This was year one. As I've
- 29:47Speaker 9: been able to like get my head above water and
- 29:51Speaker 9: really you know, established consistency in my routine and my role.
- 29:55Speaker 9: I think now we talk more strategically and about you know,
- 29:58Speaker 9: how I become better at.
- 29:59Speaker 6: My job, but not place.
- 30:01Speaker 9: You talking about humans, human strategic and how do I
- 30:04Speaker 9: facilitate performance and other people? Right? I mean no different
- 30:06Speaker 9: than you. You know, my mood swings impact everyone in
- 30:10Speaker 9: the building, and so it's not so much always about
- 30:14Speaker 9: how I feel. It's how I perform in my role
- 30:16Speaker 9: that allows other people to be effective. And my message
- 30:19Speaker 9: is really important here. It does set the course, but
- 30:24Speaker 9: it's only as impactful as my assistants carry it to
- 30:28Speaker 9: their rooms. Uh, and my players carry it in their hearts.
- 30:32Speaker 9: And so I've got to be super aware of the
- 30:36Speaker 9: manner in which I delivered that message and focus on
- 30:39Speaker 9: responding rather than reacting. Those are things that I don't
- 30:44Speaker 9: know that you really fully grasp until you're you know,
- 30:47Speaker 9: you're in the role and you have to learn on the.
- 30:48Speaker 3: Move, respond and react. I constantly I am talking to
- 30:51Speaker 3: my people about that. I don't want I try to
- 30:52Speaker 3: get out of a lizard brain. I try to get
- 30:54Speaker 3: out of flipping that because if I'm reacting, it usually
- 30:56Speaker 3: ain't good.
- 30:57Speaker 6: That's right.
- 30:58Speaker 3: My reactions, just you, Jill, are not good unless I'm
- 31:01Speaker 3: like dodging something other than that.
- 31:03Speaker 6: You know, it ain't It ain't good.
- 31:06Speaker 4: Being a head coach, is it? Comparable to say, being
- 31:09Speaker 4: the man of the house, where like I have four kids,
- 31:13Speaker 4: it's my house, right, it's my house.
- 31:15Speaker 6: I run man of the house, though, feels like nineteen
- 31:17Speaker 6: fifty check it though. Listen, okay, hear me out.
- 31:19Speaker 2: Hear me out though.
- 31:20Speaker 6: So I run the house, but I really don't do much.
- 31:23Speaker 4: I tell the boys what to do, like you are
- 31:26Speaker 4: going to take out the trash, right right, like you
- 31:27Speaker 4: take up the trash, you're going to take the dog out.
- 31:30Speaker 2: You were going to feed the dog.
- 31:31Speaker 4: So is that kind of head coach life where you're
- 31:33Speaker 4: just kind of like, I run this thing, but all
- 31:35Speaker 4: my people.
- 31:36Speaker 9: Run it simply. Well, I see the parallel there we go.
- 31:41Speaker 9: Would say, that's it's a little more complicated because it's
- 31:48Speaker 9: not so much telling people what to do. It's inspiring
- 31:52Speaker 9: action in the spirit of co creation? Is that too much?
- 31:57Speaker 6: When I tell us is my foreman never said co creation? However,
- 32:00Speaker 6: he didn't use that word. No, it's a whole different deal.
- 32:03Speaker 3: He'd be like he'd just sit back there, smoke a
- 32:05Speaker 3: cigarette and be like, you did you miss that spot?
- 32:07Speaker 6: It didn't feel like that's what You're the opposite of that.
- 32:09Speaker 9: So here here's here's like, this is something I shared
- 32:13Speaker 9: with the team in my first year, and the first
- 32:15Speaker 9: year was really hard, and I look back on it
- 32:18Speaker 9: reverently because it was our beginning and we had to
- 32:22Speaker 9: go through it. And I think all the pain that
- 32:23Speaker 9: was emotional after the Kentucky win last year, and I
- 32:26Speaker 9: think a lot of people made the assumption that that
- 32:28Speaker 9: was because there was an SEC streak that we ended,
- 32:32Speaker 9: or as my first SEC win, And really I didn't
- 32:34Speaker 9: think about any of that or talk about it. I mean,
- 32:37Speaker 9: that was not on my mind at all, because I've
- 32:39Speaker 9: got a belief in what we're doing, and we say
- 32:41Speaker 9: in the program a belief is a practice, and so
- 32:43Speaker 9: you just step into that belief every day. But my
- 32:46Speaker 9: emotion was more about the pain of our beginning and
- 32:49Speaker 9: how much that this group of guys had gone through
- 32:52Speaker 9: to get to that point, and being so excited for
- 32:55Speaker 9: them to experience in me to to experience that breakthrough.
- 32:59Speaker 9: But in that first year, I was inspired to tell
- 33:04Speaker 9: the team that what we were doing was very similar
- 33:07Speaker 9: to what it feels like to be a parent for
- 33:09Speaker 9: the first time. And my experience with that was you know,
- 33:14Speaker 9: you're you're you're obviously you find out that your wife's
- 33:18Speaker 9: pregnant and you know your baby's incubating and that word
- 33:22Speaker 9: is way too passive, but you know, we don't know
- 33:24Speaker 9: the experience in total. But every day you're talking to
- 33:27Speaker 9: your baby, you're thinking about you know, for me it
- 33:29Speaker 9: was our first son, C three, and it's you know, what,
- 33:33Speaker 9: what is it? You know one day he's going to
- 33:35Speaker 9: be the president, the next day he's going to be
- 33:36Speaker 9: a professional athlete. Then after that you're like, I just
- 33:38Speaker 9: hope he's honest and hard working. Right, you have all
- 33:40Speaker 9: these visions for success, and then the day comes when
- 33:46Speaker 9: you're called to the hospital and you know, the next
- 33:49Speaker 9: thing you know, you're, again to oversimplify, you're holding all
- 33:53Speaker 9: those hopes and dreams in your hands. And I think
- 33:55Speaker 9: that's there's no more human moment and almost spiritual moment
- 33:59Speaker 9: for me than that, Like, right, you're holding your child
- 34:01Speaker 9: hopes and dreams, and then you know, and then he
- 34:06Speaker 9: goes to the bathroom on you, and you can't give
- 34:09Speaker 9: him back and say, hey, come back. When when you
- 34:12Speaker 9: learn how to use the toilet, think about it, but
- 34:15Speaker 9: you can't. You can't do that, as it turns out,
- 34:17Speaker 9: So what then you recognize in that moment that you
- 34:22Speaker 9: learn to put diapers on and you realize that all
- 34:24Speaker 9: those hopes and dreams that you had that you microwaved
- 34:27Speaker 9: in your mind still exist. Are you willing to love
- 34:30Speaker 9: and invest in that person every day? And so we
- 34:33Speaker 9: talk in this program like we're coparenting this program, and
- 34:36Speaker 9: it's appropriate for us because we meet external doubt every
- 34:42Speaker 9: day and most people don't really understand what we're doing here,
- 34:46Speaker 9: and so rather than try to convince them or somehow
- 34:49Speaker 9: fight those battles externally, we focus on the love and
- 34:53Speaker 9: investment we bring internally every single day. And we know
- 34:56Speaker 9: that the ripple effect of that how it manifests externally
- 34:59Speaker 9: will be to to show and to reveal. But that's
- 35:03Speaker 9: really not what's important to us. It's it's what we
- 35:05Speaker 9: do inside together that ultimately is what's rewarding and fulfilling
- 35:10Speaker 9: to us.
- 35:10Speaker 6: Man of the house. No, that's the stupidest prime.
- 35:14Speaker 3: But I do not accept the term man of the house.
- 35:17Speaker 3: My wife pretty much. I guess if anybody give me
- 35:20Speaker 3: the man be problematic?
- 35:21Speaker 6: Yes?
- 35:22Speaker 10: Right?
- 35:22Speaker 2: Could anyone?
- 35:22Speaker 9: Yes?
- 35:23Speaker 3: Final three questions? What are your most used cliches? It's
- 35:27Speaker 3: gonna be three of your most used cliches.
- 35:30Speaker 9: Well, I mean these are going to be unique to
- 35:33Speaker 9: our program. But the first actually stole this from my
- 35:38Speaker 9: time at wake Forest at Dave Clawson. But successful people
- 35:42Speaker 9: leave clues. So anytime that we have a guest in
- 35:46Speaker 9: the in the that spends times with our program, or
- 35:50Speaker 9: even if it's a player that's experiencing success, and that
- 35:53Speaker 9: could be success in process. But I'll say to the
- 35:57Speaker 9: team's successful people leave and they'll finish the sentence clues.
- 36:00Speaker 9: And the idea is just that we're paying attention to
- 36:03Speaker 9: to what people to what people have done to reach
- 36:07Speaker 9: levels of success. And important for me, you know, because
- 36:11Speaker 9: we're trying to build resilience, is also acknowledging the adversity
- 36:14Speaker 9: that they've gone through to get there. So that's one belief,
- 36:17Speaker 9: is a practice is another one. And again that's just
- 36:20Speaker 9: meant to like paint the picture that you know when
- 36:27Speaker 9: you again, this is where I come from. Once you
- 36:31Speaker 9: set your intention and your belief on something, the universe
- 36:35Speaker 9: will align with you in your quest. And that doesn't
- 36:39Speaker 9: always mean you get what you want, but you get
- 36:41Speaker 9: what you need. And so that could be the sting
- 36:43Speaker 9: of a painful result that could be you know, a
- 36:47Speaker 9: disappointing act by a team member whatever you know. But
- 36:51Speaker 9: it can also be positive things too, but you're seeing
- 36:53Speaker 9: them not as impediments to your your journey. You're seeing
- 36:58Speaker 9: them as depath or the way forward. And so belief
- 37:02Speaker 9: is a practice is one is that's important to us,
- 37:06Speaker 9: And you asked for three, So I don't use that one.
- 37:12Speaker 9: That's I think that's a good one, though, honestly, as
- 37:15Speaker 9: a parent, use that one for sure.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Well probably literal though I like that your team finishes
- 37:20Speaker 3: your your sayings or your I don't say cliches, but
- 37:23Speaker 3: your mantras. My team didn't really do that. The only
- 37:25Speaker 3: one we do is ready.
- 37:27Speaker 9: Oh you know what, I may steal that one. That'll
- 37:32Speaker 9: be my third and they can sing it hence forth. Yeah.
- 37:34Speaker 6: Any two questions left?
- 37:36Speaker 2: All right, coach?
- 37:37Speaker 4: Do you care about what the media says? Do you
- 37:39Speaker 4: read all that stuff during the season? Do you pay
- 37:41Speaker 4: any attention to it?
- 37:43Speaker 9: No? Two part answer to that, I don't engage at all.
- 37:48Speaker 9: And what you know, what's being said or what is
- 37:54Speaker 9: on message boards or whatever social media platforms. And that's hard,
- 37:58Speaker 9: and I know I've I've not always had that discipline,
- 38:02Speaker 9: and I think that the the problem I solve is
- 38:05Speaker 9: once that starts to impact the way you the lens
- 38:08Speaker 9: through which you view your experience, You're you're all floaded
- 38:11Speaker 9: loading power to people that that really shouldn't matter, right,
- 38:15Speaker 9: and that could be they're praising you. I didn't have
- 38:18Speaker 9: a whole lot of bad games when I was at
- 38:20Speaker 9: Notre Dame as a defensive coordinator. I had a couple,
- 38:23Speaker 9: and what I realized pretty quickly was for whatever good
- 38:28Speaker 9: you know, will that i'd built up in good performance,
- 38:31Speaker 9: when I had a bad one, it was pretty quick
- 38:33Speaker 9: to crash down. So why would I spend time and
- 38:35Speaker 9: energy on that. So that's the first part. The second
- 38:37Speaker 9: part is I think it is important to pay attention
- 38:40Speaker 9: to narratives around the program because our our players will
- 38:44Speaker 9: experience those, and also we want to we want to
- 38:48Speaker 9: have an ability to to to message our community about
- 38:53Speaker 9: the exciting things that are going on here. And so
- 38:56Speaker 9: what I've done in order to do that is just
- 38:59Speaker 9: to to have a lot of transparency and open doors.
- 39:01Speaker 9: And that wasn't actually how I was running the program
- 39:04Speaker 9: year one, and I realized that I was really misunderstood,
- 39:08Speaker 9: and so I just started to let people in and
- 39:11Speaker 9: team meetings, position meetings, whatever they wanted to come to
- 39:15Speaker 9: you know, I wanted them to see beyond the curtain.
- 39:18Speaker 9: And I think that's been helpful at least in giving
- 39:21Speaker 9: the people that are writing the stories perspective on what
- 39:25Speaker 9: we're doing and why we feel like this is so special.
- 39:29Speaker 6: To show up, bro.
- 39:30Speaker 4: I know I also heard too, he's not going to
- 39:32Speaker 4: watch this.
- 39:33Speaker 6: We're not the real media. Yeah, what the stupid media.
- 39:37Speaker 3: Final question, Let's talk about next season. You guys end
- 39:40Speaker 3: extremely high. I mean I have a like a great
- 39:43Speaker 3: taste in my mouth from Vanderbilt football because of how
- 39:45Speaker 3: you guys ended last year. And it was the most
- 39:47Speaker 3: organized storming of the field I've ever seen, passing tickets
- 39:51Speaker 3: to storm the field.
- 39:52Speaker 6: It was awesome. One at a time. Yes, absolutely, all right.
- 39:54Speaker 3: So do you feel better now going into this season
- 39:59Speaker 3: as compared to going into last year and even the
- 40:02Speaker 3: year before then.
- 40:03Speaker 9: I feel more connected to who we are and I
- 40:06Speaker 9: think that that's like again, I you know, I'm gonna
- 40:11Speaker 9: I'm gonna impale myself on this job. So what I
- 40:15Speaker 9: want to do is is feel a connection with the
- 40:17Speaker 9: people in this program, and I want to feel like
- 40:19Speaker 9: I'm fighting for them every day. That's how I feel.
- 40:21Speaker 9: So I'm really excited and we've gotten better. To the
- 40:25Speaker 9: weird thing about what we're doing is that what I
- 40:29Speaker 9: hope is that every year we kind of reset expectations
- 40:33Speaker 9: and it actually makes my job a little harder. And so,
- 40:37Speaker 9: you know, I do think the way we finished last season,
- 40:41Speaker 9: we accomplish that to a point. I think that our
- 40:44Speaker 9: fans and even those outside are expecting more from us,
- 40:49Speaker 9: and we're to point this program right now where there's
- 40:51Speaker 9: nothing guaranteed, So you know, we we have to win
- 40:54Speaker 9: every margin and show up to play every week. But
- 40:57Speaker 9: certainly I want with every year this job to come
- 41:00Speaker 9: harder and harder because people have expectations of what Vanderbilt
- 41:02Speaker 9: football is about. And I think I will ultimately measure
- 41:05Speaker 9: success on how I've impacted the lives of the people
- 41:08Speaker 9: in this program. But a close second is how much
- 41:11Speaker 9: how challenging I've made my job from a standpoint of
- 41:15Speaker 9: meeting those expectations every year.
- 41:17Speaker 6: You mentioned the narrative the program. I end with this.
- 41:19Speaker 3: I think the narrative of this program because of the
- 41:22Speaker 3: upward trajectory, because that's a big part. Momentum is a big,
- 41:27Speaker 3: big word, big part of it. How you end a
- 41:29Speaker 3: year I think it's just I mentioned I was coming
- 41:32Speaker 3: to talk to you, and the two people I talked
- 41:35Speaker 3: to about today they are like, that team's really turn
- 41:36Speaker 3: themselves around.
- 41:37Speaker 11: Now.
- 41:38Speaker 3: I think you want two conference games, but those were
- 41:40Speaker 3: two big conference games and they're recent, and so I
- 41:43Speaker 3: think the narrative of this program is, hey, this thing
- 41:46Speaker 3: is trending in an absolutely right direction, and it feels
- 41:49Speaker 3: like you're rooting for the best interest.
- 41:51Speaker 6: I need w's coach, well, I need WS two. Okay,
- 41:55Speaker 6: good yeah, coach, good luck. We really appreciate it.
- 42:00Speaker 10: You might.
- 42:00Speaker 6: You sound like you read a lot of.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Books, like it's like they want to play for you know, coach.
- 42:04Speaker 3: I don't un An interesting already said I got to
- 42:06Speaker 3: go back, and I'm like put this in chance and
- 42:08Speaker 3: watch it and that dumb guy it up.
- 42:10Speaker 6: But we're rooting for you last year and really rooting
- 42:12Speaker 6: for you this year. Wow.
- 42:13Speaker 9: It's great to have you guys here, and it's always
- 42:15Speaker 9: fun to do this and appreciate.
- 42:17Speaker 6: Us to do this.
- 42:18Speaker 3: What like in a way it's like talk to this
- 42:20Speaker 3: whatever this is, talk to the challenge children.
- 42:22Speaker 6: He's like, you know, sometimes I like to do this. Well,
- 42:25Speaker 6: thanks for the charity out of the goodness of my heart. Yes,
- 42:28Speaker 6: of course, coach thank you very much. Appreciate you guys.
- 42:34Speaker 3: All right, thank you, coach Lee. We got some players
- 42:36Speaker 3: coming up in a few minutes. But you've waited all
- 42:38Speaker 3: year and the time has finally arrived. College football is back,

- 42:52Speaker 3: Nashville too. Usually when teams are playing Hawaii, they go
- 42:56Speaker 3: to Hawaii. That'd be pretty sick.
- 42:59Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 42:59Speaker 3: I was talking one of the guys from the team
- 43:00Speaker 3: and they said that last year they went to Hawaiian
- 43:02Speaker 3: they stayed out there for a week and it wasn't
- 43:04Speaker 3: hard to get out there and play the game. It
- 43:06Speaker 3: was to fly back and play another game in like
- 43:07Speaker 3: four days. Yeah that's that way.
- 43:09Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 43:09Speaker 3: So but look, you got Navy at Notre Dame San Jose,
- 43:13Speaker 3: stayed at USC, Hawaii at Vanderbilt. Let's go kick off

- 43:39Speaker 3: See show notes for full details. Hey, what's the deal
- 43:42Speaker 3: with Reggie Bush? You walked in Kevin sent by Reggie Bush.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:45Speaker 7: Now he's going not going after, but he's get what
- 43:48Speaker 7: he calls sing Yeah, suing a lawsuit, trying to get
- 43:51Speaker 7: his heisman back because they've been battling for a couple
- 43:54Speaker 7: of years now with the nil deals. Now that it's
- 43:56Speaker 7: legal and all that, so he's trying to tell the
- 43:58Speaker 7: Heisman Committee, Hey, I need my trophy back because you
- 44:00Speaker 7: can get paid for this. So what they need to
- 44:02Speaker 7: do is find out if if it's legal enough nowadays
- 44:05Speaker 7: for that to go down twenty years ago, then he
- 44:08Speaker 7: also deserves his heisman.
- 44:10Speaker 2: It's a it's a little sticky. Were they the rules then? Yes?
- 44:13Speaker 3: Okay, right, and that's it, right, that's that's what it's like.
- 44:17Speaker 3: Somebody and I'm not sure what the protocol is. But
- 44:21Speaker 3: let's say in Colorado where weed is legal, Well, now
- 44:25Speaker 3: that it's legal, everybody that's ever had a drug charge,
- 44:27Speaker 3: if they're in jail for a weed charge or they
- 44:28Speaker 3: just let out immediately. No, do they just get it
- 44:30Speaker 3: all like spunge from the record.
- 44:33Speaker 2: I don't think so.
- 44:34Speaker 10: I'm not.
- 44:34Speaker 4: Whatever the law was then, like you broke it and
- 44:37Speaker 4: hear that was your punishment then, right, so you got
- 44:39Speaker 4: to serve it.
- 44:40Speaker 5: So you don't think he deserves it.
- 44:41Speaker 6: I don't.
- 44:42Speaker 4: I didn't say that, yeah, Eddie, I don't know, Like
- 44:45Speaker 4: I really don't.
- 44:46Speaker 2: I don't.
- 44:46Speaker 4: I just really if you're basing it on that rule
- 44:49Speaker 4: of that whole guide in what guideline, I mean, it's
- 44:52Speaker 4: just you broke the rule back then, that.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Was the rule.
- 44:55Speaker 3: What sucks is his records don't even count for college football,
- 44:58Speaker 3: all the touchdowns, the yards, the better season. Maybe you'd
- 45:02Speaker 3: have some sort of who paid him what happened there.
- 45:05Speaker 3: I don't know who paid him, but he was making.
- 45:07Speaker 3: I mean a lot of other us. I mean all
- 45:09Speaker 3: those guys. Yeah, you know he just got caught. Did
- 45:12Speaker 3: Manzell get his heisman taken away?
- 45:15Speaker 2: M hm? I mean he he had a whole business going.
- 45:19Speaker 5: It just came out of the documentary about it.
- 45:21Speaker 4: So there's a lot to be argued here. If I
- 45:23Speaker 4: was Reagie Bush exactly, you know what I mean, Like,
- 45:28Speaker 4: I feel targeted right now.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Compromise, Give the guys heisman, but don't give his records back. Yeah,
- 45:33Speaker 3: because you got to say, what do you want more?
- 45:35Speaker 3: You want the trophy? You want your record? I want
- 45:36Speaker 3: the trophy, Yeah, for sure, because you got to say
- 45:38Speaker 3: face somehow if you're the NCAA.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's probably you reach a compromise there. Tough.
- 45:45Speaker 2: He should have it, he should have his eyes.
- 45:46Speaker 6: Yes.
- 45:47Speaker 3: Okay, So let's get seminaries with the players. First up,
- 45:49Speaker 3: starting quarterback aj Swan from Vanderbilt. He was an under
- 45:52Speaker 3: Armour All American in high school, an Elite eleven finalists
- 45:55Speaker 3: four star prospect before enrolling at Vandy in twenty twenty two.
- 45:58Speaker 3: Ah had almost thirteen hundred yards passing with ten touchdowns
- 46:00Speaker 3: and only two interceptions as a freshman last year and
- 46:03Speaker 3: you can follow AJ on Twitter at aj swan ten.
- 46:07Speaker 3: He walked up while I was just loosening it up
- 46:09Speaker 3: a little bit. I know he probably saw you a
- 46:11Speaker 3: little timidated. I'm at older than you, so don't worry
- 46:13Speaker 3: about you'll grow into an arm like I have your
- 46:16Speaker 3: thoughts on watching me.
- 46:17Speaker 6: Through a little bit.
- 46:18Speaker 10: Honestly, kind of impressed by both of you. I mean,
- 46:21Speaker 10: I've watched my dad through and it's not the best.
- 46:24Speaker 10: So I hope I always listening to this.
- 46:26Speaker 4: Just how was your dad not the best?
- 46:27Speaker 6: Exactly? I was gonna say, like genetically.
- 46:30Speaker 10: So actually he's first he's left handed, and then in
- 46:33Speaker 10: high school he played tight end and he got his
- 46:34Speaker 10: legs CUTU fro underhim and he put his arm DOWNE
- 46:36Speaker 10: in a broken half.
- 46:37Speaker 6: So he has a broken arm. That'll do it. You're
- 46:40Speaker 6: giving your broken arm dad a hard time. You're comparing
- 46:43Speaker 6: us to your broken arm. Da, that's even worse. You healthy?
- 46:47Speaker 6: You good?
- 46:48Speaker 10: Yeah? I'm healthy, ready for the season and definitely excited
- 46:50Speaker 10: for this week.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, here we go, it's this weekend. It's
- 46:54Speaker 3: a lot of you know, off season, early season. Does
- 46:58Speaker 3: it feel like Christmas? I just feel like man I
- 47:02Speaker 3: just want to get this thing go. I mean, I
- 47:03Speaker 3: don't know, is it like like boom, we're here, or
- 47:05Speaker 3: it's just starting.
- 47:08Speaker 10: Kind of like Christmas. I think Christmas takes too long
- 47:10Speaker 10: to come around, though, Like I think we're all ready
- 47:12Speaker 10: for the season, we're all excited for so I think
- 47:15Speaker 10: that we would have whish for it to come faster,
- 47:16Speaker 10: but we're happy it's here now.
- 47:17Speaker 3: Do you feel like the game has slowed down a
- 47:20Speaker 3: little bit for you from last year to this year,
- 47:22Speaker 3: even because you've had the experience, but also we had
- 47:24Speaker 3: a break to kind of that stuff process.
- 47:26Speaker 10: Absolutely, it's definitely a big difference just at practice. I
- 47:29Speaker 10: actually got in trouble earlier there last week because I
- 47:32Speaker 10: was I was seeing the routes too fast and I
- 47:35Speaker 10: was getting out before the guy's heade was around, So
- 47:37Speaker 10: I had to slow down a little bit. So I
- 47:38Speaker 10: think that's definitely helped, and it's gonna helped going into
- 47:40Speaker 10: this year.
- 47:41Speaker 3: How important is for you and your receivers to have well,
- 47:44Speaker 3: use the word chemistry, I mean it's the most cliche
- 47:46Speaker 3: word there is, but it also means something. Is it
- 47:49Speaker 3: harder to get out on the field with something but
- 47:50Speaker 3: you haven't had a lot of reps with and what's
- 47:52Speaker 3: the difference if they run the right route?
- 47:54Speaker 6: They run the right route, like what is the real difference.
- 47:56Speaker 10: Yeah, chemistry is definitely a big thing, Like, for instance,
- 47:59Speaker 10: like a timing route like a dig or we have
- 48:01Speaker 10: like a Bang eight route, Like those are huge timing
- 48:03Speaker 10: routes because how fast defenses are, especially the se see
- 48:06Speaker 10: like if you're late or anything, it could be a
- 48:08Speaker 10: pass breakup or catch and you get the receiver put
- 48:11Speaker 10: in the bad spot and you can get hit hard.
- 48:13Speaker 10: So timing is a big part of that, and chemists
- 48:15Speaker 10: will be part of that. And it's defughely harder when
- 48:16Speaker 10: you go into the field with the guy you don't
- 48:17Speaker 10: have a good chemistry with because you don't know how
- 48:19Speaker 10: he's gonna run the route or how fast he's gonna
- 48:21Speaker 10: get out of it. The angle's gonna take out of it.
- 48:23Speaker 10: So chemistry is definitely a big part of it.
- 48:25Speaker 3: So physically there are little things that the receiver does
- 48:27Speaker 3: that you're watching as well, meaning if it's good off
- 48:31Speaker 3: off the cut, if he's quick off the line, if
- 48:34Speaker 3: he doesn't jant, so just it's just experienced with another player.
- 48:37Speaker 10: Yeah, absolutely, I think me you Will Shepherd and Jamie
- 48:40Speaker 10: McGowan are like with those two receivers have a really
- 48:42Speaker 10: good connection with and Quincy Skinner's another guy that me
- 48:45Speaker 10: and him are gaining connection every single day. So like
- 48:47Speaker 10: with those three, I feel very confident that I know
- 48:48Speaker 10: when they're gonna get out of their cuts and like bangle,
- 48:50Speaker 10: they're gonna take out of it.
- 48:50Speaker 3: They ever come back and you kill them me, like
- 48:52Speaker 3: you throw it too high. In the same way, you
- 48:54Speaker 3: could be like you killing me, you dropped it like
- 48:56Speaker 3: nobody sees it. But if you throw the ball high
- 48:59Speaker 3: and he gets lit up, are you like god, dang, dang,
- 49:02Speaker 3: always you want.
- 49:03Speaker 6: To done that?
- 49:03Speaker 10: Yeah, in the moment, I kind of I'm like, dang,
- 49:05Speaker 10: I wish I would just finish my throat like if
- 49:08Speaker 10: I if I throw it high. But my mentality most
- 49:11Speaker 10: time is just next play, next through because I know
- 49:12Speaker 10: what to make the next time.
- 49:13Speaker 6: So yeah, that's a good point.
- 49:14Speaker 4: Bones like, so that my bad.
- 49:16Speaker 6: Like that's got to be hard though, right sometimes when
- 49:18Speaker 6: you're just like you that that was on me, especially
- 49:20Speaker 6: when they caught it, like it's an abjection. But just
- 49:21Speaker 6: like I mean to get your I mean to put
- 49:23Speaker 6: your ribs up there.
- 49:23Speaker 4: How hard is that to admit that you're wrong.
- 49:26Speaker 10: Honestly, it's not as bad as people think. Like it's
- 49:29Speaker 10: pretty easy.
- 49:31Speaker 6: That's why I asked.
- 49:32Speaker 10: It's honestly not that bad. And I think it helps
- 49:35Speaker 10: if the receivers are the same, Like if they're a
- 49:37Speaker 10: little deep on the route and I got throw it
- 49:39Speaker 10: and it looks a little bit outside and it looks
- 49:41Speaker 10: like I just do a bad ball, Like they'll come
- 49:42Speaker 10: over me on the sideline and like, that's my bad.
- 49:44Speaker 10: I need to get out of it, or I want
- 49:45Speaker 10: a yard too far. And I think that helps me
- 49:47Speaker 10: be sure with them to like if I throw it
- 49:49Speaker 10: over their head and I'll be like, that's my bad.
- 49:51Speaker 10: Or if I mistimed the route and I throw it earlier,
- 49:53Speaker 10: if I throw it late, I'll say it's my bad.
- 49:55Speaker 10: So I think that just the mutual like being able
- 49:57Speaker 10: to accept the fact and take accountability for we mess
- 50:00Speaker 10: up is a big Part's a bang eight bang eight
- 50:03Speaker 10: is a it's like a yard hook.
- 50:05Speaker 6: If I'm guessing, no, it's exactly That's why I don't
- 50:07Speaker 6: guess that.
- 50:09Speaker 10: So we it's our fifth outside step. It's like a
- 50:12Speaker 10: like a slant or like a really short post. So
- 50:15Speaker 10: like if you're a receiver and you have your left
- 50:16Speaker 10: fot forward, your fist, your fist step with your right
- 50:19Speaker 10: leg is when you're gonna break and you're taking like
- 50:20Speaker 10: a slant angle.
- 50:21Speaker 6: Why they call a bang eight? I didn't hear the
- 50:22Speaker 6: word of eight anywhere? Eight steps the bank five? No,
- 50:27Speaker 6: he doesn't know we can make that?
- 50:28Speaker 3: Really?
- 50:28Speaker 6: Is he called the bank five? Slants?
- 50:29Speaker 10: Some people call it different things. It's bang a there's
- 50:31Speaker 10: a glance, we call it bowl.
- 50:32Speaker 6: What's the difference in a slant in a bang eight?
- 50:35Speaker 10: The depth? So they give one step slants, you have
- 50:38Speaker 10: three step slants. Some people will use yardages for slants,
- 50:41Speaker 10: but our our glance or bang eight is like how
- 50:44Speaker 10: far you're getting down the field.
- 50:45Speaker 6: What's the difference in a hook and a curl?
- 50:47Speaker 10: Hook and a curl so they're pretty much the same thing.
- 50:50Speaker 10: We have a play called hook which the route is
- 50:53Speaker 10: very different than our play curl, so like for us,
- 50:56Speaker 10: it's like very different. It's basically like a spot route.
- 50:59Speaker 10: So he's running to the hash and setting up right there,
- 51:01Speaker 10: and our curw obviously twelve yards coming back down to
- 51:03Speaker 10: ten towards me.
- 51:04Speaker 6: So curl and hook both coming in back in the
- 51:09Speaker 6: same direction.
- 51:10Speaker 10: Yeah, So I think the only thing is with those
- 51:12Speaker 10: is they're working to the same area. So that's why
- 51:14Speaker 10: they're referencing, like a year about a hook curl player,
- 51:17Speaker 10: like those are really just reference to that area. So
- 51:20Speaker 10: like a hooks, hooks usually a round you say, seven
- 51:24Speaker 10: to ten yards, and a crow is usually round anywhere
- 51:27Speaker 10: between ten to fourteen depending on the offense.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Or if you're looking at a single high safety, is
- 51:31Speaker 3: that pretty much cover zero, cover one most of the time.
- 51:36Speaker 10: A lot of times unless we're in like a snug
- 51:39Speaker 10: or squeeze down alignment, then a lot of times the
- 51:41Speaker 10: defence is like the check cover three. But a lot
- 51:44Speaker 10: of times single high guys, they're getting pretty good at
- 51:47Speaker 10: disguising it. But a lot of times just cover one
- 51:48Speaker 10: and we don't like hook or curl in that end.
- 51:50Speaker 3: Yeah, right, Why is it important to identify the middle linebacker?
- 51:55Speaker 10: So for us, we don't identify the MIC. We identify
- 51:57Speaker 10: based on play which backer is important to a lot
- 51:59Speaker 10: of times it's the will or is it a backside linebacker.
- 52:01Speaker 10: Sometimes it's front side linebacker and the quarterback runs all that.
- 52:05Speaker 10: So we have stuff called match point down. So like
- 52:08Speaker 10: that's our all offense isn't just the mic, but a
- 52:10Speaker 10: lot of times it can be the mic. And it's
- 52:12Speaker 10: pretty important to know where the combo blocks for the
- 52:14Speaker 10: O line are gonna go to.
- 52:15Speaker 3: Because if you can identify the will, which is the
- 52:18Speaker 3: weeks that linebacker, and you know that the line is
- 52:22Speaker 3: supposed to find that line bag, it's just to know
- 52:24Speaker 3: where the block.
- 52:25Speaker 6: So everybody's on the same page.
- 52:26Speaker 10: Yeah, and then so favorite tight end and the run
- 52:28Speaker 10: play and I say point the mic, then they're gonna
- 52:31Speaker 10: work to the plus, which is in that case would
- 52:33Speaker 10: be the sam or if we're running to the boundary,
- 52:35Speaker 10: you'd be the wheel. So it also tells like where
- 52:37Speaker 10: all the combos are going through. So the tight end
- 52:38Speaker 10: attacker are gonna work to the plus, the center and
- 52:40Speaker 10: the guard are gonna work to the point, and the
- 52:42Speaker 10: backs are tackle guard are gonna work to the minus.
- 52:44Speaker 6: Do you make your voice deeper? I would, oh, for sure,
- 52:47Speaker 6: Like I would make my voice deeper.
- 52:48Speaker 3: It doesn't matter how deep it is. I would still
- 52:50Speaker 3: take it down a notch just so they would think, you.
- 52:52Speaker 10: Know, honestly, the Georgia game last year, I had to
- 52:55Speaker 10: I actually had to do that, Like they could there,
- 52:57Speaker 10: I had to make my voice really deep, like in
- 52:59Speaker 10: the huddle because they were screaming the whole time. They
- 53:01Speaker 10: had music playing, so I actually had to make my
- 53:03Speaker 10: voice deeper.
- 53:04Speaker 3: When you're playing at a stadium that is extremely loud,
- 53:08Speaker 3: Is it hard to communicate when you're on the line.
- 53:10Speaker 6: Do you have to go to I mean, can you
- 53:12Speaker 6: go to full hand signals if you have to?
- 53:14Speaker 10: Yeah, we can. We also have a silent cadence that
- 53:16Speaker 10: we didn't even have to work last year. But it's
- 53:18Speaker 10: honestly not that hard as long as you're clear with
- 53:22Speaker 10: what you're saying a lot of time, the line, like
- 53:24Speaker 10: we have the chemistry. I have chemistry with no line,
- 53:26Speaker 10: Like they know kind of what I'm saying, and we
- 53:27Speaker 10: all understand the offensivell enough, Like if I see somebody,
- 53:30Speaker 10: they're gonna see it too, Like I'll be like easy, easy,
- 53:32Speaker 10: they'll understand that. So they'll all kind of get their
- 53:34Speaker 10: eyes up and they can see what I see, which
- 53:35Speaker 10: helps a lot in those situations.
- 53:37Speaker 6: And don't worry about it.
- 53:38Speaker 4: No one's listening, But what say that because he's gonna
- 53:42Speaker 4: be because he's gonna be honest.
- 53:43Speaker 9: Right now?
- 53:44Speaker 4: Do you study more the playbook or your classes?
- 53:48Speaker 10: I study more with the playbook classes?
- 53:50Speaker 6: Which one?
- 53:50Speaker 10: Which one?
- 53:50Speaker 6: Do you study more?
- 53:52Speaker 10: Playbook? Honestly? Yeah?
- 53:54Speaker 6: What's your major?
- 53:55Speaker 10: Medical Health and Society?
- 53:56Speaker 6: Of course it is.
- 53:57Speaker 2: I think you need to focus more on the class.
- 54:00Speaker 6: For your future. The future people that you're doing medical
- 54:03Speaker 6: help for, they're not gonna want to hear this. Yeah,
- 54:06Speaker 6: what's the goal with that?
- 54:07Speaker 3: Let's say you're you finish here, you do your football career,
- 54:10Speaker 3: wherever it takes you after that, Like, do.
- 54:13Speaker 6: You want to go into the medical field? Is that?
- 54:15Speaker 1: Like?
- 54:15Speaker 6: What's the deal?
- 54:17Speaker 10: Not really on Medical Health and Society is like kind
- 54:20Speaker 10: of like everything major, Like it's a you can kind
- 54:23Speaker 10: of get into anything you want the business world or.
- 54:25Speaker 3: That's the difference Vanderbilt. That's the most complicated major ever.
- 54:28Speaker 3: And for us it was like general studies in business.
- 54:31Speaker 2: Yeah, well what does that mean anything?
- 54:33Speaker 10: This is a hard school, huh if you if you
- 54:35Speaker 10: make it hard, if you talk to professors and turning
- 54:37Speaker 10: your work. It's honestly not as hard as he will
- 54:40Speaker 10: make it out to be.
- 54:40Speaker 6: It's pretty cool. Good to Vanderbilt, very cool, I mean
- 54:44Speaker 6: as far as colleges go.
- 54:45Speaker 3: Aside from the program, moving in the right direction with
- 54:49Speaker 3: coach Lea like just going to Vanderbilt. There's some real
- 54:52Speaker 3: prestige too. I mean this is basically an Ivy League school,
- 54:57Speaker 3: just with an accent. You know, how do family feel
- 55:00Speaker 3: about you being a banderbilt?
- 55:01Speaker 10: They definitely like it. They're a little over three hours away,
- 55:04Speaker 10: so definitely not that bad of a drive for them.
- 55:07Speaker 10: They'll be up here this weekend for the game. My
- 55:09Speaker 10: sister brother in law nephew so excited to see them again.
- 55:13Speaker 3: You fix your dad's arm with your major, they have
- 55:16Speaker 3: to make fun of him anymore. I don't know if
- 55:17Speaker 3: I think he's making fun of us.
- 55:19Speaker 6: Think about it. He was like, you sow better than
- 55:21Speaker 6: my dad who has a broken Are like, well, that's cool.
- 55:23Speaker 6: What's what's he about? Well, he broke his arm? Is
- 55:27Speaker 6: that good? Here? Are you really that? Where does? Yeah?
- 55:30Speaker 6: You're healthy? Ready to go?
- 55:32Speaker 10: I'm very healthy, very ready to go.
- 55:33Speaker 6: Good luck this season.
- 55:34Speaker 3: I'm super pomped to you know, see you guys take
- 55:37Speaker 3: it at the next level.
- 55:38Speaker 6: And you like Nashville.
- 55:40Speaker 10: I love Nashville, great city.
- 55:41Speaker 4: Do you like country music?
- 55:42Speaker 10: I do like country music.
- 55:43Speaker 6: Where are you from?
- 55:44Speaker 10: From?
- 55:44Speaker 1: Georgia?
- 55:45Speaker 3: Canton, Georgia, what's in camp If I drove to Canton, Georgia,
- 55:47Speaker 3: what's there? If you drove to Canton, Yeah, what's what's
- 55:50Speaker 3: What's the first thing I see when you get to Canton?
- 55:52Speaker 6: We have to stoplight? M you have a stop We didn't
- 55:57Speaker 6: have a stoplight my own.
- 55:58Speaker 10: Yeah, it's it's not that's small of a city, but
- 56:02Speaker 10: definitely not that much doing. Can you get down to
- 56:04Speaker 10: the Woodstock area, there's a lot more to do, and
- 56:06Speaker 10: like the cars Were area. If you're coming from Tennessee,
- 56:09Speaker 10: he goes Tennessee or not Tennessee. You go Cartersville to
- 56:12Speaker 10: Canton to Woodstock. So like Carsville and Woodstock, I have
- 56:14Speaker 10: a lot of us to do in Cantons, just like
- 56:16Speaker 10: the city in the middle.
- 56:18Speaker 3: Is there like a Georgia Hall of Fame there? They
- 56:19Speaker 3: trying to like replicate the Canton football Hall of Fame.
- 56:22Speaker 3: Do they do anything in hall of Fame in Canton, Georgia?
- 56:25Speaker 6: No? Yeah, I'd be like Canton, Georgia, but they have
- 56:29Speaker 6: a hall of Fame. You would think. Hope you stay healthy,
- 56:31Speaker 6: Thank you super How tall are you?
- 56:34Speaker 10: Six three?
- 56:35Speaker 6: That's nice? How taught your dad five eleven? Really?
- 56:38Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 56:38Speaker 6: Where'd you get to hight.
- 56:40Speaker 10: My mom's sign. My mom five six, but her dad
- 56:43Speaker 10: was six or five and her brother is six four.
- 56:45Speaker 6: Did you always play football or did you excel in
- 56:47Speaker 6: other sports?
- 56:47Speaker 10: Yeah? I was actually pretty much all baseball growing up,
- 56:51Speaker 10: all baseball and basketball growing up. I actually hated football
- 56:55Speaker 10: and I quit in third and fourth grade and my
- 56:57Speaker 10: dad made me come back out for fifth grade, and
- 57:00Speaker 10: that he did. But yeah, I played baseball up until
- 57:01Speaker 10: I was twelve. A couple of kids I played with
- 57:03Speaker 10: got drafted last year. Uh, Dylan LESCo who was committed
- 57:06Speaker 10: to Vanderbilt got drafted. Drew Jones, who was committed Vanderbilt,
- 57:10Speaker 10: got drafted. I played with a couple of those guys.
- 57:12Speaker 10: And then basketball we played Yboa, which is like AAU,
- 57:15Speaker 10: but before they did like grades, they had the age groups,
- 57:18Speaker 10: so if you had a kid who was reclassed when
- 57:20Speaker 10: he was younger, we weren't able to play a years.
- 57:21Speaker 10: We played Yboa and we actually won the national championship
- 57:24Speaker 10: for that.
- 57:24Speaker 6: Wow, you should brag a little bit.
- 57:26Speaker 3: Yeah, man, please, little just sa little three played with
- 57:29Speaker 3: the All Stars.
- 57:30Speaker 6: What didn't you like about football? Very good? Apparently, get
- 57:33Speaker 6: no challenge for him. Yeah, it's a six three nine
- 57:36Speaker 6: year old just dominating everybody.
- 57:38Speaker 10: No, I actually don't know what I did, Like I mean,
- 57:39Speaker 10: I was so young. It was just like another thing
- 57:41Speaker 10: in the throwing in with travel baseball and basketball was
- 57:44Speaker 10: just a lot during the summer and then or not
- 57:47Speaker 10: during the summer during the fall. But to change, I
- 57:49Speaker 10: think the biggest thing was having to change my throw
- 57:51Speaker 10: motion between football and baseball. Because I was a pitcher.
- 57:53Speaker 10: Was really tough every single year to get god back
- 57:56Speaker 10: going in each sport. So that was rough.
- 57:58Speaker 6: Last question.
- 58:00Speaker 3: I could do this for thirty yet me through I know,
- 58:02Speaker 3: So if you were how far can you just throw
- 58:05Speaker 3: a football?
- 58:06Speaker 6: I'm not asking you to do it, I don't want
- 58:07Speaker 6: you to do it.
- 58:08Speaker 10: Yeah, how far could you?
- 58:09Speaker 6: What's the far? How far can you throw it?
- 58:11Speaker 10: The farthest I've thrown it was senior ye of high school.
- 58:14Speaker 10: I dow it seventy three Yet.
- 58:15Speaker 6: Practice you can throw it seventy three yards in the air.
- 58:17Speaker 10: I think I can throw it further now.
- 58:18Speaker 6: But wow, wow, what's still is?
- 58:21Speaker 1: That?
- 58:21Speaker 10: Was that?
- 58:21Speaker 6: A hell? Mary?
- 58:22Speaker 10: H No. We were at practice and we had a
- 58:25Speaker 10: really fast receiver and my coach told me, you to
- 58:27Speaker 10: let them down the field to see if I could
- 58:28Speaker 10: out throw them. And that's how far I threw it.
- 58:31Speaker 6: That's pretty cool. I don't. I barely run seventy three
- 58:33Speaker 6: yards without much Listen, how far do you throw bums?
- 58:36Speaker 9: Thirty? No?
- 58:37Speaker 6: I mean I was showing off my eighteen.
- 58:39Speaker 10: Yard Still I think I'll give forty forty.
- 58:42Speaker 3: Oh if I do, it's gonna hurt the next day.
- 58:44Speaker 3: For sure, I'm gonna throw my arm out. Good to
- 58:46Speaker 3: talk to you, Thanks man, thank you.
- 58:51Speaker 2: Our next up linebacker CJ.
- 58:52Speaker 6: Taylor.
- 58:53Speaker 2: CJ was named second team preseason All SEC.
- 58:56Speaker 6: Did you know that?
- 58:57Speaker 1: No?
- 58:57Speaker 2: I didn't know that. Neither did I.
- 58:59Speaker 4: I didn't know that, and now I'll watched some clips later.
- 59:01Speaker 4: Kevin and I were watching him. The dude can hurdle.
- 59:04Speaker 4: He jumped over a lineman like no problem for a sack.
- 59:07Speaker 5: Really yeah, last year against Missouri's awesome.
- 59:09Speaker 2: And then it was a scoop and score. It was
- 59:10Speaker 2: pretty amazing.
- 59:11Speaker 3: Dang, here he is and he had on some shoes
- 59:14Speaker 3: that were like slides, but I had like bubbles all over.
- 59:16Speaker 3: We talked about him, but it it was pretty cool.
- 59:18Speaker 3: Here is c J Taylor follow him underscore. C J
- 59:21Speaker 3: Taylor won. We were walking through the facility a minute ago,
- 59:24Speaker 3: and there was like tons of free snacks. That's gonna
- 59:26Speaker 3: be the best part about being a college athlete, right,
- 59:28Speaker 3: free snacks all time.
- 59:30Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 59:30Speaker 12: I mean sometimes it gets to the point where you're
- 59:33Speaker 12: just eating just to eat.
- 59:34Speaker 3: I want I'd already eaten, I still wanted to grab
- 59:36Speaker 3: a I didn't. I still wanted to grab a couple
- 59:38Speaker 3: just to have like a bar or something. Do they
- 59:40Speaker 3: they have a good program here to make sure like
- 59:41Speaker 3: you're eating the right stuff?
- 59:42Speaker 13: Yeah, for sure.
- 59:43Speaker 12: If you if you're not gaining the weight they want
- 59:44Speaker 12: you to get, it's it's really like you're just not
- 59:47Speaker 12: trying to eat. Like if you do what what Julia says,
- 59:50Speaker 12: and which is our nutritionness, if you do what she says,
- 59:52Speaker 12: and you're gonna gain the weight that you need to
- 59:54Speaker 12: gain to be successful.
- 59:56Speaker 6: How much weight have you put on since you moved
- 59:57Speaker 6: and sorted come to school? Man, A bet.
- 1:00:00Speaker 12: When I first got here, I was like one, but
- 1:00:02Speaker 12: it was like bad weight. So I was like one
- 1:00:05Speaker 12: or eighteen percent body fat, so and that's very bad.
- 1:00:07Speaker 12: I don't know if you know about any of that stuff,
- 1:00:09Speaker 12: but it's bad. But now I'm like at two o
- 1:00:12Speaker 12: seven nine and a half nine point five body fat.
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: So I said, me too, exact same. Wow, that's amazing
- 1:00:18Speaker 6: why he laughed so hard at that?
- 1:00:20Speaker 2: Yeah, what were you eating though?
- 1:00:23Speaker 9: Is it?
- 1:00:24Speaker 10: Like?
- 1:00:24Speaker 12: So one of my coaches, with my position coach, he
- 1:00:28Speaker 12: moved me in. He wasn't my position coach at the time,
- 1:00:30Speaker 12: but he is now, and he moved me in to
- 1:00:33Speaker 12: my door my freshman year and like my mom like, go,
- 1:00:35Speaker 12: I'm my first generation like college athlete or college student
- 1:00:38Speaker 12: in general. So my mom didn't know what to get me.
- 1:00:41Speaker 12: She didn't know, like so basically she overpacked and she
- 1:00:43Speaker 12: got me a bunch of snacks and food. I had
- 1:00:45Speaker 12: like maybe like four or five tots of like beef jerky,
- 1:00:50Speaker 12: five six totes of like Raymond noodles.
- 1:00:52Speaker 13: So it was like bad.
- 1:00:53Speaker 12: And like my position coach now, he was like whenever
- 1:00:56Speaker 12: I was moving in, he was like, dude, you can't
- 1:00:58Speaker 12: eat that. And then like Julia was like interrogating me,
- 1:01:00Speaker 12: like what how much have you been eating ray noodles?
- 1:01:03Speaker 12: So it was it was a big ordeal because like
- 1:01:06Speaker 12: my mom was a rookie when it came to this,
- 1:01:07Speaker 12: so she was just trying to make sure her son
- 1:01:08Speaker 12: was fed all the time.
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: So what's that normal day of eating for you? Like,
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: I mean trying to put in like, what is it
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: three four meals big Mills.
- 1:01:15Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:01:15Speaker 12: So I eat breakfast in the morning usually like the omelet,
- 1:01:19Speaker 12: some fruit, and then after practice I usually get some
- 1:01:24Speaker 12: cereal and.
- 1:01:24Speaker 13: Then I go to Chipotle.
- 1:01:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:01:28Speaker 13: Yeah, I usually go to Chipotle every day.
- 1:01:29Speaker 3: You get a bowl though not usually every day usually,
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: but what it really is is every day.
- 1:01:35Speaker 12: Yeah, so I get I get a basically brown rice
- 1:01:38Speaker 12: chicken bow, and then throughout the day I'm eating snacks
- 1:01:42Speaker 12: and then obviously I'm a load up for dinner whatever
- 1:01:46Speaker 12: that may be. I'm a I'm a lasagna guy, so
- 1:01:48Speaker 12: I like lasagna.
- 1:01:49Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: If I my stomach gets real bloated, you get bloated ever.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: No, old dudes, Yeah, look forward.
- 1:02:00Speaker 6: You ever have a you ever hit someone so hard
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: your head hurts and you got to stay in?
- 1:02:04Speaker 12: Yeah, Like the Florida game last year when I hit
- 1:02:07Speaker 12: Piersoll on the sideline, Like when I hit them, I like,
- 1:02:10Speaker 12: I like their helmets were blue, So I hit them
- 1:02:13Speaker 12: and I just seen like a blue blur and then
- 1:02:14Speaker 12: I got up and like the ref had like pulled me,
- 1:02:17Speaker 12: like hey, quit talking.
- 1:02:17Speaker 13: Crab. I wasn't even talking Crab. I was just trying
- 1:02:19Speaker 13: to overcome the brutal.
- 1:02:21Speaker 12: Hit and that I did to him. But that's one
- 1:02:24Speaker 12: of the hits that I hit somebody. I'm like, dude,
- 1:02:26Speaker 12: and then obviously I to stay in.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: How do you adjust to that, though, because anytime you
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: hit or get hit, if it's you know, it's it's
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: a big collision and you're going to the next play,
- 1:02:35Speaker 3: do you just expect to catch up with yourself before
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: the play starts.
- 1:02:39Speaker 12: I guess it's kind of different for defensive players. Obviously
- 1:02:41Speaker 12: offensive players is they're the ones getting targeted. Like I'm
- 1:02:45Speaker 12: trying to hit the defensive player every time. But as
- 1:02:47Speaker 12: a defensive player, you can kind of control like the
- 1:02:50Speaker 12: way you hit somebody. So if I hit somebody straight up,
- 1:02:52Speaker 12: I can go lower next time, so I can kind
- 1:02:55Speaker 12: of try to absorb the blows differently.
- 1:02:57Speaker 3: Every time you ever just light somebody up and knock
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: their You ever take the shoes off you know they
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: should decleator.
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: You ever literally decleted somebody.
- 1:03:03Speaker 12: Like, yeah, I've hit someone that made them flip or whatever,
- 1:03:05Speaker 12: but I've never like taken.
- 1:03:07Speaker 6: Their shoes off their streaks.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: You gotta do that this year.
- 1:03:10Speaker 3: Yeah, that's when you do that, teach me that technique.
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: When did you like did you like to hit from
- 1:03:17Speaker 4: the beginning, from first time you played?
- 1:03:19Speaker 12: Yeah, so like when I was little, like, I've always
- 1:03:21Speaker 12: been like an aggressive kid, as my mom would say,
- 1:03:24Speaker 12: I was an instigator and I always loved like being aggressive.
- 1:03:28Speaker 12: So when I first started playing football, it was kind
- 1:03:30Speaker 12: of like second nature to me, and I really liked it. So,
- 1:03:33Speaker 12: I mean, that may be a question for her, but
- 1:03:35Speaker 12: because I don't remember the first time I hit somebody,
- 1:03:37Speaker 12: but from what I know, I was, I was very
- 1:03:40Speaker 12: aggressive and I liked it.
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: You hit them hard.
- 1:03:42Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: Were you recruited as a linebacker?
- 1:03:44Speaker 12: No, I mean I was recruited as a safety to
- 1:03:46Speaker 12: a bunch of schools and then like the Army, Navy,
- 1:03:49Speaker 12: Air Force, like those schools, I got recruited as a
- 1:03:51Speaker 12: running back. For the most part, it was safety. For
- 1:03:53Speaker 12: like the big powerfup schools that I got recruited by,
- 1:03:55Speaker 12: it was it was for safety.
- 1:03:57Speaker 13: Mississippi State was I was outside linebacker. That's what they
- 1:03:59Speaker 13: want me for.
- 1:04:00Speaker 6: How does it project to the next level for you?
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: Is it wherever?
- 1:04:04Speaker 13: Yeah?
- 1:04:04Speaker 12: I mean it's so like obviously it's the NFL is
- 1:04:07Speaker 12: more of a passing game, like because you can tell
- 1:04:09Speaker 12: how they're treating running backs now that that position has
- 1:04:13Speaker 12: evolved into a position that doesn't get valued. So it's
- 1:04:17Speaker 12: really like a more of a passing down or a
- 1:04:19Speaker 12: passing game in that level. So if you play safety
- 1:04:23Speaker 12: and they think you like speed, you're gonna play will.
- 1:04:26Speaker 12: Obviously you have to show that you can use your hands.
- 1:04:28Speaker 12: So really, I don't know, I'm gonna have to figure
- 1:04:31Speaker 12: out like either I'm gonna have to put on a
- 1:04:32Speaker 12: bunch of weight, good weight and play will or get
- 1:04:36Speaker 12: my technique better and play safety. So it hot safety.
- 1:04:39Speaker 12: So it just depends Zigna. It's the key, Yeah, Dona
- 1:04:43Speaker 12: is the key to put on weight. One final question
- 1:04:45Speaker 12: for you going into the season. I mean there's a
- 1:04:48Speaker 12: lot of momentum. You know, according to the coaches, you're
- 1:04:51Speaker 12: one of the leaders to keep this momentum going on
- 1:04:54Speaker 12: that side of the ball. Like we're about to go
- 1:04:55Speaker 12: into game number one, Like how are you feeling? Do
- 1:04:58Speaker 12: you feel like you know you gotta be the guy
- 1:05:00Speaker 12: out there that's answer everybody's questions if there is one.
- 1:05:03Speaker 12: Oh no, I mean I think it's a collective, Like
- 1:05:06Speaker 12: we're returning a lot of guys like Mahoney, Ethan Barr,
- 1:05:10Speaker 12: Kane Patterson, Di Ricky, Nate Clifton. I can go down
- 1:05:13Speaker 12: the line, definitely, but I think we all have a
- 1:05:16Speaker 12: bond and a connection to where like I can look
- 1:05:19Speaker 12: at Di Ricky and he knows, like if something happened
- 1:05:21Speaker 12: and I look at him, like he knows either he
- 1:05:23Speaker 12: did something wrong and he can fix it, or if
- 1:05:25Speaker 12: vice versa, if I did something wrong and he looks
- 1:05:26Speaker 12: at me, I'm like, hang on. So I think that
- 1:05:29Speaker 12: I don't think anyone has to answer to anyone's questions.
- 1:05:31Speaker 12: Like I think we all know there's a scheme. We're
- 1:05:36Speaker 12: comfortable with it. So I think that's one thing that's
- 1:05:38Speaker 12: gonna carry us throughout the season and especially early because
- 1:05:41Speaker 12: all the.
- 1:05:42Speaker 13: Guys that were here last year minus a few, like,
- 1:05:44Speaker 13: we're back.
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: So what was your best game in high school stat wise? Oakland?
- 1:05:48Speaker 12: Probably or yeah versus Oakland, I had like two hundred
- 1:05:51Speaker 12: and fifty yards two touchdowns. Nah, let me take that back.
- 1:05:55Speaker 12: Blackman was my best game I had, like anyone better
- 1:05:56Speaker 12: than Yeah? Yeah, my best game is against black Men.
- 1:06:00Speaker 12: We've never beat them, So we're six A. We have
- 1:06:03Speaker 12: never beat them for like the past fifteen years, so
- 1:06:05Speaker 12: we've never beat them. And then my senior year, we
- 1:06:07Speaker 12: went down there in mervos Borough and I rest for
- 1:06:10Speaker 12: like three hundred and twenty one yards five touchdowns and
- 1:06:12Speaker 12: we won thirty five to twenty eight.
- 1:06:15Speaker 6: That game is still close though.
- 1:06:17Speaker 12: I have a screenshot on my phone it was there
- 1:06:19Speaker 12: was someone in screenshot at the end of the first quarter.
- 1:06:21Speaker 13: It was twenty one zero.
- 1:06:22Speaker 12: So we didn't do our job to pull off or
- 1:06:25Speaker 12: I guess you would say put the dagger in them,
- 1:06:27Speaker 12: but they came.
- 1:06:28Speaker 6: From three hundred yards? Was it just easy? Red Sea?
- 1:06:32Speaker 12: Now, if I was in shape, because whenever I was
- 1:06:34Speaker 12: in high school, like dude, I I was a basketball player.
- 1:06:37Speaker 13: I played football.
- 1:06:37Speaker 12: I never have got I never had it all season,
- 1:06:39Speaker 12: so I was just going from season to season. And
- 1:06:41Speaker 12: you know that basketball shape is different in football shape.
- 1:06:44Speaker 12: There's a quote that their their coach said that if
- 1:06:46Speaker 12: I was in shape, I would arrest for five hundred yards,
- 1:06:48Speaker 12: but after every play I was like this, so and.
- 1:06:52Speaker 3: I wish I could be like that someday.
- 1:06:55Speaker 6: Have a great season, good luck, stay healthy, Really looking
- 1:06:58Speaker 6: forward to this year. Thank you, Thanks for the time.
- 1:06:59Speaker 3: Sir, and now from Australia, the punter Matt Matt Hayball
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: or Matt harbarar like with an accent. I just called
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: him Matt. Yeah, me too. Man from Australia. Transferred to
- 1:07:13Speaker 3: Vanderbilt from Florida Atlantic last year. He's on the Reggae
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: Award watchlist. It's not punter. He played Australian football and
- 1:07:19Speaker 3: we talked about that. You can follow Matt at Matt
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: Hayball right there you go, here's Matt by your accent.
- 1:07:25Speaker 3: You're not from Nashville, that's correct, Georgia a little bit
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: further away.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: Got it?
- 1:07:30Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, not Florida. Transferred from a school in Florida,
- 1:07:34Speaker 11: but from Adelaide, Australia.
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: And so you're the punter. And I think of when
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: I was in Australia. There's a lot of rugby over there.
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: And that's what you did? Is that was that how
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: you were brought into football.
- 1:07:45Speaker 11: I played Australian football ASIE rules.
- 1:07:48Speaker 6: What's the difference in that rugby?
- 1:07:50Speaker 11: You said you've been to Australia, did you did you catch?
- 1:07:53Speaker 11: You caught some rugby games? Not AFL though.
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: That's so yeah, I don't know that, And then I
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: went to something where they were playing cricket.
- 1:08:00Speaker 11: Cricket thing. That's another thing that I'm not.
- 1:08:03Speaker 6: Really sure what that one is either, but I went
- 1:08:04Speaker 6: to one of those too.
- 1:08:05Speaker 11: That's closer to baseball. But yes, yeah, Ozzie football sort
- 1:08:09Speaker 11: of soccer, rugby kind of howard is how I describe it,
- 1:08:13Speaker 11: even though the Aussies probably wouldn't agree with that. But
- 1:08:16Speaker 11: it's just we we sort of punked the ball around
- 1:08:18Speaker 11: to each other. That's why there's so many Australians over
- 1:08:21Speaker 11: here now.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: So you were like throwing passes but punning it. Basically,
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: do you get a point if you kick it someone
- 1:08:27Speaker 3: catches it? No, So we're trying to work from one
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: end to the other. Kick it through some posts and
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: you get six points for a goal like crooquet give
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: the cooqutu puts on the groundhere you knock it hub
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: now not overly?
- 1:08:37Speaker 10: All right?
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: Right?
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: Confused?
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: We had a set in the back of the apartment
- 1:08:41Speaker 3: complex we lived in when I was like seven, and
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: I remember hitting. So were you really good at Australian
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: rules football as a kicker?
- 1:08:48Speaker 11: So everybody kicks in the sports, so.
- 1:08:52Speaker 6: But everybody could just come over here.
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Then if everybody was good and just be collegiate punters,
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: they didn't know you did.
- 1:08:58Speaker 11: It, so it's a little different. You have to we
- 1:09:01Speaker 11: sort of kick those end over end style, so it
- 1:09:05Speaker 11: takes a bit of training to be able to hit
- 1:09:07Speaker 11: those spirals. The techniques a little different to just sort
- 1:09:10Speaker 11: of get to that level. But yeah, it is becoming
- 1:09:13Speaker 11: more and more popular.
- 1:09:14Speaker 6: How did you get involved in American football?
- 1:09:16Speaker 11: So I came through Pro Kick Australia's. That's the academy
- 1:09:21Speaker 11: most of the Aussies go through, just sort of do
- 1:09:24Speaker 11: some tryouts there. They train us on how to punt,
- 1:09:27Speaker 11: and the schools sort of contact them and we get
- 1:09:31Speaker 11: sort of partner it up that way.
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: Do you get hit harder playing ossy football or punting
- 1:09:35Speaker 3: American football and you have a big line in front.
- 1:09:37Speaker 11: Of you, Well, thankfully they're not really allowed to hit
- 1:09:40Speaker 11: me over here, so pretty safe. But over there no
- 1:09:44Speaker 11: pads or anything, So.
- 1:09:45Speaker 6: No pads and they can hit you, that's right here.
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: They can only hit you if they tip the ball.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:09:49Speaker 10: Yep.
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: Oh, so here's this is nothing.
- 1:09:51Speaker 11: No one's allowed to hit me.
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: But did you wear a helmet over there?
- 1:09:54Speaker 10: Nah?
- 1:09:54Speaker 6: So that's going to be different though, to put a
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: helmet on your head to.
- 1:09:56Speaker 11: Kick, Yeah, it's an adjustment for sure, A bit of
- 1:09:59Speaker 11: extra na nothing, no equipment at all in ASIE rules.
- 1:10:05Speaker 3: What's the what's the key to being a I don't
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: know how to pint? I have no idea to pint.
- 1:10:10Speaker 11: Are we gonna we're gonna try, as I can tell.
- 1:10:12Speaker 6: I just want to.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: I just want to, like a quick lesson. And what's
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: the key to being a quality punter?
- 1:10:21Speaker 11: Well, it just takes consistency is the hardest part. So
- 1:10:25Speaker 11: just a very repetitive technique that you're comfortable with. And
